Open Question: Beginner Clarinet Questions?

Alright, I'm very interested in learning to play the clarinet. (I play guitar, bass and percussion seriously, as well as a bit of banjo, mandolin and piano. Just a bit of fiddling with those last three, really.) I really want to branch out a bit, and I've always been interested in the clarinet. I want to learn to play it - mainly for jazz. Here's the clarinet I was thinking of getting: http://band-orchestra.musiciansfriend.com/product/Etude-ECL100-Clarinet-Outfit?sku=463674 That one seems good - I don't want anything too crazy or expensive now, cause I don't know if I'm seriously going to play or not. If I really got into it, I'd buy a better one later. So, to anyone who plays clarinet, do you consider that one good for a beginner? Also, what would I need? I've heard of reeds and stuff like that...I don't see anything about a reed in this clarinet's information, so I don't know if that one uses them or what. Need help! Also! Do you read music for playing clarinet, or is it a lot of improv? Guitar uses pretty much no music, just tabs and chords. How is it for clarinet? I'd really appreciate the help all! Points to the best answer! Thanks! more

Voting Question: Should I get lessons for guitar or bass guitar?

I have decided that I want to learn BOTH guitar and bass guitar. My brother knows how to play guitar - he took lessons... So I know that he could help me. However, I've heard that bass guitar is easier to play (though I understand it's "harder to master"?). So, it isn't a matter of deciding which instrument I want to learn, because I want to learn both. But I don't have enough money to get lessons for both, so I want to know which instrument should I get lessons for? I'm leaning more towards bass lessons just because my brother has been playing for about 3 1/2 years (took lessons for two to two and a half years, I think) so he might be able to help teach me basic technique. Another idea I have is this: Take bass guitar lessons for a year, WHILE beginning to teach myself regular guitar (sorry, I don't know what to call it), so I can learn some of the basics of bass, and then switch to regular guitar lessons after about a year to a year and a half. Does this sound like a good idea, or could this end in failure? (Meaning, I suck at one/both instruments.) Again, I want to make it clear that I want to learn both instruments, so I'm not trying to "decide" which one to choose (like a lot of people on here generally seem to ask.) If anyone could give me ideas or help me to decide what I should do in this situation, that would be great. If you are confused by my question, please ask. Thank you in advance. more

Voting Question: How long would it take me to learn bass guitar well enough to play in a band?

I absolutely love music, so I decided to pick up bass and eventually play in a band with my friend who has been playing guitar for 6 years. I know the length it takes to learn bass also depends on some factors so here is a list: -Ive been a percussionist for 5 years -I'm 15 years old -I can read rhythm and notes fairly well -I plan on getting private lessons -I've been told from my teachers that I'm a fast learner -I practice for 3 hours a day -My friend also is giving me tips as well I'm very dedicated, I got my bass a week ago and I've taught myself seven nation army(white stripes), the national anthem(radiohead) money(pink floyd), blisters in the sun(violent femmes) and I'm currently working on learning come together and i saw her standing there(The beatles) more

Resolved Question: How hard is to learn to play bass?

I have played guitar for about 3 years and I'm self taught. I've seen people play a bass and I know how similar it looks to guitar but I've never played one so I was wondering how difficult it would be. more

Resolved Question: How to train ears while playing guitar (as opposed to hands)?

I'm an intermediate level bass guitar player, but this question could work for near any instrument. I can play songs and go through scales and all that, but I really feel like it's my fingers are learning shapes (as opposed to my ears learning intervals and patterns). For instance, if I changed the tuning on my guitar to say, drop D, I'd be totally screwed because it'd mess up the shapes. This also makes it difficult for me to go up and down octaves. I try closing my eyes and humming along with the notes I play but I don't feel like a strong connection is being made between where my fingers go and what note is played. Any advice? Specific exercises or tips? I appreciate the help. And yes, I'm aware a teacher would be helpful. I wish I could afford one right now. Thanks.a more

Resolved Question: Want to learn Bass Guitar?

Hey guys, I'm looking to learn bass guitar, and I have several questions about how would be best on getting started: A) What's best? A 5-string bass or 4-string bass to learn on? B) What should I pay for a starting bass? I've got about 100-150 that I would like to invest in the guitar? C) Do I need an Amp right away, if I'm just learning? D) Is there a website I can self teach myself? I know how to read music (played baritone and trumpet some in High School) and think I can probably teach myself starting out. more

Voting Question: Getting good at guitar?

