Guitar Learn Tablature Questions asked

Resolved Question: Guitar Questions/ Survey?!?! ----Help Please!!?

Hey, so i am still learning the guitar, and was wondering if you could answer these questions for me. Doesnt matter if you are a pro or a newbie just like me. All answers are appreciated :) 1) How much would you pay for guitar lessons per month? Is $50 reasonable or is he just ripping me off? (He offers 8 classes a month, twice a week.) 2) How long did it take you to get good at guitar? 3) Are you self-taught or did you take lessons? 4) How long a day do you recommend to play the guitar? 5) I have been teaching myself for 1 month now. I know how to play some of the chords ( C,A,G,E,D,B minor, Em,Am,Fm,F). I can play songs with tablature only. Am i doing well? Any tips or any additional things I need to know, are appreciated. Thankyou so so so much!!! =D Im 12 btw..If that helps. more

Resolved Question: Which Killers Songs Are Easy To Learn For a Beginner on Bass Guitar?

I've been watching a few vids on YT of bass covers and Mr Brightside & Tranquilize seem easy to play, but I'm only a beginner [playing for 4 days] so I won't be able to judge as good as someone who plays bass to Killers songs regulary. Any help would be great. Also if anyone can play by ear can you give me the tablature to Tranquilize's intro; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iBJtepKluQ more

Voting Question: question for those who started on electric guitar?

so i recently began to learn how to play guitar, but it seems like acoustic would have been a better choice, because it also seems like chords ring more clearly on them, and i would be more sure if i was right or not as far as how the chords actually sound. i wanna play a lot of acoustic songs, it seems like it would be great for learning. right now the only thing i see myself learning is how to play guitar tablature, and id be missing out on chords (i am practicing them, but i cant practice on actual songs it seems like because they dont ring like an acoustic would, so as a result im always speculating if it should sound like this or that) where am i going wrong? sorry if some of this doesnt sound accurate but i guess im just asking where i should start from and where i should lead into when starting from an electric guitar?val i dont understand your answer... it seems as if everything ive gone to, including the book im reading on how to play guitar says learning other peoples songs is a great way to learn. i also share that opinion with you on being "stereotypical", but obviously you build from the basics and up. for instance being able to play power chords, pull offs, hammer ons... all come with practice, and from playing other peoples music. i mean i cant just start making things up on my own right off the bat, i need to practice how to move up and down the fret board cleanly while doing these things right? what better way then through other peoples music? what im asking is where did you start from an electric guitar, through chords, tabs, or what? chords seem more geared towards an acoustic guitar, but i could be wrong. at the same time chords are sometimes deemed "essential". and if i wanna learn through other peoples music, that would be correct. but with an electric, it seems different?and not everybody learns through lessons, i know plenty who have learned themselves. i am a quick learner, but i have a lot of questions. but thanks for the input! more

Voting Question: Memorizing guitar chords and theory?

ive been playing guitar for 4 years now, but probably differently than most others. when i began, a friend simply taught me how to read music (just tablature, not that fancy stuff), basic structure of the guitar, and that was it. everything else ive learned and built upon that. and now im realizing that by not learning chords at all or how to read theory, my playing is rather limited. is there any easy way to start memorizing chords and to read sheet music? and to play chords well, cause i suck at that too haha more

Resolved Question: How to start playing blues guitar?

So, I'd like to learn guitar, but what is the best way? 1) Learn theory, chords, scales 2) Learn tablature 3) continue with my music lessons so i can play greensleeves? WHAT SHOULD I PRACTICE I HAVE NO IDEA:) Thank you for the advice. Right now I am knowledgeable with basic chords and strumming, I am classically trained musician but not on guitar, which is all Greek to me. I did start on an acoustic, and I agree that it is the best way to begin. Hard on the old fingers, but makes the electric seem like a dream! more

Voting Question: Down and Out (The Academy Is...) chords?

