If a parent has physically abused their child statistically will they do it again? more

Resolved Question: Why is the mother (female) the default parent?

The statistics show women abuse children more in most cases except for sexual abuse. The reasons for this is because women are the ones with custody of the children by default in many custody cases. Q 1. Why is a mother valued more than a father based on sex? Q2. Why is an abusive mother more likely to be overlooked and slide under the radar than an abusive father? Basically why is women's child abuse stats hidden in our society? more

Voting Question: Why not become a vegetarian?

ENVIRONMENTAL Many often say, you cant be a environmentalist without being a vegan/vegetarian. This is because the demand of poultry and meat is increasing which increases the amount of chickens and cows which increases the amount of factory farming which increases the amount of co2 in the atmosphere. In addition, cows that are used for meat and dairy release major quantities of methane into the atmosphere which statistics show causes 13 %, yes 13 % of global warming. People would say that being a vegetarian would only increase the amount of methane that is released into the atmosphere since less cows are being killed, but it is the other way around because there is less demand for meat/dairy from cows, thus a decreased amount of cows. RELIGOUS many religous views support the decisions of becoming vegetarians such as judaism, christianity, greek and roman thought, islam, buddhism, hinduism, however do not prohibit the consumption of meat ECONOMICAL Massive reductions in meat consumption in industrial nations will ease their health care burden while improving public health; declining livestock herds will take pressure off rangelands and grainlands, allowing the agricultural resource base to rejuvenate. As populations grow, lowering meat consumption worldwide will allow more efficient use of declining per capita land and water resources, while at the same time making grain more affordable to the world's chronically hungry. HEALTH Becoming a vegetarian/vegan will reduce the chance of getting heart disease and a heart attack greatly, and also reduces the chance of one getting diabeties, Not only that, but help reduce or prevent obesity. In addition, becoming a vegetarian will also reduce chances of getting the following cancers: cerebrovascular disease, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. And there are meat alternatives for humans with plenty of nutrients such as tofu, beans, nuts, veggie meat, and much more so dont answer with that bs. ETHICAL Overall, animals that are in the meat/dairy industry are treated terribly and i mean terribly! They are often abused by the people who work there, forced into small areas, never get to see outdoors, slaughtered in the most INhumane ever, seperated from their children who are slaughtered, and are practically treated like Jews that were victims of Hitler or African American slaves-- but even worse. Many people do not believe that cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs, or sheep can feel the same as us humans do, but that is just an utter ignorant lie. Also, people say that they are dumb animals so they dont really matter, but believe or not pigs are smarter than the average dog. Not enough for you, watch this documentary "Earthlings": www documentarywire com/earthlings TIPS BEFORE ANSWERING Dont answer with because they taste good because there are many meat alternatives for vegetarian dishes that taste exactly taste like meat but even better such as tofu or veggie burgers Dont answer with I am a peta terrorist because I do not even support peta Dont answer with God intended us to eat animals because they are made out of meat because then you would be supporting cannibalism Dont answer with its not healthy because becoming a vegetarian is much healthier than being a meat eater with a well balanced diet.unlike animals who eat other animals, we have a choice of different foods other than meat since humans are omnivores. In addition, the animals that eat other animals dont torture them for their whole lives like us humans do.im not preaching!!! how is informing facts anything like preaching? more

Resolved Question: How is it possible I was sexually abused as a kid... by another kid?

I was only nine and he was ten. He didn't use any violence he kept pushing me to put objects in me and to touch him. After all these years (I'm 20 now) I found the courage to go and see a psychiatrist about it. I just can't tell her what happened so she asks me questions about it now. Last week she asked if I was abused by another child. I was really shocked. I didn't dare to answer it, I was about to collapse. How is it possible I was abused by another child? I just don't get it. I'm afraid she won't believe me. I mean how can a ten year old rape a nine year old? That's not even all, tortured insects in front of me. I know his parents, they are normal. I'm really confused. I saw in statistics 40% is abused by older/larger children, but I mean... he was f*cking ten. Can anyone clear this out pls, give advice, explain? I really wanna talk to my psy about it.. but at this moment I don't think I'll ever dare... Pls only serious answers... more

Resolved Question: Should we teach this?

Since the rationale for emphasizing "groin strikes" or other sexual violence in teaching self defense to women is that an attacker is (statistically) likely to be a man, should we use the same reasoning in teaching self defense to children? In that case, federal child abuse statistics show that (statistically) the most likely attacker of a child is a woman. So should children be taught how to cause sexual injury to women? Or, is what is good for the gander not good for the goose? The difference, of course, (oh less than wise zzzzzzzz...) is that women's self-defense classes emphasize the attack of male sexual organs. Men's martial arts classes generally do not. Now, having said that, perhaps you can answer my question? Even a feminist ought to be able to complete that task.On the question of violence against children by adults, anyone (even a feminist!) can go online at the DOJ web-page and confirm that female perpetrators of child abuse outnumber male perpetrators. And they have done so for as long as such statistics were compiled. Even a feminist ought to be capable of this task.OK - here is one link to federal 2007 data that will also enable the reader to look up other years. My assumption that even feminists could look this sort of thing up was clearly wrong. http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm07/chapter5.htm#ageBut I do find it amusing that feminists are offended by this idea, yet not offended by the idea of teaching women to cause sexual harm to men. Hypocrisy has no limits, I suppose.Lynn: can you not read? I explicitly provide the reference data to violence against children above. And I never said sexual violence against children. Indeed, of all of the child abuse statistics complied, the sexual abuse numbers are a quite small share (and the only one that men commit in larger numbers). Women exceed men in all of child abuse categories (beatings, killings, denial of medical care,....., etc.). I assume that you can read? Also, I, or my many family members (my wife and children, my siblings and their spouses and children) have seen or participated in women's self defense training in many cities and states in the U.S. It is a direct observation that most/nearly-all pay special attention to doing harm to male sexual organs. So why the defensiveness. Feeling guilty? more

Resolved Question: Why are suicide rates highest among whites as compared to other races?

According to knowledgeable sociologists suicide is not caused by depression or emotions (since when do whites have emotions?) but amounting to what society expects of you and copping out. Also suicides and depression are only linked through the cases of women, as most clinical psychologists have reported. These individuals are more prone to child abuse (what they are actually known for), drug abuse, and the inevitable suicide. So does this correlate at all with why white men are leading in rape cases, psychiatric asylums, child molestations, and suicide rates by 4 times than any other races according to the statistics? This theory (social suicide theory) may actually explain why white men are more prone to be psychotic murderers as well, seeing as how they have absolutely no racial or ethnic barriers to overcome in a white society. Can any white nationalist refute these facts that have been agreed upon by clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and sociologists even though you may not even have a high school diploma? more

Resolved Question: Why isn't gay attack in US prisons taken seriously?

Is it PC which is topping this being tackled? What is going on Human Rights Watch reported this: Juveniles are regularly raped between 1 in 5 and 1 in 10. Usually from other gay prisoners but also from gay staff. Link to "www hrw org /en/news/2010/01/07/us-1-10-children-juvenile-facilities-report-sexual-abuse-staff" To tackle this will require liberal western governments to start making some anti-gay legislation and aim to protect human rights. But prisons have for a very long time been very lenient on this: Are prison governors permitting this as so as to allow some of their more troublesome prisoners a facility to relieve themselves on others? Statistics from UK prisons is simply not being recorded- presumably because of it offending gay groups? Certainly no upset from secular press over the matter. Also are statistics being exaggerated by some to try to cloud this issue? 1 in 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 18. 1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before the age of 18. I don't know what to deduce as these figures appear too alarmingly large, it does not explain how the situation could have remained unreported for so long. "www d2lblog com/2009/12/statistics-surrounding-child-sexual.html" (anyone who feels this is too mature for YA! please feel free to tell me and I will remove it)I am sorry to disagree with some of the sentiments here. I have to say I really do think people once they are in prison - jail- should be protected from abuse. Otherwise at the very least, once they get out they will be liable to take their hurt out on someone else. Also please even you can't care for the guilty people: Not everyone who is in prison is guilty. more

Resolved Question: Waiting for marriage to have sex?

