Resolved Question: Baffling crossword clues?

There are two clues to a crossword puzzle today : 'Lay about China, an ancient place' (7 letters); and the easier clue, 'Non-professional'. This isn't a competition; there are no prizes, there's only my bafflement ! 'Amateur' seemed the obvious fit for 'nonprofessional' but I can't get 'an ancient place' from it or anything to do with China. 'Lay' as in a poem ('Lays of Ancient Rome') or 'lay' as in 'secular' or 'lay' as in non-specialist ... ? I've drawn a blank but I bet someone will have the answer in seconds... samchuck : Thanks, 'recline' wouldn't fit with the other clue, 'non-professional' though. The natural word to match 'non-professional' is 'amateur' but I can't for the life of me see a connection with 'China'. 'Recline' might do duty for 'lay' but I've a sense that 'lay' refers to a song, ballad or poem. I thought of Coleridge's 'Kubla Khan' which might just about be a 'lay about China' but it leads nowhere else. I appreciate your ingenuity but I don't think either of us has got there yet. Help valued, however. more

Resolved Question: I just got a letter from Caesar Touristik GmbH saying I've won a free holiday. Is this a scam?

I've won a holiday to Südtirol and they've invited me for tea and cake at a local hotel to discuss the details. On the letter is a photo of 4 happy looking old people. I'm wondering if this is some kind of scam targeted at retired people. Did anyone else get the letter? I live in Basel, Switzerland more

Resolved Question: Which short story was this?

I remember reading a short story by Jeffrey Archer. I can't recall the title or the book it was from. I'm posting the plot below, and hopefully someone will be able to tell me the details, as it's one of his best: The plot: There's a gentleman and a lady who are in an institute, where both are reputed for their unmatched expertise in literature. They're far ahead of the rest, but near about equal when pitted against each other. Initially, they share a mutual dislike. Then slowly things start changing. They become affectionate and eventually fall in love. There's an essay writing competition during the story where both of them share the first place, although I don't remember if it was before or after they fell in love. Finally, the tragic end: They're married, and old now. There's a crossword which the gentleman tries to solve, but one word remains. He realizes what that word is while his wife is not at home, or while he has left. (or something like that).Unfortunately, the wife suffers from a cardiac arrest and passes away, before the gentleman could let her now what the last word was. He then shoots himself after having left a note to a friend, which read something like: "Dear ........, sorry, I just had to let her know". Somebody please tell me the short story title and the compilation it's from. Thank you.I don't think it was Cat O Nine Tails. Can someone confirm? I need the title of the short story and the compilation. more
