Resolved Question: Guitarists! Good online resources for learning Delta Blues on guitar?

I've really gotten into the sounds like Blind Willie McTell and Son House and I want to be able to play like them. So far, I've learned to play the standard blues progressions and solo over them in the blues scales pretty well, but it sounds a lot more like Blues-Rock or "Electric Blues". The basic "text-book" blues stuff is so straightforward (12 bars, blues-scales, occasionally departing from blues-scales to resolve on chord-notes, etc), but it sounds nothing like the down-home feel. I want to add a folksy finger-picking, slide element to my blues. Where to start? more

Resolved Question: Should I buy this electric guitar?

I think I've asked this question here for the 3rd time. -It's an unpainted (but still looks good) lightwood RJ BluesBreaker Les Paul (yes, it's a copy), about US$120 on sale. I've tried it, and it feels and sounds good for me. One of my major concerns is that the brand is not well-known and is by a newly-founded company. Despite this, I've read a lot of positive reviews on it online, all of them gave high scores. -I'm not a beginner, but I'm also not an expert. I can do pretty good rhythm and I study lead. I play a lot of rock, many types of rock, but more on the heavy/hard stuff than the soft ones. I've only been playing electric guitar for maybe 3-4 years. -I jam with my friends a lot, sometimes I play at presentations for parties and other events, but most of the time I just have fun playing/learning songs in my bedroom or teach guitar to my younger brother. Do you think I should buy this? If not, can you recommend others for the same price? more

Resolved Question: Where should i start when learning slide guitar?

I just picked up a glass slide from a local guitar shop, it fits on my ring and index finger, i had been interested in it for a while but i don't know where to begin. I've been playing guitar for about three, all self taught so I basically just know how to play. I have acoustic and electric guitars, can I play slide on both? What types of music can you play with slide guitar? Im a 17 year old girl who likes indie rock type stuff but when it comes to playing guitar my musical range is much wider. I have been looking online for websites that could help me but im a bit lost and don't quite understand the stuff im reading. Do you know of any sites that could help me? Or any video/ lesson type things too? If their is anything else i should know about learning slide please let me know :) more

Resolved Question: Help with electric guitar.?

Well just yesterday i staarted learning to play the guitar on my own..my sister gave me her electric guitar ( its made by fender...Squier Bullet.) and books because she dosent play it anymore. i dont have anything to tune it with so i looked up how to do it and tuned it myself and i think that i did a pretty good job..not that good but good hah..anyways. Resolved Question: What is a somewhat easy instrument to learn that you think I would like?

I want to learn to play an instrument because I love classical music, but I'm not sure which I would really like. A bit more than half a year ago I was searching around online a bit to see what would suit me. Then one of my mom's friends offered her a great deal on an acoustic guitar. It was only $110 dollars. She bought it for me and it is the most beautiful sounding guitar ever, but I just can't get into it. I just don't really like playing it that much for some reason. I don't like to quit things after I just start them (I never really do that actually), but I want to try something else. I was considering drums because I've tried my cousin's before and I really like playing them. I haven't really played anything on them though. I just keep a simple steady beat with them whenever I go over to his house and play them. I get so mesmerized by a slow steady beat. I don't know if this would be too hard to learn though. My brother is one of those people who like playing music more than anything. He's getting an electric violin for Hanuka this year, and I was thinking maybe I could try it and see if I like that. My brother plays piano, trumpet, flute, and harmonica if your wondering. I'm kinda good at reading music too. So what instrument do you think is pretty easy to learn and what do you think I should learn? more

Resolved Question: Is the Violin difficult to start up quickly?

Two years ago, the only instruments I could play were the trombone and I could play a few chords on the piano. Since then, I've learned to the play the Ukulele really well, the guitar, and the bass. I have been finding more and more situations that I wish I could someone who could play the violin for various reasons, but we don't have any stringed instruments at our school other than an electric guitar and bass. So I guess I'm asking, is Violin something that's extremely expensive and hard to start to play? I've heard it's difficult for children, but I'm used to holding up an instrument and using my arms to move it (the trombone). It seems like an instrument that would be expensive, but I found some beginners online for under $45, and I can pay that. My parents would be thrilled to learn that I want to try. I'm asking if it's something that requires lessons or if it's something I can learn on my own, like I did with ukulele and others. more

Resolved Question: For anyone with bipolar disorder...?

