Open Question: Poll: Have you heard the song "Stairway to Heaven"? And the solo?
Learned it note for note, and HAVE had it in my back pocket since the summer of 1977 when my cousin originally laid it out for me in like a 3 part process; and it worked really good I think...I don't normally give guitar lessons; however, in '97, someone that caught us while making a living on the road,,approached me and asked IF, I would be interested in teaching him...22year old dude from Chicago,,,name J.T..(We are still friends to this day),, but anyway,,, I didn't think he was ready really and I was actually right; but when I got home to south lake tahoe, Ca where AM not living at this particular time; but usually DO, as it is my home, and have lived there just up from the clubs @ the Nevada/California state line...So,, after a couple of weeks,,I get a call from J.T..who thought he'd move on out to Tahoe.. Big change for him being from the south part of chicago...but he had a love of the blues..and my cousin who IS a blues man..(Lonnie Mack)..Lonnie did make a regular stop at "Legends"..(Buddy's joint), and JT saw us there,,,although, he just happend upon me, at a booth, foolin' with someone's accoustic,,,and trying to get it to take a tuning,,and stay... So, I was using "Stairway to heaven" as a "control"...and he heard me..and I CAN imitate J. Page's version And one of my own,,and have actually been doing it since high school in the mid '70's when I'd play the whole tune,,,about 12 or 13 minutes long when laid down properly,,,and sang with the right "Feel",,etc...I have actually officially taught that song to about 5 people in the last 30+ years,,,and the last one WAS J.T,,,and he paid me a total of $750.00, but I had to give him a whole new way of aproaching the instrumant,,,And "Undo" some really bad habits that he'd picked up somewhere;;So, we spent a good 3 weeks 'De-Programming" his incorrect aproach to the guitar in general,,,as it prevented him from being able to "Move on" alone..and teach himself stuff, and he couldn't grasp what changes, and how subtle, and chilly the whole mellow thing was, when it came to getting his abiltiy to play with a, or as part of, maybe is what I meant to say.. of a Unit...or team,,,and if enough "Nare-Do-Wells" showed up in the same place, then maybe even a quick "Thow-it-together band"...and I even layed out the basics or the basic Nashville picker's # system that they,,them..and I'm not ashamed to say I myself have better success with that old number way of dealing with other players..it's just a better way... You know what i'm talking about,,??? Like if we didn't know each other; but we could still just walk on each other's bandstand and earn a night's work because of the # system...?? Like,,I turn to you and simply say: this song's an Old Merle Haggard thing called "Footlights",,,(for the "Chance that you Might already know of the song..what it sounds like, or anything at all that could help...),,,so,,let's say you say "I'm not a walking, fossil steve,,and I have never heard of your ancient monk's chant......So,, we're lucky 'cause even though I don't actually read music near well enough to be of any practical use when entertaining for paychecks and percs....BUT..I can look at you and even if it's noisy and wildly busy in the club...we will be fine, even without ever having practiced together at any time in the past..I'll say,,,"Merle's Footlights"..in "D",,, go 1, 4, 5, with a 7th,,,get "Out of the way" for a lead break that my Telecaster Master over there's going to ease into from HIS que, that's coming from Bob,,"Grizzly" Smith,,,my Pedal Steel Guitar genious...(Watch out though; as this only applies with Bob, during actual sets throughout the night, and the genious thing will go away later,,,and the opposite effect replaces the other...Anyway,,,after the Guitar's lead break,,there's one verse, and one more run at the chorus..however?? just as Steve wraps his solo,,we're going to modulate on full step...alright with that so far??? Remember,,we started in "D"..right?? So,,You must also either be a, or become a,,singer of harmony parts,,as I'm not going to take bread out of our pockets just because one of us can't sing harmony...You'll find that to be the case in virtually every situation, where there's a club owner, and pickers, that do it as thier sole form of making a living.. So,,back to the quick rundown for the opening number of the nights 3rd set.. after the lead break, there's a full step modulation, You sing 5th part with me on the very last 2 lines of the song...And just follow, and watch my eyes,,,and within' a week or so we'll sound like we've been playing with one another for many years... Right on/??? Anyway...that's pretty much what J.T got for the "Really just sybolic" 500 bones..