I'm in 8th grade and this is a 5-paragraph essay on To Kill A Mocking Bird, i'm describing Scout. Scout Finch is a girl with many words to describe her. Scout is always getting in fights, for example, Scout narrates, “I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away…it was the first time I had ever backed down from a fight” (88). Scout is also always believing a lot of what is told to her. For example, Scout says, “Is that why Mr. Arthur stays in the house, to keep away from women?” (50). Scout also acts more like a boy then a lady should of her age. Scout Finch is a truculent, gullible, and tom-boyish girl. Scout Finch is a truculent girl, not afraid to pick a fight and not afraid to fight. First of all, Scout hunts down and fights Walter Cunningham because of her belief that he got her in trouble. For example, The narrator says, “Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop” (25). Scout not only fights often, but often wins. For example, Jem says, “Scout here, she’s crazy-she won’t fight you any more” (26). Jem has to reassure Walter that Scout won’t fight him again. Secondly, Scout fights her cousin, Francis, on Christmas day for making fun of Atticus. For example, Scout narrates, “Francis looked at me carefully, , concluded I was sufficiently subdued, and crooned softly, ‘Nigger-lover…’ This time, I split my knuckle to the bone the bone on his front teeth” (96). Scout is easily provoked into a fight with insults against her father. Scout also narrates, “Francis and I pointed at each other. ‘Grandma,’ he bawled, ‘she called me a whore-lady and jumped on me!’ ‘Is that true scout?’ said Uncle Jack. ‘I reckon so’” (96). Scout will admit her fights and proudly for defending her father. Most importantly, many believe, including Atticus, that they cannot trust Scout without her getting into a fight. For example, Atticus says, “I’m not worried about Jem keeping his head, but Scout’d just as soon jump on someone as look at him if her pride’s at stake…” (100). Atticus is worried that scout will fight anyone that gives her insults about her father in the court case of Tom Robinson. For example, Atticus says, “You might here some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down” (87). Atticus reassures scout to not fight at school, no matter what she hears. Scout Finch is prideful and needs to learn to control her actions. Scout Finch is also gullible, believing all the neighborhood gossip and every word Jem says to be true. First of all, Scout believes Jem whenever he tells her something that seems to be out of her zone of knowledge. For example, Scout narrates, “I contented myself with asking Jem if he’d lost his mind. ‘I’m just trying to tell you the new way they’re teaching the first grade, stubborn. It’s the Dewy Decimal System.’ Having never questioned Jem’s pronouncements, I saw no reason to begin now” (20). Scout accepts Jem’s name for the new teaching system, which is actually the name for library cataloging. Scout also narrates, “‘Maybe he died and they stuffed him up the chimney.’ ‘Where did you get such a notion?’ ‘That’s what Jem said he thought they did’” (48). Scout is also willing to spread Jem’s ideas. Secondly, Scout believes most if not all the neighborhood gossip, mostly from Stephanie Crawford. For example, Scout narrates, “So Jem received most of his information from Miss Stephanie Crawford, a neighborhood scold, who said she knew the whole thing” (11). Jem receives all that he knows about the neighborhood’s past and current affairs from the great gossip queen of the town. Scout also narrates, “Miss Stephanie Crawford said some of the town council told Mr. Radley that if he didn’t take Boo back, Boo would die of mold from the damp” (12). All the stories and history behind the Radley story is all from one woman who wasn’t even there. Most importantly, Scout believes almost everything she is told about Boo Radley. For example, Scout tells, “Jem gave a reasonable description of Boo: Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were blood-stained-if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time” (14). Scout believes a completely unreal description of a person against her own common sense. Scout also narrates, “According to Miss Stephanie, Boo was sitting in the living room cutting some items from The Maycomb Tribune to paste in his scrapbook. His father entered the room. As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent’s leg, pulled them out, wiped them off on his pants, and resumed his cutting” (12). Scout more

heyy im doing a Harry Potter Scrapbook for English class and one of the things i need is a page with at least 7 "momentos or souveniers" he could've collected along the way. They have to be real items i could tape in and small enough to fit under the plastic cover of the scrapbook. Hello, I'm 36 weeks pregnant and have a deep desire to nest! I've made a list of to do's which I've already begun to work on. Here is my list. CAN YOU GIVE ME ANY MORE NEW IDEAS TO ADD TO IT?!?!?! Go through necesities of room (surely to god i don't need all this stuff in here...she'll probably break half of it if it stays! lol) 15. Resolved Question: A question for stay at home Mom's... How do you make a little extra money to afford to stay home?

