Open Question: How can I increase plucking speed on my electric guitar?

I've been teaching myself to play various kinds of guitar (bass, electric, classical) for about tree weeks now, and I'm actually half decent, and I've been learning the song 'sailor's hornpipe' (the Mike Oldfield Version) which starts off slow but ends up going ridiculously fast. Being a Grade 5 cellist, I have no problems keeping up with my left hand (the one on the fretboard), but I cant keep up with the plucking at the faster bits, is there any technique that I am missing to help speed up the plucking hand (right hand) . for people who do not know the song, here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRVt4EOOfQ8 And here are the tabs: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/mike_oldfield/sailors_hornpipe_ver2_tab.htm P.S. I don't use picks, as I cant get the hang of them, and they are just too slow more

Open Question: Poll: Have you heard the song "Stairway to Heaven"? And the solo?

Learned it note for note, and HAVE had it in my back pocket since the summer of 1977 when my cousin originally laid it out for me in like a 3 part process; and it worked really good I think...I don't normally give guitar lessons; however, in '97, someone that caught us while making a living on the road,,approached me and asked IF, I would be interested in teaching him...22year old dude from Chicago,,,name J.T..(We are still friends to this day),, but anyway,,, I didn't think he was ready really and I was actually right; but when I got home to south lake tahoe, Ca where AM not living at this particular time; but usually DO, as it is my home, and have lived there just up from the clubs @ the Nevada/California state line...So,, after a couple of weeks,,I get a call from J.T..who thought he'd move on out to Tahoe.. Big change for him being from the south part of chicago...but he had a love of the blues..and my cousin who IS a blues man..(Lonnie Mack)..Lonnie did make a regular stop at "Legends"..(Buddy's joint), and JT saw us there,,,although, he just happend upon me, at a booth, foolin' with someone's accoustic,,,and trying to get it to take a tuning,,and stay... So, I was using "Stairway to heaven" as a "control"...and he heard me..and I CAN imitate J. Page's version And one of my own,,and have actually been doing it since high school in the mid '70's when I'd play the whole tune,,,about 12 or 13 minutes long when laid down properly,,,and sang with the right "Feel",,etc...I have actually officially taught that song to about 5 people in the last 30+ years,,,and the last one WAS J.T,,,and he paid me a total of $750.00, but I had to give him a whole new way of aproaching the instrumant,,,And "Undo" some really bad habits that he'd picked up somewhere;;So, we spent a good 3 weeks 'De-Programming" his incorrect aproach to the guitar in general,,,as it prevented him from being able to "Move on" alone..and teach himself stuff, and he couldn't grasp what changes, and how subtle, and chilly the whole mellow thing was, when it came to getting his abiltiy to play with a, or as part of, maybe is what I meant to say.. of a Unit...or team,,,and if enough "Nare-Do-Wells" showed up in the same place, then maybe even a quick "Thow-it-together band"...and I even layed out the basics or the basic Nashville picker's # system that they,,them..and I'm not ashamed to say I myself have better success with that old number way of dealing with other players..it's just a better way... You know what i'm talking about,,??? Like if we didn't know each other; but we could still just walk on each other's bandstand and earn a night's work because of the # system...?? Like,,I turn to you and simply say: this song's an Old Merle Haggard thing called "Footlights",,,(for the "Chance that you Might already know of the song..what it sounds like, or anything at all that could help...),,,so,,let's say you say "I'm not a walking, fossil steve,,and I have never heard of your ancient monk's chant......So,, we're lucky 'cause even though I don't actually read music near well enough to be of any practical use when entertaining for paychecks and percs....BUT..I can look at you and even if it's noisy and wildly busy in the club...we will be fine, even without ever having practiced together at any time in the past..I'll say,,,"Merle's Footlights"..in "D",,, go 1, 4, 5, with a 7th,,,get "Out of the way" for a lead break that my Telecaster Master over there's going to ease into from HIS que, that's coming from Bob,,"Grizzly" Smith,,,my Pedal Steel Guitar genious...