Learn Guitar On Line Questions asked

Resolved Question: How to read time signatures?

I've decided to learn to read music after a few years on guitar and I am just completely stuck with time siginitures. I'm learning out of 'Music theory for Dummies' and honestly I am baffled, the book gives me a 3/8 time erm... line of music?..... what does it mean, ive looked it up and people say stuff like "the top is number of beats, the bottom is how long the beats are". The Dummies book says "the 8th note gets the beat".... wha?!?!?! I cannot understand it, how does 3/8 sound any diffirent to 3/3... i have no idea. Thanks. more

Open Question: I need help with proofreading?

Im not fluent in english. Can someone pls help me proofread my process paragraph? How To Play A Guitar Guitar is a wonderful instrument and its more approachable than others. Its composed of a body with a neck to which the strings are connected. It can either be played by plucking or strumming. Although learning to play a guitar is a challenge and usually takes time, by simply following these steps, playing guitar can be learned much faster. 1. First, choose the right guitar for you. There are two primary families of guitars: acoustic and electric. Choosing a guitar might depend on the genre of what you’d like to play. 2. Second, learn how to tune a guitar. Learning how to tune a guitar can greatly improve how you differentiate different kinds of pitches, tones, and scales. One can tune a guitar by ear and also by using an automatic tuner. 3. Third, learn how to read and play chords. learning how to read chords will help you learn the correct positioning of the fingers in order to play properly. Chords can be played by holding the number that represents the fret numbers which can be found on the lines in the tab that represents the string numbers. 4. Finally, learn how to strum a guitar. Make sure that your arm is at the top of the guitar body then gently strum the string and make sure that all strings are ringing clearly. If the strings are strummed too hard, it might produced an undesirable tone. Also when strumming the strings, keep in mind that the picking motion should come from a rotation of your wrist instead of forearm. If you follow these four simple steps, learning how to play a guitar should be a piece of cake. more

Voting Question: My audition piece for a high school of the arts?

So, I am auditioning for creative writing at a high school of the arts. Is it any good? I looked around the room. Teagan was crying, and Chester was holding onto my leg, refusing to let go. Sarah and Elisabeth were hugging each other in the wooden doorway, not wanting me to leave, either. Should I leave? I had no choice, I had to. I was chosen. I looked at Margaret, the runner of this home. The shade of her red-rimmed eyes matched her bright red curls. She was saying something, her lips moving, but I couldn’t hear anything. My thoughts were being screamed, as if people were in my head, like a television sitcom. I looked around once more, wondering where Luke was. He became my best friend here, and I needed one last goodbye. A hug from yesterday wasn’t good enough. “Ginny, dear, it’s rime to go,” my new mother told me, pulling softly at my sleeve, causing another round of tears from Teagan. “Okay,” I sighed, picking up my tan suitcase, decorated with teal flowers. It was my real mothers. I looked around this place. Sure, it wasn’t huge, and sure, these people weren’t my real siblings. Foster home isn’t too bad though, at least until you are chosen. You have to leave the ones you have learned to love. I remember meeting Luke, which made my heart hurt, knowing he won’t be back in time. We were both first graders, and he took my animal cracker. So, I took his. And you know that saying, if you like a girl, you tease her? Well, that’s what all the other first graders thought, so they teased us, and we became pariahs. The beginning of a now ending friendship. I shuffled my feet towards the door, the twins looking up at me. Their eyes shooting out messages, begging I stayed. That I told that couple with the new Mercedes out front to beat it, visit another home. Take someone else away. Or, maybe I was over thinking it. After all, they were only seven. Maybe they just wished that I could stay to play house with them. I looked at them, taking in their blonde ringlets, and their illuminating green eyes. Why wouldn’t they choose them? They’re so young, and I’m fifteen already. What would they want with me, if I would be there for three years? With a final hug, I walked out of their, refusing to cry. I watched as my new father, Roger, took my bag and put it in the trunk. I opened the backseat door, and settled in. I looked out the window, at my old family standing on the big porch. I looked up, at the windows lining the top floor, stopping my sight on a face. It was Luke. I watched as his eyes widened, and he dashed to his dresser, coming back with a piece of loose leaf. It was a sign. “Goodbye, Ginny, I’ll miss you!” It said in bolded blocky lettering. One tear slid down my cheek as we pulled away. “Which room is mine?” I asked, eager. From the outside this house was big. The inside, huge. “Upstairs, first on your right,” Roger said, chuckling at my eager face as I grabbed my suitcase and dashed upstairs. I poked my head into the room, seeing black and red walls, and a huge bed. There was a balcony next to a desk with a Mac computer on it. This was amazing. There was also a walk-in closet, my own bathroom, and a bookshelf, stuffed with books. This was heaven. I unpacked my things into the dresser drawers, which consisted of three pairs of jeans, two sweatshirts, and six shirts. I placed my guitar case carefully in the corner, when I heard Roger yell. It was dinnertime. I skipped downstairs, ready to start my new life. more

Voting Question: Poll: Have you heard the song "Stairway to Heaven"? And the solo?

