I want an electric one, the acoustic does not much for me because I think it's way too shit for the amount I payed for it.. you dig me? I learn, in a way, fast.... like.. Voting Question: Should i learn guitar chords or skip it?

im learning the electric guitar its been my second day and i skipped learning chords ( g, c, d, etc) , i just learned guitar notes and started to practice songs like metallicas one, and smoke by the water by deep purple, and im wondering if i actually need to learn the chords, because my dad said if i ever wanted to play for an audience someday i would need to learn guitar chords. So should i learn the chords or just skip it and learn songs!? more

Voting Question: should i give up learning the electric guitar ?

i picked up a electric guitar. I learned how to get the metal sound with a distortion pedal. I learned how to tune the guitar in normal position "D" and down tuned "C". I am learning a lot of chords by heart the usual open chords and also all those power chords that are so often used in metal such as D5,B5 ect.. Yet i can't play guitar. My hand is not strong enough and i don't know how to make my left hand work correctly i mute strings that should not be mutted. It's frustrating. Lots of theory and little to no play at all. I know how to read music tabs too. I know there is a device available at music store especially to build strengh in the fingers I am inversting lots of money to do tuning on my guitar new bridge, new pots ect.. I would hate not actually learning the guitar. more

Resolved Question: WHY is it so hard for me to learn how to play guitar?

I have an electric guitar i got by someone because they didn't want it, it has a few minor electrical problems.....anywho My friend is pretty good on guitar and claims to have learned green days song "Time of your life" in 3 hours by teaching herself, and whenever she tries to teach me, i completely fail at it, i either can't get the strumming pattern down, or have a lot of trouble transitioning chords.... I was wondering if getting a professional teacher would be good, because i know a lot of people who just taught themselves and theyre really good. Maybe i just can't pick it up by myself? It's weird, i've tried to teach myself, but it's SO HARD!! Maybe i don't have the talent? Though i played Tenor Saxophone for 3 1/2 years and i was actually really good. But i reallllly want to learn to play guitar, any advice?I'm also 15, if that makes any difference more

Resolved Question: To the people who can play guitar I need your help!?

I know three Chords. A D E. I can play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by Tab...thats it. How do I progress? I cant afford lessons. I dont know what I am supposed to learn next. I cant read the more complicated Tabs and I find all the other Chords too difficult because my fingers will not reach yet..Any advice would be great. I have an electric guitar, and I want to learn to play so I can play my fave songs. Not planning on becoming a pro or joining a band. Any websites would be good. more

Voting Question: How can I get a Relient K-like tone?

I just got an electric guitar pretty recently, so I'm not very experienced with achieving a certain tone, and I'm trying to learn Relient K. Right now I only have a rather mediocre amp that came with my guitar (an Epiphone Les Paul Speciall II), but I'm looking to get a cable to hook up my guitar to my Mac and through to Garageband, where I'll have 5 amps and 10 stomp boxes to use. No matter what I do, my power chords sound too chunky and dark, and my distortion is too, well, distorted (fuzz, clipping, etc.). I'm more interested in their earlier tone (Think 5 Score and 7 Years Ago and Mmhmm).@Gar: The cable I'm getting is a 1/4" to USB cable that supposedly cleans the signal up a bit, not just a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, and eventually I think I'll get a more professional interface (might I add that I'm a teen and have a limited budget). Also, yes, I while get a better (though still small) amp for when I want to practice but not boot up my computer. more

Voting Question: Any Simple 4 cord songs to learn on guitar?

I can't really play guitar and for some reason I can't memorize the chords to learn it unless I put it with a song.. Any song that are no more than 5 cords I can learn on electric guitar. I heard "She f***in hates me" is an easy one. I'm not talking about nersery rhyme songs. lol. Extra love to ya if u can type the chords out:) more

Resolved Question: I'm teaching myself how to play the guitar and have a couple of questions?

I've learned the basic open chords-- A, D, E, C, G, Am, Dm, and Em... But I'm trying to look up some songs with these chords only so I can practice moving from chord to chord... But I can't figure out how to strum the guitar...I know that sounds silly, but this is what the song that I looked up looks like on the site.... C.............Am One day I slowly floated away C............. Am One day I slowly floated away C All the war horses wore rubber bands ......G to hide their hooves from sinking sand... I'm REALLY knew to the guitar so I don't understand when to strum, how many times, and all that....Can you explain it to me? And also, the guitar my father gave me to take to school is electric...Is it ok to practice acoustic songs on it? more

Voting Question: Rhythm guitar to bass guitar?

