Open Question: How do I get started REALLY playing the guitar?

I got my first guitar for my 8th birthday, and i'm 18 now. I have been playing it since then but all I do is look up tabs to songs I like and play off that. Getting them down pretty good isn't that hard for me, and I think that i'm experienced enough to take it to the next level. My friend whose a few months younger than me can play circles around me. He can sit there for hours and just make up the best sounding blues you could think of. He is in a band that is actually starting to take off pretty big right now. One of my other friends, his dad can do the same thing. I would love to be able to sit down and jam with them like I do, but not feel inadequate. How can I keep up with someone who knows his scales, knows his way around the guitar and can put his soul into his music? The trouble is that I don't know where to start. Music lessons are way too expensive and most of the time not worth it, and i'm not sure how to use the internet to find these things out for free. Do I start by learning scales? All of the scales? Until I can do them in my sleep? Do I just start messing around with my guitar until something that sounds good comes out? Can someone please help me? more

Voting Question: how can i use guitar pro to learn songs on drums?

my friend showed me that guitar pro can do drum tabs too, but i have no idea how to read this. for one thing, i'm not using guitar pro, i'm using TuxGuitar, the free and open source alternative because...well, i have no money for software right now. but it can read guitar pro files and it looks relatively the same, so it's close enough. i opened up the file and it shows me notes. i clicked on the percussion section of the song and there's still notes. that doesn't make any sense, drums don't have notes like guitar and bass (or i could be wrong, i'm a self taught drummer who uses youtube videos to learn songs). either way, i'm really confused on how to make heads or tails of this and i really want to learn this song and have no other way. i'm using the file in the link below if that helps at all. thanks in advance, http://www.911tabs.com/link/?3951540something i forgot to include was that i want to isolate the other tracks (guitar, bass, keyboards) and just focus on the drums, but there doesn't seem to be an option to do that. more

Resolved Question: What's a good way to casually learn to play the guitar?

I took guitar lessons years ago, but back then I was more interested in learning individual songs than actual theory, which I now regret. I have a little (not much, but a little) free time on my hands now, and I can find tabs on the internet and memorize them, but I'd like to go beyond that and maybe pick up a little music theory so I can understand what I'm playing and maybe play some things that haven't been written out note for note. I don't have the money or time for lessons, but I have the internet and a decent acoustic guitar, and I can probably stand to buy a music book or two if anyone has any good ones to recommend. So, any suggestions on where to start? more

I've been playing guitar for almost three years and I have a strong grasp of music. I've been playing piano recently, but I'm not familiar with what pieces of music I should be looking at. For the most part, I've been learning techniques and coordination by playing Disney songs (A Whole New World), and simple rock/alternative songs (Mad World, How to Save a Life, Coldplay, etc), but they can be a bit fluffy. What songs should I learn that other piano players have used to learn piano? I'm willing to learn any and all things, and would like to learn some classical pieces. Also is there a good place for free sheet music online, similar to how there are for tabs for guitar? more

well ive been playing guitar for probably about a year now but i really got into it probably about 6 months ago. Anyways, so i have one of those starter packs (fender starcaster). So i can read tabs, i know some major chords, i can play songs like dear maria count me in, dirty little secret, decode etc (i like alternative music) well now, i dont know where to go. Im not taking lessons nor do i plan on taking lessons and those online video lessons are my last resort. What should i do? I kinda wanna learn how to do those improv solos and blues and stuff. I'm learning how to play acoustic guitar and I can sortof read tab and notes. Problem is I can only read the letters and not the stick things. Okay, I'm a VERY NEW beginner to guitar. I got one for Christmas. An acoustic, and my friend is teaching me starting tomorrow. After I learn all the notes, the first song I want to learn is Butterfly Fly Away by Miley Cyrus. I'm not sure, but is there a possiblilty that there's a free printable version with lyrics, too, maybe?? I am looking for some sheet music online. I have already downloaded and printed, for free,"Asturias Leyenda" a Spanish classic. Right now I am looking for a very old classic song called "Blue Angel" by Chet Atkins. As my dad explained, he said this song was the "Cliffs of Dover" of the late 60s. Resolved Question: Ideas for jazzy christmas songs to play at senior home?

