Open Question: for slide blues, which slide should i choose?

i love the blues and i want to learn how to play with the slide. im not sure which slide to purchase though. many old blues players have used the medicine bottles as a slide, and i saw them in a guitar center. my only concern is that they are made by dunlop, and all of the dunlop pedals ive had have broke! sure, pedals and slides are 2 different things but after 3 broken dunlop pedals (not to mention some of my friends broken dunlop pedals), i am a little cautious about buying it. does anyone have these dunlop bottle slides that could help me out making a decision? more

Voting Question: Poll: Have you heard the song "Stairway to Heaven"? And the solo?

Learned it note for note, and HAVE had it in my back pocket since the summer of 1977 when my cousin originally laid it out for me in like a 3 part process; and it worked really good I think...I don't normally give guitar lessons; however, in '97, someone that caught us while making a living on the road,,approached me and asked IF, I would be interested in teaching him...22year old dude from Chicago,,,name J.T..(We are still friends to this day),, but anyway,,, I didn't think he was ready really and I was actually right; but when I got home to south lake tahoe, Ca where AM not living at this particular time; but usually DO, as it is my home, and have lived there just up from the clubs @ the Nevada/California state line...So,, after a couple of weeks,,I get a call from J.T..who thought he'd move on out to Tahoe.. Big change for him being from the south part of chicago...but he had a love of the blues..and my cousin who IS a blues man..(Lonnie Mack)..Lonnie did make a regular stop at "Legends"..(Buddy's joint), and JT saw us there,,,although, he just happend upon me, at a booth, foolin' with someone's accoustic,,,and trying to get it to take a tuning,,and stay... So, I was using "Stairway to heaven" as a "control"...and he heard me..and I CAN imitate J. Page's version And one of my own,,and have actually been doing it since high school in the mid '70's when I'd play the whole tune,,,about 12 or 13 minutes long when laid down properly,,,and sang with the right "Feel",,etc...I have actually officially taught that song to about 5 people in the last 30+ years,,,and the last one WAS J.T,,,and he paid me a total of $750.00, but I had to give him a whole new way of aproaching the instrumant,,,And "Undo" some really bad habits that he'd picked up somewhere;;So, we spent a good 3 weeks 'De-Programming" his incorrect aproach to the guitar in general,,,as it prevented him from being able to "Move on" alone..and teach himself stuff, and he couldn't grasp what changes, and how subtle, and chilly the whole mellow thing was, when it came to getting his abiltiy to play with a, or as part of, maybe is what I meant to say.. of a Unit...or team,,,and if enough "Nare-Do-Wells" showed up in the same place, then maybe even a quick "Thow-it-together band"...and I even layed out the basics or the basic Nashville picker's # system that they,,them..and I'm not ashamed to say I myself have better success with that old number way of dealing with other players..it's just a better way... You know what i'm talking about,,??? Like if we didn't know each other; but we could still just walk on each other's bandstand and earn a night's work because of the # system...?? Like,,I turn to you and simply say: this song's an Old Merle Haggard thing called "Footlights",,,(for the "Chance that you Might already know of the song..what it sounds like, or anything at all that could help...),,,so,,let's say you say "I'm not a walking, fossil steve,,and I have never heard of your ancient monk's chant......So,, we're lucky 'cause even though I don't actually read music near well enough to be of any practical use when entertaining for paychecks and percs....BUT..I can look at you and even if it's noisy and wildly busy in the club...we will be fine, even without ever having practiced together at any time in the past..I'll say,,,"Merle's Footlights"..in "D",,, go 1, 4, 5, with a 7th,,,get "Out of the way" for a lead break that my Telecaster Master over there's going to ease into from HIS que, that's coming from Bob,,"Grizzly" Smith,,,my Pedal Steel Guitar genious...