Resolved Question: Do all guitar players like in bands, etc, know how to read music?

I took guitar lessons for about 2 years and learned some of the basics that I totally forget now lol. But, I play trombone and take music class in school so I know like the lines and spaces, etc. I play guitar tabs and I just recently joined a rock band, but I was wondering if it was a waste of time to try to get famous if I don't know how to read music for guitar? Can ALL famous guitarists read music? more

Open Question: I need some electric guitar playing tips from expert players, please help me?

Ok, im not a beginnier or a newbie, but im about intermediate. I play thrash metal, speed metal or just basic heavy metal riffs. Ive been playing guitar for about a year now. Acoustic guitar since march 09, but electric only for about 7-8 weeks. And im pretty good, just i need some tips to perfect my playing. My main problem is too much pick up sound, its not that its to sensitive, i dont think, its just ive been noticing, when my finger leaves a fret, i get the open string sound, so if im playing a fast and complex song, it sometimes sounds like a load of noise because when im trying to play the tabs for the songs, theres other noise coming from the pick ups. I know theres a technique that can help me solve this. Im practicing 1-2 hours a day. Minimum i play a day is 30 mins. Please dont tell me to learn palm muting, ive learn that, thats a pretty simple skill although it maybe similar to the technique i need to learn to stop the sound coming from the string. imagine this. Im playing a song, and when i play a note, it normally sounds fine, but when im playing a song, and one of the frets i use is on a higher string, when i play the note, and my finger comes of the string, it makes a noise as if i was performing a pull-off. How do i stop this? Its not that much of a problem if im playing quite a few notes on the same string, but on some of the songs i play, if i play a fret on a higher string, and go back down to the lower stings, i obviously take my finger off the fret on the higher sting, but it makes a pull off noise. Im sorry, im rambling and your probably like... wah, um ok. But im sure the experts will be able to give me some advice. thanks for reading. more

Voting Question: left or right handed guitar?

now i know this is a question that is asked a lot.. but i want to hear from a person who is left handed person's perspective and plays a guitar, if that's possible or a really experienced guitarist.. i am left handed btw.. i have been playing the guitar right handed now for just about 7-8 months now and i have read a lot of left handers opinion on the internet saying that if they can go back and re-learn the guitar that they would play lefty and these are people who have played for 20+ years.. this caused me to think that i should switch to a lefty while i still have the chance.. i have also read that leftys that play right handed later in experience of playing the guitar, face an obstacle that is hard to overcome, basically that they can no longer go passed that level of skill. and that kinda scared me.. now i know that a left handed guitar are much more expensive and harder to get, but cost or how hard it is to get isnt the issue here, thats why the internets here for.. and i know that i would have to carry my own guitar around if i wanted to play, since guitar players that play left are hard to find.. and i especially know that there is no such thing as a guitar book or tabs that is made for a right handed perspective, thats like saying there a book for left handers to play the piano.. and last thing i know that my left hand will have more strength and dexterity to play complex chords because thats my strong hand.. what do you guys think?? is there like a way you can tell if i should really be playing the left or right handed guitar?? besides that fact that which ever way feels the most comfortable for me?? they both feel comfortable to me.. i can pick faster with my left hand than my right even though i practiced picking with my right hand.. but i can finger pick really really good with my right hand and i cant finger pick with my left.. i clap like a right hander: left hand still and right hand doing the clapping.. i arm wrestle better with my right for some unknown reason and somewhat stronger grip as well.. i drive with my right arm steering the wheel, i cant drive with my left arm.. i open bottle tops with my right hand most of the time.. and the rest pretty much i use my left side: dribbling ball, kicking, strong punch, scissors, cutting/holding knife, writing, etc. more

Voting Question: How to read guitar tabs with solos?

