Learn Notes On Guitar Questions asked

Open Question: Poll: Have you heard the song "Stairway to Heaven"? And the solo?

Learned it note for note, and HAVE had it in my back pocket since the summer of 1977 when my cousin originally laid it out for me in like a 3 part process; and it worked really good I think...I don't normally give guitar lessons; however, in '97, someone that caught us while making a living on the road,,approached me and asked IF, I would be interested in teaching him...22year old dude from Chicago,,,name J.T..(We are still friends to this day),, but anyway,,, I didn't think he was ready really and I was actually right; but when I got home to south lake tahoe, Ca where AM not living at this particular time; but usually DO, as it is my home, and have lived there just up from the clubs @ the Nevada/California state line...So,, after a couple of weeks,,I get a call from J.T..who thought he'd move on out to Tahoe.. Big change for him being from the south part of chicago...but he had a love of the blues..and my cousin who IS a blues man..(Lonnie Mack)..Lonnie did make a regular stop at "Legends"..(Buddy's joint), and JT saw us there,,,although, he just happend upon me, at a booth, foolin' with someone's accoustic,,,and trying to get it to take a tuning,,and stay... So, I was using "Stairway to heaven" as a "control"...and he heard me..and I CAN imitate J. Page's version And one of my own,,and have actually been doing it since high school in the mid '70's when I'd play the whole tune,,,about 12 or 13 minutes long when laid down properly,,,and sang with the right "Feel",,etc...I have actually officially taught that song to about 5 people in the last 30+ years,,,and the last one WAS J.T,,,and he paid me a total of $750.00, but I had to give him a whole new way of aproaching the instrumant,,,And "Undo" some really bad habits that he'd picked up somewhere;;So, we spent a good 3 weeks 'De-Programming" his incorrect aproach to the guitar in general,,,as it prevented him from being able to "Move on" alone..and teach himself stuff, and he couldn't grasp what changes, and how subtle, and chilly the whole mellow thing was, when it came to getting his abiltiy to play with a, or as part of, maybe is what I meant to say.. of a Unit...or team,,,and if enough "Nare-Do-Wells" showed up in the same place, then maybe even a quick "Thow-it-together band"...and I even layed out the basics or the basic Nashville picker's # system that they,,them..and I'm not ashamed to say I myself have better success with that old number way of dealing with other players..it's just a better way... You know what i'm talking about,,??? Like if we didn't know each other; but we could still just walk on each other's bandstand and earn a night's work because of the # system...?? Like,,I turn to you and simply say: this song's an Old Merle Haggard thing called "Footlights",,,(for the "Chance that you Might already know of the song..what it sounds like, or anything at all that could help...),,,so,,let's say you say "I'm not a walking, fossil steve,,and I have never heard of your ancient monk's chant......So,, we're lucky 'cause even though I don't actually read music near well enough to be of any practical use when entertaining for paychecks and percs....BUT..I can look at you and even if it's noisy and wildly busy in the club...we will be fine, even without ever having practiced together at any time in the past..I'll say,,,"Merle's Footlights"..in "D",,, go 1, 4, 5, with a 7th,,,get "Out of the way" for a lead break that my Telecaster Master over there's going to ease into from HIS que, that's coming from Bob,,"Grizzly" Smith,,,my Pedal Steel Guitar genious...(Watch out though; as this only applies with Bob, during actual sets throughout the night, and the genious thing will go away later,,,and the opposite effect replaces the other...Anyway,,,after the Guitar's lead break,,there's one verse, and one more run at the chorus..however?? just as Steve wraps his solo,,we're going to modulate on full step...alright with that so far??? Remember,,we started in "D"..right?? So,,You must also either be a, or become a,,singer of harmony parts,,as I'm not going to take bread out of our pockets just because one of us can't sing harmony...You'll find that to be the case in virtually every situation, where there's a club owner, and pickers, that do it as thier sole form of making a living.. So,,back to the quick rundown for the opening number of the nights 3rd set.. after the lead break, there's a full step modulation, You sing 5th part with me on the very last 2 lines of the song...And just follow, and watch my eyes,,,and within' a week or so we'll sound like we've been playing with one another for many years... Right on/??? Anyway...that's pretty much what J.T got for the "Really just sybolic" 500 bones..