Firstly, I don't play guitar, but I do play bass. I want to learn to play guitar eventually but I'm not quite done with experimenting on bass first. Let's say I've been told I have a good ear, impeccable sense of rhythm, and odd musical sense. How much practice is really required to reach the level of say, Dave Mustaine? He's very, very good, but not as great as he sometimes makes himself out to be. I'm just saying. To Patrick: How can I pass judgment on his playing if I have to ask how much time it will take to reach his level? Simple. I've watched and heard him, and at least 50 other guitarists perform extensively. As I said before, he's not bad. The real problem is his ego. We're all given what I like to call "powers of observation".While I'm at it, does anyone have any books, websites, or videos to recommend? more

Resolved Question: want to learn how to play bass?

I used to play bass (guitar) about 2 years ago and had only been playing for about 4 months but had to give up because of inconveniences. I've been thinking for a while how much I enjoyed it and miss it. I really believe that it's what I was meant to do how ever cheesy that may sound,, it was the only thing I've ever been remotely good at,, no joke. I love music and loved playing bass for the short time,, any advise ?? Am I even really asking a question?? /: more

Resolved Question: Which should I pick guitar or bass?

Which is the best instrument to play? I want to learn either bass or guitar and need some information such as which is the fastest to learn? Will this make it easier for me to learn drums? c) any useful websites? Thanks very much =) more

Voting Question: guitar, drums, piano, flute, and bass which is the easiest to hardest? in order please.?

i want to know because i have played flute in the 3rd and 4th grade and now i'm in the 10th grade it's okay and it not so easy but not so hard either. i might not keep on practicing on it. piano is difficult but i'm learning but i'll try to become an intermidiate the most my dad said to be an expert it takes years and years to master it not just 1 or 2. sorry not for me. bass tried might improved, drums easiest to improvise but still a beginner will improved to at least an intermidiate. guitar my life long passion.begginner i must admit i decided not to practice during freshman year and yeah i regretted that but now i'm gonna practice everyday at least 2 hours or so. i'll try to become an expert on that. also if i learn guitar than bass should be easy right? i'll practice guitar, drums and piano(once my brother gives me the copy of his piano book)every single day. also if i were able to read the sheet music for piano then drums and guitar should be easy right the thing is no sites tells me where to play the guitar on the sheet music and drums well yeah got that all i need are songs so piano is technically the easiest to play for songs since i know where to play well i will soon. how long will it take to master reading sheet music and yeah i know tabs are easier but in case if the songs are in sheet music i want to be able to play so how long? also got any songs on tabs for drums, guitar and piano or sheet music even? more

I have struck an interest to learn to play bass guitar. (The only instrument I know how to play is the baritone horn/euphonium which I have played for about 4 years now.) And of course I have questions 1. What would be the best bass to get? I have a budget of $300 max. What amp should I get (please nothing too much more than $100) 2. Is it somewhat easy to switch from bass to normal electric guitar? 3. Is it best to take lessons, or is it worth a try to teach myself? 4. What is the best resource to help answer my future questions? Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: How Do I Become A Professional/Famous Musician?

I've been writing lyrics since i was six, learned to play the drums when i was seven and am now 15 and have learned to play the guitar, bass, keyboard/piano, and have become a very good vocalist. I can also compose all kinds of music. The main thing I want to do is become a musician as a life ambition and career. Resolved Question: What should I pay attention to when buying my first bass?

I'm thinking about learning to play (electric) bass guitar, so I was wondering what I should pay attention to when browsing for my first bass. I've been checking out some internetstores, and they seem to sell a variety of "beginners packs". How do I pick what's right for me? I'm reasonably tall, does that matter? In the info they are talking about the type of wood, the number of frets, the neck, the type of guitar and the weight, to name a few. It's my first bass guitar (or instrument for that matter), so does it really matter at this point? Thanks in advance for answering! more

Resolved Question: I am planning on majoring in Electrical Engineering, what colleges could I get into?

And I am currently living in Portland Oregon. I scored a 29 composite on the ACT's, I do not remember my SAT score, but it was close to 2000. I maintained a 3.18gpa throughout high school. I took 4 trimesters of foreign language, and the last math class I ended up taking was advanced discrete mathematics. I have no extracurriculars through school - I spent most of my time playing music and learning instruments (piano, guitar, bass, harmonica, mandolin and saxophone). I have never taken one lesson, yet I am very solid on theory. I also spent quite a bit of my time working with classic cars and restoring them, engine and chassis wise. I am capable of rebuilding engines and doing basic welding. As far as activities related to the field... I spent months learning about electrical components on my own, and started making my own guitar pedals. I started etching my own PCB's, drilling them and soldering them together... That progressed into buying vintage pedals that were broken and selling them at profit, which eventually progressed into buying broken amplifiers and fixing them for a profit. I also know quite a bit about computers, and know how the majority of the components work. I used to be able to use Basic and Cocoa fairly well. I haven't messed with either for awhile, but I am confident I'd be able to get back in pace quickly. What are some "decent" colleges that offer excellent electrical engineering programs that I could get into? As of now, I am looking into Oregon State, Calpoly, and Washington State, among others... I realize my GPA might be a bit of a hindrance, however, it really doesn't reflect my actual abilities. The last time I asked this question I was told I was going to fail, based primarily on my GPA and SAT scores. I believe I am more than capable of doing whatever is thrown at me if I put mind to it. I am absolutely positive that Electrical Engineering is the field I would like to go into, I am very interested in this kind of thing. Please do not recommend I go into a different field. What I meant in saying I can do anything that is thrown at me is that I actually enjoy learning about this. I think it is amazing how electricity and computers work. If there is something I don't understand, I will enjoy tutoring to figure it out while others will be pulling their hair out. I even enjoy math. more

Resolved Question: What musical scale should I learn for singing?