(I always get something out of teaching a pretty much of complete beginner what I've been toiling with since the summer of '68, when I was 7 years old,,and got my 1st electric guitar at the "Flea Market" in San Jose', CA,,, for 20 bucks,,,An old "Kay",,and an old SearsSilvertone amp..1/12,,and almost no controls, of any kind... So,,I've got "some" experience under my belt that does tend to make things easier not for me only,, but everbody leans on me from time to time, and It 'doesn't bother me man.. Who do I think I am anyway??? You know what I'm sayin'.. we're all in it to sound FANTASTIC, and for the drunks, and customers,,,to drink more,,and more,, that's what we're technically there for...it helps to remember that..And if your thinking "Oh **** that,,I don't want to deal witht that ****...here's the thing that real music player's must face sooner or later..and that's "Do you want to do this for your weekly bread,,,pay your bills, and send the kids to school, etc..??? Or,, do you want to work at K-Mart,,and meet us on Friday & Saturday ONLY??? Well,, then sorry dude; gotta let you go on your way..because we've chosen to do this for more money than Sears can pay us for selling new tires,,or working at some "Jive-Turkey" music store,,pedaling stripedaling strings and giving away picks to Johnny the Trombone student that hangs out at the store, pounding on one of the Drum Kits until we all want to choke the little turd,,and his trombone... I choose to show up for 4, maybe 5 sets a night,,,4,,maybe 5 nights a week.. Scale's usually around $500.00 a week these days; although I make Much Much, more when we hit the road,,,,that's a whole nuther trip,,,Are you through with this email now??? Steve with the Stairway to Heaven Licks, & tricks... elcamaro72@hotmail.com Bear in mind man; I wasn't able to read your whole email...and took you to be pretty much a novice learner young player..No offense...I came back and used the "Edit" thing on here to help me explain why this letter is so ,well,,the way it is...I was worried that you wouldn't follow my "Jive talkin',,which I tend to do..(I still call pickers "Cats" sometimes... I know I am a dinosaur, and that I'm one for the road... but,,that's show biz,,,Right?? One thing..zzzwhy I"mOne thing..zzzwhy I"m back here...I have been laying that Stairway lick..well, all the licks,,of all the different parts of the song as it winds it's way all the way to "And she's buying a Stairway.......to...hea.....vennnnnn/// ziiiiiiiiiipzaaaaaaaaaaptidahdahdaydadad… whatever..I'm kind of "Bozo'd" tonight man... but; my 1st reaction when I read your whole email was "NO, NO,,it's NOT that hard man,,, however..even in your email,,you remind me that '1977 was a little over 30 years ago,,,,and once the "Cat was out of the bag"...that I knew that particular tune, the WAY I did,, well, you can imagine what happens next... before you know it the same clown is standing on a cocktail table howling "FREEBIRD" over and over; and I usually give in to that request as well. As it took Almost as long to learn the proper way to deliver that beautiful song without wrecking it... "Less is more" if you can dig what I'm shoveling on that line of thought..?? It's always been about the quality for me..and my family..of which almost all play for thier bread. And have as long as my memory's started forming...so,,,"FreeBird" was a "Must Learn" for me back then too.. BUT,,I have some how lost my "Feel",,and I can't get a decent "Freebird" out of the old wooden box without a month or so to "Woodshed" ...all of them for that matter... I'm zipped man... email me IF perhaps you want to discuss any other musical interests's ,,as I have a few of my own lately and not a soul that has the foggiest idea what I'm "Lippin'" about.. Later man! Halsey... moreOpen Question: What should I choose to do as my personal project for IB MYP?
I am currently a freshman and I am in the IB program, currently in MYP, and I have to choose my idea for my personal project. I am very into photgraphy and also video. I dance and I take part in theatre I really wanted to do something that would help others and at the same time be interesting to me. I came up with some ideas: *Learn to play the guitar or piano, then play at an ederly home. *Gather a group of kids and teach them to tie dye shirts where they make one for themselves and one for a homeless person at a shelter who does not have as much clothes as we do.And photgraph the entire thing. *Same idea but instead have kids with a disease or condition make the shirts and the second shirts they make are auctioned off to raise money for their disease or condition. *Travel somewhere and take pictures and create a travel guide. *Same Idea but create a video travel guide. -I know it's lenghty but please give me your feedback, also if you have other ideas. I know people make things or build things and donate them. Things like that. Your feedback is GREATLY appreciated. moreVoting Question: Is a good idea to learn how to read music sheet if I have the possibility?
Look, I am 16 years old, a guitarist and I play for like a year (I really started seriously for a few months). I have a live guitar teacher. I study with him for like 2 months, this month is the 3rd. I asked him about music sheet, what is it, because I saw a portative in Guitar Pro program, and then he said "OK, I'll teach you how to read it if you want". He said many students he had were running away in fear when they heard about reading music and theory stuff. Do you think is a good idea to learn how to read it? It will help me a lot in the future? What if I decide to go to a music school? moreResolved Question: Time with spouse vs. time alone--what is fair?