(I always get something out of teaching a pretty much of complete beginner what I've been toiling with since the summer of '68, when I was 7 years old,,and got my 1st electric guitar at the "Flea Market" in San Jose', CA,,, for 20 bucks,,,An old "Kay",,and an old SearsSilvertone amp..1/12,,and almost no controls, of any kind... So,,I've got "some" experience under my belt that does tend to make things easier not for me only,, but everbody leans on me from time to time, and It 'doesn't bother me man.. Who do I think I am anyway??? You know what I'm sayin'.. we're all in it to sound FANTASTIC, and for the drunks, and customers,,,to drink more,,and more,, that's what we're technically there for...it helps to remember that..And if your thinking "Oh **** that,,I don't want to deal witht that ****...here's the thing that real music player's must face sooner or later..and that's "Do you want to do this for your weekly bread,,,pay your bills, and send the kids to school, etc..??? Or,, do you want to work at K-Mart,,and meet us on Friday & Saturday ONLY??? Well,, then sorry dude; gotta let you go on your way..because we've chosen to do this for more money than Sears can pay us for selling new tires,,or working at some "Jive-Turkey" music store,,pedaling stripedaling strings and giving away picks to Johnny the Trombone student that hangs out at the store, pounding on one of the Drum Kits until we all want to choke the little turd,,and his trombone... I choose to show up for 4, maybe 5 sets a night,,,4,,maybe 5 nights a week.. Scale's usually around $500.00 a week these days; although I make Much Much, more when we hit the road,,,,that's a whole nuther trip,,,Are you through with this email now??? Steve with the Stairway to Heaven Licks, & tricks... elcamaro72@hotmail.com Bear in mind man; I wasn't able to read your whole email...and took you to be pretty much a novice learner young player..No offense...I came back and used the "Edit" thing on here to help me explain why this letter is so ,well,,the way it is...I was worried that you wouldn't follow my "Jive talkin',,which I tend to do..(I still call pickers "Cats" sometimes... I know I am a dinosaur, and that I'm one for the road... but,,that's show biz,,,Right?? One thing..zzzwhy I"mOne thing..zzzwhy I"m back here...I have been laying that Stairway lick..well, all the licks,,of all the different parts of the song as it winds it's way all the way to "And she's buying a Stairway.......to...hea.....vennnnnn/// ziiiiiiiiiipzaaaaaaaaaaptidahdahdaydadad… whatever..I'm kind of "Bozo'd" tonight man... but; my 1st reaction when I read your whole email was "NO, NO,,it's NOT that hard man,,, however..even in your email,,you remind me that '1977 was a little over 30 years ago,,,,and once the "Cat was out of the bag"...that I knew that particular tune, the WAY I did,, well, you can imagine what happens next... before you know it the same clown is standing on a cocktail table howling "FREEBIRD" over and over; and I usually give in to that request as well. As it took Almost as long to learn the proper way to deliver that beautiful song without wrecking it... "Less is more" if you can dig what I'm shoveling on that line of thought..?? It's always been about the quality for me..and my family..of which almost all play for thier bread. And have as long as my memory's started forming...so,,,"FreeBird" was a "Must Learn" for me back then too.. BUT,,I have some how lost my "Feel",,and I can't get a decent "Freebird" out of the old wooden box without a month or so to "Woodshed" ...all of them for that matter... I'm zipped man... email me IF perhaps you want to discuss any other musical interests's ,,as I have a few of my own lately and not a soul that has the foggiest idea what I'm "Lippin'" about.. Later man! Halsey... more

