Open Question: How do I get in a band? Which Instrument to learn?

Okay, I'm 17, I've successfully learned musical instruments when I was younger. I am VERY passionate about music, it means everything to me and I think if I boosted my confidence I could succeed in a band. The problem is that I don't play Guitar/Drums or Bass Guitar, which raises a bit of an issue. I don't really have much money to buy an instrument either atm. Anyway, I'm very passionate and want to give it a try...you only live once right? So what recommendations could be made on what instrument to play (thinking Drums or Bass)? How to go about learning in a cost efficient way? and then how to get myself in a band? Help would be much appreciated thanks.Drums do sound cool. How should I go about acquiring a drum kit? This is a hard question, but how good should I be to go looking for bands? Don't mind about fame or not, just love making music. more

Resolved Question: How to convince my parents to move to California (or maybe not...)?

I just turned 14 yesterday. I want to be a (rock) musician when I get older. I live in Nevada--there is NOTHING for music. I am learning guitar. I am also going to start singing lessons. I also would like to learn bass and drums. I have this feeling if I moved there, I would be able to find people who would like to start a band. It is something I think of all the time. It's not just for the money--could you imagine just playing music the rest of your life and having others say you inspired them? That would mean more than the world to me! I feel I can't follow my dreams where I live! I am willing to do whatever it takes. Problem is, my dad has a steady job. Sometimes, as selfish as it may sound, I wish he would lose it so I could just say "we should move to California--we have nothing to lose". But I know how selfish that is. I would live in an apartment if I had to! My cousin (who is 9) recently moved to California--I am probley going down there this summer. What should I do? I know you have to be 18 to move out...I am willing to just save my money from birthdays and christmas so I can be prepared when I move out. Thanks for your insight. How would you view this as a parent? My parents are supportive of my dream. They want me to succeed. ~K.I know I am only 14, but music is my life. I know I sound like that typical girl who will end up with broken dreams, but I have been working really hard. I am also willing to work 10 times as hard. I am concerned about money if we move and I wouldn't ask unless my dad really did lose his job. I know I should be thankful for what I do have, which I am.I don't wanna sell myself to record companies-if that is what you are thinking. There are more opportunities there. more

Voting Question: I have a question about sheet music and bass guitar. Can you answer?

Im getting a bass guitar in a few days for my b-day and ive been waiting a year! Well I just had a question about sheet music, its been awhile since ive been in music class but I remember the basics of reading music. To me its easier to play instruments using notes, then tabs i find tabs difficult. So if you buy a guitar song book does it have the bass notes in it too? Id assume it'd be by the bass clef lol. So if a song book doesnt have bass clef it isnt for bass guitar? Do you have to buy altogether seperate song books just for bass then regular guitar? My dad plays guitar and he has several song books i wanna learn from but most dont have a bass clef. How can you be sure when buying a book online, that it has bass notes in it? more

Voting Question: Learning to play bass guitar?

I dont know how to play guitar but I wanted to learn how to play the bass guitar. Is it difficult to learn it? Cause I know how to play the piano and im not really good at it. Is bass guitar a bit the same with piano? Cause in the piano, in the right hand, you play the lyrics (or whatever it is called), and in the left hand, you play chords.. That's why I memorize all the chords.. But in bass guitar, do you play chords also? And what about the strumming on the right hand? more

Voting Question: I've asked this before, but I really do need help?

As you probably all know, I do love the band Mcfly :) I have been playing bass guitar for a little over half a year, and I'm pretty decent in playing and learning things by ear [i.e. Transylvania, Too Close for Comfort, Stargirl], but every time I try to listen the song 'Just My Luck' to figure out the tabs, I'm stumped and have no idea what I'm doing! If anyone would tell me where to find it, or even possibly tab it for me, it would benefit a school band trip because there is a talent show that we're playing in [money goes to paying for the trip] and I can't play without the tabs! thanks Hannahand also, there are not any tabs on google, ultimateguitar, bassmasta, 911tabs, or any of that... more

Voting Question: Thinking of learning bass. Is it easy?

Resolved Question: What is a $200 dollar range bass guitar for a beginner that is decent to learn with and then expand from there?

I will probably try teaching myself first and have an experienced player come overlook me from time to time. I just need help on figuring out a good one for a decent price. -Thanks more

Resolved Question: Teaching myself how to play the piano?

I play the bass guitar (and currently take lessons) and took lead guitar for awhile. I can read bass clef very well but forget some of the treble clef.I want to teach myself the piano, because I think it is a better instrument then the guitar and I enjoy the bass but would also like to know how to play a more "musical" instrument for writing songs etc. Would it be hard to teach myself piano? Is the piano a hard instrument to play? What kind of beginner keyboard type thing would you recommend? By the I'm only 14. And wanna learn before I get too old. :) more

Resolved Question: Ok So... Chord Theory?

