Voting Question: What is the best way to learn guitar scales?
I learned the E pentatonic minor scale, but I have trouble soloing in other keys and moving the pattern up and down the fretboard. Is it worth learning the major scale and how to form scales with music theory? Do you guitar players learn scales based on notes or patterns? And does anyone have any advice on how I can better teach myself to solo in different keys? (It's kind of lame to keep asking people to play rhythm parts in E all the time) moreResolved Question: Acoustic finger-picking songs?
I'm learning how to play finger-picking style on guitar and I need to some songs to help me. I'm just beginning but I can play: Stairway to Heaven (intro and other parts) Nothing Else Matters Dust in the Wind Simple Man(not fingerpicking but still a cool acoustic song) Wildwood Flower I'm looking for classic songs like the ones above, not new crap with some dude singing over it.. ie Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, girly stuff, etc. So based on those songs could you recommend me some new ones?how do i develop my style if i don't know anything besides a few songs? i've always thought you develop your own style by learning other stuff and taking things from it i can't just develop my own style out of the blue, i need other songs to help and guide me moreResolved Question: What are good "how to play guitar" youtube videos?

And I am currently living in Portland Oregon. I scored a 29 composite on the ACT's, I do not remember my SAT score, but it was close to 2000. I maintained a 3.18gpa throughout high school. I took 4 trimesters of foreign language, and the last math class I ended up taking was advanced discrete mathematics. I have no extracurriculars through school - I spent most of my time playing music and learning instruments (piano, guitar, bass, harmonica, mandolin and saxophone). I have never taken one lesson, yet I am very solid on theory. I also spent quite a bit of my time working with classic cars and restoring them, engine and chassis wise. I am capable of rebuilding engines and doing basic welding. As far as activities related to the field... I spent months learning about electrical components on my own, and started making my own guitar pedals. I started etching my own PCB's, drilling them and soldering them together... That progressed into buying vintage pedals that were broken and selling them at profit, which eventually progressed into buying broken amplifiers and fixing them for a profit. I also know quite a bit about computers, and know how the majority of the components work. I used to be able to use Basic and Cocoa fairly well. I haven't messed with either for awhile, but I am confident I'd be able to get back in pace quickly. What are some "decent" colleges that offer excellent electrical engineering programs that I could get into? As of now, I am looking into Oregon State, Calpoly, and Washington State, among others... I realize my GPA might be a bit of a hindrance, however, it really doesn't reflect my actual abilities. The last time I asked this question I was told I was going to fail, based primarily on my GPA and SAT scores. I believe I am more than capable of doing whatever is thrown at me if I put mind to it. I am absolutely positive that Electrical Engineering is the field I would like to go into, I am very interested in this kind of thing. Please do not recommend I go into a different field. What I meant in saying I can do anything that is thrown at me is that I actually enjoy learning about this. I think it is amazing how electricity and computers work. If there is something I don't understand, I will enjoy tutoring to figure it out while others will be pulling their hair out. I even enjoy math. moreResolved Question: What is the best Journey song to learn on guitar?
Looking for a good, chord based, journey song to learn? Sadly I suck at playing tabs but chords I can do, somewhat. I play an acoustic if that matters. So if you could help or just narrow down my choices it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks moreResolved Question: Ladies, am I a datable person?
