Learn How To Play Guitar On The Internet Questions asked

Resolved Question: Is it okay to practice the guitar all day?

I'm at my first year in Medical School, and fortunately we don't have summer classes in our school. I have started practicing the guitar using the "Jamorama" tutorial, and I have been going at it at all my waking moments (almost 8 hours a day). I am concerned with the adverse effects of continuous practicing like carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, etc.. So to remedy that I pace my practice sessions and I do finger exercises on the fretboard when I feel that my fingers are no longer limber. My usual pattern is: 1 hour practice then a 15-30 minute break. I don't feel any bumps or painful spots along my hand. And after sleeping my hands are still able to play like before. I really would like to learn how to play the guitar after our 2 month vacation. After our vacation my attention will all be focused on my medical studies. which explains the pace of my practice sessions. I've searched the internet about this and I haven't found a good schedule to follow for this kind of intensive study. Thank you for replying and for the help. more

Voting Question: I'm searching for random best...things. Is there such a site?

Is there a site where people can post any knowledge they think is great to have. And other people can rate the posts on how great the knowledge is. hmm, how to make this really clear.. For example: I find a great way to learn how to play guitar, and want to share that technique. I can post it on that site and my technique will be rated. But also when I find a very useful piece of software, or a very beautiful picture, a great restaurant in hawaï, anything. I guess I'm basically looking for a site that rates the entire internet. more

Voting Question: left or right handed guitar?

now i know this is a question that is asked a lot.. but i want to hear from a person who is left handed person's perspective and plays a guitar, if that's possible or a really experienced guitarist.. i am left handed btw.. i have been playing the guitar right handed now for just about 7-8 months now and i have read a lot of left handers opinion on the internet saying that if they can go back and re-learn the guitar that they would play lefty and these are people who have played for 20+ years.. this caused me to think that i should switch to a lefty while i still have the chance.. i have also read that leftys that play right handed later in experience of playing the guitar, face an obstacle that is hard to overcome, basically that they can no longer go passed that level of skill. and that kinda scared me.. now i know that a left handed guitar are much more expensive and harder to get, but cost or how hard it is to get isnt the issue here, thats why the internets here for.. and i know that i would have to carry my own guitar around if i wanted to play, since guitar players that play left are hard to find.. and i especially know that there is no such thing as a guitar book or tabs that is made for a right handed perspective, thats like saying there a book for left handers to play the piano.. and last thing i know that my left hand will have more strength and dexterity to play complex chords because thats my strong hand.. what do you guys think?? is there like a way you can tell if i should really be playing the left or right handed guitar?? besides that fact that which ever way feels the most comfortable for me?? they both feel comfortable to me.. i can pick faster with my left hand than my right even though i practiced picking with my right hand.. but i can finger pick really really good with my right hand and i cant finger pick with my left.. i clap like a right hander: left hand still and right hand doing the clapping.. i arm wrestle better with my right for some unknown reason and somewhat stronger grip as well.. i drive with my right arm steering the wheel, i cant drive with my left arm.. i open bottle tops with my right hand most of the time.. and the rest pretty much i use my left side: dribbling ball, kicking, strong punch, scissors, cutting/holding knife, writing, etc. more

Resolved Question: how can i learn guitar tabs to unknown/indie artists?

I have always loved to sing. I have taken guitar lessons for about 5 years but hit a dead end because i just wasn't recieveing what i craved for in music anymore. i have been trying to cover a bunch of my favorite artist to gain inspiration but, being indie bands, their music is not tracable via internet or music books. i am becoming increasingly frustrated that i can't figure out what notes they are playing on the guitar. does anyone have suggestions for how i can learn the tabs?? i have tried by ear and can figure out simple chords and strumming patterns but have trouble with fingerpicking patterns. any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! thanks so much!! :) more

Voting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?

I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Sorry for the really long wall of text!I know a lot of guitar chords already. Not just the like seven essenial ones but several advanced onesand power chords, what I have trouble with is single noes and barre chords. Also, recommending thins because they'll take me farther if I play it in a band doesn't really make a difference, I already both play drums and sing in a band, I wouldn't be playing any of these other instruments in a band, I'd only use them to compose the songs for the other band members. more

Resolved Question: Is there something wrong with my violin?