Learned it note for note, and HAVE had it in my back pocket since the summer of 1977 when my cousin originally laid it out for me in like a 3 part process; and it worked really good I think...I don't normally give guitar lessons; however, in '97, someone that caught us while making a living on the road,,approached me and asked IF, I would be interested in teaching him...22year old dude from Chicago,,,name J.T..(We are still friends to this day),, but anyway,,, I didn't think he was ready really and I was actually right; but when I got home to south lake tahoe, Ca where AM not living at this particular time; but usually DO, as it is my home, and have lived there just up from the clubs @ the Nevada/California state line...So,, after a couple of weeks,,I get a call from J.T..who thought he'd move on out to Tahoe.. Big change for him being from the south part of chicago...but he had a love of the blues..and my cousin who IS a blues man..(Lonnie Mack)..Lonnie did make a regular stop at "Legends"..(Buddy's joint), and JT saw us there,,,although, he just happend upon me, at a booth, foolin' with someone's accoustic,,,and trying to get it to take a tuning,,and stay... So, I was using "Stairway to heaven" as a "control"...and he heard me..and I CAN imitate J. Page's version And one of my own,,and have actually been doing it since high school in the mid '70's when I'd play the whole tune,,,about 12 or 13 minutes long when laid down properly,,,and sang with the right "Feel",,etc...I have actually officially taught that song to about 5 people in the last 30+ years,,,and the last one WAS J.T,,,and he paid me a total of $750.00, but I had to give him a whole new way of aproaching the instrumant,,,And "Undo" some really bad habits that he'd picked up somewhere;;So, we spent a good 3 weeks 'De-Programming" his incorrect aproach to the guitar in general,,,as it prevented him from being able to "Move on" alone..and teach himself stuff, and he couldn't grasp what changes, and how subtle, and chilly the whole mellow thing was, when it came to getting his abiltiy to play with a, or as part of, maybe is what I meant to say.. of a Unit...or team,,,and if enough "Nare-Do-Wells" showed up in the same place, then maybe even a quick "Thow-it-together band"...and I even layed out the basics or the basic Nashville picker's # system that they,,them..and I'm not ashamed to say I myself have better success with that old number way of dealing with other players..it's just a better way... You know what i'm talking about,,??? Like if we didn't know each other; but we could still just walk on each other's bandstand and earn a night's work because of the # system...?? Like,,I turn to you and simply say: this song's an Old Merle Haggard thing called "Footlights",,,(for the "Chance that you Might already know of the song..what it sounds like, or anything at all that could help...),,,so,,let's say you say "I'm not a walking, fossil steve,,and I have never heard of your ancient monk's chant......So,, we're lucky 'cause even though I don't actually read music near well enough to be of any practical use when entertaining for paychecks and percs....BUT..I can look at you and even if it's noisy and wildly busy in the club...we will be fine, even without ever having practiced together at any time in the past..I'll say,,,"Merle's Footlights"..in "D",,, go 1, 4, 5, with a 7th,,,get "Out of the way" for a lead break that my Telecaster Master over there's going to ease into from HIS que, that's coming from Bob,,"Grizzly" Smith,,,my Pedal Steel Guitar genious...(Watch out though; as this only applies with Bob, during actual sets throughout the night, and the genious thing will go away later,,,and the opposite effect replaces the other...Anyway,,,after the Guitar's lead break,,there's one verse, and one more run at the chorus..however?? just as Steve wraps his solo,,we're going to modulate on full step...alright with that so far??? Remember,,we started in "D"..right?? So,,You must also either be a, or become a,,singer of harmony parts,,as I'm not going to take bread out of our pockets just because one of us can't sing harmony...You'll find that to be the case in virtually every situation, where there's a club owner, and pickers, that do it as thier sole form of making a living.. So,,back to the quick rundown for the opening number of the nights 3rd set.. after the lead break, there's a full step modulation, You sing 5th part with me on the very last 2 lines of the song...And just follow, and watch my eyes,,,and within' a week or so we'll sound like we've been playing with one another for many years... Right on/??? Anyway...that's pretty much what J.T got for the "Really just sybolic" 500 bones..(I always get something out of teaching a pretty much of complete beginner what I've been toiling with since the summer of '68, when I was 7 years old,,and got my 1st electric guitar at the "Flea Market" in San Jose', CA,,, for 20 bucks,,,An old "Kay",,and an old SearsSilvertone amp..1/12,,and almost no controls, of any kind... So,,I've got "some" experience under my belt that does tend to make things easier not for me only,, but everbody leans on me from time to time, and It 'doesn't bother me man.. Who do I think I am anyway??? You know what I'm sayin'.. we're all in it to sound FANTASTIC, and for the drunks, and customers,,,to drink more,,and more,, that's what we're technically there for...it helps to remember that..And if your thinking "Oh **** that,,I don't want to deal witht that ****...here's the thing that real music player's must face sooner or later..and that's "Do you want to do this for your weekly bread,,,pay your bills, and send the kids to school, etc..??? Or,, do you want to work at K-Mart,,and meet us on Friday & Saturday ONLY??? Well,, then sorry dude; gotta let you go on your way..because we've chosen to do this for more money than Sears can pay us for selling new tires,,or working at some "Jive-Turkey" music store,,pedaling stripedaling strings and giving away picks to Johnny the Trombone student that hangs out at the store, pounding on one of the Drum Kits until we all want to choke the little turd,,and his trombone... I choose to show up for 4, maybe 5 sets a night,,,4,,maybe 5 nights a week.. Scale's usually around $500.00 a week these days; although I make Much Much, more when we hit the road,,,,that's a whole nuther trip,,,Are you through with this email now??? Steve with the Stairway to Heaven Licks, & tricks... elcamaro72@hotmail.com Bear in mind man; I wasn't able to read your whole email...and took you to be pretty much a novice learner young player..No offense...I came back and used the "Edit" thing on here to help me explain why this letter is so ,well,,the way it is...I was worried that you wouldn't follow my "Jive talkin',,which I tend to do..(I still call pickers "Cats" sometimes... I know I am a dinosaur, and that I'm one for the road... but,,that's show biz,,,Right?? One thing..zzzwhy I"mOne thing..zzzwhy I"m back here...I have been laying that Stairway lick..well, all the licks,,of all the different parts of the song as it winds it's way all the way to "And she's buying a Stairway.......to...hea.....vennnnnn/// ziiiiiiiiiipzaaaaaaaaaaptidahdahdaydadad… whatever..I'm kind of "Bozo'd" tonight man... but; my 1st reaction when I read your whole email was "NO, NO,,it's NOT that hard man,,, however..even in your email,,you remind me that '1977 was a little over 30 years ago,,,,and once the "Cat was out of the bag"...that I knew that particular tune, the WAY I did,, well, you can imagine what happens next... before you know it the same clown is standing on a cocktail table howling "FREEBIRD" over and over; and I usually give in to that request as well. As it took Almost as long to learn the proper way to deliver that beautiful song without wrecking it... "Less is more" if you can dig what I'm shoveling on that line of thought..?? It's always been about the quality for me..and my family..of which almost all play for thier bread. And have as long as my memory's started forming...so,,,"FreeBird" was a "Must Learn" for me back then too.. BUT,,I have some how lost my "Feel",,and I can't get a decent "Freebird" out of the old wooden box without a month or so to "Woodshed" ...all of them for that matter... I'm zipped man... email me IF perhaps you want to discuss any other musical interests's ,,as I have a few of my own lately and not a soul that has the foggiest idea what I'm "Lippin'" about.. Later man! Halsey... more