I'm really confused and on the verge of making a very huge decision in my life and need all the advice possible. This isn't an attempt at trolling, so if you take it as one, get the hell out of here! While I was sitting here thinking about why I'm waiting until marriage to have sex, I realised that I'm not sure if marriage is really what I want after witnessing so much negativity both here and in real life by particularly women (who are thought to be more chaste --- yeah right!) in regards to my decision. I wanted a girl with the same values, but it doesn't look reasonable that any exist. They want to sleep around and take advantage of as many guys as they can is what it looks like, and then settle down and hope they won't be cheated on/abused/outright abandoned/etc (good luck with that one, ladies!) So I've pretty much said f*** you to marriage entirely. The only thing I really want out of it now after witnessing all of this, has seemingly become just to have sex. I have lost all hope and also my respect for women, and now I think of them as merely objects and that it's better to just take advantage of as many of them as I can. I had so many opportunities but something always stopped me. And what worries me is everything is telling me to do it, to take advantage of those opportunities, but some small voice inside of me, despite the overwhelming negativity that I have witnessed, is telling me to hold on for something better and I just don't know why. It's driving me up the wall. Statistics, logic, rationality, and my emotions are screaming at the top of their lungs to take advantage of as many women as possible and never settle down, and become just like the other males in society. But for some reason I don't want to become like the rest of them, though I also find absolutely no incentive for me to wait any more. All of the attractive women are long since not virgins and that's what I really wanted...to find a girl as attractive, successful and physically fit as I am with an excellent personality, and settle down. Now I just KNOW (not believe) that such don't exist nowadays and probably never have. All I ever wanted besides having a successful career, was a happy marriage, children and a faithful wife. But it doesn't seem like I'm allowed that now am I? Church girls, for the few that are attractive, are incredibly easy while non-religious girls or girls of other religions are just as easy, but lack any sense of conscience it seems. I don't want to settle down with some used up trash (and hopefully if she exists, she views me the same way in this case as insecure as this may seem) -- which is the only other alternative. I also don't want to end up living alone because of this (so in other words, it's a 'Bachelor's life' for me), so I am thinking, possibly irrationally do to all of this overwhelming info that's causing some severe self-doubt it me, that it's better to go with option one and just sleep around like everyone else but on the other hand not marry so I don't have to share my income with some vile b**** that will use me and leave (which is all too common in 2010). So I really need some help. I am between a rock and some really hard place, and it feels like the temperature here is only getting hotter. I need all the help I can get, especially SPIRITUAL help. I've furthermore seen a few males relate to me already, so it appears as if there are a lot of us that are thinking this way. No females though. Maybe more can relate or provide some kind of certainty? Because this tremendous doubt is eating me alive, just as it is getting to them.- Miss Awesome, bah you're defining more problems for me. Let's not go there. I don't want to play that counting/who's better/who was better/insecurity game. That's like telling me she's already cheated and ran off with the guy. Forget it. Apparently, I'm too judgmental for that. Mr. Fix it, you ever consider a society based on YOUR view is what caused the 80% sexual incompatibility? I agreed up until that point with what you wrote, until you presented that flaunty bit of 'logic'. That would also mean sex doesn't mean a thing to any of you, it's just something to do to kill time, or for fun -- whatever you define it as. Sorry, but no. Maybe it is in your world, but to me it still means something. more

Resolved Question: Amnesty for Law breakers?

She was 14 when her mother smuggled her into Los Angeles. She met her future husband, a legal resident, two years later. A Guatemalan immigrant now has legal United States residency after helping the authorities prosecute her husband for abuse. She asked that her identity be withheld for fear of retaliation. Bay Area Report He had all the cards, and played them cruelly, as she recalls. He would not let her go to school or work, dragged his feet on supporting her citizenship request, and called her fat and ugly after she became pregnant. She endured it all — until she caught him romancing a 13-year-old girl from their church choir. When she complained, he beat her bloody, tried to rape her, and fled, with the girl, to Arizona, she said in an affidavit that is now part of federal immigration records. Today, he is in prison, and she is caring for her children in San Francisco, with a driver’s license and a legal job baby-sitting. Her legal status came about through what is known as a U visa — a humanitarian “island of niceness,” as one advocate called it, in a sea of restrictive United States immigration laws. Victims of domestic violence are often deeply reluctant to press charges, fearing retaliation or simply hoping their abusers will change. The risk of deportation only escalates the aversion to go to the police. That is a main reason that Congress passed legislation in 2000, creating the U visa. It allows immigrants who have endured substantial mental or physical abuse and who cooperate with law enforcement officials to work legally and stay in the United States for up to four years while applying for permanent residence. After nearly a decade of delays, federal officials began allowing the visas en masse only early last year, after sustained efforts from immigrant rights groups, particularly several based in Oakland and San Francisco. The pace of approvals has since stepped up, as has the controversy, with both defense lawyers and groups opposed to immigration contending that the process invites scams. More on this here http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/08/us/08sfimmigrant.html Here is another story about prison abuse Sexual Abuse by Prison and Jail Staff Proves Persistent, Pandemic by Gary Hunter Sexual assault, rape, indecency, deviance. These terms represent reprehensible behavior in our society. They also represent recurring themes in our nation’s prisons – not only by prisoners, but also by guards and other staff members. PLN’s August 2006 cover story, Guards Rape of Prisoners Rampant, No Solution in Sight, profiled examples of sexual abuse by prison guards and other employees in 26 states. Since that time the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission has issued proposed standards to reduce sexual abuse behind bars, and the Bureau of Justice Statistics has released reports on sexual victimization in our nation’s prisons and jails. The latter reports found that over 60% of allegations of sexual abuse involved staff members rather than other prisoners. What has not changed in the past several years is the continued rape and sexual exploitation of prisoners by prison and jail employees who are supposed to ensure their safety. All 50 states have enacted laws criminalizing sex between prisoners and prison staff; thus, employees who engage in sexual misconduct can no longer claim consent as a defense. Due to the nature of prisons as “total institutions,” it is impossible for prisoners to voluntarily consent to sexual advances by staff members who exert complete control over their lives – and in some cases over their release from prison. https://www.prisonlegalnews.org/21225_displayArticle.aspx Now do you think its fair for one group who breaks the law to get a reward? Meanwhile another group who also breaks the law. Is being told that they are getting what they deserve in jail! Can anyone see a problem here? If so please tell me why one group should get a reward while another group is told that its their own fault.Drbne no one is advocating the release of a child molester. This child molester was already engaged in illegal activity when he was aiding and abetting an illegal activity. What I want to prove here is that supporters of illegal aliens are themselves criminals. Just like a serial killer is engaged in more then one illegal activity. If this lady from Guatemala wanted to she could have grabbed her kids and ran. She only reported him since he broke up with her. She cared nothing for the child that was being molested. You need to stop making stuff up to support illegal activity.Another thing is that we do not know if the child molester was an illegal alien himself. That was of course left out by the media. http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=50441 So I am willing to bet the child molester was an illegal alien himself. more

Resolved Question: another illegal alien charged with a crime?