Resolved Question: Piano by ear please help?

Okay i always get told you need to no the key of a song to be able to play it by ear I figured out the key of a certain song i wanted to learn was in the key of G major so does this mean i have to find the melody from the notes in the key of G major for example G, A, B, C, D, E, F♯, G , also will the bass notes be in the same key, also will the chords be in the key of G, Also i wanted to know, i already no all my basic chords and some advanced chords but say i wanted to just play a part with chords only, how can i make it sound better because when playing chords on my guitar you can strum up and down altering the sound but on a piano it just repeats. more

Open Question: I need some electric guitar playing tips from expert players, please help me?

Ok, im not a beginnier or a newbie, but im about intermediate. I play thrash metal, speed metal or just basic heavy metal riffs. Ive been playing guitar for about a year now. Acoustic guitar since march 09, but electric only for about 7-8 weeks. And im pretty good, just i need some tips to perfect my playing. My main problem is too much pick up sound, its not that its to sensitive, i dont think, its just ive been noticing, when my finger leaves a fret, i get the open string sound, so if im playing a fast and complex song, it sometimes sounds like a load of noise because when im trying to play the tabs for the songs, theres other noise coming from the pick ups. I know theres a technique that can help me solve this. Im practicing 1-2 hours a day. Minimum i play a day is 30 mins. Please dont tell me to learn palm muting, ive learn that, thats a pretty simple skill although it maybe similar to the technique i need to learn to stop the sound coming from the string. imagine this. Im playing a song, and when i play a note, it normally sounds fine, but when im playing a song, and one of the frets i use is on a higher string, when i play the note, and my finger comes of the string, it makes a noise as if i was performing a pull-off. How do i stop this? Its not that much of a problem if im playing quite a few notes on the same string, but on some of the songs i play, if i play a fret on a higher string, and go back down to the lower stings, i obviously take my finger off the fret on the higher sting, but it makes a pull off noise. Im sorry, im rambling and your probably like... wah, um ok. But im sure the experts will be able to give me some advice. thanks for reading. more

Resolved Question: How to play a fretless bas guitar?

I'm not planning on learning this, I can play a little bass but I think it would be a waste learning how to do it without frets. I'm simply curious, how do people know what note they're hitting if they can't see the divisions? What's the point of playing without frets anyway? I didn't even know that fretless basses existed until I read about a jazz-fusion bass player on wikipedia who didn't use frets. more

Voting Question: Bass guitar notes, note names, and where they are on the fret?

Alo, I play the bass in my school band. Up until now, I've always just played the notes right off the sheet music, and thats great. BUT!!! recently, we're getting lots of music with flats and sharps. and not like flat signs and sharp signs on each individual note. i mean like before the time its gonna be in, it shows which notes are going to be flat and things. So....the problem is....I dont know the names of the notes i play. i mean if i see a B flat(it took me a while to figure out that it was called b flat too)i know where it is on the fretboard, but when other notes i dont know all of a sudden is supposed to be played as a flat, i get so confused, because i dont know where the natural note is on the fret. i know most of the lower notes, but the high notes i cant learn...ugh...anyone know where i can find a diagram that shows the note as it is like on a sheet music, the name, and where it is on the fretboard?by the way, i know the fact that sharp is one down and flats one above. i need to know where the natural notes are so i know where the sharps and flats are more

Voting Question: I need your opinion on this!?

Ok, I'm 13 years old. I want to go to Juilliard more than anything else when I grow up. I'd give up everything to go there. It's my absolute dream. I play guitar, I write fingerstyle music for it. Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1GZC0GQKOA Also like Kaki King. I just recently started to play the piano, and within about an hour I could play small parts of Bach's Partita No.3 in E minor. I use my piano to figure out notes on a guitar, and compose music. After a short 3 hours on the violin, I knew the notes to Bach's Partita No.3 in E minor..but playing it with the bow, lol, it sounded terrible, but the thing is, is that I knew the notes to it within such a short period of time of my very first time playing a violin. The people at Sam Ash music store in Countryside said that I have a natural talent for stringed instruments, because when I picked up the Viola for the first time, they said it sounded so clean and nice. I wrote my own string triplet. I'm learning how to write scores, because I want to go to Juilliard when I grow up. What would you classify all this? Musical Prodigy? I don't know..what do you think about all of it? Honestly! Thank you so much :) more

Resolved Question: how can i learn guitar tabs to unknown/indie artists?

