Open Question: Beginning Guitar???????????
Well I want to start playing the guitar. I really don't want to pay to get guitar lessons so what are some good beginner tips on learning how to play the guitar? I have an acoustic guitar right now. moreOpen Question: Guitar Questions...(I have some but I may need to know more)?
What are some of the top guitar brands? What are the best guitars for beginners? How much (avg) would lessons cost per month? Average cost for a good guitar (all kinds)? And I don't know what kind of guitar to pick (electric, accoustic...?) Witch is best for what? I really want to learn how to play the guitar! I'll teach myself if I have to (when I set my mind to something I don't give up!).But my parent you know...parents...So I have to convince them to get me lessons and a guitar etc. I just need to know all these question (maybe more) (especially the cost ones because my parents already pay for my school and next year HS) so that I can convince them etc. Please and Thank You! :D moreOpen Question: How long will it take my to learn guitar?
I've learnt how to tune, hold (properly) and play G major, C major and D major chords (but cant switch between them quickly) on a acoustic guitar. This took me about a hour and a half (split over two days) using internet tutorials. How long would it take me to be able to play a few basic songs reasonablely? I'm just doing this for fun so I don't want to take any lessons. moreResolved Question: How do I convince my parents into getting me a guitar?
They think its a waste of time and money. I really really want to learn how to play guitar, but I don't know how to convince them into buying me one and getting lessons. What should I do?? They think I don't work hard in school as it is, and a guitar will just make me more off task. Also, they said that if I do I have to choose between a guitar, and lessons, and a cell phone! What should I do?They say bring home straight A's, and you'll get whatever you want, whenever you want. But, its not easy. How do I do this, and is there any other way? Do you think the guitar is really worth it? moreOpen Question: What to practice on guitar?
I've been playing for about 7 months now, and i know those basic chords, and a little bit of barre chords, but i recently started practicing scales. Now, i learned the Am and Em pentatonics, ofc, in all five positions, and i find it overwhelming to learn every scale type, in every key, in every position on the neck and i find theory so boring. I need some advice on which scales are the best to begin with, besides pentatonics, and are there some good exercises 'cause my main problem is, i've been practicing for a long time and my speed and accuracy don't seem to increase. P.S. I also think it has to do something with the fact that i practise on acoustic only. All those youtube lessons and crap are done on electric, and i somehow think that i can increase my skills further by playing an electric. Is that true? moreOpen Question: Learning to play guitar ?

I have musical ambitions, I'd like to be able to have a career making music. I know its a long shot, and I keep things in perspective, but I want to try for it anyway. I want to learn the guitar and the piano. I've tried various online guitar courses but have gotten frustrated and never completed any of them. I think mainly because I worry that somehow I'm doing something wrong and just not having the confidence to think that I'm learning it right or making progress on my own. But then I see these people that are completely self taught and play things by ear, it impresses and intimidates me at the same time, I worry that these people are just inherently more talented than I will ever be and maybe I'll never get anywhere with this. Anyway, I guess what I'm wondering is, will taking private lessons for some time give me the head start that I need to do well and have a better understanding of music or should I just look for new techniques for self teaching? Thank you for any advice. moreVoting Question: Can I become a piano player or a piano teacher?
Im 17 years old & I have always loved music. I have been playing the guitar for the past 7 years & I can play anything on the acoustic & the electric. I thought myself how to play & when I went to 1 lesson, they told me there was no need for lessons because I have a natural gift with reading & playing music. I have really grown fond of the piano. I have never played it, though I want to learn. I think I want to try & master it. How can I become a piano teacher? Is it to late to start learning now? Is the piano harder to learn, than than the guitar? Do I have a chance of becoming a great piano player if I start off now? & I mean GREAT? How long should I practice for & should I teach myself or get thought? How long will it take to be able to teach the piano & where should I go & what should I do? I Hope you can answer my questions. Please write whatever you want & please try & give me some good advise. Thanks :) xxx. moreVoting Question: Is 19 too late to start learning guitar for a succesfull music career?

And the solo?
