Open Question: Help with Guitar Strumming!?

I've been teaching myself to play guitar and I am pretty good with chord switches. I know how to play two songs- Take it Easy by the Eagles and You Belong with me By Taylor Swift, but when I want to learn a new song, I can't figure out how to strum the guitar. the only way I know how to play the two above songs is because some one told me how to strum them (Ex: 1 2 3 & 4; up stroke on the &. This is the Eagles song.) I've tried very hard to listen to songs and try and figure out combinations of up and down strumming, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it. Any suggestions? more

Open Question: Need easy to intermediate guitar songs to rekindle interest in guitar?

So I'm taking the slow and arduous but fun journey of learning how to play guitar, and I'm going through the drills and exercises my instructor's given me, and I have the motivation and desire to learn, but that just starts winding down every time I pick up the tabs and notes I'm suppose to practice. Along with improving my technique, I want to be able to play some songs, but I can't find any that I personally like AND have the ability to play. I can tackle the major chords, power, pretty much anything that isn't incredibly complex, and quick catchy riffs like Daytripper's. Can anybody recommend me some modern rock songs (actual rock, not crappy pop) I can play? Bands I like are Billy Talent, Zebrahead, Audioslave, Minus the Bear, Cage the Elephant, etc. I don't mind a couple classics, but I'd like to keep it modern. more

Voting Question: Piano songs, and Advice for a beginner?

I've been playing around on my sisters keyboard for about 2 months now, and I'm really starting to get into it. I've started learning a few chords and I know the notes, you know C D E F G A B and stuff. I've started to learn a few song but some I get stuck and don't finish them, I taught myself play guitar fairly well so I have learned some of the songs I know on guitar onto the piano by ear but its just very simple stuff. I am really getting frustrated with not finishing a song, I have learned parts of "Fur Elise" and "The River Flows In You" but i haven't gotten far. I practice every day (I probably work harder at learning piano than I do with my school work), maybe I'm just getting to far ahead of myself? I don't want to learn super easy songs like "twinkle twinkle little star" or "mary had a little lamb" I want something more challenging but not to hard, Do you know any songs that would be good for me to learn? Also I don't know how to read music sheets and was wondering if that is something difficult to learn on your own (I bet if I could read them it would make things easier)? Also are there any websites that can help me with that? I Thank You in advance, and apreciate any advice that might help me be a better pianist more

I have just started to play the guitar. I'm still learning and i'm not much good yet but i figure all i need is practice. The problem is i need something to practice with. All the songs i know are for more advanced players since i just started playing like a month ago i need something easy that will help me become better. I personally don't care what type of song it is. I really just need some kind of song to practice with. I do like a lot of Taylor Swift, John Mayer, Jonas Brothers/ Nick Jonas, Jack Johnson songs. Voting Question: guitar, drums, piano, flute, and bass which is the easiest to hardest? in order please.?

i want to know because i have played flute in the 3rd and 4th grade and now i'm in the 10th grade it's okay and it not so easy but not so hard either. i might not keep on practicing on it. piano is difficult but i'm learning but i'll try to become an intermidiate the most my dad said to be an expert it takes years and years to master it not just 1 or 2. sorry not for me. bass tried might improved, drums easiest to improvise but still a beginner will improved to at least an intermidiate. guitar my life long passion.begginner i must admit i decided not to practice during freshman year and yeah i regretted that but now i'm gonna practice everyday at least 2 hours or so. i'll try to become an expert on that. also if i learn guitar than bass should be easy right? i'll practice guitar, drums and piano(once my brother gives me the copy of his piano book)every single day. also if i were able to read the sheet music for piano then drums and guitar should be easy right the thing is no sites tells me where to play the guitar on the sheet music and drums well yeah got that all i need are songs so piano is technically the easiest to play for songs since i know where to play well i will soon. how long will it take to master reading sheet music and yeah i know tabs are easier but in case if the songs are in sheet music i want to be able to play so how long? also got any songs on tabs for drums, guitar and piano or sheet music even? more

Voting Question: Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I popped 2 violin strings, and since i'm so bored, i decided to pick up my guitar. The first time that i tried to learn anything on it was about a month ago, when i tried to learn One by Metallica (just the intro, not the whole song) and I got so mad that i couldn't play anything that I grabbed that i learned on violin instead. Since that time i only practiced once, about 10 minutes and learned to play some scales, and today that i learned to play part of Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. I know that practicing so little is not really good, but do you think this is some sort of good progress for only three times that i've picked up my guitar? BTW, i did learn to play the intro of One, and about five minutes ago i learned to play the beginning of Pork and Beans by Weezer (super easy, i know, don't criticize). more

Resolved Question: How or when do you know that guitar isn't working for you?