Resolved Question: Tips on how to sing better?

I am currently learning how to play the guitar and have been playing songs for a while now. However, my singing sounds very awkward. It's not horrible or anything but it's very monotone and uninteresting. Also during some particularly somewhat high notes my voice cracks. I haven't had formal singing lessons and I'm not looking to be remarkable since my main goal is to play the guitar really but I want a decent enough voice to accompany my guitar playing. My singing is an alto I think. Not a bass and a falsetto. Any tips on how to improve my voice? Or can point me to a website that can? more

Voting Question: Bass guitar or electric guitar?

Resolved Question: Songs with a good piano, bass, and vocals?

For school every month we need to learn 3 songs, 2 of those songs our teacher picks and we get to pick one song. We have to learn how to play the song on all of the instruments we know. I know how to play bass (bass guitar), piano, and I am a good singer. I usually sing alto but I can sing higher sometimes (although I don't prefer to). Does anybody have good song ideas for me? Resolved Question: Worried about losing interest in my favorite hobby - music?

I learned how to play guitar about 10 years ago, worked with a local musician as a guitar duo for a number of years playing coffee shops and small cafes;I then played guitar and later bass for a few local bands but bands always break up, musicians come and go and now I have nothing to strive for, no motivation to practice or play but I've worked really hard to get where I'm at musically; it didn't come easy and I don't want to lose my talent and have to start over. I used to play piano, but stopped when I took up guitar, now I can't believe I ever played piano at all I am so rusty.Yet I love music, it is my thing, but I feel so detached from it right now. What is happening to me? I feel like a frustrated musician with no direction; no place to plug my talent into. There's so much I want to do but I'm not cut out to do solo work, and it's so hard to find another musician I can play with; they can all be so egotistical and temperamental. Voting Question: How to Play a Stylophone?

Hey guys. Me and my friends are starting a band and they can both play lots of instruments, bass guitar, electric guitar, drums and piano, and I am the lead vocalist. But because our influences are 1980's disco and our main genre is Electro/synthopop I have decided to learn an instrument. I came across the Stylophone when listening to Little Boots, Electric Artist, and I found her small instrument to be a perfect fitting for me as I will be singing as well as using an instrument. I know the basics of piano playing, like the where the keys are and I can play some very simple things like C Major. But what I was wondering if any of you knew any good Stylophone tutorials that would give me a complete lesson on how to play it because it involves some complicated stuff like octaves and I need someone to give me more than the basics. Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Which instrument is the easiest to learn how to play?

My friends and I want to start a band, but I don't know how to play anything! (they already have a singer) I was interested in playing the drums or bass guitar but i dunno. Which is fun and easy? not including things like the violin, flute, etc. OR recorders and kazoos. I mean real, kick-ass band instruments. THANKS! more

Resolved Question: STOP THE HATE - I LOVE THE HATE!!!?

