Learn To Play The Guitar Online Questions asked

Open Question: Can Anyone Tell Me What Key This Song Is In?

hello, i am 16 and learning to play a song on guitar by a british singer-songwriter called Frank Turner. I have been teaching myself from online tab, but have found it is in a difficult key for me to sing. I have tried putting a capo in various places but i still struggle to sing in tune. I have found this youtube video of a girl playing it on piano, and she has changed the key its in and i can sing it in this key. can anybody tell my what key it is actually in? so i can transfer it to guitar :) thanks xx here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpe1QJhiGV8and i should totally win an award for the most times the word "key" is used in a paragraph :P haha more

Resolved Question: What are some good songs for a beginner fingerstyle guitarist?

I've known a couple chords on the guitar for a long time, but have never really had time to learn properly (I also play piano and cello). Well, recently, I picked up my dad's guitar and decided to learn "Drifting" by Andy McKee. (I used some tabs I found online and a tutorial video on YouTube.) It took me three days, and now I'm hooked (haha). So, my question is, where do I go from here? I'm thinking some other fairly easy Andy McKee stuff (actually I like almost all the CandyRat artists), but I don't know where to start. Any ideas? Also, any other tips for getting started would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! more

Open Question: Will music lessons help me or should I try to learn on my own/by ear?

I have musical ambitions, I'd like to be able to have a career making music. I know its a long shot, and I keep things in perspective, but I want to try for it anyway. I want to learn the guitar and the piano. I've tried various online guitar courses but have gotten frustrated and never completed any of them. I think mainly because I worry that somehow I'm doing something wrong and just not having the confidence to think that I'm learning it right or making progress on my own. But then I see these people that are completely self taught and play things by ear, it impresses and intimidates me at the same time, I worry that these people are just inherently more talented than I will ever be and maybe I'll never get anywhere with this. Anyway, I guess what I'm wondering is, will taking private lessons for some time give me the head start that I need to do well and have a better understanding of music or should I just look for new techniques for self teaching? Thank you for any advice. more

Resolved Question: How do i learn to play metal guitar?

I've been playing guitar for around 3 years but i play mostly acoustic right now and even when i play electric it's more acoustic type songs. Now i want to start playing metalcore and heavy stuff like that but i'm not really sure where to start. I've searched some online and messed around a bit but i can't really seem to get far with it. So.. i was wondering if there's someone who could explain the different stuff and give some pretty in depth instructions if that's possible. Or if you have any really good links that help with that kind of stuff that would be cool too. Thanks more

Voting Question: Where to buy OK-quality bass guitars in Hong Kong and is this one good or not?

I'm 16, never played the bass before but I want to. Screw the fact that I'm a girl. I have a problem with budget though. I'm not big on low quality, stupid, one-use stuff. So are there any shops (particularity in Tai Po or Tsing Yi or even Mong Kok because those are the areas I stay/go to a lot) that sell bass without charging me overprice? Online auctions are okay too. But I have to admit, this is really tempting: http://hk.f2.page.auctions.yahoo.com/hk/auction/b14808189 Unfortunately. 1) I don't read Chinese despite being half Hong Kong 2) I know about guitars and which stuff is good, which isn't, but I have no idea about bass. So... does this seem worth it, or is it a one-use thing? After all, it's pretty cheap, not to mention the fact that it has an amp together with it (I think). But I don't see a brand so I'm hesitating. Oh, and I've never played the bass before, it'll be my first, but I still want something that would last or that wouldn't give me a hard time in learning (I do plan to take lessons, but I plan to self-learn as well) If above is really a one-time thing, anyone who knows good shops and share them with me will be loved. Thank youI re-checked the link, I know a LITTLE chinese, so I got confused: does that auction include the bass guitar itself or just a tuner and amp? more

Voting Question: Need help figuring out strumming patterns.?

I'm trying to learn songs on the guitar and I understand what chords to play and their order. But I can't figure out the patterns for them (the up and down strokes, the 1 & 2 &'s, etc.). Most lessons online don't tell you how to either. Kinda frustrating...any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Interested in learning guitar online - any good tips?

Resolved Question: Where to learn to play the guitar online?

Is there a website that can teach you how to play the guitar step by step? Like a website where they have steps? And yes I know that paying for lessons are much better, but that is not an option and I have learned a lot on my own already, and I have friends who can help me when I get stuck. more

Resolved Question: Learning to Play the Banjo?

I learned how to read music in school as a little kid and taught myself to play piano (I'm pretty good) a couple years back. I can play a little bass guitar, but not as much as piano, and now I'm seriously considering learning to play banjo. My question is, as a near-complete beginner in the realm of stringed instruments, will I be able to teach myself to play banjo? I'm a pretty smart guy, so I think I could understand the mechanics of it, and, as I said, I taught myself to play piano a couple years ago and have grown quite proficient in it, so I know I have the ability, patience, and discipline to teach myself a new instrument. And I'm also pretty good with music in general. I'm just looking for a knowledgeable third party's thoughts on this, so what's your honest opinion? Also, if you do feel I can learn it, can you recommend any good starting banjos or beginner's banjo kits/books? Preferably ones that I can find online for a relatively low price (I'm just doing it for fun, I don't want to spend a fortune) that are still of acceptable quality? I know that's a lot to ask, but I really could use some help on this one. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Where to learn to play guitar online?