Learned it note for note, and HAVE had it in my back pocket since the summer of 1977 when my cousin originally laid it out for me in like a 3 part process; and it worked really good I think...I don't normally give guitar lessons; however, in '97, someone that caught us while making a living on the road,,approached me and asked IF, I would be interested in teaching him...22year old dude from Chicago,,,name J.T..(We are still friends to this day),, but anyway,,, I didn't think he was ready really and I was actually right; but when I got home to south lake tahoe, Ca where AM not living at this particular time; but usually DO, as it is my home, and have lived there just up from the clubs @ the Nevada/California state line...So,, after a couple of weeks,,I get a call from J.T..who thought he'd move on out to Tahoe.. Big change for him being from the south part of chicago...but he had a love of the blues..and my cousin who IS a blues man..(Lonnie Mack)..Lonnie did make a regular stop at "Legends"..(Buddy's joint), and JT saw us there,,,although, he just happend upon me, at a booth, foolin' with someone's accoustic,,,and trying to get it to take a tuning,,and stay... So, I was using "Stairway to heaven" as a "control"...and he heard me..and I CAN imitate J. Page's version And one of my own,,and have actually been doing it since high school in the mid '70's when I'd play the whole tune,,,about 12 or 13 minutes long when laid down properly,,,and sang with the right "Feel",,etc...I have actually officially taught that song to about 5 people in the last 30+ years,,,and the last one WAS J.T,,,and he paid me a total of $750.00, but I had to give him a whole new way of aproaching the instrumant,,,And "Undo" some really bad habits that he'd picked up somewhere;;So, we spent a good 3 weeks 'De-Programming" his incorrect aproach to the guitar in general,,,as it prevented him from being able to "Move on" alone..and teach himself stuff, and he couldn't grasp what changes, and how subtle, and chilly the whole mellow thing was, when it came to getting his abiltiy to play with a, or as part of, maybe is what I meant to say.. of a Unit...or team,,,and if enough "Nare-Do-Wells" showed up in the same place, then maybe even a quick "Thow-it-together band"...and I even layed out the basics or the basic Nashville picker's # system that they,,them..and I'm not ashamed to say I myself have better success with that old number way of dealing with other players..it's just a better way... You know what i'm talking about,,??? Like if we didn't know each other; but we could still just walk on each other's bandstand and earn a night's work because of the # system...?? Like,,I turn to you and simply say: this song's an Old Merle Haggard thing called "Footlights",,,(for the "Chance that you Might already know of the song..what it sounds like, or anything at all that could help...),,,so,,let's say you say "I'm not a walking, fossil steve,,and I have never heard of your ancient monk's chant......So,, we're lucky 'cause even though I don't actually read music near well enough to be of any practical use when entertaining for paychecks and percs....BUT..I can look at you and even if it's noisy and wildly busy in the club...we will be fine, even without ever having practiced together at any time in the past..I'll say,,,"Merle's Footlights"..in "D",,, go 1, 4, 5, with a 7th,,,get "Out of the way" for a lead break that my Telecaster Master over there's going to ease into from HIS que, that's coming from Bob,,"Grizzly" Smith,,,my Pedal Steel Guitar genious...(Watch out though; as this only applies with Bob, during actual sets throughout the night, and the genious thing will go away later,,,and the opposite effect replaces the other...Anyway,,,after the Guitar's lead break,,there's one verse, and one more run at the chorus..however?? just as Steve wraps his solo,,we're going to modulate on full step...alright with that so far??? Remember,,we started in "D"..right?? So,,You must also either be a, or become a,,singer of harmony parts,,as I'm not going to take bread out of our pockets just because one of us can't sing harmony...You'll find that to be the case in virtually every situation, where there's a club owner, and pickers, that do it as thier sole form of making a living.. So,,back to the quick rundown for the opening number of the nights 3rd set.. after the lead break, there's a full step modulation, You sing 5th part with me on the very last 2 lines of the song...And just follow, and watch my eyes,,,and within' a week or so we'll sound like we've been playing with one another for many years... Right on/??? Anyway...that's pretty much what J.T got for the "Really just sybolic" 500 bones..(I always get something out of teaching a pretty much of complete beginner what I've been toiling with since the summer of '68, when I was 7 years old,,and got my 1st electric guitar at the "Flea Market" in San Jose', CA,,, for 20 bucks,,,An old "Kay",,and an old SearsSilvertone amp..1/12,,and almost no controls, of any kind... So,,I've got "some" experience under my belt that does tend to make things easier not for me only,, but everbody leans on me from time to time, and It 'doesn't bother me man.. Who do I think I am anyway??? You know what I'm sayin'.. we're all in it to sound FANTASTIC, and for the drunks, and customers,,,to drink more,,and more,, that's what we're technically there for...it helps to remember that..And if your thinking "Oh **** that,,I don't want to deal witht that ****...here's the thing that real music player's must