Open Question: Beginner guitar help please.?

Hi, I am attempting to learn how to play the guitarm but due to my diability this is a massive challenge which I am determined to master. I am getting on reasonably well with learning chords and switching between them but I am looking for information on strumming patterns. Is there a standard notation on how you should strum a tune? Open Question: How to play progressive rock on guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, piano, and vocals?

My band right now is playing psychedelic rock, and even though we've kind of moved towards ska-punk and post-hardcore punk on a few occasions, I think it's been a kind of an unspoken agreement that eventually we will be playing progressive rock, when we figure out how. We all try to make that kind of impressive music reminiscent of Rush, Pink Floyd, and The Mars Volta. I know how to play all of these instruments except for trumpet. The trumpet and piano aren't very important in this band, they aren't technically in the band, more like guest musicians. In this band I play drums and I'm usually the lead vocalist, unless the song fits a baritone instead of a tenor, then the guitarist sings instead. We only have one guitarist, but we have written several songs that use two guitars, and when we record them we have the same guitarist just record twice. We all have a pretty advanced grasp of all rock concepts, most musicians should since its likely the easiest genre to play. We have a small amount of blues experience, I've been playing bluegrass and folk-rock in my spare time on guitar, and I'm going to get three guitar books soon, "scales and modes," "jazz guitar," and "blues guitar." We also have a little bit of reggae experience, I know basic ska and reggae techniques or guitar, piano, and drums. So if we're going to be writing progressive rock, is there anything else I should know? Should I be using 2-5-1 progressions like in jazz? How do I combine the different styles that are commonly associated with progressive rock? Should I learn anything about metal, because all I know are power chords and blast beats with metal (and I could pobably figure out the whole drop D tuning thing without much trouble) and I don't know if there's anything else metal-related that progressive bands incorporate into their music? What other techniques should I learn, and should I teach my band members the techniues I learned while playing bluegrass and folk-rock? Any tips on odd time-signatures, in drums I'm fluent with 6/4, 4/4, 3/4, 5/4, 7/4, 9/8, 12/8, 6/8, and 2/4, but on guitar I usually only use 4/4. I own an acoustic guitar, messed-up drumset, and keyboards, should I invest in other instruments to compose this music? Thanks, sorry for the LONG question. more

I've learnt how to tune, hold (properly) and play G major, C major and D major chords (but cant switch between them quickly) on a acoustic guitar. Open Question: How to play surf reggae? Or for that matter how to get better as a band?

I play bass guitar and acoustic guitar (and sometimes hand drums); my friends and I play music together sometimes (maybe 2-3 times a week). We definitely do have some really cool jams; me and one of my friends have gotten pretty good at dueling guitars together; and i have recently developed a pretty good skill for soloing to my amigo's chord progressions. I want us to get better though; and an obvious answer to this would be to practice; but i'm wondering if anyone can relate and give advice of how we could get better (i.e. sources to look at). And i really want to learn how we could play surf reggae- thats my favorite genre. more

Learning how to tune a guitar can greatly improve how you differentiate different kinds of pitches, tones, and scales. One can tune a guitar by ear and also by using an automatic tuner. 3. Third, learn how to read and play chords. learning how to read chords will help you learn the correct positioning of the fingers in order to play properly. Chords can be played by holding the number that represents the fret numbers which can be found on the lines in the tab that represents the string numbers. 4. Finally, learn how to strum a guitar. Make sure that your arm is at the top of the guitar body then gently strum the string and make sure that all strings are ringing clearly. If the strings are strummed too hard, it might produced an undesirable tone. Resolved Question: How do I stop the guitar from making extra noises when I take my lefthand's fingers off the strings?

I recently started learning fingerstyle guitar, but I'm having difficulty making the proper sounds because whenever I lift my lefthand's fingers off the strings, they play open strings. Im learning by myself, and using musictheory.net guitar trainer since i cant afford a tutor, Im playing it for church so ear playing is m ybest bet. I already play a treble clef wind instrument. I generally catch on fast. Resolved Question: Sick of my parents not controlling my crazy 9 year old sister?

