I'm a gymnast so I'm used to pain and rips in my hands so that's not really that much of an issue ... I like the sound when I play the keyboard but that's because I'm better at it then guitar .... I have good rhythm and king fingers so that's that aspect sorted and I'm a good student so theory isn't a problem and my memories good so that ok too.... Guitar would be easy to bring with me too but it just seems sooo hard to do .... I'm so confused ? Opinions ?thanks =] more

Open Question: Acoustic guitar or Classical guitar?

I'm a lead/rhythm guitarist in a metal band, and I want to take things slow and easy back downward to soft songs. I've borrowed my friend's unused Classical guitar, learned Romance De Amor, or something, i forgot the name, but the only songs I could play are metal songs on the classical guitar, although I did study the finger plucking with it, and I seem to be good at it. Now, If i were to buy a wooden guitar, should I get a steel string or a nylon string? Is the steel string also good for finger/spanish music? Is the classical guitar also good for acoustic metal songs? Although, I heard that you could play good solo-type songs on the acoustic guitar... true? I just checked out Larrivee guitar demos on youtube, and they seem cool, especially the Guitars Of Pikesville guy. Well, I don't know, i can't decide for myself.Sorry, I meant Steel-String for Acoustic and Nylon String for Classical. more

Open Question: Is 19 too late to start learning guitar for a succesfull music career?

I'm 19 and Ive been learning guitar for about 5 months now, I can play 5 songs, my friend's old band used to have a record deal and he said when I'm good enough I can play rhythm guitar in a new band he wants to get toghether, I know when most bands record their first album theyre like 17-18, is it too late to start a music career? and how long will it take for me to get good enough if I'm taking lessons each week? more

Voting Question: Is there a big difference between knowing a scale and knowing how to solo in a scale?

K I'm not a great guitarist, I know a lot of chords but all I can do is rhythm, occassionally single notes but in like simple patterns. I'm actually a drummer in a band but I use an acoustic guitar to compose songs. The lead guitarist is always able to tell what key or what scale or mode a song is in just by listening to it, yet he says he can "only solo in the key of C," so that doesnt make much sense to me. He recently told me he had learned "the jazz mode and the spanish mode" which I think he said are the Lydian and Mixolydian modes, but does that mean he can now solo within these modes, or does he just know the whole-step/half-step patterns and shapes? Its starting to really confuse me, and I hate trying to write certain songs in the exact right key for him to use a solo in, usually we just don't use solos because of it. When he says he's "learned a new scale" is he able to solo within it, and if he can still only solo in the key of C, what key or mode should I suggest he learn to solo in next? more

Resolved Question: Can I learn to play piano through chords?

Hello, I am a beginning to play piano and I am planning on teaching myself how to play it. I have played guitar before and it seems like through playing chords and singing I was able to become an avid player. Do you think it is possible to learn piano through playing song chords and singing will become effective? I planned to just start off with a song I like and play chords, hoping that I will soon catch on to the rhythm and have a good piano/singer combination. Thank you for your help :)I only want to be efficient enough at piano to accompany my voice. If there are any other techniques to learn piano w/o a teacher, I am open to suggestions. :) more

Voting Question: What is the best way to learn guitar scales?

I learned the E pentatonic minor scale, but I have trouble soloing in other keys and moving the pattern up and down the fretboard. Is it worth learning the major scale and how to form scales with music theory? Do you guitar players learn scales based on notes or patterns? And does anyone have any advice on how I can better teach myself to solo in different keys? (It's kind of lame to keep asking people to play rhythm parts in E all the time) more

Voting Question: Tips for getting better at guitar?

I have been learning guitar for about 3 months now, however my progress is slow. I practice everyday for 30 minutes or longer and can only play Wild Thing and Adam's Song by Blink-182. I know 12 chords and 2 scales. My practice schedule consists of strumming chords to make sure I can play them right, using a metronome to develop rhythm, and practicing switching between chords. Am I making good progress so far? Any tips on how I can get better? more

Voting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?