I'm 19 in first year's college, and I have never in my life dated, or even hung out with a girl before. I always feel like I'm not good enough, and scary. I say scary because I'm kind of buff, and I have scared the **** out of a few girls without me doing anything. For example, once a girl came to ask me a question about our homework. She then said to me, "your eyes make you look like the devil. I don't want to talk to you anymore." I thought to myself, wff? What did I do? I was just looking at her. Also, I was on the bus once, walking to the back. A girl was sitting with her boyfriend having a convo. The whole time I was walking to get to the seat in front of her, she was giving me this dirty look. I didn't stare at her because I'm a little shy, but I glanced here and there, and that's how I noticed she was giving me that dirty look. When I was at my seat, I glanced at her and stared, and she literally opened her eyes really wide, and jumped a bit like she was about to have a heart attack. Her face then turned red, and she looked away. I know I'm not cute, but people have told me that I'm very handsome. I really don't see it, and sorry I don't exactly want to post a picture of myself. I'm 5 foot 7, buff, and presumably "handsome." I also play the electric guitar, and am working on becoming a film editor/director as I am in a 4 years bachelor of arts university degree. I make many short films. Every single one of my friends say I'm like the funniest guy on the face of the earth. They also say I'm very honest, polite, a little too generous, very truthful (I stick to my promises) and very fun to hang out with. I also enjoy having conversations about ANYTHING. All my friends seem to come to me first with their problems because they say I'm very helpful, and knowledgeable about solving problems. 5 of my friends even called me this winter break to say that they miss me. One of them went as far as saying that they love me, even though I only knew him for 4 months (he's not gay, he has a girl. Buddy love lol :D) If all this is true, then why can't I get myself a girlfriend? Am I scary (based on my 5 foot 7, and buff description)? Is what I'm doing worth a girl's time? I'm 19, and I feel pathetic even asking these questions on this site. What's wrong with me? I forgot to mention that because of the way I was raised, I have never said the words "I love you" to anyone, including my own parents. Also, I have never hugged anyone in my life. I really want to learn how to, and I was hoping a special girl can show me how. Is that a turn off? moreResolved Question: Ladies, would you date someone like me?

I want to learn how to play the bass guitar. Problem is, i'm 15 so I dont really have a steady source of income, just the money I've saved up from birthdays/christmas. What is a good base guitar to buy that costs less than $120? moreResolved Question: I may just be doubting myself, is it impressive for a freshman in high school to play Maynard Ferguson songs?
I am a freshman Trumpet player who's life is based around jazz. My cousin is also a trumpet player(2 grades higher) who had me listen to this artist Maynard Ferguson. When i heard it i knew i needed to play it. That particular song was Birdland(i know every arrangement and can play it on guitar, keyboard, and of course trumpet). But now 2 years later i have played two of his songs in jazz band. But recently was given a whole book of some of his music. Some of which are my favorites(Chameleon,Maria, Gospel John, La fiesta, Mister mellow and more). My range is an E flat/ F above the staff(same as my cousin who is a junior in high school). I can play those songs but some notes exceed my range at the moment. At times while im playing, i feel like im not good enough for most jazz bands. I feel i make to any beginner mistakes. i was told by a near by band teacher i have an excellent tone, but i'm still not sure i'm good. My biggest fear is being a complete failure in the eyes of musicians around my town. A few of which actually played in Maynard Fergusons Band I have been working on learning songs by ear, such as:Hey Jude(the intro), More than a feeling, On the sunny side of the street My dream is to hopefully go proffesional or become a music teacher So? any advice. is just my self_esteem? I could record myself playing and send to any who want to hear so you could help. just email me at slamjam94@yahoo.comI know just about every song he has composed, arranged and played. I know about his origins. I know how he died. Just about everything. I am also a Herp Alpert fan also. i don't just limit my self to Maynard. But i don't fit the stereotype of a typical Tpt player, i dont worship Armstrong. I just want to know if a freshman should be able to play like this or betterI was saying i know about the songs because the Atheist dude. I have heard plenty of trumpet players, i like them all. I know plenty of artist from 1900's to now. i know that knowing them all wont make me any better. What i've been asking is, is it a good thing i can play these songs(some by ear). My whole life is based around music. in fact i have an audition at Las Vegas Academy for their Jazz studies this saturday. Thank you, you guys but are those answers to my question? moreResolved Question: is it hard to learn how to play piano(well actually its a yamaha keyboard)? read below please. Thanks! :)?
Im 14 and I dont know how to read music and my dad got me a yamaha keyboard for christmas and I was just wondering how hard it is on a 1-10 scale to learn and to be "good" at it. Like I would atleast like to know by the end of the year how to play a song like teardrops on my guitar by taylor swift or something like that by the end of the year. How long do you think it would take me to learn a song like that based on me having no music experience at all? Thanks :) any tips would be appreciated :)I think I want to be able to teach myself a little then maybe take a class during the summer.I have already learned where the a and g keys are moreResolved Question: Why am I so pathetic?