Ive been playing guitar over a year, im pretty good. I can solo myself like with pentatonic scales, and i can get really fast sometimes. But when it comes to learning a solo from a guitar tab, for some reason i can't do it. Because tabs don't show the timing of a solo, if a set of notes are played fast or really slow, i can't tell and i don't know how to tell. I know the guitar solos im looking up really well too, and i should be able to play them easily. I just can't learn then when i read then from a tab, any help? more

Voting Question: should i give up learning the electric guitar ?

i picked up a electric guitar. I learned how to get the metal sound with a distortion pedal. I learned how to tune the guitar in normal position "D" and down tuned "C". I am learning a lot of chords by heart the usual open chords and also all those power chords that are so often used in metal such as D5,B5 ect.. Yet i can't play guitar. My hand is not strong enough and i don't know how to make my left hand work correctly i mute strings that should not be mutted. It's frustrating. Lots of theory and little to no play at all. I know how to read music tabs too. I know there is a device available at music store especially to build strengh in the fingers I am inversting lots of money to do tuning on my guitar new bridge, new pots ect.. I would hate not actually learning the guitar. more

Resolved Question: Star spangled banner chords?

I play an acoustic guitar, and I was curious to learn how to play it? I'm not good at reading the tabs, but I'm not sure if there is a chord version. If you know could you post the link, please? If that's not possible, I'd like an easy to do tab, that a beginner could do, and hopefully once I understand how to, I can move up from there. Remember-acoustic ;) thanks! more

Voting Question: Beginner Clarinet Questions?

Alright, I'm very interested in learning to play the clarinet. (I play guitar, bass and percussion seriously, as well as a bit of banjo, mandolin and piano. Just a bit of fiddling with those last three, really.) I really want to branch out a bit, and I've always been interested in the clarinet. I want to learn to play it - mainly for jazz. Here's the clarinet I was thinking of getting: http://band-orchestra.musiciansfriend.com/product/Etude-ECL100-Clarinet-Outfit?sku=463674 That one seems good - I don't want anything too crazy or expensive now, cause I don't know if I'm seriously going to play or not. If I really got into it, I'd buy a better one later. So, to anyone who plays clarinet, do you consider that one good for a beginner? Also, what would I need? I've heard of reeds and stuff like that...I don't see anything about a reed in this clarinet's information, so I don't know if that one uses them or what. Need help! Also! Do you read music for playing clarinet, or is it a lot of improv? Guitar uses pretty much no music, just tabs and chords. How is it for clarinet? I'd really appreciate the help all! Points to the best answer! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What are some simple songs to learn on the bass? (Perhaps include a link to some tabs/Sheets?)?

Resolved Question: Learning electric guitar techniques?

Thanks for checking this out. Finally got a new start this past Christmas and have been self teaching, plus one lesson, on learning to play. My question what is the best approach, suggestions? I read tabs and try to play certain songs, I watch countless videos on youtube about playing and try to follow along. I am working on different scales, etc. But i always wonder is there a certain order I should be trying to take this all in? There is a TON of variables to learn to make it all come together of course. And I understand practice, practice, practice is the key. Just curious if there is a "order" that would be very helpful to learn? I love rock, blues, type the most. Any suggestions, help would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Help with learning the guitar?

Well I have been playing the guitar for about a year now, and the only thing i have really go to grasps with, (i'm self taught) is how to play about 8 chords. The chords I know, I learned to play songs because I just wanted to get stuck in. Does anyone have any information for me, to help me know what i need to learn? I'm trying to learn how to play guitar. I'm self-teaching. Resolved Question: i just want to know how to read guitar tabs and play them?

im learning guitar for about 12 months ...........i just want to know how to read guitar tabs and play them? more

Voting Question: guitar, drums, piano, flute, and bass which is the easiest to hardest? in order please.?

i want to know because i have played flute in the 3rd and 4th grade and now i'm in the 10th grade it's okay and it not so easy but not so hard either. i might not keep on practicing on it. piano is difficult but i'm learning but i'll try to become an intermidiate the most my dad said to be an expert it takes years and years to master it not just 1 or 2. sorry not for me. bass tried might improved, drums easiest to improvise but still a beginner will improved to at least an intermidiate. guitar my life long passion.begginner i must admit i decided not to practice during freshman year and yeah i regretted that but now i'm gonna practice everyday at least 2 hours or so. i'll try to become an expert on that. also if i learn guitar than bass should be easy right? i'll practice guitar, drums and piano(once my brother gives me the copy of his piano book)every single day. also if i were able to read the sheet music for piano then drums and guitar should be easy right the thing is no sites tells me where to play the guitar on the sheet music and drums well yeah got that all i need are songs so piano is technically the easiest to play for songs since i know where to play well i will soon. how long will it take to master reading sheet music and yeah i know tabs are easier but in case if the songs are in sheet music i want to be able to play so how long? also got any songs on tabs for drums, guitar and piano or sheet music even? more