I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Sorry for the really long wall of text!I know a lot of guitar chords already. Not just the like seven essenial ones but several advanced onesand power chords, what I have trouble with is single noes and barre chords. Also, recommending thins because they'll take me farther if I play it in a band doesn't really make a difference, I already both play drums and sing in a band, I wouldn't be playing any of these other instruments in a band, I'd only use them to compose the songs for the other band members. more

Resolved Question: How do I improve playing the guitar? Will I ever be good?

I mean, I know two songs all in all and I began playing 3 months ago and merely turned seventeen... I don't think I have a good ear and my idea of 'rhythm' is a fist continuously pounding a desk... meaning I have no beat whatsoever. Is this going to drastically affect my guitar learning? I have a hard time learning songs, as well. I'm basically self taught with the occaisonal guidance of a tab book and my experienced father. But he doesn't show me much, all he does is tell me the chords and show me the strum. How do I improve my skill? Is it even possible?HOW DID MY THING END UP IN TENNIS CATEGORY!? I'm sorry, for real. more

Resolved Question: I can't solo on my guitar at ALL. What can I do to improve?

Well...I've done it. I finally started my own Heavy Metal band. Only problem? I'm playing lead guitar, and I can't solo worth a goddamned, and I've been playing guitar for almost 4 years now. Admittedly I've concentrated a lot harder on rhythm, especially improving my power chords and acoustic-ish stuff. But I suppose soloing is my "achille's heal". I feel completely...weak. I feel like a child who's learning how to read, and it doesn't feel good. I want to get better, but I'm embarrassed to go back to the beginning. What do I do? What do I learn? And how can I prevent these feelings of...being stupid? more

Voting Question: How long would it take me to learn bass guitar well enough to play in a band?

I absolutely love music, so I decided to pick up bass and eventually play in a band with my friend who has been playing guitar for 6 years. I know the length it takes to learn bass also depends on some factors so here is a list: -Ive been a percussionist for 5 years -I'm 15 years old -I can read rhythm and notes fairly well -I plan on getting private lessons -I've been told from my teachers that I'm a fast learner -I practice for 3 hours a day -My friend also is giving me tips as well I'm very dedicated, I got my bass a week ago and I've taught myself seven nation army(white stripes), the national anthem(radiohead) money(pink floyd), blisters in the sun(violent femmes) and I'm currently working on learning come together and i saw her standing there(The beatles) more

Resolved Question: Is base guitar easier than guitar, and is teaching yourself drums "worth it?"?

I thought I'd learn some more instruments, like base guitar or something, and I was wondering if I could teach myself along with learning guitar. I'm not saying that it's easier to play, but do you think it's easier to learn and read? I'd also like to learn drums, but I should let you know that my rhythm is really horrible and I can't any two things mechanical at once. I tried playing a drum set and I couldn't do anything. I also bought Rockband and tried to play drums, but I just look like an idiot, flipping around in my chair. xD Should I teach myself base alongside getting guitar lessons, and are drums a bad idea? I think they might be. more

Resolved Question: Getting good at guitar?

Firstly, I don't play guitar, but I do play bass. I want to learn to play guitar eventually but I'm not quite done with experimenting on bass first. Let's say I've been told I have a good ear, impeccable sense of rhythm, and odd musical sense. How much practice is really required to reach the level of say, Dave Mustaine? He's very, very good, but not as great as he sometimes makes himself out to be. I'm just saying. To Patrick: How can I pass judgment on his playing if I have to ask how much time it will take to reach his level? Simple. I've watched and heard him, and at least 50 other guitarists perform extensively. As I said before, he's not bad. The real problem is his ego. We're all given what I like to call "powers of observation".While I'm at it, does anyone have any books, websites, or videos to recommend? more

Voting Question: Picking hand pain while playing fast?

I have recently been learning fast triplet like rhythms that Lamb of God uses a lot.....but my wrist is starting to hurt while I play it. It is like a dull aching pain that hurts right in the middle of my wrist.......why is this and how can I get it to go away? I am holding my hand normally against the guitar so I don't know why this would be a problem.....but it really is annoying. Do I need to strengthen the muscles or what? more

Resolved Question: Are Lead Guitarists generally better than Rhythm Guitarists when it comes to skill?