(Watch out though; as this only applies with Bob, during actual sets throughout the night, and the genious thing will go away later,,,and the opposite effect replaces the other...Anyway,,,after the Guitar's lead break,,there's one verse, and one more run at the chorus..however?? just as Steve wraps his solo,,we're going to modulate on full step...alright with that so far??? Remember,,we started in "D"..right?? So,,You must also either be a, or become a,,singer of harmony parts,,as I'm not going to take bread out of our pockets just because one of us can't sing harmony...You'll find that to be the case in virtually every situation, where there's a club owner, and pickers, that do it as thier sole form of making a living.. So,,back to the quick rundown for the opening number of the nights 3rd set.. after the lead break, there's a full step modulation, You sing 5th part with me on the very last 2 lines of the song...And just follow, and watch my eyes,,,and within' a week or so we'll sound like we've been playing with one another for many years... Right on/??? Anyway...that's pretty much what J.T got for the "Really just sybolic" 500 bones..(I always get something out of teaching a pretty much of complete beginner what I've been toiling with since the summer of '68, when I was 7 years old,,and got my 1st electric guitar at the "Flea Market" in San Jose', CA,,, for 20 bucks,,,An old "Kay",,and an old SearsSilvertone amp..1/12,,and almost no controls, of any kind... So,,I've got "some" experience under my belt that does tend to make things easier not for me only,, but everbody leans on me from time to time, and It 'doesn't bother me man.. Who do I think I am anyway??? You know what I'm sayin'.. we're all in it to sound FANTASTIC, and for the drunks, and customers,,,to drink more,,and more,, that's what we're technically there for...it helps to remember that..And if your thinking "Oh **** that,,I don't want to deal witht that ****...here's the thing that real music player's must face sooner or later..and that's "Do you want to do this for your weekly bread,,,pay your bills, and send the kids to school, etc..??? Or,, do you want to work at K-Mart,,and meet us on Friday & Saturday ONLY??? Well,, then sorry dude; gotta let you go on your way..because we've chosen to do this for more money than Sears can pay us for selling new tires,,or working at some "Jive-Turkey" music store,,pedaling stripedaling strings and giving away picks to Johnny the Trombone student that hangs out at the store, pounding on one of the Drum Kits until we all want to choke the little turd,,and his trombone... I choose to show up for 4, maybe 5 sets a night,,,4,,maybe 5 nights a week.. Scale's usually around $500.00 a week these days; although I make Much Much, more when we hit the road,,,,that's a whole nuther trip,,,Are you through with this email now??? Steve with the Stairway to Heaven Licks, & tricks... elcamaro72@hotmail.com Bear in mind man; I wasn't able to read your whole email...and took you to be pretty much a novice learner young player..No offense...I came back and used the "Edit" thing on here to help me explain why this letter is so ,well,,the way it is...I was worried that you wouldn't follow my "Jive talkin',,which I tend to do..(I still call pickers "Cats" sometimes... I know I am a dinosaur, and that I'm one for the road... but,,that's show biz,,,Right?? One thing..zzzwhy I"mOne thing..zzzwhy I"m back here...I have been laying that Stairway lick..well, all the licks,,of all the different parts of the song as it winds it's way all the way to "And she's buying a Stairway.......to...hea.....vennnnnn/// ziiiiiiiiiipzaaaaaaaaaaptidahdahdaydadad… whatever..I'm kind of "Bozo'd" tonight man... but; my 1st reaction when I read your whole email was "NO, NO,,it's NOT that hard man,,, however..even in your email,,you remind me that '1977 was a little over 30 years ago,,,,and once the "Cat was out of the bag"...that I knew that particular tune, the WAY I did,, well, you can imagine what happens next... before you know it the same clown is standing on a cocktail table howling "FREEBIRD" over and over; and I usually give in to that request as well. As it took Almost as long to learn the proper way to deliver that beautiful song without wrecking it... "Less is more" if you can dig what I'm shoveling on that line of thought..?? It's always been about the quality for me..and my family..of which almost all play for thier bread. And have as long as my memory's started forming...so,,,"FreeBird" was a "Must Learn" for me back then too.. BUT,,I have some how lost my "Feel",,and I can't get a decent "Freebird" out of the old wooden box without a month or so to "Woodshed" ...all of them for that matter... I'm zipped man... email me IF perhaps you want to discuss any other musical interests's ,,as I have a few of my own lately and not a soul that has the foggiest idea what I'm "Lippin'" about.. Later man! Halsey... more

Voting Question: Could someone tell me roughly what grade i am in the guitar?

