Resolved Question: How do I get started REALLY playing the guitar?

I got my first guitar for my 8th birthday, and i'm 18 now. I have been playing it since then but all I do is look up tabs to songs I like and play off that. Getting them down pretty good isn't that hard for me, and I think that i'm experienced enough to take it to the next level. My friend whose a few months younger than me can play circles around me. He can sit there for hours and just make up the best sounding blues you could think of. He is in a band that is actually starting to take off pretty big right now. One of my other friends, his dad can do the same thing. I would love to be able to sit down and jam with them like I do, but not feel inadequate. How can I keep up with someone who knows his scales, knows his way around the guitar and can put his soul into his music? The trouble is that I don't know where to start. Music lessons are way too expensive and most of the time not worth it, and i'm not sure how to use the internet to find these things out for free. Do I start by learning scales? All of the scales? Until I can do them in my sleep? Do I just start messing around with my guitar until something that sounds good comes out? Can someone please help me? more

I took guitar lessons years ago, but back then I was more interested in learning individual songs than actual theory, which I now regret. I have a little (not much, but a little) free time on my hands now, and I can find tabs on the internet and memorize them, but I'd like to go beyond that and maybe pick up a little music theory so I can understand what I'm playing and maybe play some things that haven't been written out note for note. I don't have the money or time for lessons, but I have the internet and a decent acoustic guitar, and I can probably stand to buy a music book or two if anyone has any good ones to recommend. So, any suggestions on where to start? more

Resolved Question: Learning guitar and dont know where to go next?

well ive been playing guitar for probably about a year now but i really got into it probably about 6 months ago. Anyways, so i have one of those starter packs (fender starcaster). So i can read tabs, i know some major chords, i can play songs like dear maria count me in, dirty little secret, decode etc (i like alternative music) well now, i dont know where to go. Im not taking lessons nor do i plan on taking lessons and those online video lessons are my last resort. What should i do? I kinda wanna learn how to do those improv solos and blues and stuff. If you have any tips, please feel free to tell more

does anyone know where I can find free, printable, online music theory worksheets for guitar? I am learning to play, I can read tabs, but I just don't have the time for lessons. Resolved Question: Learning the piano........?

Basically I've been wanting to learn the Piano for some time and I recently obtained a Keyboard for free and I guess now's a good time? I'm not exactly new to instruments I already play Guitar and Bass but I pretty sure that won't help me, right? Anyways, one to my main questions. I could use a keyboard to learn right? I mean, I know I could get the basic feel but I would like to learn a song or so before going after a real piano to see if I like it or not. The keyboard has 35 white keys and 25 black ones. Another Question I have is how hard is it? I mean I know it's not going to be easy but like it's not impossible right? I don't have alot of money to spare to take lessons and I would be just trying to scrape the basics I would need to know off the internet... Would this be ok? And I guess the last one is does anyone know a good site I could learn off of for free? Like looks for tabs (Is it called tabs like for guitars or is it sheet music?) and lessons. Hey hello, I used to play guitar (i'm 16). i played guitar for a few weeks, played things like, nothing else matters, the soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean and some other easy to play things. before i started playing serious i somehow got dragged away from playing guitar.. I haven't played for like 1 year now and my guitar is still in good condition etc, don't worry about that :) I'm just wondering, as i really wanna start playing again but with good intentions and hopefully i'll become good one day. Are there any Guitar-beginners guides or something for FREE on the web? which give me aid with both basics, medium hard and hard things? What is preferable, Taking lessons or using internet (i never had lessons, learned what i got from myself) Where can i find information about how to play tabs etc? that's about it, any other tips are very much appreciated! Resolved Question: I learning Bass Guitar simple?

I currently play saxophone, percussion, clarinet and keyboard... Im thinking of taking up bass guitar in my free time so I can get with some of my buddies and jam out with them. I would like to know if I pick up a bass guitar if it would be easy to teach myself with method books and online stuff. If push comes to shove I would probably get a few private lessons. I can read notes and rhythms... Im guessing the only thing that will be new to me is learning the notes on the guitar and finger positions... I do now what to play tabs though, I want to read notes. How easy is this? (learning bass guitar) I have no interest in slap bass btw. I don't know if those are two different instruments to even begin with. : ) All the help will be great! Thanks! more

I have a ESP f-100 series. I am not that good at the guitar. I dont take lessons and cant. But i want to learn and become good at the guitar for free. I wont to learn screamo and heavy metal type stuff. And dont just say "read tabs," because for some reason, all screamo havy metal songs are very hard on the guitar. Resolved Question: How long does it take to learn to play the guitar?

I know it depends on how much time you practise etc. I have just started having guitar lessons; I understand tab and know what the different strings are and am learning a few chords. However, I am gettting a bit confused in the group lessons as the teacher is giving us more information than I think we need at this stage (pentatonic scales in week 4 for example). I think I need to be regrounded and wondered if I practice a few chords regularly for half an hour a day, how long would it take me to be able to get a grip of it all? Any other help would be most valued - I have found guitar tab websites but would be interested in any other free recommended ' teach yourself websites.' Thanks! more

I've been playing guitar for about 1 1/2- 2 yrs now, and im kinda "stuck" right now. I'm not really learning anything new, and I haven't improved in my playing even tho I play often. Ive been using free guitar websites mostly to learn cords and scales, along with guitar tabs for a handful of songs. so I guess what I need is, does anyone know of any GOOD sources to improving, either in online lesson, or something I can order (maybe a hands-on dvd set?). I dont really want to take 1 on 1 lessons, as I want the freedom to play when I want to rather then a given time, and also I dont want to spend a whole heck of a lot doing it, as its just a hobby and im not in a band or anything. Hey, I'm looking for free beginner guitar lessons online as I haven't found a good instructor. Till now, I've only come across garbage lessons that doesn't fit a real beginner. i've been playing the acoustic guitar for about 4 years on and off. i've never had proper lessons, and im afraid that's going to screw me up. i dont really try to get better, its more like i look up tabs for songs i like and i play them. from there i try to get better. but recently i feel like playing some solos but theyre hard. im not tring to make my own music or anything since i know im not ready yet, but i have the tabs in front of me and theyre still hard to play. is it mostly because im on an acoustic? i mean i dunno all the bends, hammers and slides get tough, but it shoudlnt slow me down that much. and picking is kinda slow. im trying to learn free bird as of now. im not really a "beginner" but any help at all would be appreciated. thanks. more