I just had a baby and I can't even imagine going back to work and leaving him with a daycare provider. I am one of those Mom's who doesn't think anyone else can take care of my baby the way he should be. I have about 5 weeks until I have to be back to work and I am dreading that day. So, I am trying to brainstorm some ways that I can stay home with him. ANY IDEAS? I would need to make about $200 a week or more if possible. One thing I thought of was taking on another child to babysit. I was thinking maybe like a 2 or 3 year old would be good, but I don't know how to find someone in my area that is looking for a babysitter. I have had several people suggest making a sign, but I don't know what I would write on that sign. I also sell PartyLite on the side, and could probably boost that business a little if I promoted it some more. As well as my online business at Jeneane.etsy.com where I sell homemade craft items like scrapbooks, cards, and more. Right now my shop is not doing so well because I was on bed rest and having pregnancy issues. Any suggestions for my shop, or finding a child to watch, or anything other suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated! more

Voting Question: Ideas for a new artistic medium?

I am suffering from artist's block, and have been for close to a year now. My current mediums bore and frustrate me and end up driving me further into a fit of "tortured artist" syndrome. I have been given the suggestion a few times to try a new medium. Any ideas for new mediums would be appreciated. Can Xyron Adhesive Dot Transfer Sheets be used to cut cloth on Cricut Machines? This is the information about the transfer sheets. Uniform edge-to-edge adhesive for die and laser cuts. The adhesive is dot patterned and breaks appropriately so there are no glue strings hanging in cutout areas. The top mask with the glue from the cutout areas still intact can be set aside for later use. Dot pattern adhesive has a longer shelf life and does not yellow over time when applied to items. Acid free. 4 Sheets, 3.5" x 4" These samll sheets of adhesive are wonderful for adhering die cust, aplhabets, or other small items with odd shapes. They create instant stickers. Peel back the top layer of film and lay your die cut face up on the bottom layer. Pres the Top layer back down to spread adhesive on back of Die cut. Peel top layer and pick up die cut. Your die cut will have dots on backside and be permanetly adhered to your Project. more

First time scrapbooker. I am working on a budget, but have already exceeded it a lot. I have everything to work with that I can possibly think of. My problem is coming up with a Title for a page. Then, adding an appropriate picture to go with it. Also, I lost my best friend who was also my dear Brother just last week. He was 43. I want to make a Very Special, memory book of just the two of us, and of course, I will add pictures of his wife, and our parents and my son. Any ideas? Resolved Question: RIDDLE! What was the reason for his suicide?

Shadow flipped the tent flap open and surveyed the scene. In the center of the tent, lay a man with self inflicted gun wounds to the head. In the corner was a small cot. A packets of cigarettes and a bottle of whiskey stood on a bedside table along a kerosene lamp. Shadow then combed the tent for additional clues to a possible motive. Resolved Question: Baby Shower etiquette, what would you do?