I do have lessons, but i dont do grades with it and i dont want to change tutor because he's really good. I only have him for a year and I can play mostly of the arpeggios shapes accurately. I know these following scales and could improvise around them: major, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, natural minor, melodic minor, harmonic minor, blues scale, pentatonic scale. I can read music but not really fast and can't apply it to the guitar, i can do it with the keyboards easily. and i can learn by listening but not very good sometimes i recognised what mode is the music. i mostly play joe satriani's stuff. more

Resolved Question: Sick of my parents not controlling my crazy 9 year old sister?

my parents let her do anything she wants, all she has to do is cry, scream and stamp her feet. this isnt about me being jealous of her, i'm 14 and very mature compared to my peers. i am forced to teach my sister how to play the guitar alongside her guitar tutor, he has given her a simple version of yellow submarine with 4 chords, G C A7 and D. I can play the full version properly but i'm smart enough not to tell her that the version she is learning is the simple version and sounds nothing like the original song. she is so stubborn that she won't admit that she cannot play the song and needs help, i am more than willing to help her because i love her and have passion for music. i explained to her that we will start off playing it slowly and then speed up and eventually sing along with it, she refused to play it slowly so i asked her if she already knew the song, she screamed yes. so i asked her to play it to me at full speed, she played it with lots of mistakes and not holding each chords for the correct amount of beats. of course i did not tell her that, i praised her and tried to explain that she should try playing it different way. (i think that just made her even more determined that she was correct) it basically ended up with her crying /screaming and slamming the door out of my room. my parents immediately sucked up to her crying act even though there were no tears in her eyes. they genuinely shouted at me and didnt wait for an apology or explanation from me. bad parenting much(?) another example: we were in the home improvement store buying light switches or something. she sees the paint section and runs there, picks a dark blue shade of radiator paint and screams that she wants this paint in her room. her room was painted about a month ago, yet my parents suck up to her and try to convince her that this is radiator paint and you need emulsion for the walls. even though re painting her room is out of the question my parents still negotiate with her!!! we end up buying the correct blue paint. we go home, she screams because she wants to paint her room now. my dad reasons with her and manages to negotiate a later date. an hour later, she screams, my dad paints her room. now i'm 14 and i can understand that if you tell a child that you will do something for them next week and you do it an hour later, you will make them cocky and next time they will know that they can get you to do anything by screaming and stamping their feet. i'm more annoyed with my parents than my sister because they are letting her spiral into this mess. what can i do to convince them and my sister that they need to change their ways.Btw, she is having behaviour problems at school, she has trouble eating so she is underweight, AND she has sleeping problems as she refuses to sleep without my mother sitting next to her. I blame all of this on my parents. I mean cmon, what 9 year old kid cant get to sleep by themselves?I'm asking this here because i love her so much, i cant just sit back and do nothing, but then i cant be rude and try to teach my own parents how to bring us up. more

Voting Question: Which guy would you choose?

Guy A: Tall, handsome, footballer's build, blonde, blue-eyed, midwestern, very set in his ways, major in economics, likes to party, loyal, incredibly smart, comes from a wealthy family, gives a lot of compliments, is very time-oriented, makes an incredible effort to be interested and learn about things you're interested in, similar social circles, has supported you a lot when you've had problems but hasn't really understood them, more thinking than feeling. Guy B: Average height, good-looking in an artsy way, slim but muscular, dark hair, dark eyes, theater major, plays guitar and sings, really funny, easy to talk to, passionate, emotional, easy to confide in and identifies with what you're saying, doesn't have similar friends as you do- though he has a lot of them, is a little naive about the modern world but makes an effort, has similar music taste as you do- though not in TV shows or movies, share a common phobia, more feeling than thinking. Thanks! Just conducting a little social experiment :-PIf you could include your age (if you feel comfortable sharing) as well- that'd be helpful! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Don't want to teach my friend guitar?

