Open Question: What Should i do and where should i go for college???? Music Carrier or Astronomy Carrier?

Im 15 years old and i live like 60 miles from Houston Texas. i don't know what ti do for or especially where to go for college. I am pretty smart in school but im not a nerd (Im like the rocker type kid with long hair, skinny clothing, band tees, and so fowarth). i usually find myself making As and Bs but since this year,(im in the 8th grade, and i was held back a grade because i used be homeschooled), ive been struggling a bit and i am making a few Cs and have made 1 F. I find that science is the easiest subject to understand and all of science easy to memorize. (id forget to study for a big test or do the test reviews and i still get high Bs and Low As). I am good at my other subjects but i find that im good in math but i am not the type who can stay focused doing a million math problems. i find maht and history very dull and reading and language arts is just boring like the others. Also, i love Rock and Metal music (Unlike these retarded snoby rednecks). I play the guitar and have been playing guitar self tought for 1 year and really dedicated. I am trying to learn music theory and all the things i need to be able to write songs, improvise, read sheet music and all that stuff. Id really like to do a music carrier but id make more money in the science carrier like astronomy or something like that. I don't know what to do because id want to do the music carrier but i know that my dad would not (in a not angry but convincing type way) approve that idea and a astronomy carrier would make more money (unless i become a famous rockstar or something). If i choose the Music carrier, where should i go to college???? Im thinking maybe Austin Texas since it's one of the biggest music citys in the world and maybe id have a bigger chance of getting a good job in Austin. But for the astronomy carrier, i did not think of this until now but maybe Universty of Houston since it's close to Johnson space station and that my dad might mostly recomend UH since he went there for college. My heart sets closer to the music carrier but that might be hard to get into and i don't know how i would get in since my dad would not be too enthused at the idea and that i've only started learning guitar and music last year. Also, for the music carrier, what kind of jobs can i get? i want to be able to play my guitar and make songs and stuff. And what kind of jobs can i get in the Astronomy carrier??? Resolved Question: What are some things I can do to get better at guitar?

I've been playing not quite a year and I'd say I'm okay. I can play most songs I hear -- some of the hardest songs I've learned are Under the Bridge (RHCP), Black Dog (LZ), Surf Medley (Jr. Brown), stuff like that) -- and I write my own material. But there's a lot of guitarists better then me, and I don't seem to be improving at all. What can I do to get better? I've gotten bored with learning all these songs, and it doesn't seem to be helping me. Also, when I DO feel like learning something, it feels way too easy to the point where it's boring or way to hard to the point where it feels impossible. What can I do? How do I get better at guitar? I'm willing to work. Any advice? How did people like Stevie Ray Vaughn get to where he was at? P.S. DO NOT SAY "JUST PRACTICE." What do I need to practice? What will speed it up? Me and my gf have been dating for almost 7 months now. Everything is going great and she is definitely the most amazing girlfriend I've ever had hands down. I'd totally describe her but that won't exactly pinpoint how I feel about her. Before I questioned it but now I'm certain... I'm definitely falling in love with her and at this point I don't want to just randomly toss those words around. I'm afraid i'll end up ruining what we have. But i decided that life's too short and even if she doesn't love me back I'm going to tell her how I feel; what the hell might as well cause holding it in ain't easy. But the thing is I'm not just going to randomly tell her I decided I am going to do it the best way I can and make it special. SO I learned how to play 1234 by Plain White t's on my acoustic guitar and I sing and play for her on her birthday in May. I'm also gonna take her to a romantic place of course lol. I'm putting LOTS of time into learning this song for her and tell her I lvoe her through the song. Ready for the bad part? We've had this conversation about love before and well, frankly, let's just say it didn't go well. Well it did at the time because I didn't love her then and she clearly flat out told me she doesn't love me(we had this conversation around our 4th or 5th month). Now I'm in no rush like I said, I'm perfecting this song for her and everything. But now I'm confused.... What bugs me is she said that she doesn't feel that way about me but i'm honestly confused on whether or not she feels the same. I feel like she'll really appreciate the time I put into this song for her, but unfortunately I just don't know if she even feels the same. One day though i managed to spot the word "love" in her prettiest handwriting written on her inner thigh very lightly. I didn't say anything because well I thought I was just makin a big deal outta nothin. My theory is maybe she got bored and ddid it. But it was in her best handwriting that I've ever seen and... why would she take the time to randomly do that? I'm just going to tell her through the song like I said. I know she'll love it. But what scares me is the fact that she might not love me back and I'm afraid I'll lose her after I say it through the song. We will have been dating for almost 9 months when I finally do this. My main problem is that i don't know where to begin. in a few months my sister is getting a bass for her birthday and I want to get a head start on learning so I can teach her as well. Voting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?

