Resolved Question: Does my first chapter make you want to read chapter two?

Chapter 1 The voice of a young man on the hospital speaker alerted the doctors that I needed medical assistance right away. “Code blue room 305. Code blue room 305.” I was lying on a patient’s bed, facing the ceiling. It didn’t take me long to realize something was wrong. I couldn’t move a thing on my body except for my eyes, I was paralyzed. The cardiogram next to me made an annoying, continuous beep indicating that I was lifeless. Strange. How did I end up in this place? And why the hell am I even here? I struggled for an answer in my head trying to remember any event that had taken place before this, but my memory was no help to me. None of this made sense. Nothing explained itself. I heard the door slam against the wall, and two male doctors, dressed in their long coats that covered them almost fully, bolted through the entryway. But for some reason their presence didn’t make me feel any safer. With all this shit going on at once, nothing can make me feel hopeful. I need to ask these guys a thousand questions, but my voice isn’t flowing as I try to speak. Damn. One of the doctors was panicking. “He’s not breathing and has no pulse.” What? This isn’t right, but somehow it’s still happening. And here I was doubting the cardiogram, thinking is was just malfunctioning. Or is it really happening? Maybe this is some kind of sick joke behind some psychotic bastards. Maybe I’ve been drugged and thrown into this shit-hole just to amuse someone. Maybe. My situation only got worst when I saw a figure behind the doctor standing in front of me. I knew this was a new threat. The doctor in front of me moved to the right side of my bed and shook me. “Mr. Grace, can you hear me?” “What an idiot. Do I look alive to you?” I thought to myself. The change in position of the idiot allowed me to see the figure, I assumed it was a man. He was facing down, wearing a black, tattered hoodie with the hood on his head and his hands in the pockets of his old, faded black jeans. I wanted to scream to the doctors to look behind them. Couldn’t they see him too?! I tried to make a sound, a movement, any movement just to get their attention. Can’t they see me eyes moving? The very few things I tried failed to catch their attention. The lights flickered. Off - on…off - on…off - on, off - on …off - on. It didn’t seem to distract the doctors at all. They were getting the defibrillator ready so they can shock my heart awake. But their plans were interrupted when the lights went out. For the time being, everything was dark. The night went dead silent. Was I dead already? Then the lights came back on, only much dimmer this time, like a white lamp that lit the room hanging upside down from the ceiling. There was no sign of the doctors anymore. They vanished. The man wasn’t looking down anymore. His ashen eyes were locked on mine, it created an eerie feeling inside me. His skin was as awfully pallid as a corpse’s. He whispered my name, his voice dry and screechy. “Nathan…” I can see his cold breath. Who is he? And why is he here? He put on a grin, making his rotted teeth visible. I watched him as he slowly stretched out his arm towards me. His bloody hand was holding a heart, still beating while he grasped it. I wonder where he got that from? But the sight put my chest in pain, and my mouth starting bleeding. With my reaction I knew it wasn’t any random object at his hold. It was a heart, of course. My heart. more

Resolved Question: Uganda & sodomy laws: Is it legitimate for a government to prohibit specific sexual acts for medical rather...?

......than religious reasons? {The Uganda controversy led to my thinking about the question but this is NOT a description of the circumstances in Uganda nor the motivation of the Ugandan government. My primary question and the elaboration below if purely theoretical and not at all restricted to Uganda or some specific place.} That is, while most people denounce the idea of governmental laws existing purely for religious reasons, what about laws which may prohibit specific sexual acts for medical and public health reasons? For example, on what basis (other than your personal opinion or preference) is it inherently wrong for a government to ban a some corporeal act which is not necessary for maintaining human life or reproducing it? (I define that caveat to accept the obvious fact that eating and heterosexual sex are biological functions which entail risks of spreading disease but it wouldn't make sense for a government to ban them for public health reasons because they entail undeniable benefits which are required by our species for survival.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OPTIONAL EXAMPLE: LAWS PROHIBITING ANAL SEX FOR MEDICAL REASONS So specifically, as an example, what about a government enacting a law prohibiting anal sex? (For the sake of this theoretical scenario, whether hetereosexual or homosexual couples are involved is immaterial.) After all, the medical literature is full of attestation of the high levels of health risks -- and dangers to the public health -- associated with anal sex. And as former Surgeon General Everett Koop used to say when alerting the American public to the AIDS epidemic, "An anus is not a vagina and is not engineered to be used as one. The physical injury risks in the form of micro-tears as well as the immunological hazards play a major role in AIDS and hepatitis transmission." So while many people would agree that religious prohibitions alone are not sufficient reason for governmental laws banning specific sexual acts, on what basis would it not be appropriate for a government with the public health interest as a motivation to prohibit a specific sexual act linked to disease transmission if that act is not required for survival of the human species? [REMINDER: This is an international forum so the U.S. Constitution is not the final arbiter of truth or morality nor an international legal standard?]=========================== ONCE AGAIN: A law against anal sex is just one example. My question is about the LEGITIMACY of legislating sexual conduct for public health reasons. ON WHAT BASIS SHOULD IT BE CONSIDERED WRONG OR INADVISABLE?--------------------------------------------- "Pure sophistry" Sounds like someone needs to acquire a dictionary. For something to be SOPHISTRY, it must be an argument. I asked a question. I haven't expressed my personal opinion on the subject, either for or against any particular argument. I simply asked for the BASIS of some argument(s) against such legislation. (People on R&S are easily threatened when asked to explain their thinking. The paranoia is rampant. It is much easier for many to simply emote, resort to name-calling, and evade rational thought and discourse.) more

