Learn Guitar Music Questions asked

Open Question: What kind of electric guitar/bass should i learn to play?

Last summer I got a new guitar from my Uncle. I don't want to sound ungrateful for this gift but somehow it just doesn't seem to be the "right" guitar for me.... Its a Brownsville New York guitar which isn't known to be the best company ever, but ive been told its a very nice guitar considering the brands low quality reputation. I agree but I didn't get the immediately 'this feels right' when I picked it up. So I've talked to my dad and we're seeing about getting me a nice instrument. I'm starting to think about a bass guitar (that's what he played) but there's so many options to choose from with all the different guitars basses and combinations thereof. So what would you recommend to me? But to help you get in to more detail: 1) I want something electric 2) Although what I am looking a right now is just the type of instrument, brand names are helpful 3) I'm aiming for something good for rock music, but something that can easily change style would be very handy for expanding techniques and playing 4) I'm looking for quality, too. Something with good tone quality and exceptional overall. I know we might be looking at something pricy but I guess you get what you pay for. more

Open Question: guitar, what should i do at this performance?

so i show up to school today, and i was volunteered to play sum guitar music for this party thing that my school does every march. but it will just be as entertainment. but i like shred guitar, heavy music. and i was only told about this 4 DAYS IN ADVANCE! thats nowhere near enough time to write a song, or even learn 1. so im gunna run thru sum things ive already learned. but i dont like to play other peoples music, so i havnt learned to much stuff, so i was gunna improvise it. although...thats not sumthing im an expert at. i know my scales, arpeggios, etc, etc. but what i really need r sum ideas of sum shapes i cud play just as filler, trying to keep people interested. if i cant see this coming together, i dont HAVE to play, but id like to. i just wish i had been told earlier! >.< thanks... more

Open Question: Which guy would you choose?

Guy A: Tall, handsome, footballer's build, blonde, blue-eyed, midwestern, very set in his ways, major in economics, likes to party, loyal, incredibly smart, comes from a wealthy family, gives a lot of compliments, is very time-oriented, makes an incredible effort to be interested and learn about things you're interested in, similar social circles, has supported you a lot when you've had problems but hasn't really understood them, more thinking than feeling. Guy B: Average height, good-looking in an artsy way, slim but muscular, dark hair, dark eyes, theater major, plays guitar and sings, really funny, easy to talk to, passionate, emotional, easy to confide in and identifies with what you're saying, doesn't have similar friends as you do- though he has a lot of them, is a little naive about the modern world but makes an effort, has similar music taste as you do- though not in TV shows or movies, share a common phobia, more feeling than thinking. Thanks! Just conducting a little social experiment :-PIf you could include your age (if you feel comfortable sharing) as well- that'd be helpful! Thanks! more

Open Question: Which Misfits music did Claudio Sanchez play?

In an interview, Claudio Sanchez, the lead singer/guitarist for the band Coheed and Cambria, said that he learned to play guitar by listening to a misfits cd and jamming with it. Does anyone know which cd or songs he played with? more

Open Question: Bass guitar notes, note names, and where they are on the fret?

Alo, I play the bass in my school band. Up until now, I've always just played the notes right off the sheet music, and thats great. BUT!!! recently, we're getting lots of music with flats and sharps. and not like flat signs and sharp signs on each individual note. i mean like before the time its gonna be in, it shows which notes are going to be flat and things. So....the problem is....I dont know the names of the notes i play. i mean if i see a B flat(it took me a while to figure out that it was called b flat too)i know where it is on the fretboard, but when other notes i dont know all of a sudden is supposed to be played as a flat, i get so confused, because i dont know where the natural note is on the fret. i know most of the lower notes, but the high notes i cant learn...ugh...anyone know where i can find a diagram that shows the note as it is like on a sheet music, the name, and where it is on the fretboard?by the way, i know the fact that sharp is one down and flats one above. i need to know where the natural notes are so i know where the sharps and flats are more

Open Question: I need your opinion on this!?

Ok, I'm 13 years old. I want to go to Juilliard more than anything else when I grow up. I'd give up everything to go there. It's my absolute dream. I play guitar, I write fingerstyle music for it. Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1GZC0GQKOA Also like Kaki King. I just recently started to play the piano, and within about an hour I could play small parts of Bach's Partita No.3 in E minor. I use my piano to figure out notes on a guitar, and compose music. After a short 3 hours on the violin, I knew the notes to Bach's Partita No.3 in E minor..but playing it with the bow, lol, it sounded terrible, but the thing is, is that I knew the notes to it within such a short period of time of my very first time playing a violin. The people at Sam Ash music store in Countryside said that I have a natural talent for stringed instruments, because when I picked up the Viola for the first time, they said it sounded so clean and nice. I wrote my own string triplet. I'm learning how to write scores, because I want to go to Juilliard when I grow up. What would you classify all this? Musical Prodigy? I don't know..what do you think about all of it? Honestly! Thank you so much :) more

Open Question: Learning to Play the Banjo?

