Resolved Question: I thought Pit bull terriers were banned here in the UK?

In a news paper I was reading it said how a dad and his 14 year old son were attacked by their family pet a (pit bull terrier). Also my local rescue centre has an American pit bull puppy for adoption; I thought they were banned, oh and a neighbor of my friend has one too but they got rid of it as it ripped the ear off of their west highland terrier. i finally convinced my parents to get me a puppy for my birthday. at my local pound theres a male westie thats up for adoption. ive never had a dog before so this would be my first. i would love to know facts about them! are they cuddley? can you pick one up? [how much can a male westie weigh?] can you take a westie with you on an airplane? like can they stay with you? [cuz ive heard chihuahuas can stay next to ur seat in a cage] what airlines let you take them on board? how often do they need to be taken for a walk? do they do well with other dogs? and this is very important, can they be left home for 6 hours while i am at school? or will they rip up the furniture and get a phobia of being alone and be wicked lonely?[my cousins dog has a phobia of being home alone] ! so please answer all these questions! more

I am looking for a small to medium sized dog breed that is good with young children. I have a 15 month old that has just started walking, as well as an 8 and 13 year old. -Will mostly stay inside. -Would like a laid back lap dog that can sit in the chair with us and will play once in a while. -Don't want yappy, hyper, or jumpy. -Prefer low shedding I like the terrier size but am worried about them jumping on, chasing, and nipping young children. Considering the following with noted concerns: Miniature Schnauzer-are they really barky? Do they have tons of health problems? Corgi-concerned with toddlers? A lot of shedding? West Highland Terrier-hyper, jumpy? Cairn Terrier-great wtih kids but very unintelligent and hard to train? I have tried my local shelters but they won't allow adoption for households with children under 6.
