I've had my guitar for a while now and i haven't made any progress with learning how to play. My main problem is that i don't know where to begin. in a few months my sister is getting a bass for her birthday and I want to get a head start on learning so I can teach her as well. Okay so i really really really want to learn how to play, but it seems like everytime i go to start, i get overwhelmed by my sucking-ness. So my uncle gave me this 7 day free trial online lessons, but they dont really seem to go anywhere with what they are saying. I mean, ive heard of people teaching themselves without all that crap. Resolved Question: How do I get started REALLY playing the guitar?

I got my first guitar for my 8th birthday, and i'm 18 now. I have been playing it since then but all I do is look up tabs to songs I like and play off that. Getting them down pretty good isn't that hard for me, and I think that i'm experienced enough to take it to the next level. My friend whose a few months younger than me can play circles around me. He can sit there for hours and just make up the best sounding blues you could think of. He is in a band that is actually starting to take off pretty big right now. One of my other friends, his dad can do the same thing. I would love to be able to sit down and jam with them like I do, but not feel inadequate. How can I keep up with someone who knows his scales, knows his way around the guitar and can put his soul into his music? The trouble is that I don't know where to start. Music lessons are way too expensive and most of the time not worth it, and i'm not sure how to use the internet to find these things out for free. Do I start by learning scales? All of the scales? Until I can do them in my sleep? Do I just start messing around with my guitar until something that sounds good comes out? Can someone please help me? more

Resolved Question: What career would be best for me?

I'm 16 and I need to pick my A level subjects in a few months, but I don't have any idea what profession I want to go into once I leave school. At school, my favourite subjects are History and Geography, but the subjects I'm best at are Science and Maths. The only subject I hate is Economics so any banking or financial jobs are out of the question. In my free time, I'm obsessed with music. I can play the piano and am learning to play the guitar. I would definately prefer a job in the music industry, but I don't know many jobs available apart from the obvious ones (performers, teachers etc.). Preferably, a high paying job would be best, but I really wouldn't mind a low paying one if I enjoyed it. Also, a job that isn't the same every day is vital. Thank you for any ideas in advance! more

what do i do? my friend and i made a band. i wrote a ton of lyrics and i've been singing my heart out since i learned to sing(which i think i taught myself). I play my guitar / bass in my free time (which i don't have a lot of due to school. i continue to write lyrics the second they come to my head, but since she wanted to be the guitarist and sing backup she doesn't really contribute. her exscuses are the following: me: hey, i wrote another song and the tune is still in my head, you want to try to work on it? her: sure. when? me: tomorrow at school during break/lunch her: but i don't wanna carry my guitar D: me: please? i really want to get this song finished ASAP. her: will you carry it? me: why? your guitar isn't heavy. her: yes it is D: i don't want to take it to school. you see my problem? no matter what i try (i don't want to break out into a figh) she just won't try. when she's home she uses the computer, watches tv, (doesn't even have hw) but still doesn't even TRY to pick up her guitar. and when she does she does other bands songs, she doesn't try to do anything for our band at all. she also has stage fright.. but she wants to be in the band. not optional: i won't cut her from the band (right now it's only us two and she's my best friend) i can't record her part too (hell i might as well go solo. [also not an option]) i can't just yell at her and tell her she needs to do her part (she gets pissed off as quickly as i do) etc... please help me :( i really just want to get my music career starting *oh, and my other best guy friend is a musician (and a SUPER AMAZING one at that) and he has a band; he agrees with me that she isn't helping the band by being lazy.. but even he knows we can't be seperated. more

How the fuck do I learn to play guitar? I've been getting a lesson when I need help and sitting here and fucking playing same stuff over and over and over until I fucking suck harder at it because I'm tired, yet I still get no better! Of course, I'm probably a tiny bit better than I was a few months ago, but I practice about an hour a day now and there is no real improvement. The repetition is so not fun it makes me want to tear my fucking eyes out! I fucking try repetition but it DOESN'T FUCKING GET ANY BETTER. If you have any advice, please help! I don't need help understanding the gutiar unless you've found a way to do that for free, then I'm very interested. Please don't tell me to calm down, I'm well aware that I'm worked up. I bought myself an acoustic guitar and am trying to learn how to play. I'm just starting out and finally found someone to give me free lessons. The problem I am having is that my fingers are too big. When he tries to get me to play a chord, my fingers touch more than one string at a time. He told me he believed there were guitars that had wider fretboards (sp?) that may be easier for me to learn with. I have practiced quite a bit and this is a major hurdle for me. Besides losing weight, LOL, what are my options? I do not believe practice will make perfect in this situation; even when he shows me exactly how to place my hand/fingers, i am still touching more than one string. ANY and ALL advice is welcome. I took guitar lessons years ago, but back then I was more interested in learning individual songs than actual theory, which I now regret. I have a little (not much, but a little) free time on my hands now, and I can find tabs on the internet and memorize them, but I'd like to go beyond that and maybe pick up a little music theory so I can understand what I'm playing and maybe play some things that haven't been written out note for note. I like him and we had class together last semester and sat next to each other and he helped me with homework and studying. He'd ask me every day how I was or how my day had been and would compliment me on my scarf or boots or etc sometimes. We didn't hang out that semester outside of class stuff - I tried to get him to come to parties but he's sub-free so he didn't want to go (but he seemed sorry). But this semester we went out at dinner with me, him, and another girl from our class. Last week outside the dhall, he asked me if I'd had dinner yet because all his friends already had but I was really busy so I couldn't. And when I was skyping him a few days ago and learned he played guitar and told him I was impressed he offered to teach me. I had a crush on him all last semester but he's kind of quiet.