I play rhythm guitar and I was wondering if they are alike because they both keep rhythm? I already know the differences between rhythm and bass, (picking/plucking style, that rhythm plays chords but bass doesnt, etc.), but if I had experience with rhythm guitar would bass guitar be much more difficult? p.s. While playing guitar, I felt more comfortable plucking single notes in the background of songs instead of the strumming... this sounds silly but would this be a sign to play bass?? I have practiced to play bass on the 4 lowest strings of my electric guitar, does that help with learning bass?I never actually intended to become a lead guitarist which is why I pretty much played rhythm guitar...I have actually practiced playing bass (tabs) on the four lowest strings of my guitar more

Resolved Question: i would love to learn to play electric guitar, is it easy to learn?

I have been wanting to learn to play electric guitar since I was a little kid when I saw sign o the times by prince. I have been wanting to learn now that I can afford a guitar and learn to play. So my question would be is it easy to learn and read the chords and where can I go to learn to play???? more

Resolved Question: Can I learn to play rock with a classical guitar?

I know this question is very long, but I need some advice. My sister gave me an old classical guitar last month, and it's my first ever guitar. I was playing with my grandpa's Stratocaster, and I realized that the strings were a lot closer together than on my guitar. Is this good or bad? It felt really awkward transitioning to the Stratocaster and then switching back to my classical guitar. Really, I just want to learn to play because I know that in order to play any genre involving the guitar, you obviously have to know how play the instrument. But the genre I want to play isn't played with a classical guitar. My three favorite bands in order are Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Velvet Underground. I learned to play the intro of Under the Bridge, and I can almost play the whole thing without making any errors. I tried to learn the chorus of the song, and I can play it correctly, but the nylon strings don't manage to bring out the high pitch of the 12th, 13th, and 14th fret required to play the chorus of the song. Everlong and My Hero sound great on my guitar, while Smells Like Teen Spirit, Drain You, and School were just ok. But that may be because I'm not yet comfortable strumming power chords with a fast tempo. For School though, distortion is essential, so I'm not surprised by the awful sound. I try to go for the easier songs since I just started playing and I'm actually not that bad, but my guitar sometimes just doesn't sound that great with the songs I try to play. Go With the Flow sounds absolutely horrible (not the main riff but those really high notes) on my guitar. My mom might get me my beloved Fender 65 Mustang in about a year, but she wants me to have at least the basics mastered. So what do you think? When I get my electric guitar will it be easy transitioning to closer strings, or will it be nearly impossible? I find strumming power chords quite difficult, and I'm pretty sure it's just my lack of skills, but it could be because of the more separated strings on my guitar. If you know anything about this, please include it in the answer as well. I'm 16, so by myth I should be able to learn faster than an adult. I heard that classical guitars are more difficult to play, so will that make an electric guitar easier to play once I get one? I used to play basketball, and my coach used to have us pass medicine balls to each other to make passing a regular ball easier. Does the same theory apply to guitars? Thanks for reading this insanely long question (if you did). more

Resolved Question: How can I teach myself guitar?

I have the guitars, (one electric, one acoustic-electric, one bass) some wicked cool amps, all the equipment, lots of books, and an internet connection. Now all I need to do is learn. What I need from you guys is someone who can give me an idea of how I should learn. I want to get faster and improve my technique, but I also want to have fun learning some cool riffs. Should I start out memorizing chords, riffs, scales? Where should I start? How much should I do of what? more

Resolved Question: How do you read guitar tabs?