Resolved Question: what do you think of my narrative essay?

it was for english, its kinda long, constructive criticism please, or bash i don't really care. ill compare your feedback to my mark ;). tell me what you think note: i tried to be historically accurate XD explosions thundered off in the distance lighting up the sky followed by sporatic rifle fire. It was dusk now. Sevastian crawled carefully through the bramble of bristly, jagged branches. The year was 1943, The Germans operation to eliminate the threat of the Soviet Union had all but failed. Spread out too thin over a wide front against the will and determination of the Soviets. The Soviet Union was now on the offensive and pushing deep into German occupied territory. Sevastian had enlisted and trained to be a sniper in the infantry, he had spent the past 16 year hunting, and had considered himself adept and qaulified for the position. So far his career was going well and had earned many kills. Earlier that day his company of infantry and 2 other tank sqauds had assaulted the city of Poltava, Ukrain. They had been unsuccesful and much of the company was either killed or seperated, Sevastian was no exception. He had never found himself alone in the wilderness before and he knew a German counterattack would be inevitable and chances are they would find him along the way. Quietly moving through the forest grasping his rifle, he was alert and ready to fire if needed. The metal on the bolt of his Mosin-Nagant rifle was cold on his hands, winter was only a month away. The wind began to sway the trees restlessly and his trench coat was whipping around his legs. Night was fast approaching. He arrived at the bottom of a jagged mountain with a visible peak. He figured he could hide there till either the Soviets attacked with second wave or until the Germans follow through with a counterattack, or atleast to help figure out where he is. Sevastian slung his rifle on his back and began to climb. He was tired and was beginning to to lose awareness of his surroundings. About halfway up he went to grab onto a rock and it slowing slid out of position and seemed to leap down to the ground below. Sevastian fell to a ledge 2 meters below, he felt a thick pain in his left shoulder and came to the conclusion that he could finish scaling the mountain. Thats when he realised the two sentries scouting thoroughly through the forest. he was clearly visible on the ledge he was sitting on and knew they would find him if he tried to climb down and escape. Sevastian chambered a bullet into his rifle with precision. He peered through the iron sights and took time to line them perfectly, in his mind he knew when the trigger was pulled one of the scouts would be instantly killed. The night had gotten windier, still he was sure of his aim. Sevastian lightly squeezed the trigger, the sound echoed over the forest. Sevastian saw one scout on the ground rolling in pain and the other had dissapeared, he was searching for him. He then began to realize how much trouble he really was in. The scout screaming and the gun shot would have been enough to alert others in the area. He heard someone below him. The other scout was examining the mountain he was on. Sevastian studied the distance to the ground. His plan was to land on the scout. If he landed right with his bayonet knife in hand he could kill the scout. Sevastian rolled off the cliff landing exactly where he wanted to. The scout was stunned and supprised that a Soviet soldier had jumped on him. Sevastian quickly raised his knife hand and plunged it the Germans neck. The man was terrified and grabbed out to Sevastian gasping for air. Sevastian stared at him in disbelief never had he seen hand to hand combat and now he was witnessing a man who only wished to live, seeing his eyes pleading. He couldn't take it anymore. Sevastian ripped the knife out of his neck and the scout died. the other scout was still rolling in pain and Sevastian went to investigate him. The man was turning pale. He knew he should kill him now but he couldn't risk another gunshot. He would have to use his knife again. He couldn't do it and he couldn't leave him there to die. Sevastian ripped off a sleeve from his trench coat and rapped it around the leg wound of the scout. He lifted him up and began carrying him. He could see in the mans eyes that he was fading but he had to atleast make an effort to save him, he couldn't watch someone die again knowing he was responsible. After 2 hours of wondering he found a town that had been liberated by the Soviets. He left the scout on the outskirts and ran in to get medical supplies. When he returned he found that the scout he had tried to escape but failed he had fallen asleep meters away from his original position. Sevastian woke him up patched his leg and gave him to sticks he found for him to use as crutches. While in the town he learned of a massive Soviet attack planned for Poltava in the morning. He gave the man a map and showed him where they were, he told them t more

Voting Question: I have movement disorders, possible PTSD. HELP!!?

