Resolved Question: How do I get started REALLY playing the guitar?

I got my first guitar for my 8th birthday, and i'm 18 now. I have been playing it since then but all I do is look up tabs to songs I like and play off that. Getting them down pretty good isn't that hard for me, and I think that i'm experienced enough to take it to the next level. My friend whose a few months younger than me can play circles around me. He can sit there for hours and just make up the best sounding blues you could think of. He is in a band that is actually starting to take off pretty big right now. One of my other friends, his dad can do the same thing. I would love to be able to sit down and jam with them like I do, but not feel inadequate. How can I keep up with someone who knows his scales, knows his way around the guitar and can put his soul into his music? The trouble is that I don't know where to start. Music lessons are way too expensive and most of the time not worth it, and i'm not sure how to use the internet to find these things out for free. Do I start by learning scales? All of the scales? Until I can do them in my sleep? Do I just start messing around with my guitar until something that sounds good comes out? Can someone please help me? more

Resolved Question: What's a good way to casually learn to play the guitar?

I took guitar lessons years ago, but back then I was more interested in learning individual songs than actual theory, which I now regret. I have a little (not much, but a little) free time on my hands now, and I can find tabs on the internet and memorize them, but I'd like to go beyond that and maybe pick up a little music theory so I can understand what I'm playing and maybe play some things that haven't been written out note for note. I don't have the money or time for lessons, but I have the internet and a decent acoustic guitar, and I can probably stand to buy a music book or two if anyone has any good ones to recommend. So, any suggestions on where to start? more

I've been playing guitar for almost three years and I have a strong grasp of music. I've been playing piano recently, but I'm not familiar with what pieces of music I should be looking at. For the most part, I've been learning techniques and coordination by playing Disney songs (A Whole New World), and simple rock/alternative songs (Mad World, How to Save a Life, Coldplay, etc), but they can be a bit fluffy. What songs should I learn that other piano players have used to learn piano? I'm willing to learn any and all things, and would like to learn some classical pieces. Also is there a good place for free sheet music online, similar to how there are for tabs for guitar? more

well ive been playing guitar for probably about a year now but i really got into it probably about 6 months ago. Anyways, so i have one of those starter packs (fender starcaster). So i can read tabs, i know some major chords, i can play songs like dear maria count me in, dirty little secret, decode etc (i like alternative music) well now, i dont know where to go. Im not taking lessons nor do i plan on taking lessons and those online video lessons are my last resort. What should i do? I kinda wanna learn how to do those improv solos and blues and stuff. I'm learning how to play acoustic guitar and I can sortof read tab and notes. Problem is I can only read the letters and not the stick things. Resolved Question: Ideas for jazzy christmas songs to play at senior home?

My friend and I both love music, and we decided to play some gigs at Old Folks' Homes in our town. The shows will probably be in early December. We've played gigs before, but never at a place like a seniors home. Also, it's near Christmas, so we have to learn some cool holiday material that will be both fun to play and good for the seniors to listen to. My friend plays guitar. He specializes in shredding and 80's style heir and arena metal, but he can play other styles very well too. I play jazz piano, and am studying classical music. We both love to compose and arrange. These old folks will probably like jazz and traditional carols. I already wrote jazzy arrangements for Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and O Tannebaum (O' christmas tree), as well as a funky latin fusion thing that has melodies from Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Silver Bells woven into it. My friend knows some old-time christmas tunes on both guitar and cello, although he'd probably prefer to do the jazz. Does anybody know of any fun jazz arrangements of christmas songs? I can't sight read, because I am visually impaired and I play by ear. Both my friend and I can read guitar tab, and we both know music theory. Feel free to just leave chord progressions to cool christmas tunes. more

Resolved Question: Learning the piano........?

Basically I've been wanting to learn the Piano for some time and I recently obtained a Keyboard for free and I guess now's a good time? I'm not exactly new to instruments I already play Guitar and Bass but I pretty sure that won't help me, right? Anyways, one to my main questions. I could use a keyboard to learn right? I mean, I know I could get the basic feel but I would like to learn a song or so before going after a real piano to see if I like it or not. The keyboard has 35 white keys and 25 black ones. Another Question I have is how hard is it? I mean I know it's not going to be easy but like it's not impossible right? I don't have alot of money to spare to take lessons and I would be just trying to scrape the basics I would need to know off the internet... Would this be ok? And I guess the last one is does anyone know a good site I could learn off of for free? Like looks for tabs (Is it called tabs like for guitars or is it sheet music?) and lessons. Hello, I've been playing guitar for about a year and a half, and I love it! The only problem I have is I can't lug around my big electric guitar everywhere to play when I have some free time on the road or at my Grandma's house or whatever. I recently took interest in Mandolins and admire their small stature and bright sound. I figure bringing a Mandolin along with me places wouldn't be as much of a hassle and it wouldn't weigh me down to much if I wore it with a strap. My concern is, my main musical interest lies in Beatles tunes, and Mandolin tab is really hard to find online. Can guitar tab somehow be transferred to Mandolin, or would I have to come up with all new tab? Is the Mandolin very different from the guitar? And lastly, is it worth it for me to buy a Mandolin? Resolved Question: Can someone tell me where I can find online instructions to learn to play the DULCIMER?