I learned how to read music in school as a little kid and taught myself to play piano (I'm pretty good) a couple years back. I can play a little bass guitar, but not as much as piano, and now I'm seriously considering learning to play banjo. My question is, as a near-complete beginner in the realm of stringed instruments, will I be able to teach myself to play banjo? I'm a pretty smart guy, so I think I could understand the mechanics of it, and, as I said, I taught myself to play piano a couple years ago and have grown quite proficient in it, so I know I have the ability, patience, and discipline to teach myself a new instrument. And I'm also pretty good with music in general. I'm just looking for a knowledgeable third party's thoughts on this, so what's your honest opinion? Also, if you do feel I can learn it, can you recommend any good starting banjos or beginner's banjo kits/books? Preferably ones that I can find online for a relatively low price (I'm just doing it for fun, I don't want to spend a fortune) that are still of acceptable quality? I know that's a lot to ask, but I really could use some help on this one. Thank you. more

Open Question: how can i learn guitar tabs to unknown/indie artists?

I have always loved to sing. I have taken guitar lessons for about 5 years but hit a dead end because i just wasn't recieveing what i craved for in music anymore. i have been trying to cover a bunch of my favorite artist to gain inspiration but, being indie bands, their music is not tracable via internet or music books. i am becoming increasingly frustrated that i can't figure out what notes they are playing on the guitar. does anyone have suggestions for how i can learn the tabs?? i have tried by ear and can figure out simple chords and strumming patterns but have trouble with fingerpicking patterns. any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! thanks so much!! :) more

Open Question: I love my family but I LOVE this surname in my family history... how do I explain it to them?

I have a really common full name. It's annoying, and embarrassing. I'm always getting lost in the crowd, and they're always trying to figure out which one I am. I don't want to hurt my family, and I don't want to be unhappy any more, I've been unhappy for almost all my life because the name really causes me a lot of emotional pain. I don't have any sense of identity and nothing to uniquely identify only me. It's really awkward, I dread being asked what my surname is. I feel like it's not even my surname. I feel like I was born with the wrong name and I was meant to have a different one. I don't feel at all like myself. I would like to change my surname. I have a valid reason... I'm a musician and no matter how talented you are, you have to stand out. Having a common super plain name is an obstacle. I don't wanna hurt my family. I don't like my first name either, but I don't wanna change the first name. It was picked out for me, whereas if I picked out a first name it would like sentimental. I did some research into my family history and I found out a couple things. One of my ancestors was from Spain (I don't know their name, they were adopted, but I can find out) and I also have Irish ancestry and another ancestor's last name was King. I think King is an Irish name, and I LOVE that last name. I think it's so classy and regal and noble. As for Spanish surnames, I LOVE Spanish surnames, even the common ones. I would like to change my surname to an ancestor's surname. I'm obviously not doing it to distance myself from my family, it came from our family history. I feel like it's a shame that we had a beautiful surname in our family history and it died out. I think it's a shame for it to just be lost forever and I'd like to take it. If I had a cool last name, like Garcia, or King, and I married a guy named, say, "Fartbomb" (no offense if that's your surname) there is no way I'd take his name. If I were simply not fond of our surname, I wouldn't do anything. I've been miserable all my life and I want to be happy and have a sense of identity. I really love my family but I've never had a sense of identity and I've been lost in the crowd all my life. I'd like to change my surname to an ancestor's name. I don't know how to explain this to them. I don't want to hurt them, but I don't want to be miserable. What if my family knew how unhappy I was? People tell me to accept the surname, learn to love it, but I've struggled to do that all my life and I can't bear it anymore. I feel like I was meant to have a pretty name. My first name (Sara) is ugly! No offense to any Saras out there. It's so plain. But I just want to change the surname. I've talked to an attorney and apparently there's a way. I just don't know what to tell my family, and I don't wanna choose between being miserable and hurting them. I really want to be a musician and I know my name is gonna be an obstacle for success. Everyone that has heard me play the guitar says that I'm phenomenal and even brutally honest people who know music tell me I have a chance at being famous... but a lot of people have told me that that full name is way too plain and generic. I knew this without being told. I want a pretty name and I want to increase my chances of being successful as a musician. I really want to change it and have a valid reason. What do I tell my family? \ I don't just want to use a stage name... it would feel strange to use a fake name. I want a name that officially belongs to me.My full name is VERY plain. It's up there with John Smith on the generic scale.Whoever said it was my only problem? I said it bugs me more

Open Question: Why choose virtual instead of actual?