I've had movement disorders since I was a young child, but I've never been formally diagnosed. I am a young man now, and I've been researching movement disorders for a while. When I was a kid my dad thought I had torticolis, but that's not it, as my head isn't stuck in the same position. Every time that I would twitch around him he would scream "TORTICOLIS!!" really loudly and wave his hand in my face. This, of course, made my condition worse. I was reading about Brian Wilson of "The Beach Boys" and, via the power of the internet, was lead to an article on Dyskinesia, which is an involuntary movement disorder. However, looking into it I found that it was either hereditary or via the effects of anti-psychotics over an extended period of time. And none of the rest of my family has it, and I have never taken anti-psychotics. I believe that I have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, from a rather abusive and terrifying childhood. My parents divorced when I was eight, and I lived with my mother about 60% of the time, whilst I was with my dad the other 40%. He was often neglectful and somewhat alcoholic. He also did not have much money, and as such I got ridiculed in school until I was in ninth or tenth grade, when I began getting into fights with those that bullied me. But that's not my point; my point is that my dad was asleep a good portion of the time I saw him, or drinking. Not to the extent of being drunk, but about 2 bottles of wine a day, at his height. He also put me down, but not often. My mother was even more abusive; she used to call me a moron and an idiot when I got bad grades in math and science. But particularly math. I remember this one time, when I was 12 or 13, she told me that she had wanted an abortion. Another time she punched me a few times and bit me, then chased me out of the house. I lived with my dad for a few days after that. She often liked to kick me out, to, when I was just a young kid; no more than 10 or 11. She'd drive me to my dad's house and tell me the entire time that we drove that she would never come back for me and that she hated me, and so on and so forth. Then she would threaten to call social services and take away my dad's meager custody of me, because he rarely paid child support. I was suicidally depressed when I was 12, and it progressed into my teenage years. When I was 13 or 14 I found that, on average, I was thinking of committing suicide every ten minutes. I tried about four times when I was 15, and my dad knew of it, and often told me to see a counselor. But I never did, because I have a deep mistrust of them. I told him this and he would try to convince me for five or ten minutes, then he'd tell me that "it was my problem and that I shouldn't be as worked up over an imagined distrust". Then he'd go and drink for a bit. I've found that I'm hyper-alert, and when somebody drops a book or a fire alarm goes off I jump out of my seat and scream. Like, it takes over me for a few seconds. Or if I get attacked and fight like a rabid dog and loose control of myself. I'm constantly looking around and find myself looking for make-shift weapons every time that I enter a situation I feel threatened in. I also look at people from the corners of my eyes and keep a close watch on those that I see as possible threats to me. Because I guess this is what I did to get through living with my parents. But back to my earlier point, I have movement disorders where I move my head in awkward positions and make odd gestures with my mouth, such as grimacing or sticking my tongue out like Gene Simmons when I laugh a lot. Could this be a result of stress, and my horrible childhood, or something medical? more

Resolved Question: What medical use does marijuana really have?

I hate drugs that affect mental state. My friend's dad was smoking pot when he decided to jump into a shallow pool before checking it's depth and now he's paralyzed for life. I like being fully alert, aware, and able at all times- Especially in this day and age when fires, gunshots, break-ins and just plain accidents can happen so easily at any given moment. Never understood the allure of pot. I've smoked it a couple of times just so I wouldn't come off as rude ( a lot of people take it personally when you wont to smoke with them), and all it did was make my reactions slower which is never a good thing. And smoking it never got rid of my chronic ever-present knee pain even for a second. I can't possibly see the medical benefit. more

Resolved Question: Do women have a tendency to hold grudges?

Personally, I'll admit that I do hold grudges... but I wouldn't go *this* far... "A nurse in the US killed a plastic surgery patient she had a 30-year grudge against because she stole her boyfriend when they were at school, prosecutors have said. Sandra Joyner's death after a mini-facelift had been attributed to medical error. But five years later, nurse anaesthetist Sally Hill has been charged with poisoning her with a powerful painkiller. Authorities said witnesses remembered Ms Hill, 50, saying she believed Ms Joyner, 45, had stolen her boyfriend when the pair were students at Olympic high school in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ms Joyner went to see Peter Tucker in 2001 for the operation. It was a success but as she lay in the recovery room she went into respiratory arrest and died several days later. Detective Chuck Henson told a court last month he believed Ms Hill poisoned Ms Joyner and turned off an alarm that could have alerted other nurses to her condition. A malpractice lawsuit against the plastic surgeon and Ms Hill filed by Ms Joyner's family was settled confidentially in 2003. Ms Hill, who is in custody without bail on first-degree murder charges, denies the claims." http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2006/oct/28/rachelwilliams.mainsectionBenino, are you talking about Countess Elisabeth Bathory? She bathed in virgin village girls blood to look younger, not because she held grudges against these girls. I don't know about Hitler, but Stalin sent my family to the gulags in Siberia during WWII. He didn't do because he held a grudge, he did it because he accused people of being traitors, collaborating with enemies, etc. more

Resolved Question: How is a normal kitty's belly supposed to feel vs. FIP?

