I'm a lead/rhythm guitarist in a metal band, and I want to take things slow and easy back downward to soft songs. I've borrowed my friend's unused Classical guitar, learned Romance De Amor, or something, i forgot the name, but the only songs I could play are metal songs on the classical guitar, although I did study the finger plucking with it, and I seem to be good at it. Now, If i were to buy a wooden guitar, should I get a steel string or a nylon string? Is the steel string also good for finger/spanish music? Is the classical guitar also good for acoustic metal songs? Although, I heard that you could play good solo-type songs on the acoustic guitar... true? What song should i choose to learn on guitar. It should be a good one, probably clean/acoustic in parts. I don't know when Ill get an amp. I am a beginner, I have been playing for almost 3 months at school and trying other things by myself at home. I have tried the very beginnings of some songs like One by Metallica, Fade To Black by Metallica, The Day That Never Comes by Metallica, Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones, and thats about all that I have been pretty successful with. Only the very beginnings though. I also played the chords for Comfortably Numb and probably got like 85% when playing with the song. I still cannot switch fingers very fast, but if I learn a song I could practice doing it in that song. Please suggestions. Not any older than 1975 please. You could suggest trying the songs i have tried the beginning too. more

Open Question: I need some electric guitar playing tips from expert players, please help me?

Ok, im not a beginnier or a newbie, but im about intermediate. I play thrash metal, speed metal or just basic heavy metal riffs. Ive been playing guitar for about a year now. Acoustic guitar since march 09, but electric only for about 7-8 weeks. And im pretty good, just i need some tips to perfect my playing. My main problem is too much pick up sound, its not that its to sensitive, i dont think, its just ive been noticing, when my finger leaves a fret, i get the open string sound, so if im playing a fast and complex song, it sometimes sounds like a load of noise because when im trying to play the tabs for the songs, theres other noise coming from the pick ups. I know theres a technique that can help me solve this. Im practicing 1-2 hours a day. Minimum i play a day is 30 mins. Please dont tell me to learn palm muting, ive learn that, thats a pretty simple skill although it maybe similar to the technique i need to learn to stop the sound coming from the string. imagine this. Im playing a song, and when i play a note, it normally sounds fine, but when im playing a song, and one of the frets i use is on a higher string,when i play the note, and my finger comes of the string, it makes a noise as if i was performing a pull-off. How do i stop this? Its not that much of a problem if im playing quite a few notes on the same string, but on some of the songs i play, if i play a fret on a higher string, and go back down to the lower stings, i obviously take my finger off the fret on the higher sting, but it makes a pull off noise. Im sorry, im rambling and your probably like... wah, um ok. But im sure the experts will be able to give me some advice. thanks for reading. more

Hey, I JUST started guitar, a week and a half ago. I have an acoustic guitar, a Jasmine. is that brand good? my guitar strings are somewhat rusted and VERY hard to push which kinda sucks, but i researched it and i think i just need new strings if that doesn't work i will get my truss rod checked out. so far I have learned knocking on heavens door and am learning hurt by johnny cash. I also play a twelve string for better sound on knocking on heavens door, but hurt is harder on a twelve string, therefor need to replace the strings on the 6 strings, is there any tips i can get on how to take care of it? or some real easy songs on acoustic to learn after hurt? and any suggestions on the string gauge? will light be too much of an annoying sound? or will it still sound good enough to play? more

I am looking for a new bass amp but I'm a bit confused. I started playing a bit ago and have started playing lots of Metallica(favorite band). The problem with my amp is, it is just a 15W Acoustic amp that I got for cheap just to learn on. im not talking like smoke on the water easy, i play like intermediate stuff like some of the easier atreyu and bullet for my valentine songs.ive been playing for 2 years, so im not a super amazing guitar god yet. i have to learn a full song (which is hard cuz i dont remember lots of stuff well, but i can do it). i usually have my guitar drop-tuned and a droptuned song would probably sound more impressive but it doesnt have to be. and nothing with a solo, i cant so most solos. i gotta learn to play the whole thing through and sound almost as good as the band that plays it. if i can do this my dad will help me pay for my new guitar which i reallly need cuz my electric one is a peice of crap (my acoustic isnt, but i cant play in a band with that =P). please suggest some songs you think i should learn??? more

Resolved Question: Which is more worth the effort? Guitar or Piano?

I've asked a question similar to this before, but I am still very unsure as to which will benefit me more in the long run. People say that if you can play the piano, you can play anything (hypothetically speaking, you wont be able to play any instrument), but they also say that piano is hard to learn, and in all honesty I found it rather easy when i started learning as a child. For guitar I find it more confusing and difficult, and I hate the sound of electric guitars unaccompanied, so I would only be able to play acoustic, but my old guitar teacher said I wouldn't have as many song opportunities for that. Also, my music teacher is a pianist, so I could easily get the lessons, we have to have a hired guitarist for lessons on that. I know piano sounds like a better option, but I'm worried to commit myself to something that I may regret. I cannot learn both, but I suppose I could learn the other once I am older. So, what seems to be a better option? Piano or Guitar? (by the way, I own a guitar, but not a proper piano/keyboard. I took guitar lessons years ago, but back then I was more interested in learning individual songs than actual theory, which I now regret. I have a little (not much, but a little) free time on my hands now, and I can find tabs on the internet and memorize them, but I'd like to go beyond that and maybe pick up a little music theory so I can understand what I'm playing and maybe play some things that haven't been written out note for note. I played guitar back in elementary school when I was 10, but my parents never wanted to enroll me in guitar lessons because it was a waste of money. I was pretty good back then too.
