Open Question: Could someone tell me roughly what grade i am in the guitar?

I do have lessons, but i dont do grades with it and i dont want to change tutor because he's really good. I only have him for a year and I can play mostly of the arpeggios shapes accurately. I know these following scales and could improvise around them: major, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, natural minor, melodic minor, harmonic minor, blues scale, pentatonic scale. I can read music but not really fast and can't apply it to the guitar, i can do it with the keyboards easily. and i can learn by listening but not very good sometimes i recognised what mode is the music. i mostly play joe satriani's stuff. more

Open Question: Guitar scales (20 characters? psh.)?

SO! I have just started learning guitar scales. I can't afford guitar lessons, so I'm using the lessons that can be found on Ultimate Guitar, and places like that. My questions are; 1.) Basically, should I just memorize all the scale patterns I can find online? Is that what "learning" scales is? If not, how should I go about learning scales? 2.) I know that scales can help me with soloing, but I don't get how. Can you explain this to me? 3.) Any other tips on learning scales? And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't tell me to take lessons. It really disheartens me. Thank you. (: more

Open Question: How long would it take to learn how to play the snare drum?

Im going into high school next year and I signed up for drumline. I can play guitar but I've never really had any experiance with drums. The band teacher at the high school that im gunna to be going to says alot of people who have joined the drumline hadn't had any experiance either, and some without any instrument experiance at all. So the band teacher at my school says it would probably be a good idea to take drum lessons during the summer. How long on average do you think it takes to learn to play the snare drum? And if you do play it, how long did it take you? Thank You! more

Resolved Question: Where to learn to play guitar online?

I've just gotten an acoustic steel-string guitar and figure that instead of spending my money on lessons I can just find out, step-by-step, how to learn to play the guitar online (needless to say,for free). I'm assuming that this instrument should be easy enough to attempt to master on your own. I hope I'm right. Does anybody know of any good websites that would help me get started (at least for the basics). Also, feel free to share your learning guitar lessons with me. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: I want to learn piano and guitar, is it better to take lessons for both at the same time or one at a time?

I want to learn piano and guitar, and eventually more instruments as well, but these are my two main interests and the ones I want to start with. I'm wondering if you think that it makes more sense to work with both at once, or start with just taking lessons for one for a while and then later incorporating the other one. I do have some background with the piano, I took several years of lessons years ago as a kid, but I am quite rusty. I have never taken guitar lessons, and know little beyond basic theory and a handful of chords. more

Open Question: HUH? SO DOES HE LIKE ME OR DOESN'T HE?! confused :S?

I was almost positive he liked me. He offered to teach me guitar and eat dinner at the dhall some times during the week. He also invited me to watch a movie with his friend but she was off partying and never showed up (the movie was because we couldn't find time for a guitar lesson). He offered to drive me after learning I biked next to a highway in the cold at night. The same night we had a guitar lesson and he made plans with friends so that it wouldn't last super long and I could party after (our last lesson was 3 hours after 9pm on a saturday night). He offered to let leave my guitar in his room so I could party and pick it up the next day. They went to McDonalds and he asked if I wanted something and offered to bring it to me (even though I was going to a different building on campus) and when I paid him back he was kinda surprised. He also let me know that he and a friend would be watching a movie later, so I dropped by. And after about 10 min of not responding on IM and a few hours of not responding via text he apologizes for taking so long (he was busy) yet never initiated those convos. He also asked me twice if I met any "striking young gentleman recently" told me he kinda has something with someone who he likes (not her) when I asked him if he likes one of his friends, then he asked how "my gentlemen" were and I told him I really liked one guy (but didn't say it was him). So thinking he liked me but was too shy to do anything, last night I went to go and make it clear that I liked him. I tried to kiss him but he held me back and told me that he was "kinda seeing someone" and "wants to stay friends." I'm not going to pursue him romantically or anything since he's with someone but if I try to hang out with him I'm going to feel like I'm pursuing him but he wants to stay friends. And if I find another guy I like and I think likes me I'll probably go for him instead. Should I wait until he contacts me again to hang out (I was normally the one tried to hang out with him, but he offered to teach me guitar)? Also, why didn't he say he doesn't like me "that" way? I'm really confused because I thought he liked me and I really like him. more