Resolved Question: Can a beginning guitar student start on an electric?

I saw a band this weekend that made me go home and compulsively buy an electric guitar on-line...The female lead guitarist was just that inspirational, however, I don't play and never have. And so, I have this electric guitar due to be delivered any day now, and I'm wondering if I've made a mistake. Should I have gotten an acoustic, or can I learn just as well on an electric? I haven't bought an amp yet, but I have my eye on a Marshall Mini Amp that I can use with earphones. Does that sound like a good start, amp wise? Well, if this doesn't work out (though I will certainly give it a good try), at least I didn't spend a lot. more

Voting Question: What do you think of my story so far?

This is not the absolute beggining of te story, this is after they meet. How they meet is that she was dw at the pond by her house ( they own a vineyard, they are rich) and she brought her guitar, but she dropped her pick on accident and Will was walking by and saw it and gave it to her. Then she told him how she wasnt good at playing theguitar and wanted to learn, so she snuck out at night to have him teach her but she fell asleep while he was. So now they are at the carnival, and what will does is keep an object from each night they are together. In the first day they met, he saved a dandelion that he put inher hair, he second day he saved the stuffed animal he won her that she let him keep. Thats why he kept it, btw. Thats as far as I got, so read my story so far, and if there are any improvment i can make, please say so! Thanks! We entered the carnival, seeing people who were most likely tourists, for there were many this time of year in Northern California. I saw a family of five, two parents and their 3 kids holding balloons, and a bear, and a small red stuffed tiger which was probably won at one of the games. They all showed content expressions. There were a bunch of couples I could spot, all seeming a few years older then Will and I. A few girls my age walked by giggling and eyeing Will. He gave a blushed smile in the other direction. I gave them a look that told them Will was all mine, when in reality we were just friends. Will finally broke the silence in between him and I. “Amelia, what do ‘ya wanna do? There’s plenty o’ games. Rides? You wanna go on a ride?” “I don’t mind. Maybe we should play some games first, let the lines settle down. If we stay that long.” He didn’t quite process what I said, and it took him a second after he looked around the carnival area searching for a good game to fully do so. “Over here.” He grabbed my hand, leading me to a game booth. It was one of those booths were they lined up and organized ten cans in a triangular form, and you gave one dollar for two throws, which I thought was just like giving your money away. For me, at least, who could barely run in a straight line and be expected to be able to throw a ball and hit down ten cans from ten feet away. The booth was decorated with lights, inviting the sun to completely dissolve into the black star-filled summer sky. There were stuffed animals posing as prizes which were hung up on the frame of the booth, and at the back. A sign said that if you hit all cans down with only one ball, you win one of the smaller stuffed prizes. And if you get lucky and knock the cans down both trys, you win one of the bigger prizes. Will let go of my hand when he was giving the person running the booth one dollar, and the person running it gave him his first ball. “Watch me, Amelia. Ima knock ‘em down my first try.” I must admit I liked Will. He was confident, and easily pleased me. “Alright Will, but don’t be upset if you don’t knock them down your first-” He hit them all down, with his first try. Impressive, a boy with a good arm. I laughed because I was so incredibly impressed, and I had no way of explaining why. Guys usually figured having a reputation of dating nine million girls impressed a girl. I don’t know about all the other girls, but it sure did not impress me. I say that from experience. Guys were something I constantly worried about, why I couldn’t find Mr.Right, and why when I thought I did it all ended up with me disappointed. This is simply sub-stage one. Stage one would come when we, if we even did, started dating. Will passed my expectations on a first date with flying colors. Sub-stage one was the stage of friendship, before we dated. Stage one was when we get along so well, I feel like this is the one, and then he fails stage two, three, and four. I had a feeling maybe Will would ace my standards. But, then again, my standards don’t call for much. Will, I had a feeling, would pass up my standards, with more than 100 percent. But we’d just have to wait. My laughter was unusually filled with my amazement in him fulfilling what he said he would do. His eyes shun with the sentiment that he had accomplished what he said he would, in front of me. He laughed as well, and proved me wrong. But I liked being proven wrong when it came to him. “I told ya, Amelia! I got it! You wanna bet Ima knock down the cans my second try, too?” This time I thought I would just agree with him and not be proven wrong. But I loved the look he had, and the amazement I felt so much, I had to doubt him agI'm only 14, thats probably why I have a load of grammatical errors...And Ive never actully writtn a book before, but Ive one many writing awards so I figured it would be fun to... more

Resolved Question: Can religion or culture hold you back from doing what you truly want to do ?