Or the other way around? I can solo pretty well according to a lot of my friends. But when it comes to rhythm guitar, I absolutely suck. I really want to learn how to play rhythm because it seems so fun. So what do you guys think?I know plenty of chords. I can do barre chords, I can do major and minor, dominant 7th, and some 9th chords. I just suck at strumming.Oh and not to mention powerchords, triads, etc. I finger pick pretty well thoughI'm learning the Jimi Hendrix cover of Hey Joe. I have all the lead parts, riffs and solo down. I just can't do the damn chords.... lolKeith Richards is one of my favorite guitarists!Cowboy Neal at the wheel: That's exactly what I try to do. But i'm just saying, I suck at rhythm. I want to be a well rounded guitarist so that's why i'm working on it more

Resolved Question: Plays viola, wants to learn guitar?

I've been playing the viola for about 4 years, but I want to learn guitar enough to play rhythm for a band. I figured out that i can get my viola to sound exactly like a guitar when i hook it up to an amp and distortion pedal, but i don't know if that would have the same effect for the band as another guitar player. Would learning guitar be more difficult because i already know how to play the viola and the alto clef? Or should i just stick to my viola? more

Resolved Question: What is the easiest Jimi Hendrix song to learn?

Please note that I want to learn the entire song and not just the main riff or the solo. I've been playing for about a year so I'm not too good. Resolved Question: Jazz Guitar Help!!!!?

I had an interesting day as a musician and I have some questions. I have been playing guitar for six years and I play in a rock program whre you form bands and play live shows as well as have lessons. Last month I joined jazz band at school and today I played at this jazz festival with a bunch of other schools. I noticed I got really nervous on stage in front of a judge and didnt follow the music that well. At the time of my solo, I was so scared that i just played random notes of the mixolydian and the minor pentatonic. We were playing a standard 1-4-5 blues to solo over by the way. Anyways it sounded really not professional and I know I havent been playing jazz for a long time but i need to get there. This is my first year of high school and i was playibg next to juniors that were swinging the groove and playing jazzy solos with jazzy scales. I am so used to being considered a good rock player, but now i feel i am in another league with better players. So my question is what shbould i do to improve. Should I learn songs out of the Real Book. How can I practice improv, also how do i improve my rhythm playing. I have a big passion for guitar and I want to get better. Thanks more

Voting Question: Rhythm guitar to bass guitar?

I play rhythm guitar and I was wondering if they are alike because they both keep rhythm? I already know the differences between rhythm and bass, (picking/plucking style, that rhythm plays chords but bass doesnt, etc.), but if I had experience with rhythm guitar would bass guitar be much more difficult? p.s. While playing guitar, I felt more comfortable plucking single notes in the background of songs instead of the strumming... this sounds silly but would this be a sign to play bass?? I have practiced to play bass on the 4 lowest strings of my electric guitar, does that help with learning bass?I never actually intended to become a lead guitarist which is why I pretty much played rhythm guitar...I have actually practiced playing bass (tabs) on the four lowest strings of my guitar more

Resolved Question: How to develop a Van Halen guitar sound?

I'm probably doing about the best I can with my gear, but I want to develop a nice EVH style distortion (AKA brown sound). I know Eddie is known for the Phaser and Flanger effects, but I don't think he used them that much. Only in certain parts of songs. I'm debating whether to use these effects, but it always sounds muddy and over effect driven when I add them. This is my rig: Ibanez RG350 guitar with modded DiMarzio pickups (Evolution in bridge) Fender 15W Blues Junior tube combo amp (always set at a flat EQ - I think that's what Eddie does or close) Digitech RP350 multi-effects pedal (I like this pedal but many of the distortion effects are way too muddy and overdriven. I use the "Stack" effect for an 80's rock/VH style distortion. Lots of guitarists do the mistake of using too much distortion. I did this when I was younger but I've learned it sounds better with less. Plus when you listen to VH and hair metal songs, they usually aren't using heavy distortion on the rhythms. I was told it sounds good to crank the master volume on tube amps but leave the channel volume low. I've been doing that and it seems to sound good. Any tips or thoughts? I know a lot of Eddie's great sound comes from 1) being super good and 2) having a 100W stack. But c'mon, us guitarists know that gear makes all the difference in sound! more

Resolved Question: I want to learn improvisation of guitar solos. I play rhythm, what should I learn next?

