Open Question: electric guitar/ bass for beginner?
i'm planning to learn how to play the guitar and was wondering if an amp was required for a beginner or to play at all? moreOpen Question: More SM Trainees Days ?
More SM Trainees Days ? 1) Did SM put you in a dorm with same gender or mix (boys and girls) ? 2) When they put you in a dorm, is that mean they are you band mate like you'll be debut alongside them ? 3) Do the trainers in SM speak in English or Korean ? Because I cant learn the language in one day , cant I ? 4) How do they test your skills in either dancing, singing, or acting ? (maybe like a sing-off competition or something?) 5) For your information, i'm still learning playing guitar and bass guitar. So when I'm auditioning, should I mentioned I can play those instrument because I'm still learning . 6) In SM, did they teach you to play musical instrument that you like ? moreOpen Question: Where to buy OK-quality bass guitars in Hong Kong and is this one good or not?
I'm 16, never played the bass before but I want to. Screw the fact that I'm a girl. I have a problem with budget though. I'm not big on low quality, stupid, one-use stuff. So are there any shops (particularity in Tai Po or Tsing Yi or even Mong Kok because those are the areas I stay/go to a lot) that sell bass without charging me overprice? Online auctions are okay too. But I have to admit, this is really tempting: http://hk.f2.page.auctions.yahoo.com/hk/auction/b14808189 Unfortunately. 1) I don't read Chinese despite being half Hong Kong 2) I know about guitars and which stuff is good, which isn't, but I have no idea about bass. So... does this seem worth it, or is it a one-use thing? After all, it's pretty cheap, not to mention the fact that it has an amp together with it (I think). But I don't see a brand so I'm hesitating. Oh, and I've never played the bass before, it'll be my first, but I still want something that would last or that wouldn't give me a hard time in learning (I do plan to take lessons, but I plan to self-learn as well) If above is really a one-time thing, anyone who knows good shops and share them with me will be loved. Thank youI re-checked the link, I know a LITTLE chinese, so I got confused: does that auction include the bass guitar itself or just a tuner and amp? moreVoting Question: Urg!!!!!!! What do i do to Convince them? ( Someone who Knows about music)?
Ok well I love Music i Play Violin.Piano, Guitar and Bass i Love Playing all those Instruments but the problem is i Really want to play saxophone but when i asked my dad he said no and i asked why and he said Because it's well different then any other instrument i can play meaning my ear won't adjust to the sax! My dad only plays Guitar and Piano he knows really nothing bout violin or sax that'shats the reason he won't let me learn it because of my ear! I would really like to play Sax more then anything but violin how do i convince him to let me take lessons??? moreResolved Question: Learning to Play the Banjo?
I learned how to read music in school as a little kid and taught myself to play piano (I'm pretty good) a couple years back. I can play a little bass guitar, but not as much as piano, and now I'm seriously considering learning to play banjo. My question is, as a near-complete beginner in the realm of stringed instruments, will I be able to teach myself to play banjo? I'm a pretty smart guy, so I think I could understand the mechanics of it, and, as I said, I taught myself to play piano a couple years ago and have grown quite proficient in it, so I know I have the ability, patience, and discipline to teach myself a new instrument. And I'm also pretty good with music in general. I'm just looking for a knowledgeable third party's thoughts on this, so what's your honest opinion? Also, if you do feel I can learn it, can you recommend any good starting banjos or beginner's banjo kits/books? Preferably ones that I can find online for a relatively low price (I'm just doing it for fun, I don't want to spend a fortune) that are still of acceptable quality? I know that's a lot to ask, but I really could use some help on this one. Thank you. moreResolved Question: So there's this guy..?
K uhmm theres this guy in 3 of my classes that i never really payed attention to before, but after kind of getting to know him, i'm starting to fall for him.. His locker is next to mine, and lately we've been making tons of conversation. I've learned that we like the same music, tv shows, sports, style, and we both play instruments. Some days i feel like he's flirting with me (since i play guitar and he plays bass, he asked if i would "jam with him sometime", and other days he doesn't talk to me at all. I try to flirt with him, and I always feel jelous when he talks to other girls, but I don't know if it's worth it. He is the nicest guy and i feel he's perfect for me (not to meantion he is very attractive) but should I ask him out/persue this relationship? I don't know if he's interested or what? I'm so confused because i've never 'crushed" so hard lol. What should I do? Sorry this is really long lol Thanks SOO much, i really appreciate it.I'm also moving schools next year so I don't have that much time :( moreResolved Question: I want to learn two instruments is this a good idea?
