Ebony Abuse Questions asked

Voting Question: Help Revising A Paragraph I Wrote (for Present Tense, Syntax, Sentence Structure, etc)?

I need some help revising a pragraph that I had written for one of my essays. I just need some help checking to make sure it is all in Present Tense, and then fix any Syntax errors, Sentence Structure, Clarity, Flow, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated: The Curious Incident and Snow White both contain the fractured family archetype in regards to having an absent father and no real mother figure being present, but they are different when looking at the storyline and the way the archetype is used. Snow White begins with a queen sits sewing at a window, and the queen pricks a finger with a needle and a drop of blood falls on the snow that had fallen on the queen’s ebony window frame. Soon after the Queen wished for a daughter, the queen gives birth to a baby girl who has skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair black as ebony. They name her Princess Snow White. As soon as the child is born, the queen dies. This is the first sign of a fractured family. Moreover, soon after, the king takes a new wife, who is beautiful but very vain. The queen possesses a magical mirror that answers any question, to whom she often asks: "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is fairest of all?" to which the mirror always replies, "You, my queen, are fairest of all." But when Snow White reaches the age of seven, she becomes as beautiful as the day, and when the queen asks her mirror, it responds: "Queen, you are full fair, 'tis true, but Snow White is fairer than you." Though in another version, the mirror simply replies: "Snow White is the fairest of them all." The queen becomes jealous, and orders a huntsman to take Snow White into the woods to be killed. She demands that the huntsman return with Snow White's heart as proof of her killing. This is a clear sign of a fractured family, because this can be seen as child abuse, and there is no love between the queen and Snow White. There is not connection between Snow White and the Queen, and Snow White’s father is not present to stop this, which is another sign of a fractured family. Furthermore, this is quite different from how the archetype is portrayed in The Curious Incident. Christopher never had a true mother figure in his life, and he did not know what a complete family meant. His whole life was being lived in a fractured family, as Christopher and his father constantly argued over everything. This forced Christopher into isolation, and he had no connection with any member of his family; except his rat Toby. No one was out to kill Christopher, and no one was jealous of him, but it was Christopher who pushed for disconnect with his family. An example of this is when Christopher says, "I had to get out of the house. Father had murdered Wellington. That meant he could murder me, because I couldn't trust him, even though he had said 'Trust me,' because he had told a lie about a big thing." This shows the reader that he does not have any trust in his father, and he needs to be as far away from his own father as possible. This is a sign of a disconnected family, and Christopher is aware of the situation at hand. It is clear that both The Curious Incident and Snow White share similarities in atmosphere and the presence of the archetype, but it is the way that the archetype is used and the context of the stories that are different. **THIS IS JUST THE 2nd BODY PARAGRAPH (I HAVE WRITTEN THE ESSAY ALREADY)** more

Resolved Question: Please rate my poem and give feedback!?

Here are my poems. If you liked them, please rate and say why, and what could be improved. If you didn't like them, please rate and say why. Try not to be mean, but i'm tough so if you want to be cruel, go for it, i'll fire right on back. Passed _________ Breaking dawn, sad and slow The passing seemed so far away now, so long ago The sun breaks through the evening gloom Shutting out the cold, and heartless moon Sunrise takes place of bitter dawn The morning smiles, a bittersweet song Her eyes glazed and thoughts askew Her mind more blurred than the fog that passed through Sunset prevails, blanketing her heart with fear Death brushed past, laid a tear on her cheek Delicate as a flower, though saddened and meek Her spirit was withering Her body was dead Her heart was torn and mangled Like her life’s hanging thread The storm rolled in, took the sullen clouds for a ride Passed over the lakeshore watching the ocean A steady pattern One smooth, flowing motion Dusk swept in, hiding the mess Now fate steps in to handle the rest _____________________ Give me life, breathe me, shape me, mold me, form me like clay, soft and malleable, gently rolling in your palms, caressing your soul, red, like your warmth Like our love You give my love shape You give it strength You give me life Mold me Hold me I am yours to take I am yours to break In your smooth gentle hands But why Why take so much care To give me form Life And then leave me to rot Crack in the sun Wither in your memory Your fiery heart As hot as a kiln As fierce as the flame That ignited our love But smoldered When you realized You wanted a sculpture And I I am just a shadow The shell Of our masterpiece _______________________ The Lives We Live Clouds bleached with our pure Christian tears Setting sun drenched in the blood of our lives. Entangled in the vineyards that is wrapped around our hardships Followed by the resounding voice of our harmonious cries. This is the way we live our lives There is no-one to witness our rapid demise. No one answers our desperate cries This is the way we live our lives No one to represent our beautiful kind. Our ebony skin Our dark opal eyes Stolen from our family Taken as a prize No-one is present to hear our solemn cries No one to witness our wretched demise Feed the cotton with the blood off our backs See the horizon through our windowless shacks No one to hear of our solemnity No one to witness our animosity We’re waiting for deliverance Waiting for someone to cut the shackles off our feet While we march to our spirituals in an ever loudening beat The crack of the whip on our bare, scarred backs Covered in bruises, lacerations and cracks. Do they not see, how the break us so? Though our appearance is young, Our spirits are old They beat our children Steal our wives Abuse our spirits, And torment our lives Our souls are weary Tired of the every growing road With our bondage there is no deliverance For the young, or old. This is the way we live our lives No one answers our desperate cries Feed the cotton with the blood off our backs See the horizon through our windowless shacks This is the way we live our lives No one to deliver us, or answer our cries more

Resolved Question: To any writers out there...can you tell me what you think of the start of my story?? please?