(Watch out though; as this only applies with Bob, during actual sets throughout the night, and the genious thing will go away later,,,and the opposite effect replaces the other...Anyway,,,after the Guitar's lead break,,there's one verse, and one more run at the chorus..however?? just as Steve wraps his solo,,we're going to modulate on full step...alright with that so far??? Remember,,we started in "D"..right?? So,,You must also either be a, or become a,,singer of harmony parts,,as I'm not going to take bread out of our pockets just because one of us can't sing harmony...You'll find that to be the case in virtually every situation, where there's a club owner, and pickers, that do it as thier sole form of making a living.. So,,back to the quick rundown for the opening number of the nights 3rd set.. after the lead break, there's a full step modulation, You sing 5th part with me on the very last 2 lines of the song...And just follow, and watch my eyes,,,and within' a week or so we'll sound like we've been playing with one another for many years... Right on/??? Anyway...that's pretty much what J.T got for the "Really just sybolic" 500 bones..(I always get something out of teaching a pretty much of complete beginner what I've been toiling with since the summer of '68, when I was 7 years old,,and got my 1st electric guitar at the "Flea Market" in San Jose', CA,,, for 20 bucks,,,An old "Kay",,and an old SearsSilvertone amp..1/12,,and almost no controls, of any kind... So,,I've got "some" experience under my belt that does tend to make things easier not for me only,, but everbody leans on me from time to time, and It 'doesn't bother me man.. Who do I think I am anyway??? You know what I'm sayin'.. we're all in it to sound FANTASTIC, and for the drunks, and customers,,,to drink more,,and more,, that's what we're technically there for...it helps to remember that..And if your thinking "Oh **** that,,I don't want to deal witht that ****...here's the thing that real music player's must face sooner or later..and that's "Do you want to do this for your weekly bread,,,pay your bills, and send the kids to school, etc..??? Or,, do you want to work at K-Mart,,and meet us on Friday & Saturday ONLY??? Well,, then sorry dude; gotta let you go on your way..because we've chosen to do this for more money than Sears can pay us for selling new tires,,or working at some "Jive-Turkey" music store,,pedaling stripedaling strings and giving away picks to Johnny the Trombone student that hangs out at the store, pounding on one of the Drum Kits until we all want to choke the little turd,,and his trombone... I choose to show up for 4, maybe 5 sets a night,,,4,,maybe 5 nights a week.. Scale's usually around $500.00 a week these days; although I make Much Much, more when we hit the road,,,,that's a whole nuther trip,,,Are you through with this email now??? Steve with the Stairway to Heaven Licks, & tricks... elcamaro72@hotmail.com Bear in mind man; I wasn't able to read your whole email...and took you to be pretty much a novice learner young player..No offense...I came back and used the "Edit" thing on here to help me explain why this letter is so ,well,,the way it is...I was worried that you wouldn't follow my "Jive talkin',,which I tend to do..(I still call pickers "Cats" sometimes... I know I am a dinosaur, and that I'm one for the road... but,,that's show biz,,,Right?? One thing..zzzwhy I"mOne thing..zzzwhy I"m back here...I have been laying that Stairway lick..well, all the licks,,of all the different parts of the song as it winds it's way all the way to "And she's buying a Stairway.......to...hea.....vennnnnn/// ziiiiiiiiiipzaaaaaaaaaaptidahdahdaydadad… whatever..I'm kind of "Bozo'd" tonight man... but; my 1st reaction when I read your whole email was "NO, NO,,it's NOT that hard man,,, however..even in your email,,you remind me that '1977 was a little over 30 years ago,,,,and once the "Cat was out of the bag"...that I knew that particular tune, the WAY I did,, well, you can imagine what happens next... before you know it the same clown is standing on a cocktail table howling "FREEBIRD" over and over; and I usually give in to that request as well. As it took Almost as long to learn the proper way to deliver that beautiful song without wrecking it... "Less is more" if you can dig what I'm shoveling on that line of thought..?? It's always been about the quality for me..and my family..of which almost all play for thier bread. And have as long as my memory's started forming...so,,,"FreeBird" was a "Must Learn" for me back then too.. BUT,,I have some how lost my "Feel",,and I can't get a decent "Freebird" out of the old wooden box without a month or so to "Woodshed" ...all of them for that matter... I'm zipped man... email me IF perhaps you want to discuss any other musical interests's ,,as I have a few of my own lately and not a soul that has the foggiest idea what I'm "Lippin'" about.. Later man! Halsey... more