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police arrested the man they say shook a baby so violently she died. Randy Moorehead was arrested Wednesday night around 8:00 PM. He is currently being held in the Mecklenburg County jail and has a court date scheduled tomorrow. He is charged with murder and child abuse inflicting serious injury. Police say he shook 22 month-old Jalenthia Caldwell while babysitting her last Friday. Her mother was working, and when she returned she noticed Jalenthia sleeping in a strange position. She called 911 and the toddler was taken to the hospital. The girl died there Sunday. There is a vigil for Jalenthia tonight. It begins at 5:30 PM in the 900 block of Parkwood Ave. Her funeral is Saturday. http://www.wbtv.com/global/story.asp?s=11612445 here's some statistics you might not be interested in especially if you are trying to play the blame game Child Abuse & Child Sexual Abuse ~ Substantiated Composition of substantiated child abuse in 2000: 879,000 children were victims of child maltreatment. Neglect ~ 63% Physical ~ 19% Sexual ~ 10% Psychological ~ 8% Victimization rates declined as age increased. Rate of victimization per 1,000 children of the same age group: Birth to 3 years old = 15.7 victims per 1,000. Ages 16 and 17 = 5.7 victims per 1,000. Except for victims of sexual abuse, rates were similar for male and female victimization: 11.2 and 12.8 per 1,000 children respectively. Rate of sexual abuse by gender: 1.7 victims per 1,000 female children 0.4 victims per 1,000 male children. Rate of child abuse by race: White = 51% African American = 25% Hispanic = 15% American Indian/Alaska Natives = 2% Asian/Pacific Islanders = 1% The comparative annual rate of child victims: decreased steadily from 15.3 victims per 1,000 children in 1993 to 11.8 victims per 1,000 children in 1999; then increased to 12.2 per 1,000 children in 2000. Whether this is a trend cannot be determined until additional data are collected. Source: US Dept of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children & Families, Child Welfare Information Gateway (formerly Nat'l Clearinghouse on Child Abuse & Neglect), 2000. http://www.prevent-abuse-now.com/stats.htm#Linksi couldn't find stats from this past year. however i don't believe the percent has gone up or changed in 10 years but thanx again for your links Docar. as usuall you always have proof of your bogus numbers and stats. I remember that you got all pissed off as usuall well lemme refresh your memory... child molestation is more prominant in white men. look up your county sheriff office for level 3 sex offenders and you will see for yourself that the majority are white. most cultures find white men to be pretty putrid for the sex pest reason itself. more

Resolved Question: Can someone post links to stats that women abuse children more and kill more than men?

I do remember reading it. like this one is studying the state of California I beleive: http://www.capcsac.org/statistics This states: "Females account for three-quarters of the neglect and medical neglect cases, and three-quarters of the sexual abuse cases were associated with male perpetrators. [1]" So men sexually abuse and women abuse in other form more. Can anyone post more links and not to MRA blogs I want good sources. now women this is not a bash at women I am trying to get rid of the feminist model that only men do this. Also I'm aware women are around children a lot more so it increases the chances but still we cannot get into the realms of making excuses for women can we? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Why do feminist 'programmes' spread misinformation and propaganda?

For example, Harriet Harman - the most powerful & influential feminist in the British Government - has pushed for a school education of five-year old children to reflect the misrepresentation that only girls are victims of violence and only boys are abusers. We now from current and past statistics that abuse hits men at a rate of one in six while it hits women at a rate of one in four (this doesn't account unreported abuses, and let's be realistic - women DO tend to report more than men, so the real figures might well be a lot closer than the statistics indicate). So why are male victims being blatantly ignored? It's all very well pretending feminism doesn't promote hate & misinformation - but here we see it clearly, undeniably IS. If it wasn't - it would, like it pretends to be so concerned about, take a gender neutral approach to violence and victims and aggressors. At the very least it should include the facts that men don't report so often and that one in four men will be the recipient of abuse too. Yet this is being ignored. Why? And why are feminists with power systematically allowed to get away with abusing their positions? more

Voting Question: How come every bisexual or gay women I've ever met was sexually abused as a child? Homosexuality isn't natural?

When most "gay" and "bisexual" women admit to being sexually abused as a child, it is clearly not natural. It is a result of abuse by another person...hence why they are confused. Not ALL homosexual people...but statistics have shown that MOST gay or bi women became that way after abuse...either sexual or physical abuse. How is that natural?? more

Resolved Question: Why do Catholic priests consistently sexually abuse young children in their care?

Morganie - clearly being a Christian doesn't make you imune from telling lies, huh. Please edit your post with verifable statistics and sources that confirm teachers are STATISTICALLY ...ie pro-rata - more likely to sexually abuse children in their care than Catholic priests. And is it acceptable that the Catholic Church has consistently tried to cover the abuses up over the years. Would Jesus agree with this? And Morganie - I think you mean 'libel' rather than 'slander' - look up the difference. Not sure why some people have called me a 'sadistic bigot on a witch-hunt' for simply stating the truth. I am neither of those three things. That description would surely better describe a certain Catholic Friar "Thomas de Torquemada" who was instrumental in setting up the Spanish Inquisition. more

Resolved Question: What are my chances of getting into college?

I am a senior currently applying for college. I plan to major in fine arts/studio arts and do premed at the same time. So I'm specifically looking for a liberal arts college where their art program as well as premed program is excellent. So this is a list of schools I'm applying to and I'm putting them from highest probability to lowest probability of getting into: CUNY Hunter and City College; SUNY Binghamton; American University; NYU (Steinhardt); U Chicago; Columbia and Cornell; Yale; and two art schools on the side: School of Visual Arts in NYC and Cooper Union; I'm know I'm applying to a good number of reaches but I would regret never trying. Male, Asian (Filipino), First-Generation American Ranked 17/277 (top 6%) GPA: 3.7 (weighted); I don't know what it is unweighted. I tried calculating it and I think it may be 3.2 or 3.3, but don't hold me to that. Jr. High: Spanish, Biology, Math A (these count as high school credits) Freshman: Math A/Math B H, English H, Earth Science H, Global History H, Spanish, Studio Art, Personal Keyboarding, Concert Band Sophomore: Math B H, English H, AP Biology, AP World History, Spanish H, JROTC Junior: Precalculus H, AP Statistics, AP English Language, AP Chemistry, AP US History, Psychology, Health, Concert Band Senior: AP Calculus B/C, AP English Literature, Speech, AP Physics, Economics, Participation in Government, Studio Art Mostly A's and B's...and one dreadful C, but considering the weight from all the honor and AP classes I could have more B's. My school doesn't give out very impressive honors, titles, or awards. They also don't hold competitions e.g. science fairs or writing competitions. Not until by the END of senior year do they give out the special awards. So I can't say what I put down on commonapp is impressive either. The most legitimate ones besides Honor Roll/Pricipal's list is AP Scholar, Highest Score on the American Mathematics Competition in the school, and Reflections-Visual Arts Winner. My highest AP scores were a 5 for Biology, 4 for World History, and 4 for US History. My SAT scores are sadly unimpressive. Maybe because I didn't prepare enough. SAT I's: 1900 (composite score) 620 CR, 640 M, 640 W SAT II's: Biology: 750, World History: 630 I'm going to take the ACT and hopefully I'll get an excellent score. Resolved Question: For Cocoa Butter: Pedophilia Statistics hahahaha you lose?