My wife and I are in our late 20's. We have been married for 2.5 years. We have been through many arguments, but we have also had many wonderful moments--which I gather is normal. We moved to a new place for my job, so we don't know very many people here. My wife works 15 hours a week to help support our finances a little bit, but for the most part, she's at home. She is diligent, does all the chores, bills, cooks, and cleans. Since it's just the two of us, it's not much--but I still appreciate it. She manages to find time to read online articles, keep in touch with friends and family. She is telling me about a wonderful book she is reading right now; she goes shopping for gifts, does arts and crafts such as scrapbooking, finds ways to decorate our place, etc (while I'm at work). I appreciate the things she does, but in a way, I am envious. I don't remember the last time I was able to read a book. I have voiced to her interest in learning new hobbies. I am particularly interested in learning guitar, writing short stories, learning how to program flash games, martial arts. She tells me she supports me, but whenever I tell her I need alone time in these endeavors, she becomes defensive--claiming that I don't want to spend time with her, or that I long to be single again. We spend entire weekends together. I promised her, happily, when we married, I would take her out on a date every Saturday--or if we don't go out, we'd spend time together in some form. I continue to keep my word. She suggested a new tradition on Sundays--we cook breakfast together. She likes to sleep in on weekends, but I, being a morning person, wake up early. So I try to do 'me things' in the morning when I'm not too exhausted, but she expects me to spend time with her when she wakes up till she sleeps (which means staying up late--being awake for nearly 24 hours on some occasions, or getting 3-4 hours of sleep before waking up for work the next day). I try so hard and I really do enjoy spending time with her, but after doing weekly chores and getting ready for the next week, the weekend is over. I want to find activities that challenge me mentally, push my physical limits, or tap into my creative / artistic mindset. If I push the issue enough, it always becomes an argument--I then get my time to do things alone, but it's hard to do creative writing right after fighting with my wife. It's hard to play guitar when my wife, in mockery, is bitterly and blatantly ignoring me for my 1-2 hours. I suppose the conflict could push me to run an extra mile (jk). I have told her on many occasions that when we spend time together, I have always shown a good attitude about what she enjoys, but she always abhors what I enjoy when it doesn't pertain to her likes. For example, I have watched all seasons of Sex and the City with her (every episode, including the movie). I have asked her to purchase an adventure video game that we can both take turns playing, unfolding a story interactively--she declines, saying she doesn't enjoy video games. For me, I didn't watch TV, by choice, for an entire decade. When discussing time together and time apart, what standards are fair, generally speaking? What have you and your spouse done that worked well for you? What have you done that backfired or did not work well? Is there a good book about this aspect of marriage? moreResolved Question: What is the best guitar for a beginner?
I am really interested in learning to play the guitar! I was wondering what good beginner acoustic guitars were available and the best brands to get for your money? Also, for someone who has never had any experience playing a guitar, whats the best route to go about taking lessons. I was planning on doing lessons for the first few months to learn the basics, then moving on to using books and programs to teach myself. What do you guys think would be the best approach for a beginner wanting to learn to play? moreVoting Question: Where can I learn to read music sheet?
Alright, I don't know if it is exactly called like that, but I play guitar and when I open the Guitar Pro program, there appear 2 rows. On the lower row is the tabulature, which are indicated the frets, and on the first row are the notes. You know, the black points, with a tail in the upside on the portative. There are also some "#" and "b". I know they are called sharps and flats. However, how can I learn to really read them, and when I see a portative to read it fluently. All of those notes, I want to know how to read them. On some songs there are many symbols that I really don't know what they are. moreResolved Question: I am so confused about life?

I am 16 years old and still in highschool if that has anything to do with it is it too late to pick up another istrument? Thx guys moreResolved Question: What would I need to do to learn to play the Ukulele?
I started out as just some guy who liked to write music and could sing pretty well. Now I sing three nights a week at a local coffee shop and I have booked a few solo gigs on the town. My buddies sister plays guitar for me right now but she is admittedly a horrible teacher. I haven’t played an instrument since the sax in high school and I really want to learn to play the Ukulele. Anyone have any suggestions? Computer programs, books or anything. I don’t know if there is a significant difference between a guitar and a ukulele. I tried some of the local music schools but none specifically focus on Uku's. I love the sound and the type of atmosphere they create and they could compliment the songs I sing. Any help would be most appreciated! moreVoting Question: What can I do to learn to play the Ukulele?

