Open Question: Teachers, what is the normal range for writing in kindergarten?

I had my parent teacher conference with my son's teacher yesterday and it is still bugging me. He is 5 and a half (started kindergarten 2 days after turning 5) but the age range of the class is 5 and a half (my son a two girls have birthdays the same week) to 7 (three students are already 7). My son is smart and the teacher sees that (doing 3rd grade math and reading) but here is what really bugs me: My son and I sit at the table and are going over his writing samples. They have improved greatly (he went through a Mr. Sloppy stage because someone made fun of him for knowing more than him) and have gone from 1 sentence to 4 sentences when telling a story. He writes half pages at home but I understand why he doesn't do his best at school. Anyways, each of the samples has a picture that he drew which don't look bad either (looked like a 5 year old drew them). Her comments were as follows: assignment: (describe where you live) I live in a tall apartment. There are many windows and people. I live on the second floor. I love my room and toys. Her comments: That is good but next time add a sign in the picture or write the name of the apartment house. You told me about the building but not inside your apartment. Tell me more about your room or how many rooms there are. assignment: (describe what you like to do) I love star wars clone wars. I build star wars with my legos. I love my legos and have lots of them. Her comments: You didn't tell me what you like to build or where you build them. Tell me more next time. It went on and on like that with all of his writing samples (10 in all) and ranged from what I have here to telling him he has to not make up stories. Excuse me! It took me months to convince him that things can be whatever he wants them to be. It used to drive him nuts when I would draw a purple cow because cow's are not purple. Now he is very creative and uses that to build all sorts of things with his lego's and in his stories. She also said that not everyone in the class can write 4 sentences but that she knows he can so she only wants him to write 4 or more sentences from now on. Why the double standards?? Where is a student supposed to be at the end of kindergarten? more

When I was 3-5 I pulled my hair out. I also developed terrible self-consciousness and anxieties. When I was 6 to 8 years, I stole Star Wars and other specific toys from shops; I just had to have them. I even stole money from my parents to buy them. At this age, I also had improper sexual thoughts about the girls and teachers at school, about female domination, when I was far too young. I had obsessive compulsions; the compulsions went away in my teens but the obsessions are still there. Could this be a neurological problem, a hormone imbalance, Tourette's, or anything else specific?. I also had excessive sweating at 8, and a clutter (stutter) at 10Knowledgeable answers only! more

Me and my friend BJ both live out in the country and we both have house mice. My friend lives about 4 miles to the north while I live south from him. We both want to trap our house mice now and dress them up into blue and gray uniforms and line them up once a month in a field battle taking turns shooting at the other enemy mouse battle line until only blood and guts remains of one side or the other. I am thinking about putting some of my mice on toy horses and building a star fort complete with cannons. Me and BJ are currently designing a map of the the United States and making up advanced rules for this game. Once one side loses all of their territories or so many battles the loser will have to pay and random amount of cash prize to the winner.We are expecting to have one major battle a month involving about two dozen well dress field mice fighting for either side for probably over the course of the next year. I guess my question is do you think there could be a religious reason as a Christian why my friend BJ might not want to have a mouse civil war. more

Resolved Question: Why is he breaking all the toys?

My nephew is 5 going on 6. He is very smart and behaves well for my husband and I. At home its another story. anyways. We have noticed for a while that everytime he is here some thing or several things in my sons room gets broken. About a year ago he was ripping shelves off the wall and breaking new toys. Now he isnt running around acting like hes upset or anything, him and my son who is a little over a year younger are just playing in the room and when he leaves and we are cleaning up or if my son comes and tells we find the broken toy. Just for examples her are some of the stuff hes broke and how. Foam sword- scratched foam tearing pieces off. nerf ball- torn to shreds star wars gun- broke tip off books- ripped out pages and countless toys now missing legs wings and other parts. I dont know what it is but its usually new toys. Oh and one day i went in my sons room and he(my nephew) emptied the clothes hamper and both toy boxs and the whole book shelf to the floor. The room looked like a real disaster area everything everywhere. I dont know what to do ive talked to him put a lock on the closet door and when hes come over locked it but no matter what everytime he is over he breaks stuff. So i want to know some reasons why he might be doing this and what i can do to help.he plays xbox at home mainly i really didnt see very many toys in his room.and when i told him we would go to his house and break his toys if he didnt stop he said sure. but when i said we would break the xbox game he has he was like noo ill be good. Resolved Question: How to remove silly putty from toys?