Open Question: Is it possible to learn guitar and piano at the same time without a teacher?

I just started learning how to play some songs on guitar (by YouTube tutorials) but I also really like piano, I have a begginner book and I have learned how to play some songs out of it (it wasn't that hard cuz I already knew how to read music cuz I used to play clarinet and oboe) but it seemed like everyone says piano is harder than guitar but for me it has been opposite, is that just because I'm a begginner? Also I want to take guitar lessons this summer, but I also wanna learn piano, would it be too much to learn them both at the same time? Could I possibly self-teach myself one of them? If so which one? more

Resolved Question: Piano by ear please help?

Okay i always get told you need to no the key of a song to be able to play it by ear I figured out the key of a certain song i wanted to learn was in the key of G major so does this mean i have to find the melody from the notes in the key of G major for example G, A, B, C, D, E, F♯, G , also will the bass notes be in the same key, also will the chords be in the key of G, Also i wanted to know, i already no all my basic chords and some advanced chords but say i wanted to just play a part with chords only, how can i make it sound better because when playing chords on my guitar you can strum up and down altering the sound but on a piano it just repeats. more

Resolved Question: I've come up with the most romantic idea ever and with it I'll confess my feelings but does she feel the same?

Me and my gf have been dating for almost 7 months now. Everything is going great and she is definitely the most amazing girlfriend I've ever had hands down. I'd totally describe her but that won't exactly pinpoint how I feel about her. Before I questioned it but now I'm certain... I'm definitely falling in love with her and at this point I don't want to just randomly toss those words around. I'm afraid i'll end up ruining what we have. But i decided that life's too short and even if she doesn't love me back I'm going to tell her how I feel; what the hell might as well cause holding it in ain't easy. But the thing is I'm not just going to randomly tell her I decided I am going to do it the best way I can and make it special. SO I learned how to play 1234 by Plain White t's on my acoustic guitar and I sing and play for her on her birthday in May. I'm also gonna take her to a romantic place of course lol. I'm putting LOTS of time into learning this song for her and tell her I lvoe her through the song. Ready for the bad part? We've had this conversation about love before and well, frankly, let's just say it didn't go well. Well it did at the time because I didn't love her then and she clearly flat out told me she doesn't love me(we had this conversation around our 4th or 5th month). Now I'm in no rush like I said, I'm perfecting this song for her and everything. But now I'm confused.... What bugs me is she said that she doesn't feel that way about me but i'm honestly confused on whether or not she feels the same. I feel like she'll really appreciate the time I put into this song for her, but unfortunately I just don't know if she even feels the same. One day though i managed to spot the word "love" in her prettiest handwriting written on her inner thigh very lightly. I didn't say anything because well I thought I was just makin a big deal outta nothin. My theory is maybe she got bored and ddid it. But it was in her best handwriting that I've ever seen and... why would she take the time to randomly do that? I'm just going to tell her through the song like I said. I know she'll love it. But what scares me is the fact that she might not love me back and I'm afraid I'll lose her after I say it through the song. We will have been dating for almost 9 months when I finally do this. So yea. Do you guys think theres A possibility she loves me back? more

Open Question: I need some electric guitar playing tips from expert players, please help me?

