Open Question: How much is too much to ask for in a raise?

I hired in with my firm at a very low salary for my position, experience, and age. I was told that after 90 days, when my superiors have had an opportunity to examine my work product and get to know me better, I would be up for a salary increase. I am hoping to ask for about $8,000 more than I'm making, but I'm scared that it is too much to ask for. Granted, when hiring in at this job, I took a $12,000 pay cut from my previous job in another state. Still, I feel that what I was making there was a very realistic salary for my position and experience. I definitely deserve a big salary increase, but I'm nervous as to how to ask - and my review is Monday!! Any advice would be great! more

Open Question: cures for oily sensitive skin?

I take a B-12 injection (I've heard possibilities that this can cause it?) I've also stopped taking birth control last June so my husband and I can try to have a baby. As a teen and through my 20's I'd never had an acne problem and now all of a sudden I do and it's so embarrassing! I've tried a few products (even for sensitive skin) and my skin has an allergic reaction. It's very oily so I make sure to wash it twice a day but I wonder if I should wash it in the middle of the day. After a couple of hours my skin is very oily again. I use a combination/oily Oil of Olay soap and I like it. I follow it with an astringent for sensitive skin and it helps but not much. So I'm wondering if instead of targeting acne if I should try to target the oily face. Home remedies or *cheap* products would be most greatful. I'm not in a position to spend a great deal of money and I don't have insurance but I may be able to arrange a Dr.'s appointment if it seemed promising, however I'd wind up paying for the prescription on my own. Open Question: Internet Fraud (eBay)?

Long story short; In November, I paid a seller for a product they never shipped. I have the PayPal receipt, I have the USPS tracking number confirming it never shipped. I contacted eBay and PayPal and they told me to try and work it out with the seller because it may just be a misunderstanding. When she would not respond, I contacted them again, and was told it was beyond the 45 day period in which I could dispute the transaction. They basically made me go away long enough so that they wouldn't have to deal with it. The person has 10,000+ sales, so eBay is in no hurry to lose future posting fees just because a few people get ripped off now and then. So contacting the scammer, eBay, and PayPal have produced nothing. I went on to file a police report with the department in her area. The fraud detective assigned to the case has tried to contact her numerous times, but she just ignores him and doesn't return his calls, nor will she respond to me. The detective says he can do nothing about it (Really? What a great way to avoid punishment for a crime - just ignore the police and they give up!) unless I fly across the country and press charges in person. Here's my problem. I'm disabled, and physically incapable of traveling 2500 miles to meet with the magistrate in person to file charges for a warrant. Has anyone ever successfully busted one of these online thieves? Does anyone out there know of a law or other procedure so that I can bust this thief and get my money back? Or at least bust her so she can't do this to people any more? I'm praying that there's some type of justice out there for people in my position. I can't believe all she has to do is ignore the police and get away with it, and there's nothing I can do because I physically can't make the trek across the U.S.. I'd be eternally thankful if someone knows of some kind of law that will help me with this situation. If there's anyone in the internet fraud busting business, I'd love to hear from you. Update: I can't find a way to respond to an answer for clarification, so I'll add this here. The transaction was in the United States (both myself and the thief). I just got off the phone after another long conversation with their "customer service". They continue to insist that they will not accept any kind of dispute because I did not file one within 45 days, even though eBay themselves told me after a month to continue trying to contact the seller (who just ignores communication and continues selling), which stalled me just long enough to cross the 45 day period. I tried explaining this to the CS rep, but he just kept repeating the same thing. No disputes after 45 days, even though they told me themselves to go try and work it out with the seller first. Having the fraud detective from the thief's city contact them will change nothing. Payment was made via PayPal with funds already in the account (there's no direct credit or debit transaction I can dispute with my bank). PayPal gave me the exact same story. No disputes accepted after 45 days, even though they too told me to continue trying to work with the seller, the same trick eBay pulled to stall long enough that they don't have to do anything now. This is ridiculous. There has to be some kind of legal action i can take against this person since eBay and PayPal refuse to show any integrity whatsoever. Again, I'm disabled, and can't travel the length of the country to her city to press charges. Please, if anyone out there knows of a legal procedure that can get this resolved, I'm dying to know. eBay, PayPal, and the local police in her area all basically say their hands are tied.Liz: The seller printed a label electronically, but never shipped the parcel, confirmed by the track# and USPS by phone. The seller has the Power Seller status with over 10,000 feedback, something like 99.6% good or whatever. She responded only once - after my first inquiry after a month - saying she'd have to "find another one", inadvertently admitting she sold something she didn't have. Hasn't responded to me since, and is ignoring the detective in her town I filed the case with. He says he can't do anything more unless I travel there, which isn't possible due to my disability. I gave negative feedback but it's lost in the dozens of sales a day and likely won't be noticed, plus it doesn't return the stolen money or bust the thief. I'm not sure what I can do with BBB and CPA; the 45 day dispute limit is in eBay and PayPal's terms, I just foolishly believed they were extending it while I waited for a response from the seller. Is there a quick way to merge two PositionLists? These are data structures PositionLists<Entry<E,K>> The problem I have is that I have to methods which both can addFirst, addLast, or AddBefore/AddAfter given element in a positionList. But I need them both in increasing order, and to do this, I have to use addFirst for the first method and addLast for the second (because in the first, i'm traversing max to min, in the second, im going min to max). So I can't toss the L into both, because then the final product won't be increasing. So is there an easy way to just merge the two separately increasing lists? more

Open Question: QUIT SPAMMING MY QUESTION?