I have always loved to sing. I have taken guitar lessons for about 5 years but hit a dead end because i just wasn't recieveing what i craved for in music anymore. i have been trying to cover a bunch of my favorite artist to gain inspiration but, being indie bands, their music is not tracable via internet or music books. i am becoming increasingly frustrated that i can't figure out what notes they are playing on the guitar. does anyone have suggestions for how i can learn the tabs?? i have tried by ear and can figure out simple chords and strumming patterns but have trouble with fingerpicking patterns. any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! thanks so much!! :) more

Voting Question: Why choose virtual instead of actual?

I'm totally out of the loop about the whole "Rock Band" phenomenon, that is, these gaming systems like Wii, etc., where you can buy a plastic guitar thingy with buttons on it, put in your Rock Band or whatever software, and push the right buttons on your faux guitar. I was watching YouTube and saw this teen who was some kind of Rock Band "virtuoso" apparently. His fingers were hitting all those buttons on the "neck" of the guitar, and it was very impressive. My question is: If people are so into music and have the digital (as in "finger") dexterity to become pros at these games, why the heck don't they just buy a REAL guitar (about the same price as a whole Rock Band setup, I imagine) and just learn to play it? If your fingers can fly around on that plastic guitar neck, pushing the right buttons, and you have good enough hand/eye coordination to follow all those little colored "notes" on the video console screen, it's not really a HUGE jump to being able to teach your hand to "fly around" on a REAL electric or acoustic guitar fretboard, and not only that, if your eyes can follow all those little colored dots on the video game screen like that, you could PROBABLY even learn to READ MUSIC, which is something I'm not good at because I can't scan real musical notation that well. So, once again: If you're going to invest all those endless hours learning to be a "Rock Band legend", why not master the actual instrument. You never know, you could be the next Eric Clapton,........So why choose the "virtual" when you might as well be choosing the "real" in this particular case/???"Though a good question, I detest your ignorance for the hard work that must go into music." Oh, I forgot to mention" I play the piano, guitar, harmonica, recorder, drums..... You know what they say about ASSumptions...maybe you make too many, my friend. Yeah, you have one thing over me...I never played a "virtual" instrument, but have played "real" instruments for years. Sounds to me like you just started playing real ones. You probably played the video game versions for longer than the real ones. Maybe that's why you forgot how hard it was to "master" Rock Band, or whatever virtual one you played. By the same token, when you just start with anything, like a real instrument like guitar or bass, obviously it's going to seem much more "difficult" at first than when you get better at it. Oh, a "tip" for you, 'bro: Don't get too overwhelmed by all those notes on a real fretboard. If you play a serious of notes starting at the first fret, let's say, and then move the exact same notes(cont.) up one fret, you're already playing in a different key? Did you know that? The guitar fretboard has repeating patterns. It's not as tricky as you think, if you understand the logic behind the way it's laid out. Contrast that with a piano, in which you have to know the flats, sharps, whole and half notes, etc. in every scale, because you can't just "move the whole note pattern up a fret" as with the guitar, bass, etc. BTW, your post sounds suspiciously like the other one I received by "jason..." because I entered the posting in 2 different catergories. He was as disrespectful as you are with your last sentence, although he placed his disrespectful comment at the top of his answer. Are you the same guy, with 2 different accounts. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I would have given you the "best answer" rating for this question, but you blew it with your rudeness, pal. Learn some manners, eh????Sorry Kay, didn't know you were a woman. For that I sincerely apologize. Incidentally, I got the following comment at the end of "longaway" 's answer to this same question (I posted it in 2 categories, because I wanted it to be read by both musicians and those who play games like Rock Band (and/or those who do both, since you and some others seem to fall into that category). Here's "longaway"s comment: "Would you ask someone playing Call of Duty why they don't just enlist in the Army if they want to experience combat?" You lose points for originality Kay (*joke*) since obviously you're reiterating his argument. If you want my answer to your question, therefore, read the answer I gave him. Apart from that, I think you ought to know that at least ONE respondent to my question told me that playing the drums on Rock Band actually helped him play the real drums better. So, despite what you and others who have answered my question have implied, some people believe there IS a carry-over effect from virtual musicianship to "actual' musicianship. I also know this because I have read there are "transitional" softwares out there for people who are "virtual musicians" a la "Rock Band" etc. and who want to play an "actual" instrument. If there was absolutely NO carry-over, they wouldn't bother inventing such "transitional" software, now would they? The word "transition" implies there is already SOME basis for going on to play a real instrument if you're already exposed yourself to the "Rock Band" experience. I have to tell you Kay, I NEVER this to be a "hot button" question, but apparently it is. I got some people who were reasonable in their answers for all but maybe one or two lines, then they just got all hissy on me and starting launching what amounted to ad hominem attacks on me for daring to ask such a question. Weird.Well, Kay, I accept your apology if you accept mine. I'm wondering if some people got the impression that my question was intended to be "provocative" since I somehow managed to push a few buttons out there. It really WAS just interested why more people didn't try to put the work into learning a real instrument (although some have) if they were spending so much time learning virtual instruments. Maybe some people perceived an unintended "judgmentalism" in my question. It was not intended and I apologize if it came off that way. I mean, it's not like I never played a video game in my life. I didn't THINK I was being a musical "snob" but maybe I was in the eyes of some people. Hey, if people would rather play virtual music than the real thing, I would be the first to defend their right to do so. I'm totally down with freedom of speech, freedom of choice, and all that. And no, I never played Call of Duty in case you were wondering. I never fought in a war, but did grow up in NYC.(cont.) I've seen enough violence and (wo)man's inhumanity to (wo)man. Enough for a lifetime (I lived there for over 3 decades. So I really don't need to play violent video games. Like I said to "longaway", I would never suggest somebody go fight in a (senseless) war just because they enjoy playing COD in the comfort of their dens and living rooms. Like I told "longaway", if the draft was ever reinstated, like in Vietnam, I would do everything possible to make sure my son did not go if his number was picked. I'd spend my life savings protecting him from the hell that is war. But hey, if you and other kids out there get your jollies from virtual violence, I perfectly understand. Gets kind of boring in the "burbs, and/or out in the hinterlands, right? I know. I live in a safe, boring town in New England now, where soccer mom's drive huge SUVs with yellow ribbon stickers on the back window. Where I live, the cops will detain you if somebody said you looked at them cross-eyed. more