Ok, im not a beginnier or a newbie, but im about intermediate. I play thrash metal, speed metal or just basic heavy metal riffs. Ive been playing guitar for about a year now. Acoustic guitar since march 09, but electric only for about 7-8 weeks. And im pretty good, just i need some tips to perfect my playing. My main problem is too much pick up sound, its not that its to sensitive, i dont think, its just ive been noticing, when my finger leaves a fret, i get the open string sound, so if im playing a fast and complex song, it sometimes sounds like a load of noise because when im trying to play the tabs for the songs, theres other noise coming from the pick ups. I know theres a technique that can help me solve this. Im practicing 1-2 hours a day. Minimum i play a day is 30 mins. Please dont tell me to learn palm muting, ive learn that, thats a pretty simple skill although it maybe similar to the technique i need to learn to stop the sound coming from the string. imagine this. Im playing a song, and when i play a note, it normally sounds fine, but when im playing a song, and one of the frets i use is on a higher string, when i play the note, and my finger comes of the string, it makes a noise as if i was performing a pull-off. How do i stop this? Its not that much of a problem if im playing quite a few notes on the same string, but on some of the songs i play, if i play a fret on a higher string, and go back down to the lower stings, i obviously take my finger off the fret on the higher sting, but it makes a pull off noise. Im sorry, im rambling and your probably like... wah, um ok. But im sure the experts will be able to give me some advice. thanks for reading. more

Resolved Question: How do you learn songs by ear on the guitar?

I just can't do it. I listen to what it is I want to play over and over again and when I go to play it, I have no idea where to play those notes. The same goes for improvising, my guitar teacher said that when you improvise you have to listen in your head to what you want to play next then play it. I know exactly what i want to play but I have no idea where to play and what frets to hit. more

Resolved Question: Can I learn to play piano through chords?

Hello, I am a beginning to play piano and I am planning on teaching myself how to play it. I have played guitar before and it seems like through playing chords and singing I was able to become an avid player. Do you think it is possible to learn piano through playing song chords and singing will become effective? I planned to just start off with a song I like and play chords, hoping that I will soon catch on to the rhythm and have a good piano/singer combination. Thank you for your help :)I only want to be efficient enough at piano to accompany my voice. If there are any other techniques to learn piano w/o a teacher, I am open to suggestions. :) more

Voting Question: everything i need to know about my guitar?

Hey, I JUST started guitar, a week and a half ago. I have an acoustic guitar, a Jasmine. is that brand good? my guitar strings are somewhat rusted and VERY hard to push which kinda sucks, but i researched it and i think i just need new strings if that doesn't work i will get my truss rod checked out. so far I have learned knocking on heavens door and am learning hurt by johnny cash. I also play a twelve string for better sound on knocking on heavens door, but hurt is harder on a twelve string, therefor need to replace the strings on the 6 strings, is there any tips i can get on how to take care of it? or some real easy songs on acoustic to learn after hurt? and any suggestions on the string gauge? will light be too much of an annoying sound? or will it still sound good enough to play? more

Voting Question: Help me with the band issue will ya?

