Heaters A Heater Type Portable Questions asked

Voting Question: Confused about what happened.. (Computer, Power Outage)?

This all happened to my boyfriend while I was asleep so I'm trying to piece it back together from when he woke me up. He was on my desktop computer when the power went out twice, The computer is going from a power strip to a fairly old socket (only 2 prongs, not 3) that we've tried our best to "ground" without much electrical experience. It's been this way for about 2 years. No problems. Anyways, it wasn't just the computer that went out, but the entire house. He said he heard some kind of squeaking where the wall socket is. Not a buzz, but a squeak! First thing I thought was maybe a mouse started chewing, but he said it went on for a bit till he figured out where it was coming from and unplugged everything from that wall and turned off the overhead fan which I guess somehow goes to that wall as well. The power is back on now, I wasn't awake when it happened and hes asleep now so I don't know how long it was out the two times it happened. I do know the breaker didn't trip (old screw in type). I need my computer to work in a few hours (this laptop doesn't have my programs on it) and I'm considering putting it on a heavy duty orange extension cord and running it to the kitchen like we have been this winter a few times for our portable heater. The heater we used in this way says 1500V and I just want to make sure my computer or the plug in the kitchen won't have any issues with this like tripping something or starting a fire LOL. The plug in the kitchen is the only free 3 prong plug in the house so I trust it more than anything else in the bedroom. I'll probably need to keep it this way for about a week or so till we can have an electrician come out to take a look. Any thoughts on both issues would be appreciated. more

Resolved Question: radiators? what type is best?

Resolved Question: What's the best way to heat my garage in winter only when working in it?

I'm in Michigan. It's a 2-car garage that is very well insulated with no plumbing. I only need to heat once in a while when I want to work on a car or something, maybe once a week if that. Would like to stay inexpensive and perhaps portable. A friend recommended a kerosene heater (a torpedo-type deal). Is that okay for an enclosed space? THANKS!Should add that I have electricity (plenty) there, but no natural gas or other fuel source available. more

Resolved Question: How can I use solar energy to power my portable oil filled heater for my room?

It seems that there is a lot of confusion about how to use solar energy in an everyday setting. I live in an apartment, my bedroom is always cold. I want to use my portable oil-filled radiator to heat my room. And since I have exposure to the sun in my bedroom window, I want to use some type of solar panel to power my heater. Is there a unit that I can put in my window that will absorb or charge a battery so I can plug my heater in at night to heat my room so I can sleep? more

Resolved Question: Looking for a portable heater. Need recommendation.?

I am looking for a portable heater, I am not sure as to what type to get but I am leaning towards an infrared heater. The lady at my place of work whom works in human resources owns an infrared heater and swears by it. Now I heard that infrared heaters do not heat the air per se, but instead heat the objects within the room, but the heat one feels is instantaneous. Is this true? The details: my home is about 1040 sq feet. Roughly 40 feet by 26 feet. My main room is 26 feet by 22 feet with an 11 foot ceiling. I have drafts and have tried to seal them to the best of my ability. I put plastic on all the windows. I put socket sealers in all of the outlet boxes and wall switches. I have caulked small gaps and used non expanding foam in the larger gaps. My bed room is drafty but I have left the door open as I do not have a return air in the bedroom. (I have a central HVAC unit). Does anyone have a recommendation on the type/brand of infrared heater to get? I am not sure as to the BTUs I need nor am I sure of the wattage needed, but I have a Heat Surge flameless fireplace that at its highest setting pumps out about 5100 BTUs, but that only heats an 18 foot by 18 foot room. I want something that puts out just enough BTUs to heat the dimensions I stated earlier in this message and keep me comfortable, but I want something is very cost efficient. I would appreciate any help one can give me. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Are household electric baseboard heaters more or less efficient than portable oil heaters?

Radiator type heaters that burn oil seem like an inexpensive option for heating rooms in a house. more

Resolved Question: What would be the best type of portable heater to use in a power outage in my small home? Propane or Kerosene?

We've had a few power outages with severe winter storms in the last couple years, I'd like to get a smaller size heater to heat up a couple rooms if I'm left without power for a couple days. As a female, I'm looking for safety but also want it to not cost too much. I've seen small propane heaters at Lowe's for around $70 that come with a small propane tank and you can buy extra, but not sure if Kerosene would be a better choice. (Of course I will have a fire extenguisher nearby and it would only be used when I was iced in at my home and there to monitor it). Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How can I get my roommate to turn down the heater/thermostat?

