Mardi Gras News Questions asked

Resolved Question: is it legal or moral for my news paper teacher to make us sell things and for our grade to depend on it?

My newspaper teacher is making it required for each of us students to sell $25 worth of car wash tickets and close to $30 worth of mardi gras beads that are our school colors. None of us signed up to sell these items, but she is making our grades depend on it. If we don't sell these items, we have to buy them ourselves or get a zero for the assignment, and our grade goes down. Some people are able to afford to buy their own grade but not everyone can afford to buy their own grade. When i signed up for the school news paper i wasn't expecting to have to buy my grades. Is it legal for her to make it required to sell things? more

Resolved Question: Will you critique this story I wrote? I'm undecided about whether I like it or not?

I currently have a love/hate relationship with this story. Here's a chunk of the opening paragraphs. Sorry it's a little long. You don't have to read it all. The first day in a new school. It was worse than I had imagined. They were all looking at me. And I could definitely see why. In my off brand sneakers and unfashionably dorky sweatshirt, I didn’t fit they various stereotypical molds this school offered. A quick survey of my surroundings showed I wouldn’t fit in with the crew clustered to my right. This consisted of a group of athletic, tan looking people. The boys wore leather letter jackets; the girls had on cheerleading uniforms made out of a shockingly small amount of fabric. The small clique to my left didn’t look right for me either. They all possessed some sort of tattoo or piercing. Plus, I’d never really gotten into the dyed hair and all black clothes movement. A group of girls stood in the middle of the room. They all wore brand name shirts and flawless makeup on their flawless faces. I guessed to join their little group, your allowance from daddy had to top $1,000. They stared at me and cocked a collective eyebrow, as if daring me to come closer and associate with them. These gestures made me want to turn and run all the way back to where I came from. The place where I was most comfortable---Louisiana. I loved Louisiana more than an alcoholic loved a nice cold can of Coors. It was where I grew up----the large town of Shreveport to be specific. There was always something going on there from Mardi Gras parades to concerts; it was never dull. I lived in an average middle class house with my average middle class family. This consisted of my mom, Lauren, a paralegal for a pretty big law firm. It was accurate to say my mom wore the pants in the family seeing as my father was unemployed 99% of the time. My dad, Alex, was still trying to make it big in the screenwriting industry. His biggest accomplishment to date was a toaster strudel commercial that aired for a full 20 seconds on T.V. My 4 year old sister, Rose, was your average run-of-the-mill little kid. She had a penchant for singing show tunes from Sesame Street, a hobby that both annoyed at charmed the entire family simultaneously. Yes, it was safe to say I led a normal life in Louisiana. But my favorite thing about Shreveport was that I had friends there. I attended a very small school as a freshman. There were 70 kids tops in my grade, so everyone knew everyone’s most intimate details. That also meant pretty much everyone was friends. After all, it’s hard to hate someone whose dad rescued your cat from a tree, isn’t it? It was August and I was looking forward to being a sophomore at the same small school with the kids I grew up with come September. Then we received the news. Due to budget cuts, the law firm that Mom worked at had to make some lay offs. It turns out my mom was one of the more dispensable paralegals at the firm of White, Smith, and Jackson.the word that is starred out is c--o--c---k---e----d--- yahoo! stars it outnever read twilight--- although my obsessed friend is trying to make me. more

Resolved Question: What is it like living in New Orleans in 2009?

Katrina must have changed things, or has it really? Is the crime rate different than it was before the hurricane, is the city still beautiful? Has the Creole, 'Mardi Gras' culture changed any? I'm honestly just curious. I want to know firsthand how the city has or hasn't been changed, as opposed to seeing news reports on TV that I have no idea how accurate they are. Or aren't, you get my point. more

Resolved Question: This week in review (joke)?

This week in news: The woman attacked by a 200 lb chimpanzee has been transferred to a new hospital and is slowly recovering from having her lips, nose, eyelids, and hands ripped off by the enraged primate. When asked about whether the monkey was going to be put down, authorities said that all he needs is a good spanking. Speaking of monkeys who need spanked, Michael Jackson has announced that he plans a comeback. In dire need of money after filing bankruptcy and having his Neverland Ranch foreclosed on, Mike has joined forces and become the new spokesman for K-Mart new “Blue light special”. Mr. Jackson is excited about getting boy’s undergarments half off. Initial reports came in that the earth was only 48,000 miles away from being hit with a three mile wide asteroid, capable of killing millions and changing the face of the earth forever. At first it was thought to be nothing more than a close call, but as it turns out, the asteroid did in fact cause one casualty, as it hit and completely destroyed Joaquin Phoenix’s acting career. Search and rescue for two former NFL players who were lost at sea after their boat capsized has been halted. Many people have wondered what type of boat the weekend fishermen took out into the water that day. Coast Guard officials only know one thing about the make. Due to the fact that the boat’s owner was a member of the 2008 Detroit Lions, there is absolutely no chance that it was a Four Winns. The girl who had her feet severed at the ankle during a 2004 trip to Six Flags amusement park has been fitted with her second pair of prosthetic feet, and now at 17 years of age, has lived a normal life. This is exceedingly good news due to the fact that she was injured on a rollercoaster named “Superman”, and therefore was lucky not to be paralyzed from the neck down. Initial reports are in stating that the new economic stimulus pack has allowed thousands to return to work. Unfortunately, most of these people are illegal migrant workers, as they remain the only people willing to return to work for $13.00 a week. Revelers decked out in sequins, feathers, wigs and leather danced through the streets of Sydney on Saturday to the cheers of more than 300,000 people at the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. More than 130 floats and 9,500 people participated in the procession, which began as a protest march in 1978 by homosexual and transsexual men and women and has flourished into one of the world's largest and most flamboyant gay pride events. "I am totally in my element," said a transsexual who identified herself as Gummi Cat. "This is my first year being in the parade and I am absolutely loving it," he/she said from a carriage pulled by a man dressed in little more than a black leather harness. Sorry, no joke here. If that vision enough isn’t enough to make you laugh, nothing I say has a chance. more

Resolved Question: Why Does America Hate New Orleans?