Hey guys, I have always wanted to play the guitar and I am sick of making it a pipe dream. I decided I want to start taking some lessons. I mean like how do you learn ? I want to teach myself because my mother works very hard and can't afford lessons for me.. But the thing is I can't read normal music. I know guitar must have notes you MUST know how to read right? I starting watching this guy on youtube. He shows you cords(I think they are called) like D cord and so on.. But I can't read music so I figured its useless to me.. So do I need to know how to read music ? And how do I teach myself that and how to play guitar ? http://www.youtube.com/user/JustinSandercoe more

I wanna be able to play the drums, guitar, bass, piano, and harmonica. I'm advanced at guitar already and I take lessons, but what should I play next, while focusing on guitar too? I know bass would be easy to teach myself, and so would the harmonica... So lessons; drums or piano? more

Voting Question: How do I get started REALLY playing the guitar?

I got my first guitar for my 8th birthday, and i'm 18 now. I have been playing it since then but all I do is look up tabs to songs I like and play off that. Getting them down pretty good isn't that hard for me, and I think that i'm experienced enough to take it to the next level. My friend whose a few months younger than me can play circles around me. He can sit there for hours and just make up the best sounding blues you could think of. He is in a band that is actually starting to take off pretty big right now. One of my other friends, his dad can do the same thing. I would love to be able to sit down and jam with them like I do, but not feel inadequate. How can I keep up with someone who knows his scales, knows his way around the guitar and can put his soul into his music? The trouble is that I don't know where to start. Music lessons are way too expensive and most of the time not worth it, and i'm not sure how to use the internet to find these things out for free. Do I start by learning scales? All of the scales? Until I can do them in my sleep? Do I just start messing around with my guitar until something that sounds good comes out? Can someone please help me? more

Voting Question: Can Someone Help Me With Writing Songs?

Hi I'm 17 and I have a sweet new telecaster and a pretty good band with my friends. I like rock, pop, punk rock, alternative, metal, hip hop, and indie among others so I like alot. I really wanna get creative and write like my favorite bands BUT: I've had some years of inconsistent lessons and I've tried singing for a previous band for a couple shows (not very well or confident). I can't sing well so I haven't got the strength or confidence to do it again...and I dunno where to begin writing a song... I have emotions but puting em on paper AND coming up with some chords and arrangments just kills me... I know I'm not a singer but is it possible to write some lyrics and melodies and maybe get a band where someone else can sing em eventually...? I always copy other bands and learn my favorite songs... I know a ton. I just wanna put all these influences to good use ya know? :P I just wanna know how I can get started without needing to have a big background on music theory or a perfect singing voice... I want someone to explain to me how to begin writing a song (with lyrics) from the level of an average rock guitar player with knowledge of some chords and some serious passion! What can I do?? Help and encouragement will be greatly appreciated. =] more

Voting Question: Beginner Guitar Question! Halp :( :) :( :)?

So I'm starting off playing the guitar, love how the solo's sound in like every song (lead guitar gogogo!) , I got an Ibanez RG120 :) anyways, Basically i'm starting out with nothing, well...the instrument and amp yes, but no teacher, and no real knowledge about it. I've learned very little over the course of a few months, because the only thing i do is occasionally look up the tab to a song i like and learn the intro. i only know about 5 or 6. I heard learning chords was number one...however, when i look up how to play songs with chords, i don't understand any of it, and theres always all these "tune your guitar in low E" or odd things liek that, i'm assuming i'm getting too far ahead of myself. I'm thinking about lessons, which woudl be awesome, but if i COULDNT do that....can anyone recommend anything that could help me start? i tend to look at my guitar and say, you have every song in the world in you, i just have to figure out how to get it out... so, any advice...or anything that could get me started, is greatly appreciated. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Which instrument should I learn how to play?

I really can't choose... I was thinking either Acoustic Guitar or Keyboard since I have them, or possibly Drums, since I had a set when I was like 4-8 years old, but then we sold them... I have never taken any instrument lessons, but I really want to learn how to play something. Music seems like much more of productive way to spend my time than doing what I normally do, so that is why I want to learn. But also, it would be really cool to learn how to play something more obscure such as an Accordion or Flute. Many of the bands I listen to have unique sounds in the background, so maybe if you knew what MeWithoutYou played, maybe you could answer with one of theirs...? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks. :) more

Voting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?

