Portable Camp Heaters Questions asked

Resolved Question: Are those portable camping gas heaters easy to operate and safe to use?

I got one for emergencies such as power cuts. Anyway I got as far as installing a canister of butane, following the instructions, but it hissed a lot and I smelled a lot of gas in the room. I didn't want to risk testing the ignition, and opened the window to let the fumes out. I'm concerned about using it if that happens each time you put a cartridge in.You seem to have to do a lot of things at the same time and quickly to get it ignited. You have to pull a ring as well as turning the knob anti clockwise, but at the same time gas was hissing out all over the place so I didn't risk attemting to light. I took cartridge out. This is a pic of the type of heater it is http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/images/product/main/HIGEAR-HEATER.jpgLOL yeah I suppose it's like anything first time attempting to use. I must have got the sequence wrong or turned knob too far or something. Room was full of gas, stinks horrible as well but gone now. I have plenty of spare cans cause it came with a pack of 8. more

Resolved Question: Portable Generator Purchase Decision?

I'm looking to purchase a portable generator about 5,000 watts. Can someone give me a good , reliable , and very common brand that would be easy to get parts for ( if needed ) not just engine parts but the generator as well. I don't really know briggs & stratton"s reputation these days but I know I still see the older motors going even today. I'd like to spend under $ 500.00 but really under $350.00 ideally.. Any suggestions would be appreciated. There are just so many out there. Eastern Tool, Northern, Briggs, Troy Built etc...etc... I would be using this for my cottage apartment as well as "out on the road" for use with an automotive battery charger, Electric impact gun, and any type of camping needs. The higest consumer I can think of would be a portable electric heater at 1500w... I really don't need industrial. Thanks A model number would be great....heck, even a place to buy.Great advice. I figured in an emergency situation I might need (two) 1500 watt electric heaters for my apartment plus a light and maybe a small appliance. In fact, I could probably get away with a 2000 or 2500 watt generator if I use only one heater and a light . I don't want a lot of noise so it looks like I should really consider the Honda engine.. I'll keep doing my homework for a few more days... Thanks all... more

Resolved Question: Im traveling from southern ontario to southern alberta, IN A VAN, IN OCTOBER!!! AM I CRAZY!!!?

Average size work van, its insulated, i did the work to it, V6, im going to build a bed in it, run a lot of power( also some wind power). im starting my drive from port dover ontario and continuing north until i hit the trans canada hwy, take it west till calgary, and looking for work there. Along the way i will do A LOT of sight seeing, camp in the van, cook as normal with my gear, take some back roads. One stop i want to make is bungee jumping, i really want to do that! My question is is this possible? I will have lots of heat i think along with my portable heater right? Also, this is important, im in dire need of great place to stop and see, you know? the things that make CANADA Canada? One last thing, were can i bungee jump? more

Resolved Question: Will a fire and a fan heat a tent?

You're camping and it gets chilly. Whats the best way to heat your tent? Could you build a fire outside of the doorway and place a fan in between to have it blow the warm air inside? Will the tent have enough insulation? Or will the heated air dissipate by the time it even reaches your face? What are some good ways to heat a tent WITHOUT using a portable heater that uses 1000 watts of electricity, or gas / oil?Answer 1 ... cool answer, I never thought of that and it was the only reasonable answer I had at the time. Will be considered. Possibly using those Nu-Wick candles. Answer 2 ... very intuitive, never thought of that. Wouldnt use that method though but nice alternative. Answer 3 ... Im familiar with survival techniques as well and this is what I would do if I built a primitive shelter like a lean-to or a trench. But a tent would be more permanent over that spot and in the winter it might not be as comfortable. The answer I was actually looking for I eventually found is a wood stove placed in your tent believe it or not. I dont exactly know how the pipe will exit the tent but that is something Im going to research right now ... You can also buy a small propane powered stove that has flexible pipes leading out the doorway. In case anybody out there is reasearching this answer for answers of their own. My choice is a lightweight wood stove with oven and shelf accessory. more

Resolved Question: What is the cheapest and least energy consuming device or method to heat a room or tent?

One thing I dont understand is there are a gazillion ways to produce heat yet heat is still very expensive. Heat can be produced from solar, electricity, fire, oil, gas, geothermal, friction, movement, crystal, radiation, bacteria, pressure, and even uranium! And that doesnt include the many ways we have of trapping, and transfering heat. Is it really that hard to find a cheap form of heating? I just wanted to point that out. Now on with the question ... I notice most portable heaters consume 750 watts low setting, 1500+ watts for a higher setting. This is very energy consuming. ARE THERE ANY DEVICES OUT THERE THAT CAN HEAT A ROOM USING 100 WATTS OF ELECTRICITY? If an element is capable of giving off free heat, why cant we find the next "hottest" thing? Its the 21st century and it seems we're paying more than what they used for heating thousands of years ago. Wood was free back then. Oil, gas, and electricity is not. Without using oil and gas which burning any garbage will give you the same output, where are we with electrical heating? IS 1000 WATTS THE BEST WE HAVE DONE IN HEATING A SIMPLE ROOM? Any other alternatives out there? Like a portable wood stove? I suppose this question should be in regards to camping. What is the best way to heat a tent for example? Could you light a fire outside and have a fan blow in the heat? Or how about a portable wood stove? If theres an electric heater that can be powered using solar panels, then thats what I would like to find out. Thanks guys === more

Resolved Question: COLD sleeping bags.....Any opinions???? WINTER CAMPING?

ok, well im planning on doing some winter camping/ice fishing this year in northern wisconsin. I will have a large portable ice shanty and heater . but what would be the best sleeping bag i could buy for these types of temperatures. It gets below zero in january but in december im expecting it to only be in the teens on average. I found a nice Coleman square sleeping bag at Fleet Farm rated -5 degrees. $59.99 but does this mean it is comfortable in -5 degree cold? the chart on the box seemed a bit misguiding saying that the comfort temp was 20-30 i think. and below that was dangerous/extreme cold. ???? I know ill have a shanty and heater but i dont want to rely solely on that. anyone have any good suggestions for sleeping bags under $80??? thanks more