I have played guitar my whole life, and sung/wrote music, and play other instruments. Out of the blue, my friend has decided to learn, and wants me to teach her. I reluctantly agreed after she argued 'why not?' But now, she's been telling people at school she plays before I've showed her anything, and even put up pictures of herself on facebook holding her Dads guitar. Upside down. Its just so fake! And she absolutely hates country and jazz music which I like, and always made fun of me for it, but now she's like it's biggest fan! What can I do? more

Resolved Question: How do I get started REALLY playing the guitar?

I got my first guitar for my 8th birthday, and i'm 18 now. I have been playing it since then but all I do is look up tabs to songs I like and play off that. Getting them down pretty good isn't that hard for me, and I think that i'm experienced enough to take it to the next level. My friend whose a few months younger than me can play circles around me. He can sit there for hours and just make up the best sounding blues you could think of. He is in a band that is actually starting to take off pretty big right now. One of my other friends, his dad can do the same thing. I would love to be able to sit down and jam with them like I do, but not feel inadequate. How can I keep up with someone who knows his scales, knows his way around the guitar and can put his soul into his music? The trouble is that I don't know where to start. Music lessons are way too expensive and most of the time not worth it, and i'm not sure how to use the internet to find these things out for free. Do I start by learning scales? All of the scales? Until I can do them in my sleep? Do I just start messing around with my guitar until something that sounds good comes out? Can someone please help me? more

Resolved Question: PLEASE READ AND COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

This is the first chapter of my book. Does it move too fast? I looked up at my wall and let my eyes fill with angry tears. How could he just up and leave? He was a star now, but I missed him. Charles’s picture hung everywhere. I had to be his biggest fan. He was my best friend. He was just a pop star now. I wanted my best friend back. On the posters he was posing, sometimes with his shirt off and his awesome abs showing. My heart pounded hard every time I looked into the eyes of each of his posters. Man, was I in love with him. Charles was coming back though. He was staying for two weeks this summer. Maybe I could convince him to come home permanently. My tears spilt over and I sobbed into my pillow. A knock sounded at my door and I wiped my eyes. “Come in!” I called. The door opened and a familiar face popped in. It was Charles. I jumped off my bed and threw my arms around him. He hugged me to his chest. “Someone’s a big fan,” he put me down. His voice was deeper than it had been six months ago. He walked around my room, looking at each of the posters. “You have nearly every poster made of me,” he turned back to me and hugged me again. “I missed you,” I mumbled. “I missed you too,” he let go of me. He looked over at my guitar. “You started playing?” He smiled at me. I nodded and picked up the guitar. I sat on my bed and adjusted my fingers. “I first saw you under the stars, when I started school In Seymour,” I started strumming the guitar. “I don't tell you how I feel cause . . .” I smiled. “No one is there to help me send.” Charles sat next to me. His foot tapped to the beat and he smiled at my guitar. It was just like his. I changed chords a few times then started the chorus. “I think of you every single day, I think about you everyday. I like how you are a sweet, loving person, it's a pleasure to be sad around you,” this was true for me. This whole song was true, I loved him so much. He was the best friend I met in grade school outside the school at night. Charles was still tapping his foot, but now his hand slapped against his knee to the beat as well. “My life would be complete if we were together. When I started school In Seymour, I could only hope that we could be together. Naivety plaguing me,” I sung louder. Charles’s face was full of approval. Both of his feet tapped in unison, his hand tapped against his knee, and his other hand was resting on my shoulder. “I think of you every single day, I think about you everyday. I like how you are a sweet, loving person. A fight here or there but they weren’t that bad,” I strummed the guitar on my last chord and looked over at Charles again. “Wow,” he chuckled. I blushed and took out a small book from under my mattress. “These are my songs,” I handed it to him. He flipped through the book and smiled at me. “Wow, you wrote all of these while I was gone?” he got up and looked around my room again. “I didn’t notice a few minutes ago, but you changed your room since I was last here. Besides the posters I mean,” he looked at my bed. I had changed the covers from blue to red, one of my favorite colors. “Yeah, and I got a new desk, and added a couch in the corner,” I pointed to the couch. “Do you think you could teach me that song you were singing? I’d like to learn it,” he plopped down on my couch. I shrugged and nodded, looking into his hazel eyes. His brown hair was neatly cut, like it had been before he left. I was glad that there was one thing that didn’t change about him. I stared into his eyes for the longest time. I didn’t really notice when he got up and waved a hand in front of my face. I shook my head and blinked a few times, trying to clear my head. “You okay?” he sat down next to me again. “Yeah,” I took a deep breath. “Here, let me teach you some of the chords,” I adjusted my fingers on the strings again. “Not right now. Your graduation is tomorrow, right?” he leaned against my headboard. “Yeah,” I leaned my guitar against the wall and pulled my knees up to my chest. “Well, I have an early graduation gift for you,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out a little box. He handed it to me and I opened it. It was a little bracelet in it with my name on it. “Do you like it?” he slipped it onto my wrist. My name, Elizabeth, was carved into the silver. “I love it,” I gasped. He patted my hand and leaned back against the headboard again. We talked for a while, catching up on what he had been doing in Hollywood and what he was doing after he left. It pained me to know he was leaving in only two weeks. “You know, I’m going on a world tour when I leave. I’m going to Hollywood first to pack though, then I’m going to Italy, Japan, China, Russia, then tour around here,” he tucked his arms behind his head. “Really?” my heart hammered in my chest. I wasn’t going to see him for ages. He nodded. “Yep,” he got up and leaned against the wall. “I really don’t like being a pop star sometimes. All I want toHe nodded. “Yep,” he got up and leaned against the wall. “I really don’t like being a pop star sometimes. All I want to do is put on a few shows around the country, not go on a world tour,” he sunk to the ground. I changed the subject. “Did you ever get a girlfriend in Hollywood?” He looked up. His eyes were suddenly filled with tears. I jumped off my bed and knelt beside him. I hugged him and he hugged me back. “What’s wrong?” I pulled back. “I did have a girlfriend. She dumped me right before I came here. I told her I was excited to come here because I would get to see you, then she dumped me,” he wiped his eyes. “It’ll be okay,” I patted his shoulder. “Thanks,” he smiled. more

