Open Question: What are the differences between guitar and bass guitar?

I have been playing guitar for a few months and do not know much theory, and I recently borrowed my friend's bass. Apparently bass is an octave lower, but other than that are there any differences in terms of theory? If I learn the C Major Scale for guitar, is it exactly the same as on bass? Are all of the notes exactly the same? And please don't just say that a bass is bigger and has four strings. I only want answers pertaining to theory, and not the physical characteristics of the two instruments (which are obvious enough when one looks at them). Only answer this question if you are confident in your knowledge of music theory and prefereably if you play one of the two instruments. Thank you for your help, there is surprisingly little bass theory on the internet. more

Open Question: Good Electric Guitars For Rock or Heavy Metal?

I'm starting guitar lessons and right now I'm contnet to learn on my acoustic, but when I get better (in under or just over a year hopefully) I want to play AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Metallica etc. on an electric. I like Schecter Guitars, and right now am looking at Ibanez RGAs. Please suggest anything under $1000 dollars that is capable of the music mentioned. I would be very grateful. And I don't really care about brands, or Floyd Roses, but as far as design, I like Flying Vs, RGAs, Strats, and Blackjacks. Thanks, I really appreciate it!Good ideas. I like the Flying V, and was looking at the Dean Dave Mustaine VMNTX. A little flashy, but pretty cool. As far as ESPs, I really like the "M", but not much else. I do like the Schecter Hellraisers.... But the music stores where I live I really crappy, I think we have like one record store, and in HMV there is just one shelf worth of metal. So I'll just look at prices and quality between the guitars, and hopefully play some of them to gear which one is best.Thank you Kyle. Although I never really like the look of the Les Paul, it is very reliable, and my guitar friend loves it. The SG looks awesome, especially in red (does it come in black?), and it plays very well supposedly. I think I'll stick with the RGA for now, and start saving up for it. more

Open Question: What is the best way to learn pitch?

I've been playing guitar for around 7 and 1/2 months, but I didn't really practice for like 5 of those months (or just less), that was because I was busy with school. Anyways, right now I'm at the point where I think I can learn absolute pitch. I sing, too, and I can mimic a lot pitches. I can sing on pitch without any help, but the problem is that I don't know what the name of the notes are. However, during my guitar practice (on my own), I've learned some music theory and I know where to find every note on the guitar quickly. Anyways, the question is, what's the best way to being told to sing C# or any note without any other help? I'm saying sing because you can hear, but I mean just hearing the note in your head, too. Right now I'm tuning my guitar in random different tunings and then taking a random note on the guitar, singing it. Then, I'm using my voice as a guide for whatever other string I want to tune. I figured it would help with instruments and vocally, so that's what I'm doing at the moment. Thanks! more

Open Question: Questions for self-taught guitarists?

1) How old were you when you first started playing? 2) How did you learn? (like, did you learn by ear or did you buy a few guitar books) 3) Did you play any instruments before the guitar? 4) How long did it take before you were an OK player? 5) On a scale of 1-10, how hard was it to learn by yourself? I'm 14 and I was thinking of trying to teach myself a little bit of the guitar before I took lessons. My dad knows how to play, and I've been wanting to learn to play for a while. Any extra tips are welcome too =) My dad is also self-taught and I already asked him these questions. He said it took a lot of practice and determination to get where he is now. I'm just getting some more opinions on this before I start. Thanks =) more

Open Question: Where did i screw up here (10 POINTS!)?