Hello, please read the whole thing before answering, though I realize it's a lot. I adopted a 10 month old kitten about a week ago, and admittedly, we've been giving him lots of treats (about 5 of Pounce and 10 of Whiskas Temptations daily with 1/2 cup of dry food) His stomach area is feeling a bit mushier than when I first got him, and he seems to lie down a lot. I know that he used to have a whole garage to run around in for exercise at the foster home, so it may be the smaller amount of exercise he gets here. If I throw a toy, he'll chase after it if he's not just gotten up from a nap. Is it FIP? I'm being paranoid because my last kitten died last year at 8 months after suffering from a wet case of FIP, and I want to be sure that this one is healthy. I know that coronavirus is common and easily contagious, especially in environments that hold five or more cats. My current kitty, AJ, was at a local animal shelter, then at a foster rescue home before becoming an only pet at my house, so I'm statistically pretty sure he has been exposed to coronavirus some time before coming into my care. I also know that only 5% or so of those infected with coronavirus develop FIP, but like I said, I really want to be sure. Is the mushy feeling normal/is it just normal weight gain? My first kitten was the one with FIP, so I really don't know how a normal cat's is supposed to feel. I'm just afraid it'll be external fluid again, so it'd be a great help for cat owners to tell me how a healthy cat's abdomen/stomach area and spine are supposed to feel. Also, is it normal for a cat to laze around a lot? So far, his eyes are alert and attentive. His stomach is mushy, gushy, however you would describe it, but not enough to surpass the ribcage at all. the softness is below the ribcage, not pushing up against it. You can feel his spine only if you really feel for it. I know I'm describing what seems to be an obvious picture of health, even to me, but I just want to make sure. If anyone has lost a cat to FIP, they would know that the horrible symptoms and actions of the sick cat--the fluid build up, the watery jiggle of the abdomen/stomach when you lightly tap it, the extreme lethargy, the clinginess--can be subtle at first. Whether it's an actual medical answer, or a description of your own normal healthy cat, anything would help. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Should I be going to the E.R. or wait this out over the weekend and alert the dr.?

I know, it's silly to ask a question like this on here. My medical card's hotline is closed for the night and if i called the E.R. they would never give me a straight answer. So any how, the last day or so, i've been having these aches in my lungs. Only my lungs. Both of them ache terribly and it ranges from a dull ache to a severe stabbing sensation to where i have to sit still for half a minute and then i'm okay. I can walk just fine without, no shortness of breath. My pulse and everything else is right where it should be. I do smoke, in the process of quitting, down to half a pack a day. I have diabetes. i'm in my early 20's. I listed that incase it may help. I do believe i have asthma although it wasn't diagnosed. I say that simply because my pets throw me into an asthma attack if i have to bathe, clean the litter, or in the case of the guinea pigs, hold them. But simply i just want to know if i should wait it out or go to the E.R. i don't want to waste their time, and i don't want to wake someone out of bed just bc my lungs are aching. This has done this before in the last year more

Resolved Question: My newborn pees a lot?

Hey all, My almost 5 week old is in transition from breast to bottle, primarily now on formula (it was for medical reasons with my wife). I've noticed in the last week or two that he goes through a ton of diapers, sometimes 3 in an hour. I'd say 30-40 a day, mostly pee with one or two poops. I'm waiting on the nurses line to call back but thought i'd see if anyone had thoughts. Sometimes it seems to hurt him to pee but he could just be being fussy. I've heard urinary tract infections cause them to pee a lot and hurt when it pees but the hurt isn't all the time, just when he's awake and alert. He doesn't fuss when he has a wet diaper and he's sleeping. Any thoughts/insights would be most appreciated!Update: to answer some of the questions i'd say 10-15 are heavy pees, the rest just light. He doesn't have a fever so I'm not sure about the UTI. I've got a call into the nurses line to get with my dr but thanks to everyone for the great responses. sometimes it just helps to hear it from those that have been through it before (he's our first)! more

Resolved Question: Do you agree with this Guardian article that IPCC and UK Dfid are wrong to link malaria with global warming?

<< this question has a couple of long quotes, but they are relevant and worth reading in full >> An article in today's Guardian Environment Network criticises the UK's Department for International Development, and the IPCC, for linking malaria with climate change. They write: ""A recent press release from the UK Department for International Development (DFID) suggested that millions more people in Kenya are susceptible to malaria as a result of mosquitoes colonising higher ground as global temperatures rise. ('New evidence of a link between climate change and malaria', 30.12.09 – see below). The press release was extensively covered in UK newspapers and elsewhere. Simple analysis shows that the claims of the press release are almost entirely without foundation. The battle against the severe threat from climate change is impeded, not helped, by government departments issuing alarmist and exaggerated alerts based on poor science."" -------------------------------------- Which is quite true. What is really shocking is what The Guardian then uncovered by a bit of dogged research into the "scientific papers" that the government cited in support of its claims. You won't believe this next bit, but it illustrates how biased even government bodies have become: ----------------------------------- "" However the story that substantial increases in malaria will inevitably follow rising temperatures will not go away and DFID's recent press release is another example. The document claims that 'new research' in the highland areas around Mt Kenya has shown strong links between increasing temperatures and malaria incidence. When I asked for a copy of the scientific papers to back up this assertion, DFID said it was unable to provide this 'new research', stating instead that the press release was based on 'a cumulation of several studies over the past few years'. Three papers were attached to this surprising response from DFID. The press release asserted that temperatures on the western side of Mt Kenya had risen two degrees Celsius in twenty years, prompting epidemics of malaria, but these research papers actually showed a much smaller increase. The specific claim that the Mt Kenya area has recently become vulnerable to malaria was backed up by interview data of a few years ago from a small number of families who declared a total of eight cases of malaria in the past five years compared to only three in the period of five to ten years ago. No medical analysis appears to have been carried out to determine whether the disease recorded was or was not malaria. Neither was any attempt apparently made to adjust for deficiencies in memory of events ten years ago. What about the physical evidence of mosquitoes? The scientific papers sent to me by DFID write of finding a total of two mosquito larvae in pools on high ground near Mt Kenya. These larvae produced a total of 23 insects when incubated in a laboratory. The quality of this finding is never questioned. Most importantly, the background research papers do fully acknowledge that other events in the geographic areas under study, such as deforestation or increased pooling of stagnant water as a result of land use changes, could well have been the primary cause of any growth in the number of mosquitos and of malaria, not climate change. But these possibilities are unmentioned in the DFID press release."" ~ quite incredible, and a great bit of investigative reporting by The Guardian. What do you think? Resolved Question: Did my child have a seizure? he's three and has had no medical problems.?