I'm totally out of the loop about the whole "Rock Band" phenomenon, that is, these gaming systems like Wii, etc., where you can buy a plastic guitar thingy with buttons on it, put in your Rock Band or whatever software, and push the right buttons on your faux guitar. I was watching YouTube and saw this teen who was some kind of Rock Band "virtuoso" apparently. His fingers were hitting all those buttons on the "neck" of the guitar, and it was very impressive. My question is: If people are so into music and have the digital (as in "finger") dexterity to become pros at these games, why the heck don't they just buy a REAL guitar (about the same price as a whole Rock Band setup, I imagine) and just learn to play it? If your fingers can fly around on that plastic guitar neck, pushing the right buttons, and you have good enough hand/eye coordination to follow all those little colored "notes" on the video console screen, it's not really a HUGE jump to being able to teach your hand to "fly around" on a REAL electric or acoustic guitar fretboard, and not only that, if your eyes can follow all those little colored dots on the video game screen like that, you could PROBABLY even learn to READ MUSIC, which is something I'm not good at because I can't scan real musical notation that well. So, once again: If you're going to invest all those endless hours learning to be a "Rock Band legend", why not master the actual instrument. You never know, you could be the next Eric Clapton,........So why choose the "virtual" when you might as well be choosing the "real" in this particular case/???"Though a good question, I detest your ignorance for the hard work that must go into music." Oh, I forgot to mention" I play the piano, guitar, harmonica, recorder, drums..... You know what they say about ASSumptions...maybe you make too many, my friend. Yeah, you have one thing over me...I never played a "virtual" instrument, but have played "real" instruments for years. Sounds to me like you just started playing real ones. You probably played the video game versions for longer than the real ones. Maybe that's why you forgot how hard it was to "master" Rock Band, or whatever virtual one you played. By the same token, when you just start with anything, like a real instrument like guitar or bass, obviously it's going to seem much more "difficult" at first than when you get better at it. Oh, a "tip" for you, 'bro: Don't get too overwhelmed by all those notes on a real fretboard. If you play a serious of notes starting at the first fret, let's say, and then move the exact same notes(cont.) up one fret, you're already playing in a different key? Did you know that? The guitar fretboard has repeating patterns. It's not as tricky as you think, if you understand the logic behind the way it's laid out. Contrast that with a piano, in which you have to know the flats, sharps, whole and half notes, etc. in every scale, because you can't just "move the whole note pattern up a fret" as with the guitar, bass, etc. BTW, your post sounds suspiciously like the other one I received by "jason..." because I entered the posting in 2 different catergories. He was as disrespectful as you are with your last sentence, although he placed his disrespectful comment at the top of his answer. Are you the same guy, with 2 different accounts. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I would have given you the "best answer" rating for this question, but you blew it with your rudeness, pal. Learn some manners, eh????Sorry Kay, didn't know you were a woman. For that I sincerely apologize. Incidentally, I got the following comment at the end of "longaway" 's answer to this same question (I posted it in 2 categories, because I wanted it to be read by both musicians and those who play games like Rock Band (and/or those who do both, since you and some others seem to fall into that category). Here's "longaway"s comment: "Would you ask someone playing Call of Duty why they don't just enlist in the Army if they want to experience combat?" You lose points for originality Kay (*joke*) since obviously you're reiterating his argument. If you want my answer to your question, therefore, read the answer I gave him. Apart from that, I think you ought to know that at least ONE respondent to my question told me that playing the drums on Rock Band actually helped him play the real drums better. So, despite what you and others who have answered my question have implied, some people believe there IS a carry-over effect from virtual musicianship to "actual' musicianship. I also know this because I have read there are "transitional" softwares out there for people who are "virtual musicians" a la "Rock Band" etc. and who want to play an "actual" instrument. If there was absolutely NO carry-over, they wouldn't bother inventing such "transitional" software, now would they? The word "transition" implies there is already SOME basis for going on to play a real instrument if you're already exposed yourself to the "Rock Band" experience. I have to tell you Kay, I NEVER this to be a "hot button" question, but apparently it is. I got some people who were reasonable in their answers for all but maybe one or two lines, then they just got all hissy on me and starting launching what amounted to ad hominem attacks on me for daring to ask such a question. Weird.Well, Kay, I accept your apology if you accept mine. I'm wondering if some people got the impression that my question was intended to be "provocative" since I somehow managed to push a few buttons out there. It really WAS just interested why more people didn't try to put the work into learning a real instrument (although some have) if they were spending so much time learning virtual instruments. Maybe some people perceived an unintended "judgmentalism" in my question. It was not intended and I apologize if it came off that way. I mean, it's not like I never played a video game in my life. I didn't THINK I was being a musical "snob" but maybe I was in the eyes of some people. Hey, if people would rather play virtual music than the real thing, I would be the first to defend their right to do so. I'm totally down with freedom of speech, freedom of choice, and all that. And no, I never played Call of Duty in case you were wondering. I never fought in a war, but did grow up in NYC.(cont.) I've seen enough violence and (wo)man's inhumanity to (wo)man. Enough for a lifetime (I lived there for over 3 decades. So I really don't need to play violent video games. Like I said to "longaway", I would never suggest somebody go fight in a (senseless) war just because they enjoy playing COD in the comfort of their dens and living rooms. Like I told "longaway", if the draft was ever reinstated, like in Vietnam, I would do everything possible to make sure my son did not go if his number was picked. I'd spend my life savings protecting him from the hell that is war. But hey, if you and other kids out there get your jollies from virtual violence, I perfectly understand. Gets kind of boring in the "burbs, and/or out in the hinterlands, right? I know. I live in a safe, boring town in New England now, where soccer mom's drive huge SUVs with yellow ribbon stickers on the back window. Where I live, the cops will detain you if somebody said you looked at them cross-eyed. more