Isn't it often the case that religion and culture hold you back from doing what you REALLY want to do? Culture more so than religion.. I just mentioned that in there too because the two often go together hand in hand and many people get the two muddled because the lines are so blurred. I would love to learn how to play guitar, I'd like to move out, I'd like to travel on my own..and many other things. But I can't. Because in our 'culture' "good girls" don't do this. They look pretty and listen to their parents ad dont stay out after dark and become doctors and lawyers and marry cute rich guys and are lovely to everyone and suck up and are just GOOD. :/ I feel like I'm being suffocated. I can front like I'm the best daughter in the world with the best of them but right now, I'd rather just be ME and feel guilty. Does anyone else get this? more

Resolved Question: Songs with a good piano, bass, and vocals?

For school every month we need to learn 3 songs, 2 of those songs our teacher picks and we get to pick one song. We have to learn how to play the song on all of the instruments we know. I know how to play bass (bass guitar), piano, and I am a good singer. I usually sing alto but I can sing higher sometimes (although I don't prefer to). Does anybody have good song ideas for me? I was thinking maybe Don't Stop Believing by Journey. It has a cool bass line and piano but the vocals don't sound very good with my voice. more

Resolved Question: Can anyone help me name this song? I have all the lyrics?

This was found in my received files, and I really like it and want to learn it on guitar. It sounds country, and there is a male singing voice. I think it might be called "I want you just as you are" because that is the main repetitive line. Here are the lyrics: Hey butterfly, Why you cryin now? Does it all seem that uncertain? Would you imply That ive been thinkin somehow You and me, we just aint workin You thought I wanted freedom But without you Im a king with no kingdom cause i love you and your so beautiful and I want you just as you are when you feel alone like your second best to the girls on the magazine covers with your head hung low like youve failed a test cause you think i want what you see in others you cant see what im seeing cause if you did then youd start believin that i love you and your so beautiful and i want you just as you are if you dare, well share this lifetime for just as long as you care enough to try butterfly when we get old and weve spent our youth and our jouneys all but completed and youve been told and youve heard the truth? and the words so many times repeated but the day i started livin was the same day your heart started giving in to the fact i love you and your so beautiful and i want you just as you are i want you just as you are I want you just as you are. Voting Question: Ladies: Why is it my ex-gf's getting all the benefit of the doubt, yet if I did this (the male) I'd be beaten?

Ladies: Why is it my ex-gf's getting all the benefit of the doubt, yet if I did this (the male) I'd be beaten? I met a woman last summer. We hit things off great. Then a couple of months down the line, she did not want to meet any of my friends. She would pause in silence if I said I missed her, even though we said we loved each other frequently, and she had teased/hinted around about the possibility of us moving in together. I met her parents, friends several times, but yet she never made an attempt or shared any interest in meeting or hanging out with any of mine. Now this wasn't for a year, we dated for 4 months, but the last two we were hardly intimate at all. I know she was divorced, no children. I know that she told me that her ex-husband became very controlling and paranoid she was cheating on him which she clearly wasn;t. I believed her and still do that she had no choice and she's not a bad person. In fact, I don't think she's a bad person at all. Just that it wasn't meant to work out....towards the end of the summer, we were invited to her friend's wedding and there she hardly acknowledged me, only really talked to me about holding her chapstick and keys and didn't notice I was gone at one point. She also didn't want to dance because of "her knee" or some other made up excuse. She was always honest with me, I was honest with her too, I never cheated on her or even tried.......I was good to her, not perfect but good...... I decided to break up with her. I didn't know what the problem was, but her not showing any interest to get to know me further, and things like that......plus her blowing me off at that wedding---I felt it was time for me to move on. I broke up with her over the phone and she said "Ok" like no problem. Enthusiastic. "I really didnt have time for a relationship anyway lately". Oh, that's great. Keep in mind she was the first gf I had since college, 4 years ago because my last one made me swear off women. That previous one was the first girl I been with and her and I had been friends before but she got upset that I was schmoozing her and was being cold to her after I learned she made up lies about me. Then she started calling me and leaving messages and making things up. And told people intimate things about me to embarass me, and flirted with my old roommate, someone she downright disliked because he made her feel uncomfortable, just to be mean. As far as my recent ex went, we talked, she im'd me on facebook and said that she was sorry for being "a little quiet" at the wedding, but that the time was the anniversary of her own, and reminded her too much of her own failed marriage and I know that her ex husband had been harassing her. She said she still wanted to be friends, we both agreed to it actually. but one time we talked on aim and she told me she had been dating guys, but nothing serious. Not like I asked, but then I asked her about what her family or friends thought of me and said "I gotta go---you're stressing me out". And left! She literally said "This is one of the reasons I broke up with you, you overanalyze and worry about everything, and i don;t need that right now". First off, she was right! But I obviously was doing something she liked if she put up with it...... Oh, and didn't I break up with her? It made me feel she wanted this all along? Why was she taking credit for the break up when I broke it off with her first? So then within a month or so, she'd ask me how christmas was and stuff, and asked for my phone number to come over and play guitar hero with her. I gave it to her. To be polite. My relationship experience wasn't vast, it wasn't everyday I was still friendly with an ex........but I was, Then a couple of weeks later she was saying hi to me on aim and facebook and I really haven't had any interest. Now she has someone else. While I remain probably one of the 776 single people on Facebook's 1,000,000+ user base. Correct me if Im wrong, but if I did this to her, wouldn't you all kill me? more

Resolved Question: Metal songs on guitar to scream over?