Voting Question: How to you know what position to play a note in on guitar?

So I'm playing some classical guitar, so I am going tab-less. However I have been going over some songs I already knew on guitar but this time without tabs, and there are times when I know that I normally would play, for example F on the 6th fret of the B instead of first fret of the E etc. But I see no indication of this, and would not have had any idea had I not already known the song. So what I am asking is: is there someway to predetermined what position to play something in or some kind of sign or is it simply read it first then find the position that is most practical to play? It just seems so inefficient to have to do this and then relearn what you just learned but in a different position. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advanceP.S I know all the notes on the fretboard already, I just need to know how you decide where to play them when reading classical notation. Sorry for the confusion more

Resolved Question: How do you read guitar tabs?

I just got a guitar yesterday I've had no previous experience with music, I got an Epiphone PR-4E Steel string Electric/Acoustic I watched the DVD and learned 3 major chords E, A, and D after that I thought chords were pretty boring and everytime I play A major my guitar buzzes. I tried searching up some tabs and I could play the first bit of Coheed and Cambria's Wake Up but when it got to the hammer on bit I just gave up and got frustrated can someone tell me how to do a hammer on and pull of in playing the song. Here's the tab CAPO IV Standard Tuning Intro/Verse- "I'm gonna ride this plane..." "I'll do anything for you..." "So leave yourself intact..." e----------------------------------------------| b------3--------------3------------------------| g---------0--------------0-----------0---------| d------------0--------------0----------0-------| a---3--------------3-------------2h5-----2-----| e----------------------------------------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b---2-------2p0---------------------------------| g-----0-----------------------------------------| d-------0---------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e-----------------------------------------------| Chorus- "The morning will come..." e-----------------------------------------------| b-------------------------3---3---3-3p0---------| g---------0---------0---------------------------| d-------0---------0-----------------------------| a-----2---------2-------------------------------| e---3---------3---------0---0---0---------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-----5---5---5---5p4-----4---4---4---4---------| g-----------------------------------------------| d-----------------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e---5---5---5---5-------5---5---5---5-----------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-------------------------3---3---3-3p0---------| g---------0---------0---------------------------| d-------0---------0-----------------------------| a-----2---------2-------------------------------| e---3---------3---------0---0---0---------------| e-----------------------------------------------| b-----5---5---5---5p4-----4---------------------| g-----------------------------------------------| d-----------------------------------------------| a-----------------------------------------------| e---5---5---5---5-------5-----------------------| I also found it really hard to stretch from fret 2 to fret 5 for the hammer on.I've learnt simple chord progressions I can go from E minor to G major and E major to A minor. The problem I'm really having is the buzzing it seems to be coming from the bridge this happens when I usually play chords but minimal buzz happens when I play an open string. I also got the first bit of Wake Up ok, I just don'r know how to do a pull off, I can hammer on from fret 2 to 5 now. How do you do a pull off in these examples; 2p0 or 4p5? I also need help with tuning when I try to play along to a song, it just doesnt sound right I have an electronic tuner but I'm thinking of getting a chromatic one. Should I take my guitar to a guitar tech to see what's causing the buzzing? more

Resolved Question: Is this a song for a beginner?