I have about six guitars (including the 3/4 size Oscar Schmidt I bought for my son) and the most expensive one, the Martin backpacker, for which I paid I think $150 new, also happens to be the worst. All my other "cheap" guitars play as well as those costing a lot more, because I didn't go for (other than the Martin) "big name' brands and I did a lot of research before I bought them. So, I don't "buy" your argument that those who are into video games such as Rock Band are spending less money, necessarily, that is. As far as all your reasons why the virtual type of music making is preferable over the real thing, well, I read your list and disagreed with a lot of them. BTW, you can't play "real" instruments with your friends? How do you think many rock bands got started?"Would you ask someone playing Call of Duty why they don't just enlist in the Army if they want to experience combat?" Bad analogy... I'm totally against war. I wouldn't ask anybody to go off to another country and kill babies and children. Resolved Question: How do you learn songs by ear on the guitar?

I just can't do it. I listen to what it is I want to play over and over again and when I go to play it, I have no idea where to play those notes. The same goes for improvising, my guitar teacher said that when you improvise you have to listen in your head to what you want to play next then play it. I know exactly what i want to play but I have no idea where to play and what frets to hit. more

Voting Question: Why are guitar notes named the way they are?

so im trying to learn the basics about the guitar and im looking at a layout of the fret board and the notes across the whole guitar, but i dont understand why they are named the way they are, there seems to be a pattern when it comes to the note on the string (example the 6th string goes f g a b c d e f with the flats/sharps in between) but why does it start with f and why does the 5th string start with A#/Bb, I cant seem to see a pattern when it comes to the 6th to 5th, 5th to 4th etc.. it seems either you can memorize the entire chart or be able to hear the note and know what it is, is there a mathematical equation to it all? or a place were someone other than your stereotypical aspiring artist explains it? more

Resolved Question: what is the name to this famous spanish guitar song?

I have heard it so many times and I want to try and learn it. It is quite fast and there are a lot of open b notes in the first section. It was originally written for the piano i think and it was based on an earthquake. It is also very fast too. Also if you could suggest other songs worth learning too. thanks more

Resolved Question: Should I play the Viola or the Piano?

