Solar Radio Questions asked

Resolved Question: Why is it that we can do all this, but not find a new fuel source?

Why is it that we can put men on the moon, access the internet from almost everywhere on Earth, make a call to anyone and anywhere with a cellphone, have touchscreen computers and phones, can travel the speed of sound, have a space station, bomb the moon, access the radio via satellite, drive stealth jets with a remote control, hop on a plane and travel to almost anywhere on the planet, watch movies in 3D, build bridges across oceans, build skyscrapers, mass produce just about every item you can think of, and more..., but we can't create an alternative fuel that replaces gasoline, coal, and dams in producing electricity and powering cars, and one that does not pollute the environment. I'm not referring to what we already have, wind turbines, solar panels, electric cars, etc., but a mainstream eco-friendly fuel source that would replace gasoline, coal, and others as a power source. Why?? more

Resolved Question: Future Caution is advised?

As our technology advances in radio and television, our signals are getting more and more powerful year in year out. Digital advances to the stage where we communicate with robots on Mars. We are sending signals in all directions of our Solar system.. and in time our future stronger signals will be heard powerfully beyond interstellar space and into our galaxy. This is dangerous ! We have been listening intensively into space for the last 30 years, and have not heard a peep. Why ? .. There are numbers of intelligent and advanced life out there, and they are keeping quiet ! There must be a damn good reason for this. Maybe we should follow their example in keeping quiet. They obviously know something we don't. We should be designing stealth signals before its to late. I prefer to be the hunter, and not the hunted. and/or.. safe than sorry. Luckily for us, the signals we are currently sending are too weak and will degrade beyond recognition. Its only a matter of time till we broadcast radio, television, and everything about us to every good and nasty alien species out there. This can not be an intelligent thing to do. Your thoughts . more

Resolved Question: Where are last week's radio waves in the universe now?

Resolved Question: What's the chance that there are aliens with godlike powers?

I'm kind of agnostic because of the possibility of this. But someone actually did calculate these things. The Drake equation: Calculates how many planets in our galaxy that could possibly support life and survive long enough to become intelligent. I haven't looked up the Drake equation in a while and I don't study math and astronomy so maybe someone can just give me a raw number. The Kardashev Scale: Measures how life and civilization advances. Type I civilization is when a civilization has control over a whole planet (Humans are always there), type II is control over a solar system. While Type III and beyond is control of a galaxy and beyond, maybe even time and life itself. With the Drake equation and the age of the universe the chances are that there are, or should be several Type II and above. The Fermi paradox: Though there should be a lot of intelligent life in the universe, how come no radio signals have reached us? Taking the age of the universe into consideration and the possibility that life (on other planets) could have became intelligent thousands or millions of years before Earth. Their radio signals, or something similar they experimented with, would have reached us. It's improbable that it wouldn't. So is someone hiding from us? But what about the signals from when they were advancing, from when they were just a sub Type I civilization like us? Did they go back in time and hide that evidence too?Typo: "...Type I civilization... (humans are ALMOST there)..." not "always". more

Resolved Question: Which is better for the environment...?

...installing a solar hot water system or not having a baby? On the radio someone was saying, "if you don't shave in the shower you could save around 100 liters of water". It got me thinking. Imagine how much water you could save if you don't reproduce? And that's just water. What about jet fuel, and plastics, and paper, and trees, chemicals animals that will have to be slaughtered and land that will have to be cleared etc etc. There's 7 billion of us now and each day our numbers grow by almost a quarter of a million greenhouse-gas-producing humans. Maybe conservation is not really the answer maybe it's more about family planning, awareness and helping the hundred of millions around the world who would like to have sex but don't necessarily want to conceive. more

Resolved Question: Two lead/acid batteries in series don't discharge evenly?