Rate of child abuse by race: White = 51% African American = 25% Hispanic = 15% That's 25% of all child abuse. Now, what is the percentage of the American population that is black? 12.8%!!! So that means the numbers for black pedophiles are actually over what would be proportional for their population. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html http://www.prevent-abuse-now.com/stats.htm#Offendersdookie: Cocoa Butter challenged me to do this, so don't call me racist. Resolved Question: I have read several of the questions relating to the recent revelations?

of abuse within the Catholic Church. I am reading two types of answer. One is the fact of other abuse cases and who is responsible ....ie statistical information regarding carers, teachers etc. Some are pointing out that it is only a small proportion of Catholic clergy who abused and the last kind of answer is the hate the Catholic Church. Let's focus for a moment on the reports that have come out over the last few months and not make trite comments about numbers. What do you feel about the legal system not pursuing the abusers and bringing to justice.? Would we be sanguine in the case of war criminals. I put the argument having come through the system as a child that for every abuse documented there are treble the number who were abused in some way or another. My point here is that no one so far that I can see has addressed the following problems 1. The abuse occurred and left many damaged and stole childhoods. 2. Other members of the church at the time knew and did nothing to protect the victims. 3. Rome was involved in the cover up at the time. 4. Financially the Church has not paid out much in real terms and the government in Ireland will foot the larger part of the bill. They too are culpable. 5. One person even mentioned false claims....perhaps so but to use this as an argument for those who are genuine not to receive justice is wrong. In every hideous situation there are opportunists. 6. Lack of prosecutions of the perpetrators. Now these are all pertinent to the Catholic Church and the victims. It is too easy to drift off and generalize with numbers and statistics. But to me one childhood lost and in a perverse way condoned at a high level of the church is wrong. I will be bawled out no doubt by loyal members of teh church but I care not becasue I see first hand on a daily basis the legacy left. more

Voting Question: Questions about life: What are the answers?

Ok, I want to know the answers to some questions about life. Do you know the answers? Here are the questions: 1) Is it true that you sneeze at an average speed of 100 miles per hour? 2) What is the average death rate? 3) What is the average birth rate? 4) Why must people abuse animals? 5) How many species do you think that humans have refused to discover are left? 6) In the course of a lifetime, what does it matter? 7) Why is America the fattest country, & why must we use so much fat in our foods than other countries? 8) Which creatures depicted from Animal Planet's: Lost Tapes do you think are true & fake? 9) Why do smaller children seem to have some thought in their head about "the monster under the bed/in the closet/etc."? 10) Why do some people have a thought in their head that they, their race, religion, beliefs, etc. are better than others? 11) Why must we take our possessions, life, family, friends, etc. for granted? 12) Does the camera really add pounds, or is that just some stupid saying to get actresses/actors skinny? 13) Water is the healthiest drink. What is the healthiest soda? 14) I am a Christian. Are you a Christian? Jewish? Buddist? Scientologist? Mormon? Any other religion? What is the dominant religion? Since I'm asking that, how would you get a cute girl to ask you out? (I swear I'm not a lesbian, though I have nothing against them. I am very open.) 19) Last year, my German Shepherd mix dog, Lily Delilah passed on. That influened me to write poetry, which has really helped take my mind off of it. If a person were to abuse their dog, is it likely they would abuse their future child/children? I for sure do not abuse my dog, but am just curious if they are related. Resolved Question: Why do feminists say they want equality - but intentionally paint only half a picture?

For example, they talk about men walking out on children - and ignore that many women throw a man out of the children's lives, and ignore the women who walk out on the children. They talk about d/v as if only men abuse women - ignoring the sheer volume of statistics which show d/v about 50/50. They also ignore child abuse, aside from the minority of men who abuse children. They don't talk about female paedophiles - aside from positively (see the Vagina Monologues in which an adult woman rapes a minor. The chapter is called 'The Good Rape'). They talk about financial abuse, with the man painted as the abuser of course, but ignore women who do it to men (e.g. while in USA, I was once given a $5 and even that she complained about)... They talk about the 'glass ceiling' but ignore the lace curtain and maternal gatekeeping. Etc. etc. How is this mentality even remotely close to 'equality'? more

Resolved Question: Why do non vaccination parents fire up so much anger ?

I posted a question yesterday, about why parents didnt vaccinate their kids. It seems this subject fires up anger from people who did vaccinate their own kids. Why the anger? Even if I was putting my child at risk, the fact I researched the subject for 14 months means statistically, I am safer than someone who didnt read anything but the govenment leaflet. WHY? Because people like me also read up on car seat safety, pesticides in our food, filter water, child proof the home, buy cars because of their safety ratings, and so on and so on. The chances of my daughter even catching measles is around 1 in 60,000. Then the rates go down again, and again. There is more chance of us being killed in a car crash on the way to get the MMR than from the disease. That is statistically correct. Vaccination rates on council eastates in UK are high. Why, because they just go ahead, whilst some even smoke in the car with their kids. To say not vaccinating is child abuse, is a very tunnelled way of looking at the whole picture. I could equally say if you dont know the Lancet report, exact statistics of how many kids were permantly injured by whooping cough last year, like I do, That you neglect your kids more than me. Why all the hate against non-vaccinating parents. I hear sometimes its because we are putting ur kids at risk. Why if they have been vaccinated? Is it just because you have swallowed the pill, and if in 20 years time, they find out vaccinations is one of the criteria along with genetic subceptability that cause cancer MS and Autism later in life, we all go down with u?That isnt to say I am statistically safer than someone that researches vaccines , safety and all those other things and then chooses to vaccinate their kids. That is open to future research. Science changes u can never say MMR doesnt cause you head to go green, because in 30 years, a lot of things will be refuted again.Sophia .. Read the question. Its u I am talking about ...the lazy minded.Quote by not feeling creative : -"Finally, lets not forget that vaccination does not ensure protection against a disease" Nice post. Yes one of the reasons I didnt choose vaccination. What you are saying is I am selfish. Well for someone who didnt understand the question, maybe u answered it. Maybe I am.Reply to V lucky Mum, ..Sorry to hear that. My mum took something in 1978 for morning sickness that was recalled because of problems in babies. My 27 year old brother developed a rare tumour when most people in my family live until their late eighties. We just go along with doctors sometimes. But something isnt right. Science is keeping us alive longer, but causing illness and then curing it. Its like Coke sponsoring excercise in schools. Wouldnt it be better just to cut out coke? Something isnt right.2nd Reply to Not feeling creative : - I cant ask my Doctor, her surgury get approx £9000 a year for achieving so many vaccinations.O not feeling creative... Ok, i dont want to twist your words, Yes I did see an imunology expert. Its complicated, because I had an ADR at 2 months old from DPT, although I recovered after a month. Yes he did know a lot more than me. Satisfied? The CEO of Monasanto knows more than me about cows, but that doesnt mean I would buy milk from cows that used BST. Of course he would convinse me its safe. We are coming it from 2 different angles. You my friend are the sheep :)Reply to "My baby falls asleep smiling : - I did see an imunology expert, so no, I didnt just read all the anti vac stuff. Agree with rest of post.Reply to cinderel... Exactly - They said formula milk was better than Breast Milk. They also said margerine was better than butter. Capitalism at its best. :) Who is saying killer diseases, could it be the Pharmaceautical companies ?Jen L C ..jen you have much to learn. This is just a marketing ploy. You usually find and has been found that the same company that donates money to a childrens vaccination charity for every product you buy, probably exploits children working in sweatshops at the same time. You are not going to cure the problems of disease in the third world by buying pampers. Still who am I to judge. Vaccinations can save lives, so pampers is doing something. For them any risk is worth it due to living conditions and nutrition. Just like a mcdonalds hamburger might be good for them. Its irrelevent in the developed world.Quote by diot "If there was a vaccine that would prevent your child from dying in a car crash, would you get that vaccine for your child?" Ans Now your talking sense. I would say Yes I would let my daughter have a vaccine for that. Even if vaccine for that killed 1000 a year, I would allow a 1 off vaccine. Its a much bigger threat, and the person who said one of my family would have died by now without vaccination is misled about fear.Reply to "All Natural" - It was only a short question. Its the replies that make it look long : ) But seing as you dont have the energy to read as far as that, you have no place answering it, as you obviously havent read very much on the subject. The Autism debate is alive and kicking, only its changed now to does MMR trigger Autism in kids with an underlying condition. Thats the logical future for research. How do I know my kid doesnt have an underlying condition? More research needed ...Reply to cadensmo... Wakefield did not falsify data. That was an acusation written by Brian Deer who works for Sunday Times- which is owned by James Murdoch who is on the Board of a Pharmaceutical company that makes MMR. Wakefield was about to take out a law suite, but it turns out there is a loophole in the law that says it is not against the law to falsify news if its in the best interests of the people. A loophole Wakfield couldnt aford to take a chance on. The evidence still stands. A rare bowel syndrome was found in a small study of autistic kids. Its been replicated. It was the papers that overenflated the MMR issue because its you are more likely to suffer autism if you catch Measles and Mumps in the same year. Wakefield just said the MMR link should be investigated. He took funding because unlike other Doctors, pharmaceutical companies are unlikely to fund him. I believe he is a modern day Robin Hood.Reply to wee.tabi... Lol it has become a rant. But the original question wasnt. I just think its polite to answer everyone. This isnt even the beginning, and u could fill a whole book out on just one study. I am glad this has reached the 2nd page of Google if you tipe in Non- Vaccination. Maybe it will help people see our side. Its not a simple subject. Thank you all for your replies. Sorry I know it works people up. more

