Learn How To Read Guitar Sheet Music Questions asked

Open Question: What Should i do and where should i go for college???? Music Carrier or Astronomy Carrier?

Im 15 years old and i live like 60 miles from Houston Texas. i don't know what ti do for or especially where to go for college. I am pretty smart in school but im not a nerd (Im like the rocker type kid with long hair, skinny clothing, band tees, and so fowarth). i usually find myself making As and Bs but since this year,(im in the 8th grade, and i was held back a grade because i used be homeschooled), ive been struggling a bit and i am making a few Cs and have made 1 F. I find that science is the easiest subject to understand and all of science easy to memorize. (id forget to study for a big test or do the test reviews and i still get high Bs and Low As). I am good at my other subjects but i find that im good in math but i am not the type who can stay focused doing a million math problems. i find maht and history very dull and reading and language arts is just boring like the others. Also, i love Rock and Metal music (Unlike these retarded snoby rednecks). I play the guitar and have been playing guitar self tought for 1 year and really dedicated. I am trying to learn music theory and all the things i need to be able to write songs, improvise, read sheet music and all that stuff. Id really like to do a music carrier but id make more money in the science carrier like astronomy or something like that. I don't know what to do because id want to do the music carrier but i know that my dad would not (in a not angry but convincing type way) approve that idea and a astronomy carrier would make more money (unless i become a famous rockstar or something). If i choose the Music carrier, where should i go to college???? Im thinking maybe Austin Texas since it's one of the biggest music citys in the world and maybe id have a bigger chance of getting a good job in Austin. But for the astronomy carrier, i did not think of this until now but maybe Universty of Houston since it's close to Johnson space station and that my dad might mostly recomend UH since he went there for college. My heart sets closer to the music carrier but that might be hard to get into and i don't know how i would get in since my dad would not be too enthused at the idea and that i've only started learning guitar and music last year. Also, for the music carrier, what kind of jobs can i get? i want to be able to play my guitar and make songs and stuff. And what kind of jobs can i get in the Astronomy carrier??? Please give me a good and detailed answer. more

Voting Question: Is a good idea to learn how to read music sheet if I have the possibility?

Look, I am 16 years old, a guitarist and I play for like a year (I really started seriously for a few months). I have a live guitar teacher. I study with him for like 2 months, this month is the 3rd. I asked him about music sheet, what is it, because I saw a portative in Guitar Pro program, and then he said "OK, I'll teach you how to read it if you want". He said many students he had were running away in fear when they heard about reading music and theory stuff. Do you think is a good idea to learn how to read it? It will help me a lot in the future? What if I decide to go to a music school? more

Resolved Question: Is playing guitar difficult? I don't underStand...?

I don't understand the basics of guitar playing. Do you just need to know chords and then strum them out for each song? Or do you have to be able to read sheet music? I'm confused. I would love to learn how to play. more

Resolved Question: Need some vocal recording advice?

I am working on trying to promote my singing, so I want to make good cd, and possible a video to post online, but I have never really worked with much audio recording myself. Can anyone offer some advice on good recording equipment/software that I can use. What type of mic i need, ect. I write songs, but I am in the process of learning how to play piano or guitar to sing along to them. So for the time being I would basically be singing other peoples songs. Another question, is there any easy to use software out there that I could make music for my songs on myself? I can read some sheet music, but I am more of a compose by sound kind of person. I will take any advice. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Where can I learn to read music sheet?

Alright, I don't know if it is exactly called like that, but I play guitar and when I open the Guitar Pro program, there appear 2 rows. On the lower row is the tabulature, which are indicated the frets, and on the first row are the notes. You know, the black points, with a tail in the upside on the portative. There are also some "#" and "b". I know they are called sharps and flats. However, how can I learn to really read them, and when I see a portative to read it fluently. All of those notes, I want to know how to read them. On some songs there are many symbols that I really don't know what they are. more

Resolved Question: How hard is it to learn piano if...?

Ok so i play guitar and bass guitar and im pretty alright at both but i can't read sheet music. how hard would piano be for me? more

Resolved Question: Best way to learn piano?

I've been playing guitar for several years, however I'd like to learn piano along with a bit of music theory (mainly for reading sheet music). How should I go about starting? Not looking to take lessons either. I don't know enough about reading sheet music or the piano to be able to learn more complicated songs on my own (some modern stuff, but Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and other greats), so I guess I'm looking more for exercises and websites to learn from. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: Piano songs, and Advice for a beginner?

