Portable Propane Heaters Questions asked

Resolved Question: California space heater restriction?

I want to buy a replacement space heater for my mobile home, the propane wall heater is pretty old so I would like something more efficient. I bought a Mr.Heater brand "big buddy" heater for my workshop and was impressed by how well the ceramic radiant design worked. When I went to purchase a similar heater with larger capacity I found it is "Not for sale in California". However the other 49 states allow these same heaters. Searching the net the only thing I can find is to get approved in California the manufacturer pays for testing. Both heaters are CSA/AGA certified, might even be CE certified. Both heaters could be classified as portable since the larger one is available free standing not wall mounted. I could go with one of the direct vent heaters but I have no place to install it with enough wall space and clearance w/o completely turning the room or rooms around. A replacement for the wall heater seems to be about 10 times the price. Suggestions, the following are links to all three heaters. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200307957_200307957?cm_sp=Xsells-_-Manual-_-Product%20Page http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200332739_200332739?cm_sp=Xsells-_-Manual-_-Product%20Page http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200362089_200362089?cm_sp=Xsells-_-Manual-_-Product%20Page more

Resolved Question: What's the rumbling noise I hear from the outdoor unit when I turn the heat on?

The AC unit is about 15 years old and is an all in one unit outside which has the gas is feeding into it. Just recently, when the flames ignite, we can hear a low rumble/banging noise coming from the unit. If this helps as to what it sounds like, my wife though I had shoes in the dryer. The sound is a bit more muffled than that though. I went outside and it sound like is air blowing over the flames kind of like you'd hear in one of those tubular portable propane heaters. A) Could this just be dirty nozzles? B) Would that possibly allow air to mix with the natural gas as it's burning and make that sound? The instant the gas goes off (with the blower still running) the noise stops. C) Is there any risk to continue running the system until someone comes out? It's only in the teens this week. Thank youThank you for saving our lives. more

Resolved Question: Can I get a conversion kit for this propane heater?

Can I get a conversion kit for this propane heater? A few years ago I bought a Dyna-Glo double burner Tag-a-long Portable propane heater Model# RMC-1601SS. Right now it takes the small disposable tanks like what you would buy at wall mart. But I was wondering if you can hook this up to one of the big 20lb tanks with a conversion kit and if so where can I find one. I can not find a web site for Dyna-glow and can not find a conversion kit anywhere on the net. Can someone help me out? more

Resolved Question: What would be the best type of portable heater to use in a power outage in my small home? Propane or Kerosene?

We've had a few power outages with severe winter storms in the last couple years, I'd like to get a smaller size heater to heat up a couple rooms if I'm left without power for a couple days. As a female, I'm looking for safety but also want it to not cost too much. I've seen small propane heaters at Lowe's for around $70 that come with a small propane tank and you can buy extra, but not sure if Kerosene would be a better choice. (Of course I will have a fire extenguisher nearby and it would only be used when I was iced in at my home and there to monitor it). Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How to bring heat to tack room?

I have a barn and 10 acres about 15 minutes from my house. It is starting to cold! The only real shelter from the cold is my tack room. Its about 12ftx12ft. It is completely sheet rocked and insulated. My problem lies with the only electricity for the barn is solar power! It is also on DC power. There is not enough energy for an electric heater. So I have to use some kind of portable heater that runs off of something other then electricity. So my options are propane, butane and karoseen. I am worried about fire risk, and fumes. Which is the safest and most economical? I spend almost every waking moment at the barn, and riding horses. I live in Texas so the cold is not that extreme, but it is still cold. more

Resolved Question: Is there an adapter that allows 2 propane tanks to be used on one single system?