I already gave her a 30 day notice to move out but can't take this heat for another 27 days. I live in CA and she turns my the heater to 76 which might not seem much but omg I have my bedroom window open and in a tank top and splashing myself with water throughout the night like it's in the dead of summer. Heat rises and I"m on the 2nd floor (she is too), the thermostat is downstairs where it's cool so it's prob 90 degrees in the bedrooms. I turned it down to 70 but in the middle of the night she goes down and turns it back up. For the record I also pay all the utilities so if I tell her to get a portable heater that would take a lot of energy. How can I get her to keep it down??? I am the softspoken type so I don't know how I can do this and for her to actually comply. I was nervous to turn it down in the first place only to be shocked she 'd turn it right back up. Help before I have a heat stroke! It's illegal to ask for any utilities since it was not in the original agreement and it's not only about money. I'll pay HER $500 to keep it down. I just can't sleep, it is so hot and I go to the bathroom to step on the cool tile, cry and count the hours til she goes to work which is not until 10am so I can turn it off. Five minutes to go!!!!!!!!!!!We NEVER hang out or socialize and on the very rare occasion I have someone over there's no realistic chance we'd all be in the same room talking, won't happen. I'm not friends with the roommate, was a bad choice to get one in the first place and now I need her to not turn the heat up. She's very bossy and inconsiderate and PRETENDS not to understand anything when I talk to her even though she has a bachelor's from a US university she starts saying "no understand" when she is a bright Japanese girl with an American boyfriend. I am so fed up seriously wish I could kick her out today but by law had to give her 30 whole days.Brown eyed girl - you are a genius!!!!! more

Resolved Question: Can I use a portable heater on a 15 amp circuit?

I have a portable oil filled radiator type heater. At the warmest setting, it is 1500 watts. The circuit breaker has 15 amps for the bedroom and living/dining area outlets. I read someplace that you should only use 80% of capacity, which in this case would be 1440 watts. (15 amps x 120 = 1800 and 80% of that is 1440) So, does this mean I shouldn't use this heater? more

Resolved Question: S.O.S. HELP!!! I have a roach problem!!!?

I have been protecting my home from roaches for the past 3 years with a product labeled Ortho Home Defense Max. It was working well until we bought a used portable heater which I think was housing roaches and their eggs. Not just any ole cockroach but those ugly small roaches with the eggs hanging out of their butts. How can I get rid of them as they are getting out of control! I keep spraying the inside of my home as well as outside. I have bombed my garage (where the heater was stored) with Raid bombs. I have yet to do the inside. Is their a stronger product or something that will drive them away for good? If I had the funds I'd pay a pest control guy but I don't. Plus I feel like if I was keeping them away for that long with no problem I can continue to do it. I just need suggestions on how to start. P.S. I know there attracted to any type of food so I have been keeping up with my cleaning but their still multiplying. more

Resolved Question: What is the best type of portable heater for a 220 sf room?

I've been trying to research heaters and I'm completely baffled. I read about this Lasko portable baseboard heater at Lowe's, which supposedly heats up to 400sf, but I find this hard to believe. It's only 5 inches by 40 inches. The room is an add-on with tons of windows and not well insulated, so I want to be sure to get something that will be capable of getting the chill out. Our house is in Texas, where it rarely gets below freezing, but it does stay very chilly at night for a few months. more

Resolved Question: How well do heat/cool air conditioners work as far as heating?

I am considering getting a 1 br 1 ba house that is pretty open except for the bedroom and bathroom (pretty high ceilings as well, although there is a fan up there), it is maybe 600 sq ft. It has a window ac unit, so I was thinking if that will cool the place, then maybe if I got one with a heater in it it would be able to heat the place. I was also thinking about something like http://www.bizrate.com/airconditioners/soleus-lx-140-14000-btu-portable-air-conditioner--pid367473612/ (a heater and ac combo that is on wheels so it can be moved around) so that the window would be freed, and it could be moved about somewhat. Does anyone have any experience with these type things? All the reviews I am finding just cover the cooling ability. Any other ideas for heating the area would be appreciated as well. Also, this may end up being a rental property so I don't want it to be anything too annoying (like moving heaters around everywhere) or potentially dangerous (like a wood stove). more

Resolved Question: Anyone out there with a "Wood Pellet Heater?"?

Resolved Question: I need to heat my outdoor office. What type of heat should i use?

I built an office in my non heated mortan building. The room is a fully insulated 10x13 with 8 ft ceilings. i want to keep a constant 50 deg. and be able to turn it up to 70 and have it warm within 20 min or so. I need some expert opinions on what type of electric heating unit to use. 220v or 110 base board heater? fan forced wall mount (like the ones in vestibules)? would just some portable space heaters keep it warm? It gets cold here its 4 deg outside right now. more

Resolved Question: Which is more economical - using out central heat that uses propane or using several electric portable heaters?