face sooner or later..and that's "Do you want to do this for your weekly bread,,,pay your bills, and send the kids to school, etc..??? Or,, do you want to work at K-Mart,,and meet us on Friday & Saturday ONLY??? Well,, then sorry dude; gotta let you go on your way..because we've chosen to do this for more money than Sears can pay us for selling new tires,,or working at some "Jive-Turkey" music store,,pedaling stripedaling strings and giving away picks to Johnny the Trombone student that hangs out at the store, pounding on one of the Drum Kits until we all want to choke the little turd,,and his trombone... I choose to show up for 4, maybe 5 sets a night,,,4,,maybe 5 nights a week.. Scale's usually around $500.00 a week these days; although I make Much Much, more when we hit the road,,,,that's a whole nuther trip,,,Are you through with this email now??? Steve with the Stairway to Heaven Licks, & tricks... elcamaro72@hotmail.com Bear in mind man; I wasn't able to read your whole email...and took you to be pretty much a novice learner young player..No offense...I came back and used the "Edit" thing on here to help me explain why this letter is so ,well,,the way it is...I was worried that you wouldn't follow my "Jive talkin',,which I tend to do..(I still call pickers "Cats" sometimes... I know I am a dinosaur, and that I'm one for the road... but,,that's show biz,,,Right?? One thing..zzzwhy I"mOne thing..zzzwhy I"m back here...I have been laying that Stairway lick..well, all the licks,,of all the different parts of the song as it winds it's way all the way to "And she's buying a Stairway.......to...hea.....vennnnnn/// ziiiiiiiiiipzaaaaaaaaaaptidahdahdaydadad… whatever..I'm kind of "Bozo'd" tonight man... but; my 1st reaction when I read your whole email was "NO, NO,,it's NOT that hard man,,, however..even in your email,,you remind me that '1977 was a little over 30 years ago,,,,and once the "Cat was out of the bag"...that I knew that particular tune, the WAY I did,, well, you can imagine what happens next... before you know it the same clown is standing on a cocktail table howling "FREEBIRD" over and over; and I usually give in to that request as well. As it took Almost as long to learn the proper way to deliver that beautiful song without wrecking it... "Less is more" if you can dig what I'm shoveling on that line of thought..?? It's always been about the quality for me..and my family..of which almost all play for thier bread. And have as long as my memory's started forming...so,,,"FreeBird" was a "Must Learn" for me back then too.. BUT,,I have some how lost my "Feel",,and I can't get a decent "Freebird" out of the old wooden box without a month or so to "Woodshed" ...all of them for that matter... I'm zipped man... email me IF perhaps you want to discuss any other musical interests's ,,as I have a few of my own lately and not a soul that has the foggiest idea what I'm "Lippin'" about.. Later man! Halsey... moreResolved Question: Is it possible to learn guitar and piano at the same time without a teacher?
I just started learning how to play some songs on guitar (by YouTube tutorials) but I also really like piano, I have a begginner book and I have learned how to play some songs out of it (it wasn't that hard cuz I already knew how to read music cuz I used to play clarinet and oboe) but it seemed like everyone says piano is harder than guitar but for me it has been opposite, is that just because I'm a begginner? Also I want to take guitar lessons this summer, but I also wanna learn piano, would it be too much to learn them both at the same time? Could I possibly self-teach myself one of them? I have always LOVED the sound of the cello and wanted to learn to play it. I am a 19 year old college student and have been taking piano for around 9 years (I am at a grade 8 level) and took guitar lessons for a few years. I can read music quite well, but I am bad at playing things by ear. Would it be quite difficult for me to learn? Also, how much would a cello and lessons cost? Would learning it just for myself (not to play in an orchestra or anything) be worth the cost? Thanks... moreResolved Question: Ways to better myself at the guitar...?

I'm 16, never played the bass before but I want to. Screw the fact that I'm a girl. I have a problem with budget though. I'm not big on low quality, stupid, one-use stuff. So are there any shops (particularity in Tai Po or Tsing Yi or even Mong Kok because those are the areas I stay/go to a lot) that sell bass without charging me overprice? Online auctions are okay too. But I have to admit, this is really tempting: http://hk.f2.page.auctions.yahoo.com/hk/auction/b14808189 Unfortunately. 1) I don't read Chinese despite being half Hong Kong 2) I know about guitars and which stuff is good, which isn't, but I have no idea about bass. So... does this seem worth it, or is it a one-use thing? After all, it's pretty cheap, not to mention the fact that it has an amp together with it (I think). But I don't see a brand so I'm hesitating. Oh, and I've never played the bass before, it'll be my first, but I still want something that would last or that wouldn't give me a hard time in learning (I do plan to take lessons, but I plan to self-learn as well) If above is really a one-time thing, anyone who knows good shops and share them with me will be loved. Thank youI re-checked the link, I know a LITTLE chinese, so I got confused: does that auction include the bass guitar itself or just a tuner and amp? moreVoting Question: Need help figuring out strumming patterns.?