You never know, you could be the next Eric Clapton,........So why choose the "virtual" when you might as well be choosing the "real" in this particular case/???jason sl8 five Dude, I don't know what kind of guitar you overspent your money on that costs 3 times as much as a Wii with Rock Band, etc. Maybe you should've been a more competent consumer. I have about six guitars (including the 3/4 size Oscar Schmidt I bought for my son) and the most expensive one, the Martin backpacker, for which I paid I think $150 new, also happens to be the worst. All my other "cheap" guitars play as well as those costing a lot more, because I didn't go for (other than the Martin) "big name' brands and I did a lot of research before I bought them. So, I don't "buy" your argument that those who are into video games such as Rock Band are spending less money, necessarily, that is. As far as all your reasons why the virtual type of music making is preferable over the real thing, well, I read your list and disagreed with a lot of them. BTW, you can't play "real" instruments with your friends? How do you think many rock bands got started?"Would you ask someone playing Call of Duty why they don't just enlist in the Army if they want to experience combat?" Bad analogy... I'm totally against war. I wouldn't ask anybody to go off to another country and kill babies and children. I've got a kid of my own, and if there was ever a draft again, I would encourage him to go to Canada. more

K uhmm theres this guy in 3 of my classes that i never really payed attention to before, but after kind of getting to know him, i'm starting to fall for him.. His locker is next to mine, and lately we've been making tons of conversation. I've learned that we like the same music, tv shows, sports, style, and we both play instruments. Some days i feel like he's flirting with me (since i play guitar and he plays bass, he asked if i would "jam with him sometime", and other days he doesn't talk to me at all. I try to flirt with him, and I always feel jelous when he talks to other girls, but I don't know if it's worth it. He is the nicest guy and i feel he's perfect for me (not to meantion he is very attractive) but should I ask him out/persue this relationship? I don't know if he's interested or what? I'm so confused because i've never 'crushed" so hard lol. What should I do? Sorry this is really long lol Thanks SOO much, i really appreciate it.I'm also moving schools next year so I don't have that much time :( more

Resolved Question: What should I do about my daughter's boyfriend?

My 16 year old daughter has finally found a boyfriend her father and I actually approve of, and just a few days ago i learned something very disappointing about him. They are the same age, he is the school's starting running back, and he is an extremely talented musician (He plays all sorts of things ranging from classical guitar to piano). Everything seems perfect right? Not so much for I just learned he is the drummer for a metal band, which highly contradicts our families beliefs. We allow our daughter to wear whatever, go out wherever (As long as she is home before 10 PM), but her father and I do not allow that kind of music. That kind of music goes against Christianity. Although she assures me that rock/metal really doesn't go against our beliefs, I know better. What should I do about him? more

Open Question: Questions about the movie SELENA?

1.) Selena's father says it difficult to be a Mexican-American. Why does he say this? 2.) Selena's Spanish is seen as a potential problem for her in Mexico by her dad. Why do you think she is able to over come this? Why is she so popular? 3.) What accounts for Selena's huge popularity among "Tejanos"? 4.) Selena's success as a singer came by singing Spanish only tejano music. Was this music her first love? What kind of music did she prefer as a kid? 5.) What reasons did her dad give her to learn spanish? What was his own experience at "crossing over" into doo-wop? Who rejected him? 6.) Why is Selena's dad so amazed that he says "for you [Selena], the borders do not exist." 7.) Consider Selena's husband and guitar player, Chris, he was a rocker, why did he agree to play in Selena's band? why didn't Selena's dad want them together? 8.) In what ways is Selena American? From a Mexican viewpoint what aspects of Selena's life/career are Mexican? Open Question: I want to live with my dad. Its complicated.?