This is an essay I wrote a LONG time ago! I'm bored, so what do you think of it. (I'm seriously bored) Thing is, I'm not going to give you the topic, just guess who I'm debating about!! You should know. It sucks, but I don't want to edit it. I believe the teenagers that are haters, seriously overreact. If they think their music is for little girls, then why do you argue with them if you really believe that? You come off as immature for arguing with a 10 year old. Since when does age have to do with everying?! We were all tweens before! :) I think we all know that they have older audiences too. Saying they're gay. That doesn't prove anything. It's actually really offensive to gay people. They're annoying. Um.. honey have you met them? I haven't exactly met them yet, but I never meant that I 'LOVED' them like that, in a way to marry them .! Love is a lot more trustworthy than hate. The haters blab more about the (blank celebrity) than the Fans do.. Nowadays. My grandma said that they can sing all right. That's from a possibly 'mature' adult. Not teenagers who think that their one comment will change the world. Ah mommy I'm gonna be president now! I spread ALL of my comments around youtube saying the (blank celebrity) sucks as* Um.. Excuse me young woman? No, No mama DON'T ! Some of you guys say (blank celebrity) can only be recognized by younger kids. Well no, their music is intended for all ages. If you like the freedom called "Freedom of Press" then writing music is a freedom too. For instance, when you always hear haters replying: You don't 'deserve' to write music, you untalented freaks! If you want to keep this so called freedom, use it without abusing it! One day, it will just be slipped right from under our feet. Watch! We don't even deserve to be on this Earth when Jesus walked this turf?! Your point? Haters: If everyone liked the same things as you, wouldn't it get boring?? Haters are what keep me going everyday! So the more you hate, the MORE I come! I understand if you say I'm not a fan of them, but you don't have to get all messy and curse them out. It makes you sound sort of dumb. Since you basically use curse words to make yourself sound cool. I think they could care less of what you have to say about them that way. If I was a millionaire, I would rather listen to someone with a great education, and more successful than I to rant on me than some teenager, who comes off as ignorant because they just don't know how to accept things and move on. You WASTE MORE TIME on (blank celebrity) then some of the fans do. Saying they are gay is not good enough. Does it really matter whether you like them or not, and have to share your WHOLE opinion to the entire world like it's some new deadly experiment on humans?! It cares upon the individuals opinions. Do you need to care about another persons' life as your own, unless you actually care? You can curse all you want, but jumbling up a bunch of words like: Gay fags ya'll are ****- Really isn't much to say.. Also, some of you say that they have a backup band. OF COURSE THEY NEED ONE! They can't play guitar, piano, tamborine, drums, bass etc. all at the same time. Come on they are only a trio. The purity ring hate comments are BULL! That has nothing to do with ME OR YOU. It isn't our business, it's a religion/tradition, their father is a pastor. Ok? If you get that. Saying they are a disgrace to music? Music IS music that's all there is to it. In the end its all about the feelings of the individual. Not only you. Music is supposed to be fun or enjoyable, something that fits your mood. It doesn't have to be completely sophisticated with guitar riffs you could only learn to play in 20 years!!You win 10 points Pinky.. Or however for best answer!! And a virtual iphone!! more

Resolved Question: How to Write a Song with a Guitar?

Ok, So I play Guitar and Drums DAILY!. I love to play it's my passion and I have had a natural talent at it. Also, I love to write songs (Country, Rock, Blues) I write them hearing the guitar and drums behind the words and the melody just flows a little lead guitar and its full throttle in my head, however, my big problem is trying to play the guitar to the songs I write. I can never find the right chords or sounds.. So I have tried many times writing songs with my guitar, however I just cannot seem to make it sound the way I want (I am using Acoustic, though I have used my Electric hoping for a chance that it would help). My problem is I cannot seem to express my music on the guitar nor Can I seem to write the songs when I am playing the guitar.. I thought I was limited on chords so I went to youtube and learned new chords and lead licks, I went to guitar shops and bought books on how to play various chords, I have a poster with about 100 different guitar chords on it. I have learned'em all now, I have them down really good, however I still am stumped and cannot seem to pickup on it nor can I solve the problem. So I know it now isn't a lack of knowing chords, it's just some kind of mental block or something. It really sucks because I have made tons of Guitar rhythms using an electric guitar than used my Boss BR-8 to add in my own drums and bass guitar as well as lead, and it always seems to come out awesome, I just can never seem to pick up on writing music with the guitar or getting words to my melodies.. I am looking for any and every suggestion possible. I seriously have been working on this since I was a freshman in High School in 2005, I am graduated and 19 years old and still cannot figure it out.. ALSO, I took ALL the music classes at my High School (4 years worth) from guitar through Bass and Percussion, I also took the History Of American Music (HAM) and Chorus And Band classes as well. So I have a well known knowledge of Music but for some reason this has been bothering me for sometime now!. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks! more

Voting Question: I'm 12 and I've written 6 songs, help?

I've written 6 songs, and I can play them all on different instruments (guitar, bass, drums, piano, vocal etc.) just not all at the same time so I don't know how it sounds, but I want to know how to record them all, and maybe have them on sheet music. Yes, I know this would be a lot easier if another person was helping with the instruments, but I've tried that, nobody seems to have the kind of dedication I have. Anyways, I've learned to connect them all to the computer, I just need some tips :P I kind of want to be an entrepreneur, to show people that not all kids are simple minded. By the way, I'm not just another Disney channel artist, I write Metal, and my lyrics talk about how people are easily guided by the media, belief in god, hypocriticism, etc.answer 1: holy crap yes! I hate that song, the only reason a majority of people listen to his music is because he's "hot"answer 1: holy crap yes! I hate that song, the only reason a majority of people listen to his music is because he's "hot" answer 2: haha, it's not all I think about, I still have fun, there's no way I'm letting seriousness overcome my youth.answer 4: yeah, and I'm a christian don't get me wrong, It's about respecting religions :D yayyy godanswer 5: I think he was talking about a saxaphone...dee de dee answer 6: sweeet, anybody got a better answer than this guy? more