i currently play Bass Guitar and i want to start playing accoustic guitar i wouldn't cost me any money (except buying the guitar but i know someone who i can borrow from) im also currently in school though and my father thinks that it would snow ball and i would get to stressed. I want to start learning guitar from a young age i don't want to stop playing bass but i feel i have already learnt almost all there is to know about bass and its just the matter of joining a band and getting experience if you think i should stick with bass say so and why but if you think it wouldnt be bad for me to start accoustic as well then say so and the reasons why (hopefully i can build a strong argument as to why i should play both or if i should wait)i know the basics of bass and a bit morealso i do want to learn electric guitar but by playing accoustic i can start guitar and decide on whether i want to continue it and invest big money into it moreResolved Question: I wanna learn how to play 5 instruments, help!?
I wanna be able to play the drums, guitar, bass, piano, and harmonica. I'm advanced at guitar already and I take lessons, but what should I play next, while focusing on guitar too? I know bass would be easy to teach myself, and so would the harmonica... So lessons; drums or piano? moreVoting Question: What instrument should I take lessons for next?
I'm taking drum lesson right now, at "Sabado's school of music" and I'm in a band where I both drum and sing. I'm trying to compose all the music for every instrument, and the instruments in the band right now are guitar, bass, and drums. We're hoping to get keyboardist, then a brass instrument (like trumpet or saxophone), and when we record the guitarist overdubs so there are 2 guitars and we're going to get a second guitarist for live shows soon. I'm getting pretty advanced with drums, I know guitar chords, and I know basically how to make a bass rhythm out of root notes, but I don't know anything about single note melodies with guitar or bass. I own a drum set (but it needs to be fixed up, its kind of destroyed right now), a piano, and an acoustic guitar. Next year is my sophomore year of high school and they offer guitar lessons as an elective, so I'm taking it, but I don't know exactly how much they'll teach me and if I should get serious lessons. Bass is my favorite instrument and is really fun, but isn't as useful right now for composing especially since I don't own and can't afford a bass. When I can afford and have time for more lessons for another instrument, which instrument should I choose? Guitar --Pros: I own a guitar, I understand it, and I can compose with it --Cons: I'm already going to take a class on it next year anyway, so it may be a waste, (although I don't know how much the class will teach me) Piano --Pros: One of the best instruments to compose with, due to the grand staff and how easy it is to do both a melody and rhythm --Cons: I already have a book on piano chords and scales, lessons could be a waste Vocals --Pros: My voice could really use lessons, I'm kind of a horrible singer --Cons: They might only tell me stuff I've already learned from books and the internet Bass --Pros: My favorite instrument, really fun to play, and I'd like our songs to have more bass-melody instead of just rhythm --Cons: I don't own a bass and lessons wouldn't really be that useful Trumpet or Saxophone --Pros: This way when we get a brass instrument player, I can tell them what to play and have control over that part of every song --Cons: I don't own a trumpet or saxophone, and it isn't that useful for composing the overal song, only for composing that instrument's part Help me choose please! Sorry for the really long wall of text!I know a lot of guitar chords already. Not just the like seven essenial ones but several advanced onesand power chords, what I have trouble with is single noes and barre chords. Also, recommending thins because they'll take me farther if I play it in a band doesn't really make a difference, I already both play drums and sing in a band, I wouldn't be playing any of these other instruments in a band, I'd only use them to compose the songs for the other band members. moreVoting Question: I really want to learn to play bass guitar?
but i am not sure if i should learn to play the acoustic guitar first and then move on to the bass, or just learn bass guitar moreResolved Question: where is a good place/website to learn how to play bass guitar?
im fresh out of the batch and know nothing about the guitar besides it makes noise. i really want to learn so is there any good place i can go or find that can teach me how to play? moreResolved Question: The One-finger-per-fret Bass Technique?
Hey, I'm learning bass guitar through the book "Complete Learn to Play Bass Manual", by Stephan Richter. I've come across a section on thee "one-finger-per fret" technique and have found that my fingers can't properly stretch over 4 frets, and when I try tis somewhat uncomfortable. Pretty much wanting to know, if I got the technique right and whether or not it's meant to be uncomfortable. Some tips on Bass technique would also be appreciated moreResolved Question: 2 co founders and the other one kicks the other one out of a band for something that never happened?