my parents let her do anything she wants, all she has to do is cry, scream and stamp her feet. this isnt about me being jealous of her, i'm 14 and very mature compared to my peers. i am forced to teach my sister how to play the guitar alongside her guitar tutor, he has given her a simple version of yellow submarine with 4 chords, G C A7 and D. I can play the full version properly but i'm smart enough not to tell her that the version she is learning is the simple version and sounds nothing like the original song. she is so stubborn that she won't admit that she cannot play the song and needs help, i am more than willing to help her because i love her and have passion for music. i explained to her that we will start off playing it slowly and then speed up and eventually sing along with it, she refused to play it slowly so i asked her if she already knew the song, she screamed yes. so i asked her to play it to me at full speed, she played it with lots of mistakes and not holding each chords for the correct amount of beats. of course i did not tell her that, i praised her and tried to explain that she should try playing it different way. (i think that just made her even more determined that she was correct) it basically ended up with her crying /screaming and slamming the door out of my room. my parents immediately sucked up to her crying act even though there were no tears in her eyes. they genuinely shouted at me and didnt wait for an apology or explanation from me. bad parenting much(?) another example: we were in the home improvement store buying light switches or something. she sees the paint section and runs there, picks a dark blue shade of radiator paint and screams that she wants this paint in her room. her room was painted about a month ago, yet my parents suck up to her and try to convince her that this is radiator paint and you need emulsion for the walls. even though re painting her room is out of the question my parents still negotiate with her!!! we end up buying the correct blue paint. we go home, she screams because she wants to paint her room now. my dad reasons with her and manages to negotiate a later date. an hour later, she screams, my dad paints her room. now i'm 14 and i can understand that if you tell a child that you will do something for them next week and you do it an hour later, you will make them cocky and next time they will know that they can get you to do anything by screaming and stamping their feet. i'm more annoyed with my parents than my sister because they are letting her spiral into this mess. what can i do to convince them and my sister that they need to change their ways.Btw, she is having behaviour problems at school, she has trouble eating so she is underweight, AND she has sleeping problems as she refuses to sleep without my mother sitting next to her. I blame all of this on my parents. I mean cmon, what 9 year old kid cant get to sleep by themselves?I'm asking this here because i love her so much, i cant just sit back and do nothing, but then i cant be rude and try to teach my own parents how to bring us up. more

Voting Question: left or right handed guitar?

now i know this is a question that is asked a lot.. but i want to hear from a person who is left handed person's perspective and plays a guitar, if that's possible or a really experienced guitarist.. i am left handed btw.. i have been playing the guitar right handed now for just about 7-8 months now and i have read a lot of left handers opinion on the internet saying that if they can go back and re-learn the guitar that they would play lefty and these are people who have played for 20+ years.. this caused me to think that i should switch to a lefty while i still have the chance.. i have also read that leftys that play right handed later in experience of playing the guitar, face an obstacle that is hard to overcome, basically that they can no longer go passed that level of skill. and that kinda scared me.. now i know that a left handed guitar are much more expensive and harder to get, but cost or how hard it is to get isnt the issue here, thats why the internets here for.. and i know that i would have to carry my own guitar around if i wanted to play, since guitar players that play left are hard to find.. and i especially know that there is no such thing as a guitar book or tabs that is made for a right handed perspective, thats like saying there a book for left handers to play the piano.. and last thing i know that my left hand will have more strength and dexterity to play complex chords because thats my strong hand.. what do you guys think?? is there like a way you can tell if i should really be playing the left or right handed guitar?? besides that fact that which ever way feels the most comfortable for me?? they both feel comfortable to me.. i can pick faster with my left hand than my right even though i practiced picking with my right hand.. but i can finger pick really really good with my right hand and i cant finger pick with my left.. i clap like a right hander: left hand still and right hand doing the clapping.. i arm wrestle better with my right for some unknown reason and somewhat stronger grip as well.. i drive with my right arm steering the wheel, i cant drive with my left arm.. i open bottle tops with my right hand most of the time.. and the rest pretty much i use my left side: dribbling ball, kicking, strong punch, scissors, cutting/holding knife, writing, etc. more