In my crude little drawing below, the dotted lines represent wires, the < and > indicate they are connected to a device. I have two regular lead/acid batteries (ride-on lawnmower batteries to be precise) that I have wired in series (as shown below.) The power adapter that came with the device outputs 24 VDC -- which, coincidently, is the voltage supplied by two 12 volt batteries in series. :-) All good so far. What confuses me is that, in practice, one of the batteries is drained down to nothing (it reads just over 1 volt, so low the charger won't even try to charge it) while the other one is left almost fully charged (12 VDC, +/-0.2). This happens in just a couple of hours, even though the device only consumes 3 watts. I was expecting them to last a few days at least, and I also expected a more-or-less equal amount of power to be drawn from each. Another surprise was that the device (a long-range WiFi network radio) still works after the voltage has dropped substantially; it shuts off at about 11 VDC. Is it because passive Power over Ethernet is being used? I saw some mention of power being "returned" on two of the four wires passive PoE uses, but it didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time Both batteries are brand new, so the condition of their respective plates and electrolyte should be about the same. I'm thinking I'll test to see how long just one battery lasts, but first I want to check with the mfr to make sure that low of voltage won't destroy the device. Any clues? (btw, we have ordered a solar power system for this equipment; the batteries I 've described are just an interim measure for the next couple of weeks. <...[+]    [-]......[+]    [-]......>     |------------|    |------------|     |            |    |            |     |_______|    |_______|The batteries are exactly the same size, same mfr, same model #, same rating. They've only been through a couple charge/discharge cycles, and both still hold a charge, so I doubt either has been ruined yet. I get that 12.2 VDC is not fully charged, thus inclusion of the key word 'almost'. I didn't know that a stronger battery in a series would reverse-charge a weaker one, must do some research. It occurs to me that the rating for these batteries does not mention amp-hours, only cold cranking amps. So maybe wrong power curve for the application? I think I'll exchange them for a deep cycle battery.Deep-cycle was the key, it's been up for almost 2 days now with only about 1/4 volt drop. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this prologue to my story?

I know it's a lot, but please read it and give me your honest opinion. 0300 hours, November 14, 3078 Master Sergeant Jason Morven of the Alliance Defense Command (ADC) sat in a wall-mounted chair in a room cramped with a dozen other men and women. They were aboard a Phoenix drop ship, descending toward the surface of the planet Chellara II. Jason closed his eyes in deep thought. At times like this, he would think back to how the war began. In the year 2720, Humans unlocked the secret to traveling between planets. Not just in Earth’s solar system, but across the entire galaxy. After the breakthrough in science, it took Humans less than a decade to colonize over a dozen planets spread across the galaxy. In the year 2949, Humans discovered that they were not alone in the universe by making first contact with an alien species, the Trunin. They were a peaceful species, who, like Humans, also thought they were the only inhabitants of the universe. After spending years learning each other’s languages, and after the invention of the universal translator which allowed for seamless communication between the two species, Humans and Trunin formed an intergalactic alliance, and have been good friends ever since. In the year 3039, a third alien species revealed itself to the Alliance. They, however, were not a peaceful species at all. Before the Alliance could even attempt to make contact with them, the new species attacked one of their inhabited planets, killing hundred’s of thousands. The Alliance attempted to make contact with the third species. But after they attacked another planet, all attempts to communicate were abandoned, and all efforts were then focused on fighting them off. It was the beginning of a long and brutal war. The third species had first appeared out of a black hole-like portal. It is for that reason that the Alliance had dubbed them the Rift. Jason was distracted from his thoughts by a blast of incredibly loud music. His eyes reflexively shot open and he saw Private Shawn Vest reaching above his head to a radio. “Turn that crap off before I use ya’ for target practice!” First Lieutenant William Trimmers yelled for everyone aboard to hear. His voice was cracked from years of almost constant shouting, but he was still very intimidating to Jason. “Gladly, sir!” Shawn said with a mouth full of chewing gum. His voice was thick with sarcasm. He saluted the Lieutenant, but there was no respect in the salute at all. Then he finally reached up and switched off the radio. He seemed to be moving with deliberate slowness, as if to see how slowly he could turn off the radio without the Lieutenant yelling again. Even after the obnoxious noise was gone, Jason’s ears were ringing from the intense volume of Shawn’s radio. The moment Lieutenant Trimmers turned his back to Shawn, the woman sitting next to him, Private First Class Ashley Fresco, jabbed her right elbow into Shawn’s left arm. She and everyone else, including Jason, were wearing full body armor and helmets that obscured their faces with tinted glass. But Jason could sense her expression was that of anger and annoyance. “Ouch!” Shawn exclaimed as he rubbed his left arm with his right. He shrugged at Ashley as if to ask, “What did I do?” Jason grinned with satisfaction. He had known Ashley his whole life. In that time, he had learned that it was never a good idea to get her angry. She had once given a man twice her size a black eye for refusing to move out of the way of the restroom door. Jason, Shawn, Ashley, and everyone except Lieutenant Trimmers had VR51W Assault Rifles strapped over their shoulders. The Rifles were gas operated, bullpup design, and used 6.8 mm rounds. Jason and Ashley both carried their own EV9G automatic pistols as their sidearm and everyone else had 9mm handguns as their sidearm. Every one of them also had combat knives, but Jason’s was unique. Lieutenant Trimmers carried a B9610 pump-action shotgun and a Desert Eagle as a sidearm. Jason was no stranger to high caliber handguns such as the Desert Eagle. On Earth, his Uncle had a one-thousand-year-old gold-plated Desert Eagle in a display case on the mantle in his library. “We’re approaching the drop zone, Lieutenant,” a man said over the Phoenix’s communication channel. “Nice n’ easy up there,” Lieutenant Trimmers said. He faced his fellow soldiers and shouted, “Listen up, Marines!” Immediately, every single person aboard the Phoenix, including Shawn, sat up straight in their chairs and faced their Commanding Officer, all of them paying very close attention to his every word. “I know none of you have ever been inside enemy territory before!” Lieutenant Trimmers began. “Well I’ve got good news; this is your lucky day! You will be joining your fellow ADC soldiers on Chellara II! If we succeed in retaking the planet, it will be a major victory in this war! Now get down there and show the Rift what we can do!” “Sir, yes, sir!” everyone shouted in unison. Jason more