I'm trying to learn the song "Down and Out" by The Academy Is... on guitar, and I can't find the chords anywhere. I can't read tablature, and I'm not asking for instructions, but if anyone can find a link or post the chords (not tabs) for this song, I'd be very happy. :D Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Should I learn classical guitar?

I first picked up guitar about nine years ago. But even though I've been at it for years, I've been stuck at a beginner's level. I can read chord charts and tablature. I know commonly used chords/fingerings. I can figure out the chords to a lot of songs by ear if I sat down with a recording, pausing for each chord as I look for its match on the fretboard. But all I can do so far is just simple chord strumming. I don't know how to read music and I haven't really even gotten the names of the notes on the fretboard memorized (except for the fifth and sixth strings, because that's usually where the bass notes of chords are located, right?) I play songs mostly from the alternative rock genre (partly because I like the genre, and partly because there are a lot of songs from the genre that are easy enough for me to play). And sometimes, I like to try writing my own songs. Which is why I would like to learn how to play lead and improvise - so I could embellish my own songs and come up with more interesting sounds. I think I could use some music theory too. Without music theory or even knowing the notes on the fretboard, one could still come up with musical ideas, but to me, doing it that way feels like groping around in the dark. Also, I was thinking that if I knew some music theory, it would be a lot easier for me to figure out how to play other people's songs by ear. Of course, I could just look for tablature and play by numbers, but I want to understand what I'm doing... not just mindlessly hit these notes without knowing what they are and why..... So recently, I decided to sign up for lessons with a teacher. (I think one of the reasons my progress has been so slow is that I have been playing and learning mostly by myself. I was thinking I could learn more, faster, with the guidance of someone who knows what he's doing.) When we first met, my teacher asked me what exactly I wanted him to teach me. But I wasn't really sure how to put it in words. There are so many things I want to learn, and I probably don't even know what some of them techniques are called. :) He also mentioned that he didn't want to teach me by reading off sheet music, because, he said, it just might make me dizzy. Part of me agrees with my teacher. The thought of learning to read music, how it relates to the guitar, and playing the music as I read it just scares me. It seems so complicated. Also, if he does teach me to read music, he's going to be giving me classical lessons. Now, I LOVE listening to classical music. It's beautiful! It's just that I never really imagined myself playing it, because, well, it looks so difficult! :) However, there's also a part of me that thinks maybe it would be good for me. It'll motivate me to learn the notes on the fretboard, I'll learn proper fingering positions... and I'm not sure, but I have a feeling that I'll need to know how to read music if I want to learn some music theory - is that right? So now, I'm not so sure what I should do. Should I go ahead and learn classical guitar? Or should I just ask my teacher to teach me rock/blues songs and scales and solos, etc, by "shape" instead? Because I really want to understand what I'm doing... and I'm up for learning new and challenging things. But then again, I'm not sure if my brain can handle it (I'm already 27 years old)... or if it would really help me with my goals (songwriting, improvisation). I mean, it's probably not very realistic of me to aim for really becoming a classical guitarist, when I'm starting out this late in life. But I'm willing to learn what it has to offer, so hopefully I could apply it to other genres and perhaps even my own music. Yet, I'm also afraid that like my teacher said, it would just make me dizzy.. What do you think? :) By the way, I already decided to give the classical lessons a try. Last week was our first classical lesson. We haven't gotten to the part with note reading yet - just p-i-m-a exercises and tablature. It takes me forever to get it right there and then, on-the-spot, and we haven't even gotten to the good stuff yet! hahaha! :) Not to mention that these hourly lessons don't come very cheap. :) (we went over a Study in E Minor, "Andantino in C" and "Romanza") So now, I'm wondering if I could ask my teacher if he could give me the classical lessons more as homework/supplementary material, and just use more of our session time on rock/blues techniques..? I don't know. Would that be a better idea? Thanks... :)haha, yeah Matt B... I tend to write too long... haha... :) I'll try to write shorter next time. :)) Thanks. more

Resolved Question: how hard is it to be a self taught guitar player?