Why is it that people complain about New Orleans getting rebuilt, because its below sea level, when other places are even in more danger, but people don't seem to mind rebuilding there. What makes us less important then the rest of the country? Maybe cause; Partly it’s because the news media views New Orleans as a "bad news" story for the Bush administration. The media is campaigning for a Democrat to be the next President so nothing positive is ever reported about the federal efforts here. Watch for the change if a Democrat is elected in November (especially if it's Hillary Clinton). The incoming Democrat will be given credit for "saving" New Orleans even before they take office in January. Partly it's because New Orleans has always been tolerant of alternate lifestyles, and that resulted in many hate sermons from "pastors" and "reverends" who said NOLA was destroyed for our sins. After all, the bars don't have to close, stores sell alcohol on Sundays, and there are even strip clubs - obviously New Orleans DESERVED to be visited by the Wrath of God. Right? Partly it's because of out-and-out racism. The video of looters helped cement any stereotypes people elsewhere might already have. Partly it's because people think New Orleans is only about Jazz, Mardi Gras, and Bourbon Street. They don't realize NOLA is an essential element of the USA's critical national infrastructure and it CAN'T be moved. They also seem to think New Orleans is only the French Quarter (10 blocks by 13 blocks) and don't realize it is a metro area with a population well over a million. Partly it's because of the awful performances by ex-Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin. No one likes a loser. In this case, twin losers. also New Orleans is not below sea level. Most of the city and metro area are above sea level and the parts below are usually only a little below SL. New Orleans is NOT prone to being hit by hurricanes and - despite at least one answer - has NOT been repeatedly flooded. The last hurricane to strike the city before Katrina was Betsy in 1965, which did not flood the city-proper. Before that was a storm in 1947 (hurricanes weren't named until the 1950s), which also did not flood the city-proper. New Orleans had a very high rate of flood insurance coverage at the time Katrina hit - one of the highest in the nation. I don't know where this idea that "no one in New Orleans had insurance" comes from, but I see it all the time. Katrina was the most powerful storm ever recorded to strike North America. It would have flooded any coastal city, but it happened to hit New Orleans. Nowhere is without risk. New York, Baltimore, & Miami are much greater risk from hurricanes than New Orleans. Los Angeles and San Francisco have been rebuilt after multiple earthquakes. The Midwest is hit by tornadoes every year. Seattle has to worry about volcanoes and even Tsunamis. Florida is hit by hurricanes almost every year. And so on - but somehow ONLY New Orleans is "unworthy" of being rebuilt. Go figure more

Resolved Question: Mardi Gras in St. Louis to go on despite weather...?

Resolved Question: Question about news media and Mardi Gras?

The cliche Mardi Gras stories are starting to emerge in the media, even on the Yahoo portal. Why does the media never seem to notice that women in Brazil are dancing 99% naked and in New Orleans they're running around topless for beads? Are they afraid to embarass the Chambers of Coomerce and lose their travel ads? Instead you get the story about the peasant farmer guy in Brazil dressing up like a lioin and people on floats throwing candy to kids lining the street in New Orleans.I'm not looking for information to flashing, not thatthere's anything wrong with that, I'm wondering why the media pretends it doesn't happen. more

Resolved Question: This is why I am concerned about hate crimes legislation here in the states...?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=403815&in_page_id=1770 Excerpt: South Wales police admitted evangelical Christian Stephen Green was then charged purely because his pamphlets contained anti-gay quotations from the Bible. Mr Green faces a court appearance today charged with using 'threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour' after his attempt to distribute the leaflets at the weekend 'Mardi Gras' event in Cardiff. A spokesman for the police said the campaigner had not behaved in a violent or aggressive manner, but that officers arrested him because 'the leaflet contained Biblical quotes about homosexuality'. Our new Hate Crimes bill uses verbage that includes the word perceived which is a slippery slope. I personally think gays should be afforded civil unions, however if my fellow brethren would like to have free speech about this matter, they most certainly should be able to safely and legally. Thoughts? US soon?Rocco: I dont think heterosexuals should be "married" by the state anyways. All they are is civil unions. I believe Churches should maintain marriage as this word has come from religion and keep whats secular, secular :) Civil Unions for all! more

Resolved Question: % of gay and lesbian Police in Queensland police service?

Dear Madam/Sir, I am writing to you because I would like to know how many police officers are Gay or Lesbians in the Queensland police service? I remember watching the news one night where the commissioner Atkinson saying a few years ago now that the Gay and Lesbian community were not going to be bashed any more by the Queensland police service members. I have not watched the Sydney gay and lesbian mardi gras in a while so I have not scene any police officers represent the Queensland police service in the parade. I would like to see police from every town in Queensland hold hands with the gay and lesbian community at the Sydney Mardi Gras to show how tolerate they are these days in the parade. I look forward to your reply. more