Maddi- Guitarist, vocals, ? Jori- Drummer, vocals Ursula- Keyboard, vocals, ? A typical band consists of a guitarist, a drummer, a singer, and a bassist... Ursula, to me, should learn how to play bass.. Since Maddi already knows guitar, she has no reason to learn bass.. and keyboard's not the most important thing in the world. And because we have no bass player, don't you think it would just seem more reasonable for Ursula to learn, rather for us to have no guitarist? I hope that made sense..... Plus, don't you always hear the guitar in a song? And most of the time, the bass? The guitar, the drums, AND the bass are really important. I'm pretty sure we'll eventually all learn bass, guitar, and drums. But, I think it's more important to have our main parts. Not all songs require a keyboard, but most songs require drums, bass, and guitar. This probably sounds like I'm babbling, but I'm trying to get across my reasoning. Maddi's still learning guitar, I mean, she knows most of it, but not ALL of it. Don't you think it would just be easier for Maddi to stay on guitar, Ursula to learn bass, and me to keep on drumming? Alsoooo... It would be harder for Maddi to learn bass because the bass is a whole different clef.... - Jori I,Ursula, think that Maddi should be the bass player. I think this because, to me, the keyboard DOES play an important role in our band. With the similarities of a bass and guitar, I think that Maddi will find it easier to play bass, rather than I having to learn the strings, and the keyboard. Like Maddi not being able to play both at the same time, I can't play keyboard and bass at the same time either. Not all of our songs will have a keyboard, but not all of our songs will have a guitar either. - Ursula HELLLLP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!… more

Voting Question: What do you think of my second chapter?

When Charles calmed down from crying, we went to the park. We took my guitar so that we could play some songs in my book. Charles sung me a song that he had written on the plane. “During past relationships, nothing has been right. Are the stars out tonight?” he strummed on my guitar. “In my relationships, I just feel like I'm a child,” his voice rung in the air. “Until then,” he paused. People were passing by, some smiling, recognizing their former classmate. Some sat on the grass across from us and they listened carefully. “I love how much you care. Your body, beautiful smile, and hair,” he looked at me instead of his fans. “I loved it when things were normal and we could just hang out. That was all I was thinking about.” His eyes were soft as he stared into mine. My heart raced as I listened to the crowd whispered with excitement. “The perfect date will be when we're alone. To me, I can only hope that we can be together, forever,” his eyes were so beautiful. I couldn’t help but scoot closer to him. “I love how much you care, how you're always there. I love it when things were normal and we could just hang out. That was all I was thinking about,” he strummed the guitar a few more times. “Wow,” I whispered. Was he in love with me? Did he write that song for me? I thought. He had written in on his way to see me. “Do you like it?” he smiled. I nodded and looked down at my hands, he touched my hand and held it gently in his own. My face heated up and my heart beat faster. I looked up and Charles looked concerned. I tried to calm my shallow breathing and swallowed. “You okay?” he touched my cheek and I immediately flamed up again. He pulled his hand away and stared into my eyes. I shook my head and looked away. “Of course,” I got up. Charles stood up too and hugged me to his chest. I buried my face in his shirt as he squeezed my shoulders. “Come on,” he led me away from his fans. They were staring at us, surprise in their eyes. We went back to my house and talked about his tour. “I don’t want you to leave,” I mumbled. “I don’t want to leave either, but I have to in order to keep my career going,” he frowned. “Can’t you just say no?” I suggested. “Yes, but then I’d get fired,” he chuckled. I scooted closer to him and hugged him, he hugged me back and rubbed my back soothingly. I buried my face in his chest. We had always been close, since the day I went to the after school picnic. We were going to eat and look at stars. In our classes, we were learning about planets and stars and stuff. “Remember the night we met?” I smiled and looked up. He was smiling too. He loved that memory as much as I did. “Yeah,” he sat up. “We were both looking out of the same telescope and we started talking. We loved astronomy when we were ten.” His eyes were soft as he regarded me. He leaned down and my heart stopped. Was he going to kiss me? My breathing quickened as his lips came closer. The door opened and I jumped away. My mom was there with milk and cookies, Charles’s favorite. “Hey kids,” she smiled and looked at a stunned Charles. He shook his head and sat up. “You okay?” I whispered as I touched his arm and leaned closer. He nodded and looked over at Mom. “Hi Mrs. Jackson,” he smiled politely. I pulled my knees up to my chest and waited for Mom to say something back. “Hello Charles. How was your flight over here?” she looked suspicious. “Fine,” he said a little too quickly. I patted his hand and rolled my eyes. We were going to kiss and Mom just had to interrupt. She put the food on my desk and hurried off. Charles got up and tripped over one of my many water bottles filled with vodka. He lifted the bottle and unscrewed the top. I jumped up, hoping he wouldn’t know about the drinking. He turned to me, the bottle high in the air. “You were drinking?” he put the bottle down and held my shoulders. “What’s your problem?” he shook me. “I missed you, and alcohol helped with the pain,” my tears slid down my cheeks. He hugged me to his chest, his arms shaking but strong. I sobbed into his shoulder, apologizing over and over again. He stroked my hair eagerly. My tears were slowing and he was calming down. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. “It’s okay. Just, no more drinking, okay?” he held my forearms tightly. I nodded and leaned closer to him. He shook his head and turned away from me. “I have to go,” he turned towards the door. “No,” I sobbed. He turned back to me and pulled me into his arms again. Life was taking a turn for the worst. I buried my face in his chest, more tears coming. “It’s okay, it’s okay. I won’t go,” he rubbed my back gently, then harder. “I’m really sorry,” I mumbled against his shirt. “It’s alright.” more