I've been playing electric guitar for a year and a half, and I'm pretty good. I'm into more modern metal stuff (think Trivium, BFMV, In Flames, etc.) and I've recently started doing backing vocals too (not singing - I can't seem to stay in tune. I do screaming, similar to the afore-mentioned Trivium or BFMV). Can anybody give me some songs to learn that have screamed vocals and moderately difficult guitar parts? Preferably from a band that has a guitarist that does backing vocals, because I don't want the main vocal line of someone who does nothing else, because it's likely to be more difficult than one that's sung/screamed by someone playing guitar too. Also, any advice on how to do this better would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Need help understanding some guitar chords, anyone willing to help?

I am learning guitar, and using tab/chord guitar websites to familiarize myself with different chord positions. It's working very well and I'm learning songs very quickly this way, until I come to the tricky chords. I am using Ultimate-Guitar.com; on this website you just hover over the chord names and it shows you the position. Once in a while (more often, actually), I encounter these chords that have a line going through the first fret. Sometimes it goes through all six strings, sometimes five, sometimes three. An example would be an F chord. It has a line going through the first fret, then the other positions are third string/second fret, 4th string/third and 5th string/third. I used a video to learn the F chord, and it looks like I just hold the first three strings of the first fret. My question to you is: in general what does this line mean? I'd like to know how to read these notes so I don't have to look up a video every time I come to one of them (and they come up a lot). Does this make any sense? I'm still learning the lingo. Thanks for reading!Prohad: that was my first assumption, but the F has the line going through every string on fret 1, and the video says only hold down first 3 strings, and I played it and it sounds right. more

Resolved Question: My parents aren't real! Please read all of this, Parents are plotting against me. Yahoo your my only hope.?

I am 15 years old. My parents wont let me see a psychiatrist, please read, you guys are my last hope. My mom, completely insane, she and my dad are the most stubbornest people i know in my life. when she organizes the house she often misplace my things that i neatly piled, id ask her nicely where she had put them and then she just completely spazzes, which causes me to raise my voice, and then she finds an excuse to go apeshit, breaking and throwing all my belongings, like books and guitars! I'm tired of all this bull. I'm tired of yahoo answers not understandingm this person she is 5'3 small like a mouse and yells like a bitch, multi layered like yoko ono, and can't speak english even though she has lived in canada for 7 years. I mean like why cant she be a normal mom, she doesnt know when to let go and she doesnt want to listen to her family's personal problems.. she'd only want to emphatize her own. Every dinner, she would blurt out that she is suffering from a sickness, she would say this in her native indonesian language : "Mom, is suffering from a sickness, i am not going to tell you guys what it is.My heart is weak." And we continue eating our soup, she says it to get empathy of her fake self. I mean like, aren't real parents not supposed to tell their children that they're dying even if theyre not... because wouldnt that scare the kids?!! Like WTF mom are you trying to make us feel bad and fake like you!?!? I think my dad knows she acts stupid like this but he doesnt say anything just to convey his stubborness. Plus, whenever i try to aware them of the REAL world, of gays, deaths, drugs, and of the FACTUAL world of sciences, history, literature, THEY WOULD IGNORE IT they would just make a stupid face and look like their not paying attention. playing with their glasses when i am explaining. Esp my dad. but THEY DO ALL THIS SUBTLELY, so that it would look legit that they LOVE ME (when they are fakes) which drives me insane. I looked through her doc records she only has stupid diarrhea problems, and shes obviously exxagerating herself to get pity. Then a little after she would fake cry and then a minute later she SPAZZES and starts throwing stuff breaking everything and yells IT"S BETTER THAT WE RATHER HAVE NOTHING THAN TO BE SINFUL along the lines.. then she specifically targets at me making me the bad guy. And everytime she and my dad have a problem she makes me the root ALWAYS!. Arent parents supposed to tell their kids its not their fault when mommy and daddy are fighting?! Aren't parents suppose to care about their kids social life at school?! Rather than keeping them inside never letting go UNLESS THE CHILD SUGGESTS IT? Aren't parents supposed to BE INITIATIVE and care about their child's progression in preparing for the future??! - Oh they say they care bout that sort of thing because they put me into a good school and schedules me on time but they dont give a shit that i am having learning problems and that i am going insane vise versa their plotting behaviour of driving me insane . They moan about paying lots of money for my school, all they care about is me not to be late so they dont get ripped off! Not how i am doing. Especially my dad. My mom realizes that that itself wouldnt be legit, but she cannot stop her ways of not caring about my progression , so she always fake saying that dont be late so .. you dont waste your time for learning EVEN THOUGH SHE DOESNT EVEN KNOW WHAT MY LEARNING LEVEL IS , OR WHERE IM AT INTELLECTUALLY. STUBBORN B I A TCH. And if it wasnt for my ideas of tutoring me and putting me in music lessons or kickboxing, i would be the most pathetic kid in the world, with good education and no social sportive musical life, and awareness. because they would just put me in a school and be ignorant that only being put in a school itself would be good enough for my kid to success and represent his good parents. What should i do? This has been happening all through my life until now when im smart enough to think words and completely realize that 'unfairness' feeling i get daily in the Grade 1 through 4 years. Weekly ive tried getting around in a circle with them and telling that they are driving me insane, diagnosing them their problems.. and how it could be fair for all of us. But THEY WONT LISTEN dad would just play with his glasses + look around and mom would revert the topic into how bad a person i am, like judging every sin i have committted ever since i was born, but they do it subtlely making sure that they are not saying that i was a mistake so to fake and legitimately love me. They just want their own stubborn standards! Everytime i tell my mom to be a normal american mom she goes "OKAY FINE I WILL GET DRUNK EVERYDAY AND YOU WILL NOT GO TO SCHOOL! NO GUITAR TOO!" I am going insane please help me i need somebody not just ..anybody. more