I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Resolved Question: Which is more worth the effort? Guitar or Piano?

I've asked a question similar to this before, but I am still very unsure as to which will benefit me more in the long run. People say that if you can play the piano, you can play anything (hypothetically speaking, you wont be able to play any instrument), but they also say that piano is hard to learn, and in all honesty I found it rather easy when i started learning as a child. For guitar I find it more confusing and difficult, and I hate the sound of electric guitars unaccompanied, so I would only be able to play acoustic, but my old guitar teacher said I wouldn't have as many song opportunities for that. Also, my music teacher is a pianist, so I could easily get the lessons, we have to have a hired guitarist for lessons on that. I know piano sounds like a better option, but I'm worried to commit myself to something that I may regret. I cannot learn both, but I suppose I could learn the other once I am older. So, what seems to be a better option? Piano or Guitar? (by the way, I own a guitar, but not a proper piano/keyboard. When i try to play a fast run, my fingers are very high off the fretboard. What is an easy way to fix this, and is it worth it to try to? I would rather not re-learn how to play fast. Does anyone else have this problem? more

Voting Question: Guitar Players: G Major Chord problem?

Problem is, I'm learning the so called "easiest" guitar chord, the G chord. For some reason I'm not finding this as easy as they say it is lol. The problem is where my ring finger goes, on the first string. When I place my other fingers on their strings and frets then push down, and play, my ring finger obviously doesnt push down hard enough or something cause the strings dont ring right. I cant seem to get my ring finger to keep pushing down while my other fingers are way at the top. Any suggestions? Should I just keep practicing? more

Resolved Question: how do I play Guitar F chord easier?

I've looked at other answers and mine isn't exactly the same question. I am a beginner and I am learning the F Chord like this: | 1 | | | | 1 | | | | | 2 | | | | | 3 | x x My problem is I can get the flat finger for E and B, but the third finger on the D string dampens the sound of the G string when i stretch it that far. It isn't on the fret either, i just have thick fingers. I have to contort my hand to get even a glimpse of a good sound. I know I have to practice, and stretch, I was just wondering if by anyway there are tips for finger placement to help my hand stop hurting. I have writhing pain in my thumb (behind the neck of the guitar) and half way down my arm. Am I doing something wrong? more

Resolved Question: I want to play guitar but my hands are too small, should I get a ukuele?