I am 14 years old and I want to live with my dad. I have been living with my mom since they got divorced when I was 2 and she has full custody, my dad has visitation. I am at his house on most weekends. They only live about an hour away from each other, my dad does ALL the driving. All my friends live at my dads house, my mom just moved again. I dont like the school and the kids here or the area in general. When Im done with my chores everyday I have nothing to do. I could go "play outside" like my mother tells me to but I dont have friends to go hang out with and doing that everyda by myself gets old. I feel like Im wasting my time being here. She wont even let me get a job so I can save up money to buy myself a car in a year and a half or pay my cellphone bill which I pay for myself. I also bought my own computer and pay for the security. At my dads house, I have horses I want to train and compete on. I can learn the guitar like I have wanted to for the past 3 years. I have a hound puppy my daddy bought me to train to hunt. I write my own music and I could do shows at my parents friends restaurant. I could get a job working at a horse barn with disabled children. I would be going to the gym a few times a week. My best friend would live down the street from me. I wouldnt have to go to the church my mom wants me to. I would be a happier person. My life would have more of a purpose. I would be doing activities that keep me busy and out of trouble, and go to the high school I wanted to in the first place. But she wont let me. We have talked about me moving there before and last summer I alsmost did but she changed her mind last minute. She says I will miss her and I need her and My brother and sister need me. But I have a brother that lives there too. I dont know what to do. I want to go so bad. Any advice? And I would see my mom almost every weekend so idk why she has such a problem with it.And my dad wants me to live with him. He is the one who pays for my doctors/dentist app. And my braces. And my insurance. And opened a bank account for me. And pays $800 a month for child support when he really cant afford all of that. My step-dad is an ex-mlb player, He has money. And my mom doesnt work. But they still complain all the time about how my dad doesnt pay for anything i do.....And my mom wont let anything she buys me go over to my dads house. And when he buys me things she turns around and complains about how he can buy me a new t-shirt but cant pay his full amount of child support every month. But when i need a new pair of jeans or shoes, ask your dad to get them for you. He also lets my little sister who isnt even his daughter come over all the time with her friends and buys her stuff. When my mom paid for my cellphone bill, she would yell at me when I brought my cell phone to his house. When my dad or step-mom buy me stuff I can do what I want with it. My moms gives me "gifts with attachments". She wants to be in control.I love both of my parents equally, but I am looking for more stability in my life. I want to be a kid and be able to live life without having the adult worries on my shoulders, I can do this at my dad's house, but I just can't at my mom's house anymore. Ok enough complaining, sorry but I just needed some venting space. Well this is why I didn't list the details, because the list just goes on and on...They live in different cities. I couldnt alternate weeks because of school. When I said my friends live at my dads house I meant they live in that area. more

Resolved Question: How can I make him stop telling me?

My dad is telling me lately that I should learn to sing. I hate singing and I don't want to learn how. Even if I did want to learn, I couldn't. I am playing piano, guitar, and trumpet. I am also playing tennis. I am so busy. The reason he wants me to sing is because he thinks if I want to play in a band or be successful with music, that I have to sing. He thinks if I am playing a piece, I should be singing it. I don't want to learn, and he has been bugging me about it for a long time. How can I get him to stop bothering me??Real answers please! more

Open Question: Is a good idea to learn how to read music sheet if I have the possibility?

Look, I am 16 years old, a guitarist and I play for like a year (I really started seriously for a few months). I have a live guitar teacher. I study with him for like 2 months, this month is the 3rd. I asked him about music sheet, what is it, because I saw a portative in Guitar Pro program, and then he said "OK, I'll teach you how to read it if you want". He said many students he had were running away in fear when they heard about reading music and theory stuff. Do you think is a good idea to learn how to read it? It will help me a lot in the future? What if I decide to go to a music school? more

Resolved Question: Don't want to teach my friend guitar?

I have played guitar my whole life, and sung/wrote music, and play other instruments. Out of the blue, my friend has decided to learn, and wants me to teach her. I reluctantly agreed after she argued 'why not?' But now, she's been telling people at school she plays before I've showed her anything, and even put up pictures of herself on facebook holding her Dads guitar. Upside down. Its just so fake! And she absolutely hates country and jazz music which I like, and always made fun of me for it, but now she's like it's biggest fan! What can I do? more

Resolved Question: Should I play the Viola or the Piano?