I've been playing around on my sisters keyboard for about 2 months now, and I'm really starting to get into it. I've started learning a few chords and I know the notes, you know C D E F G A B and stuff. I've started to learn a few song but some I get stuck and don't finish them, I taught myself play guitar fairly well so I have learned some of the songs I know on guitar onto the piano by ear but its just very simple stuff. I am really getting frustrated with not finishing a song, I have learned parts of "Fur Elise" and "The River Flows In You" but i haven't gotten far. I practice every day (I probably work harder at learning piano than I do with my school work), maybe I'm just getting to far ahead of myself? I don't want to learn super easy songs like "twinkle twinkle little star" or "mary had a little lamb" I want something more challenging but not to hard, Do you know any songs that would be good for me to learn? Also I don't know how to read music sheets and was wondering if that is something difficult to learn on your own (I bet if I could read them it would make things easier)? Also are there any websites that can help me with that? I Thank You in advance, and apreciate any advice that might help me be a better pianist more

Voting Question: Do you have trouble learning another instrument?

So I played piano and violin for awhile. I still do the piano but I quit the violin a few years ago. I played both of these for at least ten years. I just started learning the guitar. Trying to read sheet music is mind fuking me. I keep wanting to do the violin finger patterns. For example, B on the violin would be first finger on the A string, but it is an open B string on the guitar, so I keep wanting to but my first finger down instead of playing an open string. And tips on how to make the transition from one instrument to another easier? more

Voting Question: guitar, drums, piano, flute, and bass which is the easiest to hardest? in order please.?

i want to know because i have played flute in the 3rd and 4th grade and now i'm in the 10th grade it's okay and it not so easy but not so hard either. i might not keep on practicing on it. piano is difficult but i'm learning but i'll try to become an intermidiate the most my dad said to be an expert it takes years and years to master it not just 1 or 2. sorry not for me. bass tried might improved, drums easiest to improvise but still a beginner will improved to at least an intermidiate. guitar my life long passion.begginner i must admit i decided not to practice during freshman year and yeah i regretted that but now i'm gonna practice everyday at least 2 hours or so. i'll try to become an expert on that. also if i learn guitar than bass should be easy right? i'll practice guitar, drums and piano(once my brother gives me the copy of his piano book)every single day. also if i were able to read the sheet music for piano then drums and guitar should be easy right the thing is no sites tells me where to play the guitar on the sheet music and drums well yeah got that all i need are songs so piano is technically the easiest to play for songs since i know where to play well i will soon. how long will it take to master reading sheet music and yeah i know tabs are easier but in case if the songs are in sheet music i want to be able to play so how long? also got any songs on tabs for drums, guitar and piano or sheet music even? more

Voting Question: learning to play piano songs?

I cant read music sheets and I was wondering if theirs a website that tells what notes to play in a song like (a b c d e g d b d eg) which is the beginning of Carlos Santana's Samba Pa Ti.... which i learned how to play from my guitar.... anyways Is their a that does that? also are their any good websites that can help me how to read music sheets? Resolved Question: Web Application Development: Where do I start?

Help a newbie out! :) Let me start off by saying that I have ZERO background in programming. I understand markup langauges (HTML, XHTML, CSS) and I know a bit of JavaScript. I know the directly I would like to take is to learn and utilize .Net technologies for web application development. My question is... where do I start? While I know schooling is the most formal route to take (and I do intend on eventually completing a MS in Computer Science) I will have to stick with individual learning / workshops or individual classes for the time due to financial restraints. I don't want to learn just the languages. I know that if I learn only the languages, I won't fully understand the development aspect. Sure, I'll know what elements, functions and variables are and how to manipulate them effectively (I guess), but I won't know the theory of programming. I liken it to music somewhat. I can learn to play the guitar and piano well, but just because I can read sheet music and translate it into music does not mean that I understand music theory or know how to write decent songs from scratch. SO... MY QUESTION IS: What are some great resources available for those of us teaching ourselves programming techniques/languages and not attending formal schooling? Is there a MUST HAVE book on programming algorithms that would provide decent insight and get me started on the right track? Any other advice from experienced programmers that would be useful? :) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!Excuse any spelling errors. I am an idiot and did not proofread prior to posting. more

Resolved Question: Where can I find free online sheet music with the notes on it?