Ok, my dream is to get into Juilliard when I grow up. I'm 13 years old, turning 14 in a month..I play the guitar (fingerstyle) and I'm REALLY good at it, I compose sheet music for the guitar. I use my keyboard to identify the notes, and I write them down. It looks really cool, but difficult looking sheet music. I love listening to the violin. It, along with the cello and viola remind me of the 18th Century. I really am fascinated with the 18th Century, and the sound of the violin or the cello, viola really pleases me. I also LOVE the piano, I love listening to it. Beethoven, Handel, Bach, I love the piano. I can play small parts of pieces by bach, beethoven, on the piano. I've only been playing for about a month. This really impresses people, and the piano is my favorite instrument to play, I love it. It makes me happy. As for the viola, the guy at the Sam Ash music store in Countryside claimed that I have a natural talent for String instruments. That I have a gift. and as said before, I love string instruments, it really reminds me of the 18th Century, I love the sound of it, and I'd really like to learn how to play the viola. I also heard, that theres a much better chance of getting into Juilliard if I learn the viola, since they do not have many viola players. I can't decide! The keyboard that I want to get 88 keys is $1,000+, and the viola I want with the book and new strings comes to a total of $271. What instrument do you think I should play? more

Voting Question: What is the best way to learn guitar scales?

I learned the E pentatonic minor scale, but I have trouble soloing in other keys and moving the pattern up and down the fretboard. Is it worth learning the major scale and how to form scales with music theory? Do you guitar players learn scales based on notes or patterns? And does anyone have any advice on how I can better teach myself to solo in different keys? (It's kind of lame to keep asking people to play rhythm parts in E all the time) more

Voting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?

I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Sorry for the really long wall of text!I know a lot of guitar chords already. Not just the like seven essenial ones but several advanced onesand power chords, what I have trouble with is single noes and barre chords. Also, recommending thins because they'll take me farther if I play it in a band doesn't really make a difference, I already both play drums and sing in a band, I wouldn't be playing any of these other instruments in a band, I'd only use them to compose the songs for the other band members. more

Voting Question: Where can I learn to read music sheet?

Alright, I don't know if it is exactly called like that, but I play guitar and when I open the Guitar Pro program, there appear 2 rows. On the lower row is the tabulature, which are indicated the frets, and on the first row are the notes. You know, the black points, with a tail in the upside on the portative. There are also some "#" and "b". I know they are called sharps and flats. However, how can I learn to really read them, and when I see a portative to read it fluently. All of those notes, I want to know how to read them. On some songs there are many symbols that I really don't know what they are. more

Voting Question: How long would it take me to learn bass guitar well enough to play in a band?

I absolutely love music, so I decided to pick up bass and eventually play in a band with my friend who has been playing guitar for 6 years. I know the length it takes to learn bass also depends on some factors so here is a list: -Ive been a percussionist for 5 years -I'm 15 years old -I can read rhythm and notes fairly well -I plan on getting private lessons -I've been told from my teachers that I'm a fast learner -I practice for 3 hours a day -My friend also is giving me tips as well I'm very dedicated, I got my bass a week ago and I've taught myself seven nation army(white stripes), the national anthem(radiohead) money(pink floyd), blisters in the sun(violent femmes) and I'm currently working on learning come together and i saw her standing there(The beatles) more

Resolved Question: How do I become A great Guitarist?

I know this is too general of a question, but I have always wanted to get really good and be able to play complicated pieces. I have been playing for a few years, but I have only taken classes on and off, plus I really don't know the notes by heart. I definately have good control of my fingers and can play a few chords, but I just don't know what to do next. I am taking Guitar 1 at school next year and it should be easy considering I have a little experience. I'm 13, in 8th grade (14 very soon, though). Could you maybe list different elements of guitar I will have to learn (even if I already mentioned)? Or at least offer some advice as to what I need to do to become an expert. Resolved Question: What is the best absolute beginners book for learning the classical guitar?