I just got a guitar yesterday I've had no previous experience with music, I got an Epiphone PR-4E Steel string Electric/Acoustic I watched the DVD and learned 3 major chords E, A, and D after that I thought chords were pretty boring and everytime I play A major my guitar buzzes. I tried searching up some tabs and I could play the first bit of Coheed and Cambria's Wake Up but when it got to the hammer on bit I just gave up and got frustrated can someone tell me how to do a hammer on and pull of in playing the song. Here's the tab CAPO IV Standard Tuning Intro/Verse- "I'm gonna ride this plane..." "I'll do anything for you..." "So leave yourself intact..." e----------------------------------------------| b------3--------------3------------------------| g---------0--------------0-----------0---------| d------------0--------------0----------0-------| a---3--------------3-------------2h5-----2-----| e----------------------------------------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b---2-------2p0---------------------------------| g-----0-----------------------------------------| d-------0---------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e-----------------------------------------------| Chorus- "The morning will come..." e-----------------------------------------------| b-------------------------3---3---3-3p0---------| g---------0---------0---------------------------| d-------0---------0-----------------------------| a-----2---------2-------------------------------| e---3---------3---------0---0---0---------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-----5---5---5---5p4-----4---4---4---4---------| g-----------------------------------------------| d-----------------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e---5---5---5---5-------5---5---5---5-----------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-------------------------3---3---3-3p0---------| g---------0---------0---------------------------| d-------0---------0-----------------------------| a-----2---------2-------------------------------| e---3---------3---------0---0---0---------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-----5---5---5---5p4-----4---------------------| g-----------------------------------------------| d-----------------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e---5---5---5---5-------5-----------------------| I also found it really hard to stretch from fret 2 to fret 5 for the hammer on.I've learnt simple chord progressions I can go from E minor to G major and E major to A minor. The problem I'm really having is the buzzing it seems to be coming from the bridge this happens when I usually play chords but minimal buzz happens when I play an open string. I also got the first bit of Wake Up ok, I just don'r know how to do a pull off, I can hammer on from fret 2 to 5 now. How do you do a pull off in these examples; 2p0 or 4p5? I also need help with tuning when I try to play along to a song, it just doesnt sound right I have an electronic tuner but I'm thinking of getting a chromatic one. Should I take my guitar to a guitar tech to see what's causing the buzzing? more

Resolved Question: is the learning process for acoustic guitar the same as electric?

i know it sounds really stupid, but i've been playing acoustic guitar and i was wondering if all the chords are the same and if the transition will be difficult. more

Voting Question: question for those who started on electric guitar?

so i recently began to learn how to play guitar, but it seems like acoustic would have been a better choice, because it also seems like chords ring more clearly on them, and i would be more sure if i was right or not as far as how the chords actually sound. i wanna play a lot of acoustic songs, it seems like it would be great for learning. right now the only thing i see myself learning is how to play guitar tablature, and id be missing out on chords (i am practicing them, but i cant practice on actual songs it seems like because they dont ring like an acoustic would, so as a result im always speculating if it should sound like this or that) where am i going wrong? sorry if some of this doesnt sound accurate but i guess im just asking where i should start from and where i should lead into when starting from an electric guitar?val i dont understand your answer... it seems as if everything ive gone to, including the book im reading on how to play guitar says learning other peoples songs is a great way to learn. i also share that opinion with you on being "stereotypical", but obviously you build from the basics and up. for instance being able to play power chords, pull offs, hammer ons... all come with practice, and from playing other peoples music. i mean i cant just start making things up on my own right off the bat, i need to practice how to move up and down the fret board cleanly while doing these things right? what better way then through other peoples music? what im asking is where did you start from an electric guitar, through chords, tabs, or what? chords seem more geared towards an acoustic guitar, but i could be wrong. at the same time chords are sometimes deemed "essential". and if i wanna learn through other peoples music, that would be correct. but with an electric, it seems different?and not everybody learns through lessons, i know plenty who have learned themselves. i am a quick learner, but i have a lot of questions. but thanks for the input! more

Resolved Question: Best (affordable) electric guitar to buy?

I'm pretty much a begginer, although I have been playing acoustic for a few months and have learned all the chords, a few songs and are pretty good at scales now. My price range is £230, not much I know. I like playing everything really from John Mayer to Metallica to AC/DC to Three Days Grace. more

Resolved Question: I want to learn how to play the guitar by myself? (no teacher) acoustic or electric?

i've never played and i love teh sound of electrics but don't you need an amp and aren't they a lot more expensive? do they use sheet music or do guitarists just figure out the notes themselves? i play the violin and always use sheet music. what is a tab and a chord? i hear this a lot when ppl are talking about guitars. plz help me!! more

Voting Question: is acoustic guitar the same as electric ?

soo, i know how to play acoustic guitar, and i was wondering if it is the same as electric. like, do they have the same chords and tabs ? how are the two types different ? since i know how to play acoustic, would that make it easier for me to learn how to play electric ? more

Resolved Question: Open Major Chord Help?