Casey Henderson March 14 at 12:10am just wanted to say hi, how ya doing since i probably wont be able to ask in person. you know, cuz you are in wind ensemble and we have diffrent lunches. unless you eat "a" lunch. anyways how are you doin? whatsoever going on? how's life? sincerely, casey Rebekah Douglass March 15 at 3:33pm Hi Casey! Doin' pretty good, learning some new music. We're doing the Carmina Burana in Wind Ensemble, which I think is hilarious. Hope you had fun sleeping in today :P The OGTs are easy but bore you to tears. It was really fun hanging with you at lunch, before we know it the Memorial Day parade will be here and I'll see ya again :) How 'bout you? What's up? -Bekah P.S. I like your profile picture ;D Casey Henderson March 15 at 5:37pm first note i love carmina burana. back at my old school it was the low brass theme song. im doing great, rocking out to the beatles learning i am the walrus on the guitar, and watching Full House. also i wanted to ask you if you can play any other instruments other than french horn. if your wondering, i play guitar, bass guitar, baritone, and piano also. i don't mean to brag. i just get bored of the tuba sometimes. other than that- oh wait! Chamberlain drama queened on us and walked out for about five minutes, then gave a 10 minute lecture. i was laughing on the inside. lolz. well yeah thats all i can say happened today. sincerely, casey Rebekah Douglass March 16 at 4:49pm xD that's awesome! Once during marching band, he was up on the big directors' loft- you know, beside the practice field- and he got so frustrated with us he chucked his headphones off and they fell about 20 feet, then he climbed down, got in his car and left... didn't come back the rest of the night! But we learned the rest of the drill without him, and the next day he told us that was his plan all along, and that he was teaching us "the value of teamwork". Needless to say, I died laughing. No, regrettably I don't currently play anything besides French horn and mellophone. But over the summer I'm going to learn trumpet, and be in Jazz Band next year. I think it's so cool you know all those instruments... hey! maybe YOU could do Jazz Band next year! That would be fun. Phil insisted we eat lunch outside today, Haley and I nearly froze. Come sooner, summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) -Bekah Casey Henderson March 16 at 11:36pm oh big lmao! i really want to do jazz band playing bass guitar, if i only owned one. you see i go down to the kroc center every day after school and use thier bass, so i'm sure theyd let me borrow one. that is unless mr bradshaw will let me use a school one...... so hey theres this thing at the krok center next thursday called "lock in" its me 2 other people and my cousin maybe. its free we get to watch movies open gym, lazer tag, food, some prayer food, did i mention food? sorry i love food and my belly shows. anyway all you need is permission slip signed, and i could just ask Bradshaw to give you it. any way, i think i have an actual reason to practice next year. i got to get into wind ensemble so we can actually see eachother. i think you'll ace trumpet, and if you like we could meet after school and i can teach you some piano. i can barely read music but i've self taught myself songs like: let it be, axel f, final countdown, mario theme, don't stop believing, and dream on (not to brag again) anyway.... what kind of music are you into? Beatles, ACDC, Aerosmith like me or do you like others. im just in to old things myself. I just enjoy antique stores. sorry i believe i just rambled. well sorry about sitting outside. i casn understand it was probably cold. Today was loads better with chamberlain. no hissy fits but Srgt. Bradshaw said "no talking at all" and of course kris had to say " i enjoy this piece" we are playing a song called exprressions. it's to easy. well those were the highlights of my day.... p.s i forgot to warn you... when i feel comfortable talking to a person, i tend to talk a lot and say stupid things... just to warn you. sincerely casey Casey Henderson March 16 at 11:37pm dang! i wrote a lot! Rebekah Douglass March 17 at 4:09pm :) it's all good, i'd rather have someone say too much than too little. (I hate when someone sends you a message and all it says is "hi" or "ok".) I apologize but i don't think i'll be able to come to the kroc center, I hope you guys have fun though! Aargh. My brain is fried. We had the writing section of the OGT today and I could barely think of anything to write about. There were two prompts: "write to a trusted adult about a time you were treated unfairly", and "write a persuasive essay about a problem you see in the community and how to solve it." The first one was kinda fun, I wrote about when my old gym teacher split up the basketball teams so it was the bigger basketball-team girls vs the scrawny non-athletic 7th graders. We lost three times, and he took more

Open Question: My guitar teacher told me to learn 6 songs..I haven't done it and I have the lesson tomorrow?

I have a SERIOUS procrastination problem, with everything I do, even if its something I want to do, I will still procrastinate with it. I don't know why. It frustrates me. Like yesterday, I was just like ''Oh sure you have all day tomorrow''... Its 7.30pm and guess what? I haven't done it. I've been playing since September..If I actually practiced as much as I should, I would be great. See, last week, he went through all the sheets he has given me and told me to play the songs, I attempted..I couldn't actually play most of them with fluency. So he told me to learn 6 songs off by heart cause he ''knew I could do it''. I know bits of certain songs, but I only know one full song off by heart which is pretty much the easiest song ever (teenage kicks) and I don't think I should go to him saying ''hey, I've learned this'' 'cause its the most beginner a song can get.. What do I do now? :( I have no motivation. (thats not just for guitar, its for anything I ever do) I'm 15 btw. I DO care about guitar and I DO want to be really good, but with my procrastination problem and my non-motivation... I feel like I can't do it... Please help... I know I am the one paying him so its not as if he can get mad at me as such..But he'll be dissapointed in me which is 100x worse.. more

Open Question: Need approval of middle names and need help choosing middle names for characters?