I've been playing guitar for almost 4 years. I play pretty good rhythm and I have basic knowledge of scales and keys (what chords should be used in a song) and playing lead (but I only know how to learn and memorize lead guitar solos of songs). I also know how to apply some lead guitar playing techniques, such as fingering pull off, hammer on, vibrato, bend, et. al. But I want to learn guitar solo improvisation, what should I study next? What are the first easy scales I should memorize? What music genres should I learn first?Sorry for the typo, there should be a comma after the word 'fingering'.I can't afford to take lessons from a guitar teacher (though I know it is indeed the best way to learn) due to lack of money, so I will just teach myself. more

Resolved Question: What would you tell a beginning guitar player to learn, advice?

So a guy who is setting up a new server for work caught me looking at guitars online and told me he just got one a couple months ago. It got me wondering, since I am self taught, I had to piece things together throughout the years. It's been about 15 or 16 years now and I completely forgot how hard it is to start learning guitar, just hearing a simple word like hammer-on, or pull off, or harmonic was completely foreign back then, but is as simple as 1-2-3 to me nowadays. I wanted to give him a couple tips for learning, so I told him about chromatic exercises and how to search for stuff on youtube. What I wanted to know was, how did everyone here first start learning, or what did you learn? Did you start off trying to play rhythm or lead? Did you take lessons or self teach yourself? Stuff like that. Also, what are a couple basic things I can tell this guy? Like, what key should he start with? I started with the key of C. Do you think that's a good key to start in? He said he'll start taking lessons, but I figured I would tell him to also get a beginner DVD and chord/scale book, as well as asking other guitarists for tips. Do you guys have any good beginner DVD's and books for him to get?Damn, sounds like I need a tutor as well... lol.Nowhere in the same sentence or paragraph did I mention scales or keys with hammer-ons/pull offs. This question isn't to try to teach myself guitar, its to give advice to someone else just starting out a couple of things to start learning to get his feet wet, so I was making a reference to how hard it is to learn simple things in the beginning, things that are second nature to me, like hammer-ons and pull-offs. I have no clue how you got that confused with keys which I mentioned 3 or 4 paragraphs later. Try reading the question/questions again. more

Resolved Question: To play guitar in a band, do I need to read music?

I've been playing for a few months, and originally, I thought maybe it was possible for me to learn songs by tabs and occasionally by ear. I always admired those who could listen to a song and hear which chords and notes are being played. I use sites like Ultimate-guitar and 911 tabs, I can read tabs and everything, but is that no use for a future musician. Someone told me that no one reads music anymore, everyone follows tabs. If I had a choice, I would prefer to follow my ears then sheet music, but I imagine it would be really hard if I were in a band with someone, and they had an idea for a song, and the only way they could show me, is through written music. I tried in the past to read music, but I was younger then, and so I'll give it another go now. But before I start working up a brain sweat, is this really necessary? People always complain when I miss out extra Information about myself, so here goes! I'm 14 and I want to play in a band with my sister (an awesome drummer), in the near future. I practise rock/indie/pop-punk songs, and play both lead and rhythm. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get back to me with a really good answer! Thanks for reading! more

Voting Question: what do you think of this paragraph?