So I'm learning how to play electric guitar and I have this book which I'm practicing major open chords off of. I'm learning E A D G chords, and for G it says: e|3 B|3 G|0 D|0 A|2 E|3 But I have an ipod chord app and that says its: e|3 B|0 G|0 D|0 A|2 E|3 Which one is right? Also in the book it says the D chord is played with the 6th string muted only, but the ipod app says you mute the 6th AND the 5th. Or does it not really matter? more

Resolved Question: Do pianos really have no soul?

Sorry if I offend anyone but I personally think piano is one of the most souless instruments out there. There is so little contact between the person and the intrument. I just dislike the sound of the instrument. You can't vibrato the notes. You can't bend the notes. These really gives a piece of music much more emotion in my opinion. You can't use harmonics either. I know some very talented people out there. One girl I know is an excellent pianist. She said that she hated the sound of the instrument. She wants to start playing guitar instead. Two other people I know said the same thing. Some might say that electric guitars have no soul because it uses technology and machines. However, don't pianos use technology too? Electric guitars can do many things that pianos can't do. I can only think of two things that pianos can do that guitars (electric or acoustic) can't do. Pianos can play chords and melody at the same time, and Pianos have a wider range of notes they can play. So is it just me, or do pianos have no soul? Hey, if you are offended, feel free to recommend some piano music to me. Also, feel free to argue. I really want to learn to appreciate piano music.Wow thats a pretty nice sounding solo. I really like Keith Moon's solos. They are amazing. That's a really ingenius interpretation of Stairway to Heaven. I've actually seen that video before. I never favorited it, but now I will. I'll favorite the drum solo too more

Resolved Question: How to Write a Song with a Guitar?

Ok, So I play Guitar and Drums DAILY!. I love to play it's my passion and I have had a natural talent at it. Also, I love to write songs (Country, Rock, Blues) I write them hearing the guitar and drums behind the words and the melody just flows a little lead guitar and its full throttle in my head, however, my big problem is trying to play the guitar to the songs I write. I can never find the right chords or sounds.. So I have tried many times writing songs with my guitar, however I just cannot seem to make it sound the way I want (I am using Acoustic, though I have used my Electric hoping for a chance that it would help). My problem is I cannot seem to express my music on the guitar nor Can I seem to write the songs when I am playing the guitar.. I thought I was limited on chords so I went to youtube and learned new chords and lead licks, I went to guitar shops and bought books on how to play various chords, I have a poster with about 100 different guitar chords on it. I have learned'em all now, I have them down really good, however I still am stumped and cannot seem to pickup on it nor can I solve the problem. So I know it now isn't a lack of knowing chords, it's just some kind of mental block or something. It really sucks because I have made tons of Guitar rhythms using an electric guitar than used my Boss BR-8 to add in my own drums and bass guitar as well as lead, and it always seems to come out awesome, I just can never seem to pick up on writing music with the guitar or getting words to my melodies.. I am looking for any and every suggestion possible. I seriously have been working on this since I was a freshman in High School in 2005, I am graduated and 19 years old and still cannot figure it out.. ALSO, I took ALL the music classes at my High School (4 years worth) from guitar through Bass and Percussion, I also took the History Of American Music (HAM) and Chorus And Band classes as well. So I have a well known knowledge of Music but for some reason this has been bothering me for sometime now!. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks! more

Voting Question: How should I learn the electric guitar?

I've been putting off learning for a year until now. I'm into bands such as Lamb of God, Atreyu, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains etc. (Not just metal, all types of rock really like Nirvana or something). I wanna know a good route of learning the guitar, chords, scales and songs etc. I've got an Ltd-f10, (guitar bundle), it has a pretty crap amplifier as you might expect, so I won't be able to get effects as it's a very basic amp. Treble, Middle, Bass. Any help would be awesome:) more

Resolved Question: Never Played Guitar, Where Do I Start?

Resolved Question: Guitarists! Good online resources for learning Delta Blues on guitar?

I've really gotten into the sounds like Blind Willie McTell and Son House and I want to be able to play like them. So far, I've learned to play the standard blues progressions and solo over them in the blues scales pretty well, but it sounds a lot more like Blues-Rock or "Electric Blues". The basic "text-book" blues stuff is so straightforward (12 bars, blues-scales, occasionally departing from blues-scales to resolve on chord-notes, etc), but it sounds nothing like the down-home feel. I want to add a folksy finger-picking, slide element to my blues. Where to start? more

Resolved Question: So I'm going to be learning to play guitar... What books/accessories should I get?

