Resolved Question: Which is more economical - using out central heat that uses propane or using several electric portable heaters?
The home that my husband and I moved into two years ago that runs off of propane. Our propane tank is 250 gallons and it cost us $525 to have it filled up about a month ago. Having spent over $1600 on propane over the course of four months during our first winter here, we decided it would save us money to invest in electric, portable heaters. We have a larger home (2200 sq. foot), our living room is about 500 sq. feet with 18 ft. ceilings so it has been difficult finding anything portable that can efficiently heat that space but have been using a small, portable, electric fireplace, along with a radiator type heater in the master bathroom, which also is the heat source for the master bedroom, a larger, ceramic heater with a thermostat in the hallway where our children's rooms are located and one small, tabletop, ceramic heater in my oldest son's room. These heaters are only on when we're home and when we're awake. They are shut off at night and when we're not home. We purchased some electric blankets for our children's beds that have a 10 hr. auto shutoff feature but I'm overly paranoid about fires so I always shut them off before I go to bed. Anyway, long story short, latest propane bill was $525.00 to fill up the tank. It would probably last about two months if we used our central heat as our sole heat source. Our most recent electric bill was $250.00, which is the highest it has been since July. So obviously, either way we go, it's not going to be cheap. I'm just wondering if there's something out there that's great at heating larger areas, that's safe to have around children, low cost and efficient, that doesn't require renovating your home to install it. Any suggestions? At this point, I'd rather just strictly use the central heat. It might cost us $500+ every couple of months but at least we'd be warm and I'd have my piece of mind at night. My husband on the other hand prefers to leave the heat off altogether because he hates that propane bill.Incidentally, we installed a programmable thermostat today hoping that would help.

Even though this is very basic and silly I have thought about setting up a garden shed in my parents backyard that I could put a cott or bed in. This way I could have some privacy and space from my parents. My laptop has wireless internet. Since the wooden garden shed would have electricity I could pug in a electric portable heater.
The shed would have a concrete floor that I could put rugs on.
The only disadvantage to the shed would be no windows inside or restroom inside. I could go inside the restroom inside the house.
I'm not hand enough to install windows. The inside of the shed would have a wood panel wall and a door that is unpainted. To solve the window solution I could paint the inside of the door a color or design that is something nice to look at.
On thing that may bother me is closing the door while inside at night sleeping. I guess I could get over that.
My parents house is located in a very safe area.
The backyard is gated and fenced.
I'm in my late 20s. We don't have a basement in our house. This garden shed has a locking door and is very hard to break into.
The shed would only be for some nights not every night.
I could close the door. While sleeping you want it dark anyway. If I would feel relaxed enough to sleep it wouldn't bother me if the door was closed. If I'm awake and can't sleep than it would bother me to have the door closed.
If I listen to calm music on my Ipod for 10 minutes it puts me to sleep.
This sounds cool but many people think its very silly. Even if its just for two night- tree nights per week.
I guess being inside a building with a door with a bright painted mural and painted walls without windows could be an interesting experience.
Since this buildings entrance is to the outside I guess the door to the building has to be closed at night while sleeping.I could have a small refridgerator and hot plate in their.

Currently I'm out of work with the bad economy. Rents in my area a very very high. Try $1500 or more for a one bedroom apartment

A renting a room in my ares would be around $900 per month.

We have a fully underground basement. Walls are poured concrete. Ceilings 8'. Approx 1500 sq feet. 1500 sq feet finished. Elec furnace. Three heat vents open in basement.
In the summer it is fab to go down there to escape the heat but in the winter it is chilly enough that the kids won't ever go down. I'd guess the temp with just the heat vents open to be maybe 55-60F.
What is a safe and quick way to heat the area? I only want to heat it on occassion to about 70F. I have 2 small electric, portable space heaters but they take forever & don't get the space much warmer. I'm wondering if something like Eden Pure or possibly a ventless fireplace would do the trick.
On days like today, when we are totally snowed in, it is so much better for the sanity of the entire family if they are down there playing away! :)
Should also add that I am scared to death to handle anything that uses any fuel (propane) so that it is probably not a good option for me.

I have two great, new, oil-filled plug-in electric radiators. Most of the time I use them on and off, because it's more economical for me to use them at night, for example, in my bedroom and in the kitchen (to keep pipes from freezing) instead of heating the entire house the regular way, which is with forced hot air coming thru a natural-gas-fed furnace in the basement. I'm going away for 2 and half weeks, it's really really cold, and i HATE the idea of having to leave the furnace thermostat set "on" while I'm away, with those zillions of gas dollars going out the window. But i don't want my pipes to freeze, and it's not economical to get the plumber to drain pipes and set 'em back up again just for this short period, either. SO, QUESTION: Is it safe to leave two brand-new oil-filled portable heaters plugged in, on a low setting, for two and a half weeks? They don't get warm or anything in the socket (I check all the time to be safe). One in kitchen, one in bath, for pipes' sake?