I have always loved to sing. I have played guitar before and it seems like through playing chords and singing I was able to become an avid player. I have been learning guitar for about 3 months now, however my progress is slow. I practice everyday for 30 minutes or longer and can only play Wild Thing and Adam's Song by Blink-182. I know 12 chords and 2 scales. My practice schedule consists of strumming chords to make sure I can play them right, using a metronome to develop rhythm, and practicing switching between chords. So I'm starting off playing the guitar, love how the solo's sound in like every song (lead guitar gogogo!) , I got an Ibanez RG120 :) anyways, Basically i'm starting out with nothing, well...the instrument and amp yes, but no teacher, and no real knowledge about it. I've learned very little over the course of a few months, because the only thing i do is occasionally look up the tab to a song i like and learn the intro. i only know about 5 or 6. I heard learning chords was number one...however, when i look up how to play songs with chords, i don't understand any of it, and theres always all these "tune your guitar in low E" or odd things liek that, i'm assuming i'm getting too far ahead of myself. I'm thinking about lessons, which woudl be awesome, but if i COULDNT do that....can anyone recommend anything that could help me start? i tend to look at my guitar and say, you have every song in the world in you, i just have to figure out how to get it out... so, any advice...or anything that could get me started, is greatly appreciated. I don't understand the basics of guitar playing. Do you just need to know chords and then strum them out for each song? Or do you have to be able to read sheet music? I'm confused. I would love to learn how to play. more

Voting Question: should i give up learning the electric guitar ?

i picked up a electric guitar. I learned how to get the metal sound with a distortion pedal. I learned how to tune the guitar in normal position "D" and down tuned "C". I am learning a lot of chords by heart the usual open chords and also all those power chords that are so often used in metal such as D5,B5 ect.. Yet i can't play guitar. My hand is not strong enough and i don't know how to make my left hand work correctly i mute strings that should not be mutted. It's frustrating. Lots of theory and little to no play at all. I know how to read music tabs too. I know there is a device available at music store especially to build strengh in the fingers I am inversting lots of money to do tuning on my guitar new bridge,new pots ect.. I would hate not actually learning the guitar. more

Resolved Question: How should i practice guitar?

So im new to guitar, I just bought a Dean Vandetta XMT, and i would like to be able to play metallica songs but I do not have a teacher so i want to start simple and learn how to practice. I suppose I have about 1 hour of time each night to devote to practice, but i was wondering how to practice, like where should i start to learn the fundamentals? what should i do to learn fluid chord switching and stuff? more

Voting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?

I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Resolved Question: Summer job playing guitar?

First of all, I'm 13 years old, and that is a little young to be looking into a summer job. But I'm very motivated and I want to start saving money and doing what I love- playing guitar. I came up with this idea this morning, and while it seems far-fetched, it might just work. I just want to get opinions for people, for example how much I would charge per hour and whether or not you think you would even hire me. Here's the plan: I'm pretty well known in my town for playing guitar and performing. I would do kids' birthday parties, mostly girls' I guess (because of the music I play, and the music i can sing). I can pick up songs really fast if I know the chords played in them and I've at least heard them, so I can learn the popular little girls' songs like Taylor Swift (I already know a lot of her songs), Demi Lovato, and Miley Cyrus, and anything on the top 20 songs of the month. I could have a big list of the songs I can play and the guests can request songs from that list. So, now I need your opinions. If you were the parent of a little girl, maybe aged 6-10, would you hire me (for a comparatively low price) for a "backyard" birthday party? And how do you think I could get the word out? Any suggestions would be great!! And by the way, the artists I listed before are not the artists I play most of the time- no haters, please. more