Ok me and my cousin started a band we was both played the guitar until I learned the bass so I switched for the band,ok well we got a singer and had a drummer, well there was a guy I was hanging out with and he told my cousin that I was saying stuff like I wanted him to break up with his gf and lose his car......but I never said that, well he got pissed off and kicked me out of the band without asking me if I said it or not,and now the guy that told him I said that mess is now the new bass player of this band, and I think its messed up that we went this far and he kicks me out of the band that me and him created I dont think its right what do all of yall think about this situation??? moreVoting Question: Beginner Clarinet Questions?
Alright, I'm very interested in learning to play the clarinet. (I play guitar, bass and percussion seriously, as well as a bit of banjo, mandolin and piano. Just a bit of fiddling with those last three, really.) I really want to branch out a bit, and I've always been interested in the clarinet. I want to learn to play it - mainly for jazz. Here's the clarinet I was thinking of getting: http://band-orchestra.musiciansfriend.com/product/Etude-ECL100-Clarinet-Outfit?sku=463674 That one seems good - I don't want anything too crazy or expensive now, cause I don't know if I'm seriously going to play or not. If I really got into it, I'd buy a better one later. So, to anyone who plays clarinet, do you consider that one good for a beginner? Also, what would I need? I've heard of reeds and stuff like that...I don't see anything about a reed in this clarinet's information, so I don't know if that one uses them or what. Need help! Also! Do you read music for playing clarinet, or is it a lot of improv? Guitar uses pretty much no music, just tabs and chords. How is it for clarinet? I'd really appreciate the help all! Points to the best answer! Thanks! moreResolved Question: I just got brand new bass guitar, but when I play it,the E string occasionally hits the frets. What's up?
Ok,I just got a brand new Ibanez Gio bass starter pack, and I was plucking away at a few notes, and I noticed the E string occasionally hits the frets that are closer to the body of it. Am I doing something wrong,or is there something I should be concerned about? I know this sounds stupid, but I just started learning, and I really don't want there to be anything wrong with it. moreResolved Question: Should I get lessons for guitar or bass guitar?
I have decided that I want to learn BOTH guitar and bass guitar. My brother knows how to play guitar - he took lessons... So I know that he could help me. However, I've heard that bass guitar is easier to play (though I understand it's "harder to master"?). So, it isn't a matter of deciding which instrument I want to learn, because I want to learn both. But I don't have enough money to get lessons for both, so I want to know which instrument should I get lessons for? I'm leaning more towards bass lessons just because my brother has been playing for about 3 1/2 years (took lessons for two to two and a half years, I think) so he might be able to help teach me basic technique. Another idea I have is this: Take bass guitar lessons for a year, WHILE beginning to teach myself regular guitar (sorry, I don't know what to call it), so I can learn some of the basics of bass, and then switch to regular guitar lessons after about a year to a year and a half. Does this sound like a good idea, or could this end in failure? (Meaning, I suck at one/both instruments.) Again, I want to make it clear that I want to learn both instruments, so I'm not trying to "decide" which one to choose (like a lot of people on here generally seem to ask.) If anyone could give me ideas or help me to decide what I should do in this situation, that would be great. If you are confused by my question, please ask. Thank you in advance. moreVoting Question: What is the proper left hand fingering when going up the bass guitar neck on one string?
I have been searching endlessly all over the internet for this. When I was learning violin, I remember there were proper "positions" for the left hand fingers when playing up the neck of the instrument. You couldn't just use your fingers any way you felt like. And even though I feel like i have graduated from being a beginner bassist, I still can't find a way effective way to run up and down the neck without just using one or two fingers. Did anyone have any formal bass training that could help me with this? Or even if you didn't have any training but you have mastered this? Please help.To be more concise, what is the proper order of the fingers when going up the fretboard on one string. moreResolved Question: How to train ears while playing guitar (as opposed to hands)?
I'm an intermediate level bass guitar player, but this question could work for near any instrument. I can play songs and go through scales and all that, but I really feel like it's my fingers are learning shapes (as opposed to my ears learning intervals and patterns). For instance, if I changed the tuning on my guitar to say, drop D, I'd be totally screwed because it'd mess up the shapes. This also makes it difficult for me to go up and down octaves. I try closing my eyes and humming along with the notes I play but I don't feel like a strong connection is being made between where my fingers go and what note is played. Any advice? Specific exercises or tips? I appreciate the help. And yes, I'm aware a teacher would be helpful. I wish I could afford one right now. Thanks.a moreResolved Question: Want to learn Bass Guitar?