I've just gotten an acoustic steel-string guitar and figure that instead of spending my money on lessons I can just find out, step-by-step, how to learn to play the guitar online (needless to say,for free). I'm assuming that this instrument should be easy enough to attempt to master on your own. I hope I'm right. Does anybody know of any good websites that would help me get started (at least for the basics). Also, feel free to share your learning guitar lessons with me. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Need some vocal recording advice?

I am working on trying to promote my singing, so I want to make good cd, and possible a video to post online, but I have never really worked with much audio recording myself. Can anyone offer some advice on good recording equipment/software that I can use. What type of mic i need, ect. I write songs, but I am in the process of learning how to play piano or guitar to sing along to them. So for the time being I would basically be singing other peoples songs. Resolved Question: Time with spouse vs. time alone--what is fair?

My wife and I are in our late 20's. We have been married for 2.5 years. We have been through many arguments, but we have also had many wonderful moments--which I gather is normal. We moved to a new place for my job, so we don't know very many people here. My wife works 15 hours a week to help support our finances a little bit, but for the most part, she's at home. She is diligent, does all the chores, bills, cooks, and cleans. Since it's just the two of us, it's not much--but I still appreciate it. She manages to find time to read online articles, keep in touch with friends and family. She is telling me about a wonderful book she is reading right now; she goes shopping for gifts, does arts and crafts such as scrapbooking, finds ways to decorate our place, etc (while I'm at work). I appreciate the things she does, but in a way, I am envious. I don't remember the last time I was able to read a book. I have voiced to her interest in learning new hobbies. I am particularly interested in learning guitar, writing short stories, learning how to program flash games, martial arts. She tells me she supports me, but whenever I tell her I need alone time in these endeavors, she becomes defensive--claiming that I don't want to spend time with her, or that I long to be single again. We spend entire weekends together. I promised her, happily, when we married, I would take her out on a date every Saturday--or if we don't go out, we'd spend time together in some form. I continue to keep my word. She suggested a new tradition on Sundays--we cook breakfast together. She likes to sleep in on weekends, but I, being a morning person, wake up early. So I try to do 'me things' in the morning when I'm not too exhausted, but she expects me to spend time with her when she wakes up till she sleeps (which means staying up late--being awake for nearly 24 hours on some occasions, or getting 3-4 hours of sleep before waking up for work the next day). I try so hard and I really do enjoy spending time with her, but after doing weekly chores and getting ready for the next week, the weekend is over. I want to find activities that challenge me mentally, push my physical limits, or tap into my creative / artistic mindset. If I push the issue enough, it always becomes an argument--I then get my time to do things alone, but it's hard to do creative writing right after fighting with my wife. It's hard to play guitar when my wife, in mockery, is bitterly and blatantly ignoring me for my 1-2 hours. I suppose the conflict could push me to run an extra mile (jk). I have told her on many occasions that when we spend time together, I have always shown a good attitude about what she enjoys, but she always abhors what I enjoy when it doesn't pertain to her likes. For example, I have watched all seasons of Sex and the City with her (every episode, including the movie). I have asked her to purchase an adventure video game that we can both take turns playing, unfolding a story interactively--she declines, saying she doesn't enjoy video games. For me, I didn't watch TV, by choice, for an entire decade. When discussing time together and time apart, what standards are fair, generally speaking? What have you and your spouse done that worked well for you? What have you done that backfired or did not work well? Is there a good book about this aspect of marriage? more

Resolved Question: How to go about learning guitar......?

Ive been playing guitar for a year and a half, I know intermediate songs (closer to the heart, la villa strangiato etc.) and i never learned any music theory. I can play pretty much anything if in tab form. I barely know the notes on the fretboard and pretty much no chords. Ive tried learning music theory through online lessons but it didnt help. Resolved Question: Suggest some songs I can practice to improve my guitar skills?

Hello, I'm just a beginner-intermediate guitarist..... I can't play that much yet, but as in terms of right now, I can play Sweet Child O' Mine the whole song as lead guitar, and also I'm Alright by Neil Zaza (but of course, the simpler version by Jerry C, not the original with so much sweep picking). Is there any other song I might be able to learn to improve or have good learn on shredding, sweeping, and legato? Thanks for your help, and also some online guitar lesson site might help too. (in terms of music I like bands such as Avenged Sevenfold, or any type of metal/rock/hard rock band and even the ---core bands) Well, any type of rock would do.. any idea what song I should try? more

Resolved Question: Tips for singing warm ups being able to express my music/ ideas to rest of people I am playing music with ect.?