Hi everyone, I recently re-watched Mission Impossible 2 after years and heard the song 'Nyah', instantly falling in love with the sound of the guitar on it. So I went and purchased a relatively cheap classical guitar because I really really want to learn this instrument. The thing is, I have no knowledge whatsoever of music. I can't read 'tabs', notes etc. I don't even know my chord from my plectrum :P, so I was wondering what the best beginners book is out there for learning my guitar, which will also explain everything else that a complete newbie would need to know. Preferably something that comes with a CD/DVD so I can follow along, but I don't really mind. Thanks for your help in advance. :) more

Resolved Question: How to go about learning guitar......?

Ive been playing guitar for a year and a half, I know intermediate songs (closer to the heart, la villa strangiato etc.) and i never learned any music theory. I can play pretty much anything if in tab form. I barely know the notes on the fretboard and pretty much no chords. Ive tried learning music theory through online lessons but it didnt help. I just dont know where to start. Should i buy books (which is what i prefer)? I just cant figure out music theory because theres is not literal starting point. I want some form of teaching that has step by step learning. What should I do? more

Resolved Question: where to start with music theory?

So, i play guitar, and am at the point where i need to know music theory. Where is the best place to start? learn the modes, major scales, box patterns?? the internet and books will be my teachers, so, what do you suggest i start with? i've been playing for like 8 years, and have developed high manual dexterity in my fingers, i am fluent in playing all chords, open or barred, and changing between them. I can figure a lot of stuff out by ear and can learn songs from watching people play them on youtube pretty easily. but i just want to be a better guitar player, and theory is my answer. I know the pentatonic minor scales for some of the keys, and i know the names/location of the notes on the fret board. so i not a total newbie to theory, but I've always jsut kinda jumped around. where should i start? more

Resolved Question: How to train ears while playing guitar (as opposed to hands)?

I'm an intermediate level bass guitar player, but this question could work for near any instrument. I can play songs and go through scales and all that, but I really feel like it's my fingers are learning shapes (as opposed to my ears learning intervals and patterns). For instance, if I changed the tuning on my guitar to say, drop D, I'd be totally screwed because it'd mess up the shapes. This also makes it difficult for me to go up and down octaves. I try closing my eyes and humming along with the notes I play but I don't feel like a strong connection is being made between where my fingers go and what note is played. Any advice? Specific exercises or tips? I appreciate the help. And yes, I'm aware a teacher would be helpful. I wish I could afford one right now. Thanks.a more

Voting Question: how can i use guitar pro to learn songs on drums?

my friend showed me that guitar pro can do drum tabs too, but i have no idea how to read this. for one thing, i'm not using guitar pro, i'm using TuxGuitar, the free and open source alternative because...well, i have no money for software right now. but it can read guitar pro files and it looks relatively the same, so it's close enough. i opened up the file and it shows me notes. i clicked on the percussion section of the song and there's still notes. that doesn't make any sense, drums don't have notes like guitar and bass (or i could be wrong, i'm a self taught drummer who uses youtube videos to learn songs). either way, i'm really confused on how to make heads or tails of this and i really want to learn this song and have no other way. i'm using the file in the link below if that helps at all. thanks in advance, http://www.911tabs.com/link/?3951540something i forgot to include was that i want to isolate the other tracks (guitar, bass, keyboards) and just focus on the drums, but there doesn't seem to be an option to do that. more

Resolved Question: What's a good way to casually learn to play the guitar?

I took guitar lessons years ago, but back then I was more interested in learning individual songs than actual theory, which I now regret. I have a little (not much, but a little) free time on my hands now, and I can find tabs on the internet and memorize them, but I'd like to go beyond that and maybe pick up a little music theory so I can understand what I'm playing and maybe play some things that haven't been written out note for note. I don't have the money or time for lessons, but I have the internet and a decent acoustic guitar, and I can probably stand to buy a music book or two if anyone has any good ones to recommend. So, any suggestions on where to start? more

Resolved Question: Piano songs, and Advice for a beginner?

