Guitar Learn Playing Questions asked

Open Question: Is there any way to make my fingers and hands bigger?

I am learning to play Guitar and Bass and my fingers are kind of small. They will probably grow more as I go through puberty but whatever. more

Open Question: What's the next musical style I should learn (on which instrument)?

I can play rock (the easiest genre out there) on drums, guitar, piano, and bass I can play funk on drums I can play jazz on guitar and drums I can play bluegrass on guitar I can play folk and folk-rock on guitar I can play both ska and reggae on piano, guitar, and drums I can play blues on guitar I can play latin drums I can play heavy metal on guitar and drums (but I do not know drop tunings) I've played drums in a screamo band, but use a more progressive experimental style I also sing punk rock, heavy metal, hard rock (like that kind of country influenced hard rock), screamo, hardcore punk, bluegrass, folk/folk-rock, progressive rock (although I don't know if prog rock has any specific techniques), blues, and ska (but I don't sing ska very well) What's the next thing I should learn?I only own an acoustic guitar, piano and drumset, I learned bass from a band-member. So unless I can fin a really cheap horn-instrument I can't do any of that. more

Open Question: How to play progressive rock on guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, piano, and vocals?

My band right now is playing psychedelic rock, and even though we've kind of moved towards ska-punk and post-hardcore punk on a few occasions, I think it's been a kind of an unspoken agreement that eventually we will be playing progressive rock, when we figure out how. We all try to make that kind of impressive music reminiscent of Rush, Pink Floyd, and The Mars Volta. I know how to play all of these instruments except for trumpet. The trumpet and piano aren't very important in this band, they aren't technically in the band, more like guest musicians. In this band I play drums and I'm usually the lead vocalist, unless the song fits a baritone instead of a tenor, then the guitarist sings instead. We only have one guitarist, but we have written several songs that use two guitars, and when we record them we have the same guitarist just record twice. We all have a pretty advanced grasp of all rock concepts, most musicians should since its likely the easiest genre to play. We have a small amount of blues experience, I've been playing bluegrass and folk-rock in my spare time on guitar, and I'm going to get three guitar books soon, "scales and modes," "jazz guitar," and "blues guitar." We also have a little bit of reggae experience, I know basic ska and reggae techniques or guitar, piano, and drums. So if we're going to be writing progressive rock, is there anything else I should know? Should I be using 2-5-1 progressions like in jazz? How do I combine the different styles that are commonly associated with progressive rock? Should I learn anything about metal, because all I know are power chords and blast beats with metal (and I could pobably figure out the whole drop D tuning thing without much trouble) and I don't know if there's anything else metal-related that progressive bands incorporate into their music? What other techniques should I learn, and should I teach my band members the techniues I learned while playing bluegrass and folk-rock? Any tips on odd time-signatures, in drums I'm fluent with 6/4, 4/4, 3/4, 5/4, 7/4, 9/8, 12/8, 6/8, and 2/4, but on guitar I usually only use 4/4. I own an acoustic guitar, messed-up drumset, and keyboards, should I invest in other instruments to compose this music? Thanks, sorry for the LONG question. more

Open Question: can i teach my self to play guitar?

you can get these "learn to play guitar" books.. if i bought one could i teach myself to play acoustic guitar? if i practised like 2-3 hours a day :) thanks all x more

Open Question: Explanation of what certain signs mean in guitar tabs?

I'm finally learning how to play my guitar and I love it. I've started on very simple stuff like the intro to "Come as You Are" by Nirvana. However I've been running into signs in tabs that I don't know the meaning of which makes them impossible for me to play. If anyone knew of a site, or could just list the signs and their meanings I would greatly appreciate it. A couple examples of the signs I'm talking about are; "/", "p", "h", "b", and literally any other sign you would know of, I'm sure I'll run into it eventually anyways. Thank you so much. There's a part in the song "Sweet Home Alabama" that reads " 0/2" on the second string from the lowest string. How do I play this because I don't have anywhere to slide from?http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/l/lynyrd_skynyrd/sweet_home_alabama_tab.htm That's a link to the tab. Thanks more

Open Question: How long will it take my to learn guitar?

I've learnt how to tune, hold (properly) and play G major, C major and D major chords (but cant switch between them quickly) on a acoustic guitar. This took me about a hour and a half (split over two days) using internet tutorials. How long would it take me to be able to play a few basic songs reasonablely? Open Question: I need a song to learn on guitar.?