I also participated every year in the international day I had at my school. I also converted my country's national anthem (im not american and jimi hendrix already did that) into guitar and played the whole thing twice for my school dressed in traditional clothing it was AWSOME. I also did model United Nations it wass grreeaaat, great professional and sophisticateed feel to it. I also completed the IB diploma program, taking all college level courses in high school, and writing 4000 essays its was intense. Hi folks, I've been playing classical piano for some years now. I recon I 've reached and intermediate level. All though I like listening to classical music, I am rather bored with playing classical piano. I would like to sing pop/rock/broadway/jazz songs and use the piano to accompany myself based on the chords on the music sheet. Guitar players seem to learn rhytms that goes well will chords and in a matter of months they can sing and accompany multiple songs. Does anyone know any GOOD (not those "learn to play piano in 2 hours" junk) piano methods that teaches rhythms that goes well with chords and popular riffs etc.? P.S. I could not find a tutor/teacher that teach these. There are only classical piano teachers around me. moreResolved Question: Please Explain the ignorance of people towards video games?
Non-gamers can't seem to differentiate Virtual Reality and Reality. Which I find ironic. More specifically when it comes to violent games and on the flip-side music based games(more specifically Guitar Hero). For example one of the biggest arguments that constantly went on through the 90's was that violent video games beget violent people. I find this is a simplistic and foolish way to look at media(which really is just a modern extension of previous generations[violent movies in the 80's and music since the 50's as a scapegoat for violent people or violent actions]). What really amazes me is this very negative reaction to a video game such as Guitar Hero. Yes, it's not a tool for music education but it is a family video game(bar certain songs). This is where my question comes into play. Why in the hell can't these people realize that playing Guitar Hero doesn't mean you have ANY interest in learning guitar. Some will but when it comes right down to it, it is just a game and can be enjoyed as such. So why can't a vast amount of people get over that fact that a video game is just virtual reality and does not mean that the players of those games will try and imitate that virtual reality. moreResolved Question: what should i study in college/ online college?

After viewing the clips or movie, lead class in discussion about the questions of identity raised in the movie: 1. Selena's father says it is difficult to be a Mexican-American. Why does he say that? 2. Selena and her brother don't seem to be as bothered by the difficulties the father describes. Why do they not share his feelings? (This might be a good point to see if any class members do relate to the father's feelings.) 3. Selena's Spanish is seen as a potential problem for her in Mexico by her father. Has anyone else ever felt their Spanish was being judged, by anyone anywhere? Why do you think Selena was able to overcome this problem in Mexico? Why was she so popular? 4. What was easier for Selena--gaining acceptance in Chicano/Mexican/Latino/a culture or gaining acceptance in Anglo/North American culture? To what degree did she succeed in "crossing over"? 5. What accounts for Selena's huge popularity among "Tejanos," Mexican-Americans? 6. Selena's success as a singer came by singing Spanish-only Tejano music. Was this music her first love? What kind of music did she prefer as a child? How many students in the classroom have had similar experiences? 7. What reason did her father give her for learning Spanish? What was his own experience at "crossing over" into doo-wop? Who rejected him? 8. Why is Selena's father so amazed that "for you [Selena], the borders do not exist." 9. Is it true that now, more than seven years since her death, Selena really did succeed in crossing over to an English-speaking, Hollywood pop audience? Do you think she would have become as big a star in pop music as she was in Tejano music? Why or why not? 10. If possible, play the song "Technocumbia" from Selena's Greatest Hits (and also Amor Prohibido). In one of her last hit songs, Selena mixes hiphop, reggae, a brief heavy-metal lick, and Spanish. How does this mixture work within the authentic definition (sound) of Tejano music? s this the start of something new in U.S. pop music? What do you think she represents musically? 11. Also consider, Selena's husband and guitar player, Chris. Chris was a heavy metal/rock musician. Why did he agree to play in Selena's band? In what sense is the heavy metal culture Mexican-American, Chicano, Anglo? Are there aspects of culture in the U.S. which transcend these kinds of boundaries? 12. In what ways was Selena "American"? How can her Tejana/Chicana aspects also be considered "American"? From a Mexican viewpoint, what aspects of Selena's life & career are "Mexican," which are not? 13. Based on her musical and family background, how can we envision the identity construction of Selena: Norteña, Chicana, Latina, Americana, Tejana, others? 