I have a star wars tie fighter that I got from wall-mart, don't ask how but ive got silly putty stuck in it... Ive managed to get rid of the bulk of it but there's still a lot left in the space in front of the window at the front, sort of in front of and below the little space where the action figure sits,is there any way to get rid of this? Ive sunk it in hot water to make the putty softer and that helped me get out some more but not all of it. Is there anything that will melt/dissolve the putty without hurting the toy? more

No doubt the Air Force purchasing department gets some odd requests from time to time, but we'd love to have seen the grin on the face of the officer tasked with procuring some 1,700 Playstation 3s for a USAF facility in Rome, NY. Before you complain about your tax dollars being spent on toys, the machines aren't for gaming. Instead, the facility -- an Air Force research lab -- will join them into a parallel-computing cluster that, when complete, will number well over 2,000 PS3s. The supercomputer -- snappily monikered "500 TeraFLOPS Heterogeneous Cluster" -- will be put to work playing 2,000 simultaneous games of God of War III. Wait, no. Among other things, they'll be attempting to simulate the way the human brain processes information and how it pulls off the remarkably difficult task of recognizing the content of images. "Humans can routinely do these things, but a computer struggles to do it," the facility's computing director Mark Barnell told Stars and Stripes. "In a general sense, we are interested in making it autonomous." The cluster won't be as powerful as a regular supercomputing rig, but it will be cheaper and more environmentally friendly: it'll consume as much as 95% less electrical power and shut down unused machines when the cluster isn't running at full capacity. Resolved Question: Tips on my poems and short story, please. Thanks in advance!?