I will be buying myself an Acoustic-Electric Guitar in the following month or so if finances allow. I am a beginner guitarist, but not a beginner musician. I would also like to purchase a song book or two with some stuff that will keep me interested in the long run. I like most kinds of music. Fingerings for the notes and learning chords will be the main focus as I have been able to read music since I was 9 years old.. Also any other accessories that would make it easier to learn and care for the guitar would be nice to know aboutI'm not really feeling the need for actually getting lessons with a teacher that I would deal with personally. Not to mention there is that money issue...Also I had no trouble understanding the book my sister got her nieces when they got their guitars for Christmas. more

Voting Question: learning guitar, feeling lost .. not sure what to do now ..?

Resolved Question: Chords on a FirstAct ME301?

I bought a FirstAct ME301 electric guitar a few years ago when I wanted to learn to play, but I've never actually used the thing until recently. I can't seem to get the chords to sound right on it at all. Is there anything I can do about this or is this a fault of the guitar? more

Resolved Question: ultra cheap guitars - are they worth it?

First off: I have no intention of becoming a serious guitarist. My experience "playing" the keyboard has taught me I'm far too lazy and I know I'd never match up to a real musician so I'm not even going to try. What I would like to do is buy a cheap electric guitar just to play around with, learn a few chords and such. I'll probably get bored of it within a month but that being said I don't want to spend my money on complete junk. My question, therefore, is should I spend £40 on this: http://www.johnnybrook.com/product.aspx?… Would it stand up to casual use from an absolute novice? Would new strings and maybe new pick-ups render it a decent guitar should I ever become more serious about playing? Or, given my crappy attitude, should I not bother buying a guitar at all? If your advice is going to be "you need to spend more on a guitar" then I'll understand, but I won't bother. (too much of a gamble) Many thanks in advance.** The link is messed up, it should be: http://www.johnnybrook.com/product.aspx?prod=jb006 **@ t.lauenborg Yes, food for thought indeed. I suppose I should hold off on the guitar until I can afford a real guitar and not feel too guilty if I can't learn to play it. Everything you've said sounds spot on. more

Voting Question: what are new easy electric guitar songs?

whats an easy electric guitar song i could learn? i like newer more popular bands, all time low, paramore, ke$ha,avril lavigne, just newer stuff. I DONT CARE IF YOU DONT LIKE THESE BANDS, I DO. the only chords i know are, g, d em, e, c, a, am, cadd 9, and i think thats it. Resolved Question: Cheap electric guitar for a beginner?

I'm a beginner at playing the guitar. I've had a few acoustic guitar lessons but I really can't play it and i'm more interested in playing the electric guitar. The problem is my parents can't afford electric guitar lessons. I don't need them I can learn from the internet but what I wanted to know was the best guitar possible for a beginner that feels really comfortable and has really good distortion and gives a very good rock/metal sound. I have also borrowed an electric guitar from my teacher but it's really old and the distortion doesn't work on the amplifier. I actually need a guitar more for playing fast (learning to shred) then chords. I also need a good amplifier. What are good guitars and amplifiers for a beginner with good distortion/metalrocksound AND cheap. more

Resolved Question: Help with Guitar Questions?

Resolved Question: Any recommendations on songs to learn on guitar?

I'm sick of just learning power chord songs. I'm an intermediate guitar player (electric) and I like songs like Crazy Train and Carry On My Wayward Son which have power chords & parts with single notes. I don't care who it's by, when it came out, what musical genre, or anything. Except I'd really prefer it be in Standard Tuning or Drop D! Thx so much! more

Resolved Question: Acoustic and Electric guitar help!?

In school I really want to be in band and play the electric guitar.I already am taking acoustic guitar lessons. Do you think it would be confusing if I took lessons for both at the same time with different teachers? In my acoustic guitar lessons I haven't learned the notes yet just the chords and how to play, but not the actual notes. In band, the 1st thing they do is teach you notes. So would that be a waste of money if I took both? And would it confuse me? What do you think would be best? Thanks so much! If you need more info just ask! more