I have a guitar that i recieved for Christmas last year. Im almost 16 and my hands for my guitar are way to small, because I try to hit chords and my fingers just can't reach the frets. I've also realized this for my piano too. I have trouble using both hands because of my small hands. What I've been meaning to ask is if I should buy a ukulele? I really enjoy the sound and the culture thats behind it. I've started to learn a little bit of the Hawaiin language. So since i can barely play my guitar which I forgot to mention, my mom bought one for smaller people but its still a normal size guitar but just slightly smaller, but do you think a ukulele would be easier to play? Since the frets are smaller and the reach wouldn't be so bad. If so then what kind of ukulele should I get?I know it might sound weird when I say my hands are too small but my hands are smaller than everybody's hands in my family even my 9 year old brother and my other two younger siblings. I also play clarinet and tenor saxophone which is a strugle because my pinkies can hardly reach. I've tried and tried my guitar but simple chords are just impossible if they require two fingersoh yes and to answer if I wanted to play in Hawaii? Well as much as I'd want to I don't think it's possible. I love the culture but I want to be a Music Education Major and I don't think they'd have much opportunity there. I've been teaching myself to play guitar and I am pretty good with chord switches. I know how to play two songs- Take it Easy by the Eagles and You Belong with me By Taylor Swift, but when I want to learn a new song, I can't figure out how to strum the guitar. the only way I know how to play the two above songs is because some one told me how to strum them (Ex: 1 2 3 & 4; up stroke on the &. Ok so basically I've been learning for about 2 years and as far as moving my fingers around and things like that I can do. But I can't play ANY songs all the way through and I just have a hard time getting the sound that I'm supposed to be getting when I'm trying to learn something. I can follow by tabs, but it never sounds like the song I'm trying to play. So what I want to know, is that saying that I'm just not "guitar minded"? I usually am a fast learner, and I expected guitar to take some time to learn. But two years later and its as if I just picked a guitar up. I would love to get better, but I just don't know what/how to learn and it just seems like its not the best fit. Learning drums also sounds fun, but I live in an apartment and that just wouldn't work right now. Plus it seems less technical (not that I want something easier, just something that fits with me). Should I just consider learning drums anyway?I'm not the impatient type that expects to master it in two weeks, but two years is long enough to play stuff like AC/DC and basic stuff like that.@Caroline- I'm not going to stop on it yet, but I get what your saying. But rather than being gifted or not, I think its more of what you are comfortable with. Similar to visual learners vs. auditory learners, I think its a matter of technique (guitar) vs. rhythm (drums). But yeah, when I have trouble trying to get my sound and everything right, it tends to get frustrating. I went through that period after I learned the basics where I shot forward. The biggest step was getting better and finger placement and stuff like that. But once I got that down, it sort of bogged down until now I don't know where to go from here. more

Voting Question: too many AP classes? advice please!!?

okay i guess i should start off by saying that schedulings starting pretty soon and im not quite sure what to take for junior year. i thought i did, but then everyone started freaking out when they saw that there would be 6 AP's in my schedule. the classes i was planning on taking are AP English (Language and Composition) AP Psychology AP Computer Science French IV AP Calc BC AP Chemistry AP Physics Some more background info I guess would be that I'm going to be a junior next year. Currently, I'm an active member of the school's environmental club and the key club, play guitar, and I love to volunteer (although i have no hours that count yet. i have no clue how to get those.....) People at school see me as smart but in that "smart group", I'm probably somewhere in the middle to bottom. I also was planning on doing all this to save money on classes, they seem interesting, and because theyre just the next classes to take at my school (ap comp sci is after computer programming, ap chem after honors chem, ap phys after honors phys, etc). Now that my friends brought it up though, I'm getting somewhat worried that I'm basically getting ready to sacrifice my gpa or time. I'm also worried, however, that I might regret not taking one of these courses because they seem to go so in-depth and it's really interesting. For example, I HATED and was HORRIBLE at history or social studies before sophomore year. I'm taking APUSH now though and I surprised myself by finding it really interesting and I'm really glad I decided to take the class. I was worried at first that I would do just as bad as I did in 8th grade (where we also learned U.S. history) especially now that they'd tell you more information, but it's a lot of fun. I also thought that one way to lesson the pain of the AP's would be to start learning some of the material of at least 1 or 2 of the classes over summer. That way, I would know or get the gist of the material while learning it and it'd take off some of the stress overall. Now then. After reading all this (thank you for enduring through this by the way ^-^), what do you think? Should I go ahead and take all of these courses, or should I lay off on a few courses? Should I replace some of these courses with easier AP courses perhaps? What classes would you recommend? Should I bother trying to learn some material myself? If so, which classes should I start over the summer (self-study) and what companies/materials do you suggest for that class? (barron? kaplan? 5 steps to a 5? princeton review? etc?) any information at all would be VERY helpful as i'm super confused as to what to do ^-^' (information includes what colleges look at. one of my friends said that colleges first look at everyones gpa, throw out the ones that aren't high enough, and then look at the rigor of the class. another friend said that it's the opposite. who's right and who's wrong?) once again, I'm really sorry about the length -_-''' any helpful info would be great though and I thank everyone who answers thoughtfully ahead of time :) Thank you~!!!!! more