Ok, I started this new job today, I was all hyped about it. I had a few other offers on the table and decided for the place I started at today because they sounded like the best place for future opportunities. They said they were interested in my past SAP experience and other inventory tracing software experience and it was something they were apparently going to implement in their facility this year and basically told me they were wanting me and my experience to help make their transition easier. Well it's something I like doing, working in a warehouse setting and having the pressure of helping getting this set up. SO I accepted and withdrew from the other positions that I had offers for. So today I go into the orientation, there was a few of us there. Everyone was told where they were going to be placed and they got to me and said "we're not sure what we're doing with you?" I said "what do you mean? I was under the impression I was wanted for SAP." She proceeded to tell me that they scraped that idea a few months ago. Anyway there are 3 different HR people. 1 does initial phone and in person interviews. This is the person that did all the yapping about SAP and how they wanted me to help implement it. Then there is another that takes care of the day to day HR stuff. Then there is one that takes care of new employee orientations. So anyway I'm PISSED by this point, here I had already wasted 4 hours in an 8 hour orientation and NOW I get told that what I was wanted for wasn't even going to be implemented. So I figured this lady must be mistaken, she sent us for a break and I asked her if she could go down to the office and find out what was going on. Anyway we come back and she tells me that I must have misunderstood something. I told her that I couldn't have misunderstood anything and asked to see the other HR person. She told me that he had just left for the day and told me to come back tomorrow and they would find something for me on the production floor. SO NOW I'M REALLY PISSED by this point. I had already called the other places and withdrew as I didn't want to hold anyone else up that may have been waiting to hear back for a job. Anyway I know what I heard, I know what I was told I was wanted for and now I feel like I have just been kicked 5 steps back. And the hours they want me for make it virtually impossible to go out looking for anything else as my hours are from 8am - 5pm I'm thinking of just calling in and quitting, I definately have no trust for this company now, I was present for a meeting that the company held at the end of the day with the Plant Manager and I have never seen in my life a bunch of spoiled brats. The plant is unionized, and the plant manager made the announcement that he had just secured a contract for an additional 600k cases of product which is alot. likely 6 months worth of over time anyway. Well then the perverbial **** hit the fan. People were bitching and screaming "damn overtime at this time of year" I don't know how to explain it. I'd never seen something like that before. You had to be there I guess. I know jobs are scarce, but I can't get over the distrust I have for this company already and then the employees on the floor acting the way they were. What would any of you do if presented with a situation like this? I'm seriously considering quitting. I just can't stand to throw all my education and training away for a position I don't want. And no I'm not saying the position is beneath me. I just spent alot of years on my education and additional training to have the experience I have. I just don't want it to go to waste. more

Voting Question: How to handle this ? Should I resign ?

I have started working for this company for one week. The problem now is i'm thinking of quiting from the position. The salary they pay is slightly lower (while the working hour is xtra one hour longer than normal company offered and during my probation period they wont pay any extra. Since my second day of training i encounter the staffs there are trying to bully me. I'm from totally different industry and i know that i need to catch up. There was this senior keep on complaining that i'm slow in catching up and don't talk much / hardly answer question during training session. I think it goes the same what if i ask her (from medical background) to use Auto CAD in a day and expect her to remember all the calculation. Can she make it ? Of course everything need time. Next, the staffs there aren't friendly at all, even my manager also didn't fix my lunch time (rotate accordingly) and i have to ask her by myself. There's also few staff that what i greet then or smile at them they pretend nothing happen. On my third day, one staff suddenly ask me whether i had ever being bullied by ex-colleague before ? Another staff even come and tell me that if they couldn't find customer profile she will kill me ? What if it's other staff misplace the customer profile? I also even heard someone talking at pantry said that they sure i'll quit. This is only my first week and so many bad experience i have encounter. I'm willing to learn (i'm from totally different background) and i also willing to take time memorize all the product code. I don't mind lower salary with longer working hours (even have to work on weekend) but the staffs there already make me feel uncomfortable and i could see office politics there. May be i'm very quiet person that's why they dint talk to me but i feel even the superior also treat me unfair. It's my first week, should i quit ? I work in few places before, but i never encounter anything like this during first few weeks. This company expect me to learn everything by myself and expect me to be independent in one month. My fiance works A LOT. He owns his own business and has produced his own product and is doing so well, I could not be more proud of him. Now my mom declared that she hates him and swears that he is disrespecting me. Resolved Question: Why is it that similar job experience doesn't seem to "count" with more "industrial" jobs?