I've been playing around on my sisters keyboard for about 2 months now, and I'm really starting to get into it. I've started learning a few chords and I know the notes, you know C D E F G A B and stuff. I've started to learn a few song but some I get stuck and don't finish them, I taught myself play guitar fairly well so I have learned some of the songs I know on guitar onto the piano by ear but its just very simple stuff. I am really getting frustrated with not finishing a song, I have learned parts of "Fur Elise" and "The River Flows In You" but i haven't gotten far. I practice every day (I probably work harder at learning piano than I do with my school work), maybe I'm just getting to far ahead of myself? I don't want to learn super easy songs like "twinkle twinkle little star" or "mary had a little lamb" I want something more challenging but not to hard, Do you know any songs that would be good for me to learn? Also I don't know how to read music sheets and was wondering if that is something difficult to learn on your own (I bet if I could read them it would make things easier)? Also are there any websites that can help me with that? I Thank You in advance, and apreciate any advice that might help me be a better pianist more

Resolved Question: Guitar tapping problems?

However when i tap from one string then move down or up a string i get the sound of the previous string which totally covers up what I'm just then playing. I am not sure if it's feedback, but possibly? ive only recently started to teach myself to pay guitar ive decided to learn stair way to heaven and have 2 problems 1. in the intro do you have to bar the 5th fret, i can semi do both ways but its better to learn the more practical way 2. there are "notes" which are played by hitting the (D and e sting) i dont know how to actually hit both at once without muting G and B which seem rather akward, is worth learning this or carry on just playing just the e note 3. can the part played on a 12 sting be converted to 6 string guitar more

Voting Question: How to you know what position to play a note in on guitar?

So I'm playing some classical guitar, so I am going tab-less. However I have been going over some songs I already knew on guitar but this time without tabs, and there are times when I know that I normally would play, for example F on the 6th fret of the B instead of first fret of the E etc. But I see no indication of this, and would not have had any idea had I not already known the song. So what I am asking is: is there someway to predetermined what position to play something in or some kind of sign or is it simply read it first then find the position that is most practical to play? It just seems so inefficient to have to do this and then relearn what you just learned but in a different position. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advanceP.S I know all the notes on the fretboard already, I just need to know how you decide where to play them when reading classical notation. Sorry for the confusion more

Resolved Question: Can I learn to play rock on a classical guitar?

I know this question is very long, but I need some advice. My sister gave me an old classical guitar last month, and it's my first ever guitar. I was playing with my grandpa's Stratocaster, and I realized that the strings were a lot closer together than on my guitar. Is this good or bad? It felt really awkward transitioning to the Stratocaster and then switching back to my classical guitar. Really, I just want to learn to play because I know that in order to play any genre involving the guitar, you obviously have to know how play the instrument. But the genre I want to play isn't played with a classical guitar. My three favorite bands in order are Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Velvet Underground. I learned to play the intro of Under the Bridge, and I can almost play the whole thing without making any errors. I tried to learn the chorus of the song, and I can play it correctly, but the nylon strings don't manage to bring out the high pitch of the 12th, 13th, and 14th fret required to play the chorus of the song. Everlong and My Hero sound great on my guitar, while Smells Like Teen Spirit, Drain You, and School were just ok. But that may be because I'm not yet comfortable strumming power chords with a fast tempo. For School though, distortion is essential, so I'm not surprised by the awful sound. I try to go for the easier songs since I just started playing and I'm actually not that bad, but my guitar sometimes just doesn't sound that great with the songs I try to play. Go With the Flow sounds absolutely horrible (not the main riff but those really high notes) on my guitar. My mom might get me my beloved Fender 65 Mustang in about a year, but she wants me to have at least the basics mastered. So what do you think? When I get my electric guitar will it be easy transitioning to closer strings, or will it be nearly impossible? I find strumming power chords quite difficult, and I'm pretty sure it's just my lack of skills, but it could be because of the more separated strings on my guitar. If you know anything about this, please include it in the answer as well. I'm 16, so by myth I should be able to learn faster than an adult. I heard that classical guitars are more difficult to play, so will that make an electric guitar easier to play once I get one? I used to play basketball, and my coach used to have us pass medicine balls to each other to make passing a regular ball easier. Does the same theory apply to guitars? Thanks for reading this insanely long question (if you did). more