I recently decided I would like to learn to play the violin. Luckily, my grandma had one in her house that nobody ever used, so she is letting me borrow it so I can see what I can do with it. I have not invested in any official lessons yet because right now I just want to mess around with it. Everything I have learned so far I have learned from the internet. My problem is, I don't know how old this violin is, when or by whom it was last used, and I have no idea if anything is wrong with it. It's an Antonius Stradivarius 1721 replica. My grandma says she had it restrung and the bow hair replaced about two or three years ago. I've tuned it to the best of my ability with a guitar tuner, so I'm fairly certain it's in tune. Also, I found a small rock-hard cake of rosin in the case (about the size of three or four quarters stacked on top of each other), so I scratched the top of it up with a screwdriver head and applied the rosin to the bow for about 5 minutes. The case looks like it's a hundred years old, and my grandma has a thing for antiques, so this thing may be really old. It's fairly dusty. When I draw the bow across the strings, it makes sound, and I can play the G major scale intelligibly, but something about the tone isn't right. It's scratchy and airy where I expected it to be clear and warm. I hold the bow like I learned from the internet, which feels awkward but I guess I'll eventually get used to it. I draw the bow perpendicularly to the strings. I've tried using all, 3/4, and half of the bow hair, and I find that using less hair makes the sound a little better, but still not what I want. I've tried bowing at all different speeds, but that does little to help. I learned not to apply much pressure and to just let the bow glide across the strings. So what could be the reason for this tone? Do I need to change the strings? Maybe just clean them? Do I need to apply more rosin to the bow? Is my rosin too old? Do I need to have the bow rehaired? Is it just my lack of skill? Does every violinist start out like this? more

Resolved Question: Learning Guitar 100% alone,?

I've been messing around with a guitar for something like 8 months now and finally decided I wanted to learn how to play it for reals. I haven't learned shit. I can play the C minor scale, whoopee. The problem now is, I can't hang out with my friends who play instruments anymore unless they come to my house and I live 45 mins away. I can't find ANYTHING helpful on the internet that doesn't cost money ( broke too ). Anyway, enough about that. On to the questions. Should I feel bad that I can't come up with anything that sounds good on a well tuned guitar? This is what I seriously don't understand. I use chords and keep in mind the steps and other crap, but nothing sounds even minutely good at all. This has been driving me insane. Sometimes simply plucking a string becomes difficult and I don't get this. I can't describe anything I have come up with since the guitar was tuned to drop C as anything but utter failure. I can do squealies but can't find anything to put them in. I'd like to just forget about all this and find a new starting point if anyone has any ideas. If I have to just sit and play it till I figure it out i will most definitely continue giving that a shot, but I'd love to have something to go off of.. more

Resolved Question: What makes a guitar chord a 9th?

I know how to make the chords and play them when needed. I am a self taught guitar player and recently have started trying to learn theory. There is not any information, that I have found, on the internet that really explains this. Resolved Question: How to stop? Please help me!?

I asked more questions about it, but now I'm going to put all the questions together in this question, so sorry for the other questions. All the answers you already gave me were very useful! I also want to pay more attention on my hobby's, like writing poems and learning to play the guitar. I'm also very often touching my penis till I get an erection. Is this normal? How can I stop this and pay more attention on my hobby's? It's very hard for me to stop with computing. Not only because of the wrong pictures I'm searching for, but computing is also one of my hobby's. I want to talk about sex with people I know, with people who are older than me, like my parents. How can I start a conversation like this? I also want to put pictures from nice girls in my diary (no porn!), is this normal? do I have to tell anyone I'm doing this? Please keep helping me, how more answers, how better it is. Philip (sorry for my bad English) p.s. I'm a christian :) more

Resolved Question: Help picking a college major?