Resolved Question: Do you think learning and playing as many songs as you can is the best way to expand your musical vocabulary?

OK - So I'm mainly a rock/blues guitarist. I often will hit a flat spot and run out of ideas during improvisation - I have been told by my teacher that the best way to become a fluent musician is to simply learn and learn and learn and learn many many many songs! - so that I can build up my musical vocabulary. I have spent the last 2 years learning songs (ranging from 1 minute pieces to 5 minute pieces) - I have noticed some improvement in my improve but I would have expected more after 2 years of consistent practice (i.e. one new song per month and approx 1 hr of practice per day!) I can't seem to integrate the phrasing/licks/runs and examples from the songs I learn into my improvisation. My question is as follows: Do you think that simply learning songs with the hope that someday it will emerge and be expressed in my improvisation is the best way to learn? Or should I be more deliberate and take time to compose pieces, learn more scales, cover more of the neck of the guitar etc... i.e. should I be doing the laborious stuff (the boring scales/drills and stuff like that?)? Will this speed up my progress? more

Resolved Question: Can I use my guitar playing to attract women?

I am almost 21 and do not really have much (none) luck in the women department. I have been playing guitar for 6 years now, I am not one of those douches who learns 3 chords to try and get laid. I really like playing classic rock/blues (especially Led Zeppelin and Stevie Ray Vaughan music) but I also play other styles too. I was even in a band for a short while. Most people other than my close friends and family don't even know that I play guitar. This is probably seems dumb but hey it couldn't hurt to try, right? So I guess my real question is do women dig guys who play guitar and are actually good at it? more

Resolved Question: Learning electric guitar techniques?