Hey guys, I'm looking to learn bass guitar, and I have several questions about how would be best on getting started: A) What's best? A 5-string bass or 4-string bass to learn on? B) What should I pay for a starting bass? I've got about 100-150 that I would like to invest in the guitar? C) Do I need an Amp right away, if I'm just learning? D) Is there a website I can self teach myself? I know how to read music (played baritone and trumpet some in High School) and think I can probably teach myself starting out. moreResolved Question: Which should I pick guitar or bass?
Which is the best instrument to play? I want to learn either bass or guitar and need some information such as which is the fastest to learn? Which if you play out of the 2 do you find the best? which do you enjoy playing? Also not many people lean towards bass therefore your more likely to get in a band or something... You always get that question how many famous bass players do you know? HOW MANY FAMOUS GUITAR PLAYERS DO YOU KNOW? exactly! I would like to learn solos and stuff but lets be honest its easy said than done, so how long would it take to get to solo standards? moreVoting Question: What's easier to learn to play? I want to learn either Bass Guitar or Electric Guitar because 3 other people in my family are learning acoustic and i wanted to be different. So I want to know the difference between the two and which one is easier to play. moreResolved Question: to learn bass should i start on an acoustic?
i heard if you want to play electric guitar you should start with acoustic and because its easier, does the same apply to bass, or is it easier to learn from a bass guitar to begin with thanks guys moreVoting Question: Why didn't they want me in their band?
OK, so my friend started this band a while back and now they've got their first gig. I admit that now I'm extremely jealous. But I could've been their bass player! I mean, that was the only missing spot, and they completely looked over me! I mean, i've only been playing for a year or so, but I've been told by a lot of people that I'm pretty good! I learn songs quickly (and I've tried my hand at writing some) and I can learn by ear. I can play guitar and violin, too. (not that that's very useful XD0 But anyway... The bassist they've got now can only read sheet music. I feel that my being a girl may have influenced some of it. I mean, I don't really want to play with them anymore, I just want to play... And it seems like finding a good band is hopeless now...I don't know, but it feels like I could be jumping to conclusions becasue now their living my dream...I think so. I mean, if I sucked, my friends would definately tell me. Haha! I hope that was it. I still can't get over the fact that their bassist can only read sheet music, though! They're a metal band and I'm open to just about anything, really. He (the leader) never actually heard me play. ^^; I asked him like 10 times on Facebook, and he never responed. moreResolved Question: am i too old to play the bass guitar?

i have had this band with my friends for about a year now. its cool we all get along and were kinda good. well we never had a bass player and my friend who has never played bass in his life volunteered. so we convinced his dad to spend like $1000 on a bass guitar and a amp. well i told my friend that only if hes serious about it he could join. i told him that only if he would learn all the metallica covers and all the songs we wrote and practice then he could be in the band. well he promissed and so he got the bass. well now he tells me he hates metallica and doesent know the songs he wont practice at home. all he does is play maple stories on his computer. well i dont know what to do. he is my best friend but i love my band do i wanna make him mad and get a new bass player or just let it go???? moreVoting Question: guitar, drums, piano, flute, and bass which is the easiest to hardest? in order please.?
i want to know because i have played flute in the 3rd and 4th grade and now i'm in the 10th grade it's okay and it not so easy but not so hard either. i might not keep on practicing on it. piano is difficult but i'm learning but i'll try to become an intermidiate the most my dad said to be an expert it takes years and years to master it not just 1 or 2. sorry not for me. bass tried might improved, drums easiest to improvise but still a beginner will improved to at least an intermidiate. guitar my life long passion.begginner i must admit i decided not to practice during freshman year and yeah i regretted that but now i'm gonna practice everyday at least 2 hours or so. i'll try to become an expert on that. also if i learn guitar than bass should be easy right? i'll practice guitar, drums and piano(once my brother gives me the copy of his piano book)every single day. also if i were able to read the sheet music for piano then drums and guitar should be easy right the thing is no sites tells me where to play the guitar on the sheet music and drums well yeah got that all i need are songs so piano is technically the easiest to play for songs since i know where to play well i will soon. how long will it take to master reading sheet music and yeah i know tabs are easier but in case if the songs are in sheet music i want to be able to play so how long? also got any songs on tabs for drums, guitar and piano or sheet music even? moreVoting Question: Questions about bass guitar?