The propane tank on my RV is not removable, I have just parked it in my yard for the winter. I still plan to work on it and use the propane heater but don't want to have to drive to the station each time I need the tank filled. So I began searching for a tee that will allow me to leave the on board tank connected while also allowing me to connect a portable tank sitting next to the RV as needed. I found a couple tee's online and at Lowes and Home Depot, but they are made to use one single tank to feed two systems i.e. bbq and heater. I am looking for the opposite that will allow me to feed a single system with the ability to switch between two separate tanks. Here is a photo of my current setup: http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/75/l_49b1d6f408354b57bfa4622e17f08aa3.jpg I drew this to visually explain what I want to do: http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/107/l_808214f3879949c4a34c2873fceb6924.jpg Does this item I am looking for exist? Links? ThanksAll tees are not made alike when it comes to propane. The tee I first found incorporates one way check valves allowing the propane to flow into one and out the other two. I need one that allows propane in two thirds of the tee and out the other, with the correct connections for the setup on the picture I posted. more

Resolved Question: Hurricane Preparation Tips?

My husband and I moved to Florida in October and we are nearing the beginning of hurricane season. My husband has assured me that hurricanes are nothing to worry about where we are, as we are about 60 miles inland. (I've never lived in the south, I'm from Maine, he lived here before joining the Navy). I understand that we need to have canned food on hand, in case the stores are all closed up but...how much should I have on hand. Our stove is powered by propane, as is our water heater, do I need to get a portable stove as well? What tips can you offer to help me prepare for hurricane season?I'd rather be overly worrisome and have what I need in case one hits us hard than go hungry or thirsty when it actually happens. more

Resolved Question: Which is more economical - using out central heat that uses propane or using several electric portable heaters?

The home that my husband and I moved into two years ago that runs off of propane. Our propane tank is 250 gallons and it cost us $525 to have it filled up about a month ago. Having spent over $1600 on propane over the course of four months during our first winter here, we decided it would save us money to invest in electric, portable heaters. We have a larger home (2200 sq. foot), our living room is about 500 sq. feet with 18 ft. ceilings so it has been difficult finding anything portable that can efficiently heat that space but have been using a small, portable, electric fireplace, along with a radiator type heater in the master bathroom, which also is the heat source for the master bedroom, a larger, ceramic heater with a thermostat in the hallway where our children's rooms are located and one small, tabletop, ceramic heater in my oldest son's room. These heaters are only on when we're home and when we're awake. They are shut off at night and when we're not home. We purchased some electric blankets for our children's beds that have a 10 hr. auto shutoff feature but I'm overly paranoid about fires so I always shut them off before I go to bed. Anyway, long story short, latest propane bill was $525.00 to fill up the tank. It would probably last about two months if we used our central heat as our sole heat source. Our most recent electric bill was $250.00, which is the highest it has been since July. So obviously, either way we go, it's not going to be cheap. I'm just wondering if there's something out there that's great at heating larger areas, that's safe to have around children, low cost and efficient, that doesn't require renovating your home to install it. Any suggestions? At this point, I'd rather just strictly use the central heat. It might cost us $500+ every couple of months but at least we'd be warm and I'd have my piece of mind at night. My husband on the other hand prefers to leave the heat off altogether because he hates that propane bill.Incidentally, we installed a programmable thermostat today hoping that would help. more

Voting Question: portable home heater that runs on batteries?

we've looked on google and couldn't find anything close to what we're looking for. we've been searching for a type of heater that runs on batteries rather than electricity (for when the power goes out). not gas/propane powered etc. just batteries. any ideas on what exactly to look for? or do you own one? or know where to get one? ...anything you've got is helpful, thank you. :)naw, we're not quite looking for something that'll work as well as a fire or indoor heating -- just something that we can sit around and keep us warm. it doesn't have to be large or anything. but still, thanks.yeah we weren't sure IF such a thing existed, but we were hoping there might be something out there; might be something that didn't require a generator of sorts etc. but thank you.wow, great explination. thank you very much. i think we're pretty convinced -- looking for something simple (and hopefully cheap) like this is obviously too good to be true. i think we'll just stick to blankets. thank you. :) more

Resolved Question: What can I do to keep the car windshield from fogging up?