Ok, I desperately need middle names for these characters - all apart from my character of Kate who is named after her mothers dead sister Lauren. Could you please suggest names?? Name: Arwen Mitchell Young (Middle name needed) DOB: 9th June 1991 Never whispers, often argues with Jane because they are similar. The ultimate tomboy, although she is not dedicated to the IRA or any other force which sinead or her friends support. She will fight against – although is terrified of the possibility of her family being killed. Naturally curious – which is what gets her in trouble with Paddy. The middle child of Sergeant Andy Mitchell and Jane Armstrong. Looks like Jane, but has Andy's eyes, although at certain angles she is the image of Lauren. She is quick witted and has learnt to shoot due to growing up in various zones of danger. She is nicknamed 'Hell Minion' with her catholic friend, Sinead (see below) and is a protestant. She is an experienced explosive expert- although despises war. She is also bisexual and there are heavy hints that her and Sinead are in a polygamous relationship with Arwen's boyfriend Jackie. She has a heart of gold and is good with children . She is eighteen. She is named after the character in Lord of the rings due to the fact that her mother was reading it when she went into labour. Name: Kate Lauren Armstrong-Mitchell (approval of middle name needed) The eldest sister to Arwen, she is funny and witty although her and Arwen tend to ignore their younger sister Sadie whilst together. She loves her family, and is a good medic. Aspires to be a singer when she grows up, and can play guitar. A good medic. She is dating an Ulster boy named Jerome. She is blonde with pretty eyes. She is aged 25. She is close to her younger sister, and acts as a pillar to Arwen in time of her needs. She is the most like her father – peacekeeping. She doesn’t enjoy concerning herself with various underground societies, but does so to try and keep tabs on her sister. She is the one who Arwen turns to when she needs her the most. Nicknamed Katie by her sisters - but named for the character in the 'Taming of the shrew' her dead aunty Kate's favourite book, as well as receiving her first name as a middle name. Name: Sadie Armstrong-Mitchell: (Middle name needed) The youngest of the sisters, she is a pretty little girl, aged ten. Quite wicked and stops her middle sister (Arwen) from smoking because she strongly dislikes that. She is a good footballer and plays it with several kids on the street on several occasions. Adores her sisters with all her heart; often shows her love by giving them sudden embraces. She has blue eyes, unlike her sisters but like the original Lauren’s. Named after the song 'Sexy Sadie' because her father listened to the White album shortly before she was born. Sinead O'Brien: (middle name needed) Arwen's best friend. She is the archetypical Irish girl with flaming red hair and winsome green eyes. She is fluent in gaelic and plays the fiddle well. Her father is an ex-member of the IRA - although she usually doesnt attend meetings due to the fact she enjoys the air too much. She takes politics and is the one who develops a photograph for Arwen. She is an expert shot. A good catholic girl, but enjoys breaking rules. She likes to hum tunes on the stairs, and generally annoys her best friend, Arwen out of enjoyment. She always carries a gun for protection. Andy Mitchell: (Middle name needed) An ex-army man. Served in Ireland for most of his career. A peacekeeping man, although very handsome still. He is 51. The girls’ father. Is an ex-soldier, although a consultant in the army. He is protective of his children, and pretends that he doesn’t enjoy the fact that he has 3 girls and mockingly laments this fact. He loves them all, and always carries a gun with him. He never speaks about his experiences in the army, but when he does it's under stress. He teaches Arwen how to fiddle with a cars engine, Kate how to sew and Sadie how to play football. He’s got call signs for his daughters and wife when they are in their various cars. Vamp: Arwen Sunshine: Kate Joie de vivre: Sadie Punk: Jane Jane Armstrong-Mitchell: middle name needed. A year younger than her husband but looks several years younger than her true age. Born in 1960. She is a journalist for the Irish papers, and is neutral in the conflict of IRA and Britain. She is a good mother, despite appearing disinterested. She is brutally honest and loves all her children equally and lovingly. She will die to protect her family. Doesnt believe in God – putting her at odds with most of her daughter’s catholic friends.I do know it is illegal to carry a gun - but Sinead llives on the other side of the law as a part time 'freedom-fighter' and the fact that her family are under constant watch for someone to murder. Andy carries a gun due to his special forces action. He is legally able to obtain the gun because he has a liecence while Sinead's are illegally obtained. more

