I rent and my rent is very cheap (renting from family who are willing to lose income on the rental because they got burned too many times by tenants who trashed the place). The house is in OK condition but is old. It has ABSOLUTELY no insulation. Getting better windows and wall insulation is NOT an option (we can't afford it and neither can the family who owns the place - we have cheaper rent here than we would elsewhere in town and more space). We have old wooden framed windows that can be hard to open (no ropes, just sliding wood on wood). Two of our windows, bathroom and kitchen, are jalousie style (http://www.hometips.com/images/hyhw/shell/144louvered.gif). We have rubber seals for the edges but that just seals part of the draft. Our front door has such a big gap under it that leaves blow in under it. We can't add any weather sealing to the bottom because the carpet goes too high immediately on the other side of the door. The crawlspace has zero insulation - many repairmen/cable guys have commented on it, the walls have nothing in there either (plaster walls). We have one of those spinning vents on top of the house and a wall heater in the living room. During winter, we have space heaters to heat individual rooms and the wall heater does do an OK job on the rest of the house. It has 3 modes - on, off w/ pilot, and off without pilot. So we let it get 'too hot' then turn it off and let the drafts cool the room back down. Its managable in winter. We live in coastal, central California so its usually in the mid 40s and rarely gets down in the 30s. It doesn't even get too hot most of the year, the problem is that the house gets very hot inside. We can't leave windows open when we aren't home and it takes a while to cool it down when we do get home. We bought a portable AC unit last year out of desperation, but you only feel the effect if you are sitting within 4 feet of it. We have animals at home in the daytime and we'll put ice in their water, check on them at lunch etc but I'd like to find a better solution to cooling our house. We don't have the skills to do a lot of work ourselves and don't have the money to hire someone. The family who owns the house lost their own home in a local wildfire and are very strapped for cash as they try to rebuild (and honestly if they were going to do work on this house, they should probably start with the termites and not worry about replacing windows etc just yet). This area is too expensive for us to buy just now, the prices didn't come down much with the crash and a mobile home costs $500K minimum. The nearest towns are 1hr+ commute but there is only 1 way in and out of town so the smallest accident can make a commute 2-4 hours easily and the houses out there are $400k-800K easily. We both work in this town and moving is probably inevitable long-term but we have very good jobs and this economy is not a good time for both of us to be looking for new jobs just to move. Any thoughts/suggestions?? moreResolved Question: Why do portable heaters and cookers need a lot more air than a fitted fire?
I need help with this question which was on my homework sheet... moreVoting Question: Confused about what happened.. (Computer, Power Outage)?
This all happened to my boyfriend while I was asleep so I'm trying to piece it back together from when he woke me up. He was on my desktop computer when the power went out twice, The computer is going from a power strip to a fairly old socket (only 2 prongs, not 3) that we've tried our best to "ground" without much electrical experience. It's been this way for about 2 years. No problems. Anyways, it wasn't just the computer that went out, but the entire house. He said he heard some kind of squeaking where the wall socket is. Not a buzz, but a squeak! First thing I thought was maybe a mouse started chewing, but he said it went on for a bit till he figured out where it was coming from and unplugged everything from that wall and turned off the overhead fan which I guess somehow goes to that wall as well. The power is back on now, I wasn't awake when it happened and hes asleep now so I don't know how long it was out the two times it happened. I do know the breaker didn't trip (old screw in type). I need my computer to work in a few hours (this laptop doesn't have my programs on it) and I'm considering putting it on a heavy duty orange extension cord and running it to the kitchen like we have been this winter a few times for our portable heater. The heater we used in this way says 1500V and I just want to make sure my computer or the plug in the kitchen won't have any issues with this like tripping something or starting a fire LOL. The plug in the kitchen is the only free 3 prong plug in the house so I trust it more than anything else in the bedroom. I'll probably need to keep it this way for about a week or so till we can have an electrician come out to take a look. Any thoughts on both issues would be appreciated. moreResolved Question: Do Portable Home heaters release any harmful chemicals?