In comparing: Say you're looking for a warehouse job. You have experience working in a retail warehouse where they use an order picker/forklift, or simply do everything with hand trucks. You do a lot of lifting of heavy boxes/objects, and also do a lot of the things they do in larger, more "industrious" warehouses. Then you try to use that experience to get a job in another warehouse...say, an industrial warehouse like Home Depot (which is also Retail, of course)...or in some other warehouse that works with different products like pipes, etc. Obviously I can see why they would want someone who had worked with the specific product before, because there is a big difference between pipes and boxes. But in the same way, it's sort of the same thing...a warehouse is a warehouse still. Things get moved around, they get received and they get shipped. Yet because that experience that you have seems "Retail"...you won't even get a chance in a real warehouse. Then there's Clerical/Administrative. Say you worked a Retail position within a print center where you answered phones all day, did face to face sales orders for jobs, typed a lot on the computer to enter customer information, etc. This is equivalent or possibly more than what is done in most Clerical/Administrative office settings...it's just not tucked away in an office, and is right in the middle of all of the hustle and bustle. Yet you most likely won't get a job in an actual office from that experience. Why is this? Sure, an office is a little bit different environment...but wouldn't the person who did all of the face-to-face customer service and multitasking in retail do a better job than the person who knows nothing but an office and usually isn't multitasking and tucked away in their corner? Why are so many job fields so hard to get into, with experience that is equivalent to or more than the job being offered? I'm not referring to how hard it is to get a job - I know the economy is bad now. I'm just wondering why it's so hard to get anything in similar job fields. more

So I may just be overly ambitious, but I've worked at two fortune 50 companies in digital media since I graduated undergrad. I was poached from the second of these by another massive company and have been a manager/senior manager of product development for the last three years, working alongside my boss (Sr. Director) to create new ideas, products and maintain and educate employees who need to interface with what we set up. I am a few months away from finishing my MBA and if some of you have done your math, I'm in my mid-late 20's. Lately, I've applied to a few companies, similar to my current employer, for essentially the job my boss has, director of product/marketing. Although during interviews I do exceptionally well, the beginning is always rocky because I get asked "You know this is a DIRECTOR level position right?" before taking the time to get to know that I have good experience and education. It seems I'm missing an intangible part of this. My question is, is this just like a 'you need 10 years experience' situation? Does being ambitious and understanding your field not mean much? The Brokenness of Belgium In the novel Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad, the main character, Marlow goes from a civilized European world to the jungle of Africa, where he discovers many evils that were non-existent at his home in Belgium. Conrad makes many references to brokenness throughout the novel, both the brokenness of Africa and the Belgians. The motif of brokenness reveals to the reader that Africa appears to be broken, but has redeeming qualities; however, in reality the Belgians are more broken. After going from England to the Congo in Africa, Marlow realizes Africa is a place of brokenness. Marlow becomes aware of this when he sees a Swedish man who has hanged himself on the side of the road. “The other day I took up a man who hanged himself on the road. He was a Swede too. Hanged himself! Why, in God’s name!” (Conrad 15). This being one of Marlow’s first encounters of Africa does not give Marlow good thoughts about the surrounding jungle. Africa changed negatively Marlow and Kurtz. In the beginning of the novella, Kurtz is a prestigious business man in Europe and in the end, he becomes a man out for money and power, doing whatever is necessary to achieve wealth. Likewise, in the beginning of the novella, Marlow is opposed to lying in all forms; however, Marlow’s last scene of the book depicts him lying to the intended about Kurtz’s last words of life. “‘His last word—to live with,’ she insisted. ‘Don’t you understand I loved him—I loved him—I loved him.’ ‘I pulled myself together and spoke slowly. The last word he pronounced was—your name’” (Conrad 76-77). Lying is never good; however, Marlow might have lied for the good of the intended, because she devoted her entire life being faithful to Kurtz, while Kurtz was sleeping around and being dishonest. Knowing this knowledge, the intended would have been broken. The Belgians, in many ways were far more broken and corrupt than Africa. A Belgian hut caught fire and burned to the ground. The Belgians are so corrupt they had to punish someone for this even if the one receiving punishment is innocent. “A nigger was being beaten near by. They said he had caused the fire in some way; be that as it may, he was screeching most horribly. I saw him later on for several days sitting in a bit of shad looking very sick and trying to recover himself” (Conrad 23). The brokenness of the white men is shown when they beat a most likely innocent black man. Plotting to kill a man over worldly values is corrupt and broken. “I was broad awake by this time but, lying perfectly at ease, remained still, having no inducement to change my position. ‘How did that ivory come all this way?’ growled the elder man who seemed very vexed. The helmsman and Marlow were safe inside the boat, but the helmsman opens the window to try to shoot an African. The moment the window is opened, a spear comes flying though, piercing his side. Minutes later the helmsman is dead. Having seen all this happen in front of him, Marlow’s heart is broken. When the fighting subsides, Marlow throws the corpse overboard; a new pair of shoes is still on the body. However, my search for ExpressCard/54/34 products has turned up very little. I really want to take advantage of this slot since my 2yo laptop is starting to show early signs of aging.