The home that my husband and I moved into two years ago that runs off of propane. Our propane tank is 250 gallons and it cost us $525 to have it filled up about a month ago. Having spent over $1600 on propane over the course of four months during our first winter here, we decided it would save us money to invest in electric, portable heaters. We have a larger home (2200 sq. foot), our living room is about 500 sq. feet with 18 ft. ceilings so it has been difficult finding anything portable that can efficiently heat that space but have been using a small, portable, electric fireplace, along with a radiator type heater in the master bathroom, which also is the heat source for the master bedroom, a larger, ceramic heater with a thermostat in the hallway where our children's rooms are located and one small, tabletop, ceramic heater in my oldest son's room. These heaters are only on when we're home and when we're awake. They are shut off at night and when we're not home. We purchased some electric blankets for our children's beds that have a 10 hr. auto shutoff feature but I'm overly paranoid about fires so I always shut them off before I go to bed. Anyway, long story short, latest propane bill was $525.00 to fill up the tank. It would probably last about two months if we used our central heat as our sole heat source. Our most recent electric bill was $250.00, which is the highest it has been since July. So obviously, either way we go, it's not going to be cheap. I'm just wondering if there's something out there that's great at heating larger areas, that's safe to have around children, low cost and efficient, that doesn't require renovating your home to install it. Any suggestions? At this point, I'd rather just strictly use the central heat. It might cost us $500+ every couple of months but at least we'd be warm and I'd have my piece of mind at night. My husband on the other hand prefers to leave the heat off altogether because he hates that propane bill.Incidentally, we installed a programmable thermostat today hoping that would help. more

Voting Question: portable home heater that runs on batteries?

we've looked on google and couldn't find anything close to what we're looking for. we've been searching for a type of heater that runs on batteries rather than electricity (for when the power goes out). not gas/propane powered etc. just batteries. any ideas on what exactly to look for? or do you own one? or know where to get one? ...anything you've got is helpful, thank you. :)naw, we're not quite looking for something that'll work as well as a fire or indoor heating -- just something that we can sit around and keep us warm. it doesn't have to be large or anything. but still, thanks.yeah we weren't sure IF such a thing existed, but we were hoping there might be something out there; might be something that didn't require a generator of sorts etc. but thank you.wow, great explination. thank you very much. i think we're pretty convinced -- looking for something simple (and hopefully cheap) like this is obviously too good to be true. i think we'll just stick to blankets. thank you. :) more

Resolved Question: Portable Generator Purchase Decision?

I'm looking to purchase a portable generator about 5,000 watts. Can someone give me a good , reliable , and very common brand that would be easy to get parts for ( if needed ) not just engine parts but the generator as well. I don't really know briggs & stratton"s reputation these days but I know I still see the older motors going even today. I'd like to spend under $ 500.00 but really under $350.00 ideally.. Any suggestions would be appreciated. There are just so many out there. Eastern Tool, Northern, Briggs, Troy Built etc...etc... I would be using this for my cottage apartment as well as "out on the road" for use with an automotive battery charger, Electric impact gun, and any type of camping needs. The higest consumer I can think of would be a portable electric heater at 1500w... I really don't need industrial. Thanks A model number would be great....heck, even a place to buy.Great advice. I figured in an emergency situation I might need (two) 1500 watt electric heaters for my apartment plus a light and maybe a small appliance. In fact, I could probably get away with a 2000 or 2500 watt generator if I use only one heater and a light . I don't want a lot of noise so it looks like I should really consider the Honda engine.. I'll keep doing my homework for a few more days... Thanks all... more

Resolved Question: What type, and, or, kind or brand of electric portable heater is most efficient and least expensive to run?

I believe if I purchase and use supplemental electric space heaters, the costs to run these would be way less than what I am paying to heat my house with propane right now. It takes 5 gallons of propane to heat my 1500 square foot house per day. At $3 per gallon, that is $450 per month. I heated with the electric oil-filled heaters for one month and it was only a total of $150 for my electric for that month. So, even if it costs twice that, I would still be ahead by using electric to heat my house. Right? But what kind of electric heaters should I purchase? Radiant? Infrared? Convection? What brand, etc.? I am planning to use the money I have saved for propane, to purchase heaters, instead. (Seems to make more sense to me to do it this way). The electric company will not suggest a type to use. They just tell you it's a "matter of preference." Like, duh........... more