I am writing a Paragraph about my music history, and I need some help I am open to any suggestion in grammar , structure ,punctuation , omission or any sentences I can add to improve my paragraph this is the Paragraph (I am grateful for the chance of letting me express my huge passion for music. When I was young my family noticed my potential, so they signed me in a music institute to study Al-ood (oriental instrument) but I have always felt that something is missing. At the age of 13,I started to listen to other kinds of music like rock ,jazz ,blues ... etc .besides my local music, so that was a turning point in my life, because my perspective of music has changed and I found my real potential. I started to think how to make music my future career .in addition to that. I became eager to learn guitar. In 2006 I started to save money from my small website designing company, and I bought my first guitar (Ibanez SA 120).I worked hard just to find the right step in the way ,I searched for a teacher but I couldn’t find a proper one because they are very few in number. Finally, I was lucky and I found a very good teacher , I learned almost all theory of the guitar , scales, modes, chords , rhythm, techniques , arpeggios ,licks , Intervals , Note Recognition …, my teacher had a very interesting way of teaching , we chose a song , play it , then made our own Solo on it ,and that played a big rule in sharpening my creativity , trusting my feelings and being more confidant in making my own solo. During that time , I tried to Discover all genres , the beauty of some of them was just overwhelmed, and I found the secret of good progress in learning guitar is depending on my self and self taught. in addition, I bought DVDs for learning. I decided to move it to the next level , I send a Demo to the Tech Music Institute in UK, they asked for: 4 style songs (Rock ,Jazz ,Blues ,Punk) and one cover song, so I created and composed the 4 styles they asked for, and I got the approval for 1 year Master performance ,unfortunately I couldn’t afford it because of my financial status ,although my father is a heavy driver in UAE and supports me financially, still the money was just enough for the airplane ticket. I performed 3 concerts with my friends , and I am preparing for a new one in my college and it will be in April. Finally , I just want to tell you that I know I have the talent ,the potential, the skills and I need this chance and I promise you to improve my talent because this is my only chance to make music my future profession not only an hobby. Resolved Question: Is it ok while getting better at guitar?

Okay I've been playing for at least three years I started in school my last two years, and now that I'm out I got my own guitar. And I can't seem to learn real songs, I know it figuring out the rhythm or just strumming, well then I started writing my own. Is ok to still get better by playing your own music. more

Voting Question: Play an instrument without any talent?

Hey For quite a while now, i've been wanting to learn an instrument. I like the sounds of a guitar and piano, and I really enjoy seeing people play them. I tried them both over at my friends house, but it seemed so incredibly hard to learn (beyond anything I have ever seen, seriously). I also have no musical talent whatsoever, and the rhythm of someone of, well, just name something very negative and you got it. I used to have a year of musical lessons in school but the teacher kind of looked down upon me, making me believing that i'm maybe not cut out for music. I've been re-thinking, but is it wise for me to still try to learn to play an instrument? more

Resolved Question: Rock & Pop: how difficult will it be if we decide to become an All That Remains cover band?

well, i thought about it. I know the lead guitar and drums would be a challenge to learn. our drummer isn`t so sure about learning "This Calling" and "Six" but he will try if we do go through with it. I did the hang of rhythms on guitar and I`m currently learning some blues but I`m sure all four of us can do it.I`ve played for about six years now and i learned many styles of playing. the other guitar player and i know we have to do a lot of guitar work and we are up to the challenge.our singer, she doesn`t mind the vocal style the lead singer uses.our drummer has some doubts but he could try.the bass player know he can do it. more

Voting Question: Guitar picking speed, any tips?

Well, i've been playing guitar on and off for about 3 years so far, and im looking to get into a band. Now, i got rhythm guitar sorted, barre chords are old hat, and normal chords are a walk in the park. But in order to really crank up my playing, ive been looking for inroads into the world of soloing. Now, ive learnt the pentonic scale with help from my uncle, a veteran of blues guitar, and thats fine. Ive even written my own solo. I can play it fast using my fingers, but it looks like everyone is picking, so ive tryed doing this and it just makes my playing much slower and less accurate. Any tips, excercises or advice would be very much appreciated, thanks. :)ooh and also, i forgot to say that im mainly interested in picking specific strings, quickly while soloing.ooh, sorry, i forgot to say, its mainly tips for picking single strings like in the speed of soloing, i wanna get really accurate, thanks though more

Resolved Question: Is playing bass any different than rhythm guitar?

Besides that there's only four strings? could I learn the bass to a song and just play it on guitar since I don't have a bass, and then would I easily be able to play it on bass later on, or would there be any differences? more

Resolved Question: How to Write a Song with a Guitar?