I already have a guitar, it was a gift to me and originally had no idea to play it but now I have been inspired by my favorite rock musicians and want to be able to play along with some of my friends. Problem is guitar lessons are kinda steep in cash and I dont wanna ask my parents about lessons. Now my dad on one hand can teach me as he knows very simple chords but in the end his teachings are very limited. I was thinking of looking up on how to play tablature, its not chords but eventually if I learn I can move on to something more complicated like chords but how far will this take me? I dont plan on being in a band or anything but if a time or some similar scenario comes up I want to be able to read notes and not just rely on tabs. How far can one go in being a self taught guitar player? Would it be a deadend later on? Any tips/thoughts on what I should/shouldnt do? more

Voting Question: Would you be considered a good guitar player if every song you learn is straight tablature?

I've been playing guitar for 6 years now and can play all kinds of different songs and scales, but the only things I can't do is hear a song and play it by ear, and read notation(just yet). I know a guy whos been playing for about 30 years and a few solos hes learned he learned from tablatures. Actually most of the tabs I've read off of were either Power Tab editor downloads or guitar pro downloads. I've always thought all roads lead to Rome and whenever I hear a song I wanna learn how to play, the first thing I do is look up the tablature and if it's really simple then I feel stupid but if it's complex then I feel good and I didn't waste my time. I can play all sorts of songs, I can play stairway to heaven with my eyes closed but every song I've learned, it's from reading tabs and I feel like that's completely cheating because they didnt have all that way back when. more

Resolved Question: Which note do I play?

Resolved Question: Electric Guitar Problems? Answer Please?

I have a full size Electric guitar and a Marshall amp for it. I just bought this a week ago, and i have tried a couple things to try and learn but nothing works. Info about my experiences: 1) Where to start? I have tried using guitar books from music stores before and those have never worked for me, and i can't afford lessons after purchasing the guitar and amp. 2) Which to learn? Tablature or Music notes? I've seen both used by people. Which should i use? Should i use tablature first then switch to music notes when i get better? 3)I have no prior knowledge of guitar playing besides the books i have tried that got me nowhere. 4) Free websites i can use? Good resources? Tips, and about how long you think it will take before i am no longer a beginner if i practice for 1 hr+ each day more

I've been wanting to learn how to play the VOCAL ARRANGEMENT of a song on guitar. This means a song on guitar where I would be singing what the vocalist says. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also...could anyone recommend a FREE website to where I can get tablatures to such songs? more

Resolved Question: Bass tablature for the song Mornings Eleven - The Magic Numbers?

Does anybody know where to get the bass tab for the song Mornings Eleven by The Magic Numbers? It would be even better if someone could manage to find the Power Tab version for bass guitar. I checked everywhere for the bass tab to this song, because I really like the bass line and want to learn it, but it's nowhere to be found. I googled it dozens of different ways, and also checked Ultimate-Guitar.com, which has like almost every song you'd ever want. It wasn't there, only the guitar chords to it...and I don't want those. Please help me find the BASS tab(or power tab version of it with bass)? :] more

Resolved Question: Help with harmonizing?

So I'm a guitarist in two metal bands, and one of my favorite things in metal guitar is harmonies. But I can't figure them out that well. When I get a good riff to harmonize to, I can't seem to figure out the harmony. I suppose I should learn theory, but I don't have time for that. I play by tablature and ear. I can usually figure out small harmonies. But I want to be able to do whole harmonized solos. Do I absolutely have to learn theory? Or is there a way to cheat? Like to move up so many fret to make a harmony? For an example of what I mean, listen to just about any solo by Trivium. Or the intro to The Song Remains Unnamed by Silent Civilian. more

Voting Question: New at playing guitar! need opinions please!!?