It makes them feel important. 6. Men love to be the first to read the newspaper in the morning. Not being the first is upsetting to their psyches. 7. All men are afraid of eyelash curlers. I sleep with one under my pillow, instead of a gun. 8. A good place to meet a man is at the dry cleaner. These men usually have jobs and bathe. 9. All men hate to hear, "We need to talk about our relationship." These seven words strike fear in the heart of even General Schwarzkopf. 10. Men are sensitive in strange ways. If a man has built a fire and the last log does not burn, he will take it personally. 11. Men have an easier time buying bathing suits. Women have two types: depressing and more depressing. Men have two types: nerdy and not nerdy. 12. Men have higher body temperatures than women. If your heating goes out in winter, I recommend sleeping next to a man. Men are like portable heaters that snore. 13. Women take clothing much more seriously than men. I've never seen a man walk into a party and say "Oh, my God, I'm so embarrassed; get me out of here. There's another man wearing a black tuxedo." 14. Most men hate to shop. That's why the men's department is usually on the first floor of a department store, two inches from the door. 15. If a man prepares dinner for you and the salad contains three or more types of lettuce, you should be worried about him. 16. No man is charming all of the time. Even Cary Grant is on record saying he wished he could be Cary Grant. 17. When four or more men get together, they talk about sports. 18. When four or more women get together, they talk about men. 19. Men are less sentimental than women. No man has ever seen the movie "The Way We Were" twice, voluntarily. 20. Most women are introspective: "Am I in love? Am I emotionally and creatively fulfilled?" Most men are outrospective: "Did my team win? How's my car?" 21. If a man says, "I'll call you," and he doesn't, he didn't forget. He didn't lose your number. He didn't die. He just didn't want to call you. 22. Getting rid of a man without hurting his masculinity is a problem. "Get out" and "I never want to see you again" might sound like a challenge. If you want to get rid of a man, I suggest saying, "I love you; I want to marry you; I want to have your children." Sometimes they leave so fast, they leave skid marks. 23. Men are self confident because they grow up identifying with super heroes. Women have bad self images because they grow up identifying with Barbie. 24. Male menopause is a lot more fun than female menopause. With female menopause you gain weight and get hot flashes. With male menopause, you get to date young girls and drive motorcycles. 25. Men forget everything; women remember everything. That's why men need instant replays in sports. They've already forgotten what happened. more

Resolved Question: COLD sleeping bags.....Any opinions???? WINTER CAMPING?

ok, well im planning on doing some winter camping/ice fishing this year in northern wisconsin. I will have a large portable ice shanty and heater . but what would be the best sleeping bag i could buy for these types of temperatures. It gets below zero in january but in december im expecting it to only be in the teens on average. I found a nice Coleman square sleeping bag at Fleet Farm rated -5 degrees. $59.99 but does this mean it is comfortable in -5 degree cold? the chart on the box seemed a bit misguiding saying that the comfort temp was 20-30 i think. and below that was dangerous/extreme cold. ???? I know ill have a shanty and heater but i dont want to rely solely on that. anyone have any good suggestions for sleeping bags under $80??? thanks more

Resolved Question: Bird/Parrot safe space heaters... what kind do you use?

I have been researching bird safe heaters and it seems that oil filled radiator types are safest (I know about econo-heat.com, but need one portable). There are a few suggestions on www.avianweb.com/heaters but I'd like to get advice from those of you who already have a space heater near your birds and have had no issues. I'm looking for a couple of things: - safety first... no teflon coating on any components (a lot of manufacturers say they don't have ptfe (teflon) in their heaters, but that's not always the case). - thermostat... to set the temp to a certain degree and have it come on and off to keep the room at that temp. - safety features such as anti freeze (turns on when the room hits a certain temp no matter what (like 45 degrees), auto off if it tips over, and auto off in case of overheating. - no fan, no quartz - not hot to the touch - inexpensive as I need to buy two and would like to stay around $100. Thanks in advance!I won't use heat lamps as they too can have teflon coating on them and they just seem to pose more of a risk for fire in my opinion. I need something that will come on and off to keep the room at a certain temp. This will be used in a room where my birds are as well as my bedroom (I need two) where three of my birds are. more

Resolved Question: De-Humidifier or Electric Heater - which is cheapest?

Can anyone (UK) please give me a guide as to which is the cheapest to run, l) a small de-humidifier or 2) a small De Longhi portable radiator type heater on its lowest setting. The present de-humidifier runs day and night and has to be emptied twice a day (approximately 1.5 ltrs each time). I am thinking it might be better to have some background heating on all the time INSTEAD but am worried about the cost. more

Resolved Question: facts about men xx true or false xx giving the chance to have a go back at us sorry guys xxx?