classical I had a (wonderful) teacher. With electric guitar, I've been self taught. I've played electric guitar for nearly half my life but never had a proper teacher. Anyway, there's a technique I still have yet to learn, called tapping. There's a song I really love (I have the link) and I finally decided that I would learn it. I read staff and tab of course, but I also know how to play by ear. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4fPv450O… I've gotten the whole song down except for one part: 1:07-2:25. I recognize what he's doing but i don't know how to do it. Some people have shared some links to learn how to do it. I'm just worried about my abilities as a guitar player. I feel like I should have learnt this years ago. This song seems really challenging to me but I've still gotten most of it down. I've always dreamt of being a great guitar player. Not just pretty good, or decent, but GREAT. I'm feeling a little discouraged right now because I've been playing so long and I feel like I'm not making any progress. I never give up but I don't know how to deal with feelings of discouragement. Why haven't I been making progress? I'm concerned. The guitar means the world to me. Lately some stuff has happened in my life and I've been a bit sad. The guitar has always brought me joy and it would mean so much to me and cheer me up a lot to feel like I've made progress at it and have the potential to do really well. Thanks if you can help. more

Resolved Question: To play guitar in a band, do I need to read music?

I've been playing for a few months, and originally, I thought maybe it was possible for me to learn songs by tabs and occasionally by ear. I always admired those who could listen to a song and hear which chords and notes are being played. I use sites like Ultimate-guitar and 911 tabs, I can read tabs and everything, but is that no use for a future musician. Someone told me that no one reads music anymore, everyone follows tabs. If I had a choice, I would prefer to follow my ears then sheet music, but I imagine it would be really hard if I were in a band with someone, and they had an idea for a song, and the only way they could show me, is through written music. I tried in the past to read music, but I was younger then, and so I'll give it another go now. But before I start working up a brain sweat, is this really necessary? People always complain when I miss out extra Information about myself, so here goes! I'm 14 and I want to play in a band with my sister (an awesome drummer), in the near future. I practise rock/indie/pop-punk songs, and play both lead and rhythm. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get back to me with a really good answer! Thanks for reading! more

Resolved Question: good and easy way to learn how to play electric guitar by yourself?

I have plenty of free time so I'd like to use some of it doing something productive. I have an electric guitar I bought a years ago. It's nothing special of course but I barely even touched it because I don't know how to play it. If I learn how to play well I will buy a better one. But right now this one is fine since I know nothing about guitars. What's a good way and easy way to learn how to play by yourself? I heard some people have learned how to play well by reading tabs. Resolved Question: Questions about guitar playing and reading tabs?

I just started learning guitar around August last year, however, i am not good by any means. I want to learn how to teach myself songs, since i have a grasp on the playing concepts, but I am just not very good at using them. I have been looking at tabs to start learning songs, which i know how to read more or less, but how do I know what the beat is (8th notes, 16th notes ect)? Or is that just something you learn by sound and listening to the songs? And what are all of the special letters and symbols that come with them. And does anyone have any song suggestions that are good and well known, but have nothing special like hammer-ons and such? (I like most rock songs, like disturbed and things like that, but they are all WAY to hard for me, so i would go with AC/DC or something like that. I'll save disturbed for when i get a lot better :) more

Resolved Question: beginning guitar... usual questions... i can't find a straight answer...?

hey... so i've been playing for about a week... i've read a little, learned to read tab, and im off... okay, so im not that good, but im assuming that i'll get better... I mean i doubt that anyone picked up their first guitar and learned how to play within a week... anyway, first of all, im 16... should i get rid of the 3/4 guitar and pay out for a full size? or can i get away with waiting until i can afford one? when i start getting EMA next year? second, i hear that over time, my fingers will blister, and then form calluses, or something and this will reduce the pain for a while... so i want to know how long will that take? are we talking weeks, months?.... third.... should i stop playing when my fingers get really sore, or just when the pain is still tolerable? i assume that i should carry on until it gets to the point that it hurts too much to hold th strings any longer... fourth... and im not too bothered about this, but i would like to know... im learning acoustic, mainly because i found an acoustic in my attic, but also because i can't really afford to buy an electric and an amp... i want to know, if the basics are the same... if i one day decide to play electric, will it take long to adapt? again i assume that they are pretty much the same... except for volume control, and maybe a different holding technique... sorry to be a pain in the ass with a long question..... but any help is appreciated... more

Resolved Question: What is a good song for me to learn?