Resolved Question: Guitar Players Needed!?

Okay so this is my problem: At our school we are going this thing where we get paired up into groups and make a band type thing. So it's like Battle of the Bands. Our band was assigned to the song of Momma Mia. We want to win so I want to learn how to play it on guitar (I already play guitar so I know cords and stuff). So if you know how to play it or can figure it out please tell me the cords and the order and everything, or if you have a link that would be helpful too! Thank you in advance and I promise if you can do this you will get best answer and 5 stars :) more

Voting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?

I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Sorry for the really long wall of text!I know a lot of guitar chords already. Not just the like seven essenial ones but several advanced onesand power chords, what I have trouble with is single noes and barre chords. Also, recommending thins because they'll take me farther if I play it in a band doesn't really make a difference, I already both play drums and sing in a band, I wouldn't be playing any of these other instruments in a band, I'd only use them to compose the songs for the other band members. more

Resolved Question: Summer job playing guitar?

First of all, I'm 13 years old, and that is a little young to be looking into a summer job. But I'm very motivated and I want to start saving money and doing what I love- playing guitar. I came up with this idea this morning, and while it seems far-fetched, it might just work. I just want to get opinions for people, for example how much I would charge per hour and whether or not you think you would even hire me. Here's the plan: I'm pretty well known in my town for playing guitar and performing. I would do kids' birthday parties, mostly girls' I guess (because of the music I play, and the music i can sing). I can pick up songs really fast if I know the chords played in them and I've at least heard them, so I can learn the popular little girls' songs like Taylor Swift (I already know a lot of her songs), Demi Lovato, and Miley Cyrus, and anything on the top 20 songs of the month. I could have a big list of the songs I can play and the guests can request songs from that list. So, now I need your opinions. If you were the parent of a little girl, maybe aged 6-10, would you hire me (for a comparatively low price) for a "backyard" birthday party? And how do you think I could get the word out? Any suggestions would be great!! And by the way, the artists I listed before are not the artists I play most of the time- no haters, please. more

Resolved Question: PLEASE READ AND COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