My house is really cold, so i keep this heater in my room, Its called a SOLEUSAIR, which im guessing is one of the cheap ones at Walmart or something, but i noticed that everytime is on i get this headache or this feeling like my head is stuffy....And This only happens when my heater is ON, when i Turn it Off, it goes away. Im wondering if Portable heaters release some kind of chemical in the air thats causing the headaches? moreResolved Question: Why does my portable gas heater keep poing out?
I got a new portable gas heater and it worked great the first few days. Now though the panels seem to go from orange back to a whiteish blue colour but the flame doesn't go out. When this happens it doesn't give off the same heat. I've kept the windows open all day in case it's to do with ventilation but it's getting too cold to keep them open and the heater is still not working! The main question should say "Why does my portable gas heater keep going out?" oops! moreResolved Question: Which costs more to heat with, electric baseboard or ceramic floor heater ? please read:?

You know those cans of air you buy to spray onto your computer keyboard or screen to clean and remove from dust? I bought one of those and it says on the can it contains "moisture free gas" and then it lists all of these dangers such as if inhaled it could lead to cardiac arrest and death and that it could lead to chemical pneumonia. and that it can explode if heated. We are all worried now because we have one of those small portable heater things, and on the back of the heater there was A LOT of collected dust. So my brilliant kid thought it would be a good idea to clean the dust off with the spray when the heater was turned off. Nothing happened but the heater now smells like somethings burning when we turn it on. We left it on for about half an hour and the smell gradually got better. Do we need to throw out the portable heater now? We don't want to inhale the spray or have the thing explode! Any suggestions please??! Help! moreResolved Question: radiators? what type is best?

So, a wall in my living room is falling down. When the ll came to look at it 3 wks ago he said it was no big deal, just normal wear & tear. Last night my bf spoke to him about fixing it since we have heard nothing in the past 3 weeks, and he claims that we have an electric space heater in the apt. that apparently we have turned up so high, that it is causing the wall to fall apart, by melting the paint. We do not even own an electric heater, let alone have one in our apartment. He is just trying to milk us for money for the repairs. My question is this. Can a portable electric space heater get hot enough to melt the paint off the walls? Also, how can I prove, fight his claim that we have an electric heater when we do not. It's going through a lot of fuel, much more than it should be, and it's not really warming up much, It says it will warm up 1000 square feet. I doubt we have 800 sf. The flame on the wick is not consisten, some parts are not burning. We still have to use a space heater. I just don't know how to fix it, or what to look for. I'm using kerosene k1 clear that cost $4 a gallon! moreResolved Question: I think I may be anemic? Please help!?
I think I may be anemic, but I'm not sure. I'm 14 years old, female, 103 pounds and about 5'3 or 5'4 (somewhere around there), is this too young to develop anemia? The reasons I think I may be are.. 1. I'm always really cold. Especially my hands and feet. Even with many layers on, Im usually shivering. 2. My hands also are usually a purple colour, they turn really purple when I'm out of my home in public (kind of strange I thought) 3. I've been told that i'm pale. Some people have said that I look dead almost 4. I get very tired very easily. When I come home from school I often fall asleep on my floor in front of a portable heater. 5. I feel quite weak most of the time. 6. I'm often quite irritable 7. Sometimes I get random dizzy spells and lightheadedness. Not as often as any of my other "symptoms", but it still happens. 8. I often have trouble concentrating on my work at school, and am very easily distracted. I also have memory problems. 9. I do become short of breath and have troubles breathing sometimes, but I figure it's from lack of exercise. I'm not a big one for sports :P Sorry if the post is really long, I just need help. My parents don't believe there could be anything wrong with me, I'd just like to get some opinions. Could I be anemic? If I am what could I do? If I'm not do you think there's something else wrong with me? Is there anymore information that I can give? Please don't answer "see a doctor" moreResolved Question: Is a portable electrical heater in my room sufficient for heating during winter in Melbourne, Australia?