I have played guitar for several years and I am pretty good at reading tab/playing power chords. I was wondering what song I should learn, my voice range is the same as Hayley Williams, Lacey Mosley, Erin McCarley and I want a song that is catchy and pretty to sing, but not too fast and more acoustic. Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: How do you learn new Guitar songs? online?

I've been playing guitar for..hm...7 months now. I know plenty of chords, can strum and tune my guitar. Can slide and you know. But the thing is I CAN'T LEARN SONGS. And I don't know why! You see, when you get a tab, then you're playing NOTES. But like all average songs, that you use chords ans strumming and stuff, i don't know HOW to KNOW how to play them. On ultimate-guitar.com, I get guitar chord sheets for different songs, and I know how to play the chords, but u see, writing can't expain stum patterns and tricks and things... How about sheet music? In sheet music, is there chords and tricks like written like notes and stuff. I wouldn't know cause I can't read sheet music, and Guitar For Dummies says that's completely OK. But they'll tell you anything since you're a dummies right? So how about all you guitar players, how do you learn new guitar songs? Do you learn online? If you do, how do you? If you don't, how do you? Thanks, DreamerI've tried youtube, but they seem to never give me everything i need! =(I already have Guitar Pro, but like i was saying, notes are easy to learn but what i need is chords and strumming things. Guitar Pro helps me with learning songs like.... Right here waitingGood ideas, but i'm talking about chords, not notes. THANKS <3 more

Resolved Question: How can I learn to play guitar well?

I have two electric guitars and an amp. Both have broken string, one th thickest the othr the smallest. I have no idea what typs of strings to buy or how to restring a guitar. I have no guitar tuner but I am able to tune them every once and a while and do whenever I can. I cannot afford lessons. No if's and's or but's. I can't. Simple as that. I am a fast learner and practice what I do know almost every day. The main thing I want to learn is how to read music on a guitar (I'd rather not learn tab). I don't use a guitar pick. I have one that I used sometimes when I started paying when my fingers got too bad to play (I still played every day, so they got pretty bad. Red and white with big blisters... I had one blister on top of another on my thub, that would randomly crack and pus or bleed. yeaaahh... TMI, i know). But now that m fingers are caloused I prefer to use them over a pick. (I've got piano fingers, so I find I'm quicker without the pick. It's not as accurate.) Any suggestions please! And thanks in advance for your answers! more

Voting Question: I have a question about sheet music and bass guitar. Can you answer?

Im getting a bass guitar in a few days for my b-day and ive been waiting a year! Well I just had a question about sheet music, its been awhile since ive been in music class but I remember the basics of reading music. To me its easier to play instruments using notes, then tabs i find tabs difficult. So if you buy a guitar song book does it have the bass notes in it too? Id assume it'd be by the bass clef lol. So if a song book doesnt have bass clef it isnt for bass guitar? Do you have to buy altogether seperate song books just for bass then regular guitar? My dad plays guitar and he has several song books i wanna learn from but most dont have a bass clef. How can you be sure when buying a book online, that it has bass notes in it? more

Voting Question: Quick question about guitar? 10 pts best answer?

So for christmas I got a guitar and today, I started playing around with it and learning my first few chords and stuff. However, I know I'm going to have to practice these chords for a long, long time, and I really want to have a few songs/riffs to play for variety. What are some really, really, easy guitar riffs that even a newbie could play? And not to be picky, but I would prefer if they were tabs rather than music theory (notes and keys style) because I can't read that way for guitar yet. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I'm new at guitar... help?

My boyfriend can play guitar like no other, and it's really starting to get me to want to start, too. I have an acoustic from Guitar Center that I've had for years, so that's not a problem. I'm left handed, so that seems to be an issue with finding books and things. I just can't get started with Jingle Bells and Mary Had A Little Lamb, songs like that just make learning to play too boring... I'm sure other people agree. So, does anyone know of websites or books that have beginners songs that weren't made for toddlers? By the way, I can only read tabs right now. Thanks!Does anyone have any song suggestions? more