Ok, my dream is to get into Juilliard when I grow up. I'm 13 years old, turning 14 in a month..I play the guitar (fingerstyle) and I'm REALLY good at it, I compose sheet music for the guitar. I use my keyboard to identify the notes, and I write them down. It looks really cool, but difficult looking sheet music. I love listening to the violin. It, along with the cello and viola remind me of the 18th Century. I really am fascinated with the 18th Century, and the sound of the violin or the cello, viola really pleases me. I also LOVE the piano, I love listening to it. Beethoven, Handel, Bach, I love the piano. I can play small parts of pieces by bach, beethoven, on the piano. I've only been playing for about a month. This really impresses people, and the piano is my favorite instrument to play, I love it. It makes me happy. As for the viola, the guy at the Sam Ash music store in Countryside claimed that I have a natural talent for String instruments. That I have a gift. and as said before, I love string instruments, it really reminds me of the 18th Century, I love the sound of it, and I'd really like to learn how to play the viola. I also heard, that theres a much better chance of getting into Juilliard if I learn the viola, since they do not have many viola players. I can't decide! The keyboard that I want to get 88 keys is $1,000+, and the viola I want with the book and new strings comes to a total of $271. What instrument do you think I should play? more

Open Question: My dad is against my lifelong dream 100% what should I do?

Eversince I was 9, my dream was to become an artiste(a professional singer, dancer, entertainer) But my dad is 100% against it. I know coming from an asian family, we tend to get a little conservative, but alot of asians stars now-a-days are rising. And I'm 13 now. When I saw that S.Korea's Ent. Comp. like JYP/SM/YG was holding Global Auditions, I thought that this was my chance. I've been very passionate abt music since young. I started singing at 8, learned to play piano and guitar by myself by the age of 10. My mom could see how passionate I was at singing and playing musical instru. like the piano and guitar, but my dad is always very against this idea. Everytime I watch S.Korean Ent. Shows and performance, my dad will always be like:"These ppl can't study, that's why their doing this kind of jobs." i was flared! I tried to tell him that not all ppl have the same goals in life. Just because their entertainers doesn't mean they can't study? They just have different goals in life! I put up audition posters in my room, and inspirational posters to boost me up everytime I feel that I can't live my dream because of my dad. My dad expects me to become a doctor or lawyer, but I don't share the same idea as him.He thinks that all entertainers can't study and only business men and doctors can taste success in life, but I don't agree! My dad doesn't even bother to sit down and listen to me singing or playing the guitar or piano, not even once. Sometimes when I want to practice my singing, I feel that he doesn't like it when I am always into singing, dancing or playing musical instru. He expects me to study 24/7. I know that my studies is important, but they cannot be the most important thing in life. But he thinks that studies is the only most important thing in life. I know that I'll get to do what I want when I'm 18, but by then if I go for either of the S.Korean Ent. auditions, I fear it'll be too late, cause there will still be training. I pray to God every night, to help me to show my dad my true passion for music, but that day has never come. To make him happy, I've been keeping my grades up, but he shows no interest in my talents. This lifelong dream of mine is what that keeps me going now, without music, or singing, my life is nothing. My mom is a spanish descant filipino, so she does understand. But my dad is pure chinese, and he still has those 'olden days' thinking. What should I do? Should I just give up on my lifelong dream which I treasure alot, or should I just work harder to convince my dad? more

Voting Question: What is the best way to learn guitar scales?

I learned the E pentatonic minor scale, but I have trouble soloing in other keys and moving the pattern up and down the fretboard. Is it worth learning the major scale and how to form scales with music theory? Do you guitar players learn scales based on notes or patterns? And does anyone have any advice on how I can better teach myself to solo in different keys? (It's kind of lame to keep asking people to play rhythm parts in E all the time) more

Voting Question: Learning Italian And Welsh-Looking For Friends To Practice With?

Hello, I've been studying Welsh for the past two months and Italian for the past year. I already know how to read and write in French. And I know how to speak Hebrew fluently, I can read and write very little. I'm trying to find people around my age that can help me practice or that I can help practice. I'm 18 years old, female, Jewish. I live in California. I'm trying to find either pen pals or people on Facebook that will interact with me. I love music of all kinds some of my favorites are All Time Low, Chiodos, The All-American Rejects, We The Kings, Paramore, Kings Of Leon, Muse, Phoenix, The Script, The Maine, The Devil Wears Prada, Dance Gavin Dance, MGMT, Rob Thomas, etc... I love to sew and knit and cook. I read everyday, all sorts of books. I'm also self-teaching myself how to play the guitar. I'm in my first year of college. I'm studying Business Law and I may possibly minor in English to become a writer or journalist or minor in music producing. I'm not trying to find a boyfriend or anything...just a friend either male or female. If you're interested, e-mail me with some info about yourself and I'll reply. (You should be able to e-mail me through this question without seeing my address.) Thanks for reading, hope to hear from someone. more

Voting Question: How do I get started REALLY playing the guitar?