Four years ago I helped throw a baby shower for my closest friend. I bought invitations, sent invitations (over 50 in total and paid postage), bought all plates/cups/plastic flatware, and paid for baby shower favors. In addition, I was asked to make a portion of the food (the father's family was making the rest) and my mother stepped up to the plate with a huge batch of homemade potato salad. Afterwards, the father asked me to make a baby shower scrapbook and I did even though I felt that was not necessarily my 'BFF' responsibility. Now, four years later, I am pregnant with my first child and still close friends with this woman. She has not done a single thing for my baby shower! My mother has had to completely take over invitations, food, planning, etc. and though she has repeatedly said she would help with games or favors it's only when I prompt her. She has made no attempt on her own to contact my family and help with my shower or even bring up the subject when she talks to me. I have felt 'used' at many points throughout our friendship but this has hit me the hardest. I know she is not rolling in money, but neither was I when I helped at her shower. It just seems so selfish of her, and now my eyes are open to all of her behavior. I don't think she takes advantage of me on purpose, but that still doesn't make it right. Anyway, what would you do? She is attending my baby shower. My husband thinks I should 'judge' her true colors on what she gives at the shower. If she comes with nothing, or just a small item then he thinks I should drop her and maybe even confront her before I do to tell her why. It's very possible that she doesn't even know why I would be upset with her, maybe in her mind she doesn't have to help with the baby shower (even though I bent over backwards for hers)? more

i had to write a sequel to this lullby for english. im no where near done, but i just wanted to see what people thought of it . be honest =] MAY I did it. Stanford. It’s finally over. Who knew how fast these four years have passed. I can so easily recall the day I left for college and how everyone reacted to it. It was like a nightmare, with tidal pools of emotions flying right at me. Ugh, why do people act like they are never going to see someone again when they go off to school. I mean it’s not like I wasn’t going to call. I’d like to see them try and stop me. I hated packing. It was one of those things I could never be sure about. Did I bring my flip-flops for spring? Did I remember my scrapbook from the summer? I hated not being sure. I’ve always been organized, whether it was my room, or planning one of my mother’s many marriages and even making sure my boyfriend Dexter’s socks were put away. If my mother were to take even a sock out of my room, I would know it. It helps that every time she comes in my room, she makes a habit of picking up my hairbrush or books, and when she’s examines it to her liking, she puts it back somewhere around the room. I never confronted her about this; I knew later when I would find her she’d be back to writing one of her books. That was the one thing I have always been sure about in my life. When that curtain was down, watch out. My mother would sit in the sunroom and type, just type. The familiar sounds of my childhood, the click and clack of those keystrokes. It was as if that was my own lullaby written by her. But it wasn’t the one I listened to every few nights. Not the one that soothed my pains and sobs at night. *** There was a knock on the door. Damn I, I had just started packing my clothes and was folding that by item and color. I hated being interrupted. It was the day before graduation. My family and friends would soon be joining me; however it was still early for them to arrive now. I had a guess at who would be at the door though. And I was right. As soon as I opened the door, I was ambushed. Suddenly all I could see was think black curls, and I was being embraced so hard I could hardly breathe. The familiar hair, the anticipated hug, and that smell of dog, he was finally here. “Dexter!” I gasped, “I can’t breathe!” I struggled to get free and yet part of me wanted to stay. I haven’t seen Dexter in a month, a long one at that. Every night he would call and tell me about how Monkey, his dog was and what new adventures him and his band mates got into. It was my favorite time of the day, only because I could finally talk to him . I never expected to feel something like this. A couple of years ago, I would wince at the sound of love. I saw how my mother would fall in love and out and get hurt on several occasions. I didn’t want that for me. Love just wasn’t worth the pain. It was amazing how I could feel like this and my mother the total opposite. She hoped that with every marriage, she would get that love that her characters in her books would always get, the I-can’t-stand-to-be-away-from-you kind. I just never thought my rules and standards for guys would be thrown away. Especially for this kid right here. “Oh, sorry Rem,” Dexter suddenly realized that he was holding in a tight bear hug. “I just missed you so much. You know you missed this amazing man just as much.” He smiled at me and pulled me closer to him again. I was bracing myself for another bone-crushing hug. Instead he crushed his lips against mine and I succumbed. I missed this part especially. He pulled back after a minute and led me inside, plopping me upon the couch. “So how does it feel to be a college graduate? Now that you proved your intelligence, you can run around with your diploma all over Lakeview. That would definitely be first on my list of priorities.” “Of course it would, since you wouldn’t have any job offers to get ready for.” He laughed and just looked at me. I hated it when he did that. I never know what he’s thinking. Then before I knew it, I was smiling too. God, let’s face it, I missed this crazy kid, and I don’t care who knows it. I slid off the couch, and sat in his lap. “So, what’s the deal with truth squad? Any new gigs?” Truth squad was Dexter’s band. “Ah, the band,” he sighed, “well that’s part of the reason I came down here. Ted was driving us crazy with all this blabbering about covers, and complaining about the potato song. If I didn’t leave, I was about to bet him that he couldn’t chug a gallon of milk, so he’d get sick and shut up.” This was the Dexter I so clearly remember. He was constantly betting everyone with idiotic challenges. Whether it was I Bet You A Quarter That The Next Commercial Is About Detergent or Twenty Bucks Says I Can Name More Names That Start With The Letter P While Ted Makes A Sandwich. Resolved Question: Cub Scout (Webelos) Leader Gift?