I had an interesting day as a musician and I have some questions. I have been playing guitar for six years and I play in a rock program whre you form bands and play live shows as well as have lessons. Last month I joined jazz band at school and today I played at this jazz festival with a bunch of other schools. I noticed I got really nervous on stage in front of a judge and didnt follow the music that well. At the time of my solo, I was so scared that i just played random notes of the mixolydian and the minor pentatonic. We were playing a standard 1-4-5 blues to solo over by the way. Anyways it sounded really not professional and I know I havent been playing jazz for a long time but i need to get there. This is my first year of high school and i was playibg next to juniors that were swinging the groove and playing jazzy solos with jazzy scales. I am so used to being considered a good rock player, but now i feel i am in another league with better players. So my question is what shbould i do to improve. Should I learn songs out of the Real Book. How can I practice improv, also how do i improve my rhythm playing. I have a big passion for guitar and I want to get better. Thanks moreResolved Question: what is a good dj program?

I wanted to try and learn how to play bass guitar but I can only see piano and guitar. Is there a way to learn how to play the bass using this program or am I just wasting my time? moreVoting Question: too many AP classes? advice please!!?
okay i guess i should start off by saying that schedulings starting pretty soon and im not quite sure what to take for junior year. i thought i did, but then everyone started freaking out when they saw that there would be 6 AP's in my schedule. the classes i was planning on taking are AP English (Language and Composition) AP Psychology AP Computer Science French IV AP Calc BC AP Chemistry AP Physics Some more background info I guess would be that I'm going to be a junior next year. Currently, I'm an active member of the school's environmental club and the key club, play guitar, and I love to volunteer (although i have no hours that count yet. i have no clue how to get those.....) People at school see me as smart but in that "smart group", I'm probably somewhere in the middle to bottom. I also was planning on doing all this to save money on classes, they seem interesting, and because theyre just the next classes to take at my school (ap comp sci is after computer programming, ap chem after honors chem, ap phys after honors phys, etc). Now that my friends brought it up though, I'm getting somewhat worried that I'm basically getting ready to sacrifice my gpa or time. I'm also worried, however, that I might regret not taking one of these courses because they seem to go so in-depth and it's really interesting. For example, I HATED and was HORRIBLE at history or social studies before sophomore year. I'm taking APUSH now though and I surprised myself by finding it really interesting and I'm really glad I decided to take the class. I was worried at first that I would do just as bad as I did in 8th grade (where we also learned U.S. history) especially now that they'd tell you more information, but it's a lot of fun. I also thought that one way to lesson the pain of the AP's would be to start learning some of the material of at least 1 or 2 of the classes over summer. That way, I would know or get the gist of the material while learning it and it'd take off some of the stress overall. Now then. After reading all this (thank you for enduring through this by the way ^-^), what do you think? Should I go ahead and take all of these courses, or should I lay off on a few courses? Should I replace some of these courses with easier AP courses perhaps? What classes would you recommend? Should I bother trying to learn some material myself? If so, which classes should I start over the summer (self-study) and what companies/materials do you suggest for that class? (barron? kaplan? 5 steps to a 5? princeton review? etc?) any information at all would be VERY helpful as i'm super confused as to what to do ^-^' (information includes what colleges look at. one of my friends said that colleges first look at everyones gpa, throw out the ones that aren't high enough, and then look at the rigor of the class. another friend said that it's the opposite. who's right and who's wrong?) once again, I'm really sorry about the length -_-''' any helpful info would be great though and I thank everyone who answers thoughtfully ahead of time :) Thank you~!!!!! moreResolved Question: Web Application Development: Where do I start?
Help a newbie out! :) Let me start off by saying that I have ZERO background in programming. I understand markup langauges (HTML, XHTML, CSS) and I know a bit of JavaScript. I know the directly I would like to take is to learn and utilize .Net technologies for web application development. My question is... where do I start? While I know schooling is the most formal route to take (and I do intend on eventually completing a MS in Computer Science) I will have to stick with individual learning / workshops or individual classes for the time due to financial restraints. I don't want to learn just the languages. I know that if I learn only the languages, I won't fully understand the development aspect. Sure, I'll know what elements, functions and variables are and how to manipulate them effectively (I guess), but I won't know the theory of programming. I liken it to music somewhat. I can learn to play the guitar and piano well, but just because I can read sheet music and translate it into music does not mean that I understand music theory or know how to write decent songs from scratch. SO... MY QUESTION IS: What are some great resources available for those of us teaching ourselves programming techniques/languages and not attending formal schooling? Is there a MUST HAVE book on programming algorithms that would provide decent insight and get me started on the right track? Any other advice from experienced programmers that would be useful? :) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!Excuse any spelling errors. I am an idiot and did not proofread prior to posting. moreResolved Question: I am planning on majoring in Electrical Engineering, what colleges could I get into?