I actually wasnt there, my grandmother was watching him. She said he was alert one minute, then the next she saw his head go back and his eyes shut as if he was asleep (he has never fallen asleep that quick or deep). She held him, shook him and he wouldnt come to all the way, he was a little alert, but not much. A few seconds later he finally was awake, and seemed completely normal. We had the EMT come out and check him, they said everything looked normal. I just have been reading alot to know what to expect if this happens again. Not sure if it may have been a seizure. more

Resolved Question: Your advice please? Ovulation?

OMG OMG OMG. I have taken POKs everyday for 12 ½ months and NEVER for a positive. I Have had very irregular periods since I was 11 years old, and after coming off of birth control last November (for only 2 months) Thery were really messed up. I’ve only had 4 last year. My last AS was on November 30th, 2009 and lasted until December 17th, 200. I do not have or nor I ever had STD. I was finally going to seek medical help this month (switched to my DH medical and coverage didn’t start until 1/1/2010) Anyway ALERT SORRY IF TMI When I woke up the morning I first took my temp (97.52) Then went to use the restroom. While going I felt a little cramping, and just knew when I wiped it was going to be a little pink (I was kind of excited b/c when you don’t have a AF you don’t ovulate so I was kind of excited) When I wipes there was no pink. HOWEVER there was some clear stretchy discharge I’ve NEVER seen before. It stretched about a inch, maybe a little less. WAS THIS EWCM??? I also had dull cramps on my left side for a few hours after FMU I went to the bathroom this afternoon I didn’t see anymore. I just went to the bathroom again (after a afternoon nap) and this time when I wiped there was a little more than earlier and did indeed stretch more. Is this EWCM? Could I finally be ovulating? Ohhhh I hope so. I have been looking for OB GYN’s and I was finally about to set an apt for next week or the week after…. Any opinion is greatly appreciated. Also im out of OPKs I usually buy them in bulk and decided not to this month. Thursday temp was 97.25 Friday's- 97.28 Todays 97.52 more

Voting Question: What is the correct solution?

Before I ask this question please understand that I did try to do my best for this situation. My brother has a german shepherd/boxer mix adult dog who's is probably 2 or 3 yrs old. He has left him in the care of my father who is in his mid 70's. My brother does buy the dog food , but my dad is the one who cares for him. My dad is not getting around as easily as he used too and some days the poor dog doesn't eat unless one of my nephews comes and visits since my dad lives alone, I recently went for a visit and i was disgusted at the condition of the poor dog, he's skinny and has some sort of skin condition . He is chained up and the chain isn't very long so he has to step and sleep in his own feces. I told my brother to take the dog to the animal shelter because my dad can not take care of him. My brother refused saying that the dog was like a guard dog for my dad and alerted him when someone was around. I called the animal shelter and told them to come for the dog and they didn't take him because my brother refused. I don't know what to do, I live 18hrs away and only visit for a year. I know my brother knows better than that since he has a min pin who is very healthy and has all the medical care he needs. What can I do to help this poor dog? more

Voting Question: Can I contract MRSA from food?

My mom was just diagnosed with what the doctor thinks is probably MRSA. The boil (where the doctor thinks the infection is located) is on her leg, but she also has small bumps all up and down her arms, hands, chest and back. The other day, before we knew what it was (she has a slew of medical issues and we assumed it was a non-contagious rash due to her nerve problems) her and I were sharing a bag of chips, both sticking our hand in the bag. Can I get MRSA from this? If so, will it be the same controllable, skin-affecting type or will it go straight to my core? I wash my hands a lot, and haven't touched the rashes themselves. But I want to be on the alert. more

Resolved Question: How to educate about service dogs when having medical issues.?