Okay, so I'm an amateur Bassist, and I've been playing for about a year. Now, I'm fine with Change-ups, and walks, and all that Jazz, But I've always been a big Metal Head, and since listening to Anesthesia and Orion by Cliff Burton, I've found that Arpeggiated Chords sound fucking amazing on a decent bass guitar. The issue? Besides forming Basic Triads along the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of any given scale, and of course, power chords, which everyone knows aren't actually chords, I have no clue how to make chords, nor do I have any Idea of how to set up epic chord progressions. I've been learning different Modes, but even so, Progressions escape me, because I guess I just don't know what I should be arpeggiating in that manner, or what a suspended or diminished or augmented chord is. I look at stuff I find and just go "Okay, what is that, and what does that have to do with playing notes?" Anyway I'm looking for good sites that can teach me what I want to know, preferably without a load of useless BS in between, that's to the point, and one that doesn't make me pay for instruction. Also, if possible, something without sheet music, or a site where it's optional would be nice. Is there anything out there, or am I just SOL. P.S. I do have Two six strings, and if necessary, I can learn theory via those, if necessary. I'd just prefer to learn on bass, as it's my instrument of choice. Anyway, any help/links would be awesome. more

Resolved Question: Can I learn bass and guitar at the same time?

alright, so i've played flute for 4 years now, so I'm pretty good with rhythms and reading music. This is my first year in high school, and i wanted to learn a new instrument. I asked my parents for a guitar, but I'm deciding whether i should learn bass too (that way i can play an instrument in jazz band.) I'm definitely learning guitar (considering they already bought it for me) but i also really want to learn bass. I know they're both difficult, and they're really 2 completely different instruments, but could i try guitar, then pick up bass later? Or is that hard/confusing to do? And I'm not talking about playing just root notes on bass, I'm talking about the harder stuff. Sick Puppies and Breaking Benjamin are 2 of my favorite bands, so i want to eventually be able to play their music. I'm just curious, can i become a good guitarist and good bassist at the same time? And if not, how long should i be playing guitar before i learn bass? more

Resolved Question: Parents: Would You Treat Your Child This Way?

Hi Yahoo'ers! I was eating lunch in a cafe the other day with a friend of mine and it reminded me of an incident that occurred last summer. To fill you in on my story, I play bass in a band. I also give bass lessons. One day, I stopped in the cafe for lunch and I had my bass with me. I should also tell you that I wear a lot of vintage clothing, especially when I'm playing with the band. I was wearing a floral print skirt with a teal strapless top. I also have my bass tattooed on my back, to the right of my left shoulder blade. It goes vertically down my back and is big and beautiful (in fact, I'd just had it re-touched). Well there was a woman in the cafe with her daughter. You know the type, bleach-blonde hair, collagen lips, and I'm guessing she had a boob job too. The type that treats her kid as an accessory (I call those types "Trixie McYuppiemom"). She was yakking on her cel phone and totally ignoring the daughter. The daughter was about 9 years old, would be my guess. So the daughter came over to me and started asking me questions. She told me my dress was pretty and so was my tattoo. She began asking questions about my guitar too. She asked how I liked playing guitar and she said she likes music. I told her, "Well maybe someday you might be interested in learning to play." Just then the mom looked up from her cel phone, ran over and yanked the kid by the arm. She yanked her right out of the cafe. Since my table was by the window, I could see her yelling at the kid (with the cel phone still by her ear, mind you). Then she gave me a dirty look and pulled the kid away. So a couple of days later, again while carrying my bass, I noticed this woman sans child go into the cafe. I followed her in and in the ordering line, she again gave me a dirty look. I told her, "You know, if for one second you'd pay attention to your daughter instead of your g-d cel phone, you might discover she's interested in music lessons. Here's my card!" And I pressed my card in her hand and walked out. Now I'm not a parent (I'm married but I'm unable to have kids). But if I was, I certainly would not treat my child that way. I've had kids approach me and ask me about my bass a couple of times before, but the parent patiently reminded the child not to talk to strangers. The parent also apologized to me for the child bothering me. So parents, what do you think? Would you treat your child this way? Ignore her, then yank her by the arm? How do you react if you see your child talking to a stranger? How do you treat the stranger? Would you treat your child differently if he/she approached a female like me vs. a male? Also, everyone, what do you do if a child you do not know starts talking to you?To Phillip: Did you ever see the movie "Parenthood"? Keanu Reeves (of all people) has the best line in it--"You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, to drive a car - hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father." I'd change that to say, "...let any idiot able to reproduce be a parent". more

Resolved Question: Should I learn bass just so I can become a rock star or is that naive?

Ive been playing guitar for a few months now and know quite abit, practicing 2-3 hours a day, I have the dexterity, I know some theory and I really love playing, however is it stupid to want to change to bass just so Im more likely to get into a band when im older and hopefully make a living out of music? I have heard bass is just as fun as guitar if not more, and I'll still play guitar, just focusing more on bass? So yeah is this a stupid decision?, I know music is more about emotion not just the lifestyle, but I would kill for the lifestyle, it just looks awesome, even if I don't become all that famous. Voting Question: Capable of Berklee College of music?

I believe I do, and also to have a shot at a record deal. 1/585 get one, but let's be honest; Not everyone can play various instruments if any at all. I am currently in high school, and am taking music theory, which by the end of the school year, should pass me through sophomore year theory. I am in the top choir and as of next wednesday, am in national honor society for music "tri-m". I am primary in guitar, but also have played and gained knowledge in drums, piano and bass. I believe that some lessons before I audition will solidify me not only as a musician but also a fluent performer. I like to think I have the potential to learn anything. I also am a songwriter, some wonder how I do it, very flowing and yet to the point. I am a tenor in choir, but also have baseline to help everyone out that needs it. So what do you think? more