I got my first guitar for my 8th birthday, and i'm 18 now. I have been playing it since then but all I do is look up tabs to songs I like and play off that. Getting them down pretty good isn't that hard for me, and I think that i'm experienced enough to take it to the next level. My friend whose a few months younger than me can play circles around me. He can sit there for hours and just make up the best sounding blues you could think of. He is in a band that is actually starting to take off pretty big right now. One of my other friends, his dad can do the same thing. I would love to be able to sit down and jam with them like I do, but not feel inadequate. How can I keep up with someone who knows his scales, knows his way around the guitar and can put his soul into his music? The trouble is that I don't know where to start. Music lessons are way too expensive and most of the time not worth it, and i'm not sure how to use the internet to find these things out for free. Do I start by learning scales? All of the scales? Until I can do them in my sleep? Do I just start messing around with my guitar until something that sounds good comes out? Can someone please help me? more

Voting Question: Can Someone Help Me With Writing Songs?

Hi I'm 17 and I have a sweet new telecaster and a pretty good band with my friends. I like rock, pop, punk rock, alternative, metal, hip hop, and indie among others so I like alot. I really wanna get creative and write like my favorite bands BUT: I've had some years of inconsistent lessons and I've tried singing for a previous band for a couple shows (not very well or confident). I can't sing well so I haven't got the strength or confidence to do it again...and I dunno where to begin writing a song... I have emotions but puting em on paper AND coming up with some chords and arrangments just kills me... I know I'm not a singer but is it possible to write some lyrics and melodies and maybe get a band where someone else can sing em eventually...? I always copy other bands and learn my favorite songs... I know a ton. I just wanna put all these influences to good use ya know? :P I just wanna know how I can get started without needing to have a big background on music theory or a perfect singing voice... I want someone to explain to me how to begin writing a song (with lyrics) from the level of an average rock guitar player with knowledge of some chords and some serious passion! What can I do?? Help and encouragement will be greatly appreciated. =] more

Voting Question: Question about a guy I'm crushing on and currently talking to. Does he like me or not? What else should I know?

Here it goes: So there is this guy who I'm talking to. We didn't know each other at all, had no classes together, or lunch together, but I always wanted to talk to him, he looked like a humble guy, someone different and not to talk about very good looking. So for the next week, my friends were trying to help me out by giving me motivation, because I AM a VERY shy girl when it comes to men. And it took one of my friends to go tell him without me knowing that i wanted to talk to him (which scared the living peaches out of me) and I thought he was just going to walk away from that, but actually did want to talk to me as well, but on that day I left early and he approached me two days later when he had school. He looked hella nervous before he came to talk to me, and looked like he was about to walk away but then he said my name and that's where it all started (I had added him on my facebook, which is how he knows my name). I mean we talked and he asked me for my number. he text me the next day and we text for 8-9 hours straight. And it went very well. And we don't text often, and I kinda like that. We usually talk in person during school, and I give him a laugh sometimes in our convos and we basically talk about anything. At first it was getting to know each other questions. I mean whenever we text or talk, they're long convos, and I really enjoy talking to him, I mean, I guess I kinda like him now :]] But sometimes he doesn't text me and I text him. The last time i spoke to him was on a Friday and it's Sunday now. He hasn't text me since, and sometimes I wonder if I should text him, but I don't want to be obsessive, like text him every god dam hour and annoying him. I mean, I know I would hate that. And sometimes I feel maybe he doesn't like me, but then again he looked for me and sat down with me this Friday and we spoke. He loves my art and photography. And found out I can sing and I'm learning the guitar. I also know he sings as well, has an rnb group and he's a very dedicated person. He loves his family, hard worker. We both want to be teachers as well. We love music, but our music tastes are different, because...well I'm "a rocker" (i listen to industrial, metal, melodic death metal, hardcore, rock.roll, funk rock etc) according to him and he's the "ghetto kid" (rnb, rap and "everything"". But we share our music and he likes some bands I like and know as well =]] We can both drive, but we have no car. But the BIG question is, how long should I wait until our first date? Who is supposed to ask who out on a date (cuz he is kinda shy, but so am I >.<). I've never had a boyfriend, never dated...so I'm kind of new to all this guy stuff. And he's the first guy I never knew who I got to know. Sometimes I think I'm doing things wrong, maybe I should try to text him more often? or I don't know. Sometimes he acts so normal. Is the fact that we still aren't making body contact ok?(e.g. hugging or kiss on the cheek). And remember, it's only been a week and a half we've been talking. So anything i missed or anything I should know? Please enlighten me.He also cut class just to talk to me on Friday, I didn't like that, but it felt pretty cool :) more

Resolved Question: Is playing guitar difficult? I don't underStand...?