I have a medical alert service dog for a neurological disability. I by no means appear to be disabled, but am. Recently, I have become increasing symptomatic, am no longer working or driving, so when I do leave the house, it is with the aide of a "service human" in addition to my service dog. Before the recent increase in difficulty, I found it easy to ignore stupid comments and educate when necessary, however, now I need to focus on doing what I need to get done. Ironically, I have also had more access challenges recently (now that I look like something may not be quite right) than I did before. What would be the best way to deal with educating, stupid comments, and access challenges when feeling really bad and not able to "think on your feet"? To clarify: By stupid comments, I mean, a father telling his son, "That dog's vest says 'Do Not Pet, I'm Working' but that lady's blind, so you can pet the dog, she won't know." or "Oh, it's a MEAN DOG, get away....get away!" My service dog is 115 lbs. more

Resolved Question: Would you take an implanted microchip?

The following is my interpretation of a possible scenario that could cause this type of action: So lets just imagine for a moment that (God forbid) more acts of violence begin occurring in the US with greater frequency. It is found that certain religious views might be responsible for these acts. The highest concentration of believers of this said religion or belief were of middle eastern decent and residing in the states. High numbers of this demographic from the previous years census are reported. It is understood that a large majority of this demographic has nothing to do with any such actions of violence, however they are practitioners of the beliefs. Due to the rising volume of violence the American public begins to demand a resolve. One option is to "Chip" or implant an non removable microchip under the skin for Identification purposes. With censors in place in public areas your information could be scanned in wirelessly (via bluetooth) to a main computer and could log your whereabouts. With this information the government could have direct knowledge who, when and where. The chip would also be used as a means of currency. Scanners for the chip would be in supermarkets and grocery stores, a wireless transfer of money could be made with only a pin pad entry and a wave of the hand. The chip could also hold medical records and could alert an ambulance if the censers in the chip detected a sudden cardiac arrest or high fever. Because of the diversity of this technology the government makes being "chiped" a requirement to be a citizen. That being a possible scenario would you get chiped? more

Resolved Question: Why an illegal alien attack a defenseless frail 84 year old woman?

Slidell police arrested an illegal Mexican immigrant Wednesday night on charges of attempted first-degree homicide and armed robbery after he allegedly slashed the throat of an 84-year-old woman during a robbery in her home. The woman, who was not identified by police, survived the attack, and according to Police Chief Freddy Drennan, is, “doing very well,” at a local hospital after emergency surgery Wednesday night. Drennan said police officers responded to a medical call in the 3100 block of College St., around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday where it was reported someone had their throat cut. When police and paramedics got there, they found the woman sitting on her couch, conscious, bleeding profusely from a slash across her neck. “The cut was about 8 inches long,” said Capt. Kevin Swann of the Slidell Police Department. Despite her life-threatening injury, the woman was able to tell police that she had been cut by a person who lived across the street from her. She said the suspect, Ricardo Tenorio-Palma, 20, 3116 College Street, had come into her home and cut her throat with a 3-inch long razor blade that is used in industrial scrapers, before he took $65 from her and fled the house. What makes a tragic incident even worse is that the woman had tried to help Palma by hiring him to hang her Christmas lights and do odd jobs around the house. She had even donated some furniture to Palma and his three roommates who lived across the street. “It just rips your heart out,” Drennan said, “and makes the crime even more heinous.” The police were able to get a search warrant for Palma’s house, where they found bloody clothes, blood on the floor and the razor used in the attack. However, Palma was not in the house. Police fanned out across the area, and Detective Daniel Seuzeneau found Palma walking by the tennis courts on Cleveland Street around 9:30 Wednesday night, and Palma was arrested without incident. Swann said the victim and her neighbors gave police a good description of the suspect, and he was easy to spot by the detective. It turned out Palma did not speak any English and a bilingual Slidell police officer had to translate for the suspect. Drennan said that Palma confessed to the attack and robbery. He said he came into the house through the side door, which is left unlocked so the victim’s cat can go in and out. Even though, Palma has not said why he slashed the woman, Drennan said the motive was robbery. He told police that he wanted money to get something to eat. Swann said that Palma acted fast. “He slashed her first, before he robbed her. He intended to kill her,” Swann said. After Palma left, Drennan said the victim pushed her Emergency Alert button, which called the security company. They in turn called the woman’s son-in-law, who tried to call the victim’s house, but got no answer. So he went over to her house, and after getting in and finding her, tried to call 911. However, the phone would not work, and he had to go next door and use a neighbor’s phone to call the police. The elderly woman is being lauded for being tough and surviving the attack. Sgt. Sean Mclain, who interviewed the victim, said that the woman did punch and kick Palma during the attack. She also had a defensive wound of a cut on her hand, Mclain said. He was really impressed with the way she reacted to the situation. “She is a tough lady,” Mclain said. “It was incredible how in her condition she was able to talk.” He said he interviewed her Thursday morning, and her attitude was greatly im-proved. Drennan said Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials confirmed that Palma was an “undocumented alien,” who has been living in the U.S. for the past nine months. The chief said Palmas and his roommates were living on College Street for the past three to five months. Drennan did not know the immigration status of the other three residents, but did say they all had jobs and were at work at the time of the robbery. “He [Palma] acted alone,” Drennan said. He said Palma had been unemployed for the past several months, which is why he worked for the victim. Palma was taken to St. Tammany Jail in Covington, where bond will be set. http://www.thesttammanynews.com/articles/2009/12/18/news/doc4b2b9f8d960e4760623668.txt Does La Raza post bail in cases like this to ensure the illegals human rights are violated more

Resolved Question: Marijana a "gateway" drug? Is it even a "drug"? Truth or lies.?

