I have been trying to teach myself guitar, following an instructional DVD. However, when I play the chords, it doesn’t sound nearly as good as the guy on the video. I know a lot has to do with inexperience and a cheap guitar, but it should sound somewhat similar, right? My electronic guitar tuner says it’s tuned. Would any of you guitar experts do me a huge favor and make sure everything sounds…normal and correct? So a guy who is setting up a new server for work caught me looking at guitars online and told me he just got one a couple months ago. It got me wondering, since I am self taught, I had to piece things together throughout the years. It's been about 15 or 16 years now and I completely forgot how hard it is to start learning guitar, just hearing a simple word like hammer-on, or pull off, or harmonic was completely foreign back then, but is as simple as 1-2-3 to me nowadays. I wanted to give him a couple tips for learning, so I told him about chromatic exercises and how to search for stuff on youtube. What I wanted to know was, how did everyone here first start learning, or what did you learn? Did you start off trying to play rhythm or lead? Did you take lessons or self teach yourself? Stuff like that. Also, what are a couple basic things I can tell this guy? Like, what key should he start with? I started with the key of C. Do you think that's a good key to start in? He said he'll start taking lessons, but I figured I would tell him to also get a beginner DVD and chord/scale book, as well as asking other guitarists for tips. Do you guys have any good beginner DVD's and books for him to get?Damn, sounds like I need a tutor as well... lol.Nowhere in the same sentence or paragraph did I mention scales or keys with hammer-ons/pull offs. This question isn't to try to teach myself guitar, its to give advice to someone else just starting out a couple of things to start learning to get his feet wet, so I was making a reference to how hard it is to learn simple things in the beginning, things that are second nature to me, like hammer-ons and pull-offs. I have no clue how you got that confused with keys which I mentioned 3 or 4 paragraphs later. Try reading the question/questions again. moreResolved Question: How do you read guitar tabs?
I just got a guitar yesterday I've had no previous experience with music, I got an Epiphone PR-4E Steel string Electric/Acoustic I watched the DVD and learned 3 major chords E, A, and D after that I thought chords were pretty boring and everytime I play A major my guitar buzzes. I tried searching up some tabs and I could play the first bit of Coheed and Cambria's Wake Up but when it got to the hammer on bit I just gave up and got frustrated can someone tell me how to do a hammer on and pull of in playing the song. Here's the tab CAPO IV Standard Tuning Intro/Verse- "I'm gonna ride this plane..." "I'll do anything for you..." "So leave yourself intact..." e----------------------------------------------| b------3--------------3------------------------| g---------0--------------0-----------0---------| d------------0--------------0----------0-------| a---3--------------3-------------2h5-----2-----| e----------------------------------------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b---2-------2p0---------------------------------| g-----0-----------------------------------------| d-------0---------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e-----------------------------------------------| Chorus- "The morning will come..." e-----------------------------------------------| b-------------------------3---3---3-3p0---------| g---------0---------0---------------------------| d-------0---------0-----------------------------| a-----2---------2-------------------------------| e---3---------3---------0---0---0---------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-----5---5---5---5p4-----4---4---4---4---------| g-----------------------------------------------| d-----------------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e---5---5---5---5-------5---5---5---5-----------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-------------------------3---3---3-3p0---------| g---------0---------0---------------------------| d-------0---------0-----------------------------| a-----2---------2-------------------------------| e---3---------3---------0---0---0---------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-----5---5---5---5p4-----4---------------------| g-----------------------------------------------| d-----------------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e---5---5---5---5-------5-----------------------| I also found it really hard to stretch from fret 2 to fret 5 for the hammer on.I've learnt simple chord progressions I can go from E minor to G major and E major to A minor. The problem I'm really having is the buzzing it seems to be coming from the bridge this happens when I usually play chords but minimal buzz happens when I play an open string. I also got the first bit of Wake Up ok, I just don'r know how to do a pull off, I can hammer on from fret 2 to 5 now. How do you do a pull off in these examples; 2p0 or 4p5? I also need help with tuning when I try to play along to a song, it just doesnt sound right I have an electronic tuner but I'm thinking of getting a chromatic one. Should I take my guitar to a guitar tech to see what's causing the buzzing? moreResolved Question: im 17 and want to learn to play acoustic guitar. whats the best guitar? best dvd or cd lessons? cost?

A male coworker that worked with me at Verizon got a job in IT and moved out to Vegas with his friend. A female friend that I have been friends with for a few months, after being out of work since March and looking around Boston for work, just started an IT job in Vegas this week. Is Las Vegas calling me, baby? I do not have a Computer Science degree but I have learned some stuff from my work at Verizon, State Street Bank, temp jobs, and helping run the networks for a family business. Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention and here I am as a guy who can't even program his DVD to record TV shows is trying to incorporate Oracle on a LAN with Proxy Servers and well guess what it's all running fine now thank you very much. What fields seem to be going well in the Las Vegas area. I am thinking IT for the gaming community but also other areas as well. I have several years of college teaching experience. I have a sales background though it is mostly in telemarketing and retail. I have done some training and I would really like a job with advancement potential as my MBA is on the wall collecting dust. Are you working in Las Vegas now? Do you know anyone who is? What areas seem to be in demand in terms of job fields and careers? What is the cost of living in Vegas? My female friend is working as an independent contractor and she is living with a friend for now until she can arrange for living expenses or just see what she takes income and find a place of her own. My male buddy is in a hotel with his GF until she gets a job and then they will get an apartment after that. Isn't this recession a blast? I have lived in Boston most of my life, but the warm weather and the pretty s are luring me west. One particular woman I have in mind that I want to be working closer too. It would also be nice to see Gary again and play some guitar. Let me know if you have the low down on Vegas for work.Great Yurida, the main motivation is that a music buddy moved there and not this gal I was seeing is working out there. So that would help me to find something that is actually a good fit for me. moreResolved Question: I would really like to learn blues slide guitar, need help finding best tutorial books/dvds etc...?