What are your manic episodes and depressive episodes like? I was diagnosed as bipolar when I was 16 (I'm 18 now) and I never believed it, so as soon as I moved away to college I stopped taking my meds. At first I was fine but then about 2 months or so ago I started behaving in ways that were extremely not me. I'm not a prude, but I'm not much for partying, drinking, drugs, and random sex and I'd always been a good student. However, over the course of those 2 months I started smoking weed, did massive amounts of cocaine, slept with 5 or 6 different random people I've never seen again, skipped so many classes that I'm at risk of academic probation because I'm failing 3 of 6 classes I'm taking, blew all of my $600 I had saved up on a new electric guitar (I don't even play), tons of clothes, drugs, and cigarettes, and filmed myself having sex with this girl and encouraged her to put it up online (she's pretty skanky, although so was I) so she did and now she's refusing to take it down. During the episode I never went to sleep before 5 AM, spent all night pacing the floor talking to myself about what I was going to do tomorrow or imagining myself in certain situations, and changed my major 5 times to majors that were just illogical. I have a learning disability in math and actually changed my major to math for a week because I was convinced I didn't really have a disability. Ultimately I crashed a few days ago and I barely even remember that day. I was agitated, hated myself, literally didn't get out of bed the entire day, felt dizzy and "out of it", and felt like a failure. The next day I woke up and I was myself. No urge to do drugs or have sex, I actually started regretting all I did and wondering why the hell I did it. It literally was like I was someone else. I've started taking my meds again and I'm fine now, but still have to suffer the consequences of my episode (being broke, failing my classes, having a random porn vid somewhere out there). For anyone who has bipolar disorder, or knows someone who does, care to share a story about your worst episode? What was it like? more

Resolved Question: are there any LEGAL online money making websites for 13 year olds?

Resolved Question: Guitarist looking to learn the Mandolin. What are the main differences?

Hello, I've been playing guitar for about a year and a half, and I love it! The only problem I have is I can't lug around my big electric guitar everywhere to play when I have some free time on the road or at my Grandma's house or whatever. I recently took interest in Mandolins and admire their small stature and bright sound. I figure bringing a Mandolin along with me places wouldn't be as much of a hassle and it wouldn't weigh me down to much if I wore it with a strap. My concern is, my main musical interest lies in Beatles tunes, and Mandolin tab is really hard to find online. Can guitar tab somehow be transferred to Mandolin, or would I have to come up with all new tab? Is the Mandolin very different from the guitar? And lastly, is it worth it for me to buy a Mandolin? Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Can i learn to play the electric guitar from the internet alone? Jackson guitar owners see this.?

Resolved Question: I really want to learn to play guitar?

Ok, so I've been doing some research and I saw that it's easier to learn on an electric guitar than an acoustic. Besides, I would rather play an electric anyway, I like the sound better, so if I were to get an acoustic it would be a waste of money. Ok so here's my question, I know you need an amp in order to hear the full quality of the guitar. I found this one online but idk if it's good cuz I pretty much want to get everything I need in one buy so that when I receive it, I can play it that very minute! So please tell me if this is a good electric guitar for beginners . I wasn't sure if it was a real guitar or not cuz if you read the first review someone says how it feels like a grown up instrument not a toy. Please get back and let me know. Esp those who are familiar with string instruments. Thanx =) http://fingerhut.com/ProductGroup.aspx?offergroupxid=41327&cmQID=o9u9qqXDe9wf0R9Uwh2wbghwlv9aVf4u0Ns+ignLkuR1O2Z0Raknv0YAnc4TltHOaJJRbtw, the fact that it's mini doesnt bother me, im small...im only 5'2 so it'd be perfect for me, so long as it still plays like a full size guitar. more

Resolved Question: is high action better then low action on an electric guitar?