Resolved Question: If anyone would like to know what scene plays what song in New Moon, read up, because I remember them all?

Meet Me on the Equinox- Not shown in the movie, but plays in the credits. Friends- I believe plays when Bella and Jess are leaving the movie theaters and Bella wants to go over to the motorcycle guys. Hearing Damage- Is the scene where the wolves are chasing Victoria, Harry has the heart attack because of Victoria, and Bella is making her way to the cliff. Possibility- Is the part where Bella is sitting in her room after Edward leaves and the months pass/also in the background of Bella's letters to Alice. White Demon love song plays during the ending credits. Satellite Heart- plays on the radio when Bella and Edward are returning to her house after the birthday incident at the Cullen's. I belong to You- is playing after when Charlie talks to Bella about her being so lifeless, she is in the truck, and then when Bella and Jessica are leaving the theater. Roslyn- is the soundtrack to the break-up scene. Done all Wrong- is the song that plays when Bella, Embry, and Jared are pulling up to Emily's house. Monsters- plays in the very beginning when Bella is on her way to school, when she is talking with Edward, and I think even when she talks with Jacob. The Violet Hour-plays during the birthday scene.(That one is my second favorite) Shooting the Moon- Is the happy Bella/Jacob montage of them in his garage and Bella is starting to be lively again.(My favorite) Slow Life-plays when Bella is drowning. No Sound but the Wind- is the song that ends the movie basically; when Edward and Bella are in the car again and they almost hit Jacob when they see him in the road. New Moon-I think plays when Bella wakes up in her bedroom, and Edward is there and they talk about everything. All I Belive In- plays in the garage, the one where Bella turns it off and says she doesn't like music anymore. Solar Midnight-Is when Bella, Jake, and Mike are at the theaters together.---I am so sure this where all these song are played. Thanks for Reading!! more

Resolved Question: Humor me please. I did this when I was a kid but can't remember how?