So I recently bought an acoustic guitar. I've been playing for about two months now and I have learned a few chords, learned how to read basic tablature, penatonic scales, and different tunings etc.. I'm SERIOUS about learning. Music has been a huge part of my life since I can remember, but I have never tried for myself until now. I'm mainly doing it for fun right now and I have to admit, it's kinda self rewarding to see myself progress after I thought I would never be able to learn how. Can anyone tell me what I should be practicing and how to get good? I've been referring to youtube for tutorials, but I would love opinions from people who actually play! Thanks a bunch :D more

Resolved Question: In guitar tablature, what does 15-(15) mean?

So ive been teaching myself guitar for a while now, and ive gotten fairly OK just by reading tabs and learning chords. I was looking at the Cliffs of Dover tab by EJ and theres a part where it says : ------12---14-------------- 15----------------15--(15) (those are the highest strings) when i play it in guitar pro, it plays the last 15th fret an octive higher, but the only way i know how to do that is play 7 frets higher on the string above (which is a big stretch) someone please tell me how to do this or what to do, thx more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to learn guitar just by working with online tabs?

I'm really wanting to learn guitar this summer in between semesters. I don't really have the money for personal lessons, though. I've looked at the tablature online, and I've figured out how to read them. Is it possible for me to learn/teach myself guitar with these tabs? more

Resolved Question: I need help with guitar tabs!!!?

So I have been playing guitar for about 13 months and there has always been one thing that detered me from learning a song...I am fairly literate in reading guitar tablature except a few symbols. Even with the key I don't understand what to do. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s177/RandallSharp/EnterSandman7.jpg This is just an example. This is the rhythm fill 1 for Enter Sandman - Metallica. I don't understand what the /7 means. I know it says to slide and i think it might mean where you just rest your hand on the note and strum then run down the neck, but I don't really know how to get that sound :( I consider myself ok a guitar. The only thing I have trouble with is solo-ing. If you know what this symbol means, please let me know? Also, if you have any other guitar tips, they will be appreciated :) Thanks in advance, I will pick best answer for whoever is most helpful :)Please no one tell me to "Google" how to read guitar tabs. I know how to read guitar tabs, this symbol needs to be better explained to me from another person. A video link would be perfect :) more

Resolved Question: How do you play a song on a guitar from traditional sheet music?

I know how to read tablature, and as a pianist I've been able to sight-read sheet music for going on 15 years. However, I've been playing a guitar for a couple years but I'd like to learn how to play from sheet music instead of tabs. Basically, I'm just looking for how sheet music relates to the guitar; I have a whole stack of sheet music books and I'd like to be able to play them on something other than piano. Resolved Question: Advice on learning to play the clarinet...(Complete beginner)?

Hey guys, just wondering if you can help me out with something?… First of all a bit of background…I´ve been trying to learn the guitar on and off now for a few years and so far haven´t really got too far past playing ´wonderful tonight´and a few other basic songs. My dad is a blues guitarist so I figured I felt kinda motivated to start playing..plus a do love the guitar! However…I have recently realized that my lack of progress was more due to a lack of inspiration rather than motivation..in other words…the guitar isn´t really the instrument I want to be playing! I am an avid jazz fan and adore the trumpet and clarinet and would like to start learning asap. I chose the clarinet over the trumpet just because I feel it has a smoother sound, whereas I find that unless a trumpet player has been playing for years it can sound a bit brassy and off tune (don´t get me wrong though I ADORE the instrument! ) Soooo my question is…how long do you think it would take to reach a decent level on the clarinet? Bearing in mind I have to start reading music from scratch as I only ever played from tablature with the guitar. Also bearing in mind that my practice schedule would be the following…around half an hour-an hour weekdays and perhaps an hour or 2 on the weekends. Anymore than that would be a strain on my schedule. Plus I intend to take classes an hour each week. Also..for a beginner do you advice wood or plastic clarinet and how much would be a good amount to spend on one (bearing in mind my budget Is fairly tight) ALSOOOO (sorry for the super long post) I am 25…is this too old to start from scratch?  I really should have got into this earlier, but I am super motivated… Any advice would be most welcome  more

Resolved Question: please help me learn to play my favorite songs on guitar?