I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Sorry for the really long wall of text!I know a lot of guitar chords already. Not just the like seven essenial ones but several advanced onesand power chords, what I have trouble with is single noes and barre chords. Also, recommending thins because they'll take me farther if I play it in a band doesn't really make a difference, I already both play drums and sing in a band, I wouldn't be playing any of these other instruments in a band, I'd only use them to compose the songs for the other band members. more

I've asked a question similar to this before, but I am still very unsure as to which will benefit me more in the long run. People say that if you can play the piano, you can play anything (hypothetically speaking, you wont be able to play any instrument), but they also say that piano is hard to learn, and in all honesty I found it rather easy when i started learning as a child. For guitar I find it more confusing and difficult, and I hate the sound of electric guitars unaccompanied, so I would only be able to play acoustic, but my old guitar teacher said I wouldn't have as many song opportunities for that. Also, my music teacher is a pianist, so I could easily get the lessons, we have to have a hired guitarist for lessons on that. I know piano sounds like a better option, but I'm worried to commit myself to something that I may regret. I cannot learn both, but I suppose I could learn the other once I am older. So, what seems to be a better option? Piano or Guitar? (by the way, I own a guitar, but not a proper piano/keyboard. I do own a keyboard, but it has become quite old and useless)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2P63F6Chww&feature=related At first I was almost definitely going for piano, until I heard this, which made me begin to rethink my decision. Some guitar pieces are so peaceful, but so are many piano ones. more

Resolved Question: Do you think is it too late for being a rock star? (I'm 26)?

Hi, I've always wanted to be a Rock star, since I was a little girl, but I didn't have the chance to follow my dream until now. Do you think it's too late for me to follow my dream of becoming a Rock and roll star? Well, I don't need to learn guitar because I already know (I started playing when I was 12) and people say I sing very well (although I haven't taken singing lessons). I know how to read music. What I think I have to do now is to find a band to start playing professionally. What do you think? could you give me an advise? I really want to make it and I'm going to put all my energy, all my love and effort to reach my goal. All comments will be greatly apreciatted. Thank you very much. more

Resolved Question: Does he like me or does he just want to be my friend?

So I met this guy 2 years ago and I really like him but I'm not sure if he likes me. He is really sweet, kind, gentle, funny, patient, happy. He emails me everyday and he always asks me how i'm doing and how my day went. He asks me questions like.."What does dating mean to you?" and stuff like that sometimes. He always smiles at me and I told him I've never been camping up North and that it's something I really want to do so then he asked me if I wanted to go camping with him up North. he said he wanted to take me coz ive never been there before. I also told him I really wanted to learn guitar and then he offered to give me lessons. He always tells me that i'm really nice and when I say things like "ugh i wish i could look like Taylor Swift or Megan Fox" he tells me that i'm pretty and that I look better then them. he's not outgoing though... like he never stands too close to me and he never looks me in the eye for more then 4-5 seconds. He is an extremely nice guy by nature so how do I know if he likes me or not? Thanks in advance! (L) :D more

Voting Question: Would it be easier to learn how to play guitar or a piano keyboard without lessons?

I want to write songs, but I find it hard to do without some help with chords and such, and I would really like to be able to play an instrument, but don't have time for lessons. So I was just wondering which of the above would be easier for me to leach myself! I know how to read music and notes. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What is the best guitar for a beginner?

I am really interested in learning to play the guitar! I was wondering what good beginner acoustic guitars were available and the best brands to get for your money? Also, for someone who has never had any experience playing a guitar, whats the best route to go about taking lessons. I was planning on doing lessons for the first few months to learn the basics, then moving on to using books and programs to teach myself. What do you guys think would be the best approach for a beginner wanting to learn to play? more

Resolved Question: Have you ever taken any non-credit college level courses just for fun?

Typically, these would be done at your local community college. I know a lot of retired people and people bored during the summer take non-credit classes at my local community college when they're specifically using the for fun reason. I know there's other reasons to take non-credit classes, such as professional development, but I want to know what you've taken for fun and why!I'm taking a non-credit guitar class this semester. There's no point to me taking the more expensive for credit option because music has absolutely nothing to do with my major. Japanese is counting as my "fine arts" credits. I'm already paying for once a week guitar lessons from a teacher one on one. It might be interesting to also get (far cheaper!) lessons once a week in a small class setting. It'd definitely help me learn faster! more

Resolved Question: A good accurate site for learning acoustic guitar?

I'm really keen on learning guitar.. But I can't really afford lessons at the moment.. so I'm gonna learn on my own. Anyone know of any good websites that'll help me learn the basics? That'll be great. :) Thanks in advance! xo more