Back in the 1950's, I built a radio set, (crystal?) in which I wrapped copper? wire around a cardboard toilet paper roll but I can't remember much else about it. I'd like to pass the experience along to my grand-kid and, as I remember, most of the stuff was home-made. Everything now is off-the-shelf. I'd like to take the grand kid through the experience but I can't remember how to do it using the home-made parts. He's pretty interested in scientific stuff (7 yrs old) and we've worked together on some other stuff (the solar system; space shuttle, etc.) If anyone remembers... I'd really appreciate the help. If I'm in the wrong category, please point me the right way. I figure the "Physics" people will not laugh and help out a little given my intent. Thanks to all. more

Resolved Question: Any ideas, suggestion ? Information given below?

Okay, so My teacher made us do a project And it was compulsory ( if not, I wouldnt have bothered to make one xD ) The project require us to do a model to help reduce global warming Like, you know, environment friendly stuff Like maybe using a solar panel to use solar energy to make a radio work And because that idea of using solar energy to run a radio was taken, My team cant think of anything, any model to do And I was wondering if any of you have any ideas on it ? The project was given on October this year And I still cant think of anything to do xD Gosh, my creativity is incredibly low xD The deadline is somewhere in February next year Just to tell =) Thanks in advance =)Oh, and I forgot to add xD They require to us to make a working model. A model that works, you know. And like, the parts for making that working model cannot be too expensive because they say something like, the government might use one of our ideas to make it real. Resolved Question: If science is always coming up with newer theories?

If science is always coming up with new theories and different scientists cannot even agree on the same subject how does one then determine what to believe? for e.g. global warming, it has been said that global warming will cause the ice caps to melt and sea levels to rise and our earth will get hotter and is MAN MADE. Others say that it is a natural cycle of the earth and is NOT man made but is a result of solar flares increasing, others even say we will be heading into an ice age etc etc....... Mobile phone or cell phone usage has been said to cause brain cancer due to the radio waves, yet others argue that it is safe to use and there is no scientific explanation that it causes brain cancer. The affects of Coffee is another argument that I have read about.. Skin cancer promotions - stay away from the sun some people say, but they fail to mention that the human body needs vitamin d for obvious health reasons, so we need a little exposure to the sun each day. etc etc..... Different scientists and people say different things, how do you determine what to believe in. They might come up with a theory about a certain thing NOW but in the future that theory completely changes. So how can you be absolutley sure who to trust? Atheists please what is your power of deduction? How do you decide on what scientific deduction is the right one? This might be an interesting discussion, hopefully I can get some intelligent answers? more

Resolved Question: astronmy help thanks?

Each Voyager spacecraft carries a "postcard" designed to be understandable to any aliens that might someday encounter it. On the "postcard," scientists pinpointed the location of Earth by triangulating it between pulsars. Why did the scientists choose pulsars rather than some other type of star? A.)Pulsars are very bright and therefore easy to find. B.) Several pulsars are located within a dozen light-years of our solar system, making them useful for finding our solar system. C.) We're pretty sure that aliens will have only radio telescopes and not optical telescopes, so they'll have a better chance of seeing pulsars than ordinary stars. D.) Pulsars are easy to identify by their almost perfectly steady periods of pulsation. more

Resolved Question: Do ACDC adapters come with tips of 5mm outer diameter?

I am trying to get an adapter for this crappy solar radio and it takes a 4.5v adapter. I bought one used somewhere and it was to large of a diameter. So then i started this crazy crusade of trying to find one that will work online. A lot of the ones on Ebay say 5.5mm outer diameter. Resolved Question: Solar powering an Radio Contoled car for recharge power only?