This is the first chapter of my book. Does it move too fast? I looked up at my wall and let my eyes fill with angry tears. How could he just up and leave? He was a star now, but I missed him. Charles’s picture hung everywhere. I had to be his biggest fan. He was my best friend. He was just a pop star now. I wanted my best friend back. On the posters he was posing, sometimes with his shirt off and his awesome abs showing. My heart pounded hard every time I looked into the eyes of each of his posters. Man, was I in love with him. Charles was coming back though. He was staying for two weeks this summer. Maybe I could convince him to come home permanently. My tears spilt over and I sobbed into my pillow. A knock sounded at my door and I wiped my eyes. “Come in!” I called. The door opened and a familiar face popped in. It was Charles. I jumped off my bed and threw my arms around him. He hugged me to his chest. “Someone’s a big fan,” he put me down. His voice was deeper than it had been six months ago. He walked around my room, looking at each of the posters. “You have nearly every poster made of me,” he turned back to me and hugged me again. “I missed you,” I mumbled. “I missed you too,” he let go of me. He looked over at my guitar. “You started playing?” He smiled at me. I nodded and picked up the guitar. I sat on my bed and adjusted my fingers. “I first saw you under the stars, when I started school In Seymour,” I started strumming the guitar. “I don't tell you how I feel cause . . .” I smiled. “No one is there to help me send.” Charles sat next to me. His foot tapped to the beat and he smiled at my guitar. It was just like his. I changed chords a few times then started the chorus. “I think of you every single day, I think about you everyday. I like how you are a sweet, loving person, it's a pleasure to be sad around you,” this was true for me. This whole song was true, I loved him so much. He was the best friend I met in grade school outside the school at night. Charles was still tapping his foot, but now his hand slapped against his knee to the beat as well. “My life would be complete if we were together. When I started school In Seymour, I could only hope that we could be together. Naivety plaguing me,” I sung louder. Charles’s face was full of approval. Both of his feet tapped in unison, his hand tapped against his knee, and his other hand was resting on my shoulder. “I think of you every single day, I think about you everyday. I like how you are a sweet, loving person. A fight here or there but they weren’t that bad,” I strummed the guitar on my last chord and looked over at Charles again. “Wow,” he chuckled. I blushed and took out a small book from under my mattress. “These are my songs,” I handed it to him. He flipped through the book and smiled at me. “Wow, you wrote all of these while I was gone?” he got up and looked around my room again. “I didn’t notice a few minutes ago, but you changed your room since I was last here. Besides the posters I mean,” he looked at my bed. I had changed the covers from blue to red, one of my favorite colors. “Yeah, and I got a new desk, and added a couch in the corner,” I pointed to the couch. “Do you think you could teach me that song you were singing? I’d like to learn it,” he plopped down on my couch. I shrugged and nodded, looking into his hazel eyes. His brown hair was neatly cut, like it had been before he left. I was glad that there was one thing that didn’t change about him. I stared into his eyes for the longest time. I didn’t really notice when he got up and waved a hand in front of my face. I shook my head and blinked a few times, trying to clear my head. “You okay?” he sat down next to me again. “Yeah,” I took a deep breath. “Here, let me teach you some of the chords,” I adjusted my fingers on the strings again. “Not right now. Your graduation is tomorrow, right?” he leaned against my headboard. “Yeah,” I leaned my guitar against the wall and pulled my knees up to my chest. “Well, I have an early graduation gift for you,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out a little box. He handed it to me and I opened it. It was a little bracelet in it with my name on it. “Do you like it?” he slipped it onto my wrist. My name, Elizabeth, was carved into the silver. “I love it,” I gasped. He patted my hand and leaned back against the headboard again. We talked for a while, catching up on what he had been doing in Hollywood and what he was doing after he left. It pained me to know he was leaving in only two weeks. “You know, I’m going on a world tour when I leave. I’m going to Hollywood first to pack though, then I’m going to Italy, Japan, China, Russia, then tour around here,” he tucked his arms behind his head. “Really?” my heart hammered in my chest. I wasn’t going to see him for ages. He nodded. “Yep,” he got up and leaned against the wall. “I really don’t like being a pop star sometimes. She dumped me right before I came here. I told her I was excited to come here because I would get to see you, then she dumped me,” he wiped his eyes. “It’ll be okay,” I patted his shoulder. “Thanks,” he smiled. more

I am an intermediate guitar player, I play in my schools jazz band and can sight read most of the stuff we play after I learn the chords for the songs we play, when I solo, throw in licks and stuff like that I don't play the scales your supposed to play with the chords I play what feels right, In rock I am pretty accomplished though I'm not sure what the whole thing behind it is, I've never really learned a lot of songs in it the songs I do know are -Crazy Train Ozzy Osbourne -Enter Sandman Metalica -JEssies Girl rick springfield -Summer of 69 bryan adams -Hero Nickleback -you shook me all night long ACDC and I know more intros to songs than I can count not to brag either but I'm a great imrpovist MY question is how do I advance my playing, I know like one scale by heart a bunch of chords well enough that I might have to check my fingerings every once in a great while, but how do I advance my playing I'm not sure in whichc direction to go! I want to get to the level wehre I know enoguh that I can compose my own songs but I want to take the right journey, so what should I do to make my playing better, learning songs isn't my main goal, but it wouldn't be bad, so what should I do to imrpove my playing?
