Resolved Question: Quartz Infrared Heater?

What would be the difference between this $400 heater and a portable electric oil filled heater? Looking to warm up my family room, kitchen, dining all are open to each. P.S. I have a 85% gas furnace. The rooms I'm wanting to raise the temp in are about 40% of the total living area. Almost making sense to shut off vents in rooms I'm not using and turn up the thermostat. Thoughts anyone? more

I have been deluged by Eden Pure and several other companies, plus I see in Parade and US Weekly Sunday inserts the ads for the quartz infrared heating units. They are portable, "run on less than a Mr. Coffee" a day, etc. Right now the adds seem to be for the same product, just packaged differently. They all rely on convection, infrared bulbs, and some copper concoction that retains heat. They seem to come in two sizes, one will heat 300 sq' and the other 1000 sq'. Anybody out there using one and if so, are they worth the cost, which is 300-400 dollars? Are they efficient and work as well as the maker claims? Opinions would be appreciated. more

Resolved Question: What will make a Major reduction in my heating costs this winter?

I have taken the first steps to conserve heat and cut down on electricity: switched to all florescent bulbs,foam insulate all cracks, caulk and seal around all doors and windows, open drapes on full sun windows during the day and close at night, eliminate air leaks, insulate and seal duct work, turn off vents in unused rooms, programmable thermostat, thermostat at 65 and always wear warm clothes, don't use exhaust fans, etc. I've been reading about Eco Heaters, quartz infrared portable heaters and corn and pellet stoves. Until the price of installing solar panels comes down, are there proven alternatives that would be affordable and effective to save on energy costs this winter? Also, I forgot to ask about fireplace inserts with side blowers. I've read fireplaces actually draw heat from the house and out the chimney.Anyone have one or suggest an alternative? more

I ordered the EdenPURE Quartz Infrared Portable Heater...the $400 model. It is defective with no sound and no heat produced. The lights on the front work. Their customer service number is never answered. They have a recording that they are "experiencing a high volume of calls," suggest calling later, and then I am disconnected. I tried calling the number for ordering and talked to a very nice lady who didn't have a clue about anything but selling them. Has anyone else had a problem with returning a defective EdenPURE? Another upsetting problem: at the website where the order form is, there is a written guarantee...sounds great, 100% guarantee. Period. No strings. After we had to cut the box to remove the heater (it was too heavy to lift out with all of the tight packing), we read the manual. At the back of the manual it states that to return, you MUST use the original packaging to avoid damage during shipping. Is this their clever way to avoid returning my money?To be fair to this company, I want to report...I contacted them by e-mail. It took several days, but I received a message that they would send me a paid return label and have UPS pick up. I had already had UPS pack and send for $64. When I wrote about my expense, I recieved an e-mail to copy my paper work and they would refund the price I paid. So I can give a good report on this company. Thank you for answering my question. I'm glad to have the information on the internet site for BBB. I will save that URL if I ever need it for another company/transaction. more