I really need some help picking the right college major for me; whenever I ask our college counselors, they seem to direct you to what’s going to make you the most money- regardless if you are interested or not. I know I’m throwing myself to the bowels of the internet, but here it goes: I’m not sure what exactly I wish to do. All I’ve known is that I wish to be an entrepreneur of sorts- however, college isn’t necessary for that, so I didn’t want to choose the generic Business major (no offense to those who did). I excelled in high school whenever I tried (or whenever I wasn’t lazy), particularly in English and History. I’m interested in Computers and Technology, but I’m shying away from some of the math/science-heavy degree plans. It’s not that I’m bad at math; whenever I actually did my homework or studied, I made As and Bs, and whenever I fucked around I got C+ or Fs (or Ds depending on where you live). It’s that I don’t find math “fun” or “interesting”, like I see so many others do. While I can tolerate mathematics and sciences, I question whether or not I will enjoy a career in this field. Not only that, but when it comes to programming one doesn’t need to go to school to learn that craft- there’s a dozens of books in which you can teach yourself at your own pace. Most job openings even say “Bachelor in Computer Science or related knowledge.” I’ve been tooling around with programs like Photoshop and Paint.net for years, with designs and image altering for various people. I also used to make little “Sprites” and games using the “RPG Maker” engine when I was 10. I’m not a pro at it, but its something that I enjoyed doing whenever I had the vision. The downside is that my “skill” is purely digital, and that I suck ass at drawing (that can be changed with practice, though,so that's not an argument). I do enjoy playing video games, and I have for years; however, the same issues I have with this major is the same as I do with the previous major. I love music. Plain and simple. I wish to take music theory classes and learn how to play the piano and the guitar to better my skills. I have aural abilities and I can sing. Whenever the motivation, I like to write. I’ve been free writing since I was a kid, and I have mounds of fiction short stories to various amounts of poems. I developed the interest of film and screenwriting when I was a kid, so I’ve always had an interest in the arts and in entertainment since a kid. Of course, the downside to that is the lack of careers choices that come with Music majors and English majors. I have no desire to teach whatsoever, and I have no long history of playing any instrument- so anything musical would be for my own benefit. I’d hate to go major in English then say 5 years later “I can’t find a good job in this field.” And with film comes the dozens of people who pursue their dreams and come back with absolutely nothing. I don’t care about “fame”, but I’d rather not be assed out, you know? As you can see, I have a multitude of ideas with little to no idea how to put these plans in action. Ultimately, I want to go to school to learn something I normally couldn’t on my own that would give me an edge, but I don’t want to major in something that’ll be a complete waste of time, nor just do something for the money. I mean, if I get the money, that’s all great too… Anyway, I know I’m throwing myself to the sharks here, but: What do you think I should major in? Inb4 any memes. Also, don’t give me that “do what you love to do” crap. I’m not asking you this question for a generic answer that I can get from the nearest homeless man. And if there is a way to somehow combine all of these, let me know! more

Resolved Question: Les Paul vs Strat. How come they never told me?

I've played Strat and super Strat style guitars (25.5 neck, XJ frets) for 20 years. I recently bought a Les Paul copy (24.75 scale neck Jumbo/Medium frets) and I am floored. Further research shows me thatthis is a standard... you either have a Les Paul neck (Les Paul copies, SG copies, Explorer copies) or a strat neck (everything else) and your playing style will gravitate naturally toward one or the other. Starting as a metal player (and since branching to everything else) I've always been recommended strat-style guitars (THIS is for metal). With the advent of the internet, I am realizing how totally untrue this paradigm is... people play what they like, regardless of musical style. The more I play this guitar, the more I realize I've been playing the wrong guitars for 20 years! To this day, I have to tell people I am a blues or jazz guitarist to have them recommend a 24.75-necked guitar. I and many others have no trouble shredding or jamming on the J/M frets. So you don't get the full 24 frets. You can bend that last full step, if you absolutely need to. So WHY does this dichotomy still exist? And even further, why does no one tell you that this prejudice exists? Since the electric guitar comes in only two basic setups, how come no one ever explains this? If I were trying to help a novice (as anyone would want to) this is the first part of guitar selection I explain. It makes people's who learning process easier. Since developing your personal preferences is always a 'find what you like and stick with it' kind of thing, how come no one ever brings this aspect of guitar selection up? I feel like I just reached the 24th rank of Freemasonry or something by learning this very basic aspect of guitar construction after 20 years of living with the instrument. Thanks Sal. I always appreciate your input. I don't know if you can really count the PRS guitars. It's like the Schecters where they put a 25.5 on a Les Paul body (sacrilege! I know!) And a LOT of it is perception... you know, the old "neck thrus have better sustain! thing that has yet to be proven. I see punk guys play semi-hollows, so I try not to get stuck in the fiddy-duddy stuff. But the fact that nobody ever even mentioned this to me (sure I noticed there were different necks, but I never thought it was such a standardized thing!) just blows me away. more