My friend and I both love music, and we decided to play some gigs at Old Folks' Homes in our town. The shows will probably be in early December. We've played gigs before, but never at a place like a seniors home. Also, it's near Christmas, so we have to learn some cool holiday material that will be both fun to play and good for the seniors to listen to. My friend plays guitar. He specializes in shredding and 80's style heir and arena metal, but he can play other styles very well too. I play jazz piano, and am studying classical music. We both love to compose and arrange. These old folks will probably like jazz and traditional carols. I already wrote jazzy arrangements for Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and O Tannebaum (O' christmas tree), as well as a funky latin fusion thing that has melodies from Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Silver Bells woven into it. My friend knows some old-time christmas tunes on both guitar and cello, although he'd probably prefer to do the jazz. Does anybody know of any fun jazz arrangements of christmas songs? I can't sight read, because I am visually impaired and I play by ear. Both my friend and I can read guitar tab, and we both know music theory. Feel free to just leave chord progressions to cool christmas tunes. more

Interests: Learning, loving, making music to inspire, connecting, thinking, political debate, coffee, Red Bull, chillaxation, meditation, vacations, stand-up comedy, free movies @ Regal Cinemas; ), Roller Coasters, jogging when I have the time/will-power, answering questions on Yahoo Answers, listening to dusty old records from my collection, going record shopping, waxing on as well as waxing off, etc, etc... Favorite Music: Anything "blues-based", like acid rock of the late 60s, Classic Rock of the 1970s, grunge/most 90's music, retro/garage rock, Southern Rock,Bluegrass, funk, soul, ska, Reggae, the original punk rock (late 70s early 80s), some if not most of the punk rock rivial of the 1990's,british pop rock of the 1960s and otherwise, some "metal" such as system of a down, nin (actually industrial grunge in my opinion),Meshugah, Rob Zombie, or rage against the machine, some rap such as cypress hill, wutang clan (preferably old school when rap was still by the people for the people)... I'm kinda picky about what I put into my stereo/put onto my turn-table...wouldn't want to waste a perfectly good pair of speakers/eardrums! What I like more than any particular genre is any song that tells a good story with a good riff and/or a good rythmn (ie beat)... Favorite TV Shows: I mostly try not to waste my life away with television, but when I do, I tend to watch cable news programs, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart/ the colbert report, Weeds, Breaking Bad, whatev I can find while channel surfing that isn't broadcasting sexually devious and mindless propaganda (ie commercials)... Favorite Movies: Any flicks by Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton, Kevin Smith, StarWars, good horror flicks (not slasher), crazy films that mess with your head like The Science of Sleep, ect. Also, Jim Carey flicks, good horror movies, and classic action/adventure movies such as Indianna Jones and Back to the Future...However, I also tend to like any movie that has a cult following. Favorite Books: The Art Of Happiness by the Dali Lama, which helped me to find enjoyment from every aspect of life, High Fidelity & Songbook...both by Nick Hornby, absolutely hilarious for any fan of music, Contact by Carl Sagan, a very deep philosophical and thought provoking adventure with themes such as the existance of extraterrestrials and God, The Torah by God, Aliens, or someone posing as God, a very biased approach at explaining why we exist, nevertheless still important in its ancient and widely accepted ideals, Cool Gardens by Serg Tankian, poetry for freethinkers, Dreams From My Father by President Barack Obama, a book that got me off of drugs and back into school, Stephen King's The Stand, Social Intelligence, the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, selfexplannatory if you are a fan-if you aren't than you wouldn't understand anyway, a book called Zen Guitar that I don't remember the author's name, it helped me to "relearn" how to creatively make music without the use of drugs-as well as getting in touch with your inner imagination, Kurt Cobain Journals,tragic but fascinating, and I'm sure there are more... Basically I've been wanting to learn the Piano for some time and I recently obtained a Keyboard for free and I guess now's a good time? I'm not exactly new to instruments I already play Guitar and Bass but I pretty sure that won't help me, right? Anyways, one to my main questions. I could use a keyboard to learn right? I mean, I know I could get the basic feel but I would like to learn a song or so before going after a real piano to see if I like it or not. The keyboard has 35 white keys and 25 black ones. Another Question I have is how hard is it? I mean I know it's not going to be easy but like it's not impossible right? I don't have alot of money to spare to take lessons and I would be just trying to scrape the basics I would need to know off the internet... Would this be ok? And I guess the last one is does anyone know a good site I could learn off of for free? Like looks for tabs (Is it called tabs like for guitars or is it sheet music?) and lessons. Resolved Question: Guitarist looking to learn the Mandolin. What are the main differences?

Hello, I've been playing guitar for about a year and a half, and I love it! The only problem I have is I can't lug around my big electric guitar everywhere to play when I have some free time on the road or at my Grandma's house or whatever. I recently took interest in Mandolins and admire their small stature and bright sound. I figure bringing a Mandolin along with me places wouldn't be as much of a hassle and it wouldn't weigh me down to much if I wore it with a strap. My concern is, my main musical interest lies in Beatles tunes, and Mandolin tab is really hard to find online. Can guitar tab somehow be transferred to Mandolin, or would I have to come up with all new tab? Is the Mandolin very different from the guitar? And lastly, is it worth it for me to buy a Mandolin? I havn't started yet, but i think my next class is on the 21st, so we will probably start then. We have 2 One hour classes every 7 school days. Unlike most other people in the class i will have a guitar at home to practice, but no teacher to help. And we have to use notes or whatever you call them, and not tabs. No tabs, tabs bad, tabs easy. Resolved Question: Can someone tell me where I can find online instructions to learn to play the DULCIMER?