I mainly like to play a lot of metal and shred a lot. i have very fast fingers. my guitar does not buzz no matter what action i have it on it has a flyod rose lo pro edge bridge so i have experimented a lot with action as it was easy to adjust. when i have it really low it does not buzz and its not hard to play at all its just i never feal the strings and my fingers go way to fast i end up notes ahead of me picking after a while and it just gets sloppy. even when i sweep pick my fingers come up way to early no matter what i do i cant go slow enough on low action its way to easy to go fast and sucks in my opinion when it comes to the tone i hear and my calouses are so big i cant feal the strings. so i decided to raise my action and it was a miracle my hands coordinated much better. it slowed me down just enough yet it sounded better. is high action actually better? people online i read say low action they think is better for this because its easier but i find it goes to fast and you dont actually feal like your playing the guitar it feals like your playing a keyboard with no springs and i cant understand how you get any fidelity on bends, or noting or any techinique it feals like the guitar plays its self. is this true what i am experiencing is high action better? i have only been playing the guitar for a month with my first guitar ever an ibanez rg570ct. is it possible i am not doing anything advanced enough to notice the difference. i have been learned to play iron man, canon rock, and my latest song i have learned to play is steve vai's the audience is listening. are those songs difficult enough to notice which action is better? more

Resolved Question: Help with information on starting to play the guitar?

I am thinking about starting to play the guitar. I do not have one, I only have a $20 'toy' guitar. Which would be good for beginner? I am also looking for a cheap as possible. I'm mostly interested in playing electric, could I start on an electric or should I learn on acoustic? Also, could I teach myself using resources online or would it be best to take lessons? I know these are a lot of questions, but any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks!! more

Resolved Question: Guitar lessons in Massachusetts?

I'm 13 years old. I really wanna take guitar lessons, i've been wanting to learn how to play the electric guitar for a very long time. I really love the electric guitar and it sucks not knowing how to play it when other people can. I'm a big fan of Metallica, they've influenced me to pick up the guitar. I live in Lynn, Massachusetts which is about 15 minutes away from Boston. I've tried taking online lessons, but they really haven't helped me that much. I'm a beginner. I want someone with alot of experience and i wanna learn how to play speed metal guitar. My dad says guitar lessons are really expensive but and that we can afford it, but i don't think they're that expensive that we can't afford it. So how much do guitar lessons really cost? If you can, list some places where i can get guitar lessons around my area. more

Resolved Question: How can I learn guitar quickly?

I'm 14 years old and I am interested in finally putting my electric guitar to use. The only problem is that I don't want to waste money on lessons if I'm not getting the full benefit. For example, I know someone who has taken guitar lessons for years and has become fairly good, but can only play specific songs that were taught in lessons. I would like to learn how to play in general, so that I could read music and play different types of songs. I am a fast learner, and even though I do understand that it takes time to learn, I don't want to waste time by learning at a slow pace. If you know of any online tutorials or good books, please let me know. I am a beginner so I need to learn everything. Thank you! more

I am 15, and i have never played guitar, i played guitar hero, which has almost no value to learning guitar, I am not rich, as i am only 15, i make minimum wage, and i only work one day a week for 6 hours so im not looking for top of the line, but i am looking for a electric guitar, that can play all my favorite songs, like One,Scars-Poppa roach, Last resort, i know guitar is not easy to learn, and will take a lot of time, but i am one of those lucky people who has to see stuff happen or i will be bored, and i would be amazed by me playing 3 notes over and over again, so this is perfect for me (Plus there is music sheets by tabs so yeah) so my question is this what kind of guitar am i looking for. Would a guitar from Target be ok, or should i look out for a certain type. BTW at max i will only want to buy 2 guitars for the next 5 years so it has to be cheap and can be bought online or at a store, and work real good. Thank you guys, this really will help me, and if you could write down what to expect within the first month of playing and learning. Thanks.. -Zlap more

Resolved Question: How did you learn to play guitar?

I'm trying to learn guitar online, since I don't have the time or money for private lessons. But what worked for you? What to focus on, what mistakes to avoid, etc, whatever insights and stories you can offer. Just two minor points you can address if you want. *Should I try to learn on acoustic and electric at the same time? *How long/how much foundation should I get in guitar before starting on the piano? Want to learn both.Should have mentioned, I have background in piano and music theory but haven't played in years. more

Resolved Question: I want to purchase an electric guitar?