Resolved Question: How do you all read this article as i'm certain the Catholic Bashers will find some thing about it to attack?

By John Norton New attacks on Church over clerical child abuse It is ironic that a few days before fugitive child-molester Roman Polanski finally was arrested in Switzerland -- to the shocked outrage of the cinematic community and the filmmaker's native France and Poland (see Editorial, Page 19) -- a British secularist at the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva called for international action against the Vatican because of clerical sex abuse of minors. It was thought to be the first time the Vatican was criticized on the council's floor. And the Vatican's representative to the agency, after the meeting, issued a strongly worded defense. The criticism was levied by Keith Porteous Wood, executive director of England's National Secular Society and a representative of the International Humanist and Ethical Union. He's made similar arguments in the past, but never in the context of the U.N. meeting. "For decades the Church has got away with covering up child abuse on a huge scale," he said afterward. "The Holy See is in breach of its obligation under the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child. This challenge marks the start of our campaign to shame the U.N. and the international community into calling the Vatican to account." Considering the source, this campaign looks a lot more like an attack simply on organized religion. The Vatican didn't take it lying down. "As the Catholic Church has been busy cleaning its own house, it would be good if other institutions and authorities, where the major part of abuses are reported, could do the same and inform the media about it," said Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican's representative to U.N. agencies in Geneva, according to a report in England's Guardian newspaper. In a statement issued at the end of the meeting, Archbishop Tomasi pointed to statistics in a 2002 Christian Science Monitor report that most American churches being hit with child sex abuse allegations are Protestant. He also noted studies that show that 85 percent of sex offenders are family members or friends of the victims. So addressing child abuse means starting with preventive measures in the home. These facts need saying. Let us be clear: The point here is not to try to deflect attention from the problem as it exists or existed in the Catholic Church -- and the damage to souls should not be underestimated or dismissed. The point is that if we are truly concerned about addressing the problem of child sex abuse in society, an exclusive focus on the Catholic Church is going to miss a majority of the instances -- and begins to look an awful lot like animus against the Church for baser motives. more

Resolved Question: Are there any statistics that show an increase or decrease of child abductions/sexual abuse etc.?

My ex-wife doesn't want me to let my 7 year old daughter go to her friend's house (down 1 floor in my building) by herself. I think my daughter should be able to do the things that I did as a kid. Part of that is going to your friends houses without a bodyguard. The ex thinks that it's much worse today than it was when we were kids in the 80's. I don't think that is accurate and that we just hear about child abductions and sexual abuse more frequently because the news media sensationalizes these types of human tragedies more than they did back then. Is there any statistical data that can confirm either side of this disagreement? more

Resolved Question: *very urgent* Can some one tell me if this is essay sounds good so far?

does the introduction state the thesis well. can you start an introduction with a question? The Media Made Me Do It Has society really become that shallow minded to blame Television for the justification of the violent crimes being committed? No one wants to take the blame for anything, not even parents want to take the blame for their child’s behavior. “He has been misbehaving in school due to watching too much violence on TV”, a mother would say to cover up. What about the environment that a child was nurtured in, the people he was brought up by, the values that he may have been taught. Sure there may be some things that kids learn off of television, but is it ethical to blame the entire nature of a violent act on TV violence? In a recent article “Stop Blaming Kids and Television”, Mike Males states that the Japanese and European kids are exposed to similar types and amount of violence on TV, but the seventeen year olds in those countries commit murders at lower rates than American seventeen year olds (Males). Those kids in other countries are not learning violent acts from watching violence on television, even though they are being exposed to the same type of media. It could be a possibility that the parents of those children in Japan or Europe than those of Americans vastly differ in parenting styles. The kids in the other countries may have a different living environment where they are being raised, different friends that they spend time with, or a higher level of discipline from their parents. “Children [do poorly] at listening to their elders, but they never fail to imitate them” (Males). Parents have a great role in shaping their child’s overall behavior. It is just an unconscious way of development for children to act out as their elders. In the discussions of Oliver Stone’s film Natural Born Killers, Woody Harrelson makes a comment; “I don’t think anyone watches a two hour movie and decides that they want to become a serial killer”, and as silly as this may sound, it is completely true. Natural Born Killers is inflicting that maybe “we” humans have an instinct to kill that we are born with, just like animals. The wicked fantasies of violence that some people consist of could just be in their genes. Natural Born Killers was an obviously overworked film to show viewers how media portrays violence. In the film, bizarre crimes are committed by Mickey (Woody Harrelson) and Mallory Knox (Juliette Lewis) that are just too unrealistically made by special effects. The viewer has to agree on the fact that this film just shows unrealistic behavior. In the end, everyone knows that it is just a twisted love story that is solely meant for entertainment. During the scene I Love Mallory was displayed, Mallory’s dad (actor name) sexually abuses her inappropriately while yelling at her, shows that her childhood was the source of her violent behavior. Later into the movie after she Mickey kills her father, she yells “How you like it now”, over and over again, almost like it was a planned form of revenge. In the article, The Man Who Counts the killings, Scott Stossel includes a lot of statistics on the effects of early exposure to violence in kid’s behavior, but he leaves out other sources that violence can be learned from. In the article he states that by the time the average American child will leave high school, he or she will have witnesses more than 8,000 murders and 100,000 other kinds of violent acts on television (Stossel 169). One can see that that is a great amount of violence to be exposed to, but there is a greater possibility that it could have little or no effect on the child. Whereas a real life incident that he or she may have encountered during their childhood can have a greater impact than the amount of violence watched. Mike Males on the other hand, includes more childhood rearing techniques to back up his argument. During the eighteen years between the child’s birth and his or her high school graduation, there will be 15 million cases of actual violence in homes serious enough to require hospital emergency treatment (Males). This statement clearly has a more realistic output on the way behavior is shaped through early childhood experiences. more

Resolved Question: Step-father's and child abuse?

I just went to a conference the other day and they shared some alarming statistics. The most common type of sexual child abuse is from step-fathers towards their step-daughters. Why is this?? Why would a mother not see the signes or believe that her child is being abused? I've heard so many stories about women being abused by their step-fathers (or their mothers' boyfriends) that it's just alarming. more

Resolved Question: A obvious Anti Catholic asked a question why the Catholics Church has so many Pedophiles?