I'd like to learn guitar. The story is, I started with piano, but couldn't stand classical stuff. Moved to bass, but I love guitar solos, and would rather play them then play along with them. I've written 6 songs, and I can play them all on different instruments (guitar, bass, drums, piano, vocal etc.) just not all at the same time so I don't know how it sounds, but I want to know how to record them all, and maybe have them on sheet music. hi, i'm a big fan of kpop and jpop music and am hoping to become a singer (yes i know, sounds unlikely) but can't decide whether i should be a kpop or jpop singer (if i could be one). basically i found jpop first and their bands like SCANDAL and stereopony inspired me to learn bass guitar (which i'm currently learning). my friend introduced me to kpop and love the music but i haven't seen any bands which play bass (i listen to: snsd, f(x), wondergirls, 2ne1, 4minute, kara, etc., its probably because i haven't seen any rock bands). i also listen to buono, SCANDAL, stereopony, c-ute, mami kawada, nana suzuki, kotoko, etc. comparing bands i feel like kpop is more mature in a way i mean comparing buono to say BEG? see the difference. anyway i love both music. im hoping to become a singer and i know its hard and i'll have to work for it but im willing. basically if i choose jpop i can audition for sony music japan international audition, or kpop for jyp. i think it will easier with jpop because there is a singer called HIMEKA who has no asian in her but has debuted. and they except half-asians (crystal kay, leah dizon etc.), but i don't know any for kpop. i know they accept other asians but generally look for koreans. i know in the end it's my decision on what i prefer but what do you think, can u give me any tips or advice??also, with my voice i can't always reach really high notes which i know can be a problem, and when i do i can't sing very loud or my voice sounds strained.well i don't have a picture to show you but i have tan-like skintone (im half black-half white) and i have brown curly hair (tight corkscrew curls that get quite big). my eyes are brown but my eyelid is a hooded i think but definetly not single/double. my nose isn't pointy and is more wide than long and thin. my lips aren't very very small but they're not huge either. i have dark circles, actually the area around my eyes including the lids are all pretty much darker. i have chubby-ish cheeks and high cheekbones. height, i don't know think i'm 5 foot or 5 foot 2 lol sorry. im a uk 6-8 and i'm 12 years old. But, the girl HIMEKA is caucasian, has straight light brown hair,i decided to go for jpop, i may still audition for jyp to say i tried but i think jpop is abetter option for me thank you for your answers more

Voting Question: Is it ok that I don't keep beat while playing an instrument, like tapping my foot or anything?

I'm learning how to play the guitar through these lessons. And now that I've learned the E, A, and D chord, I've been practicing easy songs, like Wild Thing. The only thing that I'm wondering about is that because I already know the song pretty well because of its popularity, I don't really need to tap my foot or count out the beat. But I thought it's probably something I need to get into habit of doing, but when I do it, it screws me all up. Is this somehting I NEED to do if I'm going to play an instrument, or is it not that essential? And if it is, what's another way other than counting it out or tapping my foot, becuase that's not working out too swell. more

Voting Question: Electric Guitar: Should the Tuners be facing up or down?