This is the first chapter of my book. Does it move too fast? I looked up at my wall and let my eyes fill with angry tears. How could he just up and leave? He was a star now, but I missed him. Charles’s picture hung everywhere. I had to be his biggest fan. He was my best friend. He was just a pop star now. I wanted my best friend back. On the posters he was posing, sometimes with his shirt off and his awesome abs showing. My heart pounded hard every time I looked into the eyes of each of his posters. Man, was I in love with him. Charles was coming back though. He was staying for two weeks this summer. Maybe I could convince him to come home permanently. My tears spilt over and I sobbed into my pillow. A knock sounded at my door and I wiped my eyes. “Come in!” I called. The door opened and a familiar face popped in. It was Charles. I jumped off my bed and threw my arms around him. He hugged me to his chest. “Someone’s a big fan,” he put me down. His voice was deeper than it had been six months ago. He walked around my room, looking at each of the posters. “You have nearly every poster made of me,” he turned back to me and hugged me again. “I missed you,” I mumbled. “I missed you too,” he let go of me. He looked over at my guitar. “You started playing?” He smiled at me. I nodded and picked up the guitar. I sat on my bed and adjusted my fingers. “I first saw you under the stars, when I started school In Seymour,” I started strumming the guitar. “I don't tell you how I feel cause . . .” I smiled. “No one is there to help me send.” Charles sat next to me. His foot tapped to the beat and he smiled at my guitar. It was just like his. I changed chords a few times then started the chorus. “I think of you every single day, I think about you everyday. I like how you are a sweet, loving person, it's a pleasure to be sad around you,” this was true for me. This whole song was true, I loved him so much. He was the best friend I met in grade school outside the school at night. Charles was still tapping his foot, but now his hand slapped against his knee to the beat as well. “My life would be complete if we were together. When I started school In Seymour, I could only hope that we could be together. Naivety plaguing me,” I sung louder. Charles’s face was full of approval. Both of his feet tapped in unison, his hand tapped against his knee, and his other hand was resting on my shoulder. “I think of you every single day, I think about you everyday. I like how you are a sweet, loving person. A fight here or there but they weren’t that bad,” I strummed the guitar on my last chord and looked over at Charles again. “Wow,” he chuckled. I blushed and took out a small book from under my mattress. “These are my songs,” I handed it to him. He flipped through the book and smiled at me. “Wow, you wrote all of these while I was gone?” he got up and looked around my room again. “I didn’t notice a few minutes ago, but you changed your room since I was last here. Besides the posters I mean,” he looked at my bed. I had changed the covers from blue to red, one of my favorite colors. “Yeah, and I got a new desk, and added a couch in the corner,” I pointed to the couch. “Do you think you could teach me that song you were singing? I’d like to learn it,” he plopped down on my couch. I shrugged and nodded, looking into his hazel eyes. His brown hair was neatly cut, like it had been before he left. I was glad that there was one thing that didn’t change about him. I stared into his eyes for the longest time. I didn’t really notice when he got up and waved a hand in front of my face. I shook my head and blinked a few times, trying to clear my head. “You okay?” he sat down next to me again. “Yeah,” I took a deep breath. “Here, let me teach you some of the chords,” I adjusted my fingers on the strings again. “Not right now. Your graduation is tomorrow, right?” he leaned against my headboard. “Yeah,” I leaned my guitar against the wall and pulled my knees up to my chest. “Well, I have an early graduation gift for you,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out a little box. He handed it to me and I opened it. It was a little bracelet in it with my name on it. “Do you like it?” he slipped it onto my wrist. My name, Elizabeth, was carved into the silver. “I love it,” I gasped. He patted my hand and leaned back against the headboard again. We talked for a while, catching up on what he had been doing in Hollywood and what he was doing after he left. It pained me to know he was leaving in only two weeks. “You know, I’m going on a world tour when I leave. I’m going to Hollywood first to pack though, then I’m going to Italy, Japan, China, Russia, then tour around here,” he tucked his arms behind his head. “Really?” my heart hammered in my chest. I wasn’t going to see him for ages. He nodded. “Yep,” he got up and leaned against the wall. “I really don’t like being a pop star sometimes. All I want toHe nodded. “Yep,” he got up and leaned against the wall. “I really don’t like being a pop star sometimes. All I want to do is put on a few shows around the country, not go on a world tour,” he sunk to the ground. I changed the subject. “Did you ever get a girlfriend in Hollywood?” He looked up. His eyes were suddenly filled with tears. I jumped off my bed and knelt beside him. I hugged him and he hugged me back. “What’s wrong?” I pulled back. “I did have a girlfriend. She dumped me right before I came here. I told her I was excited to come here because I would get to see you, then she dumped me,” he wiped his eyes. “It’ll be okay,” I patted his shoulder. “Thanks,” he smiled. more

Resolved Question: Need some vocal recording advice?