Thanks for checking this out. Finally got a new start this past Christmas and have been self teaching, plus one lesson, on learning to play. My question what is the best approach, suggestions? I read tabs and try to play certain songs, I watch countless videos on youtube about playing and try to follow along. I am working on different scales, etc. But i always wonder is there a certain order I should be trying to take this all in? There is a TON of variables to learn to make it all come together of course. And I understand practice, practice, practice is the key. Just curious if there is a "order" that would be very helpful to learn? I love rock, blues, type the most. Any suggestions, help would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: How to switch between major and minor?

Well i'm talking about guitar here, and I've heard a lot of blues players talk about playing in minor, and also incorporating major. If i'm playing in minor (as in box 1), how do I switch to major? And don't say 'play the major scale' cos i don't know what that is. Also, if someone could guide me to where I can learn the five blues boxes, that would be great. more

Resolved Question: What scale do I use to solo in E?

I am finally learning theory after a number of years of playing guitar. I have learned a twelve bar 1-4-5 blues progresssion that is E-A-B and back to E, etc. I am confused about what pentatonic scale to use. Can I use a pentatonic scale that starts on fret 12? If so is it 1,4 1,3 1,3 1,3 1,4 1,4? If not, which scale do I use? Is there a mode and if so where should it start? Ive been told pentatonics are best for blues. Thats what Im trying to learn how to play. Also, what ey is that progression I am playing? Is it E or E minor? I am also confised about that... If rythym is playing 145 in E major, Do I use a Major or minor pent scale? Sorry about the confusion, I am lost. more

Resolved Question: What is the best guitar for a petite lady with small hands?

Hi, I am an adult female but have very small hands and am petite generally. I would like to learn how to play the guitar. I am a total newbie. I am interested in playing rock, jazz and blues styles. I think I need a singer songwriter kind of tone. I am looking for a reasonably priced but good quality guitar because I want the best sound possible. If the sound is not warm, mellow, sweet and buzzless I won't want to play! I want as full a sound as possible for the same reason. Can I get a good sound from a 3/4 guitar? What other guitars might be suitable? Thanks for your help! more

Resolved Question: Jazz Guitar Help!!!!?

I had an interesting day as a musician and I have some questions. I have been playing guitar for six years and I play in a rock program whre you form bands and play live shows as well as have lessons. Last month I joined jazz band at school and today I played at this jazz festival with a bunch of other schools. I noticed I got really nervous on stage in front of a judge and didnt follow the music that well. At the time of my solo, I was so scared that i just played random notes of the mixolydian and the minor pentatonic. We were playing a standard 1-4-5 blues to solo over by the way. Anyways it sounded really not professional and I know I havent been playing jazz for a long time but i need to get there. This is my first year of high school and i was playibg next to juniors that were swinging the groove and playing jazzy solos with jazzy scales. I am so used to being considered a good rock player, but now i feel i am in another league with better players. So my question is what shbould i do to improve. Should I learn songs out of the Real Book. How can I practice improv, also how do i improve my rhythm playing. I have a big passion for guitar and I want to get better. Thanks more

Voting Question: How can I get a non-rock singer comfortable singing rock?

My friend is a female (low alto) that sings mainly jazz and R&B, and sings it very well. Her tone is well built for those genres, such as very soft and mellow lows, a smooth and thick-sounding midrange, but her high end is too mellow and lacks power and presence to cut through the mix like a "rock voice" should be able to. Because of this, I'm guessing, she's afraid to venture out of her genre and/or not motivated to. She sounds a LOT like Brooke Fraser. (Youtube her for her solo work..) Now I'm a guitar player, and I can go from a smooth jazz tone to a lead rock tone with a twist of a knob and the press of a button, so I may be biased. I believe that no one's voice can be built solely for rock and rock alone. R&B singers, country singers, and pop singers just need to learn vocal techniques used in rock, and that there is no "ideal" rock vocal tone. All this is just my opinion. I was in her shoes a few years back. On guitar I started out playing jazz, moved to blues-rock and pop-rock, then to hard rock, and finally metal. If I didn't venture out of my genre, I wouldn't be the useful guitarist/musician that I am now. I hope you all can see how strongly I feel about this. Is there anything I can tell her to get her to get her more comfortable singing rock? Or anywhere outside her genre for that matter. Any artists that trained in another genre that later moved to rock? more

