Resolved Question: Why is American culture so hostile to science, maths, and intellectuality? Is it related to Christianity?

Pardon me if I come off as arrogant in asking this question. It isn't my intention, and I understand that such a question might seem insensitive and could evoke some rather strong responses. When compared to its European and Asian, first world counterparts, the United States is far more religious (and far far more of the Evangelical/Fundamentalist variety) AND has a far more hostile cultural reaction to intellectualism, science advocacy, and the general pursuit for knowledge. I'm not just talking about the expected derision for the class nerd among children, but even American adults (in general, not all) seem to have disdain for science. Americans won't watch a movie unless there's sex or explosions in it. There was once a time when we could find a "Science" column in our local papers, and now, we're lucky to get a single science article every month or so. And even then, you get a horde of anti-intellectual Americans, usually in electronic form, blathering on in some comments section about how said article wasn't really newsworthy, yet the same individuals smile with giddiness while reading about America's newest popular "reality show" or whom Britney Spears might be sleeping with next. Only in America is there a "controversy" over teaching evolution in school. Only in America, it seems, That Nobel Laureates are looked at as pointy headed weirdos. Only in America are there actually debates over abolishing government organizations such as NASA, simply because the average (see: dumb) American cannot in his incredulous little head think of any direct benefit from such organizations. Only in America is the term "liberal elitist" and "ivory tower academic" used as slurs! Mind you, this isn't some new phenomenon either. Those of us who were around for the McCarthy days know that this streak has historically been much worse, especially so when the average American saw no distinction between advocacy of communism and those who were well educated. Considering America's recent return to fierce anti-communist/socialist rhetoric, and in turn illogical means of arguing their point (see: any freakishly stupid "tea-parties" popping up across in states coast to coast), while religiosity is on the rise, I'm wondering if there's any relationship between the two. So tell me, is America's anti-intellectualism related to its vociferous Christianity or are they independent of each other?For those who might care about my credibility in the matter, I'm a rather old, American born male who has lived throughout Europe, Japan, and China. I've currently moved back to the US and am shocked at how much our culture has devolved. more

Hell, even my two 35-year-old co-workers went to see her live at the AAC in Dallas. Britney seems to have won and/or re-gained the respect from the mass audience. Has your view of Britney changed in the wake of the revitalization of her music career? Have you developed deep inside you a newfound R-E-S-P-E-C-T for Britney? Resolved Question: For people who hate movie remakes, how upset would you be if these classic films were remade in this manner?

As a movie fan, I strongly dislike remakes of classic movies. Even though there have been a few exceptions (e.g. "Scarface" with Al Pacino, John Carpenter's "The Thing" and Peter Jackson's "King Kong") which haven't been that bad or actually good, most remakes almost always turn out to be utter garbage and uncomparable to the original movies on which they were based. With the recent remake of "Fame" which was just released, Hollywood has proven that even Oscar-winning and critically acclaimed films from the past are open targets for being remade. Sadly, it doesn't look like the trend is going to end any time soon either. Since movie studio executives tend to be only concerned about making money and focusing primarily on the teenage demographic which makes up the largest percentage of the movie-watching audience...how horrible would it be if Hollywood remade these classic films to cater to that demographic? Imagine the following awful remakes... 1) A remake of the 1939 film "Gone With The Wind" with Megan Fox as Scarlett O'Hara and Channing Tatum (from "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra" and "Step Up") as Rhett Butler? 2) A remake of the 1961 film "Breakfast At Tiffany's" with Paris Hilton in Audrey Hepburn's role? 3) A new adaptation of the 1965 musical "The Sound Of Music" with Britney Spears in Julie Andrews' role? 4) A remake of the 1982 film "Gandhi" with Kal Penn (of "Harold & Kumar" fame) as Gandhi? 5) A remake of the 1985 film "The Color Purple" starring the former contestants from the VH-1 reality shows "Flavor Of Love" and "Charm School" and featuring Flavor Of Love runner-up Tiffany "New York" Pollard in the lead role (originally played by Whoopi Goldberg)? Resolved Question: Why can't pop artists sing their songs live?

It's a shame, really. Most of those artists have 1, 2 or 3 successful song. You would think that if they only have a few songs and they're paid a bunch of money for those, they gotta at least master them. Hell no, if they don't lipsinc, they're going to deliver an awful performance. All the recent pop artists do that, that's nuts. It's lipsinc most of the time, though, I would feel ripped off if I paid to see someone dancing while there's this one track playing in the background. Hopefully, you're never gonna see lipsync in the metal scene. Metal bands actually CAN play their songs, their records aren't shit built in professional studios designed to make money.