I don't understand the basics of guitar playing. Do you just need to know chords and then strum them out for each song? Or do you have to be able to read sheet music? I'm confused. I would love to learn how to play. more

Voting Question: should i give up learning the electric guitar ?

i picked up a electric guitar. I learned how to get the metal sound with a distortion pedal. I learned how to tune the guitar in normal position "D" and down tuned "C". I am learning a lot of chords by heart the usual open chords and also all those power chords that are so often used in metal such as D5,B5 ect.. Yet i can't play guitar. My hand is not strong enough and i don't know how to make my left hand work correctly i mute strings that should not be mutted. It's frustrating. Lots of theory and little to no play at all. I know how to read music tabs too. I know there is a device available at music store especially to build strengh in the fingers I am inversting lots of money to do tuning on my guitar new bridge, new pots ect.. I would hate not actually learning the guitar. more

Resolved Question: i had to write about an inspiring band, is this good?

it's actually longer than it should be. i wrote it in German but i am also including the english version =] ----- Tokio-Hotel begeisterte mich wirklich obwohl viel. ============= Tokio hotel really inspired me though a lot. They gave me hope for living, (I mean, Scream (the German version) is the best feel good song!). Bill inspired me to really pursue my songwriting career, and now I’ve written over five songs! Tom really made me want to learn guitar even more, and now I’m composing music to my songs. Georg inspired me to have an awesome workout routine, and even though it doesn’t sound like much, I’ve had people ask me if I was a model! And Gustav gave me the gift of cool glasses! I really love Tokio Hotel. They are so sure of themselves, have no scandals, and are great role models. good? bad? i wrote this at 1:30 am so ill fix any grammatical errors tomorrow (tokio is spelt correctly though, that is how they spell it) more

Voting Question: What your opinion on what I should do?

I've been writing lyrics since I was 14 or 15 and I have the music for the lyrics stuck in my head wheneve I sing my songs, I never really paid much attention to it, but then I started writing more and more songs and I started wondering if maybe I should be a musician. I don't think I can sing but my friends all say I can, even the friend who was in Chior and gets solos, so I sang a few around my sister and she thinks they're real songs, but I have no way of playing the songs since the music for almost every one involves the acoustic guitar. I continued writing songs, and I still do today, but a few months ago I started feeling bored. I was so unhappy with being in college, taking classes I never wanted to take and learning things I will never use in my life. I was so depressed and frustrated. Then last month this voice popped in my head saying buy an acoustic guitar. Now I had thought about it in the past, but this voice never told me to do it before when I was thinking about getting one and when I thought about it, it made perfect sense. Since I'm in college on a grant or whatever, the extra money left over goes into a bank account, so I have around 2000 just sitting there since I already had the books for my classes. I have the time to sit down and learn to play since my schedule for college is pretty spreaded. I know I can dedicate myself to it, because anything I do involves music in some way, shape or form. My mom always tells me that I should do something I love and I've loved music for as long as I can remember. I would ask friends if I should carry out this though, but they'd say yes by default, so want complete strangers opinons. Should I listen to the little voice inside my head, buy the acoustic guitar and learn to play, or should I forget it and stick with college? more

Resolved Question: Which instrument should I learn how to play?

I really can't choose... I was thinking either Acoustic Guitar or Keyboard since I have them, or possibly Drums, since I had a set when I was like 4-8 years old, but then we sold them... I have never taken any instrument lessons, but I really want to learn how to play something. Music seems like much more of productive way to spend my time than doing what I normally do, so that is why I want to learn. But also, it would be really cool to learn how to play something more obscure such as an Accordion or Flute. Many of the bands I listen to have unique sounds in the background, so maybe if you knew what MeWithoutYou played, maybe you could answer with one of theirs...? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks. :) more

Voting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?

I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Sorry for the really long wall of text!I know a lot of guitar chords already. Not just the like seven essenial ones but several advanced onesand power chords, what I have trouble with is single noes and barre chords. Also, recommending thins because they'll take me farther if I play it in a band doesn't really make a difference, I already both play drums and sing in a band, I wouldn't be playing any of these other instruments in a band, I'd only use them to compose the songs for the other band members. more

Resolved Question: Have you ever taken any non-credit college level courses just for fun?

Typically, these would be done at your local community college. I know a lot of retired people and people bored during the summer take non-credit classes at my local community college when they're specifically using the for fun reason. I know there's other reasons to take non-credit classes, such as professional development, but I want to know what you've taken for fun and why!I'm taking a non-credit guitar class this semester. There's no point to me taking the more expensive for credit option because music has absolutely nothing to do with my major. Japanese is counting as my "fine arts" credits. I'm already paying for once a week guitar lessons from a teacher one on one. It might be interesting to also get (far cheaper!) lessons once a week in a small class setting. It'd definitely help me learn faster! more