I've been playing guitar on and off for about a year (9 months in total i'd say) and I think I've learnt all the beginner stuff i.e. open chords, note names up to the 5th fret(ish), basic theory (sharps, flats time signatures etc) played a couple of metallica and GnR riffs done a solo from nirvana and so on. But that's pretty basic and for the future I wanna go down the road of learning blues, where do I go from here? i'm guessing scales, which is fine but everytime i've looked into it i've kinda had trouble understanding it so could anyone tell me of any good informative resources. Resolved Question: what do you think of this paragraph?

I am writing a Paragraph about my music history, and I need some help I am open to any suggestion in grammar , structure ,punctuation , omission or any sentences I can add to improve my paragraph this is the Paragraph (I am grateful for the chance of letting me express my huge passion for music. When I was young my family noticed my potential, so they signed me in a music institute to study Al-ood (oriental instrument) but I have always felt that something is missing. At the age of 13,I started to listen to other kinds of music like rock ,jazz ,blues ... etc .besides my local music, so that was a turning point in my life, because my perspective of music has changed and I found my real potential. I started to think how to make music my future career .in addition to that. I became eager to learn guitar. In 2006 I started to save money from my small website designing company, and I bought my first guitar (Ibanez SA 120).I worked hard just to find the right step in the way ,I searched for a teacher but I couldn’t find a proper one because they are very few in number. Finally, I was lucky and I found a very good teacher , I learned almost all theory of the guitar , scales, modes, chords , rhythm, techniques , arpeggios ,licks , Intervals , Note Recognition …, my teacher had a very interesting way of teaching , we chose a song , play it , then made our own Solo on it ,and that played a big rule in sharpening my creativity , trusting my feelings and being more confidant in making my own solo. During that time , I tried to Discover all genres , the beauty of some of them was just overwhelmed, and I found the secret of good progress in learning guitar is depending on my self and self taught. in addition, I bought DVDs for learning. I decided to move it to the next level , I send a Demo to the Tech Music Institute in UK, they asked for: 4 style songs (Rock ,Jazz ,Blues ,Punk) and one cover song, so I created and composed the 4 styles they asked for, and I got the approval for 1 year Master performance ,unfortunately I couldn’t afford it because of my financial status ,although my father is a heavy driver in UAE and supports me financially, still the money was just enough for the airplane ticket. I performed 3 concerts with my friends , and I am preparing for a new one in my college and it will be in April. Finally , I just want to tell you that I know I have the talent ,the potential, the skills and I need this chance and I promise you to improve my talent because this is my only chance to make music my future profession not only an hobby. Resolved Question: What is a good name for this character?

This is for a fan fiction, I won't go into what it's for. But basically the main character has a twin sister who does not possess the same let's say "abilities". When her twin goes off to learn about his abilities she is stuck going to your average public school (this is set in England). No-one ever pays her any attention and she constantly forgotten about. They even call her by the wrong name which hurts her a lot. They know nothing about her, they've never met any of her friends and don't know what she gets up to at school. She is in fact a very smart, pretty and talented girl. She gets almost straight As (bar one or two subjects where she gets a B). She's singer and can dance okay, in fact she's captain of her school's Glee club (I don't know if British schools have Glee clubs but they do in my story), she's an excellent piano player having self taught herself, can play quite a few songs on the acoustic guitar because her best friend plays and has taught her a few things like I'm like a bird by Nelly Furtardo and stars in many lead roles of her school drama plays (she's in drama club). She has a large and strong circle of friends and a few boys chasing after her yet no boyfriend (may get one in the story). However the girl feels left out when amongst her family and their friends who all have these abilities she's the only one who doesn't. She feels overshadowed by her twin who is the favourite. Everyone thinks she has no talent but she does just of a different sort, she can control elements and do all sorts of things that in its own little way is ten times more powerful than all there's put together and since she is not being taught to control them it is dangerous and these problems have the intensity to destroy things like buildings, houses etc. The only problem is that these powers are influenced or rather the more intense the person's feelings are the stronger and more dangerous they are. And with the girl being depressed (her family forgets she exists, she feels ashamed and hateful towards herself because she doesn't have the powers they've got), sense of self loathing and anger towards these people with abilities will this 15 year old choose to use these powers for good or for evil? Either way will her so called family cotton on to the fact that she has these powers before it's too late or before she gets herself or someone else she knows killed? Will these powers help make the world a better place or make it crash down in pieces around them (metaphorically and literally)? She is 15 years old as stated before, with black hair that's shoulder length, green eyes with blue flecks, she's about 5'3 and is reasonably thin. Thinking of all this what is the best name for her? I was thinking something sweet so you can't think anything bad of her. I was at first thinking Grace but now I'm not sure. more