And I am currently living in Portland Oregon. I scored a 29 composite on the ACT's, I do not remember my SAT score, but it was close to 2000. I maintained a 3.18gpa throughout high school. I took 4 trimesters of foreign language, and the last math class I ended up taking was advanced discrete mathematics. I have no extracurriculars through school - I spent most of my time playing music and learning instruments (piano, guitar, bass, harmonica, mandolin and saxophone). I have never taken one lesson, yet I am very solid on theory. I also spent quite a bit of my time working with classic cars and restoring them, engine and chassis wise. I am capable of rebuilding engines and doing basic welding. As far as activities related to the field... I spent months learning about electrical components on my own, and started making my own guitar pedals. I started etching my own PCB's, drilling them and soldering them together... That progressed into buying vintage pedals that were broken and selling them at profit, which eventually progressed into buying broken amplifiers and fixing them for a profit. I also know quite a bit about computers, and know how the majority of the components work. I used to be able to use Basic and Cocoa fairly well. I haven't messed with either for awhile, but I am confident I'd be able to get back in pace quickly. What are some "decent" colleges that offer excellent electrical engineering programs that I could get into? As of now, I am looking into Oregon State, Calpoly, and Washington State, among others... I realize my GPA might be a bit of a hindrance, however, it really doesn't reflect my actual abilities. The last time I asked this question I was told I was going to fail, based primarily on my GPA and SAT scores. I believe I am more than capable of doing whatever is thrown at me if I put mind to it. I am absolutely positive that Electrical Engineering is the field I would like to go into, I am very interested in this kind of thing. Please do not recommend I go into a different field. What I meant in saying I can do anything that is thrown at me is that I actually enjoy learning about this. I think it is amazing how electricity and computers work. If there is something I don't understand, I will enjoy tutoring to figure it out while others will be pulling their hair out. I even enjoy math. moreResolved Question: I am planning on majoring in electrical engineering, maybe double majoring computer sciences...?
And I am currently living in Portland Oregon. I scored a 29 composite on the ACT's, I do not remember my SAT score, but it was close to 2000. I maintained a 3.18gpa throughout high school. I took 4 trimesters of foreign language, and the last math class I ended up taking was advanced discrete mathematics. I have no extracurriculars through school - I spent most of my time playing music and learning instruments (piano, guitar, bass, harmonica, mandolin and clarinet). I also spent quite a bit of my time working with classic cars and restoring them. As far as activities related to the field... I spent months learning about electrical components on my own, and started making my own guitar pedals. Etching my own PCB's, soldering them together... That progressed into buying vintage pedals that were broken and selling them at profit, which eventually progressed into buying broken amplifiers and fixing them for a profit. I also know quite a bit about computers, DOS, Basic and Cocoa... What are some "decent" colleges that offer excellent electrical engineering programs that I could get into? I may end up going for a double major of computer sciences and electrical engineering. As of now, I am looking at Oregon State, Calpoly, and Washington State...To be honest, I just sort of drifted along in High School hence my GPA. I also skipped two grades, but went back down a year later because I did not want to go on without my friends from prior years... I am perfectly capable of doing whatever is thrown at me. Like I said, I managed to squeeze Advanced Calculus and Advanced Discrete Math, two trimesters of each in one year of school with no difficulty. moreVoting Question: I am planning on majoring in electrical engineering...?

I want a macbook really badly but my parents wont allow me to get one. I asked my dad a few weeks ago but all he said was 'no'. I already have a sony laptop but it is pretty heavy to carry around and it is quite slow. My mom will probably be working from home soon and i will be willing to give my sony laptop to her. I also saw that there is a program where i can learn the guitar. I love music so if i get the macbook i will learn how to play songs on the guitar. The macbook is quite expensive and i am not a college student or have someone to be able to use the educational discount to get it for a little bit cheaper. I really don't know what I want to major in but it's probably going to be something liberal artsy-ish, if you know what I mean (History, journalism, psychology, political science, international relations). But then part of me really wants to continue with music. I've played piano since I was four years old and also can play violin and viola; I'm currently teaching myself how to play guitar and also want to learn to sing. So I really want to have some sort of a music degree from wherever I go to college. So my question is, what universities have great liberal arts programs and music programs? I'm currently interested in Wisconsin (Madison), UC Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, NYU, Oregon, Brown (super reach school), Tulane, etc. What universities, that are kind of similar to those, would you suggest for someone who wants to get a liberal arts degree but also a music one to fall back on. I'm not terribly interested in very small schools, by the way. Thanks! moreResolved Question: Help picking a college major?
