Open Question: how can i learn guitar tabs to unknown/indie artists?

I have always loved to sing. I have taken guitar lessons for about 5 years but hit a dead end because i just wasn't recieveing what i craved for in music anymore. i have been trying to cover a bunch of my favorite artist to gain inspiration but, being indie bands, their music is not tracable via internet or music books. i am becoming increasingly frustrated that i can't figure out what notes they are playing on the guitar. does anyone have suggestions for how i can learn the tabs?? i have tried by ear and can figure out simple chords and strumming patterns but have trouble with fingerpicking patterns. any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! thanks so much!! :) more

Open Question: Tips for getting better at guitar?

I have been learning guitar for about 3 months now, however my progress is slow. I practice everyday for 30 minutes or longer and can only play Wild Thing and Adam's Song by Blink-182. I know 12 chords and 2 scales. My practice schedule consists of strumming chords to make sure I can play them right, using a metronome to develop rhythm, and practicing switching between chords. Am I making good progress so far? Any tips on how I can get better? more

Open Question: should i give up learning the electric guitar ?

i picked up a electric guitar. I learned how to get the metal sound with a distortion pedal. I learned how to tune the guitar in normal position "D" and down tuned "C". I am learning a lot of chords by heart the usual open chords and also all those power chords that are so often used in metal such as D5,B5 ect.. Yet i can't play guitar. My hand is not strong enough and i don't know how to make my left hand work correctly i mute strings that should not be mutted. It's frustrating. Lots of theory and little to no play at all. I know how to read music tabs too. I know there is a device available at music store especially to build strengh in the fingers I am inversting lots of money to do tuning on my guitar new bridge, new pots ect.. I would hate not actually learning the guitar. more

Voting Question: Summer job playing guitar?

First of all, I'm 13 years old, and that is a little young to be looking into a summer job. But I'm very motivated and I want to start saving money and doing what I love- playing guitar. I came up with this idea this morning, and while it seems far-fetched, it might just work. I just want to get opinions for people, for example how much I would charge per hour and whether or not you think you would even hire me. Here's the plan: I'm pretty well known in my town for playing guitar and performing. I would do kids' birthday parties, mostly girls' I guess (because of the music I play, and the music i can sing). I can pick up songs really fast if I know the chords played in them and I've at least heard them, so I can learn the popular little girls' songs like Taylor Swift (I already know a lot of her songs), Demi Lovato, and Miley Cyrus, and anything on the top 20 songs of the month. I could have a big list of the songs I can play and the guests can request songs from that list. So, now I need your opinions. If you were the parent of a little girl, maybe aged 6-10, would you hire me (for a comparatively low price) for a "backyard" birthday party? And how do you think I could get the word out? Any suggestions would be great!! And by the way, the artists I listed before are not the artists I play most of the time- no haters, please. more

Open Question: I have some questions about the guitar for an intermediate player?

I am an intermediate guitar player, I play in my schools jazz band and can sight read most of the stuff we play after I learn the chords for the songs we play, when I solo, throw in licks and stuff like that I don't play the scales your supposed to play with the chords I play what feels right, In rock I am pretty accomplished though I'm not sure what the whole thing behind it is, I've never really learned a lot of songs in it the songs I do know are -Crazy Train Ozzy Osbourne -Enter Sandman Metalica -JEssies Girl rick springfield -Summer of 69 bryan adams -Hero Nickleback -you shook me all night long ACDC and I know more intros to songs than I can count not to brag either but I'm a great imrpovist MY question is how do I advance my playing, I know like one scale by heart a bunch of chords well enough that I might have to check my fingerings every once in a great while, but how do I advance my playing I'm not sure in whichc direction to go! I want to get to the level wehre I know enoguh that I can compose my own songs but I want to take the right journey, so what should I do to make my playing better, learning songs isn't my main goal, but it wouldn't be bad, so what should I do to imrpove my playing? Not looking for the typical PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE stuff, I want to know what I should study more

Voting Question: Guitar scales and chords in different tunings.?

ok so i play guitar in c standard tuning. Ive been playing guitar for about 5-6 years now. And when ever im learning new chords or scales or just anything im learning them in my lower tuning but im still calling them what they would be called in standard tuning.. For example: a G major scale would'nt be a G major scale anymore because im 2 whole steps down in my tuning.. Instead it would be something like Eb major scale (i think). Same goes for chords, because everything has shift down those 2 steps.. Would a A minor chord still be called an A minor chord despite the tuning? Should i be calling these chords and scales by what they technically are.. or for the sake of simplicity by their names in standard tuning?? more

Resolved Question: Where do I put the capo on my ukulele?