I'm 16, and looking into buying an acoustic guitar. I really like singing, and well, I'm not that good, but I think with a guitar to play along to, I could get more into it. Questions: 1. Thank in advance moreResolved Question: What songs do you suggest for beginners in guitar-playing?

like free? without having to take any guitar lessons in real life? and save all the money? moreVoting Question: How can I learn guitar?
I've been doing guitar for about two months and it is just really hard for me for stuff like tuning and when I play a chord it sounds god awful and my parents are mad because of them wasting money on lessons when it sounds mediocre please help I really want to play moreResolved Question: How do you play guitar?
I mean like how do you learn ? I want to teach myself because my mother works very hard and can't afford lessons for me.. But the thing is I can't read normal music. I know guitar must have notes you MUST know how to read right? I starting watching this guy on youtube. He shows you cords(I think they are called) like D cord and so on.. But I can't read music so I figured its useless to me.. So do I need to know how to read music ? And how do I teach myself that and how to play guitar ? http://www.youtube.com/user/JustinSandercoe moreVoting Question: Good acoustic guitar songs?
I've been playing the acoustic guitar for three months now and i'm not taking any formal lesson at the moment. I trying to learn siple songs from the tabs online. I'm wandering if anyone knows any good songs that aren't to difficult for me to learn? moreResolved Question: I wanna learn how to play 5 instruments, help!?
I wanna be able to play the drums, guitar, bass, piano, and harmonica. I'm advanced at guitar already and I take lessons, but what should I play next, while focusing on guitar too? I know bass would be easy to teach myself, and so would the harmonica... So lessons; drums or piano? moreResolved Question: How do I get started REALLY playing the guitar?
I got my first guitar for my 8th birthday, and i'm 18 now. I have been playing it since then but all I do is look up tabs to songs I like and play off that. Getting them down pretty good isn't that hard for me, and I think that i'm experienced enough to take it to the next level. My friend whose a few months younger than me can play circles around me. He can sit there for hours and just make up the best sounding blues you could think of. He is in a band that is actually starting to take off pretty big right now. One of my other friends, his dad can do the same thing. I would love to be able to sit down and jam with them like I do, but not feel inadequate. How can I keep up with someone who knows his scales, knows his way around the guitar and can put his soul into his music? The trouble is that I don't know where to start. Music lessons are way too expensive and most of the time not worth it, and i'm not sure how to use the internet to find these things out for free. Do I start by learning scales? All of the scales? Until I can do them in my sleep? Do I just start messing around with my guitar until something that sounds good comes out? Can someone please help me? moreResolved Question: Beginner Guitar Question! Halp :( :) :( :)?
So I'm starting off playing the guitar, love how the solo's sound in like every song (lead guitar gogogo!) , I got an Ibanez RG120 :) anyways, Basically i'm starting out with nothing, well...the instrument and amp yes, but no teacher, and no real knowledge about it. I've learned very little over the course of a few months, because the only thing i do is occasionally look up the tab to a song i like and learn the intro. i only know about 5 or 6. I heard learning chords was number one...however, when i look up how to play songs with chords, i don't understand any of it, and theres always all these "tune your guitar in low E" or odd things liek that, i'm assuming i'm getting too far ahead of myself. I'm thinking about lessons, which woudl be awesome, but if i COULDNT do that....can anyone recommend anything that could help me start? i tend to look at my guitar and say, you have every song in the world in you, i just have to figure out how to get it out... so, any advice...or anything that could get me started, is greatly appreciated. Thanks! moreVoting Question: Beginner Guitar question...?

I really can't choose... I was thinking either Acoustic Guitar or Keyboard since I have them, or possibly Drums, since I had a set when I was like 4-8 years old, but then we sold them... I have never taken any instrument lessons, but I really want to learn how to play something. Music seems like much more of productive way to spend my time than doing what I normally do, so that is why I want to learn. But also, it would be really cool to learn how to play something more obscure such as an Accordion or Flute. Many of the bands I listen to have unique sounds in the background, so maybe if you knew what MeWithoutYou played, maybe you could answer with one of theirs...? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks. :) moreVoting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?
I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Sorry for the really long wall of text!I know a lot of guitar chords already. Not just the like seven essenial ones but several advanced onesand power chords, what I have trouble with is single noes and barre chords. Also, recommending thins because they'll take me farther if I play it in a band doesn't really make a difference, I already both play drums and sing in a band, I wouldn't be playing any of these other instruments in a band, I'd only use them to compose the songs for the other band members. moreTop Learn To Play Guitar Lesson Links