My heater core went out and need to get by somehow while I save for this really expensive repair job. The small 12v ceramic heaters are useless, I've been using a portable propane heater, helps a little if you have someone hold it while you drive, doesn't help when driving alone 'cause it shuts off with the car moving. Not to mention I melted the corner of my shifter holding it to close. I was trying to find an auxilary heater for an old VW beetle, can't find one? Would keeping the inside cold help more than heating it? Any suggestions?Deadite2...I wanted heat and you gave it to me...I have so much I could probably cook Christmas dinner it there...LMAO Great job, Thank you, your awesome and Kudos from us all! The ancient...wow, I would have never guessed that I've been shaving with an anti-fog product, I tried it on the bathroom mirror (because I doubted) and it worked...how awesome is that!...Thanks! Resolved Question: I just asked a question about the fire codes for my propane heater...?

The answerer said not to use propane heaters inside. This isn't a portable unit. It is an installed unit. Ranai (sp)? That should be safe, right. We have carbon monoxide detectors. Does this mean that my dresser is in fact a fire hazard. If so does anyone know how far away it needs to be in order to be safe. It is an older model. We just had a new installed at the other end of the house and the heating guy said just not to put stuff right in front of it. Is there a difference in models? I am so confused. more

But I can not afford to repair the in built heater. What is the alternative method I can go for? Is there anything like portable heater? 1)if it is a battery operated one, I can charge in my home and use inside the car. 2) if it is a refillable Gas / propane, I can buy one and i can use it only when needed 3) is it safe to use these type of stuffs? more

Resolved Question: Is it safe to use a space heater in a toddler's room?

With the high cost of propane this year, I'd like to keep the thermostat as low as possible and heat only the rooms(s) we're in with portable space heaters. I have owned a DeLonghi oil filled heater before and thought it was safe to use at night, my husband is freaking out at the mere suggestion of using a space heater in our toddler's room, claiming it's a "fire waiting to happen". Assuming I bought a brand new one and used it according to directions, would I be able to sleep at night knowing my toddler is warm and safe? more

Resolved Question: Propane heat or zoned electric, which is most affordable?

Our furnace and hot water heater run on propane. Due to the astronomical cost of propane in our area (upstate NY), would it be more economical to keep the thermostat VERY low and instead use electric baseboard or ceramic / space heaters in the rooms we are in? Just in general, I know its hard to calculate exactly without knowing cost per kwh etc. No need to be scientific just wondering if the spike in the electric bill using electric portable heat would offset the propane saved? Thanks more

Resolved Question: My heater burned out in my room after I left it on all night. What should I do? I'm really scared.?

My heater just burned out in my room because I left it on, all night. It leaked liquid (propane? kerosene?) onto my carpet and emitted a foul-smelling smoke that set off the smoke alarm. Now, my room and hallway smells strongly of burning plastic. 1. What should I do with the heater? 2. What is the smell and is it harmful if i breathe it in? 3. How long until the smell disappears? Is there a safe way of making it go away faster? 4. What should I do with the leaked liquid spill on my carpet? Please help me. I'm really scared right now. Thank you in advance. EDIT: The heater was a electric, portable heater, but there was also liquid fuel inside as is evidenced by the leak. Thanks to everybody who has helped. The smell is still not going away, though. more

Resolved Question: Which kind of auxiliary heat is the best?

Resolved Question: Hi, :) i have horrible propane bills and would like to put 20g in the 300 gal tank with a small 20gal portabl?

I have a mobile home with a central heater that i don't want to use,, and a gas stove and water heater hooked to a 300 gal tank that is almost empty. It costs about 500.00 to fill it with 100gal. due to transport costs and of course the higher prices of propane here. I was hoping to just top it off with a 10 or 20 gal. tank so i don't have to spend all that money. I can get a 20 gal. portable tank filled at the gas station for a lot cheaper and i don't need to use our central heater and of course turn down the water heater. And i'll be using electric heat. I noticed that on the 300gal. tank there's a resealable fill port. What do i need to, if it's possilbe, fitting wise, to put just 20 gal in it? Thanks for any answers if i havn't provided enough info lemme know so i can add it here again Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: How can I find another propane company who still delivers to RVs? Need help soon!?