Open Question: Acoustic Electric Guitar questions - Ovation Celebrity vs Fender Sonoran?

I'm starting out on guitar and purchased an Ovation Celebrity (CC28). I was also considering the Fender Sonoran. I chose the Ovation because of the built-in tuner. My question is about which is easier to play? I read some reviews on the Fender and the reviews seem to say it's one of the easiest to play guitars. What about the Celebrity? I do love this guitar but I was just curious if the Fender is a 'much easier' guitar to learn on? Opinions?? more

Open Question: Beginner guitar help please.?

Hi, I am attempting to learn how to play the guitarm but due to my diability this is a massive challenge which I am determined to master. I am getting on reasonably well with learning chords and switching between them but I am looking for information on strumming patterns. Is there a standard notation on how you should strum a tune? If so, can you point me in the right direction? Also, can anyone suggest some simple sings that are aimed at beginners? Thanks for any help you can provide. Your help is greatly appreciated. more

Open Question: How to play progressive rock on guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, piano, and vocals?

My band right now is playing psychedelic rock, and even though we've kind of moved towards ska-punk and post-hardcore punk on a few occasions, I think it's been a kind of an unspoken agreement that eventually we will be playing progressive rock, when we figure out how. We all try to make that kind of impressive music reminiscent of Rush, Pink Floyd, and The Mars Volta. I know how to play all of these instruments except for trumpet. The trumpet and piano aren't very important in this band, they aren't technically in the band, more like guest musicians. In this band I play drums and I'm usually the lead vocalist, unless the song fits a baritone instead of a tenor, then the guitarist sings instead. We only have one guitarist, but we have written several songs that use two guitars, and when we record them we have the same guitarist just record twice. We all have a pretty advanced grasp of all rock concepts, most musicians should since its likely the easiest genre to play. We have a small amount of blues experience, I've been playing bluegrass and folk-rock in my spare time on guitar, and I'm going to get three guitar books soon, "scales and modes," "jazz guitar," and "blues guitar." We also have a little bit of reggae experience, I know basic ska and reggae techniques or guitar, piano, and drums. So if we're going to be writing progressive rock, is there anything else I should know? Should I be using 2-5-1 progressions like in jazz? How do I combine the different styles that are commonly associated with progressive rock? Should I learn anything about metal, because all I know are power chords and blast beats with metal (and I could pobably figure out the whole drop D tuning thing without much trouble) and I don't know if there's anything else metal-related that progressive bands incorporate into their music? What other techniques should I learn, and should I teach my band members the techniues I learned while playing bluegrass and folk-rock? Any tips on odd time-signatures, in drums I'm fluent with 6/4, 4/4, 3/4, 5/4, 7/4, 9/8, 12/8, 6/8, and 2/4, but on guitar I usually only use 4/4. I own an acoustic guitar, messed-up drumset, and keyboards, should I invest in other instruments to compose this music? Thanks, sorry for the LONG question. more

Open Question: Explanation of what certain signs mean in guitar tabs?

I'm finally learning how to play my guitar and I love it. I've started on very simple stuff like the intro to "Come as You Are" by Nirvana. However I've been running into signs in tabs that I don't know the meaning of which makes them impossible for me to play. If anyone knew of a site, or could just list the signs and their meanings I would greatly appreciate it. A couple examples of the signs I'm talking about are; "/", "p", "h", "b", and literally any other sign you would know of, I'm sure I'll run into it eventually anyways. Thank you so much. There's a part in the song "Sweet Home Alabama" that reads " 0/2" on the second string from the lowest string. How do I play this because I don't have anywhere to slide from?http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/l/lynyrd_skynyrd/sweet_home_alabama_tab.htm That's a link to the tab. Thanks more