They then of course chose the answer that supported there belief and even responded claiming it was sad we Catholics did not face up to it.So i did a quick search and found this article and see if you agree?? Making your church safe for children (Published by Disciples Today, an online publication of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ, April 2002) When you attend church this Sunday, take a look around at the people in your congregation. For every five women and eight men in your church, statistics show one woman and one man were sexually abused by the time they were 12. The majority of these people knew the person who abused them. Since congregations are microcosms of our society, we can't ignore that sexual abuse and pedophilia can occur within a congregation. With media attention focused on the Catholic Church and allegations of clergy sexual misconduct shrouded in years of secrecy, be aware that the problem is not confined to the Catholic Church. Nor is the crime of pedophilia related to celibacy. "It's in every denomination," said Carol Q. Cosby, retired director for Social Action Networks in Disciples Home Missions, "including the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)." Late last year, Patsie Sweeden, regional minister, Christian Church in Kansas, learned that a former associate pastor and youth director from the Kansas Region had reportedly abused at least six young boys between 1979 and 1981. The pastor was serving in the Mid-America region at the time the abuse was reported to the Kansas regional office. "When [the Mid-America] interim regional minister became aware of the situation, he acted on it immediately," said Sweeden. "We had excellent cooperation across regional lines, we all exited a horrible situation feeling like a process had worked well." Sweeden said the pastor's standing in the denomination had been removed meaning he no longer had access to the relocation system of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and could not function as a pastor in the denomination. The legal system has acted on this situation as well. While Disciples have no central office to collect statistics on sexual abuse cases related to pastors, according to Cosby, United Church of Christ denominational officials report that during the past decade, credentials are stripped from a minister, on average, once every two weeks. Furthermore, the majority of cases were related to "some form of sexual misconduct," including pedophilia. (http://www.cpsdv.org/Articles/UCC_Response.htm) And a 1997 article in Christianity Today reports clergy are not the only offenders in a church. A 1996 profile in the Church Law and Tax Report concludes "volunteer workers are the most frequent abusers, constituting half of all sexual misconduct offenses in churches." (http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/7tb/7tb090.html) So who will protect the children? According to Father John Heagle of Therapy and Renewal Services, "In a community, not all of us are guilty, but all of us are responsible." So what can we do? "There are some basic things every congregation needs to do to keep children safe," said Kaye Edwards, director of Family and Children's Ministries in Disciples Home Missions. "We cannot assume that abuse is not going to happen simply because we are a Christian community." Edwards added that congregations should consider the following: Evaluate your building; Raise awareness and educate members of your congregation; Appoint a task force to develop and implement policies and procedures to protect the children and youth of your church; Screen all paid staff and volunteers who work with children and youth; Hold regular trainings for all paid staff and volunteers who work with children and youth. Protecting our children against sexual abuse is one of the most important things we can do as a church community. Before you leave your church this Sunday, take another look around, this time at the children in your congregation. Then pray for them ... and act to make your congregation a safe place for those children. No i did not miss the point. But you apparrently have. You all act like the Catholic Church is the only ones who covered up such evil behavior and that is the point this article was making. It look's as if were more than willing to admit it but you Protestants are still in denial..Looks like no one read the article but then again that does not surprise me as all you anti Catholic's would not accept any thing that just might prove your thinking is misguided.Hate has it's own way of destroying those who folow it being as it's one of Satan's better weapons at decieving and blinding. more

Resolved Question: Opinion on Statistics of Fatherless Children?

Opinion on Statistics of Fatherless Children? 85% of all children that exhibit behavioural disorders come from fatherless homes. 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes. 75% of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes. 70% of juveniles in state operated institutions come from fatherless homes. 85% of all youths sitting in prisons grew up in fatherless homes. 80% of rapists motivated with displaced anger come from fatherless homes. 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes. These statistics translate to mean that children from a fatherless home are: 20 times more likely to have behavioural disorders 9 times more likely to drop out of high school 10 times more likely to abuse chemical substances 9 times more likely to end up in state operated institutions 20 times more likely to end up in prison 10 times more likely to commit rape ... and 32 times more likely to run away from hometronix-a young boy needs a male role model to succesfully grow up in life. Here are a few of my ideas. 1. Handedness. It would include - Why are there so many more right handers than left? (Only ten percent of the population is left handed even less are ambidextrous why is this so?) - What determines what hand is going to be your dominant one? (E.g. what made me a left hander well ambidextrous) - Statistics - Names for lefties e.g. southpaw etc - Beliefs and myths about handedness especially left handedness - How left handed people think differently to right handed people (Because apparently they do) Death and Afterlife Beliefs - Hindu/Reincarnation - Heaven/Hell - Ghosts and Ghost sightings - Some stuff from Ancient civilizations like Incan and Egyptian - A bit on a few of the Gods and Goddesses of the underworlds and stuff Birds of Prey - Different types - Famous ones (From cartoons and that) - What they eat and how they hunt - Where they live - Speed, characteristics etc and other trivia facts on them - How they are used in movies and zoos etc (Lots of movies use some form of birds of prey, Mummy Returns, Harry Potter they used owls btw) so basically how they're taken care of on movie sets and trained and what kind of things are they used for Anastasia Romanov - Early Life - Russian Revolution - In captivity and death - Anastasia Impostors such as Anna Anderson - Finding of bodies and when she was missing etc - The Anastasia movie (Fox, the animation) how historically right was it. Did Bartok and Dimitri etc really exist in the real Rimanovs lives etc Biography on a famous composer. E.g. Mozart, Beethoven, Korsakov (He wrote flight of the bumblebee), Tcaikovsky (He wrote swan lake and the sugar plum fairy thing from the nutcracker) - Childhood - Life before composing (University etc) - Beginning of musical career - Experiences - Set backs - Composition of their pieces - Death - What happened with the pieces after their death are they still being used if so where and how? Epilepsy - Causes - Types of seizures - Management and cures - Use of animals in therapy (if any animals are used) - Signs Aurore Gagnon (She was killed by child abuse in Quebec in Canada in 1920 by her step-mum it changed the laws in Canada and she's now considered a martyr apparently) I would discuss: - Aurore Gagnon and her life - Her death - The trial of her step-mum and father - Their sentencing and what happened after they got out etc - How it changed the laws - How she is remembered now - Abuse, what to do, signs, symptoms, types and statistics etc. I know I already asked this but I just thought of the other so I had to re-ask. Resolved Question: What women say.............?

If a man sleeps with a woman and has second thoughts about it later on, they call it "fear of commitment." If a woman sleeps with a man and has second thoughts about it later on, they call it "date rape." If a man gets drunk and sleeps with a woman, they hold him responsible for his actions. If a woman gets drunk and sleeps with a man, they hold him responsible for her actions. When men judge women based on their looks, they call it "lookism," "sexism" and "oppression." When women judge men based on their looks and their salaries, they call it "dating." When a man says "You have to sleep with me to be an employee," they call it sexual harassment. When a lesbian says "You have to sleep with me to be a feminist," they call it "body de-colonization" and "political lesbianism." When a man says "some feminists hate men," he is engaging in stereotypes and bashing. When a feminist says "all men are potential rapists," she is raising issues. When feminists lie about rape, sexual harassment, domestic violence, anorexia and bulimia, they are nonetheless educating the public about legitimate issues. When you point out that feminists lie about rape, sexual harassment, domestic violence, anorexia and bulimia, you are guilty of backlash. When you ask why physical standards should be lowered so women can join the military, they say that it ensures equality. When you ask why only men are forced to register with the selective service and only men can be forced into combat against their will, they'll say that you are the one who starts all the wars. When you say that men should not be discriminated against, they will tell you that you hold all the power and privileges. When you say that you don't feel that way, they will point out rich men you don't even know. When you say that women in your work place have equal pay and equal numbers and no longer deserve special breaks and special promotions, they will cite some statistics from someplace else. If you say you are afraid of a violent woman, they will laugh at you and send you away without help. If you protect yourself from a violent woman, they will say that violence against women is always wrong, no matter what. If a woman accuses a Republican nominee of sexual harassment, they say "Why would she lie?" If several women accuse a Democratic president of sexual harassment, they say "She probably lied." If they want access to a predominantly male organization, club, or school, they say that "diversity" is good. If they want to keep men out of a predominantly female organization, club, or school, they say segregation is good. When a woman accuses a man of child abuse during a divorce or custody battle, they say "Believe the children." When the children themselves say they weren't abused, they don't believe the children. When a woman cannot support her children, they say we should raise taxes on everyone to set up more programs to help her. When a man cannot support his children, they says "Revoke the deadbeat's license and throw him in jail." When a man denies his children support money, they say he should be punished. When a woman denies her children a relationship with a warm and loving father, by thwarting his visitation rights, they say it's a "non-traditional family." When an unwed father wants custody of his child, they say "Think of the best interests of the children." When a mother wants custody of her child, they say "Don't punish a woman just because she works." If a man starts a statement with "All women are ..." he is using a stereotype. If a feminist starts a statement with "All men are ..." she is using a metaphor. more