I'm learning how to play acoustic guitar and I can sortof read tab and notes. Problem is I can only read the letters and not the stick things. I know where the notes are on the guitar but I cant find any music which has the notes attatched. Even if its piano music I can alter it, but I can't find it. Thanks more

Resolved Question: Can a self-taught guitarist still be as good as someone who took lessons?

I don't think my parents would be willing to pay for guitar lessons for me right now, but i'm fine with teaching myself for the time being. I was just wondering if self taught guitarists ever end up being just as good as a guitarist who took lessons? Like if they are determined enough and teach themselves the same stuff thats covered in lessons, or is being self taught just a disadvantage for most ? I would say im musically inclined and i've really wanted to play guitar for years so im pretty sure i would be practicing for ages and i wouldnt give up easily. I also did keyboard lessons at my school for a couple of years a few years ago, they werent very good, but i did learn how to read a bit of sheet music from it if that helps. I'm 14 btw.. Thanks in advance more

Voting Question: Should i learn to play piano? Is reading sheet music hard/necessary?

My dad is a pro and says I can have one of his old keyboards. im not planning on taking lessons, just self teaching since my dad doesnt really have time and i more indapendant when working. i looove piano music and i can play a few simple songs from trial and error on the piano but i cant really read and follow sheet music well. i know the basics: notes, rests, which note is which, ect. but i cant follow them very well! when i try to i get frustrated since it makes my playing really slow and bad :/ i cant play very well with both hands, i get confused easily. im in middle school, 13, and dont really know how to play any other instruments except simple violin, guitar, and recorder. i really have nothing to do xD and i seriously love piano. i heard practicing is dreadful lol more

Resolved Question: Chords for Itsumo Nando Demo from Spirited Away?

I have the piano music all written out. I found a tab sheet for guitar, and I will probably quickly learn how to read tabs (I'm very new to guitar), but I want a chord sheet. Chords like, say, Dm, F, G, A#, etc, not tabs, not sheet music with written notes. Does anybody know where to find some for Itsumo Nando Demo (the ending for Spirited Away)? (Don't just give me the name of a site with chord sheets, please, it's not helpful.) It would be great if the chord sheet also had the lyrics (most that I use have the lyrics with the chord notes above the words, that's my favorite type, but it's not required). Thanks! more

Voting Question: Memorizing guitar chords and theory?

ive been playing guitar for 4 years now, but probably differently than most others. when i began, a friend simply taught me how to read music (just tablature, not that fancy stuff), basic structure of the guitar, and that was it. everything else ive learned and built upon that. and now im realizing that by not learning chords at all or how to read theory, my playing is rather limited. is there any easy way to start memorizing chords and to read sheet music? and to play chords well, cause i suck at that too haha more

Resolved Question: Learning Acoustic Guitar?

I might be getting an acoustic guitar for my birthday and I'm wondering how difficult/ how long it would be for me to learn simple sounding songs? For example "Day Dreamer" by Adele or the slower Taylor Swift songs like "Teardrops on my guitar." I know a lot is determined by how long you practice but if I'm able to put in about 20-30 minutes during the week when I have school work or a lot more time (maybe 1+ hours) when I don't have school, how long would it take me to learn? I used to play clarinet in marching band so I can read sheet music. And I have NEVER EVER played guitar before. more

Resolved Question: How do you learn new Guitar songs? online?

I've been playing guitar for..hm...7 months now. I know plenty of chords, can strum and tune my guitar. Can slide and you know. But the thing is I CAN'T LEARN SONGS. And I don't know why! You see, when you get a tab, then you're playing NOTES. But like all average songs, that you use chords ans strumming and stuff, i don't know HOW to KNOW how to play them. On ultimate-guitar.com, I get guitar chord sheets for different songs, and I know how to play the chords, but u see, writing can't expain stum patterns and tricks and things... How about sheet music? In sheet music, is there chords and tricks like written like notes and stuff. I wouldn't know cause I can't read sheet music, and Guitar For Dummies says that's completely OK. But they'll tell you anything since you're a dummies right? So how about all you guitar players, how do you learn new guitar songs? Do you learn online? If you do, how do you? If you don't, how do you? Thanks, DreamerI've tried youtube, but they seem to never give me everything i need! =(I already have Guitar Pro, but like i was saying, notes are easy to learn but what i need is chords and strumming things. Guitar Pro helps me with learning songs like.... Right here waitingGood ideas, but i'm talking about chords, not notes. THANKS <3 more

Resolved Question: I need help playing this on the piano...?