14. Are those of us in this room more like Selena in that we belong to many different cultural groups without being defined by one of them, or do we see ourselves as definitely within one or a limited range of cultural groups?First Of All Miss 6 Or Whatever. At my disposal I have a guitar (electric), violin, and piano. I do not possess the schedule (I'm usually active during the later hours) or funds to acquire a teacher. My question is not which of these instruments is the "most fun" or "most rewarding" to play, as I'm sure different people would have different things to say. My question is which of these is more efficient to learn through self-teaching without a teacher and using primarily internet-based sources. I am writing a CSI fan-fiction about a blended family of sorts. After some ups and downs Sara and Catherine end up living together, but not dating. Sidle, nn Aria - Alexandria Autumn Sidle - Alexandria Journey Sidle ~ She was born in 1992. (either September 16 or March 26). ~ She is a very quiet girl, but not shy at all. Her voice is heard when needed. She is very smart, school work comes easier to her. She’s had an interest in foreign language since a very young age. Over the years she is taught several languages. She likes to read books that have been written in other languages, after she learns the language. All of her music is sung in other languages. To clear her head she runs. She plays the piano. #2. Lindsey Grace Willows, nn Linds ~ She was born in 1993. (either September 16 or March 26). ~ She is very outspoken, much like her Mother. She is popular among her peers, she treats everyone with respect. She is very much into ballet. She knows how to play the piano and guitar. School is not the easiest for her, but she pushes through. She writes a lot, always has a journal and pen on her. #3. ? She is given a strong male name, like her Aunt Noah, because the male name fit best when she was born at only 25 weeks gestation. She is beyond smart, skipping first and second grade and going into third at the young age of six. Her IQ is tested almost every year. She has been shown to already have an eidetic memory. She could jump another two grades easily, but Sara does not allow it already knowing how hard it’d be. She likes to draw, take photos, and shoot video. She plays the drums, piano, guitar, and base. She skateboards, snowboards, surfs, mountain boards, rock climbs, swims, and shots archery. She loves to build and race go-karts. She participates in Judo and Yoga. I was wondering if I learned to play the classical guitar, would that help me when I make the purchase of a steel string guitar? Any help on this would be appreciated. moreResolved Question: Learning Guitar - What to learn?
All right got a guitar and amp, now I want to learn to play, but don't know where to start. I see awesome lessons all over the internet for all kinds of things, but no where have I seen a good plan as to what order to learn things. Can someone tell me where I might find a good plan/schedule? What should I be spending my time on at first (after hand positioning and tuning)? I know it varies depending on what you want to play, but I'm just looking for a good base, something to get me started. If you really need it though, I want to be able just about anything, but my focus at least for now is to get to the point where I can play rock (i.e. Ozzy, AC/DC, Metallica, Zakk Wylde, Jimmy, Guns n' Roses). After that I'll venture out. Of course I wouldn't mind picking up some other good techniques/info/whatever on the way, but for now that's my main goal. Thank you very much for your help! Also I realize guitar is a lifetime pirsuit, a lifestyle, and it take work, time, and dedication so I understand if somethings take a while to learn.Hoping for a real answer here! If I wanted a "just pick a song and learn that" answer I could find one in two seconds. I would like a good well thought out strategy (??). If the only thing you have to contribute is a "just pick a song and learn that" answer then don't post it here. At least give me a link to something rather than giving me a quick crappy answer that I all ready known. To those with helpful contributions, Thank You!!! moreResolved Question: Anybody wanna help a guitar player in need!?!?!? Really need some more experienced tips/teaching!!!!?
I play guitar, many different styles and genres, although my heart is into "that Heavy Metal crap", as some more simple-minded/Not yet deaf people would say. I am not the kind of person to learn other artists songs, but here in the near-past, that is all that i can seem to accomplish. I want to become a better musician to create and share my own original music/songs/ideas/views, and beliefs. I could really use some tips(from someone that is a pro level or better Guitar Player. So to those of who do got some info, please let me in on it. A video, having the contents of, let's say, Chord Construction, Easy ways to learn Chords, w/o actually looking at each ind. Chord, I can just take the base Chord and make it a minor, or major, diminished, aug., etc... Also I have found the ill. of the Circle of fifths, but I wouldn't know the first place to start using that. One more thing, some speed-building exercises would be nice. I just can't keep my fingers off of the Axe!!! So hopefully someone, will jst make me a video containing what I would like/need to learn. Anyway thnx even if you cnt help. moreResolved Question: Mark hoppus bass guitar?

Help!! Please?