A "drug" is defined by wikipedia as: " any substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function." Marijuana does alter normal bodily function, so by definition it is a drug. However, marijuana is considered a recreational drug which is defined by wikipedia as "Recreational drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, such as opioids or hallucinogens. They may be used for perceived beneficial effects on perception, consciousness, personality, and behavior Some drugs can cause addiction and habituation." Ok so pot is not an opioid or a hallucinogen. *if it is a hallucinogen I have never hallucinated after taking my medication. And I use the word medication because it is exactly that. Wikipedia descripes medicne as : "Medicine is the art and science of healing. It encompasses a range of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness. Contemporary medicine applies health science, biomedical research, and medical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through medication, surgery, or some other form of therapy. The word medicine is derived from the Latin ars medicina, meaning the art of healing. To touch on the "Gateway drug" part of my "question", the main reason that people who try pot move on to other drugs *and i know this from personal experience* is that we are lied to from when we are young about Marijuana. In China dating back almost 5,000 years doctors prescribed weed for pregenant women, those who couldn't eat, and even to the point of curing mild psycosis. We are told that it causes psycosis. The law forbiding this medicine to be used on a mass scale in the U.S. is based on racisim. That's right here's some truth that you dont' want to hear is that the U.S. is still up holding racist laws put into effect to help to diminish the immigration out of mexico and into the US. So in other words we are taught from a young age that RACISIM IS OK!! WTF. My grandmother had cancer, she was told she only had about 6 months to a year to live. She couldn't eat *due to chemo* she was in constant pain *due to the cancer* and she was very depresed. I gave her a glass of pot milk, *which I made for her* within 30 min she was hungry, and able to hold food down. her pain became minimal, and she lived for another 3 years with continued use. Yes that's right without going back for more chemo. She stoped taking the prescribed drugs and treatments and continiued to use mecial marijuana. Why have we been lied to about the posititve attributes about this plant? One of my friends who has MS couldn't stand taking the medication his doctors prescribed him because it turned him into a "zombie" he started smoking pot every day 3 times a day at the same frequency of his MS pills. Since starting the smoking of pot he is more active, happier and more alert than he had been in years. So to wrap this all up, Marijuana is and isn't a gateway drug, it is because we have been lied to our whole lives that weed is such a terrible drug that ruins lives and we have come to find out that it isn't even close to true. The thinking then becomes that every other drug must be a lie. Yes by definition it is a drug, but in practice it is just as harmelss as a bottle of green tea. *side note: NO ONE HAS EVER DIED FROM A THC OVERDOSE!!!!! How many pain killers/anti-depressents/ anti-psychotics and other "medicines" claim the lives every year in the us? Too Many!" This is entirely met to be a disscusion. No negatives but if you differ on the writing then feel free to be intelligent and post your opinion. more

Resolved Question: Should I get a medical alert bracelet (Don't want to make a doctors visit just to ask this)?

I recently found out that I'm 0 negative blood type. I also have severe acid reflux (even with medication the pain caused by the reflux gets so bad I can't move a lot of the time), a latex allergy and common plant allergies ( light allergic reactions. On allergy medication.) I'm also allergic to milk ,to a certain OTC allergy medication (severe reaction) and I'm immune (not allergic) to amoxicillin. I also get frequent migraines (vision gets blurry with most of them and i feel lightheaded and close to passing out when they happen). I've been told by people (some of whom have medical alert bracelets for real medical conditions) that I should get a medical alert bracelet because of having O negative blood (I can only receive that blood type), the latex allergy, the migraines and reaction from them, and the lactose intolerance because I've heard some emergency medicines contain milk. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Medical report from Iraq?

A UK squad was marching north of Fallujah when they came upon an Iraqi insurgent, badly injured and unconscious. On the opposite side of the road was a British soldier in a similar but less serious state. The soldier was conscious and alert and as first aid was given to both men, the platoon leader asked the injured soldier what had happened. The soldier reported, "I was moving north along the highway here, and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. We saw each other and both took cover in the ditches along the road. I yelled to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable, lowlife scum bag who got what he deserved, and he yelled back that Gordon Brown is a fat, good-for-nothing, left wing half-blind Jock, and Lord Mandelson is a cross-dressing tw*t. So I said that Osama Bin Laden dresses and acts like a frigid, mean-spirited lesbian. He retaliated by yelling, "Oh yeah? Well, so does Harriet Harman!" "And, there we were, in the middle of the road, shaking hands, when a bus hit us." more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this thesis?

"Help! I‘ve fallen and I can‘t get up!” All television viewers are familiar with this older woman’s cry for help as she promotes a medical alert system which will immediately respond to her cry for physical help. But who helps those individuals who have been so wounded emotionally and psychologically that their cried for help appear to be demands to be alone? Ingemar Gustafson, in his poem “Locked-In,” compares the protective shield such individuals create to a coconut which traps the person inside without offering any means of communicating his pain to others. The result is that he lives alone and isolated, actually resisting any interaction with other people. Gustafon poses this question: Can a person who lives in a coconut be saved? Kurt Vonnegut demonstrates that people who have delveloped thick protection against further psychological and emotion pain can be helped ion his stories “The Kid Nobody Could Handle” and “ Who Am I This Time.” more

Resolved Question: CREDIT SCORE DROP WHILE DISPUTING A PAID COLLECTION?