Resolved Question: Mental health & men: "Women banded together...Men don't want to do that". What needs to be done to change this?

'Men's Mental Illness: A Silent Crisis' "It's being called a silent crisis, a sleeper issue. But there are signs that this sleeper is at last awakening. Around the world studies, surveys, web networks, journals and newspaper articles are shedding light on a shadowy subject: men's mental health. Among the findings is the revelation that new fathers are also vulnerable to postpartum depression. In Canada, young and middle-aged men are being hospitalized for schizophrenia in increasing numbers. The gender gap among people with mental illness is much narrower than might be suspected. The StatsCan Canadian Community Health Survey on Mental health and well-being found that 10% of men experienced symptoms of the surveyed mental health disorders and substance dependencies, compared to 11% of women. In the United Kingdom, studies of depression show a major shift in the traditional gender imbalance, with depression rising among men and decreasing among women. The greatest evidence of male vulnerability is in suicide statistics. Among Canadians of all ages, four of every five suicides are male. In the UK, men are around three times more likely to kill themselves than women. In New South Wales, Australia, suicide has overtaken car accidents as the leading cause of death in males since 1991. Barriers to seeking help According to the Toronto Men's Health Network (TMHN), even the concept of "men's health" is relatively new in Canada. Dr. Don McCreary, co-chair of TMHN, associate editor of the International Journal of Men's Health and one of a small handful of men's health researchers in Canada, says there are a number of reasons for this. One reason is the low priority given to men's health issues in the research community. More funding and more specialists in this area will encourage ongoing research into male mental health. Male and societal attitudes have fostered the silence. "The women's health movement was very self-directed," says Dr. McCreary. "Women banded together to work on problems with health delivery. Men don't want to do that. We have inculcated a culture in our society that men have to be tough, men have to be strong. Our society is very good at punishing gender deviation in men. Weakness is not considered to be masculine." The "code" governing men's behaviour is one of the prime barriers preventing men from seeking help. According to UK-based MaleHealth.com, men may feel it's "weak and unmanly to admit to feelings of despair." Because it's easier for men to acknowledge physical symptoms, rather than emotional ones, their mental health problems can go undiagnosed. Beliefs about masculinity also encourage men's general lack of interest in health issues; many men simply don't believe they are susceptible to depression, so why bother learning about it? Similarly, risky behaviour, seen especially in younger men - including abuse of alcohol and/or drugs and violence - can mask their emotional problems, both from themselves and their physicians. Western society's view of the value of men is seen as an important factor affecting men's mental health. An Australian study suggested that "there is a strong element of negativity in our culture about men which cannot contribute to positive mental health...". Greater recognition of the significance of men's roles as fathers and partners would help men cope with the difficult feelings that accompany a breakup and the loss of full access to their children. The social isolation experienced by many men at such a time is believed to a factor in the high rate of suicide amongst divorced men. Men and depression What do a firefighter, police officer, US Air Force First Sergeant, college graduate and publisher have in common? They are all male and they have all suffered from serious depression. They told their stories for the National Institute for Mental Health "Real Men. Real Depression." campaign. It's estimated that up to 6 million American men have depression each year - about half the figure for women. But this gender disparity is being questioned, in the US and elsewhere. In focus groups conducted by the NIMH, "men described their own symptoms of depression without realizing they were depressed." They made no connection between their mental health and physical symptoms, such as headaches, digestive problems and chronic pain. Dr. Michael Myers has noted the same thing, saying, "I couldn't do my job as a psychiatrist if I didn't listen to women describe their concerns about men." A psychiatrist and clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Myers says, "In men, mental illness can be masked. We've known for decades that women are more apt to recognize illness of any sort and go to their doctor. This doesn't mean women are healthier, but that some men just repress it. We believe a lot of somatization [symptoms] in men, for example, migraines, back pain, irritable bowel synDenial, blame, projection, rationalisation, justification...all the ego defense mechanisms in the world won't help. more

Resolved Question: Think of a title for my feature article?

ok its about teenage drug abuse for those who cant be bothered reading the whole thing, and i need a title which will sound good and stuff you know? yeh its due tomorrow son i only have tonight to think of one.. Are you a parent afraid your teenager may be at risk with drugs? Or do you already know your teen child has a problem with them? If yes, your not the only one in this situation, in a survey done in 2005, researchers found that almost one in five secondary students in Australia had tried marijuana at least once in their life, 7% had used it during the last month and these statistics are only about one of the many illegal drugs teens can be exposed to today. Teenagers today try doing drugs for many reasons, such as problems at home, stress at school, depression, peer pressure, or simply due to curiosity. However what many teens don’t know is how dangerous they really can be. What many teenagers don’t realise when they try an illicit drug is how badly they may be affected by it. Many can end up hospitalised, being mentally or physically damaged for the rest of their lives. While many teens go unharmed, a lot of teens end up with an addiction or being dependant on these drugs and keep taking them without knowing they are creating problems socially, physically and psychologically. Sarah, a 16 year old Perth girl is one teen who has been struggling with an addiction to the drug ‘ice’, otherwise known as Methamphetamine. Sarah began smoking the drug, when some other girls in her grade asked her if she wanted to come try it with them after school one day. She quickly developed an addiction for the drug, and her single mother Julie began noticing strange changes in her daughter such as random mood swings and strange sleeping patterns. Her group of friends had also changed and Sarah became very secretive as to where she would be going and who with. Julie finally realised about Sarah’s drug problem when she went into a coma due to the ice she had taken. Julie now has Sarah in therapy to help her get through her addiction. But Sarah’s problem is only one out of the many other Australian teens in similar situations. When teens use drugs, there are usually many signs in their behaviour and appearance that should be used as warnings. A common sign is a sudden change in personality and behaviour, work or school attendance may drop and the quality of work done in school may also go down. They may develop an unusual bad temper and have just an overall change in attitude. Another big warning sign is when a teen changes their group of friends suddenly. They may become very reluctant to speak about them and very secretive about what they are doing or where they are going with them. Their physical appearance may change, for example it may deteriorate. They might start wearing long sleeved shirts at strange times such as in summer when it is too hot for them. Another sign is when a teen borrows money at unusual times from their friends and family, they might also begin stealing small things from home or school. All these things should be warning sirens for revealing if a teen has been using illegal drugs. There are many ways teen these days can access drugs. A large number of teenage drug users use inhalants that are easy to access from simple everyday things such as spray paint, shoe polish or glue. Other teens will take prescription drugs when they are not needed and in large quantities. Teens have access to these drugs and many others such as marijuana, ecstasy, ice and mushrooms from other teenage kids, or even adults selling or giving them the drugs. There are many ways a teen can be prevented from abusing drugs. This requires a positive attitude from the teen, the parents and friends. Be sure to know all the affects of using these illegal substances and keep a good healthy and happy relationship between your family and talk about risks with each other. The teen should also keep themselves busy with activities such as sports or other hobbies to keep their mind active and open. Drug abuse is usually caused by stress at home or in school or by peer pressure, so by ensuring teens are well informed of the risks and are supported by their family and friends, they are at a much lower risk, but of course for some teens it is not as easy as all that. There is always help for teens who are thinking about using drugs or who already are, even if they may be in a stressful home due to relationships with their family. At schools there is always a way of getting help whether it is from a teacher, nurse or even a school psychiatrist or councillor. There are also free services for kids such as the kids helpline which has a phone number kids can call at anytime (1800 55 1800) and web counselling, in both of the teen will be able to talk to a real councillor who can help them. Teens should know they are never alone, and that there is always someone who cares and will help them. Being a teenager is arguably more

Voting Question: Is this a good conclusion on my research paper?