I really want to learn to play the guitar. My grandfather has an acoustic guitar that he says I can use to learn the basics on, but I want to find out as much as I can about guitars before getting into it. I also want to know what type of guitar is right for me. I'm thinking of going for an electric one, but then you have to buy an amp and a speaker (or a combo). =S I'm interested in getting this guitar: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROCKBURN-VINTAGE-SERIES-BLOOD-RED-ELECTRIC-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ170274383307QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV?hash=item27a524e5cb&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Or possibly a pink Fender Squier. Here's a list of questions I'd like answered, please! =3 I don't mind being given URLs, either. 1.) What type of guitar should I get? (I'm interested in nearly any kind of music, but mostly rock - is there anywhere where I could hear the differences between acoustic, electro-acoustic, base and electric? Like someone playing chords on them?) 2.) Where can I buy cheap, high-quality amps, loudspeakers, and other guitar accessories? 3.) Is there a lot of effort required to look after a guitar? 4.) Is it easy to learn? 5.) Should I get one second hand or new? 6.) What's the best place to buy a a guitar? 7.) Are most guitar amplifiers combos (loudspeakers and amplifiers) or are they mostly just normal amps, and you have to buy the speaker seperately? Thank you! I really don't mind if you just answer one question, or all of them, or even if you just answer with a relevant URL. I'd like to know nearly everything I can about guitars, since I'm a bit of an idiot for this stuff. DX moreResolved Question: Question for a base player!?

I'm 21 and just bought my first home. I walked around my house last night while my fiance's family was there with a small novelty guitar, playing "Un-break My Heart" (to be funny). My fiance's dad dropped a comment about me going to church and learning some christian songs. It got me thinking. He will ONLY listen to Christian music, particularly worship - usually hip hop or alternative styles. I dislike that music so much; I would go so far out of my way to not have to listen to them. I am a musician, singer and songwriter and while I listen to and write a small bit of faith-based pieces, my preference of music is not christian. The "christian bands" that I like don't rock on the worship side (underoath, emery, bless the fall). I find beauty in songs that convey all aspects of life, ideals, history, abstraction, whatever. I will never narrow my listening to only a religious point of view. My father-in-law-to-be has already made it clear that he will not dance to secular music at our wedding. I respect his choice and honor that he has such a commitment only to music that speaks to him and I wouldn't ask that he partake in anything he doesn't want to. What do you think of his standpoint? What do you think of mine? moreResolved Question: Someone help me read books?
Im 15 and I've always thought that reading books was boring and a gigantic waste of life (sorry if that offended you). Im currently in high school and Ive noticed that some of my peers are talking like teenage professionals. I've always seen them read a book in their spare time and my guess is that the reason why they're so smart is because they enjoy reading. I hate reading books as I said before but I just realized that without books I will stick as a fob for the rest of my life. I'm a big music fan based on blues, rock, metal, etc. (basically any musical genre that consists of drums, guitar, bass, and vocalist) and some classical like piano and orchestra. I study about different kinds of genres and learn the whole history behind it. I even read biographies of different musicians. These musicians inspired me to play musical instruments and I'm proud to play them. I recently started taking guitar lessons and was doing fine until i started to learn cords. On my left hand I have a really hard time using my ring and pinkie finger. At first I just thought I just needed to build up the flexibility and strength. But then the pain started. It began in my ring finger and shot down into the area where the ring finger attaches to the hand and shoots across to the base of the pinkie finger. It is now almost a constant pain whether or not I am playing the guitar (but that definitely aggravates it). whenever i try to straighten out my ring and pinkie finger completely it also hurts. As a kid I had shattered my ring finger so I am wondering if there was some kind of nerve damage. Any ideas? It is just so frustrating and it isn't helping cuz I am left handed.I forgot to add that i have been taking guitar lessons for several months. Once it started hurting playing the guitar even writing would set it off. Ok first off I don't know anything about guitar--I just bought a cheap acoustic guitar but don't know a thing or what the difference between a chord or a tab is or anything. I don't need to be whipping out Slayer or Dragonforce riffs, I just want to learn how to play and write old school type country, stuff like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. What are some good sites for total beginners and do you know of any that focus on old country? How hard is that stuff to play? I don't have access to lessons because I'm on a military base and they don't have anything like that here (and I'm in Japan so I can't go out in town).