The song bitter heart by zee avi. Now look, I'm not great at piano. It takes me a bit to figure out all the notes because I can't read music. But I eventually figure out and have a great memory once I learn. I just need help getting started. So if you can learn by ear or happen to know exactly how to play it could you please help me out and send me the sheet music or whatever. I'd really really appreciate it because I haven't been able to find it. I only found tabs for guitar.By the way, I'm asking because I want to play it at a party. more

Voting Question: I have a question about sheet music and bass guitar. Can you answer?

Im getting a bass guitar in a few days for my b-day and ive been waiting a year! Well I just had a question about sheet music, its been awhile since ive been in music class but I remember the basics of reading music. To me its easier to play instruments using notes, then tabs i find tabs difficult. So if you buy a guitar song book does it have the bass notes in it too? Id assume it'd be by the bass clef lol. So if a song book doesnt have bass clef it isnt for bass guitar? Do you have to buy altogether seperate song books just for bass then regular guitar? My dad plays guitar and he has several song books i wanna learn from but most dont have a bass clef. How can you be sure when buying a book online, that it has bass notes in it? more

Resolved Question: Tips on playing the electric guitar.?

Okay, so for Christmas I got an electric guitar and I don't have the slightest idea how to play it. So I wanna know in what order should I learn everything examples: 1. reading sheet music 2. cords ect. The guitar came with a video on how to play but it is hard to keep up with. Resolved Question: Is the standard sheet music for guitar written in tab?

Because I already know how to play the flute, and I know how to read music (for the treble clef). I am learning the guitar and although I am just learning the chords for now, I would soon like to know how to play melodies. Do I have to learn tab, a completely different method than I am used to, or does the sheet music written in the treble clef work just as well? more

Resolved Question: Should I learn classical guitar?

I first picked up guitar about nine years ago. But even though I've been at it for years, I've been stuck at a beginner's level. I can read chord charts and tablature. I know commonly used chords/fingerings. I can figure out the chords to a lot of songs by ear if I sat down with a recording, pausing for each chord as I look for its match on the fretboard. But all I can do so far is just simple chord strumming. I don't know how to read music and I haven't really even gotten the names of the notes on the fretboard memorized (except for the fifth and sixth strings, because that's usually where the bass notes of chords are located, right?) I play songs mostly from the alternative rock genre (partly because I like the genre, and partly because there are a lot of songs from the genre that are easy enough for me to play). And sometimes, I like to try writing my own songs. Which is why I would like to learn how to play lead and improvise - so I could embellish my own songs and come up with more interesting sounds. I think I could use some music theory too. Without music theory or even knowing the notes on the fretboard, one could still come up with musical ideas, but to me, doing it that way feels like groping around in the dark. Also, I was thinking that if I knew some music theory, it would be a lot easier for me to figure out how to play other people's songs by ear. Of course, I could just look for tablature and play by numbers, but I want to understand what I'm doing... not just mindlessly hit these notes without knowing what they are and why..... So recently, I decided to sign up for lessons with a teacher. (I think one of the reasons my progress has been so slow is that I have been playing and learning mostly by myself. I was thinking I could learn more, faster, with the guidance of someone who knows what he's doing.) When we first met, my teacher asked me what exactly I wanted him to teach me. But I wasn't really sure how to put it in words. There are so many things I want to learn, and I probably don't even know what some of them techniques are called. :) He also mentioned that he didn't want to teach me by reading off sheet music, because, he said, it just might make me dizzy. Part of me agrees with my teacher. The thought of learning to read music, how it relates to the guitar, and playing the music as I read it just scares me. It seems so complicated. Also, if he does teach me to read music, he's going to be giving me classical lessons. Now, I LOVE listening to classical music. It's beautiful! It's just that I never really imagined myself playing it, because, well, it looks so difficult! :) However, there's also a part of me that thinks maybe it would be good for me. It'll motivate me to learn the notes on the fretboard, I'll learn proper fingering positions... and I'm not sure, but I have a feeling that I'll need to know how to read music if I want to learn some music theory - is that right? So now, I'm not so sure what I should do. Should I go ahead and learn classical guitar? Or should I just ask my teacher to teach me rock/blues songs and scales and solos, etc, by "shape" instead? Because I really want to understand what I'm doing... and I'm up for learning new and challenging things. But then again, I'm not sure if my brain can handle it (I'm already 27 years old)... or if it would really help me with my goals (songwriting, improvisation). I mean, it's probably not very realistic of me to aim for really becoming a classical guitarist, when I'm starting out this late in life. But I'm willing to learn what it has to offer, so hopefully I could apply it to other genres and perhaps even my own music. Yet, I'm also afraid that like my teacher said, it would just make me dizzy.. What do you think? :) By the way, I already decided to give the classical lessons a try. Last week was our first classical lesson. We haven't gotten to the part with note reading yet - just p-i-m-a exercises and tablature. It takes me forever to get it right there and then, on-the-spot, and we haven't even gotten to the good stuff yet! hahaha! :) Not to mention that these hourly lessons don't come very cheap. :) (we went over a Study in E Minor, "Andantino in C" and "Romanza") So now, I'm wondering if I could ask my teacher if he could give me the classical lessons more as homework/supplementary material, and just use more of our session time on rock/blues techniques..? I don't know. Would that be a better idea? Thanks... :)haha, yeah Matt B... I tend to write too long... haha... :) I'll try to write shorter next time. :)) Thanks. more