I am working on trying to promote my singing, so I want to make good cd, and possible a video to post online, but I have never really worked with much audio recording myself. Can anyone offer some advice on good recording equipment/software that I can use. What type of mic i need, ect. I write songs, but I am in the process of learning how to play piano or guitar to sing along to them. So for the time being I would basically be singing other peoples songs. Another question, is there any easy to use software out there that I could make music for my songs on myself? I can read some sheet music, but I am more of a compose by sound kind of person. I will take any advice. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: What should I practice in guitar?

I have been playing guitar for about 7 months and mostly have been learning songs. My dream is to be in a METAL band someday and was wanting some advice on what to practice. I am completely lost and it feels like I am losing interst in guitar because of that. I practice up down picking periodically but I feel like I am not improving much on that. Should I keep playing songs and get into harder songs or practice other things? So any advice/help on what and or how to practice would be greatly appreciated. Maybe some exercises I can do that would greatly help being in a death metal band would be the answer? more

Resolved Question: my best friend copies everything I do, how do i tell her to stop?

So if I get a new t shirt, she will say she likes my t shirt, ask where I get it, and then the next week she will have it. I get new converse, she says, "ooh, I like them, I might get some like that". and we both have really curly hair, and I start straightening it, then she will say "ooh your hair looks lovely straight, I might do mine like that". And even with things like for example, if I start learning a new piece on guitar (she also plays guitar) then she will hear it and say "ooh thats a nice song, I might learn that". When I tell her to stop copying me, she comes out with this thing that happened a few years ago between us, I won't say what, but it is to do with copying and for some reason she has always kept a grudge. Even though the whole thing was her bad. I can't tell you how annoying it is. I don't tend to follow all the fashion trends and all that, I just dress the way I want to dress, I don't copy anyone, and (this may sound like I am jealous, but really, it is annoying) she gets all the credit for dressing differently. In other words, people think I am the one copying. How do I tell her to just stop it? she is my best friend, and I don't want to hurt her (she is very sensetive) and I don't want her to bring up this thing that happened years ago. more

Voting Question: Guitarist going to Ukulele. What I need to know?

I am a guitarist and have been for about 7 years. I play electric guitar and bought an acoustic about a year ago which I take everywhere. It is too big to carry with me, so I think I'm going to buy a Ukulele. But there are a couple things I want to know first. What kind of Ukulele should I look for? What is the normal size? How many frets does a standart Ukulele have? Why is the very top string higher than the second top string (as opposed to the guitar where as you go down the strings only get higher.)? What are some popular songs to learn on the Ukulele as a beginner? And anything else Ukulele related more

Voting Question: Where can I learn to read music sheet?

Alright, I don't know if it is exactly called like that, but I play guitar and when I open the Guitar Pro program, there appear 2 rows. On the lower row is the tabulature, which are indicated the frets, and on the first row are the notes. You know, the black points, with a tail in the upside on the portative. There are also some "#" and "b". I know they are called sharps and flats. However, how can I learn to really read them, and when I see a portative to read it fluently. All of those notes, I want to know how to read them. On some songs there are many symbols that I really don't know what they are. more

I tried playing the song over and over to get the beat... but I just can't play it. Any tips?!?! I'm a beginner on guitar, I barely know any chords... :( more

Resolved Question: Best way to learn piano?

I've been playing guitar for several years, however I'd like to learn piano along with a bit of music theory (mainly for reading sheet music). How should I go about starting? Not looking to take lessons either. I don't know enough about reading sheet music or the piano to be able to learn more complicated songs on my own (some modern stuff, but Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and other greats), so I guess I'm looking more for exercises and websites to learn from. Any ideas? more