Voting Question: Guitar picking speed, any tips?

Well, i've been playing guitar on and off for about 3 years so far, and im looking to get into a band. Now, i got rhythm guitar sorted, barre chords are old hat, and normal chords are a walk in the park. But in order to really crank up my playing, ive been looking for inroads into the world of soloing. Now, ive learnt the pentonic scale with help from my uncle, a veteran of blues guitar, and thats fine. Ive even written my own solo. I can play it fast using my fingers, but it looks like everyone is picking, so ive tryed doing this and it just makes my playing much slower and less accurate. Any tips, excercises or advice would be very much appreciated, thanks. :)ooh and also, i forgot to say that im mainly interested in picking specific strings, quickly while soloing.ooh, sorry, i forgot to say, its mainly tips for picking single strings like in the speed of soloing, i wanna get really accurate, thanks though more

Resolved Question: How to Write a Song with a Guitar?

Ok, So I play Guitar and Drums DAILY!. I love to play it's my passion and I have had a natural talent at it. Also, I love to write songs (Country, Rock, Blues) I write them hearing the guitar and drums behind the words and the melody just flows a little lead guitar and its full throttle in my head, however, my big problem is trying to play the guitar to the songs I write. I can never find the right chords or sounds.. So I have tried many times writing songs with my guitar, however I just cannot seem to make it sound the way I want (I am using Acoustic, though I have used my Electric hoping for a chance that it would help). My problem is I cannot seem to express my music on the guitar nor Can I seem to write the songs when I am playing the guitar.. I thought I was limited on chords so I went to youtube and learned new chords and lead licks, I went to guitar shops and bought books on how to play various chords, I have a poster with about 100 different guitar chords on it. I have learned'em all now, I have them down really good, however I still am stumped and cannot seem to pickup on it nor can I solve the problem. So I know it now isn't a lack of knowing chords, it's just some kind of mental block or something. It really sucks because I have made tons of Guitar rhythms using an electric guitar than used my Boss BR-8 to add in my own drums and bass guitar as well as lead, and it always seems to come out awesome, I just can never seem to pick up on writing music with the guitar or getting words to my melodies.. I am looking for any and every suggestion possible. I seriously have been working on this since I was a freshman in High School in 2005, I am graduated and 19 years old and still cannot figure it out.. ALSO, I took ALL the music classes at my High School (4 years worth) from guitar through Bass and Percussion, I also took the History Of American Music (HAM) and Chorus And Band classes as well. So I have a well known knowledge of Music but for some reason this has been bothering me for sometime now!. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Guitarists! Good online resources for learning Delta Blues on guitar?

I've really gotten into the sounds like Blind Willie McTell and Son House and I want to be able to play like them. So far, I've learned to play the standard blues progressions and solo over them in the blues scales pretty well, but it sounds a lot more like Blues-Rock or "Electric Blues". The basic "text-book" blues stuff is so straightforward (12 bars, blues-scales, occasionally departing from blues-scales to resolve on chord-notes, etc), but it sounds nothing like the down-home feel. I want to add a folksy finger-picking, slide element to my blues. Where to start? more

Right now I am knowledgeable with basic chords and strumming, I am classically trained musician but not on guitar, which is all Greek to me.