Resolved Question: Parents: Would You Treat Your Child This Way?

Hi Yahoo'ers! I was eating lunch in a cafe the other day with a friend of mine and it reminded me of an incident that occurred last summer. To fill you in on my story, I play bass in a band. I also give bass lessons. One day, I stopped in the cafe for lunch and I had my bass with me. I should also tell you that I wear a lot of vintage clothing, especially when I'm playing with the band. I was wearing a floral print skirt with a teal strapless top. I also have my bass tattooed on my back, to the right of my left shoulder blade. It goes vertically down my back and is big and beautiful (in fact, I'd just had it re-touched). Well there was a woman in the cafe with her daughter. You know the type, bleach-blonde hair, collagen lips, and I'm guessing she had a boob job too. The type that treats her kid as an accessory (I call those types "Trixie McYuppiemom"). She was yakking on her cel phone and totally ignoring the daughter. The daughter was about 9 years old, would be my guess. So the daughter came over to me and started asking me questions. She told me my dress was pretty and so was my tattoo. She began asking questions about my guitar too. She asked how I liked playing guitar and she said she likes music. I told her, "Well maybe someday you might be interested in learning to play." Just then the mom looked up from her cel phone, ran over and yanked the kid by the arm. She yanked her right out of the cafe. Since my table was by the window, I could see her yelling at the kid (with the cel phone still by her ear, mind you). Then she gave me a dirty look and pulled the kid away. So a couple of days later, again while carrying my bass, I noticed this woman sans child go into the cafe. I followed her in and in the ordering line, she again gave me a dirty look. I told her, "You know, if for one second you'd pay attention to your daughter instead of your g-d cel phone, you might discover she's interested in music lessons. Here's my card!" And I pressed my card in her hand and walked out. Now I'm not a parent (I'm married but I'm unable to have kids). But if I was, I certainly would not treat my child that way. I've had kids approach me and ask me about my bass a couple of times before, but the parent patiently reminded the child not to talk to strangers. The parent also apologized to me for the child bothering me. So parents, what do you think? Would you treat your child this way? Ignore her, then yank her by the arm? How do you react if you see your child talking to a stranger? How do you treat the stranger? Would you treat your child differently if he/she approached a female like me vs. a male? Also, everyone, what do you do if a child you do not know starts talking to you?To Phillip: Did you ever see the movie "Parenthood"? Keanu Reeves (of all people) has the best line in it--"You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, to drive a car - hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father." I'd change that to say, "...let any idiot able to reproduce be a parent". more

Resolved Question: How would I get an acting/singing agent?

Have you ever heard the quote, "Look for the dream that keeps coming back. It's your destiny." Well, I've been thinking a lot for about this end half of the year, and I've realized everytime I see someone on TV or in a Music Video, i just get this burning feeling inside me. I know it's what I need to do. Or at least give it a shot. I am 15 years old, and a freshman in highschool. I've gotten call backs before for two different agencies, but the money they were asking from us, was insane. And they weren't even guaranting any work. So, my mother told me both times, they were probably scams. I've decided the best way to do this, is to get an agent. Do they cost any money? And how do I find one? I was just recently casted in my highschool's play as a lead. It's a play one of the seniors wrote with our drama department manager. I will be playing the role of Natalie (lead lead lead) hah best friend. I am in every scene, with many lines, so I will call it a lead. Or close to it. :) I play accoustic guitar, and have been told by my friends and family that they adore my voice. I've been compared to Demi Lovato's. But of course, I am just a shadow in her fame! And I have been learning piano for several months now. This will be the start of actual acting experience in this play, so I am very blessed to have been cast. I also have been dancing since I was four. I would love to be a musician, but who am I to say that I'm good enough. I do have confidence to stand in front of adults, from those past meetings and auditions. But It would be easier to be taught to act, than to sing. So the bottom line is, I would hope these talents God gave me will get me somewhere. I am not walking into this wanting to go straight to Disney, like lots of other girls my age. I know small local commericals will be a start. I live in Colorado, and just am not sure where to send my headshots and all of that. I am completley cluless about finding an agent. Please help me? Thank you, God Bless<3 more

Voting Question: Should I learn electric guitar chords first, or begin learning easy riffs?