(btw i dont have a capo & can only play on the first couple of frets unless you give me tablature)please keep it somewhat simple (for example i can play "our song" by taylor swift so something around that level would be great) thanks! more

Voting Question: How to begin playing guitar?

Okay, I have been playing guitar since like 2004 then I quit for a little and then started from scratch again recently. I have been taking online lessons, teaching myself and getting tabs online. I am VERY overwhelmed with all the stuff I have to learn and buy and I don't quite know a lot of this stuff. Here's how far I am: »I know my 7 basic chords »I only know a few intros and riffs to songs and I want to learn a full song very badly. » That's pretty much it except for a few small things. Anything you can contribute would be greatly appreciated! Easy songs to learn, links, how to read sheet music, how to read and understand tablature, etc. ANYTHING for a beginner guitarist. PS: I would like to know how to read the little special symbols and chord abbreviations in tabs. Also, if you can define any guitar terms that would be very helpful! Thanks! The main thing I am overwhelmed about is all the crazy confusing effects pedals and stomp boxes. Like I went to my local music store, trying to find me and easy to use effects pedal and all there was was like all these confusing mixer boards and professional effects and all types of distortion. When all I wanted was like a little GFX 707 stomp box so yea... more

Resolved Question: Acoustic Guitar beginner?

Hello, I have learned some simple chords and looked at a few songs, but, sadly, I'm confused. As I've been looking at the guitar tablature and chords, I began wondering what determines how FAST or SLOW you play the song. It's not like with the flute (which I played for the last few years) where you have half notes or quarter notes, that tell you how fast to play it. How is it with the guitar? Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Suggestions on self-taught acoustic guitar?

Would you suggest self-taught acoustic guitar? I don't want to ask my parents for too much, by asking them if I could have guitar lessons. i'm already taking private tennis lessons, and they cost a lot. we could definitely afford it, but i don't want to ask them for so much considering how much they are already spending on me. i was wondering if self-taught guitar would be the way to go??? is there any learner dvds or books you would suggest? anything you could tell me about reading guitar music, and how long it would take to play simple songs. i don't want to be a big guitarist or be in a band, i just want to learn how to play songs like taylor swift's. thanks everyone also, Is tablature easy to read? what exactly is it? and what is a fret exactly? thanks a bunch! i really, really appreciate your help! you have no idea.:) more

(up until half way through the 3rd solo, which i can't do) And people ARE starting to comment on thats all i play. Which admittidly, yes, is all i play. I do play other riffs too though. i just need a list of relatively easy songs i can teach myself by using the program "Guitar Pro" or just tablature off the internet. Does anyone know any DECENT, easy/medium songs. Please, nothing like Smoke on the Water, Seven Nation Army, etc. I'm into Rock, Metal, and Indie mostly Guns N' Roses are my favourite band cause i idolise Slash... based on all that, can you think of something i will enjoy learning and playing ? Metallica are cool also. more

Resolved Question: Good guitar book for left hand finger exercises and/or chord exercises?

I'm currently learning classical guitar and while I do not have a problem with my right hand (playing fingerstyle by the way) I ALWAYS have problems with my left not quite catching on. Some random stranger with a guitar I met while commuting home showed me this neat book about a week ago....the book had a whole bunch exercises in it and uh...I'll describe as best I can: -It wasn't in tablature (I'd actually have to read the notation) -It showed all the p i m a fingerings above the notes -and I think it was blue and white........ Don't know if it was specifically for classical guitar or not, but I do know that I'd love to find out what it's called exactly. Can someone help me out with this? Best answer for the best/right answer :) more