Well, I wrote these, and I want to know what other people think of them. One got published in Canada, but what do these say to you. I wasn't going for any particular theme here (other than the obvious one, protect the Earth!) and you could just read one or two or all if you like. Comment on anything you read. Thanks! (Also: These poems were part of a Four Part "Saga", if you'd like, I really don't know what else to call it, and Anthologies are normally longer. The short story was for a school project, but I quickly grew to love it more than I expected. Please read if you have a few minutes to kill. I'ts called The Cyclopes's Earrings. Poem One: Running Against Time It is going quick. Time is running out. The clock and its monotonous tick. Books are melting. Their words disappearing. Information isn’t helping. The lamps are dark. Lights are completely black. It’s disintegrating, humanity’s mark. Tapes are being destroyed. The light has killed them. Nature has been re-employed. The remaining ones will leave. They have fled the Earth. The shuttle the last thing they will see. But I was left here. I’m on my own. Loneliness I no longer fear. They called me crazy. I told you so. My memories of the past are hazy. Toys and games are gone. They couldn’t take them. This toy plays a child’s song. The song is about toys. “Toyland, Toyland, For magical girls and boys.” They’ll never have a magical place. Not like the Earth once was. The clean fresh air they won’t taste. What could we have done? To make the Earth less like this? The battle against nature we have won. What did we gain? This hard-fought war. Just earned us shame. It was God’s green Earth. Where there was a flood. And Jesus’ birth. It’s hard to picture that manger now. It’s covered in trash. How could we do this? How? It’s not green anymore. God loves us still. This planet is quite a bore. Only roaches now can dine. I knew this would happen. I knew it was a matter of time. Poem Two: Running From Them They follow me. Everywhere I go, they’re behind me. I know what they want. They want my secrets. They want to kill us. All of us. Mostly me. I told them the Earth was going to be bad. Did they listen? Of course not. Nobody ever listened to me. They thought I was crazy. They thought I was a crazy environmentalist. Yet they told each other that the environmentalists would clean it up. So they left me there. But I forgive them. Even if they try to kill me. They want to know where my friends are. Like I’m a gang and they’re the police. They want my secrets. I know that’s what they want. They’ll never get them. Not if I keep running. Poem Three: Running For My Life As I ran for my life I had only one thought What did I do to deserve this? This battle I had fought I stopped to take a break At a clearing with a pond A mysterious lady stood there It was the water she stood on. She glowed like a star Or a planet in the sky She was graceful and she read my mind. She knew I was going to die. She stood for what was an eternity She stared with eyes of fire I collapsed to the ground, in fear of her And the fact that I was tired She stepped onto land Then she suddenly froze Her white dress vanished and rearranged To what, I didn’t know The colors blended into a mess Of white armor and black shields A gun replaced the silver belt And the changing, it had yield Suddenly a helmet Above the woman’s clothes Formed into a cube And slowly it arose When it was placed on her head Webbing began to form Of white and black stained glass And a warrior was born She raised her hand As if to greet a stranger at her side But a gun replaced her hand And I had nowhere to hide She aimed the gun at me The sky behind her was dark blue And it darkened as she spoke the words: “I’d move if I were you.” I was lying on the ground I rolled off to the side And judging by the way she stiffened I thought I should abide. There was a loud booming sound And a laser went by fast I noticed it was flaming hot As it happened to fly past The sound had stopped Time seemed to go with it I turned to look, a man was there, My worries I forget He was who I was running from He was a soldier too, He had no name, just codes Something like FIGHTER 132. His face was white He fell to the ground He never moved again Never made another sound The woman walked over to him She grabbed him by his shirt She flung him to the sky He probably flew to Earth The woman’s dress reappeared She skipped to the water fast Then she just turned to stone After that, time slowly passed It left us floating in its wake And she slowly reappeared The layer of rock crumbled It was like looking into a mirror In her face I saw my own I thanked her for her deed She smiled and just replied “It’s not meOkay, so some of the poems got deleted, and the short story isn't there at all. Lego makes new colored bricks all the time to co-inside with their licensed sets. At one time purple, green and orange Lego's didn't even exist, and now not only do they exist but are plentiful. Lego has made colored faces and hands to match Patrick Star, Squidward Testicles, Sandy Cheeks and Mr. Krabs from the Spongebob sets. Tons of variations were created for the Star Wars sets, and the latest sets of Toy Story have shorter and taller variations of Lego people, as well as yet another new color. At Downtown Disney in Orlando, Fl The Lego store has a wall of Lego people from the past 20 years or so. I didn't see any race but the "yellow" Caucasian people, so I was wondering if Lego has made other races of their people, and if not...why not? more

Resolved Question: My five year old seems really attracted to guns?

He always plays guns. He likes transformers, star wars, spider man, cars, trucks, average little boy stuff. I don't mind him playing or watching for ex. Starwars since it teaches about doing and being good, and using there powers to be good. Most little boys his age watch it. He has a light saber and it's much better than a gun. He rather take his tinker toys and construct big guns. He outfits his entire waste line with knives he has also made from tinker toys, if not tinker toys than sticks on the ground. I don't want to shelter h, and I believe that boys should be allowed to play war. Every culture on this plant from the beginning to now have little boys who play war, but I'm wondering if he's playing too much, and how to steer him away from so much violence, or even how to divert or channel that into something more positive. more

He just went into his room and came out draped in all his toy guns, cowboy holsters and walkie-talkie set. (Is marching around the livingroom) He said his communication system is working. LMAO. Whatever he sees on tv (Star Wars or Indiana Jones, etc.) he comes out of his room dressed like it and ready to role play.