I am a guitar player, i have been playing for a little under a year now, and i don't want to brag, but i'm pretty good. i just finished learning the solo to stairway to heaven, and have nothing to learn. i just wanted some input on a cool rock song with some nice moderately difficult licks and solos. more

Open Question: When should I buy my second guitar?

I have been playing for just over a year now and am having some guitar difficulties. When I started, I wasn't sure if I wanted to really learn it, so I bought an inexpensive pack including an Epiphone Les Paul Special II with the accompanying amplifier. This was good for a few months, but now the bridge pickup is completely dead and not working whatsoever, and the neck pickup cuts in and out, and has sounded awful since purchase. These are the stock pickups which I didn't realize were so bad/cheap until recently. In fact the whole guitar is extremely poor quality. So my options are to buy new pickups, about $100 each and I have no idea what's happening inside yet so I would have to pay a tech at $30 per pickup. So this is $260 on trying to upgrade a low quality guitar. -Or- I am looking to spend around $600-$700 on a decent guitar that will last me for a while. I would of course play everything at the store before deciding exactly what to buy. And yes, I am sure that I want to continue learning and jamming with my friends. So what do you think, should I fix my existing guitar or treat myself (and anyone listening :) to something new? (I'm 16 years old) more

Open Question: How hard is it to play an upright bass?

Hi, I've been wanting to learn how to play the upright double bass for a while. I decided that next year I'm going to join orchestra. I'm going into 8th grade and I was wondering how hard it is to learn how to play. I'm kinda scared to join because I'm afraid that I'll be the farthest behind because a lot of kids started in 5, 6, or 7th grade. I'd also be the only girl. Im a 5ft 1 Inch 12 year old girl. So I was wondering how hard it was. I want to learn the double bass, the type you see in orchestra. NOT the bass guitar. Oh yeah, I played piano for 5 years and I'm pretty good at it, I guess. Thanks. more

Open Question: Where can I get started with this?

I would like to learn how to sing. I'm not very good right now, but it's something I would definitely like to pursue. I'm a little nervous to sing in front of people, so I don't want to start classes just yet. How could I get started on my own to where I'm at least comfortable to take classes? I'd also like to learn how to play guitar, but don't really know how to start there, either.. more

Open Question: first acoustic guitar?

ive wanted to learn to play the guitar and im just stuck on picking one, i have a budget of about 250-300. i was thinking something between the yamaha, ibanez, and a fender. i know that if the bridge is close then its easier on your fingers and will be easier to learn, also if the neck is not to thick then thatll make it easier, im looking for a guitar to learn on and that will be easy to learn on and play...pretty much the easiest guitar but still a good sounding, quality, nice one. thanks more

Open Question: Learning to compose music on a computer without knowing how to play any instrument?

I am interested in composing music on my computer (I run Ubuntu 9.10). My options are Linux Multimedia Studio (LMMS), Ardour, Jokosher, and Audacity (Jokosher and LMMS being quite similar to GarageBand on Mac OSX). But the problem is, I don't know how to play any instrument (and I do not own a MIDI keyboard). So I guess my question is, and I apologize if it is stupid, but I am wondering if it is possible to learn through those applications (to play by ear), or is there an app where I can just write the notes and it converts it to music? I'm interested in doing rock music (with drums, bass, electric guitar), and at times add violin and piano. So can I still compose without having any prior knowledge of music, and just play by ear, or will it be better if I rather just learn the actual instrument. more

Open Question: can you answer music theory question?

That's not my questions, haha..its a 4 part question, so I wasn't sure how to ask..ok How do I know which notes and chords sound good together on the guitar? Also, I know they are A B C D E F G and there are things like Major, Minor, etc (what exactly are those called, the notation after the letter, like 'major' for instance.) which ones, for each letter, should I practice? Also I need an explanation on playing in certain "keys," "pitch" and "octaves," what are they and how to they differ? So just to recap: How to form good sounding music using a) all notes b) all chords c)mix of both ? Which different kind of each note do I need to learn as essential to playing guitar (I know maj and minor are two of them)? What are these notations after the note formally called? Some info about playing in key (most important.) and a little info about octave and pitch.? This would help me out very much! Thank You in advance. more

I've been wanting to learn Losin' Your Mind by Pride & Glory for a while now. So I decided to sit down and look at some tabs of it. I'm having a problem at the solo part. I can play all of the solo except for a section of it. I have watched videos of covers and of Zakk Wylde playing the solo and it looks nothing like what the tabs has.