Ok so basically I've been learning for about 2 years and as far as moving my fingers around and things like that I can do. But I can't play ANY songs all the way through and I just have a hard time getting the sound that I'm supposed to be getting when I'm trying to learn something. I can follow by tabs, but it never sounds like the song I'm trying to play. So what I want to know, is that saying that I'm just not "guitar minded"? I usually am a fast learner, and I expected guitar to take some time to learn. But two years later and its as if I just picked a guitar up. I would love to get better, but I just don't know what/how to learn and it just seems like its not the best fit. Learning drums also sounds fun, but I live in an apartment and that just wouldn't work right now. Plus it seems less technical (not that I want something easier, just something that fits with me). Should I just consider learning drums anyway?I'm not the impatient type that expects to master it in two weeks, but two years is long enough to play stuff like AC/DC and basic stuff like that.@Caroline- I'm not going to stop on it yet, but I get what your saying. But rather than being gifted or not, I think its more of what you are comfortable with. Similar to visual learners vs. auditory learners, I think its a matter of technique (guitar) vs. rhythm (drums). But yeah, when I have trouble trying to get my sound and everything right, it tends to get frustrating. I went through that period after I learned the basics where I shot forward. The biggest step was getting better and finger placement and stuff like that. But once I got that down, it sort of bogged down until now I don't know where to go from here. more

Voting Question: Easy song to play on guitar...?

Okay so me and my friends have a band, and we have been playin guitar for a while, but we havent taken lessons, we just used tabs and played for hours a day until we could hit notes and chords but sound good. So what i need is a good song thats fairly simple thats metal, like a metallica song, and me and my band need to learn it in 12 days, for a haiti relief local teen band fundraiser.we only need to learn one song, so please help, and ps. Resolved Question: Regarding learning styles (visual-spatial v. verbal-sequential)?

I realize that most, if not all people fall somewhere in the middle on the continuum, but do the 2 parts in each category necessarily always go together? I am what I would most appropriately call visual-verbal, and sorely deficient spatially and sequentially. Can this be? I understand it perfectly normal to be a bit of both (Visual-spatial AND verbal-sequential) but what of the disparity between each sub-category? Allow me to explain: -Can not perform simple arithmetic in my head. Jumble numbers, reverse signs, can never remember what to do with them... -FAILED Algebra I and Chemistry -ACED Geometry (it felt automatic) -LOVE Physics (self-taught due to the fact that my Algebra grades disallowed me to participate in Physics class in school. If my interest and level of understanding at present are any indication, I speculate I'd have done well in Physics class.) If I had my choice (regardless of prerequisite college algebra courses) I'd major in Physics, more specifically theoretical physics. -Never know what time it is. -Chronically disorganized/procrastinator -NEVER know which direction I'm going in; I'm easily lost -Love writing, reading, literature, and foreign languages (best subjects in school alongside Geometry.) -Good speller but only because I can picture the word in my head, and also the words above, below, or next to it on the paper I read it off of--not sequentially, as "normal" good-spellers usually do. -Love music -Self-taught piano, guitar, ukulele, banjo, and cello (can't read music, but can learn songs relatively quickly by ear) -I sing. - Love any sort of theory or concept, have trouble with detail (thereby learning things "backwards"--needing the whole concept in all its complexity laid in front of me first, then work down to minute details) -Can think in words and pictures. But I don't necessarily know the difference between thinking in word vs. a picture of a word. -But every memory I have is stored as a very descriptive picture. -I can memorize easily because I "see" the sentences the information came from in the textbook including where each sentence was on the page, the font, and the color, as well as any diagrams--but QUICKLY forget it after a test. I hate routine and rote-memorization, but I can do it. (the former is accepted much more reluctantly, however, if not rejected entirely...) Verbal-Visual, no? I can't help but think there is something wrong with me. Though, only because it'd be easier to swallow than to have to admit to myself that I'm actually just dumb. For the sake of my ego, I'm more comfortable with the former but have also resigned to averageness as the most befitting description of my intelligence level. However much I disdain mediocrity (more fear it, actually) I AM able to admit that I'm average-- I just hate it, and hate the fact that I hate it as well, as if it were something "bad" (which I know it is not...) Thoughts? Insight? No? Yes? Am I being melodramatic? Is this normal? Should I shut up now? ;) more