Hey, yeah I just got a guitar around a month ago, and I love it. It's an Epiphone Les Paul Standard (not that that matters I guess), and I just bought some cheap Line 6 spider 3 15watt amp. Anyways, back to my question, I've come to realize "learning guitar" is such a general statement. I've been practicing all the open chords I know, and I can play them pretty well about 80-90% of the time, but I can't move between them as fast as I'd like to. It normally takes me a few seconds to switch from say an A chord to a G (both majors)..I also just recently picked up the tab for Sunshine of Your Love, because I've heard that's an easy song to play. I've almost got that riff down to normal speed, but not quite...I'm wondering is it worth it to keep practicing switching between the chords and get them down to a speed that's more fluent, or should I keep on learning new songs, and the "chord movement speed" will come naturally? Help please :) more

Resolved Question: How do I Learn to Stand Up to Myself When Dealing with ASSHOLE STRANGERS? :(?

Hi, I hardly ever encounter people being rude to me. In fact, most people are extremely nice to me... but today I was changing my major and adding a minor (I'm a Sophomore, so haven't started my major or minor classes yet ^__^) when I was trying to figure out who was in line to speak with an academic adviser and who was waiting to hand in papers. I asked until this one guy and he was like, "I'm not in line, knock yourself out." He seemed really pessimistic, but I didn't care. I had to turn in two signed documents to change my major/add a minor and gave it to the man at the desk. He told me, "I told you to give this to THAT building xD" and I was like, "Oops i forgot ^__^;;; Thank u!" Then I noticed the appointment sign-up sheet and noticed a few names randomly down the list were crossed out as well as the names going down the list and asked how to tell who was next. I realized immediately that the random crossed out names were people who decided not to wait and left...so I know I didn't come off too bright...(I'm hyper creative so I'm MUCH more right-brained than left-brained so my logic isn't the best :/) But here's the thing... That guy who I mentioned earlier was like, "WOOOOW! hahaha" in a really mean voice. I thought that was really rude of him because he doesn't even know me -_- I wish I were good at standing up for myself, but I didn't even know what I could say. From 6th-part of 9th grade I was picked on for being ugly and I wouldn't defend myself, and although now I am good looking and people are actually eager to help me...I don't know how to stand up for myself in situations like above. Please help me!!! When high school ended, I decided not to make gang/crime related friends and to just focus on anime/videogames/school/guitar...but now I have nobody to help beat people up for me ^__^ Any advice would be great! Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: The difference between Electric and acoustic guitar?

The songs on the soundtrack to Walk the Line, are the solos in acoustic or electric guitar because I am a beginner , I bought an acoustic guitar and tried picking to one of the solos just by watching someone do the solo to "Get Rythm". not much sound ( of course i don't even know if i need too hold cords in order too pick .... (i haven't learned a thing about picking opposed to the chords I'm practicing) I know it's just the beginning but, are their different strings to buy for soloists or is just the tuning in the strings that make the difference? .....OR is it that they used electric for the movie, just from what i thought, Cash wasn't using electric in his band....????Even "Thats alright mamma" and the other Elvis track in the movie, lol... I think it was "Milk Cow Blue's" something like that....Sounded like Electric guitar too me, as high as some of the pitches were ...What's a telecaster? It may have been an electric guitar cause i seen that they were made in 1931, Cash was doing his thing in the 50's. BTW i was just playig around w/ the guitar was't expecting too be able too play the solo right off, Great advice from everyone though, because, each awnser told me something I DIDN' T know..... If I could I'd give everyone best awnser.I have STEEL strings, another question??? what sound's better, heavy or light strings because I have VERY LIGHT STRINGS.MAN!!!! Thanks guys so much, I've never asked a question on Awnsers and gotten a complete list of thurough awnsers...EACH and every one, awesome, It's just inspired me beyond belief too keep at this guitar, as complicated as it me seem, I refuse to give up on it, I see the most intelligent people play this instrument....Wow, THANKS GUYS... more

Voting Question: What is the best free music making software?

I'm looking for some sort of software that will allow me to create the tunes that I want. You know... guitar riffs (rhythmic and solo), bass lines, drum beats, etc. I've got no instruments anymore, but there are a lot of tunes going on in my head. Hopefully I can lay them down and re learn them later. more

Resolved Question: My kindergartener didn't get the part he wanted in a play, can this be a teachable moment?

He's only 5 but he's always been charismatic, telling stories with wide eyes and sinister grins, or sitting me and my husband down so he can perform a musical instrument (like a triangle or fake guitar) for us. A couple weeks ago a high school babysitter of ours said that there's a little part in a play for a 5 year old. The part doesnt have lines, and all he'd have to do is sit on the couch with his babysitter at the very end of the show. I thought this would be a perfect introduction to the stage for him (my husband and i are both actors and performers and he's always been interested in it as well) so i asked him if he'd like to and he very enthusiastically replied yes. But when he got to the audition, he refused to shake the director's hand, tell her his name and we could barely get him to sit on the couch. While i'd never bring him there to force him to start getting on the stage, he seemed so excited about doing it i thought he'd do great. He was kind of bummed out when he left though asking for another chance, which he didn't get. We just found out he didn't get the part and i'm thinking i can use this to teach him that if you want something, you have to cooperate through all the steps, you can't just get what you want immediately or only cooperate on your own time. Would it be unreasonable and seem like i'm rubbing it in his face that he didn't get the part? Should i just console him instead? Or would this be a good lesson to learn and a good time for me to teach it? more

Resolved Question: What is the best way to teach my 4 year old daughter piano?