Hi I'm trying to learn "World Spins Madly On" by The Weepies, on my ukulele. I have the guitar chords pulled up, which is usually how I learn a song, but this one calls for capo on the 6th fret (guitar). So how would I translate this to my ukulele? Okay... so I'm a 14 year old girl. And I really want to learn how to play the guitar. I went to a guitar lesson with my friend. The guy tried to teach us "Sleeping Sickness by City & Colour" and I SUCK AT IT. I'm trying to practise.. but I just can't do the strumming right to the beat... the beat is so weird.. and I have no idea how to do it. The guy wrote on a piece of paper that it's "Down, Down, Down, Up, Down | Down, Up, Down, Down, Up, Down...." But with arrows... I tried playing the song over and over to get the beat... but I just can't play it. Any tips?!?! I'm a beginner on guitar, I barely know any chords... :( more

Resolved Question: How do I become A great Guitarist?

I know this is too general of a question, but I have always wanted to get really good and be able to play complicated pieces. I have been playing for a few years, but I have only taken classes on and off, plus I really don't know the notes by heart. I definately have good control of my fingers and can play a few chords, but I just don't know what to do next. I am taking Guitar 1 at school next year and it should be easy considering I have a little experience. I'm 13, in 8th grade (14 very soon, though). Could you maybe list different elements of guitar I will have to learn (even if I already mentioned)? Or at least offer some advice as to what I need to do to become an expert. Danke :] Suggested category: Politics & Government > Immigration---- Nice, Y!A, just nice.@CrazyPerson: As much as I might consider taking online classes, I don't think I'm going to trust them from someone with "Crazy Person" as a username, but thanks ;]I can actually read tabs, so I guess that is to my advantage. I still feel that there is much I need to learn. more

Resolved Question: How to go about learning guitar......?

Ive been playing guitar for a year and a half, I know intermediate songs (closer to the heart, la villa strangiato etc.) and i never learned any music theory. I can play pretty much anything if in tab form. I barely know the notes on the fretboard and pretty much no chords. Ive tried learning music theory through online lessons but it didnt help. I just dont know where to start. Should i buy books (which is what i prefer)? I just cant figure out music theory because theres is not literal starting point. I want some form of teaching that has step by step learning. What should I do? more

Resolved Question: where to start with music theory?

So, i play guitar, and am at the point where i need to know music theory. Where is the best place to start? learn the modes, major scales, box patterns?? the internet and books will be my teachers, so, what do you suggest i start with? i've been playing for like 8 years, and have developed high manual dexterity in my fingers, i am fluent in playing all chords, open or barred, and changing between them. I can figure a lot of stuff out by ear and can learn songs from watching people play them on youtube pretty easily. but i just want to be a better guitar player, and theory is my answer. I know the pentatonic minor scales for some of the keys, and i know the names/location of the notes on the fret board. so i not a total newbie to theory, but I've always jsut kinda jumped around. where should i start? more

Resolved Question: Is this a good 3 paragraph essay? Please help me improve it?

"The reason i believe that i would make a good addition to [Insert school name here] is that i get motivated to do the best i can when other people are around as apposed to home-school when it's just my mother and I. I think that the all around experience that [Insert school name here] has to offer would be a very refreshing and fun thing for me to enroll in. I think i lack confidence sometimes in school and that's why i believe that having a crowd to somewhat compete with, would be good for me. I also have an enormous love for words and am always picky about spelling, and annoy my friends often when i correct their grammar. I try to maintain a sense of humor throughout my life and it seems to help out immensely, I am also often told that i have a witty and sarcastic personality. I'm rather outgoing at times but am somewhat shy and quiet until i get to know someone. I really enjoy photography and it is something that i never thought i would enjoy as much as i do, considering i always had cameras shoved in my face by my sister's and mother while growing up, but it is definitely a hobby I'd like to pursue for the rest of my life. I have always been interested in music and attempted to learn the guitar, unfortunately i only learned a few chords until a mixture of laziness and boredom took over which stopped me from continuing with it. Music has always been my escape from whatever difficulty i have faced and most of the time it is able to change my mood to whatever i need it to be changed to. I've never really been interested in sports and have always been more into the arts such as photo editing and sometimes drawing." I know it probably sucks, it's my first essay believe it or not. Please tell me how i can make it better! When i read it over it just doesn't seem like it's good enough to get me accepted and if i were actually saying this it just wouldn't sound like me at all, also in the directions for the paper it states to "Please include at least three specific reasons with supporting details" as to why i believe they should accept me. more

Resolved Question: how do I play Guitar F chord easier?

I've looked at other answers and mine isn't exactly the same question. I am a beginner and I am learning the F Chord like this: | 1 | | | | 1 | | | | | 2 | | | | | 3 | x x My problem is I can get the flat finger for E and B, but the third finger on the D string dampens the sound of the G string when i stretch it that far. It isn't on the fret either, i just have thick fingers. I have to contort my hand to get even a glimpse of a good sound. I know I have to practice, and stretch, I was just wondering if by anyway there are tips for finger placement to help my hand stop hurting. I have writhing pain in my thumb (behind the neck of the guitar) and half way down my arm. Am I doing something wrong? more

Resolved Question: WHY is it so hard for me to learn how to play guitar?