So I have a couple solar cells off some outdoor yard lights that I replaced with new up to date lights so these were for parts. I know solar panels produce power during light but during no light conditions have the ability to suck power back out of the battery being charged, so a diode must be used.....? What would someone recommend as a high efficiency diode to be used(i think germanium??) or rating or part number. Then do I have this right, my 2 solar panels(2inch X 2inch) can go either in parallel or series as this is only charging and not a direct supply source, will one be better config. than the other? (Parallel or series??). I should be able to solder on the PC board where the NiCad batt wires go.....I'm thinking this is ok because the PC board has a On Off switch and will only allow solar power to flow into battery only, no other components thus having WHILE POWER SWITCH IS IN OFF POSITION AND SUNNY should charge batter.?? Do I have this right or am I missing components. Positve solar wire to positive batt wire negative to negative, more

Resolved Question: Which do you think would be the most true :D?

Which do you think would be the most true :D Top Ten ways things would be different if Microsoft built cars: 1. A Particular model year of car wouldn't be available until AFTER that year, instead of before. 2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you'd have to buy a new car. 3. Occassionally your car would just die for no reason and you'd have to restart it. For some strange reason, you would just accept this. 4. You could only have one person at a time in your car, unless you bought a car '95 or a car NT, but then you would have to buy more seats. 5. You would be constantly pressured to upgrade your car. 6. Sun Microsystems would make a car that was solar powered, twice as reliable, 5 times as fast, but only ran on 5% of the roads. 7. The oil, alternator, gas, and engine warning lights would be replaced with a single "General Car Fault" warning light. 8. People would get excited about thew new features in Microsoft cars, forgetting completely that they had been available in other brands for years. 9. We'd all have to switch to Microsoft Gas (tm). 10. Ford, General Motors, and Chrylser would all be complaining because Microsoft was putting radios in all its models. more

Resolved Question: Do you think we are alone of one of many forms of life in the Universe?

I strongly believe were not alone. In 1977 the SETI program received a strong narrowband radio signal which they called the 'Wow signal' it would of been technically 200 years old thus it was received from the year 1777. The signal bore expected hallmarks of potential non-terrestrial and non-solar system origin (ET). I believe it was received from a fast traveling extraterrestrial who was possibly traveling through a worm holes remember in 1777 we never had radio so I highly doubt it was due to our radio signals which already they have debunked. Sadly they have never found that signal again. I doubt we are alone. Remember light is the fastest speed but the universe but its soo big that the nearest Earth like planet (Gliese 581d) it will take 20 years for a message to reach them threfore another 20 years to get a reply and thats if they receive an undestan our messages. They have sent off 5,000 text messages to Gliese 581d we have to wait another 40 years for a possible reply. The universe is soo big that the sun we see is really 8 mins old (we see the sun where it was 8 mins ago) and some stars in the sky we look at are really where they were thousands of years ago. more

Chavez / Venezuela to export gasoline to Iran Sep 7, 7:04 AM (ET) By ALI AKBAR DAREINI TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez sealed an agreement to export 20,000 barrels per day of gasoline to Iran, state TV reported Monday. The deal would give Tehran a cushion if the West carries out threats of fuel sanctions over Iran's nuclear program. The two countries signed the agreement late Sunday during a visit by Chavez, who pledged to deepen ties with Iran and stand together against what he called the imperialist powers of the world. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090907… also > "At his first formal press conference since his June 12 re- election, Ahmadinejad said yesterday he didn’t recognize deadlines for talks on Iran’s nuclear plans. “Iran’s nuclear issue is over,” he said. “We will never negotiate Iran’s undeniable rights.” http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aa7mTee2kpoU Now connect the dots...notice the dates... Congress looks to bolster Iran sanctions The Associated Press Tuesday, April 28, 2009 | 1:30 p.m. Congress is taking up a bipartisan proposal which would give the Obama administration more leverage over Iran by toughening economic sanctions on foreign oil and shipping firms that aid Tehran. A group of Democrats and Republicans introduced legislation Tuesday that would give the president expanded authority to crack down on companies that export gasoline and other refined petroleum products to Iran. The Senate bill, which is expected to be mirrored by a similar House bill, is expected to pass because it has broad support from both Republicans and Democrats and is not opposed by the White House. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/apr/28/congress-looks-to-bolster-iran-sanctions/ ********************************************************** So my question is...Why are we allowing our government to set us up for failure?