I just purchased a mountain dulcimer. I really don't know anything about it but I fell in love when I heard it played on a music award show (Cindy Lauper!) and I got a 4 string Folkcraft all dark walnut model, made in the 60's so I hope it will have a nice seasoned sound. Is there anything anyone can tell me about it to help me get started? I play the autoharp and can read music having learned piano, but the guitar was always my first love....but I wasn't allowed that...wah...but I do love the autoharp but find it a little limited. I really cant wait to get going on the dulcimer. What I'm looking for is: 1) Online how to play book or manual or site. 2) Music tabs for the dulcimer free online songs. 3) Any free instructional sites with videos. Any info is appreciated. I play the guitar, and i've been using tabs to learn songs. however, they can be very unreliable and incorrect much of the time, and so i have decided to use proper sheet music to learn from. Hey hello, I used to play guitar (i'm 16). i played guitar for a few weeks, played things like, nothing else matters, the soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean and some other easy to play things. before i started playing serious i somehow got dragged away from playing guitar.. I haven't played for like 1 year now and my guitar is still in good condition etc, don't worry about that :) I'm just wondering, as i really wanna start playing again but with good intentions and hopefully i'll become good one day. Are there any Guitar-beginners guides or something for FREE on the web? which give me aid with both basics, medium hard and hard things? I currently play saxophone, percussion, clarinet and keyboard... Im thinking of taking up bass guitar in my free time so I can get with some of my buddies and jam out with them. I would like to know if I pick up a bass guitar if it would be easy to teach myself with method books and online stuff. If push comes to shove I would probably get a few private lessons. I can read notes and rhythms... Im guessing the only thing that will be new to me is learning the notes on the guitar and finger positions... I do now what to play tabs though, I want to read notes. Resolved Question: What's a good way to learn the guitar for free?

I've been playing since late '08 pretty much just learning some simple riffs and parts of basic solos from tabs. I feel like I've hardly progressed at all. I haven't even learned a full song yet, just feel like I'm going nowhere. I'm on the verge of giving up for good, but I've always really wanted to learn. I just have no idea how to start. Just learning riffs from tabs doesn't seem to help. I can never find a clear answer on how I can learn and actually see some progression. Some suggestions on sites, or anything would be much appreciated. Also, would it be good to learn actual notes instead of using tabs? I got this copy of a program from a friend, but I don't like it since it's based around actual notes. It has tabs and all under the notes, but I feel like I'm at a huge disadvantage if I don't learn the notes since they show timing and everything--can't tell that with tabs. Resolved Question: How can I break my laziness?

Alright, here's the deal. When I grew up, I played video games during every moment of free time I had. This lasted up through when I was 18. I really think as a result of that, I learned how to be lazy during my free time now, even though I ditched video games long ago and never play them at all, ever. But instead, I sit on my computer listening to all my music, checking Facebook (even when I've got nothing new to look at on there). If not Facebook, I'm on youtube looking up all sorts of videos. Sometimes I'll play my bass guitar, in which case a lot of times I go on my computer again to look up tabs that I can't figure out on my own. Right now I'm on Spring Break, stuck at school. I have a ton of homework to do, but I procrastinate constantly. I could go to the gym, start actually researching grad schools and internships, or something else, but I'm a waste. I stay up doing my computer/music routine til 7 or 8am, even if I worked all day and should be tired, and I sleep til about 3 in the afternoon, only to start up the same wasteful routine again. Even on days I have classes, I sleep in until the hour before class, even if my first one is at 2pm. I watch people like Bear Grylls and feel like crap. He's pretty much everything man was supposed to be; out in the wild, just surviving. But even just looking around on campus it seems everyone's got something they're good at that's impressive, from anything like skateboarding to lifting to an impressive internship and scholarship. Then I look at me and wonder what the hell happened. I mean, I play bass, but I'm just a novice, and I suck at meeting people, so I couldn't form a band ever. Plus, nobody respects a bassist. So what can I do? I feel like it's a lost cause unless someone is with me everywhere I go, forcing me out of my habitual lack of activity and importance. I need a personal boot camp instructor or something. more