I DID MY RESEARCH PAPER ON CHILD ABUSE, BUT IM WONDERING...DOES MY CONCLUSION SOUND LIKE IT GOES MORE WITH AN ARGUMENTIVE ESSAY OR WITH A RESEARCH PAPER? As the years went by Jillian’s situation got worse, she started acting out, she became extremely disrespectful towards adults, and her kindness towards others started slowly slipping away. But overall, my understanding on this issue has totally changed. Observing my friend deal with it first-hand has helped me realize the seriousness of this issue. Society needs to start seeing it in the same manner. There are still those who lack the consciousness of those who are being abused and in need of help. If more people started communicating to the public on the seriousness of this issue, I feel more people would wake up to the realization of it. If not, than I predict that the statistics on child abuse cases will rise higher each year. more

Resolved Question: How come only men get threats and interrogation from the fathers of their dates?

Women never have to deal with getting beat up or getting grilled by the female relatives of their boyfriends. Yet statistics show women abuse men almost in equal number, initate most divorces, get child support, have 100% control over reproduction are just as emotionally abusive. Do mothers ever threaten or imply violence to their sons dates the way men do ? Am I right in assuming men do this or have I been watching too much tv? more

Resolved Question: Slapping your boyfriend vs slapping your girlfriend: why such different responses to the same question?

A few days ago, I asked a question about slapping a cheating boyfriend and a question about slapping a cheating girlfriend. Both questions were identical, except the genders were reversed: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Atc7liWO.j1cC6FrqsZBsw7sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090708180501AAjenYi http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Akhi2qNJfK3TBxJg2gwFW.nsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090709084851AAIST8Z I got a bit creative with the name-calling, but nobody really focused on that so I don't think it affected my experiment. Primary statistics: - Of the 12 responses, 8 felt that slapping a cheating boyfriend was appropriate (4 even recommended kicking him in the nuts). - Of the 19 responses, 2 felt that slapping a cheating girlfriend was appropriate. - Nobody mentioned that slapping the boy was abuse or that she needed to die for considering it. Why such different responses to the same question? I will concede that I asked these questions in the "Singles & Dating" category, so it's highly likely that the responders were relatively young and/or relatively immature. But that just raises another question of what exactly are we teaching our children about domestic violence and appropriate ways to handle relationship conflicts? Any other observations or comments you'd like to make? more

Resolved Question: Do you think I would get into UCLA?

I am a rising senior at a very competitive public high school in Florida. (For reference, we are one of the top 100 high schools in the nation as noted by Newsweek.) Right now I'm 98th in my class - my class has around 500 people so I'm barely in the top 20th percentile. However, I would easily be at a higher percentile if I went to a less competitive school. I have a 3.77 unweighted GPA and a 5.34 weighted GPA, though I know these are recalculated to include all academic courses. I have a 1930 on my SAT - 650 reading, 600 math, and 720 writing (10 on the essay). I got a 650 on a math portion that I took before, though, so I'm going to take it again and hopefully bring that score up to a 700, or bring my writing up to a 700 and maintain a 650 in math. I got a 630 on the Literature subject test and I'm planning on taking the French subject test later on this year. My schedule for 9th grade was: Biology I Honors/Gifted, English I Honors/Gifted, Algebra II Honors/Gifted, Band IV (the highest band in my school), Art 2D/American Government Honors, French I, and Creative Writing I/Semantics and Logic. My 10th grade schedule was: Chemistry I Honors, Pre-Calculus, French II Pre-AP, AP World History, Health/Drawing and Painting I, Band IV, and English II Honors. I dropped out of Band in 11th grade because I wanted to focus on my academics more and it paid off; in ninth and tenth grade I would make six A's and one B every quarter, and in 11th grade I made straight A's the entire year. My 11th grade schedule was: AP US History, History of the Holocaust/Driver's Ed, Math Analysis, AP Environmental Science, AP English Language and Composition, French III Honors, and History of the Vietnam War/Creative Writing II. My senior schedule will look like this: AP Statistics, AP Psychology, AP English Literature, AP French Language, Physics Honors, Philosophy Honors/? (not sure yet), and TA. I know they emphasize progression in grades but I'm worried I haven't taken enough AP's. I will be president of French Honor Society next year and am secretary for a volunteer club that helps underprivileged kids in my area. I have 48 community service hours right now but that number will easily grow past 100 after this summer and 150 by the middle of the next school year. Every Tuesday and Thursday I tutor elementary schoolers in reading and math through the volunteer club mentioned previously. I am currently working as a receptionist at a child abuse center for the summer. I'm a member of the Ecology Club, Social Studies Honor Society, French Honor Society, a volunteer club for kids, and a community service club at my school. I will be in NHS next year. I've been in FHS for 3 years and the others for two. I played trumpet instrument for five years and have played the steel drums, violin, and clarinet before. I have a bit of an odd situation when it comes to my home life, which I plan to write about in my personal statement. My brother was born with a disability and permanent brain damage. The doctors who operated on him told my mother he would die at birth. My family was poor at the time and my mother went into a serious spiral of depression which lasted till around a year ago. She is getting better now, but it has had a hard effect on me. Both my parents had to constantly pay attention to my brother's needs and lauded over every small accomplishment he made. I've grown up with a mother who battled depression throughout my childhood and never really served as a role model for me. This was hard, as I had to figure things out for myself that a mother normally would teach me. I learned to cope with this disadvantage through writing. I found my passion in creative writing and have been writing now for well over seven years. I also spend lots of time doing community service. Instead of wallowing about this situation, I prefer to help others, namely young children. I strive to be a positive mentor to them so they can reach their full potential and receive the attention I didn't while growing up. A lot of people I know do community service so it will 'look good on a record'; I prefer to do it because I find a genuine passion in it. As a secretary of the volunteer club at my school, I organize events, keep the club organized by taking notes, and have created a website from scratch so members and officers of the club will have efficient means of getting information. I know I'm not perfect, but I would like an honest opinion. I'm out-of-state, so I know my chances are lessened, yet out-of-state has a higher admission rate (27%). Any honest feedback would be appreciated! (I just realized how huge my comments were... sorry!)Sorry, I have a 1980 on my SAT! more

Resolved Question: Where would I find statistical information on Navajo Indians?

I am trying to find out statistics on child abuse and neglect within the navajo nation. Can you tell me where I might find the information online? Any suggestions would help, thanks.I am sorry that I offended you, but you're right, there is child abuse within all races. I should have explained the situation a little more. I have a relative who had told me that the Navajo tribe had really high child abuse rates. I wanted to check for myself that way when I had the information I needed, I could confront this person. Again, I apologize for offending you. more