I have the money to buy more propane now, but I do *not* have the money to buy a whole conversion kit to make it so I can attach a portable tank to my RV. It is my only place of living and it is still very cold here, plus I can't cook or have hot water without it (and electric heaters don't cut it; not even close!) I'm a bit panicked here. I have 1/4 tank left which will not last long and I have called every single company in the phone book. Nobody delivers to RVs now because the tanks attached to them are too small for them to make profit with the damned gas prices! These can't be my only options. Where else can I look? Conversion kits cost upwards of $150, which I will not have before this runs out, plus I will have to pay someone to install it for me and then the actual tank is $40, if I want the smallest one which will have me driving to refill it once or twice a week. I work two jobs, and have applied for cash assistance, but I can't get a big enough loan for it either. Help! more

Resolved Question: How To Get Heat From Gas Furnace When Electricity Goes Out?

I have a gas furnace which also needs electricity to run the fan. I live in a very cold area and am concerned about how to get heat if/when the electricity goes out during a winter storm. I'm assuming the gas will still be on in this situation, but it won't do any good because the furnace won't run w/o electricity. I'm thinking maybe I could get a small emergency generator to run the furnace fan, or is that crazy and/or dangerous? Alternatively, maybe install a ventless gas fireplace, but do those need electricity too? I currently have a small portable propane heater for emergencies but that thing will only heat a very small room and i don't want to live in a closet if my electricity goes out for a week. I guess i'm just looking for the easiest and cheapest way to provide emergency heat to my home when it's below zero outside and I have no electricity for a week. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: What type, and, or, kind or brand of electric portable heater is most efficient and least expensive to run?

I believe if I purchase and use supplemental electric space heaters, the costs to run these would be way less than what I am paying to heat my house with propane right now. It takes 5 gallons of propane to heat my 1500 square foot house per day. At $3 per gallon, that is $450 per month. I heated with the electric oil-filled heaters for one month and it was only a total of $150 for my electric for that month. So, even if it costs twice that, I would still be ahead by using electric to heat my house. Right? But what kind of electric heaters should I purchase? Radiant? Infrared? Convection? What brand, etc.? I am planning to use the money I have saved for propane, to purchase heaters, instead. (Seems to make more sense to me to do it this way). The electric company will not suggest a type to use. They just tell you it's a "matter of preference." Like, duh........... more

Resolved Question: What is the best way to heat my finished basement?

We have a fully underground basement. Walls are poured concrete. Ceilings 8'. Approx 1500 sq feet. 1500 sq feet finished. Elec furnace. Three heat vents open in basement. In the summer it is fab to go down there to escape the heat but in the winter it is chilly enough that the kids won't ever go down. I'd guess the temp with just the heat vents open to be maybe 55-60F. What is a safe and quick way to heat the area? I only want to heat it on occassion to about 70F. I have 2 small electric, portable space heaters but they take forever & don't get the space much warmer. I'm wondering if something like Eden Pure or possibly a ventless fireplace would do the trick. On days like today, when we are totally snowed in, it is so much better for the sanity of the entire family if they are down there playing away! :) Should also add that I am scared to death to handle anything that uses any fuel (propane) so that it is probably not a good option for me. Thanks Much! more

Resolved Question: garage heater options and advice?

I have a 24x24x8 garage, walls insulated-no sheetrock. Ceiling insulated, insulated doors. My hope is to be able to heat my garage so it is warm enough to do hobby work, and play with my children. In Massachusetts, so the temp can get pretty low. I might need to raise the temperature by 30 or 40 deg. I want the cost to be reasonable, for example, less than $300 preferably, unless there is a good reason or advantage where I can justify it. I do not have natural gas and do not want a 100lb LP tank outside. It needs to be reasonably sized, for example maybe 2'x2' max. Ideally it would be portable so in the summer I can store it somewhere else. So far in my research I am leaning towards a Kerosene heater, due to the size, price, btu's, portability, etc. I am not sure if there are any safety or legal concerns. Propane might work, but I believe I have to run a line to the outside even with a 20lb tank legally and safely. Thanks so much.I have oil heat, hydro air in the house.