Our 10 year old son is about to receive his Arrow of Light award, and he was thinking that he wanted to get his leader a gift. I want the gift to be personal, unique, useful, and thoughtful. I don't want to do pictures (like a frame, scrapbook, etc.), or a standard desktop paperweight, or Webelos Coin.... We have one boy who is getting him a copy of an Army survival handbook, which is very neat. We can't get him a knife, camping item etc because he is very much into the outdoors, and has an abundance of supplies. I'm completely drawing a blank on this one, please help! You're supposed to go into your room in the monster world (through the hole) and read Joseph's memos. then you leave the room and you see a cut scene of Joe, and take the pic axe in the wall. But I already have the memo, so I can't continue on to beat the game, cuz I can't find it in my room since I already have it. So.. What do I do now? Uhh, what about the cheat? I know how to beat the game.... But I don't think anyone else was stupid enough to have that cheat on while they're playing the game. more

Resolved Question: Anyone have craft ideas for a 4 year old to do for his mom's birthday present?

My sister has a 4 year old and a 2 year old that I babysit and I want to do a project for her birthday that the 4 year old can do with me. I just am stumped on what to do. We did a scrapbook last year and she's got frames galore of the kids. She loves to entertain but has very simple minimalist taste ie her entertaining items are all white or lacking in color for the most part. I thought about letting him paint a glass platter then bake it on but I don't want it to be tacky. I want something useful that won't look like just another preschool art project. Any suggestions? So, my best friend lives in Japan and just graduated a couple days ago. Because she is my only real best friend, I really want to send her a graduation gift. However, I have been kind of troubled by what to get her. I kind of have my heart set on getting her a necklace or some form of jewelry (not earrings because she does not have her ears pierced), and have been looking around for just the right thing that is not overly expensive. Hi everyone. This question is for anyone who does scrapbooking. I may try to put something together for my (adult) children. I have lots of stuff: pictures, mementos of trips; concert tickets, etc. Anyway....I went to Michaels today and bought a 12 x 12 scrapbook. Here is my question: The pages are in plastic.....you can slide the white sheet out. I guess I was under the impression that scrapbook pages were NOT in plastic. Is this just a personal preference? If I was to use larger (and heavier) items in the scrapbook, such as a passport...wouldn't this be awkward to put back into the plastic sleeves. I apologize if I worded the question wrong. I'm pasting some cardstock/scrapbook paper to a candle tin as decoration. I am not making candles, but just using the tin for holding random items. Is there a clear substance or something to coat the paper on the tin with though so that it might resist water? Like a varnish? Preferably something that I can find in an arts and crafts store like Michael's? -I doubt lamination would work. -I'm considering Marine Varnish, but it seems rather heavy duty comparing to what I'm doing. -I have considered waterproof paper but in the end, I wanted to use the cardstock/scrapbook paper. -I appreciate the wax ideas, but I'm looking towards something less messier & oilier. -I can't delete a detail...but maybe Marine Varnish would be the best choice...would it be fine for something like what I'm working with though? more