I really need some help picking the right college major for me; whenever I ask our college counselors, they seem to direct you to what’s going to make you the most money- regardless if you are interested or not. I know I’m throwing myself to the bowels of the internet, but here it goes: I’m not sure what exactly I wish to do. All I’ve known is that I wish to be an entrepreneur of sorts- however, college isn’t necessary for that, so I didn’t want to choose the generic Business major (no offense to those who did). I excelled in high school whenever I tried (or whenever I wasn’t lazy), particularly in English and History. I’m interested in Computers and Technology, but I’m shying away from some of the math/science-heavy degree plans. It’s not that I’m bad at math; whenever I actually did my homework or studied, I made As and Bs, and whenever I fucked around I got C+ or Fs (or Ds depending on where you live). It’s that I don’t find math “fun” or “interesting”, like I see so many others do. While I can tolerate mathematics and sciences, I question whether or not I will enjoy a career in this field. Not only that, but when it comes to programming one doesn’t need to go to school to learn that craft- there’s a dozens of books in which you can teach yourself at your own pace. Most job openings even say “Bachelor in Computer Science or related knowledge.” I’ve been tooling around with programs like Photoshop and Paint.net for years, with designs and image altering for various people. I also used to make little “Sprites” and games using the “RPG Maker” engine when I was 10. I’m not a pro at it, but its something that I enjoyed doing whenever I had the vision. The downside is that my “skill” is purely digital, and that I suck ass at drawing (that can be changed with practice, though,so that's not an argument). I do enjoy playing video games, and I have for years; however, the same issues I have with this major is the same as I do with the previous major. I love music. Plain and simple. I wish to take music theory classes and learn how to play the piano and the guitar to better my skills. I have aural abilities and I can sing. Whenever the motivation, I like to write. I’ve been free writing since I was a kid, and I have mounds of fiction short stories to various amounts of poems. I developed the interest of film and screenwriting when I was a kid, so I’ve always had an interest in the arts and in entertainment since a kid. Of course, the downside to that is the lack of careers choices that come with Music majors and English majors. I have no desire to teach whatsoever, and I have no long history of playing any instrument- so anything musical would be for my own benefit. I’d hate to go major in English then say 5 years later “I can’t find a good job in this field.” And with film comes the dozens of people who pursue their dreams and come back with absolutely nothing. I don’t care about “fame”, but I’d rather not be assed out, you know? As you can see, I have a multitude of ideas with little to no idea how to put these plans in action. Ultimately, I want to go to school to learn something I normally couldn’t on my own that would give me an edge, but I don’t want to major in something that’ll be a complete waste of time, nor just do something for the money. I mean, if I get the money, that’s all great too… Anyway, I know I’m throwing myself to the sharks here, but: What do you think I should major in? Inb4 any memes. Also, don’t give me that “do what you love to do” crap. I’m not asking you this question for a generic answer that I can get from the nearest homeless man. And if there is a way to somehow combine all of these, let me know! moreResolved Question: I have no commitment skills whatsoever=/?

any tips would be appreciated! ------------- Konichiwa! Hello! My name is April, I am a seventeen year old American student and I can't wait to become a new member of your family! I want to go to Japan for every reason possible. From relations to religions, sight-seeing to cuisine, every aspect of Japan I want to soak in. I went to Japan two years ago for two short weeks with my church. We spent most our time helping out a church in Narita so we didn’t get to tour around or get into the culture much. I loved it there but I left with an unsatisfied hunger for more. I feel like I have so much more to learn in Japan, it captivated me right away and I would do anything to be there again. To live with your family would mean I get to experience what life is really like there, a dream of mine. I don't think I could be happier in another place! I am looking forward to meeting a lot of new people over there, but mostly my host family! I can get along with all different types of family members, and I think my half Korean upbringing will help me here since Japanese and Korean mannerisms are quite similar. I am an animal lover so pets are more than fine with me. I have a white rabbit named Cosmo and two cats named Tango and Iglo. I live at home with my four family members. My father is an electrician who loves tennis and golf a little too much. My mother works at a nail salon but nails are not the only thing she paints. She is also an artist and paints canvases occasionally. My two younger sisters are eight and thirteen years old. Both are interested in gymnastics and are very outgoing kids. We have an interesting family dynamic and have a lot of fun together. My friends and family describe me as optimistic, creative, open minded, outgoing, and relatable. I am always up for a good challenge or adventure and like to spend my time in all different types of hobbies. My interests are mainly around the arts, probably because of my mother. I love photography and film-making and might major in those subjects in college. I also like to write poetry and spoken word. I am on the drama team at my church where we create and perform dramas monthly. Music is also close to me, I have