Open Question: beginner guitar help?

I've had my guitar for a while now and i haven't made any progress with learning how to play. My main problem is that i don't know where to begin. in a few months my sister is getting a bass for her birthday and I want to get a head start on learning so I can teach her as well. So where do I begin? Do I start with learning chords or do I just learn easy songs and work my way towards harder songs? Resolved Question: I'm having trouble playing the guitar...Fat fingers?

I bought myself an acoustic guitar and am trying to learn how to play. I'm just starting out and finally found someone to give me free lessons. The problem I am having is that my fingers are too big. When he tries to get me to play a chord, my fingers touch more than one string at a time. He told me he believed there were guitars that had wider fretboards (sp?) that may be easier for me to learn with. I have practiced quite a bit and this is a major hurdle for me. Besides losing weight, LOL, what are my options? I do not believe practice will make perfect in this situation; even when he shows me exactly how to place my hand/fingers, i am still touching more than one string. ANY and ALL advice is welcome. Resolved Question: Learning guitar and dont know where to go next?

well ive been playing guitar for probably about a year now but i really got into it probably about 6 months ago. Anyways, so i have one of those starter packs (fender starcaster). So i can read tabs, i know some major chords, i can play songs like dear maria count me in, dirty little secret, decode etc (i like alternative music) well now, i dont know where to go. Im not taking lessons nor do i plan on taking lessons and those online video lessons are my last resort. What should i do? I kinda wanna learn how to do those improv solos and blues and stuff. Resolved Question: Do pianos really have no soul?

Sorry if I offend anyone but I personally think piano is one of the most souless instruments out there. There is so little contact between the person and the intrument. I just dislike the sound of the instrument. You can't vibrato the notes. You can't bend the notes. These really gives a piece of music much more emotion in my opinion. You can't use harmonics either. I know some very talented people out there. One girl I know is an excellent pianist. She said that she hated the sound of the instrument. She wants to start playing guitar instead. Two other people I know said the same thing. Some might say that electric guitars have no soul because it uses technology and machines. However, don't pianos use technology too? Electric guitars can do many things that pianos can't do. I can only think of two things that pianos can do that guitars (electric or acoustic) can't do. Pianos can play chords and melody at the same time, and Pianos have a wider range of notes they can play. So is it just me, or do pianos have no soul? Hey, if you are offended, feel free to recommend some piano music to me. Also, feel free to argue. I really want to learn to appreciate piano music.Wow thats a pretty nice sounding solo. I really like Keith Moon's solos. They are amazing.That's a really ingenius interpretation of Stairway to Heaven. I've actually seen that video before. I never favorited it, but now I will. Resolved Question: (I) Want to learn piano for free?

So here's the deal. I'm 15; I've been playing guitar for about 7 years, and singing for about 2. I've taken guitar lessons since day 1. I think I'm pretty good, and I'll put some links at the bottom if you guys want to tell me about it, or judge. But that's not the point. I've written a few songs on my guitar with my voice, and generally get some good thoughts about them from people. But lately I feel as if they're missing something. I know they need percussion, which I'm getting soon. I may pick up a cajon. A quick visit to http://musiciansfriend.com will tell you what you need to know about them. But, back on subject, I think they need a little keyboard in them, and I don't know how to approach learning it. I had a guitar teacher since the beginning. He, sadly, passed away due to cancer this past summer. Near the end of our sessions, we started switching, a little, towards keyboard. So for experience, I pretty much only know major and minor chords. If there are any good free sources that you know of that can teach me keyboard, please name them off. I would really appreciate it. Resolved Question: Ideas for jazzy christmas songs to play at senior home?

My friend and I both love music, and we decided to play some gigs at Old Folks' Homes in our town. The shows will probably be in early December. We've played gigs before, but never at a place like a seniors home. Also, it's near Christmas, so we have to learn some cool holiday material that will be both fun to play and good for the seniors to listen to. My friend plays guitar. He specializes in shredding and 80's style heir and arena metal, but he can play other styles very well too. I play jazz piano, and am studying classical music. We both love to compose and arrange. These old folks will probably like jazz and traditional carols. I already wrote jazzy arrangements for Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and O Tannebaum (O' christmas tree), as well as a funky latin fusion thing that has melodies from Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Silver Bells woven into it. My friend knows some old-time christmas tunes on both guitar and cello, although he'd probably prefer to do the jazz. Does anybody know of any fun jazz arrangements of christmas songs? I can't sight read, because I am visually impaired and I play by ear. Both my friend and I can read guitar tab, and we both know music theory. Feel free to just leave chord progressions to cool christmas tunes. more

I'm 13 years old and I LOVE the guitar! I love the way it sounds and (being the rocker that i am) hear it in all my music! I was listening to "Medicate" by AFI and listening to the solo made my passion for this instrument grow (lol). I have a small acoustic in my closet and it's been sittin there collecting dust since christmas... 2 years ago. I gave up on trying to learn twice because i couldn't figure out how to tune the damn thing and the second time when the chords were getting difficult. My parents wanted to get me lessons but once the recession hit, it wasn't an option anymore. I want to learn how so badly! I'm a really fast learner so it should be quite easy for me once i get an explanation by a person and not a really vague beginners book! I found a tuner app on my ipod and apparently its a really good one so i guess i can use that to get me started but its the notes and stuff that im having trouble with. Any help? Websites? Tips? Songs i already know how to play are -master of puppets -enter sandman -mr crowley -aces high -Scarified -Rust in peace -pain killer I know the scales, i know how power chords work. So..I've had a Fender Strat for 3 years now, and took lessons for about 3 months and learned nothing because I didn't wanted to practice (I was 12 years old and didn't understand the whole practicing concept lol). My parents aren't going to pay for lessons, so I was wondering if anybody has learned how to play guitar from a book.. (I kinda lost the book my guitar came with XD) So anyway, my knowledge of chords is kind of..limited. I know what each note means when it comes to time but I can't read music. I'd like to learn though. more

Resolved Question: I need help learning the theory of music!!!!!!!!!!!!?

I want general help on the theory of music (preferably free and online)... I want to now things like what notes are used to make chords and all the formulas for creating or figuring out how to make a chord....I need this for both the piano and the guitar...I'm self taught but i figured learning some of the basic would do me good....that and to make sure i am not doing anything wrong or over complicating things...thanks for your time^^ more