I just purchased a mountain dulcimer. I really don't know anything about it but I fell in love when I heard it played on a music award show (Cindy Lauper!) and I got a 4 string Folkcraft all dark walnut model, made in the 60's so I hope it will have a nice seasoned sound. Is there anything anyone can tell me about it to help me get started? I play the autoharp and can read music having learned piano, but the guitar was always my first love....but I wasn't allowed that...wah...but I do love the autoharp but find it a little limited. I really cant wait to get going on the dulcimer. ivebeen playing guitar for a year as of last week and i decided i might as well start learning scales (yesssss i know "oh my god! you haven't learned scales yet?!?!") ive been looking for a site that offers free scale tabs and can't seem to find one...anyone know where i can get 'em? oh...and i was looking for a new guitar...not a gibson or some really expensive guitar but a reliable one and one that has a good sound, anyone got any recomendations? p.s.- i have a .b.c. rich avenger...i kinda like .b.c. richs' but i would like to have a diffrent one...one that doesnt break 600$ more

I already looked up some some website but none of them are in enough detail for me.... they're not in my understanding. So I'm trying to find free lessons that can teach me what else I need to know. I already have a few books, so I know how to play a few chords.... I also need to learn tabs. I don't quite understand those. Hey hello, I used to play guitar (i'm 16). i played guitar for a few weeks, played things like, nothing else matters, the soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean and some other easy to play things. before i started playing serious i somehow got dragged away from playing guitar.. I haven't played for like 1 year now and my guitar is still in good condition etc, don't worry about that :) I'm just wondering, as i really wanna start playing again but with good intentions and hopefully i'll become good one day. Are there any Guitar-beginners guides or something for FREE on the web? which give me aid with both basics, medium hard and hard things? What is preferable, Taking lessons or using internet (i never had lessons, learned what i got from myself) Where can i find information about how to play tabs etc? that's about it, any other tips are very much appreciated! Resolved Question: Other ways to share sheet music...?

Kind of a loaded question but i just kept thinking, sorry... Making copies of copyrighted music is illegal, obviously, that's the point. But if you search the web there are plenty of copyrighted lyrics and guitar tabs that are being shared legally. And this is because the music has been transcribed but ear, something almost any musician can do anyways. Every other question on Answers is asking for sheet music and I was wondering, does the same kind of thing exist for sheet music? and if not why not? It seems like it could be a very use-full tool, a youtube for musicians. If i can learn a song by ear and then write it out for a friend, that's not illegal and i don't think that if i post it on the internet that it is either, does anyone know? I do feel bad to take away from an artist or composer who had worked hard on a piece but most of the music i look for is from dead musicians and it doesn't seem right for descendant or right-holders to earn money off of someone else's work, so i wouldn't feel bad to get this music for free. When a piece reaches a certain age, it becomes free to perform and record without royalties, though the sheet music i don't think changes. What's your thoughts on that? Thanks for help on any of the questions. Probably should've broken them up but they all kinda go hand in hand to me.Of course there is a moral issue with it all. And I'm not saying you take it for your own. You just learn to play it for free. If someone is desperate enough they'll get someone else to learn it for them and write it out anyways, it's just sharing that transcription, but it is still the composers piece and everyone would know that. Anyone with a moral stance against it should just not do it. But for years it has been done with guitar and bass music, and there has been very little issues, no one makes money off of it, it's just for fans who don't have the money or the resources to buy the peice, or the ability to learn it alone.it was mostly just curiousity, there are guitar tab sites that you can download the full arrangement in notated form and a play through often reveals they're currect, the sites protect themselves with a short blurb on personal use only, not official, and every song is listed with a copyright. But i'm sure it can't be that simple otherwise it would be done for more than just a stupid guitar. more

Resolved Question: I learning Bass Guitar simple?

I currently play saxophone, percussion, clarinet and keyboard... Im thinking of taking up bass guitar in my free time so I can get with some of my buddies and jam out with them. I would like to know if I pick up a bass guitar if it would be easy to teach myself with method books and online stuff. If push comes to shove I would probably get a few private lessons. I can read notes and rhythms... Im guessing the only thing that will be new to me is learning the notes on the guitar and finger positions... I do now what to play tabs though, I want to read notes. How easy is this? (learning bass guitar) I have no interest in slap bass btw. I don't know if those are two different instruments to even begin with. : ) All the help will be great! Thanks! more