I was watching you tube guitar lessons and I noticed Paul Gibson played with the tuners down but Satriani played with the tuners up. Both were playing right handed style (right on the picks, left on the frets). Which way is correct? Which person is playing a left handed guitar upside down and which one is playing a right handed guitar right side up? The reason I ask is because I'm going to buy my first guitar next payday. I'm ambidextrous but when I learn, I want to learn right-handed first on a right-handed electric guiter. I might learn left handed later on but I want to start off learning one way first to make the learning process easier. So do I get one that has the tuners facing up or facing down? more

Resolved Question: Will i be able to sell my Harp for a new one this way?

Ok...So i just rented an acoustic Camac Telenn Harp for 320 bucks. It's retail value is $3,000, but since i paid the 10% for rental i own it until mid-March. I thought it would be feasible to rent the instrument and learn it before i bought it. My dream Harp is the Camac Baby Blue Electroharp, which is $4,650. It's essentially an electric guitar-like Harp, and it can be strapped on and plugged into amps and synthesizers, which is why i want that instrument. I came up with this wacky idea: If i sell my Camac Harp for, say $5,500, i can use the remaining money to pay off the Harp, and then use any money left over to finance the Electro Harp. This way i get the Harp i want and i only have half of the money to pay off. The only flaw i find in here is i'll essentially be selling the Harp for twice the price. I'm not sure how else to word this, so please enlighten me on how this could work. I have the acoustic harp, which is legitimately brand new and in mint condition. However, if i sold it for nearly twice the price, i could pay it off, use the remaining money to finance the harp i want, and use any money left over to pay for a Harp teacher. If i don't do it this way, i'll have to have my parents pay for it for a few months in March, April, May, June, and July, until i can get a job to start paying the monthly payments. And even at that, i'll have to pay at least 300 a month until it's paid off by next summer. Wouldn't the 'easy way out' be to sell it for double the price, pay it off, and get the one i want, while getting a teacher at the same time? My parents have other priorities, and i really want to play this instrument, but because i don't have a job my experience is going to be hindered unless i do something to get around it. I obviously sound very inexperienced, desperate, and 'young' in this question. Just please let me know what i should do in this situation. Thanks more

I have been playing for six years. I had a teacher for 2 years and a break for two years and then him again for 2 years and now I am going to stop. I need guitar books or websites that can help me keep progressing at the rate that he had me going. I know all my modes- ionion, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aolian, and locrain. I know the majer 7, miner 7, dominant 7, and diminished arpeggios and when they r used. I know the diminished theory and what chords can be replaced with these. I know a little about the nine chords theory. (Don't know when they r used) I know a little about he seven chords theory. (don't know when they r used) I know my harmonic minor and how to use it. I know all five shapes of the pentatonic scale. I know all my keys. I know suspended chords. My level of soloing is pretty good. that comes the easiest for me in music. I only play by ear so I am a little better than those who don't. Thats about it. I want to learn more. I want to get way better. I want a book or website that teaches you some theory and gives you and exercise with that theory in it, such as a created solo, or song or any good exercise. I also want to learn more soling techniques like i am from my teacher. I want to learn everything there is to learn. What are some good books regardless of price. I don't mind if they are college textbooks that are used for people studying music theory. Btw. i want to learn to play every kind of style of music. more

Resolved Question: How can i find my musical voice?

I've never taken voice lessons, and I want to sing the lyrics to go along with the songs I create on guitar. I have a very deep voice naturally, but I can also reach a higher octave with some effort and it is prone to cracking and doesn't always sound in key. I would love to sing in both octaves all the time, but I'm having trouble finding some songs to practice singing with that I'm sure are actually helping me and not training me to be trying for something not in my reach. The two voices that I would ultimately like to most compare with, not emulate, would be Ben Gibbard from Death Cab, and Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. The way they use their voices almost as an extension of their guitar playing in their respective genre's has really helped inspire my own style that I'm currently trying to perfect. Really, I would love a nice list of songs from multiple tones that are easy to learn and great to practice with.