I have struck an interest to learn to play bass guitar. (The only instrument I know how to play is the baritone horn/euphonium which I have played for about 4 years now.) I would like to get him a new one, but I dont know if I need to check the brand or make of the guitar? Or are all cords/cables pretty much the same? We got the bass from my nephew, and he didnt know because he didnt play it very long and never had to replace anything. moreResolved Question: What should I pay attention to when buying my first bass?
I'm thinking about learning to play (electric) bass guitar, so I was wondering what I should pay attention to when browsing for my first bass. I've been checking out some internetstores, and they seem to sell a variety of "beginners packs". How do I pick what's right for me? I'm reasonably tall, does that matter? In the info they are talking about the type of wood, the number of frets, the neck, the type of guitar and the weight, to name a few. It's my first bass guitar (or instrument for that matter), so does it really matter at this point? Thanks in advance for answering! moreResolved Question: What brand of bass guitar should I get?
hello, I want to learn how to play the bass guitar. I'll be playing metal/rock (idk how much of a difference that makes) I mostly want something pretty and unique looking. I dont want to spend over $250 new or used What brands are the best?I used to play violin, so a 4 string is highly highly HIGHLY prefered moreResolved Question: What's the difference between learning electric and bass guitar?
I'm learning to play an electric guitar right now (6 strings), but I would like to know if once I lean completely to play the electric, will it be easy to play the bass guitar? Is the music completely different? As in reading music, and the notes, fingering, etc? Please don't tell me the difference of "importance", or the sound effect because I know bass is lower... I'd prefer someone who plays one or both to answer, but whatever is fine. Thank you moreVoting Question: What is the best instrument for a girl in a rock band?
I have wanted to be in a rock/alternative band for so long, I can't even remember. I can sing, but I don't like to. My plan is to learn to play either guitar or bass. Drums are completely out of the question. I play french horn already (almost at a regional level) and I have several friends who play the bass. My question is: What instrument would be best for a girl in a rock band? The band will not just consist of girls, I want boys in it too, because I like them better than girls. Thank you and sorry for my english. moreResolved Question: some one please help, your opinion and advice is much apprecited.?

I am currently learning how to play the guitar and have been playing songs for a while now. However, my singing sounds very awkward. It's not horrible or anything but it's very monotone and uninteresting. Also during some particularly somewhat high notes my voice cracks. I haven't had formal singing lessons and I'm not looking to be remarkable since my main goal is to play the guitar really but I want a decent enough voice to accompany my guitar playing. My singing is an alto I think. Not a bass and a falsetto. Any tips on how to improve my voice? Or can point me to a website that can? moreVoting Question: Bass guitar or electric guitar?
A little while ago, I asked my dad if I could play bass guitar, you know, with lessons and all, and he said: "No, but I'll get you guitar lessons" He thought that if I learned guitar I'd know how to play bass... but I thought their style was pretty different, right? And how you play and all... are the notes the same? Cause the strings and all are different. My friend is already learning guitar, so I'd really rather learn bass, but if I could play bass either way then... ? >< Please help... moreResolved Question: How to begin to play bass guitar?
Do you need to buy the equipment or get lessons first or get them both at the same time? cheap options Should you learn from a school or a friend? The friend would cost less money Do you need to know musical theories? I like The Breeders(cannonball on bass) but i like alot of rock Can you practice in a dorm? What do you say when people criticize your playing?Does it take too much electricity? moreResolved Question: Is bass guitar easy to pick up?
Hi! I'm in a band and we're pretty serious about our music. Recently our bassist had to leave because of time issues. I'm the singer but I'm wondering whether I should take up the bass too seeing as we currently need somebody to play it. I've got experience with other instruments seeing as I play the violin and piano. Somebody once told me the bass is all about imagination and pretty easy to pick up if you're musical. Is it easy to learn or is it worth looking for a bass player? thanks. moreResolved Question: Is it an easy to learn bass guitar after playing the 6-string guitar?
Any tips on transition or just playing the bass in general? moreResolved Question: Is playing bass any different than rhythm guitar?