I have an electrician coming over tomorrow but decided to ask this to see if anyone may have a good "heads up" for me before he shows. In one particular outlet in the house, when I plug an appliance into it after a while the power goes out in part of the house. I go outside turn all the breakers off then on, and then everything is ok. It only happens if I have other things on at the same time. For example, lights, tv, computer, etc. If I sat in the dark for example with a portable heater plugged in that outlet, nothing happens. Any ideas of the possible causes? moreResolved Question: If you sit too close to a portable room heater, will it fade the color of your clothes?
You know, one of those little portable red-coil jobs that you put in a single room to warm it up a bit. What if you sit very close to one every day? We're renting a house that has 90% of the place on one breaker We can't have 2 portable heaters going at once, which we need because the ceiling has little to no insulation. I'm in Michigan. It's a 2-car garage that is very well insulated with no plumbing. I only need to heat once in a while when I want to work on a car or something, maybe once a week if that. Would like to stay inexpensive and perhaps portable. A friend recommended a kerosene heater (a torpedo-type deal). Is that okay for an enclosed space? THANKS!Should add that I have electricity (plenty) there, but no natural gas or other fuel source available. moreResolved Question: People who say their house is too big...?
When I lived in a small apartment, when I heard people on TV say that they want to move because their house is too big, I understood that it probably meant it took longer to clean which is why they wanted to move. Now I am a homeowner and there are a couple of rooms I never use, and all I do is take a few minutes to vacuum them since they are still spotless clean since I am never in those rooms. So why do people say that their house is too big if you do not use the space then it doesn't bother you. Unless these people use central heat and AC and it makes their bills higher? I use portable heaters and fans to save a lot of electricity so I do not have that problem if that is the case. moreVoting Question: A cheap portable rechargeable heater blanket?

So about last week, on January 15, 2010, I injured my foot. Well, I somehow got my last toe caught behind the portable heater in my room and as I continued walking, the skin between that toe and the one next to it tore open. This was extremely painful and the tear was pretty deep, like 1/3 of a centimeter. I expected this to scab up and heal within a few days, but it has been SEVEN days and no scab has formed. This is also worrying me because the wound does not seem to be healing, as I can still see that the two sides of the skin that tore apart has not "reconnected" with each other. It just looks like an open wound, but it only hurts when I apply pressure to it. I am worried that I need stitches, as the wound is not a "clean cut" (like a cut with a knife), but it seems that the wound isn't deep enough to require stitches. I am wondering, why is the wound not healing and connecting back with each other? My mom suggested that I apply Neosporin on it several times a day but this does not seem to be working. moreResolved Question: Best way to heat this room (short of setting it on fire) :)?
Our master bath has a toilet and shower and is separated from the main master bath in a small room (5' x 8' I believe) with 3 exterior walls. Actually, it's exposed on 5 sides...north (8' wall), west and east (5' walls) roof above and garage underneath. Needless to say it gets very cold in there. We are thinking about remodeling that room as well as the main part of the master bath. I am ok with tearing down the E,W, &N walls and adding insulation as well as replacing a somewhat drafty window on that north wall but I think we are still going to need some kind of heater in there. Being a room with just a toilet and shower, there are no electrical receptacles (building code). However, there are a couple of walls switches (light & fan) that I could tap into if necessary since I will be removing the drywall. I also installed a heat lamp but the ceiling is 8' so it's not very effective. I am out of ideas. Anyone out there have some ideas of how to warm up this room? Currently, we are using a portable heater to heat the room before we shower...it was 52 degrees in there this morning!!! moreResolved Question: Does using fans in the summer and portable heaters in the winter really cut down energy costs? Thanks! moreResolved Question: California space heater restriction?