Resolved Question: What Should My Guitar Plan Be?

I want to start learning acoustic guitar. I am a total beginner but I played alto saxaphone for 5 years so I know how to read sheet music. I found that some people say you can learn online from sites like www.guitartricks.com and books like the hal leonard guitar method series. I was wondering if these plans would work also: 1) The self taught plan mentioned above. No lessons ever 2) I take lessons to learn the basics and then I quit lessons and learn styles on my own 3) I learn the basics on my own and then take lessons to perfect my skills and learn a style Can I please have which one you suggest and a reason? Resolved Question: Why do I have such a problem reading music?

-I took piano lessons when I was younger, but quit because I couldn't read sheet music well. -I taught myself to play guitar, using tabs and figuring songs out by ear. -I taught myself how to play songs on piano by marking all the notes on the music and memorizing it as I go. -I've been in many choruses, including district festivals and ones you have to audition for, and in musicals. -I took a college music theory course. -I'm taking a guitar course. -I write songs and fool around with Finale often. Even after years of all this and struggling with it, I cannot look at music, see the note and have it mean anything. I'm not a visual learner at all. Charts and graphs mean nothing to me. I try to practice every day, but it gets so frustrating, I have to use the f-a-c-e or every-good-boy-deserves-fudge tricks for every single note! It's so inefficient. Will I ever learn to read sheet music or is my brain just not wired for that kind of thing? more

Resolved Question: What do I need to do to prepare for a major in music?

I'm 13, and I've been playing guitar for 5 1/2 years, but I am absolutely certain that I want to be a musician later on in my life. I play heavy metal, so I'm afraid I won't get accepted to most colleges because of my style. I have several questions though, What do I need to learn or work on to prepare for the audition and college. I know all of my modes, and how to use them to solo over a song in a certain key. I am also getting increasingly better at improvising. I can read music, sheet music and TABs. What song should I play for them? I also live in Georgia, so which music college should I go to? The best I have seen is Georgia State and the Art institute of Atlanta. I just have so many questions on what I need to prepare for this. more

Resolved Question: How does one become fluent at reading sheet music on guitar?

Tabs are such a crutch for the casual player, they're so easy, but I want to learn theory so i can jam better and write music for other instruments that I can't play. I am not taking a class, I'm also pretty poor. Do you have to be able to recognize what note every fret and string is instantly? I've started by going back to absolute beginner (first time playing guitar) songs while looking at the sheet music rather than tabs (also using this to practice finger picking) . Any other ideas? more

I'm thinking of learning guitar in the future. I'm also ambidextrous - but only to an extend; I can do somethings left handed and others right handed, but if I've never done something before and I'm learning to do it, I can start off with either hand. I realise that most guitar sheet music and guitars are right-handed, but having a stronger and more flexible right hand, would I be able to play more complex melodies/leads/etc. if I played left-handedly (With my right hand on the shaft/whatever you call it :P) Also, just a side note, I can read piano sheet music and music written down as a matrix (as it's normally shown in DAWs), so how easy would it be to read music from Piano sheet music or a Matrix edit and play it on guitar.ispndi: °write, and what relation does writing have to playing guitar? I do some things left-handedly and other thing right-handedly.carl: I got to try it last time I was at my cousins' and both hands felt around the same. more