I have an electric guitar i got by someone because they didn't want it, it has a few minor electrical problems.....anywho My friend is pretty good on guitar and claims to have learned green days song "Time of your life" in 3 hours by teaching herself, and whenever she tries to teach me, i completely fail at it, i either can't get the strumming pattern down, or have a lot of trouble transitioning chords.... I was wondering if getting a professional teacher would be good, because i know a lot of people who just taught themselves and theyre really good. Maybe i just can't pick it up by myself? It's weird, i've tried to teach myself, but it's SO HARD!! Maybe i don't have the talent? Though i played Tenor Saxophone for 3 1/2 years and i was actually really good. But i reallllly want to learn to play guitar, any advice?I'm also 15, if that makes any difference more

Resolved Question: Piano songs, and Advice for a beginner?

I've been playing around on my sisters keyboard for about 2 months now, and I'm really starting to get into it. I've started learning a few chords and I know the notes, you know C D E F G A B and stuff. I've started to learn a few song but some I get stuck and don't finish them, I taught myself play guitar fairly well so I have learned some of the songs I know on guitar onto the piano by ear but its just very simple stuff. I am really getting frustrated with not finishing a song, I have learned parts of "Fur Elise" and "The River Flows In You" but i haven't gotten far. I practice every day (I probably work harder at learning piano than I do with my school work), maybe I'm just getting to far ahead of myself? I don't want to learn super easy songs like "twinkle twinkle little star" or "mary had a little lamb" I want something more challenging but not to hard, Do you know any songs that would be good for me to learn? Also I don't know how to read music sheets and was wondering if that is something difficult to learn on your own (I bet if I could read them it would make things easier)? Also are there any websites that can help me with that? I Thank You in advance, and apreciate any advice that might help me be a better pianist more

Resolved Question: what is a I IV V chord progression?

I prefer drums and I'm WAY better at that, but writing songs requires some melodic knowledge so I started learning guitar from books and the internet, so I know basically how to play chords and how scales/modes work. What I don't understand though is that keep coming across the phrase "I, IV, V chord progression." I thought I knew how chords worked alright and how to put them together pretty well, but then where do roman numerals come into it all? I wanted to compose some progressive sounding songs and the internet told me progressive rock doesn't often use the "common I, IV, V progression." If its so common I'm probably using it by mistake, and I don't even know what it is! Please help more

Resolved Question: Question about guitar Power Chords and finding what key they're in?

So, i've been playing guitar for awhile, but only recently have I thought about actually learning the whole "theory" behind what I'm playing (I know, it's long overdue). I have been reading about chords. I read that a chord is made up of three individual notes, that when played together, create a chord. So, are power chords to be considered chords? You're technically only using 2 notes, even if you use 3 string power chords, two of the notes are just an octave higher... so it's technically not a chord, right? Or at least in a traditional sense it's not. If you're playing in the key of C, and you have a 2-5-1 chord progression, the chords you use are Dminor, G and C.... right? My question is, if you're using only power chords, how do you make the d minor chord... or any minor chord for that matter? If you use a D power chord, is it still considered a Dminor power chord because you're writing the song in the key of C? Is there such thing as a minor power chord? If a band writes a song in A minor, yet, they only use power chords, is that song really in A minor? Or do we find the key by the melody or solo that they use later in the song? I'm confused... so if this sounds retarded, then just tell me I'm retarded and I'll buy some other guitar books. To an extent, they are used to mask poor playing, but there's a lot of bands that have great guitar players, but with distortion, it's hard to hear every note in a true chord, so power chords are used so everything isn't so muddy. It's just, every little kid hears that, picks up a guitar, plays those same power chords and considers themselves just as good as their idols, hence, the punk rock scene.... and myself is included after bands like Nirvana came around. I only recently decided that I want to learn how to take a rhythm I created, and know what scale and chords I'm using, to help develop the song quicker, by knowing what key I'm in, and what chords would be in that key, and what scales I could use for a melody or solo, instead of just blindly trying to figure out stuff by trial and error. Music theory is a lost art I think. I've played with several musicians, some good and some bad, but only a hand full understood music theory, although, that doesn't mean they were creative. more

Resolved Question: Learning guitar and pulling my hair out?

I'm trying to learn how to play the acoustic guitar. I managed wonderwall by oasis after a few of hours/ sessions and I'm now having bash at brown eyed girl by van morrison. However I'm finding it really hard to change fast enough between the chords. Every time I move my hand it takes me a second to find the chord (never had this issue with wonderwall as I didn't have to move my hand). I spoke to my mate and his explaination was "it just sorta clicks"....... is it really just a case of perserverance? as I've been at it for about 2 hours and don't feel I'm getting any faster. I know the likelihood is everyone will stay just stick at it... guess im really asking did everyone else have this issue and how long does it take (roughly) to learn a 3 chord song as it seems miles away for me at the minute. PS I am a self taught beginner so if anyone responds with anything remotely technical please make sure an idiot like myself can understand it more