been playing the guitar for four years and the drums for two years now. I like to make and mix music tracks on my computer and used to intern at a recording studio. Being athletic is important in my family as well because of my father who loves sports. I have been playing tennis and soccer for over ten years but decided to concentrate more on my tennis skills. I am the captain of the tennis team at school and also run distance on the track team. This past year I have taken a strong interest in government and politics. I am on model UN, ironically, as a delegate of Japan. I am the class president at school and am active in the student government. International relations may also be a potential major for me. I love meeting people and going places, which is why I was so excited to learn about this program. I hope to hear from you soon! I've done a great deal of Extraciriculars in high school and in college now (i've just finished my first semester of college) my gpa (hasn't been calculated yet but) will be from 3.4-3.6 deffffinetly i took relatively difficult classes (gen chem, calculus, psychology, english-not elementary english i wrote alot of shit in this class lol, and a bible class because i go to a christian school...imtransfering cuz im not christian and it was temporary anyways) this semester and 17 hours i've done TONNNS of extra ciriculars and was even invited to the Dean's students review committee by the Dean herself. So i think im preeetty invovled. I also was involved with an initiative to register eligible immigrant voters as well during the McCain and Obama election. we surpassed our goal of 1500 and reached nearly 1800 and i was awarded for my efforts and contributions through recognition during a organizational, state wide, convention as well as a honorary plaque thing. I also have self taught myself harmonica piano and guitar(im best at guitar, pretty damn good lol actually). Im tutoring other students at my school in chemistry and teaching some students guitar lately. I also volunteered with Kilowatt ours organization that is a organization based upon educating the people about saving energy etc. I also worked with a teen outreach program in which i volunteered with other teens in high school and went with them to elementary schools to teach elementary students about various cultures. I also participated every year in the international day I had at my school. I also converted my country's national anthem (im not american and jimi hendrix already did that) into guitar and played the whole thing twice for my school dressed in traditional clothing it was AWSOME. I also did model United Nations it wass grreeaaat, great professional and sophisticateed feel to it. I also completed the IB diploma program, taking all college level courses in high school, and writing 4000 essays its was intense. I also played varsity tennis and football(quit because i got hurt, muscle injury around tail bone it was nasty) tennis i still play. I also participated in a TIRRC convention where i along with other volunteers hosted a program for other volunteers so they could learn how to better expose racism and discrimination and deal with it, it was a workshop. I think i made the Deans list as well at my university this semester so thats a plus. i also speak urdu and hindi and i've worked as a translator in a clinic before which was cool cuz im a biochem major doing pre-med. the bad: i was stupid during sophmore year of high school so i screwed it up and got a low gpa~~ arnd like 2.7 I also took the ACT around that stupid time and got a 26...but that was HS im doing awsome in college. so guuys PLEASE LET ME KNOW what you think abotu my chances and IF ANYONE KNOWS TELL ME THE VANDY TRANSFER ACCEPTANCE RATE THANKS A MILLION!! moreResolved Question: What game can teach me to play rock guitar for real?

Dear Host Family, My name is Hailey Hall, and I live in the state of Florida. I am currently a sophomore at my local high school, and I just turned sixteen this past October. I am so excited to get to meet you! I would like to thank you in advance for picking me as a temporary "daughter". I am sure that I will learn so much from you during the year that I will be living with you. I have been living for the past five years in a rural area just outside of Jacksonville Florida. I live on eight acres, and care for five horses, three dogs, and three cats. As for my human family, I live with both my parents and two little sisters whom I love very much. Alyson is twelve, and Sydney is seven. My grandmother, who I call Grammy, also lives with us in the extra apartment. We play rummy and talk about politics. My Grammy has a friend, Krista, who comes over every Sunday. She is from Germany originally. I love to talk to her about her native country and listen to her speak. Krista is the reason that I became interested in Germany. She entranced me with tales of her many years in Germany. She spoke of childhood experiences during World War II, and breathtaking scenery no matter where in the country you are. After a bit of digging around to locate my family tree, Krista and I discovered my German heritage. Just two generations ago my ancestors were living in Germany, until my great great Grandmother immigrated to America. After this discovery, I suddenly felt a longing to become better acquainted with the country of my ancestors. I am a very independent person, and I actually enjoy doing things on my own usually. I am not an incessant talker, but I love a stimulating conversation. I especially love reading and discussing important global topics, which I know isn't really a normal teen-age thing to do, but I enjoy it never the less. I do not belong to a practicing religion, although my parents do, but I respect each and every religion whole heartedly. I recently became a vegetarian for the usual reasons, and I would love to be able to stick with my decision, but I would