Men are brave enough to go to war, but they are not brave enough to get a bikini wax. Men don't get cellulite. God might just be a man. Men have an easier time buying bathing suits. Women have two types: depressing and more depressing. Men have two types: nerdy and not nerdy. Men have higher body temperatures than women. If your heating goes out in winter, I recommend sleeping next to a man. Men are like portable heaters that snore. Women take clothing much more seriously than men. If a man prepares dinner for you and the salad contains three or more types of lettuce, he is seriousMen who listen to classical music tend not to spit. Only men who have worn a ski suit understand how complicated it is for a woman to go to the bathroom when she's wearing a jumpsuit. Men don't feel the urge to get married as quickly as women do because their clothes all button and zip in the front. Women's dresses usually button and zip in the back. We need men emotionally and sexually, but we also need men to help us get dressed. Men are self-confident because they grow up identifying with superheroes. Women have bad self-images because they grow up identifying with Barbie. When a woman tries on clothing from her closet that feels tight, she will assume she has gained weight. When a man tries something from his closet that feels tight, he will assume the clothing has shrunk. Male menopause is a lot more fun than female menopause. With female menopause you gain weight and get hot flashes. Male menopause - you get to date young girls and drive motorcycles.Men like to barbecue. Men will cook if danger is involved. Men who have pierced ears are better prepared for marriage. They've experienced pain and bought jewelry. Be careful of men who are bald and rich; the arrogance of "rich" usually cancels out the nice of "bald." Marrying a divorced man is ecologically responsible. In a world where there are more women than men, it pays to recycle. Men are very confident people. My husband is so confident that when he watches sports on television, he thinks that if he concentrates he can help his team. If the team is in trouble, he coaches the players from our living room, and if they're really in trouble, I have to get off the phone incase they call him. If it's attention you want, don't get involved with a man during play-off season. Men like phones with lots of buttons. It makes them feel important. Men love to be the first to read the newspaper in the morning. Not being the first is upsetting to their psyches. more

Resolved Question: Where do you get the heat lamps they use in industrial buildings?

Would like to buy and install one of those industrial type heat lamps - like the ones that you walk under at the front door when you go into a Costco or other large shopping building. We have a ten year old Ridgeback and Doberman and last winter they spent the days and nights in the basement when it got below freezing- I would leave one of the portable heaters on that turn off if you knock them over. My husband picked up a puppy from the pound and I am now back working so we do not trust to leave the heater on with the crazyness of the new puppy- but the Doberman has arthritis so i'd like to get some heat going in the basement. We thought a large heat lamp we could install above them would work great. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: Anyone using a "portable" home AC / heater unit?

I'm thinking of purchasing one of the "newest" designs in a long list of these portable(on wheels) type AC / heater. These look very similar to large dehumidifiers. They have many more choices available now , and the prices have come down too since they first came into stores. These all have to be vented out of a window with a "kit" that is included. They use a 4 inch flexible dryer hose. They now range in BTU output from 7,000 to 14,000!All digital controls and of course a remote control !! lol And yet they are so efficient they still run on 120 volts and draw about 10-12 Amps. I need the large (14K) for my application. They are $550. I have no problem spending that amount if these perform as promised. Sooooo......finally my question> does anyone have one of these ? Are you satisfied with it? What brand did you choose? Thanks!! Sorry for being a little lengthy ! more

Resolved Question: shower pump or other type of pump?

Hi I have a large capacity portable instant water heater (the type used to heat water for coffees in a hot dog van) and no other source of hot water. I want to find a way to cyphon / suck / pump this water up to a shower head to create an improvised shower. I am quite happy to heat the water to the desired temperature first - so that is not the problem. Essentially, how do I turn a small reservoir of heated. ready-to-use water into a shower spray? Any ideas / tips / leads on what I need to do this? I live in an industrial building on a shorthold tenancy so therefore would like as little hassle & expense as possible, and would like to be able to do the job myself. And, the more "portable" the better (so I can take it with me when I leave - also, so I can fairly easily change which room it is in if needs be.) Please note I am in the UK so no Americentric answers please! Appreciate all your help.... more

Resolved Question: Power storage?

Is there any kind of a portable device (reasonable weight and size) that I can store power in it and use it at a later time, as oppose to flow through type such as a generator, or a power invertor. I am particularly asking for something that can be used, lets say your car breaks down in the middle of the night, in a remote area. If you are carrying a small ceramic heater, and if what I am asking for does exist, one could sit tight till sunrise. more