First things first, this is the first part of the story and I'm trying my best not to give away any more of the plot. I've also tried really hard not to make the beginning a cliché. My story starts in a doctors office in a hospital where a psychiatric doctor is talking to a girl called Evangeline. I would like some advice: Is it written well? If not how can i improve? Is it factually accurate? (not expecting everyone to know this but how could i make it more realistic?) Have i laid it out ok? Where do i need to put paragraphs etc? Can you understand the dialogue in terms of being able to recognise who's talking? Thanks for any help and please keep criticism constructive? If i'm doing something wrong, please tell what i'm doing right too :) *** “So. Evangeline, isn’t it?” “Eve’s fine.” There was a four second silence. “So, Eve” He paused, waiting for her dull gaze to refocus onto him. “You were found in your bathtub, water cold, semi conscious, not to mention severely intoxicated, and with ___ grams of paracetamol in your system” “Yes” “And your mother claims” He took a deep but silent breath before continuing. “Your mother claims that you made an extremely serious accusation of sexual abuse against her partner, Derek…which you claim dates back 12 years” She gently ground her teeth and swallowed, tilting her head upwards. “And which, after a confrontation with your mother, lead to your apparent attempt at ending your life.” Again, Evangeline’s head turned towards the ceiling, this time in an unavailing attempt to hold back tears that she thought couldn’t possibly exist, her dark, cobalt eyes welling up. “It broke her heart” She replied, her usually strong voice fracturing. She frowned and inhaled sharply, her voice quickening. “He used to call me his little Evie.” A small tear traced the curve of her cheek and slowed when it reached her parted lips. She wiped her cheek gently onto her shoulder, the soft material of her navy hooded jumper readily absorbing the tear. He jostled around in his seat, unfolding his arms in an attempt to deformalise the situation. “Eve, are you aware of the things you said whilst in the state you were in? It seems to me that you could be posing a threat to your own safety and perhaps the safety of others.” He paused. “The erratic behaviour you have displayed has led us to believe that you could benefit from a short stay in a psychiatric hospital.” She turned her head towards the window on her right and winced slightly. The winter sun streamed through the glass and added a chocolate richness to her ebony hair. “How long?” “Until you’re better Eve. You’ll be in a safe environment, and we’ll get you on some medication to help with these strong emotions you’re feeling.”Stephanielee I'm 17 :) xErm - I see what you mean about her not putting up much of a fight. I think she is just too dazed and confused to understand the severity of what's about to happen to her. I think the reluctance will come soon. As for the erratic behaviour, i haven't elaborated much on that yet, as i want it to come out later in the novel. Her erratic behaviour was making threats to her own life and threatening to kill her abuser Derek. xThank you so so much these answers are amazing and so helpful! more

Resolved Question: Blacks neglecting "racism"?

I am in no way a racist but... are blacks abusing the fact that they were enslaved over 100 yrs ago? They have affirmative action, BET, Ebony magizine, among other things. If whites were to do this, acusations of racism and images of the KKK/ Nazis would flood the media... If (and most likely, when) Obama gets elected President, do you think anything would change? Thanks for all the answers! Another thought, by setting themselves apart from everyone else, aren't they just feeding the descrimination the seek to destroy? Just something to chew on..bella kimberly: thank you for proving my point. more

Resolved Question: What comments do you have about this poem about abuse?

RECOVERY? Precious Love I am corrupted. I feel naked. I feel absent of anything that Others call love. I wish I could throw dirt on this recurrent Image of shame and Cover my name On this, this emotional monument. Precious Love I don't want to remember I was buried here, or Who buried me To long for prisms, for sparkling daylight or, To escape my soul-less ebony. I don't want to know Who told me to go Into an underground so deep That I have grown old Excusing myself For living my life so meekly. But today, I ask myself, Timorously, Who do I apologize to For what was done to me? To whom do I inure responsibility? Precious Love If you witnessed my fall Let it be As a leaf which flutters With winds and whims In something I can begin to call Life. Yes, Life. Life and Love. Precious Love. I no longer wonder why This is all that I have left to give. Precious Love. I will take what I've learned is you. I will take anything. more

Resolved Question: Can you help me find a missing Ebony article?

Looking for an Ebony magazine article. I can't remember the name, nor the author of the article. I believe it was published about 1990. The subject of the article is as follows: The article was about a black man who worked on a civilian paint crew along with other black men and painted U.S. Naval ships. He and fellow painters were regularly abused by a white Naval officer who supervised their crew. The subject painter, was a former Naval war hero. Based upon that status, he was able to make a request for a formal inspection of the ship they were working on. The inspection was attended by high ranking Naval officers. By conducting the inspection, he was able to embarrass the officer who had been inflicting abuse upon himself and fellow painters. I have contacted Ebony twice, but they have never responded. I have gone through past issues, and have also had library help, to no avail. I know this is a long-shot, but I am hoping for help more