understand if this would not be a feasible task. I think that eating a little meat for a year is worth a year abroad! My favorite kind of food is Italian, like eggplant parmesan and other pastas. I especially like fruits and vegetables, my favorites being strawberries and apples. Horses are a huge part of my life. I am a student of Parelli Natural Horsemanship, a horse training program that is all about the relationship between the human and the horse. I am in the midst of completing the third level with my two Arabian horses, Sweet Briar and Blaze. My newest horse, Blaze, was given to me by his misunderstanding owners when he became “aggressive” and unmanageable. He is neither of these, as a little bit of love and better communication soon proved. That is what we do at our farm. We take in un-wanted and misunderstood horses and with love, language, and leadership, give them another chance. I train and ride my horses almost every day, and my mother and I participate in educational clinics and perform at expos. Along with horses, I love to play my guitar. I believe that playing an instrument is a fabulous stress reliever. I have not ever had formal guitar lessons, but instead have taught myself with a little help from my father. The only thing is I am incredibly nervous about playing in front of people; even my family. Another thing that I enjoy and spend a good bit of time doing is reading. I absolutely adore the time spent nestled up with a truly engrossing book. My favorite book right now is "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer. I read just about anything though, even non-fiction. It was actually a book that got me interested in a foreign exchange. I hope that I have given you an idea of who I am and why I chose to be here. Once again I would like to thank you for being so generous as to open up your home and share your culture with me. Sincerely, Hailey Rae Hall moreResolved Question: Does playing children's card games make you a nerd? (Also, am I a nerd)?
Just curious, because for some reason, I've always tried to avoid the label. I'm moderately attractive, not that that has anything to do with it. For a time, I did play Magic: the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon, (of course, I only played Pokemon until 5th grade, I played Yu-Gi-Oh until 8th grade because I decided high school was coming, and it was nerdy to like it.) I played Magic for about six months just because I wanted to beat the crap out of everybody in my dorm (I stopped playing as soon as I was able to wipe the floor with them.) Before you judge, maybe first I should tell you WHY I started playing these immature card games. I've always loved competition. When somebody's good at something, a lot of the time, I'll focus nonstop on beating them. I'm happy when I'm on top, and I'm a pretty quick learner. It's not just card games, either. I'd gladly spend hours practicing tennis or working out if it meant that I'd master something and wipe the floor with the competition. It was the same in newspaper, and in French class. Right now, I'm learning how to program and am learning guitar. I think knowing how to program something could be a handy skill later on, and I might move right up to lock-picking and robbing banks. Those could both be very useful too. No, I don't have a girlfriend. I'm 19. I've never really had a successful relationship. I think it's because I go after the girls who would rather flirt than have a serious relationship. I'm not socially inept or anything, but I do think I could get out more, (which I would if I had a car.) So: now, for the million-dollar question. Does playing card games make you a nerd if you only play card games to beat other people who play card games? Also, why do I care? I couldn't tell you why I care... it was 7:00 in the morning, I hadn't gotten any sleep, and I was curious. OH, and bonus question: if I were a nerd- hypothetically, of course- would it make me somehow less desirable? I've always thought my trouble with relationships was caused by my over-complicating them, not my undesirability or possible social ineptitude. moreVoting Question: What are my chances for the UCs based on this information?

Any recommendations for good theory software and guitar teaching software? moreVoting Question: I want to sing and play guitarr? helppppp!?
ive heard that people dont just get a voice from being born, they have to sing all the time and there voice just grows and grows over time.. and obviously playing guitar you learn... i wish my parents got my singing and playing instruments wen i was really younger... im 14 now... do you think if i start taking acoustic guitar lessons now and get a vocal couch and all that do you i will get better, or do you just have to start from a really young age, like most of the actors in disney channel and nickelodeon starting singing and all that wen they were younger in like pubsss, or went on little programs and now they are all really big stars?? so what im saying is do you think it is too late to start singing and learing guitar, pleassee help. i really reeeeaaallly want to have a record label one day, moreResolved Question: Can someone look at my CV?
Hi all users, I'm an 18 year old male and I can't get a job anywhere, I must have applied for over 25 places since the beginning of summer and have only heard back from 3. This has obviously rocked my confidence and I cannot understand what I am doing wrong. I was hoping for someone to look at my CV and alter it so I can improve it. I'm still at school and this is my final year. I think this maybe affecting my chances to get a job but I do not know. I've an interview next Friday at a golf centre, however, I know almost nothing about golf. Should I cancel the interview? Or what should I do? I'm a friendly enough and outgoing guy, and I think my interview techniques are sound but perhaps not, any suggestions would be appreciated.