I don't want to just go down to the store now unless this is really something that I want to do so here's the criteria: -I'm a college student and don't have much to spend -I'm looking to play a lot of death metal from bands such as In Flames and Children of Bodom -With 2 jobs and an online class i'm taking i'm going to be really busy My biggest concern is that the songs by these bands are too hardcore and I'm not going to have enough time to learn how to play songs by these bands in my spare time. more

Resolved Question: Im trying to learn how to play guitar, where should i begin?

im trying to learn electric guitar, i have the guitar and the amp. i've searched for sites for weeks and have found nothing helpful! private lessons are to expensive. the videos online haven't helped because they don't really tell you what they're doing they just play. i search for songs but they are too difficult for a beginner like me or the way they are written to play is hard to read(as in where to put your fingers and so on). all i know now is the one part of smoke on the water! :( i would like to know some sites that have good lessons or easier songs so i can have something to start with. more

Resolved Question: Lots of questions with learning guitar?

I'm 13 and I really want to learn how to play the guitar. I'd like to start learning this summer so I thought I could teach myself for the time being. Problem is, I don't have a guitar. So I'm using my brother's electric guitar to practice with. I would like to have an acoustic guitar, but my family is kinda having money issues like a lot of people in America and so I don't want them to have to spend money just to get me a guitar. Any ways to raise money besides fundraisers? Also, I saw a guitar on musician's friend that was on sale for 100 dollars. It has great reviews and looks good for a beginner, but would it be to big? http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-DR100-Acoustic-Guitar-?sku=518569 I'm like the smallest kid in my grade. Also, as for lessons, do you think they are that necessary? I can look up chords online so I don't really see how they are that necessary. It's not like I want to become a serious guitar soloist, I just want to know how to play so that I can accompany my voice. Kris Allen (who won American Idol- yay!!) learned to play by himself... do I really need lessons? more

Resolved Question: i need a guitar tutor anyone interested?

Resolved Question: Fender Or Ibanez? New guitarist?

Hiya! I'm just getting interested in guitar playing, i had the chance to pick up an acoustic "Squier By Fender" at a pawnshop for $50, But i've become less enouraged with playing becuase what i want to play is Heavy Metal, Kind of like Dokken and Lynch Mob if you know of them. I just got the acoustic to practice learning untill i could spend more for an electric, and I've learned that i hate acoustics, the body is just too thick, plus it doesnt have a strap button so I have to hold it up myself... Anywho, I'm getting the money for an electric guitar. I'm going to get $250, and I was thinkign about going with one of the value packs from the local guitar center. Now, for metal music, what am I going to want to go with? Fender or Ibanez? There's packages for both. I prefer the look of fenders but its about sound and feel not looks correct? I'm not sure which is better suited for me. I truly want a BC Rich Beast or Warlock, those look friggin awesome, but the ones i've seen online dont seem to have the...forgive me for calling it this, but the only termonology i know would be "Whammy bar" (i know lmfao..) but yeah, as i watch people playing around with those and it makes the sound quite cool while shredding. (i've also noticed BC Rich cost a bit more and i cant exceed 250 for a guitar and amp) I'm not too knowledgeable on this as i'm jstu starting out, so any info i'd greatly appreciate! I'm 19 and ready to rock!!! :Omy issue with being able to try them out is...I can't play guitar yet, i cant read music/tabs, i cant play any chords, i'm like 100% beginner. I want to grow into an awesome guitarist however, George lynch would be my idol, and i don't know what kind of guitar he uses! :( i hear him tlaking about ESP but i'm not sure if thats some sort of sponsering company or a guitar brand more

Resolved Question: I need guitar help...?

okay, I bought a guitar the other day, its acoustic electric I think. and, well. I wanted to learn to play a few songs on it, but I'm hopelessly confused. So I looked up some online guitar lessons and found this : http://guitar.about.com/library/weekly/aa071200j.htm So I'm pretty sure I did what it was asking me to do. I plucked the string with my pick, and held it down as it said, and it makes this 'ting!' noise. and well. I don't think its supposed to. I think I might be putting to much pressure onto the string? or something along the lines of that? Like I said, i'm hopelessly confused. Please help? Thanks so much :)Edit: I think it might have? I'm not exactly sure, but is it supposed to make that "ting!" noise whenl i pluck it?Yeah it did help! I was also holding it wrong, and my fingers were touching other strings. >.> lol. but yeah, that was the problem, thanks much :) more

I want to learn guitar, but I have a few questions first. Acoustic or electric for starting? Where are some free online videos I can watch and learn from? How long does it take to learn how to get the hang of it usually? What are good brands of guitars to buy? I want to eventually play electric but I don't know if I should start with acoustic first. more