I've worked hard this year at paying off bills, paying down credit cards, etc to improve my credit score.I was advised by a FICO rep to dispute some paid collections in hopes that they would be removed from my credit report. There were 3 old school loans that were paid off in 2005 and 3 medical bills that were paid off in mid 2009. I filed a dispute with Equifax on 11/9/09. In less than 24 hours, I received an alert reading that my score had dropped 11 points. There were no new accounts or delinquencies and nothing new or negative on my credit report, so it all had to do with the disputes. I called Equifax, who blamed Fico, who blamed Equifax. I talked with a myriad of reps in the US, the Phillipines and India who know nothing and could only tell me that it happens sometimes. I repeatedly asked why to no avail. I got so much misinformation it made me want to spit! Anyway, on 11/16/09, a rep told me that my disputes were completed on 11/12/09 and that the accounts were mine. Well, I never said they weren't. When filing the dispute, I clicked the option that I was no longer liable for the account because they were paid. Equifax updated the report date on all the disputed accounts to 11/09 even though they were paid in 2005 and mid 2009. I was told that this is not the paid date but the reporting date. I told them that it still looks as if I just paid these accounts in Nov 2009 or that the creditors are just reporting them in Nov 2009. Fico told me that just because the scores went down, that doesn't mean that they come back up when the dispute is completed even though nothing changed. I filed a complaint with the FTC and I am seriously thinking about suing Equifax and or FICO in small claims court. Remember, a FICO rep told me to dispute things in the first place. At the very least, it will force them to spend money to send a rep to court to defend them. Are there any class action suits going on against Equifax or would anyone like to start one? I know they've been sued several times. Please advise.Fico never told me that disputing an item would cause a new reporting date that would drop your score. If I had known this, I never would disputed these item in the first place. Of course, FICO tried every tactic known to man to defend their rep and they refused to give me corporate info to file a complaint. Thanks for nothing Edwin and Jennifer. I hope you have issues and have to deal with people like yourselves as you are completely useless. more

Resolved Question: What is wrong with me?

Is this something to do with my mind? an illness of sorts, or just the stages im going through. I started college 4 weeks ago, with my best mate (girl) thought everything was gunna be amazing, however after a week we fell out, and moved on, maybe that is what caused it. Ever since then, well i have new friends, who are much better. Though i have stopped eating, not altogether, but reduced loads. No breakfast, no dinner and no snacks. I do however drink water and coke etc. I just didnt really feel or want to eat. Also its like im 2 sided, outside of college im loud, outgoing and very chatty. Inside of college (26 girls and just me a lad) im the opposite, i dont normally talk to people, im very quiet, and only have conversation with my close mates. I thought of an idea to solve both of them, i bought 48 pro plus tablets - caffeine. And take them 6 a day, in my mind, im becoming hyper or more alert therefore talking more to people and keeping my body awake and active. I dont understand why im like this, is this like a medical condition or something simpler ? Also i dont know if this is true, but my parents said i might have Autism ? Could that have anything to do with it ? more

Voting Question: Is it possible to get the molds taken to make your retainers?

I am curious if a patient is within their legal rights to request the molds taken in order to create the retainers made after one's braces are taken off. If, God forbid, I ever lose my retainers will I have to go back to orthodontist who had them made to replace them? Not only do I like to have my own "copies" of my medical records, as it eliminates the need to go back to a doctor if records are needed later, but the orthodontist who did my braces continues to fraudulently charge my insurance company for services to me they have not rendered. I kept getting statements from my insurer that benefits were paid out to ortho for over a year after my braces were taken off. I alerted the company to it in writing and that finally ended. The orthodontist couldn't wait to get my braces off, and I wasn't happy with the rushed results, by the way. Recently, I got a statement that I'd supposedly been to their office for "orthodontic adjustment," whatever that is, They never called to offer to me the service. I am ready to blow the whistle on them big time, but first want to find out whether I'll be at the mercy of their practice should I lose my retainers. What are the options for replacing orthodontic retainers? Thanks, Imlyn, for your response. As far as finding another ortho, now that the job is done, I no longer use them anyway, have no need to. That's why there's no question that their continued billling is fraudulent. As long as I don't need to return to the original orthodontist to take molds and get fitted should I ever lose my retainers, my concerns are answered. Martha, thanks for your input. My ortho treatment wasn't botched, but it was hard to tell if the results I was seeking had been acheived before the braces came off. Like I said, this ortho seemed to think I was ready. I disagreed, and sure enough, even though what I was looking for was achievable, this job didn't accomplish what I went through the trouble to have done. For the most part, it is an improvement over what I started with, so it was successful to that degree. The office isn't scamming me directly, but since they are billing the insurance co. fraudulently, that's how my rates will go up. Thanks again. more