Ok, So I play Guitar and Drums DAILY!. I love to play it's my passion and I have had a natural talent at it. Also, I love to write songs (Country, Rock, Blues) I write them hearing the guitar and drums behind the words and the melody just flows a little lead guitar and its full throttle in my head, however, my big problem is trying to play the guitar to the songs I write. I can never find the right chords or sounds.. So I have tried many times writing songs with my guitar, however I just cannot seem to make it sound the way I want (I am using Acoustic, though I have used my Electric hoping for a chance that it would help). My problem is I cannot seem to express my music on the guitar nor Can I seem to write the songs when I am playing the guitar.. I thought I was limited on chords so I went to youtube and learned new chords and lead licks, I went to guitar shops and bought books on how to play various chords, I have a poster with about 100 different guitar chords on it. I have learned'em all now, I have them down really good, however I still am stumped and cannot seem to pickup on it nor can I solve the problem. So I know it now isn't a lack of knowing chords, it's just some kind of mental block or something. It really sucks because I have made tons of Guitar rhythms using an electric guitar than used my Boss BR-8 to add in my own drums and bass guitar as well as lead, and it always seems to come out awesome, I just can never seem to pick up on writing music with the guitar or getting words to my melodies.. I am looking for any and every suggestion possible. I seriously have been working on this since I was a freshman in High School in 2005, I am graduated and 19 years old and still cannot figure it out.. ALSO, I took ALL the music classes at my High School (4 years worth) from guitar through Bass and Percussion, I also took the History Of American Music (HAM) and Chorus And Band classes as well. So I have a well known knowledge of Music but for some reason this has been bothering me for sometime now!. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How do I know what strumming pattern to use for guitar?

I'm learning to play praise & worship songs specifically, and I'm having a hard time strumming according to any particular rhythm. There is no strum pattern. Do guitarists just make up their own strum pattern, or is it specifically strum according to the notes? more

Resolved Question: Should I take drum lessons?

My sister used to play the drums but she quit a couple of years ago. We still have the drum set and I've been taught a few rhythms or two. Today in music class, our teacher wanted to test everyone drumming. My friends say I'm better than everyone else and I got to learn the beat in just a secong. I really want to play the drums but I don't know if I'll be good at it or if I'll commit to it. I can play a little piano, I used to have Classic Guitar lessons and now Electric Guitar lessons. So should I take drum lessons? more

Resolved Question: Should I buy this electric guitar?

I think I've asked this question here for the 3rd time. -It's an unpainted (but still looks good) lightwood RJ BluesBreaker Les Paul (yes, it's a copy), about US$120 on sale. I've tried it, and it feels and sounds good for me. One of my major concerns is that the brand is not well-known and is by a newly-founded company. Despite this, I've read a lot of positive reviews on it online, all of them gave high scores. -I'm not a beginner, but I'm also not an expert. I can do pretty good rhythm and I study lead. I play a lot of rock, many types of rock, but more on the heavy/hard stuff than the soft ones. I've only been playing electric guitar for maybe 3-4 years. -I jam with my friends a lot, sometimes I play at presentations for parties and other events, but most of the time I just have fun playing/learning songs in my bedroom or teach guitar to my younger brother. Do you think I should buy this? If not, can you recommend others for the same price? more

Resolved Question: Deciding on a bass or electric guitar?

I've been playing the steel acoustic guitar for a year and 3 months now... I wanted an electric from the beginning, but learned to love my acoustic. Anyway, now I'm looking to finally get an electric guitar. I play mostly pop-rock songs... not real hardcore rock or metal. I love the warm tones of the bass and semi-hollow electric guitars though, so I'm kind of torn on what I should get. I know a semi-hollow would be out of the norm for playing poppy, punky songs, but I want something that can sound warm. And I know bass is very different from acoustic, semi-hollow, AND solid body, but I like the idea of being needed in a band and keeping rhythm, along with using more than just my thumb for strumming... Plus I like the sound a lot. It has to be under $300... well, give or take a few tens. And, if you can't help me with this, can you recommend a song or two to learn and some techniques I should know after 1 year? Any good intermediate guitar books would help too. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: I need help with guitar solos?

I've been playing guitar for a little over 4 months now. Since I started on an acoustic guitar, I'm good with the chords and somewhat rhythm. But I need to know more about how to play solos. The only things I know that are close to playing a solo is the basic pentatonic scales and the blues scale. So if you know, can you please tell me what scales I need to learn (in order) so I can become a better lead guitar player. If it helps, I want to play 70's 80's and 90's rock metal and hair bands (like Whitesnake, AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Van Halen) more