Hey I just wanted to know, since I'm about to get a bunch of Brett Manning CD's offline, I just figured it would be a good idea to ask yahoo's musicians for some advice on vocals/ singing/ writing music and more. ok here we go. 1. I definitely want to work on my range, and do my best to perfect my chest voice and falsetto and make sure I have very good transitional quality in my voice, and I want to just live up to my full potential with my vocals since you only live once and I might as well be able to sing real good. Yes I know. Practice practice practice. But I just want to find a good approach to it and I want to make it into a daily routine, which is tough, but I'm committed as long as I know what I'm doing. 2. I really want to learn how to play piano, guitar, and actually for some reason I'm tempted to play the saxophone. Do you know where I could find online sources to great guitar/ piano/other musical instruments lessons and info so I can start getting into that. (I have a piano now and I like to mess around on it, but I know I need to start understanding everything better and practicing more) 3. I'm really interested in music so I'm hoping you guys could spark up some innovation and give me some wonderful insight to further help me with what I'm trying to do musically now. 4. Right now I'm in a band, which we actually just started up. I'm singing, and that's all I know how to do now. I want to be very flexible with it though because I'm not in it just to be all Jonas Brothers and stuff... haha. I'm in it for the music and because I want to be able to express the songs in my head, and the ideas that are always floating around. I write poetry all the time, and it seems like I never can change it into songs. I guess I'll have to figure that out another time. Anyway, Too many questions in one... hopefully some of you guys can help me out. Thanks a ton! I really appreciate your help! :D more

Resolved Question: What would you tell a beginning guitar player to learn, advice?

So a guy who is setting up a new server for work caught me looking at guitars online and told me he just got one a couple months ago. It got me wondering, since I am self taught, I had to piece things together throughout the years. It's been about 15 or 16 years now and I completely forgot how hard it is to start learning guitar, just hearing a simple word like hammer-on, or pull off, or harmonic was completely foreign back then, but is as simple as 1-2-3 to me nowadays. I wanted to give him a couple tips for learning, so I told him about chromatic exercises and how to search for stuff on youtube. What I wanted to know was, how did everyone here first start learning, or what did you learn? Did you start off trying to play rhythm or lead? Did you take lessons or self teach yourself? Stuff like that. Also, what are a couple basic things I can tell this guy? Like, what key should he start with? I started with the key of C. Do you think that's a good key to start in? He said he'll start taking lessons, but I figured I would tell him to also get a beginner DVD and chord/scale book, as well as asking other guitarists for tips. Do you guys have any good beginner DVD's and books for him to get?Damn, sounds like I need a tutor as well... lol.Nowhere in the same sentence or paragraph did I mention scales or keys with hammer-ons/pull offs. This question isn't to try to teach myself guitar, its to give advice to someone else just starting out a couple of things to start learning to get his feet wet, so I was making a reference to how hard it is to learn simple things in the beginning, things that are second nature to me, like hammer-ons and pull-offs. I have no clue how you got that confused with keys which I mentioned 3 or 4 paragraphs later. Try reading the question/questions again. more

Resolved Question: Guitar book gift for boyfriend's birthday?

My boyfriend loves his acoustic guitar- so for his birthday I'd like to get him a book that teaches him more - and potentially contains some great acoustic songs. He already knows how to play guitar pretty well so I'd say he's at the advanced level (he can learn a new song in about an hour by looking at music sheets online)...any ideas? Or does anyone have any suggestions on something I can get him for his 21st birthday? more

Resolved Question: Where can I find free online sheet music with the notes on it?

I'm learning how to play acoustic guitar and I can sortof read tab and notes. Problem is I can only read the letters and not the stick things. I know where the notes are on the guitar but I cant find any music which has the notes attatched. Even if its piano music I can alter it, but I can't find it. Thanks more

Resolved Question: my hands are tied, what should i do?

i wanna play the guitar but i was wondering if it was better to learn to play an instrument at home from dvds, books and online lessons or to get actual lessons from a teacher? the teacher would cost quite alot but it'd be so much easier to learn, but to teach yourself is cheap and u can work at ur own pace but is quite difficult. more

Voting Question: What is the best guitar for a beginner?

I am looking to learn how to play the guitar, but I not sure what guitar to buy. I have looked online and in stores and its rather overwhelming. I don't know quite what I should be looking for. I want something that is good quality and I have budgeted up to $250 for it, but I would prefer not to spend that much. Any advice on the best one to get. I am definitely thinking I want an acoustic guitar, but beyond that I have no idea. Another concern that I have is that I am a college student and I spend a lot of time traveling back and forth across the country. I am worried that a guitar might get damaged on my flights. Is there a way to protect a guitar against the perils of air travel? Any advice you can give me on what guitar to buy and just general advice for beginners I would much appreciate it. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Advice on Learning guitar?

So I've been playing acoustic for about three months, I first started learning chords, than I learned wonderwall by Oasis. Im also working scales and different keys (i can play twinkle twinkle little star in the key of c) , I dont take lesson I just learn from online and through books. I can play time of your life by Greenday pretty well i practice it everyday, I can arpeggiate the intro as well. I just feel like im falling behind, cause i dont take lessons. I also try to practice an hour a day. Do you guys have any advice of how to stay on track, or should i learn more songs or what. Thanks for the help. I really really appreciate it. more