I want to buy a replacement space heater for my mobile home, the propane wall heater is pretty old so I would like something more efficient. I bought a Mr.Heater brand "big buddy" heater for my workshop and was impressed by how well the ceramic radiant design worked. When I went to purchase a similar heater with larger capacity I found it is "Not for sale in California". However the other 49 states allow these same heaters. Searching the net the only thing I can find is to get approved in California the manufacturer pays for testing. Both heaters are CSA/AGA certified, might even be CE certified. Both heaters could be classified as portable since the larger one is available free standing not wall mounted. I could go with one of the direct vent heaters but I have no place to install it with enough wall space and clearance w/o completely turning the room or rooms around. A replacement for the wall heater seems to be about 10 times the price. Suggestions, the following are links to all three heaters. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200307957_200307957?cm_sp=Xsells-_-Manual-_-Product%20Page http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200332739_200332739?cm_sp=Xsells-_-Manual-_-Product%20Page http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200362089_200362089?cm_sp=Xsells-_-Manual-_-Product%20Page moreResolved Question: Pilot light problem on an LPG portable room heater?
I have a problem with the pilot light being about 3 inches long, yellow in colour and burning half way up the ceramic tile. I created a floor plan for a room I'll be rearranging in an online creator and would like to know what you think. It will be my new room - live with parents and grandparents, still studying, 20 yrs. This is the link: http://www.zkracovatko.cz/dy3 I would like to comment on some things because they may not be clear due to limits the creator has: The left wall is actually to the east. The door leads to a balcony and is made of glass. The top wall leads to south. The door on the bottom leads to the bathroom, the door on the right wall leads to the rest of the flat. The irregularity next to it is where the chimney goes in the wall. The dark objects under windows symbolize heaters. The desk in the left-top corner consists of two parts, in fact. The computer is positioned so I can watch movies on it from the bed or from the armchair. The bed is in the corner because I like it this way - makes me feel secure. There is going to be a storage box under it for stuff I use rarely or which I'm sorry to throw out. It is a double bed, but I live alone. I want space. There will be shelves above it, where I'd keep my books and little before-sleep stuff. And a small light over the head. Below there will be a space with a mirror on the wall and a small shelf under it for make-up. The wardrobe next to it will be where I keep my accessories, jewelry, beauty stuff and fabrics. I can move a chair from the desk there. The line of shelves next to this is there to round the whole room and avoid stressing corner-to-corner. There I'd keep work in progress to have it in sight and motivate me to finish it. Opposite to it is a chair where I'd do my handwork - beading, embroidery, hand sewing. I can watch movies while doing this on the computer. Above it there are shelves with stuff I need for this, my portable sewing mashine I can put on the desk and a little reading-lamp. Next to it is a small table I can put things on when I need them at hand. Before it there's an oval coffee table (again, no corner to corner) that can be moved next to the bed if I need space to lay a big piece of fabric on the ground. In the bottom-left corner there is a wardrobe with clothes. Don't take the colors too seriously. I do prefer light wood and warm orangeish colors, but this is too much. moreResolved Question: What is the best way to heat my apartment and save money?
I live in Ohio, in a one-bedroom rental in an old house. My heating is a mix of hot water radiators that keep the temperature at about 66 degrees, and 40-year-old Singer baseboard heaters to supplement them. I also have a portable furnace/infrared heater. I pay for electric, but not hot water. My electric rate is $.00584/KWH. So far, my electric bills have been quite reasonable -- about $25 per month, even this December. But I've only been using the infrared portable furnace when I'm in the living room and have only turned on the electric baseboard in the bedroom for about an hour at a time, to heat it up before bed or in the morning. It's gotten to the point, though, that it's too cold to have no heat on in the bedroom. The portable furnace's fan wakes me up, which rules it out as an option. Should I keep the baseboard in the bedroom running all the time, or would that run up a huge electric bill? I'm a grad student and want to keep my bill under $100. What's the best way to heat my place?I should add that my landlady is a complete slumlord who legally gets around having to heat my apartment to a tolerable 68 degrees by having these prehistoric electric baseboards installed and billing the place as "a mix of electric and radiators."