I have a husband on hospice and 2 kids I'm guardian of that are on mental meds. The school system does not like dealing with these types of kids, so I am now homeschooling them. They do have a teacher 5 days a week and 1 hour a day and are now learning something. It's very hard to be in my shoes and i have let myself get depressed from time to time. I, as well as anyone out there have one thing in common. It's callled fight back or let the world consume you. I play guitar, draw, talk to people on the internet about their lives and how exciting they are. Visiting an old folks home and talking to the elderly is very funny and helpful to all. It takes your mind off of you. Pretty soon, you won't even notice that you were depressed at all!!!! more

I'm a beginning guitarist. I've been playing for about 2 months. All I want to know is what the chords are and how to play them in the intro of the song "Watch Over You" by Alter Bridge. Tabs that I find on the internet look confusing when I just want to learn something that seems so simple. Can anyone please explain the chords and chord changes and strumming pattern in an easy way? more

Resolved Question: guitar for beginners?

i saved enough money for the fender strat pack at Costco, and now that i have it, i don't know how to use it. i've tried looking up stuff on the internet, but even for beginners they still use these fancy terms that i've never heard of. is there some electric guitar for dummies website i can go to?i really want to learn, but i have no money for lessons. i got this book of scores for 80s and 90s rock, but i don't know any notes...help?! i'm hopelessly lost. p.s. i play the trumpet, so i'm not completely incompetent...i know how to read music (ex: dynamics, coda, ritardando, legato, staccato, etc) i just know nothing about guitar. more

Resolved Question: I need help...I'm teaching myself how to play the guitar...?

I've just started learning this week and have a question... I have this book for beginners and have been using it as a guide. But I have a problem. Today, I learned the notes on the third string, G and A. But there's a G on the first string....How do you know which one to use when reading music? And I was kind of looking around on the internet and found tabs. They look soooo different than just regular music sheets. Do you learn one or the other? Or both? Any other tips would be excellent! Thanks. :) more

Voting Question: A question about chords when you search them for a song online?

Okay, so I searched chords for a song I want to learn how to play and I'm really confused. I'm a beginner trying to learn on books and the internet (I don't really know where to get fairly priced lessons in my area). So I searched the chords for Hey Soul Sister by Train and here's the first line: E B C#m A Your lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left side brains Okay, so I'm confused. Why is there a chord every few words?? How is the guitar consistent throughout the whole line if there's just a chord every few words? Can someone explain? I know I sound pretty stupid asking this but I don't know anyone that plays guitar that can explain it to me. Please and thanks! more

Resolved Question: How to avoid bad bass guitar habits?

alright basically im learning bass and iv glanced round the internet and yahoo answers but cant find my answer. i know every musician grows in his/her own ways and adapts their style of playing to their instrument. but obviously there is a certain amount of MUSTS that every bass player (in my case) follows. so just one or two basic questions 1) where should my plucking hand rest? 2) is there an ideal way to use your fingers to play on the frets? (IE making chords or just go at a random pattern) 3) what are some good warmups? im guessing just some scales 4)sometimes when i pluck a note i tend to allow the string to hit off the board is this alright, or should i only do that when playing something heavy like Around The World by RHCP (of course i wont be able to play that song for a while but thats just an example) thanks for the answers in advance more

Voting Question: What do you think of this idea, and how can I make it work?

I plan to surprise my boyfriend for our one year anniversary of dating by playing (and possibly singing) the song Hey There Delilah on guitar. It is kind of "our song" and he has told me he wants to learn it someday. I am new at guitar and have been learning through the internet for 2 weeks. I can play the first couple notes but at this point the whole song looks daunting. I don't sing very well but hopefully i can get the hang of it. what do you think of the idea? any tips on self-taught guitar or singing? more

Resolved Question: Guitar players; help?

I'm confused; is the string at the top (the thickest string) string 1, or string 6? And in the notes diagram (where you see which notes to play), is the column at the left string 1 or string 6? I know these are very stupid questions that supposedly everyone knows, but we have a guitar (and no one really knows how to play it), and I thought that maybe I could learn a little about it, like the basics. So I looked some stuff up on the internet, but it never sais which string is which.... help? more