I can play rhythm guitar. I also would like to learn piano. I have a decent ear for music. I can teach her simple melodies that I have figured out for myself, like Mary had a little lamb etc. I can't read music although, I do know a little bit about it. Should I learn on line somewhere myself(I want to learn) and then teach her> Is she to young to read music. She just started JK but is slowly reading 3 and 4 letter words. We are tight on cash and I can't really afford private piano lessons. Should I learn the basics and teach that to her first? What do you think? thanks in advanced... more

Resolved Question: I'm trying to learn a song on guitar, and need help with the strum pattern.?

Resolved Question: WTF is guitar tab, and why do people want me to give it to them?

I keep hearing "give me the tabs for that"...? Do they mean the sheet music? As in musical notation? I found something earlier that I was referred to and it looked like a bunch of numbers (I'm assuming they are referring to the frets on 6 lines. Is this really what everyone is using to read music nowadays? I... don't even know what to say if that's true. Laziness? What's so difficult about learning notation? It's... not difficult.. more

Resolved Question: Time to give up guitar or change teachers?

Hello all, So I have been with my guitar teacher for just under a year, let me explain quickly what the issue is. I started guitar for the fun of being able to play the bands I like, call it a stress buster or something along those lines. That was all well and good so decided to learn some harder stuff, thought ok might be the time to get a teacher to help with my technical ability. So the teacher I initially got is my current teacher, been with him for just approaching a year now. However around half a year ago he started to teach me theory and saying how this will improve my ability to play these songs etc. Eventually his ideas changed to teaching me more complex theory, which tbh I can't stand bores the hell out of me. Now he's going on about how much potential as a guitarist I have and all this tripe. So I say to my family that I only want guitar as a hobby and cba with a career in anything music related. I'm an OK guitarist whos just average really and I honestly can't see why my parents can't see that my teacher is just saying that I am amazing when... well I really 'am not. So we get into arguments (parents) about how no one is listening to what I want from the lessons... Any advise? All I want from the lessons is to be able to just play the odd song, not take some stupid instrument to a career level as I honestly do not see myself ever learning this current theory in a million years.... Thanks, more

Resolved Question: How long should i wait? and what does it cost?

So i play the acoustic guitar for 2 months now, and i learned some finger picking, chords, blues scale, how to tune a guitar standard and i can read tablatures. And i want to start playing the electric guitar, but my cousin tells me i should still practice on the acoustic guitar or i will ruin my whole guitarplaying :s but i don't know.. I'm really interested in guitar and i love learning about the history of it and i just want to know everything about it. I'm planning to buy a second-hand stratocaster for like €100 and a line 6 spider II amp for €150 second-hand. Guys, i love the guitar and i'm addicted to it, but i want to play more songs that go from rock to metalcore, because that's my music style. What would you recommend? more

Voting Question: should I get a guitar or a bass?!? PLEASE HELP!!!!?

I am having a alot of trouble deciding whether I should get a guitar or a bass, and I'm actually going to go out and buy it this weekend...and I STILL haven't made up my mind for sure!!!! please help!! i'll give you the reasons for each, and then you can tell me your opinion about what I should do. well here it goes: guitar: about 5 years ago, I wanted to play guitar and there was a guitar class at my school and I couldn't afford to buy a guitar. somehow I ended up talking to my principal about it and SHE ended up buying me an classical guitar out of her own pocket 0_0 but the teacher was a crappy teacher and no one learned anything. and then about 3 years ago, I went to another school that had a guitar class as well. I signed up for it and all, but once again, the teacher berly taught us anything, and the class was chaos. litterally. and so I still wanted to play guitar afterwards, so I've been trying to teach myself something. but here's the thing: my classical guitar is a piece of sh*t. honestly. it costed 300 pesos, which is 30 dollars here in the states. i also have small hands, which makes many chords impossible for me to do...so I can't even learn the whole song properly!!! and a while back, i tried playing on my friend's electric guitar. and WOW! it was so much easier. the electric guitar felt very friendly to me. and since then i've wanted an electric. i also feel that it would be kind of unfair to myself if I just gave up playing guitar because I've never really given myself the chance to play properly. here's my argument for bass: I honestly love deeper sounds when it comes to music. I love bands like The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Specimen, etc. These bands really give a crap about bass. I love it when the bass actually plays as the second rythym of the song, and not just random banging of the E string the entire time. My bass inspiration is Simon Gallup of The Cure. He plays the best lines ever. Just listen to 'Fascination Street' and 'Disintegration.' The bass plays a hugely important role in both of these songs, and his lines sound beautiful. I would like to play bass like how it is actually meant to be played: as the second rhythm of the whole song. BUT, I am a very impatient person and I want to get to PLAYING SOMETHING ALREADY!!! On the guitar, I could be playing something recognizable in an instant, whereas on the bass I would just be playing rhythm. and I also want to get to WRITING SONGS ALREADY!!! The only other instrument I can play are the keyboards, and I have written some stuff on keyboards. Will a guitar be better for writing stuff, rather than a bass or viceversa? and I also believe by being a bass player, it would be easier to accomodate oneself in a band because there are less bass players than guitar players, which means less competition. but then again, knowing guitar is one of the "basic things" you must know how to play. or at least it seems like it. :P btw, I am a short scrawny girl with small hands. i guess that would also influence which instrument I'd be better at playing. I've also seen alot of girls play bass. Is it easier for girls to play bass or something, or is that just a coincidence? 0_0 What do you think I should do? and I'm sorry about the bunch of reading!!!!! please help!!!! more
